Distant Correspondent

Shatter / Badlands

“Nothing but the fall of ashes from which no phoenix can rise,” say Atlantic-straddling outfit Distant Correspondent. The band’s helmed by David Obuchowski (Goes Cube), who recruited Emily Gray (Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia), Michael Lengel, Edith Frost (signed to Drag City) and Tyler Wilcox to what was originally a completely secret project. Their songs were written largely by collaboration, albeit separately – David sent the vocal and guitar parts to Michael, who provided the bass and drum parts. Those tracks have grown and evolved since the addition of the other members, including Oxford-based Emily who added moving lyrics and narrative touches.

The quartet’s first single for Static Caravan, ‘Shatter’, is the first offering from an album they’re releasing in October on Hot Congress/Old Flame Records. It underlines just why they’ve been hotly tipped by websites such as Oh My Rockness and Vice’s Noisey blog. The 7” features two songs of woozy, atmospheric indie rock, combining gentle melancholy with brooding yet beautiful melodies. The Cocteau Twins are an obvious touchstone, but at times the four-piece also recall Red House Painters’ enchanting melancholy and song craft.

Lead track ‘Shatter’ is a bittersweet song whose ethereality and pop hooks dovetail gracefully, in a way reminiscent of Besnard Lakes. Topped with Edith Frost’s fragile, world-weary vocal, it then breaks down into expansive guitar pop propelled by a driving rhythm section and the kind of swirling, dream-like melancholia which reminds of Do Make Say Think, while Emily Gray’s closing monologue is stark and poetic, complementing the song’s epic sheen.‘Badlands’ on the flip is another slice of gauzy dream-pop which wouldn’t have sounded out of place on 4AD in the 1980s and early 1990s, all glistening guitar melody, throbbing bass and hypnotic, interlocking vocals. Its haunting refrain – “Death is not an option that I can afford” - adds to the spectral feel; all these ingredients combine to result in sparse but lilting, summery pop with a hint of darkness underneath the surface. On the evidence of this pair of songs, they’ll be burning brightly for a long time yet.

Strictly Ltd to 300 copies on 7” wax only.

The Districts

Great American Painting

Great American Painting is The Districts fifth full-length album; produced by Joe Chiccarelli (Spoon, The Strokes, Broken Social Scene) and recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound in LA.

Great American Painting is the rare album that shines a bright light on all that’s wrong in the world but somehow still channels a galvanizing sense of hope. With equal parts nuanced observation and raw outpouring of feeling, the Philadelphia-based band confront a constellation of problems eroding the American ideal (gentrification, gun violence, the crushing weight of late capitalism), ornamenting every track with their explosive yet elegant breed of indie-rock/post-punk.

Threading that commentary with intense self-reflection, Great American Painting ultimately fulfills a mission The Districts first embraced upon forming as teenagers in small-town Pennsylvania: an urge to create undeniably cathartic music that obliterates hopelessness and invites their audience along in dreaming up a far better future.

    Popular Manipulations

The Districts are a band that never stops moving. Popular Manipulations is an accurate representation of how much Robby, Braden, Connor, and Pat have grown, individually and as one solid unit. They’ve fallen in love and had their hearts broken and put back together again. They’re not the young underage band anymore, they’ve stepped out of their comfort zone and have come face to face with things that are so much bigger than them.

Popular Manipulations is life in the present. The way Robby belts from the depths of his chest compliments Pat’s crooning guitar while Braden and Connor lock in with a rhythm section so thick you could slice it with a knife. The songs are so visceral and compelling they make you like you’re experiencing every emotion at once. You can wade through the lyrical themes of manipulation, possessiveness, and anxiety or float among their dark and dreamy arrangements. Each song stands alone on its own but the synergy between them as a whole is explosive

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Soaring melancholic indie anthems are underpinned by a staggeringly precise rhythmic backbone of hammering percussion and rolling bass. Slightly grungy in places and brilliantly emotive and perfectly produced throughout. Brilliant stuff.

You Know I'm Not Going Anywhere

"You Know I’m Not Going Anywhere is an unachievable promise,” says The Districts bandleader Rob Grote. “It’s about a dream for love to last forever and a yearning to postpone death. It is about wanting to escape everyday life while also craving time with one who’s present. It’s a plea to remain the same in the face of constant change, and the certainty of going nowhere fast.” Written after playing nearly 200 shows over two years in support of their 2017 album, Popular Manipulations, The Districts’ fourth full-length You Know I’m Not Going Anywhere almost never arrived.

As they began to contemplate a new album, Grote and his longtime bandmates Pat Cassidy (guitar), Connor Jacobus (bass), and Braden Lawrence (drums) faced a transitional period that was painful for both personal and professional reasons, and found themselves fatigued and disoriented as a group. Grote also felt dysphoric from the anxiety-provoking state of the world today, while facing a daily battle with the dire health problems of his beloved dog. The Districts were forced to rethink everything. “This album was written as an escape and as reassurance. I was falling in love with someone new and trying to juggle this desperate desire to escape with the need to show up in my life. It’s pretty damn hard to be present and completely checked out all at once,” Grote explains. “It felt like much of my world had reached such a pitch that all I could do was try to tune it out. I felt really uncertain about the future of the band and super detached from much of what I used to identify with, on a personal level and with our music. I was thinking, ‘Do I want to keep doing music?’ ‘Do I want to keep doing it in this context?’” Grote retreated to his bedroom and started writing with no objective other than to create. Free from expectations, and with an acoustic guitar, synthesizer, and drum machine at hand, he discovered a newfound creative freedom.

        Disturbed

        Believe

Disturbed's latest "Believe" is both a consolidation and an evolution on their earlier recordings. It's muscular, confrontational power rock that made "The Sickness" so infectiously exciting, but twists things just enough to make the second time sounds as fresh as the first.

Fake Sugar’ is the debut album from the critically acclaimed vocalist Beth Ditto. The former lead singer of Indie Rock mainstay’s the ‘Gossip’, Ditto’s first solo album encompasses 12 tracks of driving blues, malt-shop pop, swooning rock and countrified soul, including the single ‘Fire’. In addition to releasing six acclaimed albums with the Gossip, Ditto has recorded with such artists as Blondie, disco legend Cerrone and drumstep DJ Netsky, collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier on her eponymous plus-sized luxury clothing line, modeled for Marc Jacobs and appeared in Tom Ford's Oscar-nominated film, Nocturnal Animals. She’s also a newlywed, which has given her a fresh perspective on romance that informs several songs on Fake Sugar. "This is adulthood, baby," she quips. "You fought for marriage equality, now you gotta live in it."

            Divide And Dissolve

            Gas Lit

Multidimensional duo Divide and Dissolve release their third full length studio album ‘Gas Lit’ on Invada Records, produced by Ruban Neilson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

Divide and Dissolve members Takiaya Reed (saxophone, guitar, live effects) and Sylvie Nehill (drums, live effects) create instrumental music that is both heavy and beautiful, classically influenced yet thrillingly contemporary and powerfully expressive and communicative. Their music has the ability to speak without words and utilises frequencies to interact with the naturally occurring resonance.

‘We Are Really Worried About You’ presents a formidable saxophone sound giving way to a surge of crushing percussion and heavy guitar riffs. ‘Denial’ is a potent blend of Takiaya’s ominous and unsettling sax that blows wide open into riff city for almost eight glorious minutes. Both tracks encapsulate the message behind the music: to undermine and destroy the white supremacist colonial frameworks and to fight for indigenous sovereignty, black and indigenous liberation, water, earth and indigenous land given back.

For fans of James Baldwin, Osa Atoe, Adrienne Davies, the ocean and freshwater, breath/breathing, Toni Morrison, Octavia Butler, Afro futurism, indigenous futurism, indigenous sovereignty, slavery abolition, resistance, the forest, bodies of water, being submerged, the railroad and Ai Ogawa.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: At no point throughout 'Gas Lit' do you come away with the impression that they're just having a good time. This is a visceral and intense, but entirely enjoyable fusion of neo-classical timbres with metallic heft and shoegazey walls of sound. Towering and impeccably constructed.

                Divide And Dissolve

                Systemic

Divide and Dissolve’s new album, ‘Systemic’, examines the systems that intrinsically bind us, and calls for a system that facilitates life for everyone. It’s a message that fits with the band’s core intention: to make music that honours their ancestors and Indigenous land, to oppose white supremacy, and to work towards a future of Black and Indigenous liberation.

Like its predecessor, ‘Gas Lit’, ‘Systemic’ was produced by Ruban Neilson of Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

You can feel the deep intention in Divide and Dissolve’s music. Their dense sound is overwhelmingly heavy; a dissonant pounding of percussion, guitars, piano, synths and saxophone, interwoven with passages of orchestral beauty that give a feeling of respite. ‘Systemic’ is a thick wash of sound, equal parts beauty and anguish and creates a wholly encompassing experience for even a casual listener.

                  The Divine Comedy

                  A Short Album About Love

In 1990 Neil Hannon started recording and releasing under the name The Divine Comedy. Thirty years and twelve great albums later, Hannon is rightly adjudged one of the finest singer songwriters of his generation. To celebrate, Divine Comedy Records are remastering and reissuing nine of the band's classic albums. The reissues will be released by Neil Hannon’s own label Divine Comedy Records.

A Short Album About Love was conceived as a companion piece to the band's previous album Casanova. It was recorded live at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London in 1996 with a 30-piece orchestra, and was released in time for Valentine’s Day 1997, charting at 13 in the UK. NME described the show where the album was recorded as "an evening when dreams finally come true; a night of costume changes, classical kisses and - in time honoured tradition of drinking and dressing up - hugely sophisticated fun… One suspects it wouldn't be too hazardous to suggest that Neil Hannon is having by far the finest night of his entire sodding life." Time Out, reviewing the album, said: "Seven of the most heart-stoppingly gorgeous, romantic smoochers you have ever heard, all drenched in strings and emotion." The single Everybody Knows (Except You) reached 14 in the UK chart.

