COSMOBA

Cosmoba is a brand new Manchester based imprint from Kalcagni. Fresh from releasing his "Manners" EP on Distrito 91, Kalcagni dishes up 4 slices of funk-fueled electro for this label debut.

Lead track "Lost In The System" features retro stylings and gritty electro bass hooks. This is swiftly followed up by "Multislacking", the result of a weekend spent twisting up a modular rig, with wonky bass squelches and 80s pads underpinned by slamming beats.

On the flip side, "Culture Vulture" introduces some heavy 303 workouts, before "After The Fact" rounds off the EP nicely, taking the acid vibe in a slightly darker direction with wonky Reese synth fills and jacked up breaks.

There's a rich sense of cybernetic atmosphere throughout, with just the right amount of squelch and snap present in Kalcagni's synths and drum machines. The EP is mixed and mastered cohesively; with a dull layer of sonic oxidation giving it a rough but penetrating edge.

RIYL: Ceephax, Roy Of The Ravers, Analord-era AFX, Luke Vibert etc.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: New local producer from Levenshume debuts on his own label. We're really liking the sound of this - stronger and tougher than 95% of the new electro also-rans; Kalcagni clearly has his collection of machines under control.

Following up on Cosmoba’s debut release. "Lost In The System", label owner Kalcagni returns with another 4 tracker of vibey electro and breaks; setting out his mission statement with a clear intent as he handles his modest array of machines with dexterity and poise.

Kicking off with "Mute Mode", which is perhaps the most anthemic we've heard the producer thus far. Channeling deep house and acid melodics, laced over chunky breaks and a warm analog bass; it has a post-peak afterglow and invigorating energy oft lacking from the electro genre.  "Up Here (In The Head)" follows up with another 303 workout, layered with infectious bass hooks and effected synth trills and driven by a high octane electro groove full of wet splashy snares and skeletal hi-hat rhythms.

On the flip side, "System Addict" ups the BPM’s and flexes a more upfront electro groove, with beefy drums, gnarly stabs and a twisted, resonant bassline that bites at the ankles of the dancefloor. Meanwhile "Worn Out Version" provides a more mellow and alternative vibe to close out the EP, with squelchy modular synth riffs and lush minor chords that recall Radioactive Man's playful mainframe excursions.

Seriously promising stuff from this local producer - don't get left in the void!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: The second of two EPs introducing a new local talent from Levenshume. Kalcagni's ability to juxtapose deep atmospheres with jarring rhythms and robust productions is beautifully displayed across these four storming electro growlers. Big tip and a producer to keep an eye on.
