Krafty Kuts and DJ Robert Smith have teamed up to highlight the skills they are best at. Krafty Kuts is known for his unique beats from Hip Hop to Ghetto Funk. DJ Robert Smith on the other hand is famous for his scratches and turntable work. After Krafty passed on a few beats to DJRS about 2 years ago, Smith quickly realized that he wanted to create an EP from these beats with the help of his worldwide connections. The first song to receive rap vocals was "Here I Come" ft. Wildelux, who delivered in no time. The vision was strengthened and more feature requests followed: Supastition, 1773, BambuDeAsiatic and Slimkid3 who took Moonbeam Kelly on board. Within a very short time a masterpiece of first-class artists was created. The "Krafty Smith EP"!

Don´t Stop featuring 1773 & Katjuscha 1773 are Wisdm Uno & Jay Nagoma from Chicago. They have worked together with Ohmega Watts, Othello & Bombeardo and among others. Katjuscha is a friend of DJ Robert Smith circle of friends. She is an absolute singing talent with an incredibly insane ability to perform live on stage. What a voice!

This Fear featuring Slimkid3 & Moonbeam Kelly:
I think we don´t need to announce Slimkid3 of the legendary group The Pharcyde. He is the living legend and voice of 1,2 many Pharcyde songs we all can sing along. His songs in collaboration with DJ Nu-Mark, such as "I know, didn't I feat. Darondo" are world famous. "This Fear" wouldn't be a masterpiece without the incredible voice of Moonbeam Kelly, who was brought to this song via Slimkid. She is an outstanding singer with gangster and soul appeal. It's simply beautiful to listen to her voice.

Peggy Gou

Moment EP - Repress

International house sensation Peggy Gou launches her own Gudu Records with the "Moment" EP, a killer double header of dance floor majesty, informed by 30 years of club music and transformed into something all of her own.
The A-side kicks off with "Starry Night" (surely the only Radio 1 daytime play in history with a Korean vocal?) a beautiful fusion of emotional SAE melodies and proto house elements. The pinging bassline and punchy piano could come straight from a Prelude classic, while the sweet synth strings are totally AZN, providing an infectious and energetic backdrop for Peggy's fierce vocal. Top. On the flip "Han Pan" hits us with glassy / metallic synth melodies, a stepping rhythm and hints of island life in the lead line, once again topped by a choice vocal from Peggy. Timeless, anthemic and totally irresistible, this is another essential release from the latest house superstar.

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: How does she do it? Peggy Gou distils Prelude boogie, proto house and bubblegum style groove into a glorious two track 12" on her new Gudu Records. Featuring her bilingual vocals once again, along with a perfect combination of bump and melody. A true summer anthem!

Reykjavík’s finest export Intr0beatz is back on the SB label with 5 expertly crafted tracks for the heads that like it deep & bouncy. He’s back slicing and dicing samples over his trademark swung out rhythms like never before.

‘Concentrate’ is a dusty & nostalgic Deep House jam, with its MPC’d piano chords, swinging hats and vintage hip hop style hooks. ‘Homage’ is a soothing slab of House with slow filtering chords, crisp hats, deep subby bass & ethereal pads. ‘Use What You Got’ is a lesson in doing just that, doing what he knows best, how he knows best. Raw, bumpin’ rhythms back up crystalline synths that sparkle over cavernous bass. ‘Don’t U Ever’ takes a deeper dive with it’s low-passed lead humming along over phasing hats, chunky kicks and chopped vocals calling back to the days of Max Graef and Money $ex. Finishing up the EP is the sexiest cut ‘Line’ with chopped soul vocals echoing over deeply filtered chords and bass synth accents.

With the Fókus EP, Intr0beatz displays his deft touch and restraint as a producer to lock in a groove, craft a vibe and create an atmosphere that few can rival.

Rhythm Foundation

Let The Whole World Know - 30th Anniversary EP Part 1

Rhythm Foundation was the duo of James Lightbown & Peter Oldroyd, responsible for just one firecracker of piano house power in 1991. "Let The Whole World Know" was released on the Eastern Bloc-related M.O.S Records and became a big spin for one world leading DJ at the time - Sasha.
Just w
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of this monumental record, Salford City Records have released an EP package with four fresh remixes of the track. Opening with the Rhythm Foundation vocal mix which is as true to the original vibe as you're gonna get. That epic vocal line soaring over vamping piano lines and the occassional 'woooo' to devastating effect.

Rob Tissera & Steve Luigi contribute an electrified and highly kinetic offering which places it alongside the proto-proggy sounds that would begin to be hammered by the likes of Sasha and Digweed and soundtrack wild nights at Shelly's.

On side B, Andy Cain perfectly bridges the gap between the original piano house sound and what would later become trance, injecting 16-bar drum rolls, rising strings and hands-aloft energy into proceedings.

Stu Chapman drops a tastefully executed breakbeat refix, juxtaposing those happy piano chords and jubulent strings with odd blasts of rave stab tension and hardcore bass.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Just when you thought you'd heard the last of Salford City Records they finish the year off with an exceptional set of (new?) remixes of the '91 piano house anthem "Let The Whole World Know".

Three tracks that were included as bonus tracks on the Gherkin Jerks compilation CD from a few years ago are now up for their release on vinyl. All originate from the same Gherkin sessions as Mr. Heard's two outstanding late 80's EP's but were never released as such. The moniker showed a different side to his sonic pallet, and would innovate the acid sound to great FX, influencing a great many of artists in the decades that followed. “Psychotic Fantasy” eventually made its way to the “Dance 2000 Pt. 2” album, while the original full take of “Ecstasy” and “Reznaytor” never saw the light of the day. Now for the first time on wax and still sounding as futuristic as ever!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: House artists don't come much more revered than Larry Heard and his Gherkin Jerks alias, responsible for a very modest but highly coveted set of releases at the end of the 80s. To think "Reznayor" and "Ecstasy" have, essentially, remained on the studio floor for the last 30 years is astonishing. "Psychotic Fantasy" also sees a much needed vinyl repress.

Stereo:type presents its first vinyl release from UK producer Risk Assessment, already known for notable releases on Glitterbox, No Fuss, Midnight Riot and Tinted to name but a few. With four original tracks all ploughing the rich furrow of 80s nu disco vibe that he's been championing of late, with 'Baby Call Me' a glitzy, glitterballl-teasing vocal track with a slice of Cameo-style funk thrown in for good measure leading the charge. 'Can You Dig It?' is loopier and more 'track'-orientated, essential DJ material, while the B-side boasts the filtered, soul-inflected house of 'Want You Back' and the glorious Barry White-esque tones of disco monster 'Dancin' In My Eyes'. Huge on all counts.

Reissue number seven for Heels & Souls Recordings sees them look back to the sounds of South Africa’s townships in 1991, cherry picking four of Tashif Kente’s finest cuts from his sought after album A Boy And A Dream, giving them space to breathe on a 12" pressing.

Clearly influenced by the flavours bubbling over from the UK and US in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, from R&B through to boogie, proto house to new jack swing, Tashif’s productions are a melting pot of ideas and influences, laced with a distinctive South African flavour.

Born in Soweto, Mzwandile ‘Tashif’ Kente, cut his teeth with Harari for a brief period, a group that birthed greats like Condry Ziqubu, Sipho Mabuse and Alec Khaoli, before going solo in 1984 and releasing just one album as Tashif Kente, 1991’s ‘A Boy And A Dream’. An album that speaks of love, lust and longing, produced by Kente and Selwyn Shandel with Marc Rantseli also joining the fold, it has that signature South African synth bass, drum machine and killer keyboard combo of the Bubblegum and Kwaito scenes, topped with Kente’s buttery vocals.

Heels & Souls Recordings take four favourites from the LP and press them loud on either side of a 12”. On the A, the audacious new jack, dancefloor bubbler ‘Tell Him I Became Your Lover’ leads into the lovestruck, boogie-tinged grooves of ‘Somebody’s Got My Love’. Flip it over to find a jealousy jam of the highest order with the synthy soul number ‘Who’s That Boy’, before ‘I Like The Way You Love Me’, a lights down low, R&B flavoured lovesong rounds off the EP.

Licensed from Gallo, who transferred the original ¼ inch tapes for their archives, Heels & Souls have enlisted the expertise of Justin Drake to remaster these South African beauties for a new generation of listeners.

Hidden Spheres supplying the fruits once again. More tried and tested club material from the Fruit Merchant main man. Love Hate EP is a tale of two sides.

On Side A Hidden Spheres proves there’s no messin’ with ‘Step to me’ & ‘Don’t Front. Flipping over to the B we see that he’s really just a lover at heart, not a hatter, with the swung out sounds of ‘LUVR MAN’ and the deep sleaze of ‘SO SXY’..

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Shop favourite and all-round good egg 'Spheres presents another deep suite of jagged dancefloor melodies and rich, syncopated FM hits. Tom's instantly recognisable style and angular swagger shine through on these tracks, but with a step towards the more wonky side of house. Another classic and impeccable sonic fusion from Hidden Spheres.

Jerome Hill returns with his 5th full EP on the label to warm you up for winter and it’s maybe stylistically, his widest offering yet.

A joyous mash of influences collide and Hill spits them out of the blender with some typically unexpected curveballs.

From the strikingly moody break beat acid of "The Warning", to the 8 minute long extended disco workout of "Harlseden Shuffle". Then on the flip side, a reliably gnarly wedge of technoey acid house in "Combustion Zone’ and the EP culminates with a tip of the hat to mid nineties House with the rumbling bass and catchy percussion of ‘House Thing’.

Its obvious Jerome’s having fun with this EP and hopefully you will too !

Another retrotastic trip on the waltzers, raves and adult playgrounds of yesteryear as Salford City Records continue to mine that e-soaked period of hedonism from '92 - '97.

Though sounding familiar to that era, this new 12" from DJ Neli is actually a new release from a new producer addicted to the sugar rushed pianos and soaring strings of rave's halcyon times.

In original form "Sweet Life" is a high-nrg blast of fairground house. With nods to handbag in its feel-good vocal and eurodans bass. The Dream Frequency remix is littered with vamping piano lines, deep Juno b-line and strings that put a rocket up your arse. Seriously, if you've not a smile as wide as the warehouse after side A then I fear you may be beyond help.

Onto side B and Stu Chapman ramps up the energy levels till we're almost verging on happy hardcore. Hyped up breaks, buzzsaw leads, pitched up vox - it's almost totally bOnKeRs! But defo still nodding to that classic Bowlers / Dreamscape / Maximes tape packs of the mid 90s.

Finally, SCR regular DJ Welly concludes the set with an M1-guided, proggy refix that slows down proceedings to a Digweed / Sasha-esque chug, complicates the arrangement with some (dare-I-say-it) more sophisticated elements and smothers the vocal in sfx and reverb.

Another winner from the crew! Limited copies...