Absent Friends was first released in 2004. Describing the album, Neil said: "The songs use stories and characters as a framework to pin my ideas on. It's mostly about the eternal battle between the pull of personal freedom and the comfort of domesticity”. The album was recorded by Guy Massey, mixed by Nigel Godrich and features guest appearances by 6 Music DJ Lauren Laverne and French multi-instrumentalist Yann Tiersen. “The whole album is rich, beautiful and can make you smile and cry on the turn of a chorus” stated Phill Jupitus in the Radio Times, while the Guardian described it as an “ornate gem” and Word magazine said, “it’s Neil Hannon’s best yet”. Stand out tracks from the album include singles Come Home Billy Bird and Absent Friends, as well as fan favourites Our Mutual Friend and Charmed Life.

Written in the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, Bang.. took an acerbic look into the lives of the rich and powerful, and their impact on the rest of us “down in the street below.” It was described in the Sunday Times as "a collection worthy of Randy Newman at his best" while Pitchfork said, "Neil Hannon continues to quietly and effectively operate his own one-man niche, thanks to impeccable arrangements and tightrope-walking songwriting." Includes the singles At The Indie Disco and I Like, and live favourites Assume The Perpendicular and The Complete Banker.

                        The Divine Comedy

                        Casanova

In 1990 Neil Hannon started recording and releasing under the name The Divine Comedy. Thirty years and twelve great albums later, Hannon is rightly adjudged one of the finest singer songwriters of his generation. Casanova was the band's third album and the first to bring real success. First released in 1996 it explored and dissected a world of casual affairs, loose morals and a thousand anxieties in between. From the NME: "’Casanova’ fairly teems with sex, with suppressed desires.. with ample evidence of what dicks men can be." Mojo described it as a "glorious.. sumptuous paean to life, love and longing." Select said "Only a barren heart could resist it.. Sensible people simply swooned." Singles Something For The Weekend, Becoming More Like Alfie and The Frog Princess became chart hits and airplay staples while an alternate version of Songs Of Love became the theme music for legendary Channel 4 sitcom Father Ted.

                          The Divine Comedy

                          Fin De Siècle

In 1990 Neil Hannon started recording and releasing under the name The Divine Comedy. Thirty years and twelve great albums later, Hannon is rightly adjudged one of the finest singer songwriters of his generation. To celebrate, Divine Comedy Records are remastering and reissuing nine of the band's classic albums. The reissues will be released by Neil Hannon’s own label Divine Comedy Records.

Fin de Siècle was first released in 1998. Chock full of millennial angst, it was the band's most ambitious album to date. Time Out described it as "A huge, extraordinary record – a concept album even, picking at the scabs of twentieth century existence.. quintessential pop music." Metro said "Fin de Siècle ...is dangerously close to being a masterpiece.. funny, sad, melodically compelling and obsessed with the themes of numbness, death and public transport." Neil McCormick in the Telegraph said "Neil Hannon is one of the most prodigiously talented individuals working in the world of pop... The range of Hannon’s songwriting is simply unmatched by any of his contemporaries." The album charted at number 9, but it was the third single from the album, National Express, that provided The Divine Comedy with their first top ten single. Other stand out tracks from the album include Generation Sex, The Certainty Of Chance and Sunrise.

Liberation was the band’s first full album. Released in 1993 it achieved few sales but plenty of critical acclaim. The NME described it as “an array of seductive yarns.. glorious, gleeful tunesmanship."  Dave Cavanagh, writing in Select said "..one of the bountiful, overflowing joys of the year. Any year." Melody Maker described it as "An album that could make any listener want to stumble up to him and proclaim ‘Neil, you’re a genius’". Tracks such as Your Daddy's Car, Europop, and Lucy are fan favourites still performed live by the band to this day while Pop Singers Fear Of The Pollen Count was released as a single from the 1999 "Best Of.“

Promenade, originally released in 1994, loosely recounts a day in the life of a pair of friends / siblings / lovers. It was an immediate hit with the critics and catapulted Neil to early notoriety in France. The Melody Maker said "’Promenade’ is music hall, cool French films, late nights in a bygone city, sea-shanties swelled by alcohol.. ‘Promenade’ walks the path of indulgence with bravado and a mischievous grin. A stolen masterpiece."  Q picked it as one of its best albums of ’94 and described it as "One of the most unexpected and original treasures of the year."  Reviewing for Select, Stuart Maconie said "’Promenade’ is a masterpiece. If you do one brave and imaginative thing this month, be on the side of the angels and buy this record."  Stand out tracks include Don't Look Down, The Summerhouse and Tonight We Fly, the song with which, to this day, the band close every live set.

Regeneration was originally released in 2001. Recorded with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich, the album was a more stripped back, guitar-oriented affair, and a big break with their trademark orchestral sound. The Observer said: "Regeneration marks, for Hannon, a personal and musical breakthrough". Time Out said: "Hannon has finally created an album as complete and deftly wondrous as you suspected he was capable of; every track shines with a love for music." The Times said "A subtle collection of gorgeous pop songs. Combining the lyrical dexterity of old with some spectacular melodies, this is an album that lives up to the promise of its title". Key tracks from the album include singles Love What You Do, Bad Ambassador and Perfect Lovesong.

Neil Hannon, one of the country’s foremost songwriters, releases a wonderful new Divine Comedy album ‘Office Politics’. It’s the follow-up to the acclaimed top ten 2016 album ‘Foreverland’. “Office Politics” is a 16 track tour de force full of inventive, timeless music peopled with a typically irreverent cast of characters. “It has synthesizers. And songs about synthesizers,” Neil says. “But don’t panic. It also has guitars, orchestras, accordions, and songs about love and greed.” But ‘Office Politics’ central characters are the machines. Or ‘Infernal Machines’ as one track rages.

“I do try to make normal records,” Neil says with a smile. ”But it always seems to wander off into odd territories.”

And for that we should be thankful.

Barry says: Divine Comedy have been at the forefront of whimsical, wry songwriting and dryly observational humour for close to 30 years now, and their latest outing continues the trend, breaching office interactions, politicism and day-to-day humour with their trademark style. Brilliantly familiar but also perfectly up to date. Another cleverly observant and humorous success for Hannon & co.

                                      The Divine Comedy

                                      Foreverland - Reissue

In 1990 Neil Hannon started recording and releasing under the name The Divine Comedy. Thirty years and twelve great albums later, Hannon is rightly adjudged one of the finest singer songwriters of his generation. To celebrate, Divine Comedy Records are updating and reissuing the band’s catalogue.

‘Foreverland’ - a record about “meeting your soul mate and living happily ever after... and then what comes after happily ever after” - was first released in 2016. Mojo described it as “Funny, learned and poignant by turns,” while Uncut said it was “sumptuous, orchestral pop laced with lyrical absurdity.”

The album includes singles ‘Catherine The Great’ ‘How Can You Leave Me On My Own’ and ‘To The Rescue’.

The updated LP edition consists of the original album, packaged with a digital download code for the album plus bonus tracks of demos and alternate versions lovingly curated by Neil Hannon, much of which have never been heard before.

The LP is pressed on heavyweight black vinyl in a gatefold sleeve accompanied with photos, credits and extensive liner notes written by Neil, covering the context and inspiration behind the album and its songs.

The renaissance of Divine Horsemen—which began in 2021 with In The Red’s release of Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix, the legendary Los Angeles punk band’s first release in 33 years—continues with a thrilling and unexpected new album, Bitter End Of A Sweet Night. The new sixteen-track collection again features the band’s cofounding members, singers-songwriters Chris Desjardins (better known as Chris D.) and Julie Christensen, and the core members of the ferocious Hot Rise band—guitarist / co-writer Peter Andrus (a member of the group’s late ’80s lineup), bassist Bobby Permanent and X’s nonpareil drummer DJ Bonebrake. The sound is filled out by Green On Red and Dream Syndicate keyboardist Chris Cacavas (who appeared on the 1984 Chris D. / Divine Horsemen album Time Stands Still) and classically trained violinist Elizabeth Wilson. Desjardins produced the album. Divine Horsemen’s dramatic In The Red bow and a 2020 archival set of club performances from 1985 and 1987, issued by Feeding Tube Records, reacquainted listeners with their stormy power and eclectic roots-punk musicianship, which diversified the searing approach taken by Desjardins’ previous band, foundational L.A. punk unit the Flesh Eaters. (Christiansen had previously regrouped with her former husband and musical partner Desjardins on I Used to Be Pretty, the 2018 album that reunited the 1980 “all-star” Flesh Eaters lineup.) Reaction to the group’s rebirth was rapturous. Jaime Pina of Punk Globe called Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix “brilliant,” adding, “The music is lush with both acoustic and electric guitars and the songs pull influences from all over, including country, rock, traditional ethnic folk music and blues.” Michael Toland wrote in The Big Takeover, “Reclaiming its classic sound of sweat- and grime-stained Americana, Divine Horsemen is reborn like the mythical creature in the title.” John Apice of Americana Highways raved, “Like the Rolling Stones, [Divine Horsemen] continue to thrill. They have grit, muscle and potency….Divine indeed.”

Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix

Angeles, California—Divine Horsemen, the fiery, eclectic ’80s group that rode the unique vocal chemistry of Chris Desjardins (a.k.a. Chris D.) and Julie Christensen, return to the musical stage with Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix, a collection of all-new recordings. Co-produced by Desjardins and Craig Parker Adams (who engineered I Used To Be Pretty, the 2019 release by Chris D.’s groundbreaking ’70s punk band the Flesh Eaters), this new 13-track album comprises the first new music by the Horsemen in thirty-three years.

Founded after the dissolution of the Flesh Eaters and launched with the 1984 Enigma Records album Time Stands Still, billed as Chris D./Divine Horseman, the band released three albums and an EP on SST Records, all of which featured the searing harmonies of Desjardins and Christensen, who were married at the time. The couple split professionally and personally just prior to the release of their January 1988 EP A Handful of Sand. However, the two musicians remained in touch over the years, and Christensen contributed vocals to five tracks on I Used To Be Pretty, which reunited the 1980 “all-star” edition of the Flesh Eaters heard on the Ruby/Slash classic A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die. By then, the idea of reviving Divine Horsemen was already percolating.

