      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There's no stopping the 'Giz train is there? It's no wonder with that many superb albums under their belt, there's a wealth of unheard demo material out there, and this goes to show that even their unheard material is still worth hearing. A great collection and a great looking double LP.

                Live In San Francisco '16

Just under a month after delivering their award-winning 2016 album Nonagon Infinity, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard took the stage at San Francisco’s The Independent for a set both wildly frenetic and meticulously executed. In one of their final club gigs before bursting onto the international scene—soon selling out amphitheaters and headlining festivals—the Melbourne septet laid down a breakneck performance that, in the words of SF Weekly, “made every organ ache just right.” Multi-tracked and impeccably mixed, Live in San Francisco ’16  simultaneously channels the massive energy of King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s set while echoing the sweaty intimacy of the 500-capacity venue.

Newly unearthed by ATO Records, Live in San Francisco ’16 captures an extraordinary moment in the band’s increasingly storied history, a 13-song spectacular likely to leave every listener awestruck and adrenalized.

                  STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: King Gizzard are without a doubt one of the busiest bands on the planet, and by all accounts, one of the greatest forces on the live circuit too. This is a true to life and superb sounding document of a band at the height of their powers. LONG LIVE KING GIZ.

                    Paper Mâché Dream Balloon

Starting out in 2010 as a solid garage rock group, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard followed their collective muse wherever it chose to lead them. For their latest opus, Paper Mâché Dream Balloon, they initially thought it was going to be filled with the darker, heavier material that the band has been playing live of late. But front man Stu Mackenzie soon decided that it was time to put aside the longer, more conceptual pieces and go in a completely new direction.

On previous records King Gizzard has channeled many different sounds: From heavily distorted, kraut-driven rock on their 2014 album I’m In Your Mind Fuzz to expansive, almost jazzy, Dead-like head trips on Quarters! Or as Mackenzie puts it, “I always wanted to be a band where you would expect the unexpected each time, with each album being treated like a different phase.”

Hence, the band’s seventh album was recorded using nothing but acoustic instruments. Mackenzie elaborated on this with: “Acoustic guitars, flute, double bass, fiddle, harmonica, drum kit, clarinet. Whatever we could find really.” The result is a lovely, lilting pop masterpiece that still evokes the same intoxicating exuberance as KGATLW’s most recent work, but with a more pastoral, communal feel to it.

"Their songs are dense, intricately crafted, and most importantly, powerful … King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard don't do predictability.” - Pitchfork”

“King Gizzard are on a dizzying trip to the center of psychedelia, cocooning themselves in spaced-out guitar lines and engorged melodies that demand to be viewed Disney-style, through a dodecahedral prism of light.” – The Guardian

PetroDragonic Apocalypse; Or, Dawn Of Eternal Night: An Annihilation Of Planet Earth And The Beginning Of Merciless Damnation

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard announce their 24th album, PetroDragonic Apocalypse; or, Dawn of Eternal Night: An Annihilation of Planet Earth and the Beginning of Merciless Damnation.

It is the group’s second full-length album excursion into thrash — following 2019’s Infest The Rats’ Nest — though, as you might expect, PetroDragonic Apocalypse is no mere retread of Rats’ Nest’s gory glories, but rather a full evolutionary step all of its own.

                        The Silver Cord

The Silver Cord', King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's 25th studio album is a full-hearted and purposeful embrace of electronic equipment and electronic music in its own right.

The Silver Cord comes in two iterations, the 1LP Standard Edition is a shorter, more condensed version, where the 2LP Extended Mix sees every song pushed toward the 10min mark and beyond.

The 2LP edition also comes on a deluxe mirror board gatefold jacket and both editions are housed in a premium printed thick brown outer sleeve.

Right as the clock was striking midnight on the last day of the year, King Gizzard issued Gumboot Soup, an entirely new 11-song collection. "Greenhouse Heat Death" and "All Is Known" are microtonal jams that roil and boil like the songs on Flying Microtonal Banana, the metallic "The Great Chain of Being" has the proggy feel of Murder of the Universe, and a bunch of mellow tracks ("Superposition," "I'm Sleepin' In," "The Wheel") could have been warped a bit and slotted right into Sketches of Brunswick East. The rest of the songs are strong neo-psych that would have fit well on the grab bag that was Polygondwanaland; the soft rock "Beginner's Luck" would have been a highlight with its marshmallowy chorus and jabbing guitar solo, and the same goes for the almost funky "Down the Sink," which reveals a loose-limbed side the band doesn't often show. So yes, it's a collection of castoffs and almost-weres, but the amazing thing is that it sounds like a greatest-hits collection made up of songs that are fully realized and played with passion and weirdness, not a half-baked slag heap. In case anyone needed it, Gumboot Soup is yet more proof that King Gizzard were firing all year long on all five cylinders, plus about four more that most bands don't have, and the body of work they created is immensely, intensely, jaw-droppingly impressive.

