Ela Minus

Acts Of Rebellion

Performed, produced and recorded entirely by herself, acts of rebellion is a complex manifesto on simplicity, a call to fight, to live, to be present. It’s a collection about the personal as political and embracing the beauty of tiny acts of revolution in our everyday lives. This ethos is clear in the dreamy, pulsing new single/video, “el cielo no es de nadie,” “an ode to little, constant, every day acts of love” sung in Ela’s native Spanish.

Following “they told us it was hard, but they were wrong” and “megapunk,” “el cielo no es de nadie” defies the idea that one grandiose act means more than little ones. The video, co-directed by Ela and Pepi Ginsberg, presents striking images of Ela’s machines and her moving throughout the stage and hallways of a club. It gives a feel of Ela’s visceral, intimate world and urges finding a deeper connection to those around you. “‘el cielo no es de nadie’ is about all the love I see in small, everyday acts. It’s an invitation to appreciate unheroic, but constant and meaningful actions,” says Ela. “The song’s title, ‘el cielo no es de nadie,’ refers to the phrase ‘I’ll give you the sky,’ a common expression used in Spanish when in love. In the song, I defy it: 'you can't give me the sky' / it isn’t yours to give.”

Before forging her path as a solo electronic artist, Ela was a drummer in a teenage hardcore band. She joined the band when she was just 12, performing with them for almost a decade. Ela then moved to the United States to attend Berklee College of Music, where she double-majored in jazz drumming and synthesizer design. This roving background instilled in her a belief that we all have the power to change things, and as she delved deeper into her work with synthesizers, she saw a clear connection between the freedom of the DIY scene she grew up in and club culture. “I deeply identify with club culture, and want to make music to dance to,” she says. “I also want to make songs in the more traditional sense, with melodies, lyrics, and singing. I want to make songs that stay with people through the years.”

Using only hardware to perform, write and record, Ela creates complex, technical electronic music that exudes a warm vibrancy, along with a darker, almost celebratory understanding that our breaths aren’t infinite. Her sharp, coiled words are cathartic—due in part to her approach to writing them. “I always start writing by improvising alone,” she says. “Once I have some instrumentals I’m happy with, I intuitively grab the mic and sing a phrase with a melody in it. I always keep that initial phrase.” On acts of rebellion, you sense the stories hidden in everyday things. You feel Ela’s personality and viewpoint; you sense her presence. The cover features a photo of her, most of her face obscured, but her eyes sharply focused.

On acts of rebellion, she’s asking us to make contact not just with her, but also the people that inhabit our lives. She’s suggesting we leave our gadgets behind in favor of flesh-and-blood communities. She’s asking us to think, dance, and love, while she coaxes humanity from her hardware—machines that rattle and whirr alongside her and, in turn, make us feel more alive.

    Mira Calix

    Eyes Set Against The Sun

Mira Calix, former record shop manager, DJ and boundary-blurring songwriter presents her third album. It's beautiful and delicate, hypnotic and uplifting - It's out-there, but it's in-here too. "Eyes Set Against The Sun" features a melee of sound including strings, piano, a glockenspiel, buzzing beats, ghostly voices and a children's choir multilayered with field recordings of birds, leaves, water and snow melting. There's even the sound of an old bamboo xylophone slowly crumbling apart. Such aural enjoyment invites the listener to conjure up personal visions of the landscapes and colour that inspired this magical album. Just as the pauses between and during the songs are elegantly arranged, like oxygen allowing the music to breath and come alive, so too are the three spaces, like three silent beats, used in the title of the record, "Eyes Set Against The Sun".

      Mirry

      Mirry

Mirry is one of those rare projects where the story seems so absolutely magical, that it’s almost impossible to imagine such beauty being lost in the shadows for so long.

30 years ago, Edinburgh based musician Tom Fraser was helping with the house clearance after his grandfather’s death and found an old scratched Transco record left out on the street. He took it home where it sat on a shelf for years until one day during lockdown, he gave it a play - and a whole world opened up to him - his Great Aunt Mirry had recorded a number of piano compositions which she had kept secret from her family. Since then, Tom has been re-working and re-mixing her compositions with his brother-in- law Simon Tong (The Verve, The Good the Bad and the Queen, and The Magnetic North) and together with project curator Kirsteen McNish they hope that this secret life will now reach beyond Mirry’s own four walls.

Mirabel Lomer was born in 1906 to a military family and for the best part of her life stayed at home in Ireland looking after her elderly parents. In the early 1950s she became a paid companion to another elderly couple in Wiltshire, both of whom she nursed until they died. While most of her life was spent caring for others it also transpired that Mirry had written music (despite the fact that as a young woman, her father actively discouraged her playing music in the family home). In quiet rebellion and creative escape, she composed this piano music secretly and her nephew and confidant Geoffrey captured it on his tape recorder.

Like untold numbers of women whose creative lives didnt find an outlet, Mirry never received any accolades for her work but enjoyed the act of creating work for herself. She died in the 1980s but the story of Mirry’s music and secret life is still unfolding.

The resulting album “Mirry” by Fraser and Tong is a celebration of Mirry’s work and a call and response to her original recordings with her family members – almost as if she were still in a room with them.

Since then Tong has retrieved whatever else he could find in the family attic. Hundreds of Stereoscopic slides, super-8 films, photography, stories, poetry and further recordings were found, all recorded by her nephew, (now in his nineties) who believes Mirry would be delighted that her work would be heard many years down the line.

Tong said “This project hopes to shine a light on carers, and how ones creative work can live on and continue to reverberate and evolve long after it’s original conception”

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: I was (am) a big fan of The Books, and Mirry certainly shares elements of that kind of patchworked loop business, but what really sets this apart is the gorgeous depth of the brittle piano and organic echoes of the ambient instrumentation surrounding it. Really transportive and intoxicating suite of hazy ambience and almost veers into ragtime piano in parts too.

Following her signing to One Little Independent Records, London-based multidisciplinary artist and producer Laura Misch announces the release of her long-awaited debut album, ‘Sample The Sky’.

An enchanting journey through London’s wild edgelands, the LP is an ode care, connection and listening to the natural world.

‘Sample The Sky’ responds to nature’s patterns through organic electronic productions, embodied lyrics, wind inspired saxophone, singing and synthesis all woven into intricately crafted leftfield pop songs.

          Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes

          What Kinda Music

“What Kinda Music” is an astonishing collaboration between two artists of very different disciplines, and one of the most unique and seamlessly original projects of its ilk to date. Moving fluidly through sleek electronica, avant-garde jazz, vintage hip hop and so much more, Misch and Dayes take you on a journey that is by turns surprising and spontaneous, heady and head spinning, and nothing less than compelling – a singular vision which fuses the DNA of both musicians with spectacular results, as can be seen in the title track, which comes backed by a gorgeously atmospheric video by XX.

Even though the fundamental bones of this project came together very quickly, its actual provenance stretches back much, much farther back, with the pair not only growing up in the same area of South East London, but Misch actually seeing Dayes play on drums in the school talent show for the first time when he was roughly 8 or 9. They both kept tabs on each other – Misch becoming a fan of Dayes’ act YussefKamaal, Dayes clocking his videos in 2014 – but it was only when they met at a launch party for Misch’s debut LP “Geography” in 2018 that the proverbial creative sparks began to fly. “As a musician you’re always looking for contemporaries who can push you and challenge you and make you better”, says Dayes. “I instantly felt that with Tom – he was such a gifted musician, and so prolific”. That summer they decided to go into the studio together, jam a little, and see what happens, with no other expectation placed upon it.

As it turns out, the music came fast and furiously. Two initial tracks were suddenly followed by a handful of others, and the pair found themselves contemplating what to do next. “Pretty soon, we knew that something was gelling”, Dayes says. “It didn’t feel like a one-off collaboration, it felt like a body of work”. What made the pair click, according to Misch and Dayes, were the exact same factors that meant it shouldn’t, by all rights, work. Misch says, “Yussef comes from a more experimental background, and he has a lot of loose, crazy ideas. I know how to write a catchy melody, but with interesting chords and have a good understanding of popular song forms, so I think I streamlined those ideas and made them accessible”. And certainly, in “What Kinda Music” you can sense the DNA of both musicians, but fusing so effortlessly and beautifully that it creates something else entirely, the appropriately named “Lift Off” sending goosebumps with its jazz flecked crescendo, and “Night Rider” hynotising with its deeply mesmeric grooves. “I have a love for harmony and chords”, Misch adds. “Working with someone like Yussef, who has such a gifted sense of rhythm allowed a perfect balance”.

Throughout the record, there is an utterly joyful feel of two musicians at the top of their game sparking off one another, picking up ideas and running with them – zigging where the other zags, ebbing where the other flows, with Misch producing the majority of the record and both having a hand in the overall sound and feel of the record.

“Working with Yussef has actually changed the way I work as a musician”, Misch muses. “He’s pushed me and unlocked a more experimental part of me that I hadn’t really allowed myself to explore before. I think we really did impact each other in a fundamental way”. Dayes is similarly effusive in his praise for Misch. “A musician like him, who’s at the top of his game, he doesn’t need to do this”, he raves. “He can just keep doing the same thing and why not? He’s killing it. The fact that he’s so humble, that he’s so curious about everything and open to collaboration, speaks a lot to him as an artist, because it’s not easy finding musicians who want to collaborate. Something always gets in the way, whether it’s ego or their team or whatever. But with Tom it felt like the intention was purely creative, and that’s what made it exciting”. In fact, Dayes says that the intentions of the record go even deeper than just music. “Both our parents who’d never met each other before, are now best friends as a result of this, they now see each other more than we do! I’d like to think, in some small way, that this album has a similar impact for people too – everything feels so divided these days, it would be nice for people to hear the record and hear two very different musicians coming together and realise it doesn’t have to be that way”.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Martin says: The fertility stemming from the collaborative nature of the South London jazz scene is beautifully illustrated by ‘What Kinda Music’, Yussef Dayes' deeper and darker rhythms acting as perfect counterpoint to Tom Misch's clean, exquisitely rendered pop leanings.

Pieces well and truly picked up by a who's who of collectors and selectors, the TD team follow Bobby Snacks' super smash with some seriously synthy slices from good buddies Miserymix. A collaboration born behind the Piccadilly Records' counter, Miserymix is the dark disco alias of Goth Spice (Kohl AF, dressed in black and armed with nonpliments) and Mushy P (a toothy and goofy Talking Drummer). Based a mere 192 away from Senor Snacks in the thriving metropolis of Levenshulme, this pair of disco delinquents share a penchant for pingers, Prosecco and the lesser known corners of Europe's 80's club sound. After a mysterious appearance on one of Duca Bianco's brilliant V/As, Miserymix drop their debut EP on Drum Chums, aiming directly for the dance floor.

The Italo-noir of 'Sexy Cowboys' gets the set off to a sleazy start, its seductive synths and strangled guitars riding throbbing bass and leather-clad percussion right into the darkroom, where the yelping vocal echoes over the creak of a swing. Miserymix push the tempo for the pacey disco pump of 'Proverbial S.O.B.', a peak-time stomper dubbed senseless for the perfect tops-off groove. Subtle kalimba, cut up vocals and orchestral hits find every sweet spot atop the one note bassline, while those airy piano chords steer us straight into the sublime.

Kicking off the flip is the uber-anthemic, endorphin-laced and mid-paced dancefloor destroyer 'E Motion'. Our disco duo spend plenty of time on the foreplay, teasing every ounce of ecstasy out of the nuanced perx, rolling bassline and sparkling synths before unleashing some flawless Francophone vocals on the way to a colossal chorus. Smouldering like a Propaganda club mix, this Europop obscurity has been upgraded into an accidental pill tune of perma-gurn proportions - this one is a road-tested dance floor sure shot.

Indulging the afterglow, Miserymix sign off with the superb synth pop of 'Name Game'. Stomping drum machines play host to an insistent bassline and some slinky keys, while the cucumber cool Euro vocal serves cabaret camp and maximum vamp.

Remember folks, the TD crew (drum)rolls deep... 100% Drum Fun Guaranteed!

Follow the Cyborg, the debut album from Korean-American musician and Mute’s newest signing Miss Grit, moves towards deeper electronic sound and is a sonic leap forward for the artist, occupying a world of chaotic electronic experimentation and stirring electric guitars.

Following the release of acclaimed EPs Talk, Talk and Impostor, Follow the Cyborg sees Miss Grit aka Margaret Sohn pursue the path of a non-human machine, as it moves from its helpless origin to awareness and liberation. This album was fully produced by Sohn in their home studio and features guest collaborators Stella Mozgawa of Warpaint, Aron Kobayashi Ritch of Momma, and close friend and fellow songwriter Pearla.