Featuring onetime Divine Horsemen guitarist Peter Andrus, who had appeared on A Handful Of Sand and the 1987 album Snake Handler, and Bobby Permanent, the 2021 Divine Horsemen lineup is completed by drummer DJ Bonebrake of the incomparable L.A. band X. Hot Rise Of An Ice Cream Phoenix stands as a bracing new achievement by a distinctive musical partnership that has always marched to the beat of its own drum. Like the Flesh Eaters’ recent reunion, it’s a welcome return that plays to the group’s historic strengths.

Arkansas native, Lee Moore moved to Memphis in 1975 with only one goal in mind: to make it big in the music industry and to release music that would be played in New York, L.A and everywhere in between.

As a singer and songwriter Lee Moore spent the 1980s collaborating in Memphis with the best of the best session musicians and vocalists from labels like Volt and Stax Records to record and release futuristic boogie, soul, and funk. Lee Moore unfortunately never got close to reach his goals of fame and fortune.

Lee's final project for the Score label is a bonafide underground Gospel burner. Originally released in 1989 it's a perfect look into his transition from the rougher edged Funk, Disco & Boogie of his earlier efforts and shows his smooth transition into a more celestial and blessed musical output. Again this one’s a real rarity and Past Due have secured this high quality, legit reissue for the heads.

                                            Last Spa On Earth

Genre: Indie, Electronic, Latin. RIYL: Toro y Moi, Helado Negro, Rosalía, Tame Impala, Cuco.

Divino Niño are no strangers to bold reinvention. When Camilo Medina and Javier Forero—friends whose bond dates back to their childhoods in Bogotá, Colombia—moved to Chicago and recruited guitarist Guillermo Rodriguez to form a band, they were psych-pop outsiders playing live shows with a drum machine. With the addition of drummer Pierce Codina, their 2019 breakthrough and debut LP for Winspear, Foam, solidified their place as local indie rock mainstays.

Soon after, multi-instrumentalist Justin Vittori joined to round out their lineup. Once again, with their masterful, unpredictable, and eminently danceable new album, the band has done something radical: They totally upended the way they write songs, eschewing practice room jams for unrelentingly collaborative beats, implied grooves for immersive dance floor heaters, and mellow vibes for frenetic doses of reggaeton, electropop, and trap on their most adventurous and ambitious work to date.

Welcome to the Last Spa on Earth. Written and recorded over the past two years, Last Spa on Earth deals in release and catharsis: confronting your darkest moments and coming out better for it. The album artwork, done by Medina, a longstanding visual artist, depicts a dreamy, yet graffiti-tagged spa, void of physical bodies so listeners can envision themselves in this unique environment. It represents the yin and yang approach Divino Niño took while creating the album: the serenity of the spa and the chaos of the party. Ultimately, the band’s desire is to provide healing in the same way one feels after sweating, shivering, stretching, and resting at the spa against the backdrop of the world’s darkness. Last Spa on Earth is the cathartic product of Divino Niño letting go of their musical preconceptions, past traumas, and future anxieties to embrace change, chaos, and each other’s contributions both to these songs and to each other.

Divino Nino's new album Foam feels like catching up with a lifelong friend. There's undeniable songwriting chemistry between guitarist Camilo Medina and bassist Javier Forero, who met as kids in Bogota, Colombia and years later reconnected by sheer happenstance after their families had both moved to Miami. Both studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where they met guitarist Guillermo Rodriguez and eventually Drummer Pierce Codina. Now Chicagoans, their rhythmic, soulful - and at times bilingual - Latinx punk songs are a reflection of their continent-spanning bond and proof that Divino Nino couldn't have formed without unlikely but happy coincidences.

The ten tracks on Foam feature wistfully romantic lyrics like the yearning plea on the title track ("I really wanna run away with you"), and sunny, honeyed arrangements. Songs like "Quiero" trade-off between English and Spanish with woozy guitars and harmonies anchoring the sweetness of the lyrics. The quartet's Latin American roots seep in throughout the LP's silky psychedelic flourishes but especially on single "Maria," which is sung entirely in Spanish. Inspired in equal parts by Argentine punk and the narratives of Mexican telenovelas, the personality-filled track is one of the most memorable on the record.

                                                  Divorce

NIGHT SCHOOL are proud to present the debut full-length album by Glasgow Divorce. “Divorce” is the culmination of four years of uncompromising noise-rock brutality. Having set their own standard with a brace of 7”s, EPs and split singles, released on a plethora of renowned labels like Optimo Music, Merok, Milk, Winning Sperm Party, Night School and Gravy - as well as extensively touring the UK and Europe - Divorce have channeled themselves anew into a miasma of hate and power that is their debut album. Since their formation in 2008 they have progressed from no wave dirge practitioners to an unique cult that blurs the boundaries of what 'punk', 'noise-rock' or 'metal' are presumed to sound like. Remaining slippery in definition but relentlessly focused, Divorce have evolved into a singular, incomparable unit.

Recorded by Ali Walker at Glasgow's Arc Studio & Devil's Own Studio, “Divorce” finds the band pushing their furious sound further than ever before; a torrent of pummeling rhythms and serrated, overdriven riffs, extended freak outs and ecstatic push and pull dynamics. They have also explored their experimental tendencies more, incorporating power-electronics, white noise and, on the track “Stabby (Stabby) Stab”, free-jazz saxophone (courtesy of guest musician James Swinburne). All this, combined with an over-arching determination to take their music to new limits structurally and sonically, makes “Divorce” a unified audio experience. Divorce are Jennie Fulk (vocals), Vickie McDonald (guitars), VSO (bass) and Andy Brown (drums).

Now seeing a CD release, 'Divorce' is accompanied by a second disc chronicling the band's post-Optimo Records output. "Singles" is the first time many of these songs have been available in digital form and it documents a band growing in confidence, ambition and ferocity. From early cuts on Night School through a plethora of UK independent labels' releases, each song warps the Divorce dynamic in different ways and hints at the now-established new baseline for intensity that is Divorce 2013 Recorded by Ali Walker at Glasgow's Arc Studio & Devil's Own Studio, the group's debut album “Divorce” finds the band pushing their furious sound further than ever before; a torrent of pummeling rhythms and serrated, overdriven riffs, extended freak outs and ecstatic push and pull dynamics. Butterfly: Original Series Soundtrack

Grammy nominated ‘Stranger Things’ composers and S U R V I V E members Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein return to score three part British drama ‘Butterfly’.

Housed in a heavyweight spined sleeve and pressed on 180g black vinyl with digital download card included.

“We had just come off our first project that had established us as these retrosynth/80s producers, and we wanted to do something that helped get us out of that box,” Dixon and Stein said in a press release. “Obviously there are still synths being used, and coincidentally some of them are from the 80s, but hopefully this score won’t be received as such.”

The music to ‘Butterfly’ sustains Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein’s proclivity for locating humanism in their electronics. The signals they send have some sort of uncanny correlation with core feelings. More uncanny is their tonal grasp of what it is to be young and curious.

‘Butterfly’ is the story of 11-year-old Max who identifies as a girl and wants to live her life as Maxine. Her estranged parents Vicky and Stephen attempt to work out how best to cope with and support this huge life decision.

                                                        LP includes digital download code.

Barry says: AARGH. I always loved the throbbing synths and intense atmospheres in Dixon & Stein's work under their own names (soundtracking Stranger Things for example), and as 'Survive', but this soundtrack takes all of that oscillator knowledge and inject it with a healthy dose of hazy 80's reverie (despite their insistence to the contrary), all saturation and arps. Completely on-board.

                                                        Spheres (Original Score)

‘Spheres’ is a celestially immersive experience focusing on the human connection with the cosmos - with music composed and performed by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein.

Written and directed by Eliza McNitt (‘Fistful of Stars’, ‘Without Fire’), ‘Spheres’ will be released on the Oculus Rift and is presented by City Lights and Protozoa Pictures. Darren Aronofsky and Ari Handel are executive producers.

Grammy nominated Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein need no introduction as two of today’s most highly regarded film score composers, having worked on ‘Stranger Things’ series 1 and 2 and ‘Butterfly’, as well as being members of S U R V I V E.

This one is equally as excellent, but a little more geared towards the ambient end of the spectrum, with cavernous echoing reverb and subtly panned swirls of industrial machination, this is equally as superb as their previous work but considerably darker. A perfect flipside to the coin.

With rich oscillator throbs and tense pads akimbo, it's yet another suite of perfectly manicured soundtrackery that's perfect for the series (obviously) and just as good on the home stereo. Lovely.

Barry says: You synth soundtrack fans are ALWAYS in safe hands with Dixon & Stein (aka Survive). With rich oscillator throbs and tense pads akimbo, it's yet another suite of perfectly manicured soundtrackery that's perfect for the series (obviously) and just as good on the home stereo. Lovely.

With its pillowy synth-pads and rich textures, the soundtrack to Volume Two seamlessly wanders through the 80s world of ‘Stranger Things’, breeding an unthreatening serenity with a gentle shift toward a darker mood. Floating between sweeter moments which temporarily blossom amidst the danger and decay, Volume Two is the second part of the ‘Stranger Things’ score, reaching climactic highs as the series comes to an end.

This soundtrack is instantly reminiscent of works by John Carpenter (‘Halloween’, ‘The Thing’), Tangerine Dream and Vangelis (‘Blade Runner’), whilst also delving into the ambience of Aphex Twin and more modern composers such as Cliff Martinez (‘Drive’, ‘Solaris’).

Moody synth ambience, throbbing saw waves and eerie sweeps. Unsurprisingly brilliant.