STAFF COMMENTS

Martin says: Salford City Records sees out the end of 2023 with a brand new track from resident DJ Neli who, sticking to the remit of the label: revisits the waltzers, raves and adult playgrounds of yesteryear with another e-soaked offering of pianos, strings and overactive handclaps.

    Sparky Deathcap

    Tear Jerky EP

Sparky Deathcap AKA Los Campesinos! multi-instrumentalist R N Taylor is the first to admit he’s an unlikely candidate for viral stardom. And yet, almost 15 years on from his final EP, Taylor’s alt-folk solo project is now getting a much-deserved reappraisal, entrancing a whole new generation of listeners. Championed by prominent Twitch streamer/YouTuber Wilbur Soot, his beautifully bruised pocket symphony ‘September’ has racked up over 36m streams on Spotify and soundtracked more than 750,000 creations on TikTok. Now, Los Campesinos!’s own indie imprint Heart Swells are delighted to release a newly mixed edition of its parent EP, Tear Jerky. Musically, you can trace the influence of Phil Elverum’s Microphones, of Magnolia Electric Co and Sufjan Stevens, and of Ys-era Joanna Newsom. From the beautifully lo-fi baroque-pop of ‘Glasgow Is A Punk Rock Town’ to ‘Send It To Oslo’s’ maximalist mix of analogue sounds, these ambitious yet intimate compositions prove the perfect foil for deeply autobiographical tales of heartbreak and recovery.

Alongside an absolutely crucial reissue of Moodymann's remix of "Another Night", Larry Heard's Alleviated Records come through with a brand new release courtesy of Piccolo JT & Rio Love.

Piccolo Jt gets things underway with "1969", a beautifully airy deep house stroller with a spoken word sample reminiscing about early black music parties and delicate conga patterns a la the Alleviated standard. "Juke Joints Liquor Houses" follows suit with equally sumptuous, open air deep house vibrations narrated by another commentary on black music and society from back in the day.

Rio Love takes over the reins on side B, "My Country" pairing mechanized electronics and a stripped back rhythm to a politically charged speech on power struggles and economic / race divisions in society. Finally, "I'm Not Tough But Im Tired" sees a weighty house throb decorated with melodica and gentle piano chords for a moment of deep house, plasma pool bliss - the likes of which is almost synonymous with Larry Heard's Alleviated imprint.

These two new signings ensure Alleviated is still at the top of the deep house pyramid after over 30 years! Don't sleep...

      STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Amazing new vibes from Larry Heard's Alleviated camp. Piccolo JT delivering pure deepness, up there with some of the best on the label. The spoken word snippets really elevate it - a feast for the mind and body. Can't get enough of this...

Underground house and disco maestro Mark E makes a welcome return to Delusions Of Grandeur following hot on the heels of last year’s “Leaning Into The Light EP”. The revered producer has been steadily doing his thing for almost two decades now, racking up releases on Running Back, Golf Channel and Spectral Sound to name just a few. His sound is a unique, sublime vision of US deep house which transcends the dancefloor and he proves his salt once again on the four new tracks that make up this stunning EP.

Title track “Enchantment Under The Sea” sets the mood with a minimal, low slung drum machine groove laying the foundation for layers of Rhodes and synth chords conjuring up images of a sub-aquatic vision of depth and beauty. Up next we have “Zone Tonight”, the epitome of a late night city scape driving track utilizing heavily saturated drums, subtle acid line, distant piano melody and moody Detroit pads to draw you into its deep confines.

Flipping over we have “Vertigo” which treads a similar sonic path as Mark effortlessly fuses rich harmonies and entrancing melodies, inviting listeners to lose themselves in its depths. Closing out this blissful journey we have “Bodymap” which drops the BPM a little more with simple understated drums, melancholic string line and pulsating bassline.

The “Zone Tonight EP” is a testament to Mark E's unparalleled prowess in crafting immersive, uncompromising and emotive soundscapes for your aural pleasure.

      Speedy Wunderground - SXSW EP

As part of Speedy Wunderground's 10th anniversary year, the label releases this limited edition 12” vinyl - the SXSW EP - a three song EP (with a vinyl-only Savage Gary fourth bonus track) recorded by Carey on the ground in Austin at 512 Studios.

        Who is on the EP?

The EP features contributions from Enumclaw, Revival Season and alexalone.

Enumclaw are an already much-tipped American indie-rock band from Washington DC. They're signed to Luminelle, a Fat Possum imprint, and have recently wowed UK crowds with sets at Wide Awake and with a headline performance at Moth Club.

Revival Season is a collaborative hip-hop duo featuring rapper Brandon 'Bez' Evans and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jonah Swilley and signed to Heavenly Records, the revered independent label who helped Speedy Wunderground find their feet when they first started. The duo performed an incendiary live set at Speedy’s SXSW showcase at Sellers Underground performing alongside The Lounge Society, Heartworms, Miss Tiny (featuring label boss Carey himself), Warmduscher and Been Stellar.

alexalone are an experimental noise-rock trio local to Austin itself, signed to the much-loved US label Polyvinyl, whose debut album ALEXALONEWORLD saw the group pick up significant praise from the likes of The FADER, Stereogum, Paste and more. "Unpacking My Feelings" is the band's first release since last year's cover of "Rainbow" by Japanese doom titans Boris.

The 12” vinyl version also contains a fourth vinyl-only bonus track, Savage Gary (Dan Carey)’s ‘The Grackle’.

How did the EP come about?

Ahead of a planned trip to the US for this year's festival, Dan Carey and Pierre Hall from the label approached a number of artists they admired playing there, asking if they might be interested in recording something for Speedy while they were all in the same place. Progress was made, management conferred, dates lined up, Enumclaw and Revival Season confirmed to put sounds down but - as always with Speedy - there's room for spontaneity.

On the evening of their arrival Carey and Hall, who at this point were some distance from central Austin and the festival itself, heard loud music coming from inside a barn, down a beaten track, on their walk back to their Airbnb. The natural conclusion was to investigate and see who could be making it - so, still holding the plastic bags full of beer and milk they had been transporting back to their digs, they entered and watched said noise-makers.

Following a short conversation later that evening, their prized barn discovery, alexalone, were the next band confirmed to record for them on that trip, heading into the makeshift Speedy studio with Carey a couple of days later.

Pierre Hall had the following to say about the SXSW EP:

"It was so good to be able to spread our wings and take Speedy transatlantic. And obviously as soon as we found out we were going to Austin we immediately started looking at studios. Some of these were actually recorded even quicker than the usual ones in London – often two in one day rather than one. So here we are, still breaking our own records, ten years on.

There’s definitely a distinct difference in the sound of these but despite the strange surroundings and lack of regular equipment it’s clear they are unequivocally Dan, and quintessentially Speedy.

You can take the boy out of Streatham…"

        STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Serendipitous meetings deserve to be taken advantage off... when Speedy Wunderground's Dan Carey noticed four of his favourite bands would be in Austin for SXSW he took the opportunity to blag them for a session! Gotta say, the results speak for themself...

        Deary

        Deary EP

The eponymous debut EP by London-based dreampop duo deary on Sonic Cathedral. The six-track release is available on frosted clear 12” viny and on CD (with five additional bonus tracks and remixes).

Their debut single ‘Fairground’, which came out at the end of January, was an instant classic. A mix of shoegaze beauty and trip-hop beats, it was amazing to see people falling in love with it in real time as it gained airplay around the world, a remix by Saint Etienne and hit number one on the Official Charts’ vinyl singles chart.

The EP includes the follow-up, the deliciously dark ‘Beauty In All Blue Satin’, and new single ‘Sleepsong’, plus three other tracks, and follows their support slot with Slowdive at the Troxy in London.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Deary mixes the drifting shoegazey heft of Ride with crisp trip-hop percussion, hypnotic bass plucks and dreamy pop vocals, resulting in a hazy fever dream of an EP, and a perfect release for the brilliant Sonic Cathedral.

Highly anticipated by us here and most of Manchester's clued-up music lovers, Antony Szmierek's first vinyl release arrives amongst a hype-storm of sold out (and upgraded) gigs, a celebrated Jools Holland appearance and a steadily growing but already die-hard fan base. For those that need an intro: Antony Szmierek is a modern wordsmith who sets his insightful observations to electronic-y music styles - garage, hip-hop, house, downbeat etc. Lazy (but justified) comparisons could be drawn with The Streets and more recently, Real Lies; but of course Szmierek offers up his own Mancunian slant - both in dialect and lyrical content. Hidden amongst the positive but resigned melancholy (you'll understand when you hear it) are little easter eggs for people who've grown up around the city and its suburbs.

After wooing us with a smattering of bandcamp digital tracks, this is his first vinyl release to date! It is limited to 500 copies on green vinyl. Five tracks of modern & sincere commentary on life and love articulated through a unique viewpoint and set to some of the juiciest instrumentals we've heard all year.

DJ Sneak started releasing music around 30 years ago, whilst Hard Times was also knocking out records at the same time from the likes of Masters At Work, Todd Terry and Roger Sanchez. Sneak has played for the legendary club night many times, but this is his first outing on the label. Sneak delivers 4 peak time classic cuts reminiscent of his early work, which fits in perfectly with the equally longstanding Hard Times label. Wild and wriggly house music and it's best! Don't sleep...

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Second-wave Chicago house legend DJ Sneak returns with TWO new twelves this week, one on Kaoz Theory and this one, on Hard Times. He ain't changed the formula, just refined it over time, meaning these four tracks are as seductively grooving as some of his finest tracks. Concentric house music at its best. Check!

Back digging in their prized vaults, Kaoz Theory cherry pick another two classics to be released for the first time on vinyl. Up first, one of Toronto’s finest Demuir enlists the signature soulfulness of Bluey Robinson for a bumping RnB-tinged, hazy house bomb entitled ‘Lusting U’. On the flip, Chicago legend DJ Sneak hits with a underground jackin’ groover ‘Judy Russell’ in trademark Windy City style.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Kaoz Theory cross the streams of Toronto and Chicago with a double header of soulful house goodness that's sure to please. It's also the second outing this week from DJ Sneak who returns to the floor in fine form.

John Devecchis AKA The Owl takes flight once again here on his self titled label's 10th outing. Once again it is a head turning mix of disco and funk that carries on where his superb Concrete Funk album from 2021 left off. These are beefy cuts with authentic grooves, starting with the loose limbed playfulness of 'Shake It'. There is a more heavy, purposeful chug to 'Follow Me' which comes alive with lush strings and perfect soul vocals. 'Always Be There' leans into a house groove with noodling guitar riffs a la Chic and 'The Way' is a nice leggy and elastic pumper with expressive diva wails. Super stuff.

Toy Tonics welcome one of the US’ absolute legends in the game on their roster - Kai Alcé! One of the original masters of jazzy house, Kai is a prime example, someone who witnessed the genesis of Detroit’s electronic musical landscape and strives to keep that spirit alive. Being of Haitian descent laid the foundation for his musical ear starting with his childhood in Queens, New York. Some of his earliest musical influences included his mother’s penchant for soca music and the distinct Caribbean rhythms of his culture. An appreciation of jazz would be further guided by his father’s expanding audiophile home system. During the 1970s the kindling of hip-hop and the heyday of disco perked the ear of a young Kai while they were living in NYC. The Big Apple would remain a constant throughout his musical journey as the years went on, but it was the move to Michigan that ultimately shaped his artistic vision.