              Miss Red

              Dagga / One Shot Killer

PRESSURE presents the limited edition red vinyl of Miss Red 'Dagga / One Shot Killer', produced by Kevin Martin aka The Bug, limited to 500 copies worldwide and hand stamped with her K.O. logo.
Miss Red’s fierce flow rides roughshod over warped bashment anthems and showcases her ability to adapt to different flavours. The Bug’s riddims are a masterclass in restraint, retaining his trademark heaviness but taking a step back from the atmospheric ambience of his recent work with Burial and Earth. Instead this is an example of the dexterity with which Martin can deploy a minimal arrangement, taking a bassline, beat, FX and vocal
and sharpening those elements for maximum dancefloor devastation.
In 2015 Miss Red dropped her first solo mixtape, Murder, with The Bug’s riddims supplemented with contributions from other producers such as Mark Pritchard, Mumdance and Andy Stott. Subsequent singles on her own Red label and the in-house imprint of iconic London record shop Sounds Of The Universe have sold out straight away, and she has received acclaim for her collaborations with Warp Records artist Gaika.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Ahead of her "K.O." double LP Miss Red drops the boisterous bashment thump of "Dagga" (essential for heating up the dance, backed with "One Shot Killer" a deeper darker track with trademark sonics from The Bug.

                Mission To The Sun

                Sophia Oscillations

Duo from Detroit which includes Chris Samuels of Ritual Howls.

Mission to the Sun's sophomore album, Sophia Oscillations, is an immersive journey through the dark corners of post industrial music. The Detroit based duo continues the sonic exploration started on their debut album Cleansed by Fire, while delving deeper into themes of isolation and lost communication. Christopher Samuels’ synths, samples and rhythmic programming is accented by Kirill Slavin’s haunting vocal delivery as the listener receives intersperse audio recordings from the outer reaches of inner space.

Throughout the album, Mission to the Sun masterfully weaves together disparate sounds, creating a cohesive whole that is both complex and emotionally charged. In the opening track “Drowning,” Slavin sings about being consumed by the waters of the subconscious on an alien planet as he looks for omens in the sky. Samuels drives the song with a thick bass line and a repeating ambient pad chord structure that achieves a rich, yet alienated mood. The title track “Sophia Oscillations” establishes the album’s theme of distance and isolation while pulsating through a range of emotions. Samuels meshes otherworldly sound design with brooding synth lines to create a dark and introspective atmosphere. "Unborn" continues the journey while Slavin sings about the exploration of death and surveillance, highlighting the digital footprint that never goes away. The song's rhythmic quality (despite not having a drum beat) further highlights the duo’s willingness to delve into the darker aspects of the human condition.

With "Sophia Oscillations", Mission to the Sun offers a deeply concerning and otherworldly listening experience that showcases the band's skill at crafting intricate sonic landscapes. The band masterfully blends organic vocal delivery and synthetic sounds to create songs as if they were bathed in alien noise artifacts. These compositions oscillate as transmissions from a journey towards a distant sun to be interpreted by the listener in their home world.

                  The Mistys

                  Detached Engagement

"The collection of songs that make up ‘Detached Engagement’ are our most personal and emotionally revealing tracks. Recorded over a period of emotional turbulence where we lost loved ones and uncertainty seemed the only constant. Our studio became a hide away, a place of refuge where we could direct our energies into a creative act of understanding and hope. We reconfigured our subversive pop to fit our present situation, the distortion was dialled back, the gauzy tape worn ambiguity was replaced by a more in focus directness. Every song was stripped back to its essential elements revealing a newfound complexity in our song writing and arrangement.

Our devotion to the power of pop has not diminished, we still hold firm that it is a subversive medium to communicate ideas outside of the conventional messages of love and other frivolities. It still has the power to bring people together around a shared vision of how things could be.

We are happy to present these ten missives of post-industrial romance, existential melancholy, new beginnings, songs that linger in the half-light of ‘80’s synth-pop, 90’s trip-hop and electronica. It’s not all that heavy, this one is for the slow dancers and the close dancers."

                    MKWAJU Ensemble (Midori Takada)

                    MKWAJU

WRWTFWW Records is proud to announce the highly anticipated official reissue of holy grail album MKWAJU by acclaimed Japanese percussionist Midori Takada's MKWAJU ensemble, sourced from the original masters and available in two versions: a vinyl LP cut at Emil Berliner Studios (formerly the  in-house recording department of Deutsche Grammophon) and a digipack CD.

Originally recorded in February and March 1981 and released by fabled Japanese avant-garde label Better Days (home of Ryuichi Sakamato's debut album, Yasuaki Shimizu's Kakashi, Colored  Music self-titled LP and many more) MKWAJU is the fruit of the collaboration between Takada's crew and world-famous composer/musical director Joe Hisaishi, the man behind most of of Hayao Miyazaki's Studio Ghibli anime soundtracks and over 100 other films scores, including Takeshi Kitano's Sonatine, Hana-Bi, and Kikujiro. The ensemble's transcendental wonder is, in fact, the first-ever Midori Takada album and the first-ever Joe Hisaishi-produced album. Historic.

Led by Midori Takada on marimba, gong, vibraphone, and tom tom, MKWAJU is an inventive and riveting take on Eastern and Western minimalist traditions, African rhythms, and early electronica. Drawing from its jazz-rooted polyrhythmic improvisations in the most inventive ways, the album covers a wide spectrum of sounds, from colorful dance floor-ready percussion pieces that stand somewhere between proto-techno and experimental synth-pop, to cinematic ambient landscapes and ethereal drone delicacies. The feverishly sought-after full-length is a stepping-stone in Midori Takada's career and an all-around pioneering album.

Alongside Takada and Hisaishi (who not only produced the album but also played synthesizers), personnel on MKWAJU includes famed Japanese musicians Yoji Sadanari and Hideki Matsutake of KI-Motion fame, Junko Arase (heard on Satoshi Ashikawa's legendary Still Way - Wave Notation 2), and Pecker (whose stacked resume boasts collaborations with Ryuichi Sakamoto and Jun Fukamachi).

WRWTFWW Records follow their universally acclaimed release of "Through The Looking Glass" with the official reissue of legendary album "KI-Motion" by Japanese percussionist Midori Takada’s MKWAJU ensemble, sourced from the original masters and available in two versions: a vinyl LP cut at Emil Berliner Studios and housed in 350g old Stoughton tip-on sleeve, and a digipak CD.
A highly creative and transcendental fusion of marimba, vibraphone, bamboo percussion and synthesizers, KI-Motion was recorded in 1981 and captures the birth of Midori Takada’s exploration of minimalism, African rhythmic tradition, and ambient music.
The album takes its conceptual inspiration from the tamarind ( 'mkwaju' in Swahili), a drought resistant tree notably used to craft some of the first mallets and marimbas but also known for its culinary and medical uses, an essential symbol of life and identity for the Central African grasslands. Drawing from the region’s culture and music as well as the crucial notion that rhythms represent the very fabric of life, Midori Takada leads her ensemble into environmental heaven to create one of the highlights of her recording career and an absolute must-have from the golden age of Japanese ambient…the ideal companion to her majestic "Through The Looking Glass" opus!

Patrick says: WRWTFWW revisit magnificent Midori Takada for this reissue of the 1981 LP from her MKWAJU ensemble. (Slightly) Less esoteric than her better known "Through The Looking Glass", "KI-Motion" hits us with weird-wave dancers, ambient dreamers and lysergic lullabies, all inspired by the tamarind. Tasty fusion tackle from my favourite Japanese percussionist.

Legendary New York band M'lumbo distil experiences from their pre-pandemic shamanic travels into their stunning new album The Summer Of Endless Levitation. The eight-track vinyl LP is an avant-garde take on folk music informed by painter and sculptor Jean Hans Arp's 'Biomorphic' works and it serves as a sonic renewal of self.

The cult M'lumbo collective has been a legendary and groundbreaking act since first forming in the mid-80s. They cross genre boundaries as they draw on jazz, world, electronic, rock and experimental music that escapes the commercial world and take you into another realm entirely. There is no limit to their sound; each member brings their own cultural background to the mix, making the band all the more unique.

As the coronavirus pandemic struck, three members of the band Rob Ray Flatow, Paul-Alexandre Meurens and Brian O'Neill under-took a regimen of shamanic traveling in New York City. The experiences led them to spontaneously compose and perform a suite of pieces, informed and inspired by Jean Hans Arp's works but also by the feelings of isolation and indefinite exile yet to come in their urban environment.

Compared to the works they have done as part of the larger M'lumbo band, this album is a more modest and naive affair that is "a vehicle for the renewal of feeling using only a few instruments - acoustic and electric guitar, keyboard, flute, small percussion, kalimba and clarinet - and locating a sense of both the deep sadness and uplifting powers of reverie."

'There Are No Words' kicks off with heavenly chords and organic percussion that recalls the jungle jazz of Don Cherry, then 'Shoreline' is a five-minute dub with percolating rhythms and new age melodies before the soul-soothing acoustic guitar of 'The Afternoon Levitation' blisses you out on a sunny day. The perfectly entitled 'Swoon' is another gloriously uplifting piece of musical spirituality that fuses the electronic and synthetic with the ancient and ritualistic. There is more jungle jazz, big-band horn work and cosmic synth modulations of 'Open The Heavens' while 'Quanta' is a shuffling, jumbled mix of radiant chords, wigged-out electronic lines and celestial charm. 'Planetfall' goes from free-form jazz to double-time techno and back to cathartic ambient. The final trio of tracks conjures up everything from the transcendental jazz of Alice Coltrane to the cinematic downtempo of Calm.

After the collaboration with DJ Durbin on 'Can't You Tell' Manu is back as MNL to release his first solo EP. He mangles the sounds and rhythms of his surroundings without limits and builds his own bittersweet world from them – full of glitched and saturated fractals and sonic holographs.

Hodge's remix turns the track 'I Don't Know What I Want' into a hi-tek UKG-esque dancefloor killer which’ll please fans of Four Tet, Overmono, Floating Points etc.

Moby’s second album on Deutsche Grammophon following 2021’s Bestselling Album & Chart Success “Reprise”.

Digging further into his catalogue, Moby has reimagined fifteen of some of his most iconic tracks for his new album “Resound NYC”, featuring tracks that he wrote between 1994-2010 while living in New York City, and the new versions feature a vibrant, brass-heavy sound. From the sublime desperation of “When It’s Cold I’d Like to Die” to the manic stomp of “Extreme Ways” (best known as the theme from the “Jason Bourne” film franchise), the reworked tracks burst forth with boundless energy. Guest vocalists on “Resound NYC” include Nicole Scherzinger, Gregory Porter, Ricky Wilson (Kaiser Chiefs), Mylene Farmer, Amythyst Kiah, Lady Blackbird, Dougy Mandagi (The Temper Trap) and more.

Juan Atkin's masterpiece compilation, the blueprint of techno albums.... the 1993 Model 500 "Classics" compilation with some of Juan Atkins' biggest early Metroplex milestones, with some of them in exclusive remixed versions. 3 decades later Metroplex is re-releasing this collection of hugely influential tracks for a new generation to play from fresh and clean vinyl!. Just like the recent 12" reissue series, this album has been fully remastered with all the care and attention to detail you can imagine. Tracks like "No UFOs", "The Chase", "Techno Music", "Night Drive (Time, Space, Transmat)" or "Off To Battle" are basically techno ground zero, with the electro influence of mid-80s to late-80s Juan Atkins productions still omnipresent. 30 years on since its original release on R&S records, "Classics" is still as gritty and timeless a statement as ever. Pure sonic futurism!

New Metroplex! Featuring Basic Channel demigod Moritz Von Oswald on remix duties.

"Starlight" is an adequate title for this swung piece of Detroit minimalism / futurism. Using slowly evolving synth parameters, a reverb-laden hi-hat rhythm and supporting bass weight, the track rocks on a dub-echoed pendulum; cavernous, pitch black, and gazing into the endless wonder of the galaxy.

Grounding the track into more submerged terra firma, Moritz accentuates the swung rhythms, minimizing the space and making the track hit more directly - especially around the low mids. It's an expert refix which retains all the qualities of the original whilst giving it a whole new sonic environment.

Specialist tackle from two stalwarts of the game - these are gonna fly out so buy now or cry later!

                            Moderat

                            More D4ta

For bands, a “hiatus” is usually just a polite way of announcing a break-up, but sometimes, a hiatus is just that—a hiatus. Back in 2017, when Moderat announced that they’d be taking an extended break following a final concert in their hometown of Berlin, many assumed that the group was basically calling it quits. After all, they’d already completed a celebrated trilogy of albums, repeatedly broken into the pop charts and performed all around the globe (including MainStage sets at some of the world’s biggest festivals including Coachella, Roskilde, Rock Werchter, Glastonbury, Primavera, Sónar and many many more)—what else was left for the German trio to accomplish? Moderat, however, always knew that they’d find their way back to one another.