                                                              Kyle Dixon & Michael Stein

                                                              Stranger Things Season 2

Dixon and Stein return for the latest addition to their overwhelming spate of excellence over the past couple years. Following on from the first series waas never going to be easy for anyone involved, with it's 80's buddy-movie hauntology vibe being perfectly accentuated by Survive's less shadowy alter-ego on soundtrack duties, but series 2 has lived up to that expectation in every way. I know, that episode was pretty ridiculous, but you don't have to listen to it do you.

We kick things off with the haunting melancholy beauty of 'Walkin In Hawkins', perfectly capturing the eerie ambience of the city streets after the discovery of an analogue hell, hidden behind a bit of your local school. It's a moment we're all familiar with i'm sure, but Dixon & Stein manage to make its duality seem alluring, pressing forwards with paddling apreggio's and swelling pads.  Pieces like 'Eulogy' and 'On The Bus' talking things slowly forwards, opening the filters into an edgy benzoed bliss.

As we move onwards, things shift from a resolved optimism, into the inevitable downturn of a threatened society, with pieces like 'Descent Into The Rift' and 'Escape' providing a darker edge to things, moving towards the inevitable crescentic audiovisual finale. It's a brilliant companion to the programme, and just as much a divine pleasure in it's own right. Impeccable.

For the past four decades, a growing cult of soul music collectors have sought two obscure LPs and a handful of extremely rare 45s released on the vanity record label LAD Productions, Inc. between the late seventies and the mid eighties by the mysterious South Side Chicago singer/song writer Larry Dixon. Larry's raw songs capture the transition from R&B to boogie-down as disco was rapidly becoming extinct. They also perfectly illustrate Larry’s ability to overcome his environment and discrimination, transcended by his determination to write and produce music. With the support of his faithful musicians, Larry's success was only hindered by lack of airplay and promotion, but his talent shines through. This is the story of Larry Dixon, his label LAD Productions, Inc., and his friends and family throughout four decades of music in Chicago’s toughest neighborhoods. Jerome Derradji is proud to reactivate Past Due Records - the boogie funk division of Still Music to release this fantastic archive – what many consider to be the Holy Grail - of Chicago Funk, Boogie and Soul. Each format includes a unique booklet with the story of Larry Dixon and his friends, written by Jacob Arnold, along with numerous pictures and documents previously never published. Artwork is by Al Kent from Million Dollar Disco.

                                                                Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!?

McKinley Dixon calls the late Toni Morrison the greatest rapper of all time; and the way he tackles topics like survival, violence, and religion within the expansive landscape of the Black experience, evokes her novels. It is from the title of Morrison‘s Beloved trilogy where he finds the title of his new album with City Slang Records out June 2: Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? Musically his household was defined by “artists whose first name was Mary,” including Mary J. Blige and gospel duo Mary Mary. Discovering Outkast was formative for Dixon, deepening his love for hip-hop while he also grew curious about the more theatrical rock of groups of the day, bands like My Chemical Romance and Panic! At The Disco that his Maryland friends introduced him to.

“Those groups also helped me with my sense of longing, since their music reflected a sense of longing,” he says. Eventually he channeled these competing influences into a debut EP he released in 2013. With time, his music became his primary means of self-expression, whether discussing Blackness or his own relationship with healing. Across his next releases, his style evolved and his confidence grew, especially when it came to live instrumentation.

His 2021 debut album For My Mama and Anyone Who Look Like Her was a game changer, as Dixon set his sights on heartache and grief. “I was making these really dense and chaotic songs, stuffing whatever thought I had into five and a half minutes,” Dixon says of that project. Beloved! Paradise! Jazz?! is an attempt at channeling different impulses. Sometimes rough and other times delicate, this record is a journey into is a journey into the psyche of McKinley Dixon, with all of the of the attendant peaks and valleys.

For My Mama And Anyone Who Look Like Her

Richmond, Virginia-based artist McKinley Dixon has always used his music as a tool for healing, exploring, and unpacking the Black experience in order to create stories for others like him. For My Mama And Anyone Who Look Like Her, Dixon’s debut album on Spacebomb, is the culmination of a journey where heartbreak and introspection challenged him to adapt new ways of communicating physically and mentally, as well as across time and space. The language accessibility aspect of this project draws right back to communication and connecting,”

Dixon explains. “I think about the messaging, and how this can be a way for another Black person, someone who looks like me, to listen to this and process the past. Everything I've learned about communication for this album culminates with this bigger question about time. Is time linear when you’re still healing and processing? Westerners look at time travel as something to conquer or control—it's a colonizer mindset. That’s ignoring how time travel can be done through stories and non-verbal communication, and doesn't acknowledge how close indigenous people are to the land and the connections groups have because they’ve existed somewhere for so long. Storytelling is time travel, it's taking the listener to that place. Quick time travel. Magic.” Never relying solely on beats, Dixon taps into a hybrid of jazz and rap, pulling in an array of piercing strings, soulful horns, percussion, and angelic vocalists throughout the album—plus features by Micah James, Lord Jah-Monte Ogbon, Pink Siifu, and more. Jazz instrumentals add a level of uncertainty, with the sounds and shifts evoking a lot of emotion and vulnerability.

It’s an energy he describes as “Pre-Kendrick Lamar To Pimp A Butterfly,” the era when rap adopted more live instrumentation. The best way to sum up this album is: I was sad, I was mad, and now I’m alive,” Dixon explains. “These things I talk about on the record have had harmful and brilliant effects on my timeline, and have forced me to be cognizant of the fact that living is complex. Rap has allowed me the language to communicate, and be someone who can communicate with people from all over. Knowing how far I’ve come, I think people will find trust in the message I’m sending.”

Eschewing hand-me-down ghetto tales from an across-the-pond 'hood, the precociously talented Dizzee Rascal instead tells it like it is from his (18 year old, East End) angle - unemployment, gun-crime, relationships, MC battles etc. Two years in the making, this LP takes in influences from UK garage, hip hop, r'n'b and drum'n'bass, but comes up with a unique sounding jagged-edged electronic sound. Definitely one to check out!

Standing tall against his best work, the record is a potent reminder of how Dizzee’s legendary status came to be, capturing him in incendiary form as he flows effortlessly through a collection of distinctly UK genres with unrivalled ease. Centred by swaggering flows and formidable wordplay, Dizzee’s latest body of work is yet another victory lap on what is one of the defining rap music legacies, and as the bars continue to rain down, just remember - it’s nothing personal.

                                                                          Dizzee Rascal

                                                                          EF A3

East London-born music legend and all round boundary-breaking innovator, Dizzee Rascal's new release marks the genesis of a new era for Dizzee and is the first album wholly written, recorded and produced in the UK in over a decade. ‘E3 AF’ is a 10-track layered, purposeful statement of intent, rooted in Dizzee’s inedible ties to both east London and Black British music’s legacy. His sound is sharper, stronger and more self-assured than ever, and it is obvious that he has poured the creative energy of the past few years into ‘E3 AF’ as a body of work. First single, L.L.L.L (Love Life Live Large), features Tottenham born MC Chip and kicks open the door with the force of a steel toe capped boot. Chip, adds another thwack of bravado to the rumbling, Dizzee-produced beat. ‘E3 AF’ confirms Dizzee’s status as an artist still very much in his prime, sonically it draws on the infectious pace of grime and resolutely forward-thinking UK rap. From one song to the next, you are taken on a journey through Black British musical excellence. Ice-cold UK drill drips on Smoke Boys-featuring ‘Act Like You Know’ (produced by MK the Plug) and Eastside pulses with pure grime courtesy of Chubby Dreadz and Platinum 45. Self-produced opener ‘God Knows’ (featuring P Money) and high-octane ‘You Don’t Know’ pull from dubstep, grime and drum ‘n’ bass while threatening to wreak havoc with your speakers. By the time Alicai Harley’s warm up vocals float over sunny syths on the deeply personal ‘Energies + Powers’ (produced by Steel Banglez), the album practically radiates heat. ‘E3 AF’ is set to confirm Dizzee Rascal’s status as the master at the top of his game.

Be Incredible (feat Rob Jones TV)

                                                                            Dizzee Rascal

                                                                            Maths & English

Dizzee Rascal returns with new album "Maths & English". On the one hand it's easily his most accessible record to date. On the other, it's as brutally honest and confrontational as anything he's done to date. Check out first single "Sirens" – with its Korn-inspired metal guitars. Or the Lyn Collins-sampling "Pussyole", which is the straightest hip hop track he's ever done. The album also features a host of special guests, including the vivacious backchat of Lily Allen on "Wanna Be", the Shy FX-produced "Da' Feelin", and the gangster rap anthem "Where's Da G's" with US legends Bun B and Pimp C (UGK). Then there's the reggae infused "Temptation" which samples Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys. While "Maths & English" may have been inspired by a huge number of different styles and influences, the album retains its distinctively British identity and only goes to enhance that Dizzee Rascal really is one of the country's best musical talents.

                                                                              Dizzee Rascal

                                                                              Showtime

Over the past twelve months, Dizzee has travelled the world, and been on a rollercoaster ride of new experiences. "Showtime" is a bigger-sounding album than his acclaimed debut "Boy In Da Corner" but it's equally individual. It's a force of nature; a volcanic ride of crazy wordplay, ghetto techno and bottom-heavy bass. "Boy In Da Corner" was stunning because of it's penetrating power and singular evocation of inner city life, and "Showtime" hits the spot for similar reasons – but with added bass rumble and, crucially more tunes. What Mills has dropped in neurosis he has gained in precision-guided anger.

                                                                                DJ 2Three / Jude Lawless

                                                                                Just Fine / Da Player

Another couple of sides of reggae blending from the 4Trac label. Side A offers up a jaunty rocksteady version of Mary J Blige's "Just Fine", given the VIP treatment by DJ 2Three. Flip it for an equally reggae-fied sound for First Choice's "The Player", revived by Jude Lawless.

This EP encapsulates DJ 3000's evolution, weaving a narrative from his Albanian heritage to pure Detroit techno.

This intention is perfectly demonstrated on "Kashkaval" which, at first listen, sounds like classic-era Metroplex electro. However DJ 3000 also mixes is a spoken word narrative from his Albanian father (discussing cheese at length, which is the title of the track in Albanian).