On this 5 track EP Kai once again makes it all feel so easy! Deeply musical, yet also instantly effective on the dancefloor, tracks like "New Life Livin" and "Slide It In" come with an ease that shows why he’s shaped the game for decades.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Toy Tonics continues its unrelenting dominance of new disco and deep house with the utter legend that is Kai Alce signing five tracks for the label. Silky smooth with an impeccably constructed palette, these are high end, late night burners that'll transport you to basements, a red light and a feeling!

IG Culture returns as Likwid Continual Space Motion with four fresh tracks for intergalactic space jazz battles. "The Remedy" opens proceedings with urgent horns and perfectly balanced moments of tension and release - the saxophone lines breaking through the taut strings beautifully. High tech jazz of the highest order.

"Vanguard", featuring Tyrone Stuart sounds like Ras G meets the current London underground - think Ezra Collective, Yussef Kamaal etc; with that poignant hip-hop edge. "The Score" is a highly frenetic, free piece of modern bop with rich double bass and occasional scats for added authenticity. Finally "Givin' Up" concludes with a definite lean towards UKG and broken beat styles, taking us full circle back to the right now. An impeccably well executed EP that shows that UK jazz is in as healthy and inventive state as ever. Recommended.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Specialist tackle from IG Culture with a great take on modern jazz mixed with broken beats and with a real London flavour throughout. Giles Peterson gotta be all over this?!

Heads High keeps up the good early work with a third interesting offering, this time in the form of a meeting of the fiendish minds of Mike Misiu and Eddie Smilie, aka Wednesday Club. They offer up late-night club sounds with plenty of musical nouse and worldly nuance that comes as a result of late-night sample mining across the African musical landscape. Their tunes are crafted on nice analogue gear so have that lovely freed edge feel and from the space-house of 'Magic Body' to the swaggering dub of 'Magic Dub' via the cosmic expressiveness of cruising groover 'Love & Care'. This one gets dubbed out to close a fine dancefloor adventure.

Accomplished UK mainstay J1Mi launches the long awaited Beyonders label with a fantastic first EP that captures the eclectic nature of his sound.

J1mi aka James Hadfield has been making all manner of sounds for years - both solo and as one half of Lizards - from house to disco, Balearic to techno, and always on revered labels like MeMeMe, Not An Animal, Leng, Futureboogie and Phonica. He is part of the Beyonders collective that was started by Jason and Mark Goodings of 90’s pioneering breaks and drum and bass duo Hidden Agenda. The collective is now back after a hiatus following Mark's tragic passing in 2016 and is as fruitful as ever with members including James as well as Mal Sharp and Nick Grimes and now a new label.

James continues to host Beyonders Present events in his hometown of Newcastle and has played at the likes of Glastonbury, Stowaway and Pikes this year, as well as across Europe in the past. Luke Una and Man Power are big supporters of his work and this is the first EP from the collective and label, with the following four all mastered and ready to go over the next year.

The brilliant 'Sixes Now' has a menacing synth screwing about the mix before percussive grooves and elastic bass arrive to lock you into a dark disco groove full of menace and suspense. The thumping 'Modern Maze' is another hugely inventive sound with rickety rhythms, erotic vocal coos and wiry synths. A bewitching breakdown brings acoustic guitars and places the vocal front and centre before the punchy house kicks come back once more. 'Desire' featuring Crazy P vocalist Danielle Moore is an indie disco cut with jazzy chords and playful funk riffs that lift the spirits and cruise on smooth grooves. Closer 'Japanese Kipling' is a prickly brew with off-grid hots and vocal sounds, distant hits of melody and dubby rhythms that are wonderfully intoxicating.

This standout first EP very much sets the scene for what is sure to be a crucial UK artist.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Second release from James Hadfield's J1mi project. Having been involved in everything from Balearic to liquid DnB the sonics and rhythmic prowess on display here are nothing short of spectacular.

Back in the news after being featured on the Grammy winning Alien Superstar from Beyonce’s latest album - but for those that know - he has never gone away as he is always on someone’s dance floor.

Foremost Poets productions and his vocals are simply devastating and label head, Ross Allen, has been a fan since he first heard the Nu Groove classic ‘Reason’s to Be Dismal’ on the reworked Richard Long Edition. It was a record that blew him away then and now, recently played by Pete Tong on Radio One, with Sven Vath including it on his anniversary compilation too. Ross signed this record when he hooked up with Johnny in New York 3 years, but wanted to wait until the time was right. That time is now.

‘Flowers In the Attic’ is no normal dance record, clocking in at thirteen minutes. It’s an epic Johnny D production, falling into that place where funk and house come together in the most magical, danceable way. It’s long but enticing, taking you through different phases and surprises you as it sucks you in, twists you up, and pulls you out.

‘Escape From Dubai’ is almost trance like but with that New York lean that keeps it very much on the right side of the Foundation Music fence. Full of funk, it has a deepness that builds and swells into an epic journey that takes you to another dimension.

The broken beat of ‘Don’t Shut Your Eyes’ closes out and is another piece of New York/ New Jersey up-tempo funk, syncopated and grooving with a repetitive hook, that goes deep via its Hammond organ solo and jazzy vocal.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Phwwwooar this'll get lads and lasses of a certain age and persuasion wetting their pants in excitement. Real deal Detroit techno stylings from DJ-3000 who lands somewhere between Juan Atkins, Claude Young and Carl Craig with his rich, analogue sound. Unbelievably solid EP that'll sound at home in small backrooms as it will in dock-off aircraft hangers. You need!

            Snail Mail

            Valentine Demos EP

Marking the two year anniversary of the release of her critically acclaimed album ‘Valentine’, Snail Mail (Lindsey Jordan) will put out ‘Valentine Demos’ EP. Consisting of four early stripped-down recordings of songs from the 2021 album including the previously shared “Adore You” (a working title for “Valentine”), it also features previously unreleased song “Easy Thing”.

Jordan says: “Without further ado, here are the demo versions of some of the songs that would become integral to the making of Valentine. A little over three years ago, holed up at my parents’ house in Maryland, with just a minilogue synth, an interface, a mic, and a guitar, I started working on writing my second full length record. I prefer some of the demos to what actually came out on the record because of how intimate and solitary the process was. You can kind of hear me crying in one of them. Maybe two actually haha.”

Born and raised in New Jersey, Ardio Zemog delivers the goods for the next Obia Records release. Soulful harmonic percussion filled tracks with a whiff of Latin. Passed on from generation to generation people inherit their ancestral spirits and devotional practices to create vibrations that lift our souls. Ardio Zemog takes on the skin of Obiaman for a sonic trip through connected spirits both young and old. The main cut “Generations” takes the dancer and listener on a wholesome state of well-being. Soothing percussion rhythms with a solid signature bassline drives the listener into a never ending feeling of bliss, the youngest generation has spoken.

Followed by “Yeochu” a deeper more mature arrangement of drums characterizes the unseen spirit from the father figure. A message of analogue synth stabs and pads deliver a blessing followed by hypnotic piano riffs. Instructions and spiritual advice are given for those who are able to open up.

“Nights in Leblon” behold the oldest wisest spirit of them all. A breathtaking deep harmonic pad layered by countless drum percussion. The presence of ever evolving synth stabs and piano chords define the tracks rhythm and timbre.
To finish the EP Wendel Sield takes us on a completely different ancestral path. Flipping the script on “Nights in Leblon Acidic Rework” with a solid tb-303 acid line layered with tr-505 drums. The rework focuses on playful rhythm and minimal usage of elements. Surprisingly the record takes on a different harmony mid tune what makes the track ideal for DJs who like to switch it up during their sets.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Straight up tribal deep house business in a similar vein to Ron Trent or Joe Clausell. "Yeochu" sounds a lot of like Henrik Schwarz's remix of Code 718's "Equinox".

                Oscar Browne

                If Only EP

A founding member of the London based folk-collective Broadside Hacks (amongst other banded-ventures), Oscar Browne's debut solo endeavour 'Never Quite Right' was released in 2022 to critical acclaim; an established inauguration which saw him eventually signing to So Young Records in the spring of 2023.

Following a six-month spree in which Browne found himself tirelessly writing in order to process the changes taking place around him, the five songs which would eventually go on to form his debut EP 'If Only', are a deep- dive into the heart and soul of an artist who masterfully captures all the joys and heartaches of life in your early-twenties.

Recorded over one week at Bristol's The Playpen, home to producer Ali Chant (Aldous Harding, Katy J Pearson), 'If Only' was all-in-all, a long time coming. Selfaccustomed to doubling things up and hiding imperfections, it was through the art of collaboration, and Ali's teachings in the power of emotional transparency that the pairing of Browne and Chant really shined. "Ali was a massive part in keeping the recordings minimal" notes Browne "he kept the rawness".

Oscar Browne's creative- capability is a limitless array of captivating delights. These aren't simply re-interpretations of eras gone by. Browne channels as much Ben Howard or Kurt Vile as he does Nick Drake and John Martyn. Rather, it's through his ear for musical- lucidity, highlighted throughout the course of these selected songs, that enables Browne to transport his love of traditional folk and folklore, into a uniquely contemporary realm. His fearlessness in baring- all to those who'll listen creates an artistic magnitude will only keep growing with fine prowess, as Browne continues to cut his teeth as a beguiling 'one to watch'.

                  Owners Club

                  Owners Club EP

Owners Club call themselves a "pub rock four piece" - but they are so much more than that. There's a through line in their taut, visceral guitar sound going from British greats like Roxy Music and Marc Bolan, through The Buzzcocks and The Jam before taking a detour off to NYC and nodding towards The Strokes and The Walkmen. The Dorking-based four piece are a blistering live act, with songs that range from singing about the long discontinued Double Diamond beer to vampires, the occult and an England that feels like a distant memory.

This EP will be the band's debut release on vinyl. Recorded at Small Pond Studios in Brighton in April this year, and produced and mixed by Matt Gleeson of WELLY fame, it presents three songs that brilliantly demonstrate what a ferocious, tightly-wound sound this Dorking four-piece can produce.

The lead single will be Double Diamond - a song that came about after a chance purchase of a Double Diamond-branded ashtray from a car boot sale by Dorking train station. The song is a romantic and messy vision of the life the ashtray’s lived, the pub it came from, the punters who left their fag ends in it and the messy nights and bar fights it’s witnessed. With sprawling synths, punchy guitar lines and tongue-in-cheek lyrics, the song is an anti-advertisement for a drink which no longer exists, as well as a look through rose-tinted beer googles at what Britain's night life - for better or (almost certainly) for worse - was once like. As the advert used to state: you know where you are with Double Diamond. It works wonders.