                              10 TRACKS
MORE D4TA, the group’s fourth album, arrives more than six years after its predecessor (2016’s III), yet its contents are quintessentially Moderat. Although the trio’s hiatus was absolutely real—exhausted after years of touring, Apparat (a.k.a. Sascha Ring) and Modeselektor (a.k.a. Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary) spent two years away from one another, focusing instead on their own respective projects—once they decided to resume working together, the music (eventually) started flowing again.

                              46 MINUTES, 33 SECONDS
It wasn’t an easy process. It’s never been easy for Moderat, an outfit who tellingly titled their debut EP Auf Kosten Der Gesundheit (translation: At the Cost of Health) and then needed seven years to put together a follow-up. Back in those days, the group’s members were essentially remixing each other, but over time, they’ve gradually developed into a proper band, writing together and developing a workflow that’s totally distinct from their other projects. (In a band where all three members are artists, producers and mixing engineers, striking that sort of creative balance is trickier than it might seem.)

                              494 WORDS
Created largely during a time when touring (and most traveling) was off the table, MORE D4TA is an album that wrestles with feelings of isolation and information overload—issues that have become particularly pronounced over the past two years. Many of its lyrics are rooted in Ring’s frequent trips to Berlin’s Gemäldegalerie museum (often with his infant daughter in tow), where he’d seek refuge in the great paintings of the past while worrying about the future.

                              490,6 MB
MORE D4TA is rooted in that same collaborative spirit, but long before any of its tracks were laid down, Moderat spent months hanging out and getting musically reacquainted, indulging in extended bouts of experimentation and slowly fleshing out ideas as they dove into modular composition, field recordings and other sonic oddities. That said, MORE D4TA is very much a Moderat album. No matter how far the band ventures into music’s outer realms, they always wind up back in their own unique soundworld, a place where emotive pop and fluttering electronic soundscapes walk hand in hand. What they make isn’t necessarily dance music, but it is something that shines brightest in the dark of night, the group’s rich melodies and Ring’s ethereal vocals emitting a warm, almost bioluminescent glow.

                              MORE D4TA
Although the LP’s title is an anagram for “Moderat 4,” there’s more to it than cheeky wordplay. In a time where everyone is constantly bombarded with content, and taking part in the cultural conversation requires engaging with digital platforms more interested in harvesting data than celebrating art, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and disillusioned. MORE D4TA acknowledges that reality, but it also refuses to be cowed by it. Moderat’s new album is ultimately just another addition to the content pile—there’s no escaping that—but the trio still yearns to create and connect. They’re not a conceptual outfit, and never have been: After spending the better part of two decades making music together, they’ve carved out a sound and aesthetic that are all their own, and MORE D4TA showcases a group that’s creatively recharged and fully dedicated to its craft. Maybe bands should take hiatuses—real ones— a little more often.

Barry says: As expected, this collaboration of these two musical masterminds sees a perfect juxtaposition of laid-back mellow electronica and more dancefloor orientated heft, and is probably the most refined of their musical visions thus far. Both brilliantly produced and endlessly deep, it's a wonderful journey.

Modern Analysis is a vintage analog duo comprised of duKe and AFQ and they seem to be treadin the same steps as Jamal Moss, Hieroglyphic Being, Dirty Blends stalwarts The Jak, The Falcon, Grizzly Knuckles, Cliff Solomon etc; modern day, tribal jakbeat wizards that revisit the golden age of Trax and Chicago house music with a stripped back aesthetic that revels in mood and feeling.

Tracks recorded live, with everything played by hand, giving a unique swing and flavour to these primordial house lifeforms. The spirit of Ron Hardy and Adonis is strong in this one young Jedi!

Proper buzzing to see a resurgence in this sound, that's largely been forgotten yet remains the TRUE and ORIGINAL HOUSE SOUND!!!

                              EXTLP

EXTLP is very much rooted in bombastic rave sounds, but there’s much more to this romp than barreling techno and neck-snapping breakbeats. Across its 15 tracks, Modeselektor tear through mutant crunk distortions, glitchy dub meditations, neon synth-pop and more. EXTLP features a star-studded slate of guests from around the globe, including veteran dub vocalist Paul St. Hilaire, sharptongued UK rapper Flohio, avant-pop rulebreaker Catnapp and legendary Einstürzende Neubauten frontman Blixa Bargeld.

Arriving on the heels of Extended mixtape — and the three EPs that immediately followed it — EXTLP is the final piece of what might be the most prolific period of Modeselektor’s entire career.

                                  Modeselektion Vol. 04

“Modeselektion Vol.04” brings together an utterly enthralling and 100% exclusive collection of 17 free-thinking and boundary-pushing tracks from exciting upstarts such as rRoxymore, Skee Mask and Sarah Farina to exalted visionaries Peder Mannerfelt, Vatican Shadow and Modeselektor themselves who present their first new track since 2015. It’s a direct reflection of Modeselektor’s genre-defying DJ sets week in, week out around the world which, at its heart, celebrates invention, innovation and hybridity combined with a hearty commitment to moving dancefloors. Indeed, this has been the ethos from the inaugural release in the Modeselektion series in 2010.

“The choice of tracks is influenced by our thirst for effective dance music. After almost four years of touring with Moderat, we really felt the urge to dedicate ourselves again to what made us.”

                                    Monkeytown - 2022 Repress

Welcome to Monkeytown. Berlin duo Modeselektor returns full force with a new album whose immense energy and club-boiling beats will inject the global dance community with inspiration that reverberates across the entire musical spectrum.

Flowing freely between styles and tempos, Monkeytown experiments with the edges and extremes, exploring fresh sonic territory from a solid base of beats located deep within the groove. With massive drums, minced vocals and a mastery of mounting tension, Modeselektor creates a new animal out of dance music, a mutating chimera with body parts of left-field hip hop, soulful R&B, punk rap and playful surprises. Contributing to the album is an exciting palette of guest vocalists and musicians, including Thom Yorke, Busdriver, PVT, Anti Pop Consortium, Miss Platnum, Sascha Ring (aka Apparat), Pillow Talk, Gordon Boerger, Siriusmo and Otto von Schirach.

Monkeytown immediately sets the stage on a higher level with intro track “Blue Clouds,” which loosens limbs from the start with a deep and sparkling hook. “Pretentious Friends” is a full-throttle experience whose beats bump like elephants between Busdriver’s scratched-up, screwed-down vocals. Thom Yorke collaborates on two tracks, contributing his production finesse and haunting falsetto to the dark tension of “Shipwreck” and to the psychedelic caverns of “This,” where pixelated vocals echo from the shadows with ominous overtones.

Trashy dance floor rocker “Evil Twin” is drenched in metal and concrete, like the demented industrial offspring “Kill Bill Vol. 4” and “The Black Book.” Modeselektor pulls out hidden drawers of bass in the funky “German Clap,” a steaming monster that grabs with gasping urgency. Miss Platnum rides low and slow into “Berlin,” smoothly spreading vocals over the chunk-ridden rhythm, a luscious R&B offering to lap up like cream. The album breaks open entirely and monkeys run wild in “Grillwalker,” a slamming club behemoth fashioned from mutilated 8-bits and a delirious bassline. PVT shines on “Green Light Go,” a poignant, off-kilter track that shuffles forward between loose drums before lifting off into the ether.

Beneath Monkeytown’s exquisite orchestration and eclectic sound, pure energy is at the core of the release, vibrating with an emotional vivacity that dares to escape its sonic cage and fling itself upon the world. Joining the heavy ranks of Hello Mom! and Happy Birthday!, Monkeytown will light up the club and the cerebrum with Modeselektor’s incredible abilities to move the body, melt the mind and gather disparate genres and their listeners together in one monkey-filled, musical metropolis.

                                      Modula

Paranormal Phenomena - The Icelandic Expedition

Sci-Fi leaning library music on this new album from Modula (Firecracker, Periodica) on Tartlet. Tapping into the seductive unease of the unexplained, "Paranormal Phenomena - The Icelandic Expedition" is a nine-track album that evokes alien synth-electro and New Age soundscapes.

During a trip to Iceland in February 2020, Naples native Filippo Colonna Romano (Modula) experienced the raw power of the island’s otherworldly natural forces. Inspired by his field recordings and a rekindled interest in sci-fi, the album's idea was born. Steeped in haunting LA synthesis and cinematic tension, the album is an imagined soundtrack to a supernatural thriller, cast in the icy tones of the Roland JD-800.

'When I went to Iceland I was so excited about the ambience and sounds,' says Modula. 'I felt everything was stronger than normal; the wind was brutal, the waves fast and noisy. I came to the conclusion that what I had captured all sounded strangely eerie and otherworldly. I decided to compose music that had the same vibe as the field recordings - cold and strange, mysterious and alien.'

The album includes nine tracks each representing a scene in the imaginary movie, inviting the listener on a journey through cold landscapes and into dark caves where unknown creatures lurk in the shadows. "Paranormal Phenomena" leads logically on from Modula’s previous work for Bordello A Parigi and Firecracker, not to mention his "Alba - Tempesta - Notturno EP" on Tartelet Records which drew on field recordings from the jungles of South America. Merging extreme environments with a rich palette of classic outboard gear, Modula’s music transports listeners through space and time. Given the heavy motion-picture theme present in "Paranormal Phenomena", the album is a fitting release to inaugurate Tartelet Archives, a new sub-label to Tartelet Records focusing on electronic obscurities and sounds from the past.

                                      Kollektion 07 : Solo Works

Dieter Moebius is one of the most important protagonists of avant-garde electronic music in Germany. Alongside his bands Kluster/Cluster and Harmonia, he participated in numerous collaborations (with the likes of Brian Eno and Mani Neumeier/Guru Guru). Asmus Tietchens, one of his musical companions, compiled this collection for Bureau B – he concentrated on his solo works "as they offer the clearest insight into his personality and inventive potential".

For its fourth release, Zen 2000 scales up from the 45 format and releases its first 12-inch, which, coming in at seven tracks (eight with the digital-only bonus) is either a double-wide EP or an LP in everything but name.

The artist behind it is Mogwaa, a South Korean producer who's built a reputation on meticulous and clean-lined melodies and sharp, glistening drums. Sometimes we find him in the club, slinking through dubby bass wobbles, flittering across breaks, and sometimes we find him in a grassy park, sprawled atop a soft ambient bed. No matter where he is, the trademark voicing is always present.

Here, on A Garden Within, we get equal helpings of both: the A-side is the chill-out room, spacey drifters that pulse through the cosmos and wiggle through underwater currents.

The flip is clubbier fare, with “Rejas” being a nod to electro sounds and “Tranquilizer” being a trippy bit of trance. Bookending the journey is “Melting,” an iceberg slowly cracking and falling into the ocean. “Con Fe” is an encore of sorts; it feels like a reconstituting of “Melting,” the reforming of that track's languid dissolution.

Matt says: Undeniably strong EP taking on downbeat, techno and breaks with a modernist approach. The South Korean producer showing us there's more in his locker than rampant bass and jungle hybrids.

When S KryshNashikhDomov the debut album by MolchatDoma, was released in 2017, it announced a bold new voice in underground music. The album found a passionate audience on Bandcamp and other streaming services and was released on CD and cassette. Sacred Bones Records is proud to present the album on vinyl for the first time.

MolchatDoma (translated as “Houses Are Silent”), founded in 2017 in Minsk, Belarus, stands at the intersection of post-punk, new-wave and synth-pop. Dark yet danceable, and with a heavy dose of goth ethos, their music is reminiscent of the masters that predate them, but make no mistake: MolchatDoma creates a sound and meaning that is immediately recognizable as all their own.

The band is comprised of EgorShkutko, who sings the Russian lyrics in his deep monotone, Roman Komogortsev on guitar, synths, and drum machine, and Pavel Kozlov on bass and synths.

It became a viral hit, garnering over one million views on YouTube and becoming a legitimate phenomenon on Bandcamp. Six separate vinyl pressings of the album have sold out in quick succession, and Sacred Bones Records is now thrilled to bring the record back in print for good.

Do You Like My Tight Sweater? - 2023 Reissue

The English-Irish electronic/dance duo Moloko released their first album Do You Like My Tight Sweater? in 1995. It's one of their most experimental records, before moving on to a more mainstream approach. Róisin Murphy is carrying the album with her versatile vocals, both in range and style, while Mark Brydon created the breakbeats, sound effects, and groovy disco lines. This is electronica at its best, danceable and funky. The album includes their hits “Fun for Me" and "Dominoid", besides fan favorites like “Day for Night” and “Where Is the What If the What Is in Why?”. They never slow down in their exciting music and absurd lyrics, but that's exactly what makes this record unforgettable. A pure joy to dance to all night.

The album showcases Moloko's unique blend of electronic, dance, and experimental pop music with drum and bass and downbeat elements. The title of the album refers to the fact that neither Murphy nor Brydon have medical training, highlighting their focus on creating music rather than pursuing traditional careers.