"Constant Sorrow" has breath taking sound design. With a full fat frequency spectrum that'll have sound systems throbbing but equally sounds almost transcendent on headphones. I gotta say, the vocal part might be a bit marmite for some people, so I'm hoping DJ 3000 does an instrumental of this seriously advanced electro tune.

"From The Ashes" recalls vintage UR - squelchy machine funk with a dark, sinister edge. Those compressed 909s jumping out the mix while a rubber band lead bass has us gyrating left and right.

"Crown Royal" concludes with a steady, 4x4 pulse decorated with colourful arps and driving chords - a bit Carl Craig if you ask me. And sounding very nice for it.

Taking us back to the sound of Bowlers and Thunderdome, it's Red Laser's international anti-hero DJ Absolutely Shit ready to blast us out of Tory misery in the same way as The Second Summer of Love did way back when. Hardcore will never die!

Irlam's infamous upstarts DJ Absolutely Shit are at it again with four more tracks to rattle yer spines and rupture yer spleens.
Utilizing the classic approach of sourcing a sick sample, adding a rugged breakbeat, then tweaking out the buzz for maximum enjoyment, the pair deliver an explosive EP of global hypercoloured mayhem that burns hotter than an oz of 'Ells Angels sputnik.

'Bridge To Your Heart' grabs Sade by the hand, shoves two purple doves down her throat and queue-jumps to the front of Bowlers for an endorphin-rushing hardcore workout full of modern beat engineering and sample manipulation.

Switching approach, 'Bolivia' shuns the dreamy feminism for an altogether more masculine affair - roping in the Wu for an argy-bargy, elbows-out speaker shaker full of hi-definition laser stabs and destructive, land mine subs.

Hitting the accelerator, 'Rocking You Eternally' traverses the jungle boarders in a blacked out Nova, Ab Shit's flair and panache at drum programming and contemporary production chops beautifully on show throughout this big system roller with a carp-hunting vocal hook.

'Gong' closes off proceedings, merging moods inna more seductive flavour. E-soaked pianos and a gentle throb coaxing us to that end-of-night climax that'll have us humming the piano line all the way down the M65 home.

No jokes cru, this is some of the best tackle to emerge outta the DJ Absolutely Shit studio to date. One of two, vinyl-only EPs and ahead of their debut album that follows on C90 tape.

Boing boing boing, boing boing boing, boing boing!!

                                                                                  STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: The strongest stuff TO DATE from the DJ Absolutely Shit studio. The catchy hooks, the technical breaks mangle-age, the nods to hardcore - it's all there - but our Irlam renegade seems to have a reached a zenith in terms of mixing and mastering; meaning this (and part two following in a few weeks) are the heaviest, soundsystem ready wax platters to land from the RL camp. Watch ya bassbins!

                                                                                  B2. Gong

DJ Absolutely Shit has fast injected new life into the old tropes of hardcore breakbeat and vintage rave music - updating the blueprint with fresh, soundsystem tickling techniques and modern sounds for the discerning 2023 dancefloors! Effortlessly becoming cult cultural leaders of the emerging new hardcore movement and easily one of the most collectable artists to grace our dance section for many moons!

"Sloggers Bar" contains the EPIC, "Close Your Eyes" - with that discombobulated vox that's haunted The White Hotel and anywhere else the Red Laser crew has DJed of late. "Breaktalo Dark" is equally anthemic; it's sub-reinforced rave stabs ricocheting through even the quaintest of rave dungeons whilst a whole manner of pill-poppin' yoof erupt into reckless abandon.

"My Desire" is perhaps the most retrotastic track of this new set - utilizing classic hip-house / electro vocals, a tidy old breakbeat and with superbly timed drops, this one of those precision arrangements that’ll cause alchemical bonds to form between dancers and DJs under the heat of a Big Night Out. Imperative!

Finally, "Pee Pee Soaked Heck Hole" replaces the dubplate-only cut (that was available on the 50 dub plate edition copies) - a blunted MPC jam showcasing some nice vintage break manipulation (one of the duo's trademarks) alongside jazz-informed keys and heavy phasing. It's reminiscent of the kinda jams that used to populate the shelves over the road at Fat City Records - perhaps hinting as to the background of one half of the outfit....

It's the one all the massive have been waiting for! Part 2 of the Salford sage - DJ Absolutely Shit's 'Memoirs Of A Crust Monster'. More hyped up tear outs, soundsystem ruffage, and bass 'n breaks love songs from our Hell's Angel-dodging beat freak.

Kicking things off with glowing neons and super-charged subs is 'Higher', a modern jungle monster decorated with classic hip-hop samples and a well known diva vox squealing through the melee.
A serious 'watch your bassbins' track - RL HQ have safety tested this on the most robust car stereo systems and so far have yet to avoid any cabinet damage - proceed with caution!

'Lost In Space' rolls outta the speaker stacks with a b-boy swagger and loose breaks. A tribute to classic breakdance electro galvanized with Ab Shit's intricate trademark production chops. You'll want to crack out your finest red Puma classics and a slick tracksuit for this one.

Onto 'Out On Love' and between you and me, someone needs to call the social service for samples - as it's unlikely you'll ever witness a more blatant case of sample molestation. Squeezing every last drop out of a catchy piano lick, TV snippet and drum break; the track really does highlight the unrivaled programming prowess of our Irlam renegade who's taken SP1000 trickery to its absolute zenith.

And an abject slight at those who put profits above people - another poignant ode to our changing cityscape driven by the most addictive boogie-based groove and clattering Linn drums.

The "Magic Overlooked" EP is music that lasts. Beautiful high quality, Detroit infused melodic techno for the soul. Much like Dolly's recent output, it joins the dots between early Motor City machine music, turn of the millennium tribalism and balls-out European clang. Absolutely storming techno music that's both feral and futuristic. Check!

With each release proceeding the last under a trail of fire and chest-beating tribalism. Setting thrusters to overdrive DJ Agitated careers through the cosmos at full pelt with four highly kinetic peak timers.

"Concrete Mimosa" in a beautifully poised album - sequenced to perfection and drifting through cerebral electronics and dreamy atmopsheres which occassionally burst into fully fledged future club cuts - "High" possibly being our favourite amongst the set for its rampaging modern techno stomp. The synthesis during the beatless numbers is fabulous, and DJ Balduin obviously has a knack at carving out the most original sounds from his patchbay. Check it!

Builds on first release with more vocalists. RIYL: Jlin, DJ Rashad, DJ Maphorisa. There’s more than a hint of ambition on the double LP sophomore effort from Sam Austin Rabede, the producer known as DJ Black Low. Pretoria, South Africa-born and based, the young man makes amapiano with new ways of expressing this local turned-global style of dance music. In DJ Black Low’s musical imagination, the songs manage to smoothly vacillate between dreamy and firmly-grounded. Adorned with vocalists across most of the twelve tracks, there’s a new dimension to Black Low’s now-signature approach to abstract, angular deconstruction of the rhythmic developments in his songs.

The album references influences and ambitions in its song titles and lyrics while the music itself is anthemic in its sonic and structural aspirations. On many of the songs a slow-burning tension transforms into something unexpected until you’re somewhere else as the track concludes. There is an emotional and compositional maturity that builds on his earlier work. Vocals and lyrics are in focus. Production collaborators among Black Low’s Gauteng Province circle add to the constantly churning array of ideas that populate this consistently surprising release. Despite being a relative newcomer, DJ Black Low is onto something here.

In many ways, DJ Black Low’s debut album, Uwami, shows the signs of an artist’s first offering in any musical genre. Showcasing fluency in a broad range of styles and stuffing a number of ideas to the record’s brim is the 20 year-old producer’s attempt to both introduce himself to a wide listenership and stamp a recognizable sound in their minds. In other ways, somewhat out of the young South African producer’s control, Uwami goes against the grain. The album comes at a time when South African electronic music is being fundamentally disrupted. Amapiano, the electronic music movement which first gained popularity with a small, core group of followers, now dominates the mainstream. Well-known and pervasive, amapiano borrows from a diverse palette of musical styles which are popular in South Africa’s largely Black townshipsjazz, kwaito, dibacardi, deep and afro house among them.

Instead of pandering to the seemingly insatiable local appetite and growing global penchant for amapiano though, on Uwami DJ Black Low seeks out the limits of the sound du jour and tries to stretch them. On his solo productions, he uses the samples and compositional norms that make amapiano hits the bedrock on which to experiment and improvise. With collaborators, DJ Black Low improvises within the boundaries of listener-friendly grooves. The sound he creates has foundations of what could easily have progressed into captivating amapiano songs on their own. But he uses improvised but structured electronic percussion and distortion sounds to drive the tracks in a particular direction. What remains is something like a deconstructed amapiano.

For a young producer living in the townships of the greater Pitori area of South Africa’s Gauteng province, there were few avenues available for Radebe to pursue a career in music. His trajectory shows the vulnerability of this pursuit. “I had started producing in 2013 and it so happened that I lost my equipment in 2014. I couldn’t afford to buy equipment. In 2017, a friend of mine who had been making music found a job and decided to quit music. He gave me his equipment and I was able to start producing again. That’s when I started getting back to it. I tried to pick up where I had left off, with hip hop and commercial house but I found that amapiano was the popular music. I liked it, so I started producing it.”

The young producer and DJ makes electronic music that sounds like nothing else: glitchy and fierce while smooth and soulful, all under the rubric of South Africa’s most-exported dance music movement to date. Now comes Uwami II, which features the rest of the tracks from the acclaimed debut plus a new song “Gijima.”

The Pretoria, South Africa-based artist has more work in the pipeline as we present these inimitable songs for the first time on vinyl. The song “Gijima” is a previously unreleased track Black Low chose to include in this collection as cremates more work at a furious pace. Quotes : “This is essential listening from a 20 year-old star.”—Resident Advisor Best Tracks of 2021 // “Uwami keeps an adventurous spirit at its core and pushes far beyond genre conventions in the process.”