                    TRACK LISTING

                    A1: Double Diamond
                    A2: Evil Twin
                    B: Village Green

Paolo Mosca makes intricate, multi-layered electronic music. Inspired by the early club sound pushed by the pioneers from his home region Veneto, he fuses house, trance and ambient - and moves forward. The "Metaphysics EP" displays the artist's passion and ingenuity, unfolding technical skill that makes clear his studio clock is set to 2023 and not 1993. On "Lucidreams" a statically charged beat and organ bass work up a groove. Accompanied by a misty pad and a slow, pensive arpeggiator, it pulses towards the break: there an acid line emerges, finds its spot in the mix, and refuels the track. "Energia" draws from a bolder, more euphoric range. Hand drums, a glittering lead and airy yet restrained chords float soaked in reverb and delay. A lean bass sequence tightly keeps the rhythm as flanged claps and subtly positioned sweeps create extra movement. The second side's opener, "Under The Sea" features a formant filter lead meandering within the sweaty framework of heavily gated choir pads and a frugal bassline that eventually gets layered with an M1. Modulated vocals and strokes of additional melody ensure the stereo field again gets used to its full capacity. "Acqua" is a fitting coda. Some familiar patches are deployed over a tumbling beat that takes charge of the pace from the get-go. The palette might seem bright and blissful, but as always, the track's latticework contains enough contrast for a slight feeling of melancholy to keep simmering beneath. Mosca cited his meditation routine, how it helps him materialize ideas and thoughts, as a main drive upon finishing this record. The "Metaphysics EP" is a ruminative work. Comprised of four explorations in deftly manipulating energy with due attention to balance and momentum, it easily flows between genres, details darting in and out, showing the artist's understanding of composition and dance music history. Mixed and mastered beautifully as well. Highly recommended!

Matt says: A favourite on the all-night-chug scene. This proggy-indebted little beauty has become a bit of a secret weapon for one Count Von Delicious who recently wowed the revellers in Berlin's seedier districts with a promo copy of this beast. There's a driving, feminine force throughout which is dreamy and captivating. Defo worth checking if you're working the 'floors at the weekend...

New label debut from Detroit's Tink Thomas (FXHE). Obviously being on Omar S' FXHE label, we expect a certain degree of quality on a show. But if this is what's in store from this producer then we're in for a hell of a ride!

"Mistic Flow" opens the record, a bucking house cut powered by an offbeat reggae sample and with deep set bass. "Lesson 120" is a rattling rhythmic house cut - one of those highly functional records when constructing a long form DJ mix that adveterous DJs are gonna get plenty of milage out of.  "Gonna Make U Dance" has the same concentric energy, but injects a funky bassline and darting string samples into the mix. One to get your spiraling into the speaker stacks with zero abandon!

Nice n cheeky "Bam Bam" mix at the end too via the bumpety "Wat A Bam". Big tip on this one folks!

Matt says: If you've got the warm-up slot, but need to keep the energy levels and BPMS high, then you could go far worse than this record! Perfect for that midnight-2AM slot at TWH, I'm not sure if 'the house warm-up' set exists anymore as DJs and promotors opt for big name insta-influencers dropping 1 hour of festival-bangers!

The 'Labyrinthine EP' opens with a relentless 4 to the floor club ready firestarter. Aptly titled 'Quark' hits the spot in all the right places. Its swinging drum work out and oscillating chords swirl to a frenzy and guarantee to set any a dance floor ablaze.

The A2 'Labyrinthine' boots off with Snad's unique take on UK 90s Tech-House, full groove, snare syncopation and whirlwind of off-centre synth cords, adding to his effervescent sound design.

The flip side opens with a killer remix fellow Berliner expat, Huerta's take on 'Quark'. The remix retains the destructive dance floor potential of the original and adds somewhat in the hypnotic trip out department. Full engagement is guaranteed from start to finish even for the more of an absent-minded listener on this one.

Snad closes the EP with 'Revival'. This cross-genre juggernaut effortlessly marries puncy breaks with dubbed out echos while the resonant synth chords and muddled vocal chops expand listener's perception of sonar possibilities to places few have imagined possible. One of the rare tracks which hovers on the fringe of experimentation but guarantees to move the peak time crowd of the most discerning listening habits.

Matt says: A new record from London's leading house specialists Phonica who seem to be able to hit that sweet spot between underground nous and dancefloor sensibilities. Snad keeps to their remit with three tracks of exceptional tech-house prowess and a cheeky garage-indebted flex at the end.

This four song EP is the perfect showcase of the band’s precious gift of being able to combine Teenage Fanclub style heart-breakingly gorgeous melodies with the crunching guitar assault of Dinosaur Jr. Their instantly recognisable songs have been making audiences fall completely in love with them across the UK and Ireland. In the last few years we’ve seen French DJ and producer Laroye delivering the goods time after time on respected labels such as Atjazz Recordings, Compost, Makin Moves and Foliage. His latest LP just released on Local Talk has been getting big support picking up plays on Radio 1, 6Music, Worldwide FM as well as spins from Natasha Diggs, Gilles Peterson, Craig Charles, Louie Vega, Honey Dijon to name a few. Freerange now welcome him back for the follow up to 2020’s release "Be The Change", presenting you with a killer 4 track EP entitled "Uku Dance".

Leading the charge, Laroye is joined by influential Detroit artist, DJ, producer and vocalist Javonntte who has written and recorded a brilliant vocal for a track entitled "First Sight". Laroye’s fat beats, jazzy chords and soulful touch make the perfect production for Javonntte’s vocals.

Up next we have the Percussive Dub mix of Uku Dance in which Laroye strips things back to the bare bones making for a serious percussion tool work out to spice up your sets.

On "Uku Dance" a bass-heavy groove is punctuated with vocal chops and deep Rhodes part which adds a moody, late night touch. Just the kind of soulful, dubby, afro track that will get the house dancers throwing down like their lives depended on it! Closing out the release you’ll find an instrumental version of "First Sight".

                        A Certain Ratio

                        2023 EP

Manchester legends, A Certain Ratio, are back with their brand new 2023 EP on limited edition 12” vinyl.

This follows the release of their album 1982, and includes 3 remixes of tracks from the record and a brand new track ‘Day by Day’. The remixers on the EP are fellow mancunians Werkha and Jade Parker, as well as close friend Andy Meecham aka Emperor Machine, who originally contributed keyboards and electronic percussion to the very track he’s reworked, ‘Constant Curve.’ The EP also includes a remix of the popular single ‘SAMO’, which spent 4 weeks on the BBC 6Music playlist, accompanied by an animated lyric video paying homage to the graffiti tag it was named after by Al Diaz and American artist and wunderkind, Jean-Michel Basquiat. The final track on the EP is a remix of ‘Waiting on a Train’, presenting a new and special version of the original song, with the presence of the featuring artists, Ellen Beth Abdi and Chunky, remaining strong.

Formed in 1978 with a core line-up of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop and Donald Johnson, A Certain Ratio emerged from the hallowed grounds of the late 70s punk scene, and from that day on they’ve moved forwards with gleeful disregard for the boundaries of style and genre, their eye fixed firmly on constant progression.

To celebrate their 45th anniversary and support the release on 2023 EP, ACR will be taking to the road to play a select number of shows in the UK and Europe, which will see them play all of their 45s in chronological order across 2 sets in one evening in venues hand picked by the band all with limited capacity.

Having stepped up to the plate for Will & Ink’s first release in five years with the Cullen EP, Yaleesa Hall follows up with another trademark, brain boggling EP of twisted dancefloor delights.

Forever pushing the envelope, Hall hits with three dynamic cuts that flow from rapid fire, synth heavy techno to glitching, low-end electro and atmospheric electronica.

wAFF makes a triumphant return to Hot Creations after a seven-year hiatus with his three-track, groove-driven ‘Slapfunk EP’.

Since his first outing back in 2012, wAFF has been an integral part of the Hot Creations family, remixing various releases and dropping a total of four EPs - the last being ‘Sick Pleasure’ in 2016, which still stands today as a highlight in the label’s extensive catalogue. Marking a long-awaited return to Jamie Nature imprint over that period further establishing him as a leading name, he arrives fresh from his third Paradise show of the season ready to ignite dancefloors with a trio of irresistible beats on ‘Slapfunk’.

Title track ‘Slapfunk’ opens the release with shifting stabs, warping bass patterns and fizzing lead synths, steadily progressing into a menacing club-focused workout. Continuing his signature style, ‘Questions’ showcases a blend of pulsating beats synchronised with a warped vocal topline that enhances the allure. Finally, ‘Next Game’ delivers a punchy trip loaded with subtle minimal-leaning influences, combining chopped vocal snippets with slick, stripped-back percussion.

The top tier imprint that is Is It Balearic is back with more blissed-out and beach brilliance, this time with a trio of masterpieces from Das Komplex. A whole world of influences are called up on here and then distilled into primo Komplex sounds - opener 'Quest' brings a slick 80s new wave vibe with a ragged guitar riff and splashy hits over heavy drums and under well-treated vocals. It is awash with waves of dance floor warmth, then 'Never Stop' is all shimmering vocals and Japanese house chords over 80s house beats. Emotive and uplifting for sure then ' Dzis' closes out with chugging percussion and strummed acoustic guitars. It's a heart of the dance floor gem full of love and good-time vibes.

This vinyl only label is already hot property and now its 17th release marks another one that is likely to fly off the shelves. Rhythm Plate is in the hot seat with this new EP 'Codependency' featuring remixes from YSE aka Saint Laur'Ant. It's 'Hold On' which is first up and brings lots of lavish disco energy with rich vocals that take you to somewhere like Paradise Garage. The first remix is laden with more effects and more sensuous chord work then 'Why Did You Leave' is a more tropical viber which gets remixed into a fine dub.

Why Did You Leave (YSE Saint Laur'Ant Dub Mix)

Two leading lights of UK house join forces for a special collaboration which delivers every bit as much as you would expect from anything with the Jimpster & Crackazat stamp on. Having been introduced to Crackazat’s vocal and lyric writing on his acclaimed "Evergreen" LP from last year, Jimpster was keen to team up to bring some of that flavour to his own sound. Born out of a desire to stretch outside of their comfort zones, and with a mutual respect for each others productions, the "Natural Child" EP brings us two original vocal tracks and two dub versions covering a spectrum of moods from classic soulful to deep, atmospheric and contemporary house.

Opening track "Natural Child" leads the charge with Crackazat’s trademark jazz-influenced piano part, swirling Moog lines and vocal being complimented with Jimpster’s punchy drums and warm, rounded bassline. The result is a spacious and deceptively simple track which will wrap you up in its warm confines.

Next up we have a completely different take on "Natural Child" which ups the BPM and adds a more live, percussive and rolling vibe which will no doubt get the house dancers throwing down.

"My Harmony" comes next with its slick and soulful sound which draws inspiration from golden era NYC sounds of Blaze and Louie Vega while Nick Cohen’s live bass brings a bounce to the chunky, shuffling house beats.