Statues is the fourth and final studio album by English/Irish electronic music duo Moloko, first released in 2003. The whole album is set up around the different stages of a romantic relationship and how things can fall apart. This fresh album charted all over Europe and eventually went on to become their most popular record. Roisin's voice and the fine handling of the album's instrumentation sets Moloko apart from many other dance duos. The best part of the amazing love between them is coming to an end, making this the ultimate final by the duo.

Things To Make And Do - 2023 Reissue

Things To Make And Do is the third album by the electronic/dance duo Moloko, originally released in 2000. It was a sonic departure for Moloko, with tracks less reliant on electronics and more on live musicians. In addition to the change in musical styles, the album featured new vocal techniques from lead singer Róisín Murphy.

After the release of Things To Make And Do, offers came in for Murphy to guest on others' records, most notably The Psychedelic Waltons, Boris D. and Handsome Boy Modelling School. The album held the record as Echo's fastest-selling UK Platinum record, until beaten by Feeder's The Singles compilation six years later.

Mom’s Spaghetti returns with the fourth instalment of cutting edge club tracks for weak knees and sweaty palms! Once again jam packed with club ready mash-ups ready to light up the club. Opening with a seriously wavy bass-house refix of Cardi B's "Moneybags", titled as "Green Room Anthem" and licensed to rip the roof of the dance. Next one is a bit reduced disco-house jam that tests the sub woofers as it charges out the stack.

"Art of Love" twists Art Of Noise's "Moments In Love" into a heads down, deep tech shudder. Finally "100% Diss" sees some dirty south shit flung over a soaring electro-funk groove for a killer strut that should have the floor voguing around nicely.

                                                    Helen Money And Will Thomas

                                                    Trace

Alison Chesley is an unparalleled cellist and composer who has been making boundaryless music for nearly three decades under the moniker Helen Money. From her work in Verbow to her solo releases, extending to her work as a highly sought after collaborator with Jarboe, Bob Mould, Steve Albini, Neurosis and many more, Chesley has remained a singular voice and a pioneer in expanding the scope and perception of the cello. Will Thomas is an active composer for commercials, TV, and film (GvsE, CSI, The Haunted Swordsman). He has also contributed to several of Helen Money’s solo albums and an ongoing collaboration with Roger Eno. Trace marks Thomas’s and Chesley’s first fully collaborative album, synthesizing their myriad skills as songwriters, performers, and sound artists into vivid, profoundly moving music.

Helen Money and Will Thomas are masters of invoking emotional atmospheres. Their music paints in vibrant hues with outlines blurred, often using dense layers of processed instruments and textural ambience as a backdrop for harmonic tension and melodies. Trace is thrillingly cinematic. Each piece tells a compelling story through ratcheting suspense, twisting shifts, unfurling arcs, and blissful repose. “I don’t compose with a storyline in mind,” says Chesley. “I search for a feeling – a sound. It’s often not until the very end of the process that I realize what I was trying to express.” Chesley’s cello and Thomas’s synthesized textures converse with one another with a sense of curiosity. They each use their highly developed means of conveying emotion through sound and their collaborative natures to accentuate the emotional arc of the compositions. After years supplementing each other’s music and the long isolation of lockdowns, their collaboration’s conversational approach is rich with the electricity of old friends reconnecting. Chesley notes, “I was feeling grateful to be able to do this with someone I had worked with for so long – to be in the studio together again.”

Trace is a masterclass in sound design. Chesley’s formidable skill as a cellist and composer ground the compositions with rich organic sounds of cello and bow. Thomas’s equally deft hand manipulated electronics, keyboards create potent frameworks that bolster the sense of mystery and searching across the album. “Thieves” applies a jittering rhythmic pulse and sampled cello harmonics that tug forward anxiously before distorted cello thrusts transform the piece into something more resolute. The duo of “Half Asleep” and “Half Awake” act as companion pieces, using lush arrangements of cello and piano, each intoning atop steady chordal figures that sound distant and familiar, like meeting a friend in a dream. Chesley and Thomas pursue harmony and discord in equal measure. A thrum of foreboding blurs the lines between their instruments on “Boulevard in Silence,” which embodies wisps of shadow and the cowl of nightfall. Industrial crashes and obliterated bass textures subsume “Tilt” and the gorgeous timbres of “Glass Shattered” swim in waves of dissonance without resolution. “Trace” moves from gentle nudges to a hypnotic thump as the piece grows more rhythmically and sonically dense; each deviation rewarding with unexpected textures and sounds.

Chesley and Thomas’s unique voices as composers remain discernable and present throughout the album, but Trace is a celebration of connection of collaboration with an acute sense of details and the power they convey. On Trace, the duo utilize timbre, tone and dynamics as essential tools in crafting stunning emotive narratives. Together, the duo wield sound with inquisitive aplomb, burrowing into each other’s sonic aesthetics and unearthing irrefutable beauty.

Before The Past - Live From Electrical Audio

Brand new recordings of some classic early MONO songs that have become fan favorites and live staples. MONO formed in Tokyo, Japan in the closing winter weeks of December, 1999. They played their first live shows at the top of the new millennium, and released their first album, Under The Pipal Tree, in 2001. Recorded live in one day on a razor-thin budget, Pipal Tree was an earnest introduction to the curious magic of a band that would eventually become synonymous with monstrously dynamic, contemporary classical rock music. To commemorate those austere beginnings - and celebrate their remarkable longevity - MONO revisit three of their earliest songs, and retrofit them with speaker-destroying upgrades.

Anchored by the towering 16-minute noise opus, "Com(?)", Before The Past - Live From Electrical Audio shows the evolution of MONO's execution, stripping away the strings and layers of guitar overdubs to show just how massive this band can be at their most instrumentally austere. Newly recorded in one day in 2019 with longtime collaborator, Steve Albini - and mixed by Albini with Temporary Residence founder, Jeremy deVine - Before The Past is as much a declaration of the present as it is a document of the past. These songs, which are now 20 years old, feel more powerful and profound than ever; a testament to MONO's enduring dedication to their craft, and their dogged exploration of maximum minimalism

Birmingham Techno paragon Monrella (Mick Harris) doesn't mess about, returning to Trauma Collective with 'Shank', a no-nonsense cut of heads down 909 techno. His analog production strikes a fine balance between solid groove and industrial rumble as the characteristically dry precussion crunches around a relentless synth stab.

Alongside Regis and Surgeon, Harris was an architect of the dark Birmingham sound that blossomed out of club night House of God. He played a key role in the genesis of grindcore in the late 80s as the former drummer of Napalm Death and went on to translate his taste for raw, analog distortion into rugged 4x4 club tools with productions for Regis' ZET label in the mid 90s as Monrella. Several alias projects followed, the broken techno explorations of Fret, beatless dark ambient with Lull and the dub inflected trip-hop / illbient of Scorn.

'Shank' is remixed on the flip by the Berlin-based Force Reaction, a collaborative project from Kwartz and Kaiser, two purveyors of a particularly muscular strain of techno igniting dances across Europe. They last released together on Kaiser's K S R imprint back in 2021 but this is Kwartz's second outing on Trauma Collective after a link up with Monrella on TRM003. Their version introduces reverb and echo to the mix while firmly retaining dancefloor utlity.

Rounding up the B-side is a polyrhythmic and densley textured remix from Héctor Sandoval as Tensal. Sandoval is one half of pioneering Spanish techno duo Exium, and he also contributed to ZET back in 2001. Tensal doubles up on this release, dispatching a second remix in the form of a peak-time thumper available as a digital only bonus track.

Groovin reissue of Hollis P Monroe's deep vocal house classic.
Originally released on Stickman Records in 1997, it's a bass buggin' crowd pleaser with these glitching synthlines that recall Martin Bonds' Reel By Real project. After a deliciously long intro the soulful, Robert Owens inspired vocal drops wrapping the listener in a yearning embrace which perfectly compliments the sensual pads effortlessly drifting through the track.

DJ Decent deploys some seriously squelchy 303s onto those sumptuous pads and adds a tough breakbeat for good measure - flipping the script entirely on his 'Acid Mix'. Meanwhile Wamdue offers up a wobbly tech-house remix, littered with reversed strings and granular fx; drawing out the drama in a more hypnotic fashion.

                                                        Essential stuff for house heads!

Captured from top secret time travel interference pattern experiments, the audio has been magnetically restored to ferric tape from its original crystal recording format. Alongside the crystal recording devices and other psionic broadcasting weapons we found was a small white slip of card that read...

'In the year 6037 thousands of blond Montauk boys (teenagers, not children) were sent to see a city in ruins There was a golden horse statue with a clock in its belly in the middle of the town square. Weird inscriptions were written on the golden horse statue that the Montauk boys were suppose to view. Fact is this appears to be a training exercise.'

Cerberus Future Technologies continues to be the most important underground transmission in Manchester with the freebased lysegia of the Montauk Boys. Hallucinatory machine-dirg taken to the very extremes of our known universe, and beamed back to Earth through a series of red-shift interceptors and plasmionic radio devices. If Ron Hardy and Jamal Moss are currently occupying a distance space station, and are playing back2back in a fog of sherm stick haze and amphetamine soaked bliss then this is what the alien dancers are hearing on't dancefloor. Ste Spandex and friends have not only uncovered a brand new musical form, contextually keeping to Manchester's spirit of pushing things in sonically brand new directions, but they've housed the whole sound in a concept and art form so real and impacting that it feels like it's the start of a whole new cult movement. Possibly the freshest thing in our fine city right now. Highly recommended.

                                                          Temple IV - 2024 Reissue

This is the first vinyl issue for what is arguably Roy Montgomery’s finest solo album, originally released in 1996 on CD. The original album has been enhanced with two newer tracks that constitute side 4 of the album.

                                                            From the original press release:
Few recording artists have aligned the quantity and quality of their releases as well as New Zealand singer/guitarist Roy Montgomery has in 1995. Beginning with kranky's release of the soundtrack for an imaginary film That That Is...Is(Not) by Roy's duo Dissolve early in the year, a series of superb albums and singles have been issued by a variety of labels across the world. Each one of them is a must have. Most recently, the Drunken Fish label released a collection of pastoral drones entitled Scenes From The South Island, singles have appeared on the Roof Bolt and gyttja labels, and further singles are scheduled with Ajax, Siltbreeze and others.

Temple IV is the first solo recording by Roy Montgomery on kranky. The album was recorded by Roy on a 4 track tape deck and then thickened up with monophonic moog. The tracks on the album are thick with interwoven guitar lines and moog drone, inspired by the Guatemalan rain forests and the mysterious ruins of the temple and ruins Roy visited there. Roy Montgomery spent the past year in New York, Chicago and London before returning to New Zealand. While in the UK he played live with Flying Saucer Attack and collaborated with spoken word performer Kirk Lake. A brief tour across the United States in September saw Roy performing before enraptured audiences in New York, Boston, Chicago, Detroit and Los Angeles.

The long overdue recognition of Roy Montgomery as a crucial figure in New Zealand's musical history as a member of The Pin Group, Shallows and Dadamah, is now augmented by his new recordings. Temple IV will serve to extend and deepen that appreciation.

                                                            Mood Taeg

                                                            Anaphora

Mood Taeg (pronounced Mood Tag) is a three-piece Scottish/German musical project split between Düsseldorf and Shanghai. The band name, a term in functional linguistics, is a reference to their day jobs, while the album title Anaphora, meaning reference to that which preceded, or came before, is a further nod to linguistics, and their own musical evolution. Mood Taeg have been described as Neo-Krautrock, combining a contemporary take on the lange gerade drumming style of Klaus Dinger and Jaki Liebezeit with the melodic sensibilities and tones of Michael Rother and Kraftwerk. However, outside of their Krautrock roots, they also cite John Carpenter, Philip Glass, Mastermind Herbie, The Beach Boys, Isao Tomita, LFO, Roy Ayers, Ennio Morricone, and Airto Moreira as musical influences. Production-wise, they look to the work of Conny Plank, Greg Wilson, and Brian Eno for inspiration.

The band self-produce all of their music back and forth between their Shanghai and Düsseldorf studios and are part of the wider Mood Taeg Kollektiv which includes musicians, graffiti artists, DJs, photographers, painters, and video artists. They also maintain their Scottish connection through collaborations with artists such as Dundee poet Andrew French. On this new album, Mood Taeg have built on their well-received debut, Exophora. And while some motorik elements remain, patterns generally eschew repetition and evolve organically within tracks. Emphasis has also moved on from the subtle vocal textures found on Exophora, to stronger, more prominent vocal elements featuring poets (Christopher Logue), cultural critics (Michael Parenti), film makers (Alan P. Chilchier), and trade union activists (Jimmy Reid), who reflect their political, social, and cultural views.

                                                              Franc Moody

                                                              Into The Ether

All the tunes on 'Into The Ether' deal with searching for something, the idea of reaching a promised land, leaving the wind and the rain to head off to sunnier climes and escape from the norm.