Described by Diplo as 'violent, futuristic soul music', this is a branch of the club music that is perforated by harsh Bodymore breaks and gunshots and juxtaposed with off-kilter soul vocals from Blaqstarr himself.

                                                                                          DJ Bone

                                                                                          Black Market EP

"Black Market EP" is DJ Bone’s first output after a long production hiatus. A widely-respected DJ, producer, and  turntablist of the 90’s and 00’s; not to mention an early pioneer of the podcast format with his legendary 'DJ Bone Attacks' informing a whole generation of techno lovers which would become devote DJ Bone fans. Like Jeff Mills, Carl Cox and DJ Rush, he pioneered the use of three decks mixing techno and full throttle.

Drawing on the full 4/4 force of Detroit techno, ‘Rising’, ‘Fulmination’ and ‘In Solution’ charge with his renewed passion - bursting with heavenly strings, rippling synths, moody pads and energetic vocal stabs. ‘Power Of The Three’ is a rolling DnB workout, proving Bone’s skills reach all corners of the dancefloor.

A true pioneer dedicated to the art of techno, he’s the perfect fit for a new label from a legendary club like fabric, pointing both to the birthplace of the genre and ahead to its future. Recommended.

Exactly what you want from Bone - high tech, machine code rhythms, expansive techno that urges you to both dream and dance. There's even a cheeky DnB number thrown in. You know what to do!

On side A, Rakim's '97 boom-bapper, "Guess Who's Back" gets tweaked and boosted for exclusive DJ use - fattening up the low end and extended the drum intros & outros - ideal!

Side B sees Rakim joined by Eric B for the duo's high watermark hit: "Don't Sweat The Technique". Bounce keeps his surgery quite transparent on this already-masterful piece of hip-hop history, but again, working DJs are gonna enjoy the jazzy injection of energy and find this heavily pressed, smooth playing 7" a useful addition to their arsenal.

DJ Cat comes through on Scruniversal here as the young label continues to go from strength to strength early in its existence. This time he serves up some re-edits and reworks of old and rare records from Scru's friends' collections. Up first is 'Roots & Culture' which is a languid funk workout with Prince style vocals bring some libidinous vibes up top while sci-fi synths and raw claps and perc all flesh out the groove. 'Possibelle' then cuts loose on a much more laid back and steamy summer vibe with the sort of chords that have you laying back in the park and staring up at a cloudless sky.

                                                                                            TRACK LISTING

                                                                                            Roots & Culture
                                                                                            Possibelle

Fresh from dropping the world conquering "Posh People Make Me Ill", Ono are at it again, throwing another sonic curveball right around your melon. This time round, label favourite Stuart Chalmers (DJ Crackle) sets to work looping, layering and collaging a broad selection of sampled delights, loving cut up (in this case literally) from DJ Skip's (label head Michael Holland) extensive record collection. Taking an anything goes approach to source material the set switches between RnB, exotica, avant garde experiments, oddbal funk and disconcerting ambience, all chopped, screwed, slurred and spun out with maximum respect to Burroughs, Mike Cooper and Severed Heads. Whether you dig the frenetic and disorienting "Palm Treehouse Street Band", the headnodding bump of "Brandy Song For Supercat" or the borderline Balearic chill of "Beach Clouds" there's more than enough here to keep you coming back for more. Bravo.

"Skum and Villainy Edits Vol 1" by DJ Deviant represents a dynamic fusion of musical genres and tracks, interweaving elements from rock, hip-hop, and funk. “Intergalactic Rocket Fuel” incorporates everybody's favourite beats and pieces resulting in an energetic mashup.

"House Party Rocker" epitomises an electrifying blend of lively party hip-hop style harmonised with the potent funk-rock guitar riffs and it guarantees a thrilling experience on the dance floor.

This release is a superb selection for DJs looking to provide a vibrant and genre-blurring dance music adventure.

                                                                                            DJ Donna Summer

                                                                                            Panther Tracks

Traces of booty, techno and a whole lot of breakcore yield such gems as "Party People", "Get Down" and "Rock Rock Rock". No style too hard or too cheesy to learn from, "Panther Tracks" is like the ultimate rave; it's fun, slightly crazy, and will keep you dancing all night long.

Lush and sexy sample-based house music here from DJ E-Tones who revisits the classic sounds of Moodymann, Glenn Underground, Andres etc with a classy four tracker of organic sounds deftly sampled!

"Soul Detergent" kicks off with a catchy xylophone lick paired brilliantly with a soulful vocal sample and live disco drums chopped up via the MPC. "Black Shampoo" recalls Pal Joey or Sneak with its twisted, concentric disco-house grooves bolstered with extra bass and smudged Brass Construction elements. Finally, “More And More” sees a loopy, phased jazz-funk slick combined with First Choice’s classic “Letnomanputasunder” hook for a devastating slice of late night house music Ron Hardy himself would be proud off! Most recommended.

Leaving border control slackjawed and slanted, the latest release from Association Fatale finds its way from Paris to Piccadilly and I am in full buzz. Raised on US hardcore and recently active in the noise scene, Falcon cancelled his Wire subscription, got the gear in and flipped his mode into the lunatic fringe of the dance music world. This circuitous route to the 1210s provides the Frenchman with a particularly peculiar POV, fully represented in the Balearic industrial and concrete dancehall hits on this mini-LP.

Opener "You Make Me Feel So Good" splinters synth vox atop a tropical rhythm box, delivering a deranged but sunny sound a little like a lost Art Of Noise cover by SKRS, lifted to the next level by the slap bass of the second half. The rolling rhythm and moody synth tones of "Sit On My Face" follow, submerging Miami bass in Belgium's new beat gloom, all the while boasting an irresistible beat in a shamanic breaks style. "Love Blow Dem 40" brings back the slap bass amid a frenzy of insectile sequences, juddering bass wonks and a ketty treated vocal, softening up the cerebellum ahead of the machine voodoo of "Psy Rance", a majestic wonkbomb on the A4.

After an unsettling intro of background noise and barely audible voices, the B-side bursts into life via the potion shop aesthetics of "1Tension", a fusion of queasy wave generation, needlepoint synths and 64bit psychedelia which should work wonders in the witching hour. Falcon raises the tempo for the freakish dancehall of "You Make Me Feel So Good II", (essential listening for the Ruf Dug fans), before slipping the mooring with paradisiacal closer "Would You Like To Be A Gearstluz Too?", a gloriously retro bit of sample-a-delic Balearic house which could easily have graced an Ibiza tourist board promo circa 1993.

Though undeniably unusual and not without complexity, this record is oddly accessible - no mean feat for something utterly unlike all the other records on our shelves. Approach with open ears and an open mind.

The wonderfully named DJ F16 Falcon fires up with hardware and hooks us up with a long EP / mini LP of Balearic industrial bliss. Hints of dancehall lend a tropical flavour to proceedings, as the Frenchman lets loose on the samplers, drum machines and DX7. This is the new sound!

DJ Fett Burger & Cato Canari team up on this special collaboration release. Visiting that true Balearic spirit, a release that captures the sound, emotions and wunderlust of the White Isle (or some other paradise island of significant spiritual importance! - Ed).

"Para Siempre" comes in two different flavours, reflecting both the embryonic / hippy vibe in that late 80s / early 90s and the more upbeat, modernist approach which started with the trance explosion and continues through tech-house and techno today.

The "Italo Balearic" version hits that original flavour - with an evocative Spanish vocal drenched in reverb and paired to delicate cowbell and smouldering atmospheres, slowly introducing elements such as galloping synthline and ethereal strings and thus carefully conjuring upan expansive sonic vista.

The second mix, “Elements of Trance”, captures the spirit in a more modern way. A classy trance infused version (which modern Italo heads are gonna dig too I rek). Bit more energetic in style, but still with that melody and up-all-nite, smouldeting energy. No sleep till Tuesday!

Having broken out with two 12”s on Monroe Production’s Blueprint Records, DJ Fokus quickly followed up at the Monroe Studios, under the watchful eye of legendary engineer Pete Parsons (Voyager), with two self-funded 12”s on his Suicide imprint before putting pen to paper with Lucky Spin Recordings. Now regularly demanding three figure sums both releases have achieved cult status amongst junglists both young and old.

Real mid-90s, pirate radio flavour here with a fierce approach to break manipulation and sample tweaking. Never mind the sheer bassbin bustin' b-line. Heavy tackle that's become a highly coverted joint from jungle's embryonic period.

Now the hip-hop stars are back at it in 2017 with their new album "Still Hungry". While they both have collaborated on each other's solo records, "Still Hungry" marks their first joint album. Still Hungry boasts the best of what Format and Abs bring to the hip-hop community: funky, up-tempo and slick beats, coupled with intelligent, savvy lyrics. The album also showcases a grittier, harder sound, reflecting the maturity of the two artists, giving their audience some head-bobbing bangers that could rock any concert hall. Format and Abs have contributed to each other's albums, with Abs providing slick verses on Format's debut album "Music for the Mature B-Boy", and Format producing tracks on Abdominal's debut release "Escape from the Pigeon Hole". In 2003 they provided support for Jurassic 5's European tour, and then continued touring together as headliners based on how hype crowds became when they took the stage. Together, they have toured the UK more than twenty times to sold-out crowds. They have rocked stages such as Glastonbury Festival, Boomtown Festival and the iconic Jazz Café and Brixton Academy venues in London. They have also brought their high-energy shows to Australia and across Europe several times over the past fifteen years. Like any memorable hip-hop team, DJ Format & Abdominal have found success by working off each other's strengths and giving the global hip-hop community a unique and funky sound destined to be a fixture in every rap lover's collection.