Closing out the EP we have a dub version of "My Harmony" which loops up the Rhodes part, strips back the groove and adds layers of FX and arpeggiating synths resulting in a heads-down deep and soulful track to warm up the dance floor.

                          Dream EP

In 2022, in their review of the Chloé Robinson and DJ ADHD ‘Steamin’ EP, Resident Advisor predicated that “we'll be hearing from Chloé Robinson for summers to come…” This summer that predication is set to come true as the Pretty Weird label founder, DJ and producer Chloé Robinson once again teams up creative partner and fellow club-sounds tour-de-force DJ ADHD on a collaborative new EP set for release on fabric Original this September.

Individually and together, Chloé Robinson and DJ ADHD are becoming one of the most formidable and creative pairings in the electronic music circuit today.

4 absolutely tearin' Amiga jungle bangers! The packaging alone is worth buying the record for - a retrotastic take on vintage Amiga computer magazines that were rife in the early 90s!

Music-wise expect heavily tiimmeessttrrretched and mangled breaks, growling subs and the odd smattering of hardcore vox twisted to oblivion through the Amiga's infamous sequencing program: Tracker. It's pretty mad to think that the development of jungle was heavily indebted to this piece of software - pretty much the equivalent of when loads of working class Chicago kids discovered the 303 ten years previous. Technology can often inspire and cause serious cultural shifts (just look at the Instagram-centric world we live in today!) but back then, it all seemed so much more creative and revolutionary!

                            STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Real retrotastic jungle business here by Pete Cannon who unashamedly boasts the virtues of the Amiga's Tracker program, pivotal in the development of the genre during its embryonic phase. It's quite astonishing when you consider how limited the system was in terms of processing power, memory etc. A proper blast of innovation that's left a permanent mark on underground dance culture.

Earthly Measures' second vinyl release of the year sees them team up with the talented & mystical producer & multi-instrumentalist Sidirum - bringing you Balearic & Downtempo flavours from Argentina - sounds that haven’t always been associated with his style. An EP that fills you with euphoria & nostalgia, trying to find those sounds that can take you to another time just by listening to them - as he puts it, "rhythms from the past".

For Sidirum this release is about the beauty of chance. Samples that he has found from near & far over many years of producing finally find a home. 'Donde' in particular is a special track, he says "it is the track where I found my voice again. I have not used it in a song for almost 10 years." 'Ex-Plane' is heavily influenced by his love for Reggae, which runs throughout the whole track. 'Total Interior' is a perfect dance-floor ready track - with the help of multi-instrumentalist Pedro Alvide, the track builds a musical progression that dives into perfect sunset vibes with uplifting energy - ready for a peak time festival set.

After a number of other releases, 'Iris' is an EP where Sidirum feels that he has finally found himself again musically. In a way it's a summary of the places he’s been in the past, intertwined with his ideas in the present, making for a truly unique & pleasant listening experience.

After heavy-duty releases on self-administered imprints Low End Activism and Sneaker Social Club, as well as London’s beloved graffiti-laden mutant-bass stronghold Seagrave (RIP), the almighty Low End Activist makes a welcome debut with the ESP Institute. No stranger to mining distant regions the hardcore continuum and the residue of soundsystem culture at large, his relentless traversing and assembling of UK-specific rhythms demonstrates there is no end in sight when it comes to evolving the region’s musical gene pool. The 5-track 'Gossip Is The Devil’s Radio' strings together a smear of dystopian instrumentation - ghostly pads wrapped in melancholy, percussion that marries bleep with low resolution shrapnel, and vocal fragments that resemble a control tower’s two-way radio on the fritz - all imperfectly focused through a damaged lens of dancehall. We’re drawn to a dull moan that pervades throughout the record, reminiscent of the nihilistic moments in Abigail Meade’s score to 'Full Metal Jacket' where the sonics resemble a slow churn of molten steel occasionally punctuated and pierced by crystalline shards. The depth between the bone dry immediate foreground and distant wet background creates an exquisite sense of longing which isn’t inherently dark or menacing, but seductively bleak. As voyeurs, we may certainly appreciate the aesthetic LEA portrays, but we can’t fully comprehend the sense of escapism rooted within this music without having come of age in the damp and restless confines of England on the cusp of Thatcher’s abuse. Its a reminder that the light at the end of a tunnel, while it may be dim and grey, is still a light after-all, and the only way out is through.

Four tracks of esoteric and spatial electronica are served up on Quartz’s debut release for R&S Records.

Via releases for Metalheadz, Rupture London and System Music, amongst others, the ascending producer from Cardiff has impressed with his unique take on drum & bass, and more recently via grime influenced dubstep.

A thrilling hybrid of sounds and rhythms are pulled together on the ‘Deity Spear’ release as Quartz deploys angular breakbeats, gargantuan bass tones, convoluted rhythms, and panoramic sound design across four mesmerising tracks.

The opening track ‘Lilac Cobwebs’ is a reference and homage to his deceased mother, featuring a snippet of one of her last voice notes to him, and a reference to a colour he fondly remembers of her.

A spellbinding and dense release from one of the UK’s most audacious producers.

Cosmoba is a brand new Manchester based imprint from Kalcagni. Fresh from releasing his "Manners" EP on Distrito 91, Kalcagni dishes up 4 slices of funk-fueled electro for this label debut.

Lead track "Lost In The System" features retro stylings and gritty electro bass hooks. This is swiftly followed up by "Multislacking", the result of a weekend spent twisting up a modular rig, with wonky bass squelches and 80s pads underpinned by slamming beats.

On the flip side, "Culture Vulture" introduces some heavy 303 workouts, before "After The Fact" rounds off the EP nicely, taking the acid vibe in a slightly darker direction with wonky Reese synth fills and jacked up breaks.

There's a rich sense of cybernetic atmosphere throughout, with just the right amount of squelch and snap present in Kalcagni's synths and drum machines. The EP is mixed and mastered cohesively; with a dull layer of sonic oxidation giving it a rough but penetrating edge.

RIYL: Ceephax, Roy Of The Ravers, Analord-era AFX, Luke Vibert etc.

Matt says: New local producer from Levenshume debuts on his own label. We're really liking the sound of this - stronger and tougher than 95% of the new electro also-rans; Kalcagni clearly has his collection of machines under control.

                            A1. Lost In The System

                            B1. Culture Vulture
                            B2. After The Fact

Following up on Cosmoba’s debut release. "Lost In The System", label owner Kalcagni returns with another 4 tracker of vibey electro and breaks; setting out his mission statement with a clear intent as he handles his modest array of machines with dexterity and poise.

Kicking off with "Mute Mode", which is perhaps the most anthemic we've heard the producer thus far. Channeling deep house and acid melodics, laced over chunky breaks and a warm analog bass; it has a post-peak afterglow and invigorating energy oft lacking from the electro genre.  "Up Here (In The Head)" follows up with another 303 workout, layered with infectious bass hooks and effected synth trills and driven by a high octane electro groove full of wet splashy snares and skeletal hi-hat rhythms.

On the flip side, "System Addict" ups the BPM’s and flexes a more upfront electro groove, with beefy drums, gnarly stabs and a twisted, resonant bassline that bites at the ankles of the dancefloor. Meanwhile "Worn Out Version" provides a more mellow and alternative vibe to close out the EP, with squelchy modular synth riffs and lush minor chords that recall Radioactive Man's playful mainframe excursions.

Seriously promising stuff from this local producer - don't get left in the void!

Matt says: The second of two EPs introducing a new local talent from Levenshume. Kalcagni's ability to juxtapose deep atmospheres with jarring rhythms and robust productions is beautifully displayed across these four storming electro growlers. Big tip and a producer to keep an eye on.

We've just had a cheeky delivery of this. A mashup classic from 2006: a house mix of "Super Freak" with "Where's Your Head At?"; Gorilaz' "Dirty Harry" with the rap from "The Message" ontop; a headzy remix of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" and a Beatles vs Mary J BLige cut. Phantasea Farm EP

New York City four-piece c*mgirl8 (aka cg8) announce their debut 4AD EP 'Phantasea Pharm'. Made up of Lida Fox (bass), Veronika Vilim (guitar), Chase Lombardo (drums) and Avishag Rodrigues (guitar), phantasea pharm was born out of an obsession with Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Old McDonald’ ahead of a show in Charlottesville, Virginia. The band decided to pay homage. Vilim dressed up in a cow leotard with pig accessories, Lombardo in a g-string and apron that read ‘The Grillfather,’ Rodrigues became a lawn mower, and Fox took on the role of a sexy rooster. “We went on stage that night and told everyone we were a ‘Fantasy Farm.’” They knew then that would become the basis of their new EP.

Last month’s single ‘cicciolina’ was a perfect introduction, a tribute to the Hungarian-Italian pornstar turned politician Ilona Staller, aka Cicciolina. The new single ‘gothgirl1’ opens another chapter. Written with Nick Launay (Kate Bush, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Slits), during the band’s stay at Barbizon, “a magical artist hotel nestled on the edge of a mushroom forest,” the result is a four-minute cut of hypnotizing eroticism that perfectly captures the dark mysticism of its genesis.

phantasea pharm follows last year’s standalone single ‘dumb bitch’ and EP’s c*mgirl8 (2020) and RIPc*mgirl8 (2021), and arrives in the midst of their headlining EU/UK tour and festival run that has seen them play Primavera, The Great Escape, London Calling, and more. c*mgirl8 will then make their return to UK later this Summer joining the line-up for Greenman and Core Festival after having opened for Le Tigre in North America.

Repress of that scene-shattering Jack Pattern 12" from back 2015. Originally released on Lustpoderosa, it was the first record by the producer and kicked off the label in fine style. Containing four tracks brimming with electro-disco, cosmic and Italo influences, it's the opener "Miami Phonecall" particularly that caused a micro-panic amongst collectors and DJs getting on board the Italo resurgence that was (and still is) present in 2015. The other tracks also possess a charismatic red laser elegance which'll have you dishing out the poppers and mithering the lighting engineer for more and more fog as you pull out your finest thrusts through into the morning session. Official reissue from Groovin.

Matt says: Remember when this one dropped on Lustpoderosa some eight years ago? Targeting the ascendency of the Italo resurgence brilliantly, it become a cult artefact of the era. Now Groovin do the right thing and offer up an official licensed reissue for those who missed it first time round. Next up on Co-Accused Records - No Static / Automatic label boss Ara-U is piloting the craft with his "No Future EP". The Venezuelan electro producer provides four analogue cuts accompanied by a Radioactive Man remix.

It's a cosmic liftoff with the mind warping sonic sounds of "Planet Destroy". Radioactive Man's funk-fueled remix has an infectious 303 bassline that takes the listener on a jackin' journey. On the flip side "Exit Now" moves into driving hypnotic synths with sizzling percussion throughout. "No Future" dips the dancefloor into a twisting wormhole of intergalactic grooves. The EP closes with the dark dystopian synths and extraterrestrial layers of "It’s Only Lies Around Me".