                          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Though I feel like I might be getting RSI from writing about King Giz, amazingly they've managed to smash out yet another killer LP, full of their trademark hooks and off-kilter psychedelic scree. Once again, a completely realised and cohesive collection comes from the KG camp.

Geelong’s insuppressible King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard release their new album ‘Flying Microtonal Banana’ on Heavenly Recordings - the first of five albums they are set to release in 2017.

Talking about the making of Flying Microtonal Banana, Eric Moore of the band said: “Earlier this year we started experimenting with a custom microtonal guitar our friend Zak made for Stu. The guitar was modified to play in 24- TET tuning and could only be played with other microtonal instruments. We ended up giving everyone a budget of $200 to buy instruments and turn them microtonal. The record features the modified electric guitars, basses, keyboards and harmonica as well as a Turkish horn called a Zurna.”

Shimmering, hypnotic and propulsive and powered along, as ever, by the metronomic beat of two drummers, ‘Flying Microtonal Banana’ takes a subtle musical shift away from the frazzled freak-beat of its predecessor, ‘Nonagon Infinity’. Trance like, in parts clipped and concise yet deeply psychedelic, it reveals yet another musical side to a band seemingly in perpetual motion.

Perhaps one of the most exciting live bands out there right now, they appeared at both Green Man and End Of The Road festivals over the summer as well as playing sold-out London shows at the Electric Ballroom, Moth Club and The Electric during 2016. The band will bring their unrestrained and free-wheeling live show back to the UK in 2017.

                            STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: K-Gizzle pull out another brilliant and no doubt in-demand album of angular melodies, psychedelic freak-outs and grooving churns of noise, interspersed with funked-up melodies and brilliantly effervescent indie rock. There really is a bit of everything here, classic rock, jazz, psych, noise. You name it, it's here, and executed to perfection.

                            Murder Of The Universe

Lit by thunderclaps and lightning, Murder Of The Universe inhabits a sonic landscape of death, decay, ossification, fossilisation, rebirth. It is a place occupied by wandering shape-shifting beasts, bleeding skies, pools of blood, great fires and mushroom clouds; a planet rent asunder by conflict.

A disorientating experience, the album hinges on three distinct sections that rise from larval beds, and whose lyrics should be carved in stone, squeezed from moss, discovered in ancient runes. And all the while a passing cast of characters imbue the tale with both human and non-human emotions.

Snippets of earlier recordings breakthrough collection I’m In Your Mind Fuzz and Nonagon Infinity resurface throughout like ghostly shadow form to haunt their latest sound. In years to come King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard will be judged not by their separate albums, but by a body of work where themes, melodies, motifs, riffs and ideas resurface and recur, each album peeling back a layer of the onion to glimpse at past and future alike.

“We’ve always thought of our albums as portals through which you can move from one to the other,” says Stu. “Or maybe each album is a bridge to the next part of the story. Songs sync together, records can be played in loops and past ideas recur or are reprised, and then woven into new textures. These ideas aren’t necessarily contrived though...sometimes these just happen.”

Barry says: Another brilliant outing from the King Giz fam. Psychedelic swirling guitars, echoing vocal melodies, impeccable percussive freak-outs and as ever, fist-pumping heavy af grooves.

'16 (ATO Records), a live album recorded during the band's 2016 U.S. tour stop at San Francisco venue The Independent. As the band enter their second decade – and their frontman still only thirty years old - the creative future of the band, as showcased on L.W., promises to be bolder, madder and more imaginative than ever.

                              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: They just keep going don't they? Fortunately, their artistic integrity and ability to write a tune hasn't been sacrificed at all with 'L.W' being possibly their most pronounced mix of dancefloor funk, groove and sludgy indie yet. It's more down the psych-funk route than some of their heavier numbers but is as ever, wildly inventive and quintessentially KGLW.