The idea of something unattainable. Setting oneself free, and entering into the unknown and the journey that that entails.

It's a journey many of us live day to day in a transient bubble. We visit new and alien lands everyday, meeting strange and surreal characters along the way. We have amazing, intense experiences on the way, like modern day explorers, frontiersmen, space explorers venturing out into the unknown. The longer we stay on the road the more our memory of home slowly fades. This is a metaphor for our mental/spiritual journey; it's not always easy, it's nerve wracking venturing into the unknown but there is growth to be gained from the excitement of new experiences.

We as a group are a disparate set of characters drawn together by a collective aim. Our shared experiences forges a strong bond that overrides any differences we may have on the surface. That collective unity epitomises Franc Moody and we hope is the experience one gets at our live shows.

The landscape we're trying to capture sonically is hugely influenced by the vast expanse of the desert. The scale of our orchestration will mirror this, think Lawrence of Arabia, Paris, Texas, Ennio Morricone. There's a scale to the orchestration that we're desperate to bring to this record, to bring an energy, a show that transcends boundaries.

Romanticising tour life and putting it in glorious technicolour.

The trailblazing South African musician Moonchild Sanelly - real name Sanelisiwe Twisha - signed to Transgressive Records in 2020, kicking off with diverse mini-LP Nüdes. Now, she returns to the international label with her genre-crossing second album Phases. Forming a sonic foundation that veers between Amapiano, Gqom, grime, pop, house and R&B while showcasing her vocal talents on more downtempo songs, Phases 19-tracks document the varying chapters of a toxic relationship and subsequent freedom. A double album, the first side is a journey through the relationship with production reflecting those different moods and aspects of her personality; the second side, meanwhile, leads into a clubbier amapiano space. Collaboration has always been core to Moonchild’s alternate world.

Since her 2015-released award-winning first album Rabulpha! put her on the global map, she has collaborated with local favourites Maphorisa, Sho Madjozi and Thandiswa Mazwai. In the years that followed, she caught the attention of a host of international superstars, leading to high-profile collaborations with artists including Wizkid, Beyonce (featuring on “My Power”) and Gorillaz (on “With Love To An Ex”). Phases is a highly collaborative record, too, with production and guest features from Sad Night Dynamite (their track “Demon” is already a huge hit), Wesley Joseph, Xavier Thomas (Débruit), TOKiMONSTA, Holly and Aramboa.

The album’s title takes on a multitude of meanings: via the range of genres covered across its runtime, the different sounds and styles that it encompasses and the personal journey that Sanelisiwe Twisha has taken to get to this point. But, for Moonchild Sanelly, it’s more literal than that: “I think that, with this album, I’ve managed to piece all the different parts of me together, because I’m known for different things in different parts of the world. I think you get to know me better with Phases - all the different sides of me.”

Beloved Exile is the new studio full-length by Steve Moore, his first non-soundtrack album in over five years, and his first for Temporary Residence Ltd. A prevalent figure of the modern synth era, Moore cofounded the influential synth-prog duo, Zombi, and has scored more than a dozen feature films and TV shows, including The Guest, Crunch Time, and Mayhem. Composed and produced by Steve Moore in his home studio in upstate New York, Beloved Exile is a collaboration with internationally-renowned Tunisian singer-songwriter Emel Mathlouthi, visionary harpist Mary Lattimore, and veteran percussionist Jeff Gretz. Drawing influences from vintage ambient synth libraries, New Age/spiritual music, and menacing horror film canon, Beloved Exile proves to be simultaneously exquisite and deceptively unsettling. It is appropriate, then, that a literary treasure like John Darnielle (The Mountain Goats), would provide the song and album titles – his masterful mind most fitting to put moniker to this mercurial triumph.

New York-based artist Kelly Moran unveils her second album for Warp Records, “Moves in the Field.” As an accomplished and highly sought-after composer, Moran has collaborated with artists such as Oneohtrix Point Never and FKA Twigs as part of their live ensembles. As a solo artist, Moran has developed a unique strand of experimental piano compositions across a critically acclaimed discography.

“Moves in the Field” showcases duets with the Yamaha Disklavier, a technologically advanced version of a player piano. Moran augments her pianistic abilities by utilizing the Disklavier to write intricate piano parts that go beyond human capabilities, resulting in multi-layered compositions that blur the lines between human and machine. Influenced by contemporary classical, alternative, and electronic music, the album stands at a precipice above two unlikely worlds.

Composer, producer, keyboardist and multi-instrumentalist Kelly Moran made an early name for herself in New York collaborating with dance performance and composing for long-term John Cage collaborator Margaret Leng Tan. It was with the 2017 album "Bloodroot" that Kelly Moran began to reach wider attention.

"Bloodroot" made innovative use of piano and electroacoustic instruments, purpose-built by Moran herself and touched upon the many diverse musical styles from which she finds inspiration. It appeared in Albums of the Year lists in experimental (Rolling Stone), classical (New York Times) and metal (New York Observer) genres, reflecting this range. In 2018 she has been performing in prestigious venues around the world as part of Oneohtrix Point Never’s live Age Of tour ensemble.

Now, on her Warp Records debut Ultraviolet she continues to interpret these wealth of inspirations into a sound all her own and pulls off a nearly impossible feat: the annihilation of experimental music’s imposing, esoteric, über-academic status quo in the name of pure, unbridled intuition, of human joy.

'I was squatted down in the forest, listening to the sounds of the wind and the wildlife, and all the echoes surrounding me,' Moran recalls. 'I asked myself: How can I make music that feels like this: natural, connected, and effortless?'

Ultraviolet plays to a wide, arresting array of stylistic influences: dazzling inflections of jazz and dream pop, classical composition and black metal, darkness and light, encapsulated in a single, mystifying LP. 'By re-examining my process as an artist, I freed myself.'

                                                                            WXAXRXP Session

Kelly Moran, one of the more recent and avant garde of Warp's signings eschews the dancefloor in favour of something more freeform and dare-I-say-it, thought-provoking on this new session.

Recorded specifically for Warp's 'TX' series, the five tracks here show off the composer's multi-instrumental and classically trained ear perfectly. "In Parallel" and "Helic 2" are both transmitted acoustically, and demonstrate advanced skill on both harp and piano compositions.

"Interlude 1" opens side B with a tranquil moment of eastern mystery, before "Love Birds" opens up a bouquet of staccato wind chimes. Enchanted and completely ethereal, it's like your stood in a magical mood garden full of Elven-sorcery and sprite-like figures.

"Radian" concludes, a heart wrenchingly powerful solo piano missive with suspended organ drones as underlay.

A breathtaking piece of modern classical mixed with atmospheric electronica and a standout piece from the series. Recommended.

'All Engines Go' kicks off and is a wildly percussive, textural groove with toms, crashing snares, raw hi-hats and plenty of FX all budding the energy before a mad saw tooth basslines spray about the mix to raise the roof. On the flip is 'Bleep Bleep', which is another wild sound with uptempo breaks and bleeps sounding like nothing else out there. Drop these and the crowd cannot fail to lose their heads.

Musicians and composers such as Piero Umiliani, Amleto Armando Roelens and even Ennio Morricone were regularly experimenting with idiosyncratic combinations of jazz, electronic, progressive, disco, funk and psych genres.

It was their mutual love of these 60s and 70s soundtracks that brought Lorenzo Morresi and Tenderlonious together. After performing alongside each other at a festival in Italy back in 2017 the idea was quickly conceived to put together a fresh take starting with that early 1970s Italian style, using contemporary analogue inspired arrangements combined with experimental and joyful 'tongue in cheek' sounds that could work on the dance floor as well as at home.

Tracks like "Nuda Sorgente", "Doppio Sogno" and "Estate" are club oriented with a musical crossover from old- to- new. 'Estate' is a cover from the classic jazz standard by Italian singer Bruno Martino. Tender and Morresi worked tirelessly between Italy and London for approximately 2 years carefully shaping their album 'Cosmica Italiana': "With this project we've done our best to deliver our own interpretation of this wonderful era of Italian music and rediscover a beautiful genre, whilst maintaining a strong respect and admiration for the sounds that those original Italian masters created. Their records impressed and inspired us and we hope it will be the same for our listeners today."

An internationally acclaimed artist who, when it comes to play the traditional Persian instruments, Tonbak and Daf, can single-handedly build an orchestra of sounds that are just as illusionistic as shamanistic. On this EP, "Focus", Mohammad brings us five lush percussion tracks. Expect complex and meditative rhythms in a journey between the throbbing minimal sounds of "Going", "Rebounce", "Floating In The Now" and the elusive hypnotic movements of ‘White Daf’ and ‘Birth Of a Whale".

Paolo Mosca makes intricate, multi-layered electronic music. Inspired by the early club sound pushed by the pioneers from his home region Veneto, he fuses house, trance and ambient - and moves forward. The "Metaphysics EP" displays the artist's passion and ingenuity, unfolding technical skill that makes clear his studio clock is set to 2023 and not 1993. On "Lucidreams" a statically charged beat and organ bass work up a groove. Accompanied by a misty pad and a slow, pensive arpeggiator, it pulses towards the break: there an acid line emerges, finds its spot in the mix, and refuels the track. "Energia" draws from a bolder, more euphoric range. Hand drums, a glittering lead and airy yet restrained chords float soaked in reverb and delay. A lean bass sequence tightly keeps the rhythm as flanged claps and subtly positioned sweeps create extra movement. The second side's opener, "Under The Sea" features a formant filter lead meandering within the sweaty framework of heavily gated choir pads and a frugal bassline that eventually gets layered with an M1. Modulated vocals and strokes of additional melody ensure the stereo field again gets used to its full capacity. "Acqua" is a fitting coda. Some familiar patches are deployed over a tumbling beat that takes charge of the pace from the get-go. The palette might seem bright and blissful, but as always, the track's latticework contains enough contrast for a slight feeling of melancholy to keep simmering beneath. Mosca cited his meditation routine, how it helps him materialize ideas and thoughts, as a main drive upon finishing this record. The "Metaphysics EP" is a ruminative work. Comprised of four explorations in deftly manipulating energy with due attention to balance and momentum, it easily flows between genres, details darting in and out, showing the artist's understanding of composition and dance music history. Mixed and mastered beautifully as well. Highly recommended!

With his deft touch, Ben infuses the track with a modern twist, showering it with his signature drums and analogue wizardry. The result? A colossal sonic experience of this Romano Musumarra produced anthem, that resonates deep within your soul, paying homage to the song’s origins, its entrancing melodies, its pulsating rhythms, and above all, its sheer originality. Close your eyes and surrender to the nostalgia of bygone days, whisked away on a euphoric journey to the vibrant 80s. The 'Evolution' mix, featured on the B-Side, is almost 12 minutes long and takes the track down a more modern, house flavoured route, with beefy low end, high end kinetics and dizzy organ stabs; bringing this bona fide album right up to the present day. Crucial!

As A Closer Listen wrote in its Top Ten Modern Composition list for 2021, “few musical voices represent so well the estrangement and intensity of our times; Moss is among the best of them.” Galaxy Heart consolidates this assessment, revealing the more exploratory and extemporaneous side of her profoundly expressive instrumental lyricism. Where Phosphenes showcased some of Moss’ most deliberate and accomplished post-classical compositions to date, Galaxy Heart quivers with a raw and searching energy, juxtaposing rough-hewn and honed pieces. Expanding the palette to include spiky semi-improvised electric guitar along with remotely-recorded guest contributions from drummer Jim White (Xylouris White, Dirty Three) and contrebassist Thierry Amar (Godspeed You! Black Emperor) on a couple of tracks, the album inscribes a (mostly) instrumental space of bristling anguish, melancholia, resoluteness and conviction.

Opening with the distorted dissonant string clusters of “Resistance Creature” and the through-composed knock-out “Uncanny Being”, with White’s roiling drums and Amar’s upright bass the simmering substratum for Moss’ alternately gritty and rounded violin movements, Galaxy Heart pivots to electric guitar and sludged post-industrial drone on “This Continuous Spectrum”, a descending melodic motif recurring over doomy low-end bursts and a slow broken-steam engine beat. Side One closes with two vocal tracks: “Is There Room For All Of It” (again featuring White and Amar) has Moss singing and playing organ in a spine[1]tingling longform unison melody; the chilling title track “Galaxy Heart” calls back fractured electric guitar and droning pulse, with Moss belting out initially strangled, strident lines that give way to gently layered voicings in a cratered spaciousness these dynamics then cycling forward like the sequences of a dying star. Side Two features three superb violin études, each distinguished by Moss’ distinctively amplified violin timbres and her unique ear for the tropes of various folk traditions, interspersed with the plaintive but stately vocal song “Enduring Oceans”, and closing with “Opened Ending”, her mesmerizing contribution to Constellation’s Corona Borealis Longform Singles Series from 2020, previously released only as a digital track and short film by indie legend Jem Cohen (Fugazi’s Instrument documentary, Benjamin Smoke, Museum Hours). Galaxy Heart is cosmic music of dark matter and interstellar dust, of gravitational waves and celestial grit that connect messy terrestrial life with its human, animal, natural suffering and beauty to chaotic and unruly universal forces.