                                DJ Koze

                                Wespennest EP

DJ Koze unveils a spiritual and surprising journey into rapturous spheres with "Wespennest EP". The visionary artist and master of electronic sound, presents his first own release after 2018's global club hit "Pick Up".

"Candidasa" and "Wespennest" are the result of DJ Kozes inspiring stay in a secluded Benedictine monastery on the enchanting island of Sulawesi. Amidst this idyllic setting, he found the perfect environment to unleash his musical vision. He composed all of the music of "Candidasa" while lying on his stomach, in an act of deepest devotion and self-reflection. In doing so, he fed exclusively on so-called heroin kebabs to immerse himself in a trance-like state of creative flow. The result is a soundscape of unimagined depth and beauty that enchants the senses and transports listeners to another dimension by massively increasing the frequency of flicker fusion.

On "Wespennest” the wonderful Sophia Kennedy takes the stage and breathes a new dimension into the music with her impactful lyrics and vocals. With generous dedication, Sophia has provided exclusive excerpts of her yet unreleased songs, giving this track a radiant psychedelic power. The combination of DJ Kozes musical genius and Sophia Kennedy's glorious vocals creates a club track full of wonderment, opening up a mystical rapturous world for listeners. Already an instant classic of German dance music.

With "Candidasa" and "Wespennest" DJ Koze has once again pushed the boundaries of electronic sounds and created a spiritual journey that touches the soul and frees the mind. This EP is the first harbinger of his highly anticipated new album, which will be released in 2024. The time until the release can be wonderfully bridged with the magical album "Hit Parade", which DJ Koze has produced for the British legend Róisín Murphy and on which we can be carried away into the world of musical brilliance.

Matt says: A new record from maverick German Stefan Kozalla always causes a bit of a stir round these parts. As wild and as oddball as ever, this double header displays his unique sonic artistry in fine form. Coupled with some inventive song writing to boot. It's another winner from the highly acclaimed producer.

                                Noema

Sky, Horse And Catch EP - Inc. Khidja Remix

Noema's last EP on his own, Magic Movement imprint was an absolute doozy, landing slap bang between shamanic house, cosmic and EBM flavours with a beguiling, mystic palette of sounds. He's back with some more music recorded on a recent trip top Sao Paulo and packing just as much punch as that previous volley. The title track translates a 90's Detroit house groove to the present day and adds cuica, berimbau and several other Brazilian drums on top. Riding the complex groove, you encounter eccentric synths, mysterious soundscapes and of course the horse, on this 11 minute long hack.

"Minhocao" trades the horse for a racing car and takes you on a cruise on the same-named elevated highway that leads through the city of Sao Paulo. Surrounded by driving beats, guitar single-notes, massive synth-bass howls and a gritty Moog theme, this jam is a hell of a joyride!

Khidja strips down the original title track to its core and creates a solely percussive version in a half-time groove. By adding a virtuoso qanon / saz-like sound the tune develops an arabesque flavour with a dubby bass as the cherry on the top.

Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon

                                Kontonbili EP (feat. Wiyaala)

Following on from the successes of their first two LPs, "Kalba" and "Small Small", Isaac Birituro & The Rail Abandon return with the "Kontonbili EP". A collection of seven tracks that trace the traditional West African roots of their sound whilst adding their unique touch, largely courtesy of Isaac's xylophone, Sonny Johns' folky embellishments and the vocal prowess of powerful Ghanaian songstress Wiyaala.

The lead single "Hado Deeli" roughly translates to "My Rival" and is a vibrant discussion between two rivals, one of whom is always making a fuss about anything and everything, even when things are all good! "Gargar", with its collaboration of xylophone, whistles, Wiyaala's effervescent vocals and relentless groove represents, quite literally, the band's "joining together" for this EP. In contrast, "I Know" sees Sonny Johns takes over lead vocal duties to lament the breakdown of a relationship accompanied by muted horns and Wiyaala's soothing backing vocals. "Nimmbalia" continues in a mellow and reassuring tone before emerging as one of the most uplifting and simultaneously fierce cuts on the EP! The traditional version of "Bawa" - the original take of which can be found on last year's "Small Small" LP - strips things back a little, before culminating in a battle of xylophone, whistles and choir. "Yeri Villa" has a wonderfully laid back, sun drenched feel with some truly beautiful vocal refrains, and finally - only available on the digital version - comes the deeply percussive and trance inducing "Darpeny", rounding off a rather stunning EP from this cross continental outfit.

All tracks feature Ghanaian singer, song-writer, model and actor, Wiyaala. With a strong fanbase in Africa and beyond, "the lioness" made her mark on Wah Wah 45s and BBC 6 Music last year when she featured on the A-listed "Senye", described as "perfection" by Annie Mac and "pure joy!" by Tash LC.

                                Pico EP

Japanese producer boys be kko returns to Labyrinth Records for his latest EP 'Pico'. Elegantly dance-centric, Pico and Kanari focus on textured drum work and richly layered melodies, underpinning these elements with club-ready energy and dynamics.

With its tribal beats, Japanese-inspired instrumentation and infectious energy, every element of the track 'Pico' has been crafted for summer festivals & parties through its euphoric blending of different styles - creating something unique and unforgettable.

The title track ‘Pico’ blends organic drum work with effortlessly unique and compelling synths to create a detailed sonic landscape, presenting new discoveries upon every re-listen.

‘Kanari’ adopts a darker edge with growling bass, haunting melodies and pulsating FX. A true heads-down roller likely to transport dancers to new realms.

Salford City Records treat us to a various artists EP of new originals that fall remarkably in line with the rest of the label's piano house and rave reissues that they've faithfully dished out to us over the last 12 months.

Featuring producer MiTM aka Eddie Taylor, and singer songwriter Shelby Carmel - both from Leeds - the EP features three original tracks plus a mash-up style remix of eurodance project JK vs. Nicole J McCloud cleverly entitled "You Make Me Rock The House".

MiTM opens with the rampant piano riifs and fruity vox of "Nasty'er" - which seems to combine Fantazia-era handbag house stylings and the fairground qualities of happy hardcore into a dizzying sugar rush of enjoyment.

Next up, MiTM is joined by James Sammon aka The Pianoman - responsible for Maxime's classics such as "Cast A Spell", and "Tribute To Asha" - for a ingenious mashup which features Nicole's "Rock The House" vocal over JK's "You Make Me Feel Good" instrumental - an instant piano house anthem and one of the crowning glories of the series so far!

Side B sees MiTM hit the accelerator with "Loving You" - utilizing JX's "Son Of A Gun" vocal to devastating effect whilst a jubilant and funky piano and bass groove ensure arms aloft and spirits high. Finally, Shelby Carmel concludes the EP in mighty fine style with an exceptional cover of True Faith's "Take Me Away" - singing the vocal herself, adding fizzy synth stabs and switching up the original's breakbeat for a more 4/4 pounder which flips into an cheeky bassline / 4X4 drop after the breakdown; adding her own personality onto this bona fide rave anthem.

Absolutely top drawer stuff from start to finish. Relive the feels of that golden 90s period with the Salford City Records massive!

Matt says: One of my favourites from SCR - not least due to that amazing JK vs. Nicole mash-up. Although retrotastic in nature these are relatively new cuts from the crew - for those with a Maximes, Bowlers or Angles itch they need to scratch.

                                  Rhythm And Truth EP

The boys from the ‘Borough are back! It’s been almost ten years since 6BP were last on Delusions Of Grandeur so we’re stoked to welcome them back with a killer 3 track EP which sees them on fine form and with their classic sound mixing up crunchy disco drums, warm analogue synths and punchy bass lines to make you move.

Opening track Rhythm sets the pace with a loopy, uptempo filter house track which takes you straight to the dance floor. Reminding us of that classic DJ Q sound of the late 90’s the fellow Scotsmen let things roll, the one bar re peating bass sample hooking you in whilst dubbed out FX add a trippy touch.

Next up things go nice and deep on Truth with a repeating piano sample tak ing centre stage whilst trademark 6BP vocals filter in and out of the mix. Later on we’re treated to some classic Philly strings which lift the track, adding a euphoric element to this pensive yet uplifting little groover.

Rounding off the EP things go deeper still on Keep On, a subtle, mid tempo house chugger which will set the tone perfectly in any warm up set worth its salt whilst maintaining that distinctive warm and musical 6th Borough flavour we know and love.

Matt says: Back on home turn, 6th Borough Project deploy more of their concentric deep house goodness with three fresh tracks executed in the duo's trademark, luscious form. Whether your grooving on the terrace or hightailing it down the highway on your way to the next party - the unrelenting wiggly of these three tracks should keep you fuelled.

Originating with HoneyLuv, made in collaboration with Tuskegee co-founder Seth Troxler, and featuring portions of Paul Johnson’s classic 1998 track ‘So Much’, ’Sex & The City' is HoneyLuv’s homage to one of house music’s greats and an encapsulation of Tuskegee Music’s ethos of honouring the genre’s Black & Hispanic origins. Detroit house legend Marc Kinchen’s interpretations of the track imbues ‘Sex & The City’ with all the beloved MK touches, from the inimitable drum patterns to the instant-earworm melody.

The release marks the return of the label founded by Seth Troxler & The Martinez Brothers in 2014. In addition to music from its label heads, Tuskegee Music featured artists including Omar-S, Jamal Moss, K' Alexi Shelby, D-Knox and William Djoko before going into hiatus in 2019. The label’s upcoming schedule will continue to focus on its remit of supporting BIPOC artists, through the elevation of new talent and collaborations with some of house & techno’s most important and influential figures.

She may be making her first appearance on NuNorthern Soul, but Zeynep Erbay is no newcomer. A classically trained pianist who took a turn towards the dancefloor while at university, the Turkish DJ/producer earned her first release on Compost Records way back in 2007 after taking part in 2006’s Red Bull Music Academy programme. Since then, her career has been on an upwards trajectory, with releases on Fools Gold and Soul Clap Records confirming Erbay as a genuine rising star of underground electronic music.

On the Healer EP, the Istanbul-based producer showcases the more atmospheric, sun-kissed end of her productions, taking a turn away from synth-powered, disco-leaning club tracks towards something more suitable for al-fresco events, sun-down sets, and sofa-bound listening sessions.

Inspired by a poem inscribed on the back cover of the EP, Erbay’s two original instrumental tracks simply ooze with emotion. The poem tells the story of a whale searching for her family while helping others along the way, which acts as a metaphor for our wider search for belonging and acceptance.

This aural narrative unfolds firstly across ‘Heart of a Healer’, a slowly unfurling stunner in which emotion-rich chords, gentle electronic melodies and Erbay’s poignant and picturesque piano motifs, gently rise above a chunky dub disco bassline and mid-tempo, triple-time drums.

Delving further, the effortlessly emotional, life-affirming composition ‘Healer Whale’, where Erbay’s impeccable piano playing ushers in languid, jazz-flecked drums, dubby bass, sumptuous synth-strings and colourful, slow-moving chords.