"Devil's Workshop" is an instrumental album that sees DJ Format going in a slightly different direction to what you might have expected. Continuing the blueprint laid down in DJ Shadow's groundbreaking early work that made it possible for a hip hop producer to create genre-defying new compositions from old records, everything you hear is painstakingly pieced together from 100% samples to give the illusion you're listening to a band assembled by David Axelrod. There's no time for stagnant, repetitive loops that leave you wondering when a rapper is going to appear, instead each song keeps building in mood and intensity by the clever use of layer upon layer of carefully chosen samples. A rich tapestry of musical instruments from keyboards, horns & guitars through to vibes, bamboo flutes & sitars paint an exciting soundscape throughout the album and make it very difficult to pigeon-hole. While it is primarily an instrumental album, Format utilises a variety of vocal samples from sources as wide ranging as '60s spoken word, '70s religious records, right up to '80s & '90s rap records, all used out of their original context to tell a new story. "Devil's Workshop" is far from a typical DJ Format record or a typical hip hop record and should be listened to with an open mind. Everyone may have different ideas as to the meaning of certain songs but as long as they make you think....and feel something...that's all that really matters.
DJ Format says:"I wanted to make an instrumental album that perfectly reflects my musical tastes in 2021. Although hip hop was my first love and definitely shaped my whole relationship with music, nowadays I mostly listen to '60s jazz, psychedelic rock and everything in between. I've travelled half way around the world in search of old records that excite & inspired me to make music of my own and I truly believe that Devil's Workshop is my best work so far, it's the culmination of everything I've learnt over a lifetime of consuming & studying music".

                                                                                                      Hellworld

DJ Girl is a DJ and producer who was raised in Detroit, but since the pandemic has been based in Austin, Texas. She's the co-founder of the up and coming Eat Dis Records and her recent releases have been generating excitement in all the right places. In some ways, 'Hellworld' feels like a direct relation to a lot of early 2000s Planet Mu releases. It could sit neatly alongside Hellfish or Neil Landstrumm, with a similar anything-goes, gleeful attitude, but instead DJ Girl mashes together a driving sound that is founded upon Detroit techno and electro, Chicago juke and Miami bass, with an old school/new school production style that's finessed with distortion and sparse IDM production. It's a midwest USA style that takes a leaf from DJs and producers such as the wild-style hard techno of Lenny Dee, the tough midwest acid of Woody McBride and the system wrecking electro of Dynamix II, with a joyful, take-no-prisoners bounce.

'Hellworld' kicks off with the industrial juke of 'Get Down', followed by the powerful electro of 'Opp Pack Hittin' (the first of two tracks to feature MC Malik McFly). 'Technician' is a chirpy old school electro track that gets crazier as it progresses, while 'Lucky' mashes together samples and rough beats like an electro version of breakcore. 'Gallery' again features Malick McFly and switches between footwork beats, pumping techno and electro. 'So Hot' is hard 8-bar electro while 'When U Touch Me featuring Irish producer Lighght feels like a very manic take on hyperpop. The album ends with the tough, spiralling acid of 'Groover' which wouldn't be out of place on a late nineties Jeff Mills mix. The fun is infectious on this one.

                                                                                                          The Return Of The Magnificent

From the album's opening cut "Hip Hop", a look at where the scene is right now and a homage to the old school, it's clear that Jazzy Jeff wants to drag hip hop away from the guns, gangs, drugs and macho posturing of the mainstream. His stellar line-up of MCs working on the project includes the likes of Method Man, Big Daddy Kane, CL Smooth, Peedi Peedi, Raheem DeVaughn, Pos, Kardinal Offishall and Jean Grae, all of whom are totally on point. "The Return Of The Magnificent" is a reflection on the reality of modern life. There are songs to make you laugh, songs to make you cry, songs to make you contemplate the world, or songs to simply make you get down. As Jeff himself says 'This is turning out to be the best record I have ever done'. This is the real hip hop.

                                                                                                            DJ Koze

                                                                                                            Knock Knock

Like all DJ Koze records, "Knock Knock" exists outside of trend and influence. In fact, it's a step further beyond: absolutely every single thing here, from grooves to voices to handclaps, is otherworldly and unique. Which is not to say it is utterly alien abstraction, mind. There is still disco, there is still soul, there is still techno, there is still hip hop, there is still psychedelia – there are even wafts of easy listening, lost crackly thriftstore record memories and... sort of... indie rock – but though it may sound familiar, it never does what your brain thinks it's going to do.

Likewise with the voices. More than ever before on Koze's records, there are fascinating, individualist – and well-known – voices throughout "Knock Knock" but again, each of them is rendered strange, drawn into a different reality Bon Iver's ghostly hymnals on “Bonfire” are very recognizably Bon Iver, but the way they twist and merge with synthetic sounds until choir and computer are writhing around one another in bliss are something else. The ever-unique Róisín Murphy, on two stunning tracks, becomes a cyborg funk diva. Speech from Arrested Development delivers luscious and lazy R&B-funk on “Colors of Autumn”, but Koze's warping bass, dubwise echo and alien nature sounds take it to an alternate dimension tropical landscape. Kurt Wagner of Lambchop is a vocoder bohemian, Sophia Kennedy is a sci-fi Weimar cabaret star, José Gonzalez a holographic projection from an old film of South Sea Islands... on it goes, nothing is real, everyone is an inhabitant of Koze-world.

And that's what is crucial here. Koze is a world-maker. You don't get to chose how you hear his music – you enter his world or you don't, that's it. And that's why individual influences, whether it's the trippy German techno that's always rippled through is albums or the beat-scene abstract hip hop that he incorporated into his DJ-Kicks mix in 2015, are all but irrelevant. Though he'd never compare himself to anyone else, Koze only makes sense in the way that other world-builders do, from Bowie to Sun Ra, Outkast to Kate Bush. And Knock Knock is far and away his greatest statement of that. It's an album that came together slowly and steadily, his working processes arcane and mysterious in their steady accumulation of sound and inspiration. It's so complete and bursting with detail and consistency from every micro-second that you'd swear it was meticulously planned – but there was no masterplan, do desire to create a definitive artefact: the record itself decided when it was ready. And now it is ready, the most perfectly constructed portal into that other world, you had better be ready too!

DJ Koze exists both above and beyond club culture as we know it - his albums and remixes flying free from genre and trend - and symbiotically woven into its heart. Yes, he always abstracts and weirds out the principles of house, techno, hip hop, pop, psychedelia, exotica and so forth, but he does that because he understands them. And when it comes to club-demolishing tracks, he understands those principles as well as just about anybody on earth.
Thus he could create an enduring club tune like 2015's "XTC" that is strange, contemplative, even disturbing, bore little relation to anything around at the time, yet still got bodies moving and sweating better than way more obvious techno bangers. And thus the Knock Knock album, which melts a million genres and none into one another, can comfortably include "Seeing Aliens".
"Seeing Aliens" unquestionably is a banger, its bass riff snaking around your body like a python, its high-drama strings, pianos and outbursts of noise designed for maximum crowd pressure release. But, again, it sounds like nothing else, and its dynamics and twists unfold over eight and a half minutes in ways that will mess with your head every time no matter how many times you hear it.
The exclusive b-side track, "Nein König Nein" ("No King No"!), meanwhile, is slightly gentler on the face of it: it's less about sonic pressure, more about hip-shaking syncopation. But it too tells strange fairytales in its peculiar and brain-tweaking accumulation of detail, and though you'll hear archetypal sounds from the heart of house and disco in it, every last one of them becomes new and otherworldly.

                                                                                                              TRACK LISTING

DJ Koze unveils a spiritual and surprising journey into rapturous spheres with "Wespennest EP". The visionary artist and master of electronic sound, presents his first own release after 2018's global club hit "Pick Up".

"Candidasa" and "Wespennest" are the result of DJ Kozes inspiring stay in a secluded Benedictine monastery on the enchanting island of Sulawesi. Amidst this idyllic setting, he found the perfect environment to unleash his musical vision. He composed all of the music of "Candidasa" while lying on his stomach, in an act of deepest devotion and self-reflection. In doing so, he fed exclusively on so-called heroin kebabs to immerse himself in a trance-like state of creative flow. The result is a soundscape of unimagined depth and beauty that enchants the senses and transports listeners to another dimension by massively increasing the frequency of flicker fusion.

On "Wespennest” the wonderful Sophia Kennedy takes the stage and breathes a new dimension into the music with her impactful lyrics and vocals. With generous dedication, Sophia has provided exclusive excerpts of her yet unreleased songs, giving this track a radiant psychedelic power. The combination of DJ Kozes musical genius and Sophia Kennedy's glorious vocals creates a club track full of wonderment, opening up a mystical rapturous world for listeners. Already an instant classic of German dance music.

With "Candidasa" and "Wespennest" DJ Koze has once again pushed the boundaries of electronic sounds and created a spiritual journey that touches the soul and frees the mind. This EP is the first harbinger of his highly anticipated new album, which will be released in 2024. The time until the release can be wonderfully bridged with the magical album "Hit Parade", which DJ Koze has produced for the British legend Róisín Murphy and on which we can be carried away into the world of musical brilliance.

As wild and as oddball as ever, this double header displays his unique sonic artistry in fine form. Coupled with some inventive song writing to boot. It's another winner from the highly acclaimed producer.

Certain to appeal to anyone with a penchant for DJ Funk, Godfather, Mr. De and the whole (proto)footwork / jit scene.

Boosted and fed through dub FX units whilst coalesced with ruff UK club tropes it's perfectly suited to 2019's fervent consumption of all forms of dance music. Not only that, it fuckin' bites on the floor! Recommended.

Arguably one of the most interesting, yet humblest, labels out there, Cold Blow is at it again with a absolutely killer release that's impossible to ignore!

The two tracks from Helsinki's clubland stalwart, DJ Lifegoals, take the baton from braindance's golden era and make it his own while paying homage to the tradition. Distorted, yet emotional, catchy yet challenging. On the flipside Inceptum founder Forehard (aka Ruusuvuori) partners up with the enigmatic Larry Neverheard for a mystifying, intricate, but (brain)dancefloor-ready double bill. If you've been digging the anthemic side of RX-101, James Stinson's Another People Place alias and the cybernetics of Metroplex then this bad boys for you!