Kassem Mosse - purveyor of fierce, radically strange and thoroughly uncompromising frequencies and rhythms, always looking into new directions to take electronic music. On this outing, out of his current home at Honest Jon's, we get lush drum machine nocturnes, gnarly electronica and glorious flowerings of zoned-out dubspace. Whether prepared solo, or jointly with his partner in crime, Mix Mup; a Kassem Mosse recording is less of a stand-alone creation than the next thrilling installment of an unstoppable groove. True to form, "Disclosure" dazzlingly extends some of the most mystical, dancefloor-rooted music of the last decade. From dusty, dream-state techno on Workshop and Mikrodisko, to frazzled beatdowns on Trilogy Tapes and Nonplus. Pedigree techno and house are the lifeblood of "Disclosure", yet with something newly microscopic about them. Its mesmerizing juggle of pointillist percussion, melting-wax chords and fleshy bump’n’grind suggests biological processes at work, as if Mosse has zoomed right into the cellular metabolism ticking away at the core of the music. These textures are woven into some of KM’s richest and most emotionally complex material so far, constantly enlivened by forays into jazz, dub and beyond. Check the farty-bottom, broken-down, steel-pan minimalism of "Collapsing Dual Core", just the job for cruising around Detroit in a car at night; and "Phoenicia Wireless"' dastardly, intricate combination of glowering John Carpenter synths, heavy static and junked consoles on remote, as if the beats are fighting a wave of dirt, soot and fossilization. The frantic, interstellar tarantella of "Galaxy Series 7"; the wonky bump-and-hustle and heavy-lidded drama of "Purple Graphene", to close, are all signposts on Mosse's natural journey through sound.
Expertly pieced-together and paced, "Disclosure" brilliantly registers all the self-contained coherence and artistic authority of an album proper, yet shadowed throughout by the open-ended and questing spirit so vital to Mosse’s music. Its intimate enactments of non-closure, and its sense that anything could happen at any moment; its thematic play between excess and incompleteness, babble and tongue-tied stutter, grooving and entropy, wobble and the pause-button leave the listener both fully invigorated yet gagging for more.

'The United Kingdom has long been an ardent supporter and consumer of African-American music. Dating back to the electrifying earliest performances of blues artists like Big Bill Broonzy during the early 1950s – an influence on Eric Clapton and John Lennon – right through to the dawn of Chicago house and onwards. In fan clubs, like the Tamla Motown Appreciation Society, started by soul writer Dave Godin, to the numerous fan magazines that have documented dance music culture from Blues & Soul to Mixmag, there has been an extended obsession with black music culture.

This lineage continued into the house era, our generation’s defining dance genre, and one with which British producers were swift to adopt. This record is a prime example of this. Although Mother Tongue was a one-off project, its history is rooted in this long-standing culture stretching back decades. The main man behind Mother Tongue was a drummer and record producer named Richie Stevens. Stevens was steeped in music and the industry, thanks to his father, John Stevens, also a professional drummer. Stevens senior played in numerous jazz ensembles during the 1960s and onwards, including performing with Tubby Hayes, Ronnie Scott, Evan Parker, Derek Bailey and was a session player with John Martyn (among numerous others) during Martyn’s finest period (it’s John’s drumming you can hear on ‘Big Muff’).

His son, Richie, was playing professionally while still a teenager for the Dennis Bovell Dub Band and has subsequently backed everyone from Tina Turner and Simply Red to Hugh Masekela and George Clinton. He is also a long-term collaborator with Boy George. But the story of Mother Tongue begins with a band called Well Red. This group, effectively a studio creation by Richie and his then manager Martin Poole, recruited vocalist Lorenzo Hall, a fixture on the London reggae scene and sold the concept to Virgin Records. Well Red yielded two albums – Motion and Respect Due – but never really got the crossover success their songs perhaps deserved. “Virgin were very supportive of us,” recalls Poole, today. “They gave us a lot of money. They pumped money into it, and it never quite paid off, but we did okay. We recouped and got to make a second album with George Clinton. It was a good move, recording with him. It did us a lot of good here and in America. We did pretty well in the US. We were very well-supported over there.”

This same team, working in a tiny studio near Richie’s house in Wood Green, north London, called The Watershed, produced ‘Message Is Love’. It features the vocals of Syn-Dee (Sindy Finn) and Lovebase (Louise Porter), who co-wrote the track with Richie and Alan Lane, another Stevens collaborator, and Ian ‘Spy’ Austin, who’d previously played in the same reggae band, The Instigators, as Lorenzo Hall from Well Red. “Remember it well,” says Martin Poole. “We were just writing it there and then in the studio. It was me, Richie, Spy, and I think Syn-Dee was there as well. When I got home later, Richie played it to me over the phone and I said, ‘That just sounds brilliant,’ from how we'd started it off, you know?” Thanks to their experience in the studio with Well Red, they managed to produce a song that has the timeless feel of all good music.

Mother Tongue was the opening track on a compilation called On The Loose Volume 1 on their own Furious Fish Records. Every track on the album, despite having different artist credits, was done by Stevens and Poole, often using a rotating cast of characters that had also appeared on ‘Message Of Love’. Although it did not sell especially well at the time, it’s become a collector’s item over the years. This is the first time Mother Tongue has appeared as a 12-inch single, a long overdue (but very welcome) happening.'

Obviously indebted to Chicago, it's an early and brilliant example cross-pollination and adoption from our fertile soils.

Motoko & Myers is made up of Wonja & DJML, both of whom have blessed electronic music in numerous ways together and individually, via releases on Jacktone, DJing together for their Herzog Hideout radio transmissions, and their amazing album from 2018, "Basis Key".

M+M make music from a really special place: wild tones, drum-machine-breaths and weird, pitched synth space combine with a sense of rhythm that folds in on itself, nodding to both kraut and Detroit techno blueprints; tipping their hat to Manuel Gottsching and Carl Craig but insisting on dressing in their own style. Gentle, electronic winds seem to guide their arrangements, rather than any linear human interaction. Rhythms come into focus over long distances, then dissipate over oceans of sound. It's certainly a beguiling and entrancing listen...

Three years after he released the incredible "New Experience EP" (picking up plaudits from Bill Brewster, Tim Sweeney, Laurent Garnier, Horse Meat Disco, Leo Mas & 6Music’s Tom Ravenscroft, among many more), Tokyo’s Kota Motomura returns to Hobbes Music for his debut LP, "Pay It Forward". This is the first vinyl release on Hobbes Music since the much-loved "Aranath" EP by Leonidas & Hobbes last Spring. While the label maintains the level of quality control for which it has become recognized, the artist continues to subvert electronic and dance music norms in his iconoclastic way on this extraordinary record.

He’s a mysterious character with an ear for idiosyncratic music that runs the gamut from ambient, exotica and jazz to disco, house and techno via post punk, new wave and funk. It’s highly original and all adds up to a confection perhaps best described as Balearic, despite how tumultuous that word has become of late!

Album opener "Paradise" is a certified jazz-funk jam. Destined for dancefloors worldwide, this one’s been dropping well with DJs, Motomura demonstrating his piano chops alongside Mutsumi Takeuchi’s sax. "Tropical" pushes the boat in a more rhythmic direction, some pretty wild drum programming laced with more sounds of the, um, tropics, before mad vocal yelps suggest something yet more tribal. "To Be Free" initially resembles early 90s progressive house (pulsing bassline, synth-driven melodies), before the arrival of some new wave guitar licks a la classic Talking Heads / David Byrne and ooh ooh vocal chants take it to another dimension altogether.

B-side opener "Emotion" features Takeuchi again (on flute this time) and more vocal chants before things take a dramatic turn, threatening to open up into a full fanfare before calming and then bursting into wild life again. Rhythm flirts with an energy and pace more akin to a techno record: drums, drums, more drums plus a fair few yelps and chants - the kind of DJ tool that will send a simmering dance floor wild in the right hands. "Flower" closes things in a more melancholy style, familiar to fans of "Aboy" from the "New Experience" EP, with plaintive acoustic guitar (performed by Akichi), birdsong and big piano chords.

Support from Bill Brewster, Leo Mas, Al Kent, Red Rack’em, Nick The Record, Phil Mison, Phat Phil Cooper, KZA, Sean Johnston (ALFOS), S/A/M, Dribbler, Joe Muggs, Monolith Cocktail and more…

                                                                                    Bleep # 1 - Whitey Remix

This long awaited comeback single for Mr. No and Bryan Black is a taster for their forthcoming album "Unhuman". The duo's new material has taken a mutant disco-tech hybrid and coerced it into a sleeker and more mature sound that smoothes the edges yet retains the attitude of their previous clubland destroying singles. The first example of this is new single "Bleep #1", which as its name suggests builds around a incessant computer bleep groove and rolling bass synth, creating a dynamic and pulsating bionic bontempi rhythm. The flipside is remixed by Whitey, who adds even more bleeps and squeaks.

Mouche (real name Tim Karmouche) returns to Australian label Research Records with another full-length of imaginary soundtracks, instrumentals and sun-kissed digital jazz. Active on the Melbourne scene in projects such as Crepes/The Murlocs/Swazi Gold/Dreamin' Wild, Tim's first album Live From The Bubble arrived back in 2020 as an ode to his aptly named studio space - The Bubble.

Lake Songs builds on those same atmospheres, showcasing the inward-looking craft of his one-man band. Cicada field recordings and light keys open proceedings, reflecting the warmer side of 80s new age, though before long we're introduced to a variety of stylistic shifts incorporating elements of cosmic funk, lounge and library-style compositions. There are traces of Steve Hiett, Max Groove or even the recently re-discovered Ronald Langestraat, though the strength of Mouche's talent for harmony shines through on its own level.

Shifting between moods yet reflecting an overarching sense of positivity, listening through the ten tracks gives off a real sense of place, though time is somewhat irrelevant. The warm climate and sandy beaches of Australia seem eternally embodied in 'Juice' or 'Crystal Water'. Perhaps where Live From The Bubble was dedicated to the very studio that birthed it, Lake Songs is dedicated to the vast land that surrounds it.

                                                                                      TRACK LISTING

MK 3.5: Die Cuts | City Planning

MK 3.5: Die Cuts | City Planning shows how Dom Maker and Kai Campos have grown over the past decade, and demonstrates the two sides of Mount Kimbie’s aesthetic coin - each side produced entirely by either member. Dom’s side, Die Cuts, is colourful and melody-led, thriving on the spark of collaboration; Kai’s, City Planning, is tactile and unpredictable, the product of a deeply personal aesthetic voyage. The two sides complement each other through their contrasts. But in other ways they’re not so different. Both artists present a unique vision which stands apart from their peers; neither side could have been made by anyone but Mount Kimbie.

Die Cuts, produced by Dom, was inspired by his move to LA half a decade ago, around the same time as the band’s old friend and collaborator James Blake. The pair began doing production sessions with a series of increasingly big names from the world of rap and hip-hop, including Jay-Z, Travis Scott, ASAP Rocky, SZA, and Rosalia, among many others. Dom’s collaborative work is going from strength to strength, hitting a recent high with his and James’ headturning work on Slowthai’s ‘Feel Away’.

Die Cuts is a reflection of this nascent community and Dom’s producerly vision. Skipping between hip-hop, RnB, and electronic pop, the album combines high class songcraft with a delicate leftfield touch, and showcases a cast of vocalists including longtime friends James Blake and Slowthai, alongside new collaborators Danny Brown, Reggie, Nomi, Keiyaa, Wiki, Liv.e, Kucka and Choker.

Kai’s side began after the duo’s finest record yet, 2017’s Love What Survives, led to a period of extensive touring. Back home, he was hungry for a change of pace. He found it in DJing, which offered a new kind of performance - unplannable, unpredictable, and thrilling. He has since become a seasoned DJ, clocking in at the finest festivals (Field Day, Dekmantel, Melt) and clubs (Printworks, Fabric, Sub Club, Concrete) and recording numerous mixes, including a slick DJ-Kicks mix in 2018. Following this, he embarked on a project of "intense listening and thinking about listening,” immersing himself in new sounds and music-making approaches.

The outcome of this creative journey is City Planning. Wild, warped and loopy, the album twists avant-garde signifiers from on and off the dancefloor into a deft and refined statement. Its sleek beats and stuttering arpeggios are caked with scuzz and personality, making for an album that’s warm and inviting even at its most confrontational.