On remix dutires, NYC-based Italian Danilo Braca, who also mastered the release, provides a fine club-focused fix of ‘Heart of a Healer’, laced with crunchy machine drums and undulating TB-303 acid lines. NuNorthern Soul regular Marshall Watson handles ‘Healer Whale’, first delivering a fine ‘Remix’ version that effortlessly blurs the boundary between dub disco and Balearic nu-disco, before serving up a shorter, ambient ‘Reprise’ version.

As the moon rose above the grove, the Stinkbug was perched on a mossy stump. A remarkably unique insect, the Stinkbug possessed a remarkable talent for mixing modern dancefloor bass with dub music. With its delicate wings, it created melodies that combined pulsating energy and deep basslines. The woodland creatures gathered, swaying to the beat and feeling the vibrations beneath their feet. The grove transformed into a magical dance floor, and techno dub was born

The brainchild of Thom Parris & Alfie Aukett from Next Door Records, Stinkbug is a sonic exploration into the many crossover possibilities of sub driven bass music and forward thinking techno.

                                    Miss Tiny

                                    DEN7 (EP)

Miss Tiny is a brand-new musical project featuring acclaimed record producer and Speedy Wunderground label founder Dan Carey (Wet Leg, Slowthai, Fontaines D.C.) alongside Ben Romans-Hopcraft of Warmduscher / Insecure Men / Childhood fame.

A spiritually, and methodically united front, Miss Tiny’s universe is a thoroughly explored romance between heritage, rebellion, and years old friendship; a triptych of variables all gravitating towards one signalled output, with no real sense of time, or external pressures. Having spent the best part of a decade orchestrating haphazard jam-sessions, Carey and Romans-Hopcraft would eventually go on to discover a fundamental principle of their own. One which would come to define Miss Tiny, throughout her various forms and guises.

“We called it anti-recording,” continues Carey. “Only doing it for the pleasure of doing it”. When fully committing to this practice, the music meticulously follows two courses; refine, or degrade. Perfect the moment, or let it go; never to be heard, or re-lived ever again for fear that the action of pressing record, would inevitably take ownership of the occasion and lead the experimentation into a downward spiral towards something all-together tangible.

The irony of a seminal producer and critically revered musician banding together out of mutual distaste for recording, is not one that’s gone amiss. In fact, they’ll be the first to proudly call it into question- and yet still, Miss Tiny holds her own despite all peripheral associations, and would eventually go on to be documented. These aren’t ‘sit-down-and-write-a-song’ kinda songs. These spurts of spontaneity which would, in time, ultimately form the duo's debut EP ‘DEN7’, are years’ worth of trial and error. Trial and elation. A process in which strong technique and melodic-manipulation are the sole foundations required to reinvent the meaning of memory; be it guitar and drums, or flesh and blood.

Produced and recorded at Carey’s ‘Speedy Wunderground’ studio in Streatham, ‘DEN7’ is a masterful introduction to a group whose members need none. Through chopping, editing, and re-defining their improvised segments into songs which they could eventually go on to learn, Carey and Romans-Hopcraft by chance, stumbled upon gold-dust. Like Alice and her looking glass, our two protagonists effortlessly pass through all notions of engineered logic in order to see beyond the expected. The bigger picture perhaps. Or the magic in the small things that matter most.

Brand new music from one of Europe’s pioneers of techno and IDM; Stefan Robbers aka Terrace and Florence. His early releases for Djax-Up-Beats and his own Eevo Lute Muzique in the early 90’s were hugely influential striking a sweet spot between stark minimalism, majestic analogue lushness and dance floor grooves. In more recent years his own reinterpretation of the Detroit sound can be found on the highly regarded Dutch label Delsin.

Here on his Thermionic EP Terrace sings out with such intensity that minds are blown. Listen to the brutal, exhilarating sequences of Territorial, which leads the new EP, and you will receive that message loud and clear. While the music is as much about the consequence of soulful depth, it is also about edgy machines communicating intimately. Delving into a more insightful breakdown of the artist’s genius process you can also hear how sweet chords fuse and then contrast with grainy Acidic sonics, leaving the tempo poised at an irresistible pace like all our futures depended on it. Complex yet not overly complicated there is an emotional directness pitched between the artist and audience that typifies all exceptional music. Such is the case evidently here and now.

As you move next onto the more subtle electro pulse of Thermon, shimmering keys dance around a frame by frame remembrance of robotic disco in the 23rd century. Again, each layer sizzles with the spark of electricity energising the atmospheres while continuously constructing worlds of dangerous discourse, fuelled only by the white-hot energy of the discotheque. The uplifting brilliance of Woodward follows filling the void with an explosion of colour that is all about life-affirming instrumentation, hitting you fast and loose with a cascade of arpeggios, tough drums plus an incendiary surge of melodic distraction causing the airwaves to crackle with celebration.

Completing this stunning release from Terrace are the fierce, hotwired grooves forged by Ritual, conjuring up endless combinations of an analogue model rediscovered. The sheer dancefloor animation found within each of Terrace’s productions on this EP purposefully point to and enhance Cyphon Recordings own mission to explore, propelling the emphasis forever forwards.

                                      THALA

                                      In Theory Depression (EP)

Rising artist THALA finds strength in her vulnerability on new EP In Theory Depression. After forging a path in hazy, lo-fi indie, this forthcoming release is home to her sharpest, boldest songwriting yet, rendering these deeply personal explorations of self in vivid, ‘90s influenced indie-rock, and looming, psych-inspired walls-of-sound.

Recalling the tangled indie-rock of Holly Humberstone, Soccer Mommy, and Phoebe Bridgers, and underpinned by spiky, surging guitars, the songs unearth tenderness, even as they rage.

In Theory Depression marks the artist’s most introspective writing yet, but as much as the lyrics excavate from hidden depths, they’re often paired with widescreen, cinematic-sounding melodies. It brings to mind both the dazzling soundscapes of Mazzy Star, the witty bite of Liz Phair, and the subtle punk influences of Juliana Hatfield, who also spins the genre’s more relentless strains into snarling and bittersweet alternative pop.

THALA has just wrapped up a joint UK tour, alongside showcases at Austin’s SXSW and with Brighton’s Great Escape festival also on the horizon. Having already won the backing of BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders, Wonderland Magazine and Clash, THALA’s ascent is only set to continue.

Italy-born, Ibiza-based producer and DJ, Tuccillo, joins the roster of Kerri Chandler’s Kaoz Theory with ‘The Waves’ EP, made up of five original compositions.

Based on the balearic island of Ibiza, Giuseppe Tuccillo, better known simply by his last name is a producer synonymous with a groove driven sound which blurs the lines between House, Deep House, Disco and Micro House with unparalleled finesse. Over the years his music has graced the likes of Nu Groove, Kwench, 20:20 Vision, Defected and Holic Trax, run by Tomoki Tamura with whom he collaborates on the Doublet project.

Here though, Tuccillo’s latest works come via the much-loved Kerri Chandler helmed, Kaoz Theory. Title-track ‘The Waves’ leads the way and winds through bright stab sequences, crisp drums and processed vocal textures. ‘Breaking Leds’ follows next and divers deep with diva vocals, classic house chords, pulsating subs and skippy drums before ‘Apple Eyes’ shifts the focus over to reduced percussion, dubbed out stabs and a snaking bass line.

Opening the flip side is ‘Good Vibration’, as the name would suggest a feel good journey through a bouncy bass line, intricately programmed organic drums and hypnotic vocal chants before ‘Around Five’ then concludes the EP, piecing together gritty bass flutters, a bumpy drum workout, subtly unfurling atmospherics and psychedelic, swirling guitars.

Hot on the heels of his recently released ‘Forever EP’ on Radio Slave’s evergreen Rekids, Eddie Fowlkes returns to the label with ‘Bahama Man EP’, another four-track EP of red-hot dancefloor cuts. From the swinging opening title track through to the jacking low end of closer ‘Cube’, Eddie’s knack for crafting his unique style of club-friendly cuts is on full display across the record, some of his finest work to date.

As one of techno’s originators, Eddie Fowlkes has shaped the genre for over 36 years. With his releases on Metroplex, Tresor, Sony, Peacefrog, and his own imprints CityBoy Records and Detroit Wax, Fowlkes' contribution to the blueprint of modern electronic music cannot be overstated.

Matt says: A true pioneer; Eddie Fowlkes has shaped the techno genre since day dot. His productions have always contained a maverick and reckless air; whilst also displaying some seriously advanced and sophisticated skills. He continues to be relevant and continues to push himself now; at 60 years old! Often overshadowed by Derrick May, Juan Atkins et al - Flashin' Fowlkes is a true legend of Detroit techno.

Yet another lost gem from the halcyon days of rave, hardcore and piano house gets reissued by the rigorous Salford City Records massive. The "Void EP" by Void (Paul Welding, Daniel Nolan & Dave McBurney) was originally released in 1991. Beginning with "Orcana" - a tough slice of swampy breakbeat, analogue fx swirls and occasional fog horn blasts - the kinda track that would make little sense until you were a double of Mitsubishi’s deep into the fun at Bowlers; whence it would transport you to a hellish rave utopia. As per the original release, it's the DJ Welly Warehouse mix featured here.

On the flip, "Addiction (The Tunnel Mix)" is a more celebratory and buoyant number than its darker cousin over on side A. Sugar-rushed female vox pairing beautifully with rising pads, flanging perx and frenetic arpeggios. A real fairground treat, with perfectly timed drops and breakdowns; pulsating with that day-glo ecstasy energy throughout.

                                        Officially licensed, 180g vinyl pressing.

Matt says: As we near the end of Salford City Records' frankly commendable and thoroughly extensive piano house reissue campaign there's still some gems to unearth. Void's tracks have featured previously in the series but now the label gift us the two most regarded mixes of "Orcana" and "Addiction". A huge one for the Angels / Bowlers / Thunderdome crowds of the 90s.

                                            Backslider EP

Dressed as if they would be equally comfortable starring in a modern spaghetti western as they are cutting slick silhouettes on a festival stage - are Guinean singer Falle Nioke, Graham Godfrey on drums, Steve Pringle on keys, Tom Dream on guitar and Josh Ludlow on bass.

As Pigeon develop and hone their sound further, Afro-disco remains at the core while jazz and no-wave make way for new elements of electro, rock and synth pop. The introduction of sequencers and drum machines sprinkles a little more structure into the mix, however the recording process still very much embodies the DIY spirit of band members that enjoy jamming together.

With previous support from Gilles Peterson, Elton John, Iggy Pop, Bandcamp, NPR, Uncut and many more, the new Pigeon EP will undoubtedly fly off the shelves.

                                              Bárbara Boeing

Brasiliana EP - Inc. Esa Williams Remix

Bárbara Boeing joins the ever-expanding Toy Tonics roster. The Brazilian DJ and Dekmantel Selectors favourite has teamed up with Italian producer and keyboardist Sam Ruffillo to create three tracks inspired by people like DJ Raffa, Mr. Monday, Yello, MBG International, Penny Penny and such like.