Following up his magical singles Rupees, Las-Vegas by way of Chicago underdog DJ LUCKY brings us his debut album Triple 7. Featuring fellow colleagues such as DJ Manny, Taso, and Weezy, this LP compiles work from a rather undocumented member of the Teklife family. These 10 tracks are pure modern footwork tailor-made for the dancers, but with tons of rave-friendly sonics in-between.

Opening things up with the ethereal DJ Manny collaboration War, Lucky sets the tone for the rest of the album with its thick, moody atmosphere. At times the vibe here is soulful, other times it’s eerie, often it’s all of the above. There’s rolling jungle breaks with a hip-hop lean on tracks like G.B.G.W., and there’s lots of sinister battle dramatics like those on Hit Da Flo. The synth work is masterfully crafted throughout the album, with lots of trance-inducing arpeggios like those on GAWD, and of course the drums are relentless, with huge swooshing snares bombarding your ears on Lost Without U. It’s a perfect soup pot of the emotions that make footwork great: dark and intimidating, yet full of passion. Triple 7 is a great introduction to a member of the footwork community that some fans might have slept on. Lucky grew up in the culture both making music and dancing, and this album proves how crucial his sound is to the art form. It’s uncut floor burning music sure enough to cause lots of trouble in the circle and beyond.

Legendary hip hop pioneer DJ Muggs and frequent David Lynch collaborator Dean Hurley join forces for the original score to the 2023 Sundance-premiering feature film Divinity. Equal parts sonically punishing and ethereal, the soundtrack delivers a unique punch that further intensifies the mind-bending, acid-trip experience of the film.

Divinity is a sci-fi dystopian odyssey produced by Steven Soderberg hand helmed by visionary director Eddie Alcazar. Set in the distant future, scientist Sterling Pierce dedicated his life to the quest for immortality, slowly making progress developing a serum named Divinity. Jaxxon Pierce, his son, now controls and profits from his father’s once benevolent dream. Society on their barren planet has been entirely perverted by the supremacy and pervasiveness of the drug. Two mysterious brothers arrive with a plan to abduct the mogul, and with the help of a woman named Nikita, they set on a trajectory hurtling toward true immortality.

Amidst the film’s extraordinary tapestry of stark aesthetics and themes, the score is a ten ton barbell of sonic weight. Crafted with 8-bit samplers, Wavestation synths, extended choir and string techniques, the soundtrack manages to swing wildly between the arenas of both music and sound design. Like all rich soundtracks, listening to the score on its own reconjures the imagery of the film in the screen of the listener’s mind, an aural experience that manages to encapsulate and pulse a matched intensity of the film.

Tracks like ‘The Brothers’ and ‘Reflective Dreams’ cascade Vangelis-esque tones, painting with broad strokes of cinematic grandeur and ethereal wonder. ‘Main Titles’ and ‘Infinity Techno’ conversely swing hard into relentless, punishing sonics; with brutal, pulsing energy representative of the twisted, relentless pursuit of immortality. A standout of the album is undoubtedly “Divinity 2 Infinity: The Odyssey,” featuring cult hip-hop hero and lyrical-savant Kool Keith. Written for the film’s end credits, the track is a satisfying throwback to the 90’s original soundtrack cut bespoke tailored to the film’s narrative themes.

DJ Muggs and Dean Hurley’s synergy yields a soundtrack that takes Divinity beyond the screen and into a multi-dimensional experience, inviting its listener along uncharted aural terrain for an unforgettable odyssey in sound.

Known and revered as the sonic mastermind behind both Cypress Hill and his own Soul Assassins imprint, here Muggs sheds the MCs and presents his latest dark-soaked productions as an illuminated manuscript of sorts; a fully immersive, instrumental soundtrack to the mysterious Dies Occidendum. No one wields the Excalibur of sonic darkness quite like Muggs. Combining ingredients of psych rock, gypsy folk with modern elements of trap, forged together under layers of his signature sonic grime, Muggs has created yet another blueprint for the utmost sonic menace and macabre. The Renaissance is upon us. Long live King Muggs.

A quick update: DJ Nate is from the West Side of Chicago and was the label's first ever footwork signing back in 2010, when Myspace was still a place to contact artists. His strange, maximalist, trippy and sample-heavy sound was the acid test to introduce footwork to a wider audience, outside Chicago and certain aficianados, and it created the opportunity for Planet Mu to release the two "Bangs & Works" compilations and numerous albums and singles from the genre, introducing the world to such artists as DJ Rashad, Jlin and Traxman. In the decade since "Da Trak Genious" was released, DJ Nate has been a popular R&B and Hip Hop producer and performer with a strong local following.

The highlight of this part of his career was "Gucci Goggles" which was an underground hit outside Chicago. His rise was slowed after he was paralysed from the neck down two years ago, an accident which he's recently recovered from. As well as his R&B, Nate has still been making the occasional footwork track, often putting videos out on youtube, and it's these tracks, uploaded between 2010 to now, which caught our ear. This selection of tracks feels like they're in direct continuity with his debut, perhaps not quite as chaotic as certain moments of "Da Trak Genious", but still with his trademark yearning vocal samples, cutting them into strange new pitched up and down musical motifs, his shout outs and rough beats intact

Another retrotastic trip on the waltzers, raves and adult playgrounds of yesteryear as Salford City Records continue to mine that e-soaked period of hedonism from '92 - '97.

Though sounding familiar to that era, this new 12" from DJ Neli is actually a new release from a new producer addicted to the sugar rushed pianos and soaring strings of rave's halcyon times.

In original form "Sweet Life" is a high-nrg blast of fairground house. With nods to handbag in its feel-good vocal and eurodans bass. The Dream Frequency remix is littered with vamping piano lines, deep Juno b-line and strings that put a rocket up your arse. Seriously, if you've not a smile as wide as the warehouse after side A then I fear you may be beyond help.

Onto side B and Stu Chapman ramps up the energy levels till we're almost verging on happy hardcore. Hyped up breaks, buzzsaw leads, pitched up vox - it's almost totally bOnKeRs! But defo still nodding to that classic Bowlers / Dreamscape / Maximes tape packs of the mid 90s.

Finally, SCR regular DJ Welly concludes the set with an M1-guided, proggy refix that slows down proceedings to a Digweed / Sasha-esque chug, complicates the arrangement with some (dare-I-say-it) more sophisticated elements and smothers the vocal in sfx and reverb.

Another winner from the crew! Limited copies...

Igarashi embraces the more euphoric and psychedelic side of 4-4. Both hit the sweet-spot of club-floor pleasure and headphone delight.

Alongside composers likeWendy Carlos, Bruce Haack, and frequent collaborator Gershon Kingsley, Perrey was among the first to introduce the world to the synthesizer as a compositional instrument, via notable tracks such as "Musique deL'infini", "Gossipo Perpetuo", and "Baroque Hoedown", famously used as the theme music to Disneyland's Main Street Electrical Parade. Along with many of his contemporaries, it was inevitable that such an influential instrumental composer would eventually be sampled into hip-hop tracks. His 1970 Moog composition "E.V.A." was especially popular among producers, making its way into tracks by Gang Starr, Dr. Octagon, Lord Finesse, Pete Rock, and innumerable others. To pay tribute to this prominent composition, Kay-Dee Records is proud to present this loving tribute to "E.V.A." on a 7" single, courtesy of French producer DJ Paikan, who also played sitar, guitar, kobol synth, and monopoly synth on the track. In Welcome to the club, Manchester legend DJ Paulette shares the highs, lows and lessons of a thirty-year music career, with help from some famous friends. One of the Haçienda’s first female DJs, Paulette has scaled the heights of the music industry, playing to crowds of thousands all around the world, and descended to the lows of being unceremoniously benched by COVID-19, with no chance of furlough and little support from the government. Here she tells her story, offering a remarkable view of the music industry from a Black woman’s perspective.

Behind the core values of peace, love, unity and respect, dance music is a world of exclusion, misogyny, racism and classism. But, as Paulette reveals, it is also a space bursting at the seams with powerful women. Part personal account, part call to arms, Welcome to the club exposes the exclusivity of the music industry while seeking to do justice to the often invisible women who keep the beat going.

                                                                                                                          VA -35 - 004

2019 marks thirty-five years that DJ PIERRE has been DJing and creating acid house music. This seven-part series of 35 remixes of acid track by Phuture is a celebration of the first monumental record for DJ Pierre and the spark for a new genre and movement in dance music history. “35 - 004” will be the fourth volume in this series and will feature 5 remixes from Paul Johnson, Marko Nastic, Zombie Nation, Shinedoe, and N.U.D.E.

In 1987 the first acid house record, “Acid Track”, was released by the Chicago group Phuture—DJ Pierre, DJ Spank-Spank and Herb J. It was DJ Pierre who thought to play and twist the knobs on the Roland TB-303 in such a way that it created an entirely new (and at that time, totally bizarre) instrumental sound often described as “squelchy”, trippy, psychedelic, futuristic, and out of this world. Spanky laid the beats and together “Acid Track” was born.

The legendary Ron Hardy, a resident DJ at the Music Box in Chicago, gave this strange track a listen and played it not once but four times on the dance floor until it created a frenzy.

News of the Acid “squelches” quickly spread around Chicago and then across the Atlantic, inspiring the next wave of pioneering acid artists in the UK to create their own. From here the Acid House movement began, known as the Second Summer of Love (1988). It was this movement that spread across Europe and the world, becoming the rave and festival scene we know today. Thank you DJ Pierre for your legendary contribution and innovative spark to dance music. This world would not be the same without “Acid Track” and acid house. Here’s looking forward to another thirty-five years.

It's a subliminal and heady mix comprising of swirling atmospheres, ricocheting rhythms and pleasantly rumbling subs (plus the odd muted saxophone flurry!). Fans of Madteo, Trilogy Tapes and Workshop are gonna find plenty get lost amongst the smokes and strobes on this warehouse-friendly release.

Perfect for sending listeners tumbling down the rabbit hole in the darkest recesses of the club come 4AM...