The South London duo, comprised of Dom Maker and Kai Campos, have created a deeper and more complex album than their 2010 debut ‘Crooks And Lovers’, featuring vocals from both the band themselves and guest vocals from King Krule, alongside crisp beats and production, brooding melodies and electronic soundscapes. 'Cold Spring' places live instrumentation alongside the electronics, with organ and drums enriching the sonic mulch. What's more, there are vocals, too, enabling a step into a newly emotional approach.

For fans of Burial, Gold Panda, SBTRKT, Thom Yorke, Bonobo, James Blake, Caribou, The xx, Kindness etc.

It's been a fascinating process that has changed us as a band and we're feeling great about how it's come together. Can't wait to share our third album with you”

“Love What Survives” is the long awaited third studio album from Mount Kimbie. It’s the most confident statement of intent from the boundary-pushing duo yet, and an embodiment of their career-long musical progression.

‘Blue Train Lines’ demonstrates the progression and evolutionary journey the band have embarked on since the release of 2013’s “Cold Spring Fault Less Youth”. The track centres on a motorik rhythm section, heightened and enhanced by long-time collaborator and friend King Krule’s jagged vocal bursts and pulsing synths.

The album is the product of three years of intense creative development, continually honed by the duo writing and rewriting their ideas to form something wholly idiosyncratic and personal. It brings together the voices of their close friends and collaborators - who together represent a corner of the UK’s young artistic talent - James Blake, Micachu and King Krule, within the immersive, unique atmosphere of a Mount Kimbie album.

The record’s expansive nature is indebted to the fact it was made between London where Kai Campos resides and Los Angeles where Dom Maker moved in 2016. The duo would travel back and forth to work together, cultivating ideas in intensive sessions. For Maker, putting down roots in a foreign city with its cultural differences and geographical vastness was alienating at first but it gave fresh perspective and inspiration.

A Semblance of the gritty, energetic UKG aesthetic seeping into the fractured beats and subby kick, while electronic glimmers and low-fi punk influences from across the pond are smoothly and euphorically juxtaposed into audio gold by these talented producers.

The second Mount Kimbie remix package and Warp have enlisted another celebrity selection of producers to work with tracks from "Love What Survives".

The second 12” features two takes on album opener "Four Years and One Day". The first is a slow burning techno throbber from Marcel Dettmann, complete with concentric kick patterns and that Blade Runner growl and metallic flux that he's made his trademark over many years, hundreds of productions and literally days and nights behind turntables. Climaxing in a catastrophic explosion of iron girders and phosphorous explosions it pairs perfectly the visceral punk attitude of Mount Kimbie with the relentless anarco-techno ethos of the Berlin techno scene.

German house maverick Gerd Janson is enjoying an extended period in the spotlight at the moment, and rightly so, effortlessly conjuring an accomplished remix of "Four Years..." with a driving, fashionably close to EBM kinda sound that'll still work in the purist of house sets. Beautifully decorated with a tantalizing 303 line and angelic pad sequences and arranged with maximum elevation in mind, this is one track you're bound to be hearing on the big stages this Summer.

Finally, if you needed any more convincing, "T.A.M.E.D" gets drawn out into a mid-session techno romp by another German legend: Ellen Alien. Taking up the entirety of side B this is perfectly for those looong warehouse sessions when you need to give the lightning engineer summat to do while you enjoy watching the dancefloor slowly catch fire. Just the right side of proggy (read: druggy) and with mind melting, time shift vox flowing in the recesses of the mix, this is an impressive display of a producer with complete control of large, uninhibited crowds. Once the dancefloor hive mind gets locked onto this one anything's possible.

Kimbie’s founding members Dominic Maker & Kai Campos began work on their first proper album together since 2017’s Love What Survives – the decision was made to leave London. Campos and Maker relocated for a month to a town in the middle of a desert. The resulting album, finished in London with longtime confidante Dillip Harris and their band mates Andrea Balency-Béarn and Marc Pell, is 37 minutes of Mount Kimbie at simultaneously their most daring and their most giddily infectious.

While all the usual MK sounds are in-situ here, there outer reaches of their sound swerves into synth-pop, gritty electronics and moody post-punk.

Another newer addition to the ranks, Mount Kimbe records a brand new session for the label comprised of four tracks: "You Look Certain", "Delta", "Marilyn" featuring Micachi and "Made To Stray".

A far cry from Dominic Maker and Kai Campos's dubstep-indebted beginnings, "You Look Certain" and "Delta" contain technicoloured, spiraling, almost psychedelic leads - buzzsaw synths, purring organs and motorik drums propelling the tracks forward at a rate of knots.

"Marilyn", one of the duo's biggest tracks, is re-done achieving new levels of intimacy through a slightly stripped back and live sounding arrangement. Finally "Made To Stray" from 2013's "Cold Spring Fault Less Youth" closes off the EP with one of their more introspective, yet vastly gigantium pieces.

It was just one of the many names he was testing out for his imaginary groups and if things had gone differently, this album would be credited to Hyperion Illusion.

Expertly mastered by Antony Ryan at RedRedPaw and mostly sourced from long lost cassettes rescued from chaotic rehearsal rooms and the apartments of Glasgow friends, Deltic Vespers contains the pre Ghost Box recordings and is the ultimate statement on Mulholland's early experimentations. It's like peering into a disorderd vision of an alternative 1990's where instead of Britpop and it's phony psychedlia-lite, we got the full strenght Owsley acid version. The electronic elements are also there from the start, pulled from the unlikliest of sources and proving that Mulholland's invention and drive to get the sounds down has been there since day one. Fantastic stuff now preserved for posterity. You're welcome.

Emerging from a primordial ooze of rolling bass and skittering electronics, hypnotic polyrhythms and pulsing synthesizers propel the listener across the record’s expanse. Hidden in the duo’s hyper-detailed productions is a kind of meta-narrative.

Working with AI tech collective Birds on Mars and former Soundcloud programmers Ranny Keddo and Derrek Kindle, the duo collaborated on the creation of bespoke software capable of modelling speech; text and voice from writer and scholar of African Studies Louis Chude-Sokei and DJ/producer Yağmur Uçkunkaya were fed into the software as a model, allowing Toma and Werner to control parameters like speed or mood, thereby creating a kind of speech instrument they could control and play as they would a synthesizer.

The album’s narrative is quite literally mirrored in the music - the sound of an artificial intelligence growing, learning and speaking. This exploration of artificial intelligence as both a narrative framework and compositional tool, allowing the duo to summon their most explicitly science-fiction work to date.

With their anarchic mixture of sound that oscillates between uncontrollable chaos and meticulously arranged structures, Jan St. Werner and Andi Toma have forged a unique musical language which is readily decomposed by the unpredictability of its myriad mutations. Free from schools of thought, genre conventions andfrom the constraints of the music establishment, they have worked under the Mouse On Mars alias for 24 years, mapping their own idiosyncratic trajectory through a no man’s land between pop, art, club music and the avant-garde.

Right after "Parastrophics" was released in February 2012, Mouse on Mars started collecting the ideas for "WOW", a bass heavy club orientated album. The final assemblage took about 5 weeks and was finished by the end of July. "WOW" is based on immediacy. A bass drama of three letter words. Intuition, Punch, Massiveness.

The host who leads through the entire album is Dao Anh Khanh whom the band met during their Asia tour 2011. Dao is a performer and sculptor from Vietnam, who invented a fantasy language which the band recorded together with him in an arcane Hanoi studio.

Further voice contributions are from the Argentinian girl punk band Las Kellies and Eric D. Clarke. All together it makes a story which is epic, abstract, intense and ridiculous at the same time. Mouse on Mars gone theatrical.

Their innovative and influential works keep inspiring electronic music producers today, showcasing their willingness to collaborate and push the boundaries of electronic music.

Translated, we're talking about minimal house that carries their warm trademark sound, enriched by pulsating echoes, space noises, and relapsing vocoder shreds. It conveys the pair's unique energy that embraces the improvisational moment to create a hypnotic flow that's nothing but timeless.

"Reissued 2" is a true testament to the innovative spirit and pioneering work of Move D and Pete Namlook. With these tracks now available on vinyl for the first time, AWAY's limited series is a must-have for old and new fans alike.

Hard to believe they're at least 15 & 17 years old! Previously only available on CD, this is a real vinyl treat!

Mr Beatnick & Richard Greenan present their debut full length collaboration, "Coasty". Brought together by their twin residencies on NTS Radio, the duo have forged distinct paths in respective scenes over the last decade - as producers, DJs and label heads of imprints Mythstery and Kit Records.

The strength of their partnership is built on contrasting styles; Mr Beatnick's sound orbits the woozier fringes of house and hip-hop, while Richard Greenan has settled in the cracks between ambient, textural experimentation and the avant-garde. Here, these approaches coalesce in unexpected ways - with violin, harp, guitar and saxophone finding themselves serrated by volleys of percussion and punchily melodic bass.

With much of the music recorded during the pair's residency in Margate, the album documents a weekend toasted and skewed progressively sideways. The opening salvo of cascading synth muscle ("Goodnight Mush") and fragmented acoustic stepper ("Superb Crafty Gardens") could evoke Devo and Pete Rock breaking fried toast over a dirty fry up. Side A's pop sensibilities peak on the lucidly string-laden "Harbour Arms", complete with pristine guest vocal by bb sway.

Then, like the work of a pair of pissed beavers, things start to get pretty weird. Familiar structures ferment laterally, from the midi swamp-hop of "Bellows of the Earth", to the cooked techno-funk stylings of "Bronze Pears". "How to Draw Roger" offers a magma-like credits roll, the sun's purple yolk poached over a hoppy sea of amber.

                                                                                                        TRACK LISTING

                                                                                                        8. How To Draw Roger

MPC grooves meet modular textures downtown on Mr Beatnick's "Joy in Variation", his third and most floor-focussed album to date. Steeped in the language and form of hip hop production techniques and shaped by his musical education propping up the wall of London clubs like Plastic People in the early noughties, the album offers eight playful dancefloor experiments in poly-rhythm, tempo-change and the colourful palettes opened up by modular synthesis exploration.

From the swing and bump of "Joy In Variation" and "Shuffle the Bud", to the tempo-switching beatdown of "Shapeshifter", vintage boogie-funk on "When This Is Over" and even a playful take on Tangerine Dream's 1983 staple "Love On A Real Train", this is a varied set designed to hit hard enough for club play, but stay chilled enough for deeper home listening.

"Joy In Variation" is further evidence of why Mr Beatnick's late noughties cuts like "Synthetes" and "Ice Cream Strut" continue to stay close to the boxes of discerning djs after all this time, and why his NTS Radio show has built such a dedicated following over the last decade.

                                                                                                        Radar Rider / F.I.S.T (ED001 18th Anniversary)

Ok, an 18th anniversay edition is a bit weird, but being as this was the first (and arguably the best) 12" on Ed Banger, the globe conquering Parisian label of the noughties, and featured a blinder from the dearly departed Philippe Zdar under his A Bass Day alias, I'm totally on board.

So, what will you hear on this limited white vinyl repress? Well, on the A-side we get a break heavy bit of downbeat psychedelia from Mr Flash, who assembles flanged hats and heavy drums with a blorping Scruff-styled bassline, then chops a few tasty samples from Floyd's "Echoes" for good measure. Meanwhile on the flipside, Zdar drops a frisky little e-funk wriggler complete with filter funk melodies and a hip-twisting bassline.

                                                                                                          Mr Flash “Radar Rider“
A Bass Day (aka Zdar) “F.I.S.T”

The crucial Mr K is back with a special repress for Record Store Day 2024. This one throws it back to his two superb edits of Kratwerk's 'Trans Euro Express' which is cited often as the start of techno. Side A offers stripped-down, bare drum bones, with naked drums shaped into futuristic fusion, while Part II adds synthetic context. Deconstructing Kraftwerk's original sci-fi masterpiece at a slow, smouldering pace, it presents a classic in an entirely new light. This release unlocks doors of serious DJ creativity and should be snapped up quickly before it's gone again.

As a producer he makes music that draws on these influences, with a large dose of cheek and good humour.

16 years since the release of his classic album “Ninja Tuna”, the record will be released for the first time on vinyl in the form of a deluxe 3LP black biovinyl housed in a greyboard gatefold sleeve and featuring infinity peelable tuna sticker on the cover.

The word legendary gets bandied around with increasing frequency, but in house music circles that aren't many more worthy of that particular epithet than Larry Heard. The man's forays onto vinyl are ever more occasional since his well-documented withdrawals from the scene, so when an Alleviated 12" comes along it's a big deal in our book. "You Rock Me" conveys all the classic Heard sounds with its gentle tempo, careful textures and understated, old school vocals from Mr Chris. "The Sun Can't Compare" is instantly different, drawing on Mr Fingers acid for a faster and wholly electronic backing with those ageless drum sounds. Originally released back in October 2006, this 12" is one of the most requested records we've had in eons - back again for 2024 they don't get much more timeless than this.