The results are quite spectacular, existing in a timeless bubble of dreamy house music which take in the tropes of early Italian dance records, add some UK rave attitude and cover the whole thing in a modern polish which gives extra sparkle and shine. Its an addictive formula which has seen her invited to perform at Dekmantel Selectors, Time Warp, Nuits Sonores, Lente Kabinet, Cocktail D'Amore, Flow Festival and many - the future’s bright for this rising star!

A sonic exploration of the culture and technologies that influence daily life in one of the most advanced countries on this globe, the land of the rising sun. As a recurring theme in Heinrich Muellers work, the Japanese Telecom EP takes inspiration from the exciting culture of the upcoming internet, robots, high speed trains and game culture from a future past and combines this with Detroit's hi-tech machine funk. Remastered and re-issued for the first time since its original release.

Though perhaps not as polished as 2001's 'Virtual Geisha', it's still a vital piece of electro history with a dope Castlevanian aesthetic.

Four. lush. deep house joints with his smooth signature drum loops and gloriously incidental melodies. Opener "Back In My Space" sets the scene beautifully with his casually swung drums creating a groove so delicious yet so effortless! The slower, funkier bounce of "Back To Nature" is also a particular highlight, while Airport Society aka Detroit duo of Brian Kage and Ryan Sadorus (who founded the label BerettaMusic) deliver an electrified remix of “Back in My Space”, accentuating the soulful elements, retaining the swing but switching up the sounds to suit their own unique, late night palette.

All tracks possess a speaker-tweakin' warmth, with all elements mixed to perfection and the bass frequencies sitting particularly nice. Mega stuff as per usual with Dez; who should probably be awarded some kind of award for his services to Akai's MPC sampler...  Highly recommended import copies that won't hang around long.

Hell Yeah heads to Brazil and the cultured sounds of Pedro Bertho for a hot new 12" that features Mariana Gehring and remixes from Romain FX and My Friend Dario. The digital version includes two bonus cuts while the vinyl is the first to have all-new artwork by FJD.

Now based in France, inclusive party promoter Pedro Bertho’s music is a melting pot of sound that draws on his own personal heritage and a life spent digging for records. That means that afro rhythms, Italo melodies, rolling reggae, deep house, and plenty more all get mixed up into something new.

They have come on the likes of Cracki Records and always search out innovative ways to bring euphoria to the dance floor.

For the first tune, he works with Mariana Gehring, a Sao Paulo-based singer and composer influenced by new MPB and other signature Brazilian sounds like Forro, Maracatu and Samba.

Their excellent 'Tornei' is a mix of full-fat bass and sensuous vocals. Fizzing synths, percussion and FX bring the energy while Gehring arrives in the breakdowns to bring the spine-tingling soul. Romain FX is a scene mainstay, label head at fauve, boiler room veteran and has released on the likes of Kalahari oyster cult and many more.

His version is a retro workout with lush cosmic melodies and slinky grown-up grooves sure to get the floor full.

Next is 'Elephants au 5eme', a busy mix of analogue drums and hits, wild elephant trumpets and fleshy synths that bring unusual tropical heat to any party. The same track is remixed by label regular and new school Balearic boss my Friend Dario.

He plays with the vocals, layers in shimmering chords, and keeps things dubby to make for another of his signature grooves.

                                                  Moreish Idols

                                                  Lock Eyes And Collide EP

Coherence is overrated. Especially if keeping things hazy, and not smoothing away all the rough edges, and allowing all the seeming contradictions to find their own unique harmony with each other in their own time can result in the heady magic of Lock Eyes & Collide, the second EP from South London-based quintet Moreish Idols. Across these four tracks, Moreish Idols deal in tangles of hyper-melodic guitar, sleepy-eyed murmurs glowing with unassuming poetry, blossoms of wise saxophone, rhythms that pulse and purr to their own inarguable logic. You could spend days trying to define what exactly it is they are doing over these fifteen or so minutes, but you’d be wiser to just lose yourself within Lock Eyes & Collide’s laser-guided twists and turns.

Pulling into focus. They passed tracks from initial collaborative song-writing sessions along to Dan Carey, who signed Moreish Idols to his Speedy Wunderground label and produced their first release on the label, the Float EP, in the summer of 2022 (they’d released a pair of self-released 7”s before lockdown). Restless, jerky, jagged and rhythmically centred, many of Float’s energetic pleasures bore the influence of their earlier flirtation of post-punk, but the ruminative When The River Runs Dry spelled deeper treasures lay within, while the erratic, wonderful Speedboat spoke to Moreish Idols’ essential gift for mystery. Lock Eyes & Collide is something else altogether, though – a looser constellation of ideas, a clearer hint of the group’s future.

The elements that compose the EP – swooning tremolo guitars, prickly melodic riddles, erudite saxophone improvs, loose and flexible rhythms – make perfect sense together, on vinyl if not on paper, sounding like Watery, Domestic-era Pavement one second and some bucolic Canterbury Scene prog the next, but always, always like Moreish Idols most of all.

The future that is undefined is limitless. If Lock Eyes & Collide captures Moreish Idols’ present, what do they see in their future? “If we’d just made Float II for our second EP, people would be, ‘Oh, they’re the band that does that,” says Tom. “I’m so glad we’ve made this weird alter-ego of our first EP; now we feel we can do whatever we want.”

Star Creature's Italian boogie buffalo Giovanni Damico comes fresh for the label with, I have to say, a pretty tantalizing new sound. Though still rooted in that vintage boogie sound (Linn drums and slap bass a plenty...) "Watch Out" jolts out with a confident urgency. Dazzling keyboard licks, meticulously programmed drums and a frenetic b-line combining perfectly with Damico's empowered vocal. "Nowhere" is a creeping synth disco track, reminiscent of Sylvester's more electronic and sultry numbers. "Night Time" opens with bright synth bursts before dropping into a raw boogie groove littered with space echo detritus. Then the fun loving vocal drops urging you into party mode. "Voodoo" irreverently cruises into full on space disco moods - recalling Arpadys & Sauver Mallia's soaring epics. Finally, "Cowbell (Eeh Aah Eeh)" is a tropical disco flavoured beast that has end-of-night qualities written all over it. Majestic flute, fluttering muted Strat licks, galloping percussion, this baby got it all...

Brilliantly diverse modern boogie flavours for the discerning dancer and jock! Highly recommended!

Matt says: One of my favourite signings of the Star Creature camp, Giovanni Damico can always be relied upon for summat fresh. "Watch Out" takes the boogie template into dazzling new territories - a highly syncopated offering with space-age sfx but with that vintage drum programming and untreated soulful vox that's synonymous with the genre. Sure to be a true classic of the scene that's so far undiscovered.

Across the 12”, the duo’s natural flair for hi-res IDM-tinged electronica is on full display, with four colourful and playful originals that toy with rhythm, harmony and experimentation with an almost flippent confidence.

Perfect for muscling some upstart off the decks and setting the tone for summat a bit more sophisticated. Elsewhere, witness ethereal electronics and red-shifted ambience that's beamed across the galaxies. Super strong EP of club / head electronix.

Single-sided 12" featuring 2 new originals from RSD US Ambassadors Jason Isbell & Amanda Shires, a reimagined version of "Tour of Duty" from Here We Rest, and a cover of Richard Thompson's "Beeswing". Side B includes a stunning vinyl etching designed by Pearl Rachinsky-Moreland.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Thee Oh Sees? Probably their riot-sparking live show, right? Visions of a guitar-chewing, speaker-smothering, tongue-wagging John Dwyer careening across your cranium, chased by a wild-eyed wrecking crew that drives every last hook home like it’s a nail in the coffin of what one thought it meant to make 21st century rock ’n’ roll?

Yeah, that sounds about right. But it misses a more important point—how impossible Thee Oh Sees have been been to pin down since Dwyer launched it in the late ’90s as a solo break from such sorely missed underground bands as Pink and Brown and Coachwhips. That restlessness extends to everything from the towering, thirteen-minute title track of 2010’s Warm Smile LP to the mercurial moods of 2008’s The Master’s Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In. And then there’s the home-brewed symphonies of Castlemania and the high-wire hooks of Carrion Crawler / The Dream, which dropped a second drum set among sunburnt organs, dovetailing guitars and rail-jumping rhythms.

If one prefers a slightly more subtle musical awakening, there’s always Putrifiers II, the latest in a long line of Oh Sees albums that expands the group’s sound well past your friendly neighborhood garage band. So while the space-odyssey nods of “Wax Face” actually sound like they’re meant to melt one’s ears straight off, the record’s full of deviant detours, from the poison-tipped string parts and Eno-esque engineering of “So Nice” to the groove-locked Krautrock inclinations of “Lupine Dominus.”

The most noticeable element may be Dwyer’s melodies, however, as they reveal a softer side to his songwriting, one that makes perfect sense considering just how disparate his dust-clearing influences are. Scott Walker, The Velvet Underground, The Zombies and the experimental Japanese act Les Rallizes Denudes are but a small taste of what informed Thee Oh Sees this time around, as Dwyer returned to the multi-instrumental ways of Castlemania— full-band sessions for another record are already underway—and rounded out a fuller, drier sound with drummer / engineer Chris Woodhouse and special guests like Mikal Cronin (sax), Heidi Maureen Alexander (trumpet, vocals) and K Dylan Edrich (viola).

DJ Eddie Fowlkes created the techno genre alongside Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. Now the 'Godfather of Techno Soul' uses his extensive knowledge and experience to create a dynamic wax release drenched in Motor City inspiration - this four-track vinyl package is both a love letter to his musical roots and an inspired representation of the left-of-centre house that Classic is known for. For the lead track, 'AHYEE', Eddie carves out his own sound in a low growl as distorted percussion whirs over a four-on-the-floor beat. 'Blow' goes tougher, with an undulating bass that adds a wonky unease to the rhythmic kick and syncopated decoration. On the B-side, ‘Talking To Me’ makes use of a distinctive spoken-word vocal over an expansive and rhythmically intricate accompaniment, celebrating the culture through expert sampling and production techniques, whilst ‘Complex’ is more beat-focused with driving synth rhythms. Coming from producing some of the first techno records nearly 40 years ago, unique releases like this continue to prove Fowlkes' status as a constant innovator, and his ear for house music is undeniable.

First up the man himself, Kerri Chandler with a deep, heads down stomper ‘Who’s Afraid Of The Dark’. Kerri at his hard hitting best, as vocal refrains wash over the chunkiest of synth stabs and basslines with crunched up percussion laying the basis for a track that is readymade for smoke filled clubs and pumping sound systems.

On the flip, Josh Butler ‘Sunday Club’ goes deep down the rabbit hole effortlessly moving from ethereal elegance to twisted machine energy, showcasing that light and dark can sit together seamlessly to produce something seriously special.