                                                                                                            A. You Rock Me
                                                                                                            B. The Sun Can't Compare

Chicago house royalty Mr. Fingers returns on his own Alleviated Records imprint with a brand new album!!! Larry Heard continues on the path he's set with "Cerebral Hemispheres" in 2018, encasing his luxurious deep house workouts with influences from jazz, gospel and ambient.

The delicate percussion lines that have become synonymous with the producer, especially on his "Electric Blue" series have reach a higher level of clarity and propulsion; effortlessly ushering you through fluffy crowds and dreamy horizons. Lead lines and chord progressions to melt hearts flow through the ten tracks like emotive butter; there's few that engage machines in such a spiritual and communicative way as Mr. Fingers.

Vast, expansive arrangements, perfectly plotted through this imaginary soundscape; the LP takes you on a deep, vivid journey rich with exotic nuances as Larry explores Eastern scales and far-away timbres. There's even some moments of Balearic island bliss; lolloping waves and drifting vocals adding to an air of coastal decadence.

In short, a beautifully realized, sophisticated and picturesque long player from one of house music's longest serving and charismatic players. Highly recommended!

Maturing nicely, this might be his most musical and diverse offering yet. Containing plenty of 'proper' songs - with writting vocal parts, musings into downtempo and Balearic are fully realized showing the vast breadth of musicality contained within this singular producer. Languid and relaxed, it's a noticeable divergence from the urgency and energy of the dancefloor and will make superb living room listening.

During the first lockdown of covid Mr. Ho released '000Baby' as part of the digital 'Homeboys' EP alongside Luca Lozano. An alternative version popped up on the 'Michaelsoft' album in 2021 but the much lauded original has never seen the light of day on wax....until now. The first 10" on Klasse Wrecks also features a suped and sped up interpretation from Om Unit, who expertly increases the pressure with deft 808 bass subs, a half time swagger and dubbed out atmospherics.

New from California born Taylor FreelsTaylor Freels aka Liquid Earth and we gotta say, this is some of the freshest house music we've heard for a while!

Quirky and squelchy in parts, deep and dubby in others, but with a raw carnival spirit running through; it's built for the big soundsystems and outdoor parties, and, as yet, is still deliciously underground.

"Beat Girl Beat Boy" twists minds and wiggles hips with its amalgamation of filter house, botchit breaks and daft vox - fun yet hefty enough to get the crowd bumping. "Funk Patrol" deploys squashed funk licks to another almost-new-school-breaks rhythm section that should keep b-boys and fans of Skint, Les Ryhthm Digitales and even Armand Van Helden (there's a bit of "Ultrafunkula" in there if you ask me!) more than happy.

"Bug Collector" on side B takes things a bit more bassbin orientated, taking cues from US legends like Murk and Todd Terry, with a proggy edge binging it back to mid 90s UK influences. Finally, "The Wind Up" concludes with an anthemic, foundation shaking warehouse wobbler. Full frontal bass, rave stabs, Sheffield bleeps and brick busting rhythms certifying this one as an absolute banger!

Not in a retro perverse way; it's just got that funky, stylish spirit that screams of a time more innocent yet decadent than our current climate.

Planet Mu Recording artist, Gobstopper label boss, and Boxed club night founder Mr.Mitch provides the third release of 2019 for Pressure. This strictly limited, blue and yellow splattered vinyl platter is futurist dancehall at its most exhilaratingly demented. Random synth patterns, chaotic bleep emissions and all round oscillating madness ensures this furiously fresh track, flows freakily, like a bogle frenzied droid transmitting from Kingston, Jamaica, year 2049. Kevin Martin aka The Bug, nagged Mitch into submission, to release this acid-ragga (new genre alert..?! - ed) killer, after the label CEO, heard "Not Modular" standing out clearly from Mitch’s gobsmacking one hour "Techno Dancehall Mix" at the end of 2018.

And as a tribute to South East London don dada Mitch, The Bug himself decided to slice, splice and dice "Not Modular" into two additional atomised remixes. The Bug’s ‘Straight’ remix, is sub aquatic bashment, pulsating deeply from the bottom of the ocean, buried in a blizzard of white noise and disembodied, hypnotic chimes, with panic sirens set to stun. Whilst the ‘Raw remix’ is no less disorientating and funky, sounding like Lenky’s classic ‘Diwali’ riddim rewritten by an 808 clap addict, with hips set to full rotation. Conclusively alien and ridiculously infectious.

Peripatetic composer, performer, improviser, and designer Jon Mueller is a busy guy, and both the rock and experimental music scenes are the richer for it. As a drummer he propels the ecstatic whorl of Collections of Colonies of Bees and the occasional guitar army of Rhys Chatham; alternately his solo project, Metals, is the most harrowingly intense percussive barrage you'll ever encounter. He also finds time to collaborate with artists ranging from Wilco's Glenn Kotche to Swans' Jarboe. Whether it's minimalist bombast, free-improv interplay, or electroacoustic finesse, Mueller's got it covered. But what can he do with a guitar? In "Strung", Mueller doesn't play the guitar; he scrambles its molecules. Laying down a photon-blast of sound, he initiates a relentless, rapid-pulse attack signal that summons wave upon wave of white noise. Think inexorable alien invasion – The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Lou Reed as Klaatu and "Metal Machine Music" as the message. Earth doesn't stand a chance.

Classically trained at Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts under the renowned cellist and conductor Michael Sanderling, Anne Müller performed as a cellist in many of Berlin’s symphonies for some time before choosing a different path with her music and focussing on novel approaches to classical instrumentation. A profound believer in the power of artistic collaboration, Anne’s skilled cello playing and instinctive composition became extremely sought after. Following her work with Nils Frahm, an enduring partnership with singer-songwriter-composer Agnes Obel ensued, touring for five years together and featuring on two albums (Philharmonics and Aventine) and most recently, working with multiinstrumentalist Markus Sieber (aka Aukai) on his 2019 album Reminiscence. In between all this, Müller also co-founded the progressive live project Solo Collective along with violinist/singer Alex Stolze and pianist/conceptual artist Sebastian Reynolds, releasing Solo Collective Part One in 2017.

A solo record in every sense of the word, Müller wrote, recorded, arranged and produced Heliopause. The album is named after the boundary where the sun’s wind ceases to have influence. It is ultimately, the border of our solar system. The name struck a chord with Müller since the two voyagers sent on an exploratory mission 42 years ago, recently crossed the Heliopause, entering into interstellar space and losing power from our own sun. Müller recognised herself in this moment, not only approaching the same age, but also breaking new ground; having relied on collaborating with so many other stars and now venturing into the unknown with her first solo statement; “Heliopause marks the end of a long journey but also the start of voyages to explore strange new worlds” Boldly opening the album with Being Anne, it sees Müller embrace her new found freedom with the most experimental piece on the record, placing the cello in a completely new context. Playing the strings of a broken down piano with a plectrum and scratching parts of the key mechanism to produce a rhythm, the once lost instrument is given a new lease of life among looped cello drones and drums. “I used the sounds of a tiny piano I got from my mother that she bought when she was a student and didn’t have any money. Later it stood for years in our little summer garden house, where I practiced on it constantly for my piano lessons. Even though it’s old and not in the best shape, I love the way it sounds and call it my little circus piano”.

The atmospheric swells of noise on Being Anne are juxtaposed beautifully with the most stripped back and exposed song, Solo? Repeat!. The J.S. Bach and Gaspar Cassadó influenced piece sees Müller go solo in its purest form: unaccompanied cello. Lead single Nummer 2 is so titled as it’s the second piece Anne ever wrote. A mixture of old sounds and newer structures, its repeated arpeggio conjures drama and displays Müller’s dexterous production abilities. Drifting Circles meanwhile provides the album’s climax, amid an orchestra of looped cellos and vocals. Referencing the minimalism of contemporary composers such as Steve Reich and Philip Glass, it builds to a crescendo of harmonics, allowing the cello to sore as it crosses the border from minor to major. Both as the closing title track and album as a whole, Heliopause crosses these physical and invisible borders throughout, sending the cello as a typically classical instrument to exciting new and uncharted territory

Obviously, being a solo record rather than a collaboration, the focus is entirely on Müller here, and she manages to pull off a stunning set of atmospheric ambient chamber classical and swimming minimalist brilliance. Gorgeous.

‘Inflatable Gravestone’ is the debut album by Mun Sing (aka Giant Swan’s Harry Wright). The motivating force of the album is the sudden loss of Harry’s father in 2020. Their father struggled with substance addiction and the album explores ideas of 'spirituality' and the ‘higher self’ in relation to addiction and its parallels with the coping mechanisms of grief. It also aims to highlight the importance of humour and distraction when coping with loss.

Serving as a narrative for their own experiences, the album is largely built around club-centred tracks (such as ‘Spider’ and ’Squabble’) broken up by moments of yearning and reflection in tracks like ’The Poison Garden’ and ‘Helhest (Azrael Smirks)’ and moments of dark anguish like 'Inheritor' with its heavy slab-like chords and pensive piano. Flirting with awkward and suggestive rhythms, Wright deliberately suspends moments of resolution and groove in favour of drama and jerky, unexpected cartoonish humour, taking as much influence from the likes of the Art Of Noise as Kyary Pamyu Pamyu.

Wright rewards the listener with moments of clarity and introspection like flags on the journey, recruiting vocalist MX World to deliver lyrics and melodic ideas created by them and their father. Their father’s journals in rehab helped inform most of the lyrics. Some take whole sentences as a way to physically ‘give life’ to his words for the first time. The lyrics describe feelings, revelations and apocalyptic hallucinations. MX World's clear, direct tone suggests folk music and the timelessness of the human condition. The album concludes with the title track ‘Inflatable Gravestone’ which features a chorus of giddy manipulated laughter from Wright’s friends and family to a truly maddening effect. This is then resolved by bright and clear piano chords and the sound of Wright’s father breathing in his sleep. A deeply affecting and personal record with corkscrew twists and turns and a healthy dose of absurdism.

”Minimum Resistance” is Jonas Munk's most abstract and minimalist album to date. Ten ambient pieces based on guitars – often processed into soft, slow billows of sound. There's a rare aesthetic clarity in these pieces, allowing each sonic component to breathe and resonate. Here Munk works with a restrained sonic palette and it's an album which demands patience from the listener. Yet, in its bold simplicity, it carries enough emotional weight to be deeply rewarding. It's an immersive album, an invitation for the listener to sink deep into a series of mesmerizing, but peculiarly undefined, moods. ”Minimum Resistance” celebrates slowness, reclusiveness and simplicity.

There's hardly anything groundbreaking about this kind of music, but rarely does it flow as naturally and effortless as on this set. It's clear this is the work of someone who has been refining his craft over the course of two decades. Besides producing his own music, Jonas Munk also works as a recording and mastering engineer, and has slowly but surely established his own sonic signature. It's the kind of work where subtle gradual changes and miniscule textural details has a tremendous impact on the listener.

Gomma now is sleeping and since Mathias Munk Modica started the Toy Tonics label with his friends Manu Kim & Mo Butschek he hasn't released many things under that name. Instead has been playing keyboards, bass and drums on many tracks of other artists on the TT label. And of course has been building up the TT imprint from his new home in Berlin. Now it's summer and it felt right to put out a few balearic remixes reworks of Munk tracks. Beach party and daytime disco vibe. So here u get reworks of Munk's friends Severino from Horse Meat Disco, Lauer, and Kai Alce from Detroit. Right for this summer.

Heartless Fools is a collection of works exploring multiplicity and often contradictory ideas. Supported by a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, many of the works were realized and recorded in January 2018 at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavík, Iceland. Since these initial recordings, the music has grown through far-reaching collaborations with musicians in the worlds of jazz, classical, and pop. Album credits include experimental pop trio Square Peg Round Hole, vocalists Isaiah Robinson and Hanna Benn, and Icelandic cellist Þórdís Gerður Jóns-dóttir.

While the music itself is not intended to be political, the title Heartless Fools refers to the response of two characters to the current political landscape. The first is working through shock and grief as they awake to the realities of this world, and is trying to make sense of it all. The other, fueled by an imagined loss of cultural identity, is full of a rage that causes them to do inhumane things. This shows up in the music as a struggle between order and chaos, contemplation and impatience. The works constantly push in pull, both internally and with one another.

Made up of six massive instrumental compositions inspired by his new-found love of astronomy, this is without doubt Fernando Corona's best work yet. The set was composed almost entirely from recordings of classical instruments, a process which Corona describes as 'expanding the possibilities of acoustic instruments through electronics'. A move away from the glitch sound he helped to pioneer, "Cosmos" will appeal as much to fans of contemporary composition and artists such as Earth, Sunn O))), KTL or Bohren as it would to lovers of Brian Eno's ambient album series. Definitely one to appreciate on a proper stereo with the volume right up!