Fuzz Club's King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard 'Live At Red Rocks' box set is a heavy-duty, 15 LP monster. Recorded over three nights of the Aussie psych-rock polymaths raining down on the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO, USA, this bootleg captures nearly nine hours worth of live Gizz spread across 86 tracks and 30 sides of vinyl. Live At Red Rocks was recorded live Oct 10, Oct 11 and Nov 2 2022, mixed by the band's Stu Mackenzie and remastered for vinyl by James Plotkin exclusively for this edition.

Each of the three nights comes in its own 5LP slipcase, all housed together in one giant slipcase alongside a 60-page hardcover book with exclusive Red Rocks live photos by Cidney Bundon.

Timeland is a long-lost King Gizzard record mysteriously unearthed on the eve of 2022.

It will not appear on any DSPs anywhere, making the physical product a highly coveted collector's item.

Barry says: King Gizz return once again for their 19TH studio LP (not including all the live records that have dropped recently), and it's every bit the off-piste turn we expected it would be. Wonderfully weird, conceptually rich and skilfully performed. It's both exactly what you'd expect and everything you wouldn't expect.

                                    Big Swimmer

King Hannah crafts a musical tapestry that seamlessly weaves between the serene depths of meditative pop and the expansive, sonorous landscapes brimming with darkness, wit, and wry humor. Merrick’s vocals, a smoky delight, imbue her words with profound weight and potency, complemented by the bluesy canvases Whittle masterfully paints beneath them. Their sound effortlessly transitions from moments of post-rock expansiveness to evoking the sensation of Springsteen straying onto a gritty side-street off his highway to freedom.

In recent times, the duo has graced stages alongside esteemed artists such as Kurt Vile, Thurston Moore, Kevin Morby, and DIIV, captivating audiences at festivals across Europe and North America including End of the Road, Green Man, Primavera Sound, and Fusion, among others. I'm Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me

Liverpool duo Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle, aka King Hannah release their debut LP I’m Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me via City Slang.

The first single from the album, All Being Fine, sets the stall perfectly for the rest of I’m Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me, drenched as it is in cinematic, often immersive and offbeam soundscapes, punctuated by lyrics that are darkly romantic and thrillingly sardonic in equal measures. Written and then recorded with additional musicians Ted White, Jake Lipiec, and Olly Gorman in just eight months, the LP is a bold, memorable, even startling document of a dream shared, an ambition fulfilled and a vision realized. I’m Not Sorry, I Was Just Being Me is a spectacular debut from the duo and a clear indication this is the beginning of a long, fruitful journey for King Hannah.

King Hannah make music that lives somewhere between the gorgeously meditative pop of Yo La Tengo and the beautiful drama of Sharon Van Etten.

Hannah Merrick's vocals, which fall somewhere between Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and Sharon Van Etten, float over a beautifully narcotic backdrop of intricate guitar melodies and gentle drum rhythms that slowly build to a crescendo on album closer "It's Me And You, Kid".

Tell Me Your Mind And I'll Tell You Mine

Sometimes a band arrives out of nowhere, with a fully formed sound ready to fill a stadium. King Hannah are one of those bands. The Liverpool band led by the creative force of Hannah Merrick and Craig Whittle have arrived with ‘Tell Me Your Mind and I'll Tell You Mine’, an EP that is both soothing in its moods and intoxicating in its rushing soundscapes, containing a sound that is both brand new and completely mature. Their neon guitar lines and intimate torchlight vocals put the everyday on a pedestal, lifted by melodic licks that swell into dense and swirling atmospheric textures.

‘Tell Me Your Mind and I'll Tell You Mine’ sounds like late nights and early mornings, from the beauty and closeness of acoustic guitar in opener "And Then Out of Nowhere, It Rained", to the final immersive thicket of distorted guitars in “Reprise (Moving Day)”. In between, "Meal Deal" is smoky backroom Americana transposed onto the precarity of finding somewhere to live; "Bill Tench" feels like melancholic euphoria of travelling in fast cars at night – drums flash past like lines on the asphalt with angular guitars. "Crème Brûlée" is a moody fugged-out ballad for the everyday, and "The Sea Has Stretch Marks" conjures a whirling post-rock exploration of cinematic memories. Tell Me Your Mind And I'll Tell You Mine - 2023 Repress

King Hannah lean in to immersive moments in their music.

On this system shaking disc of deep dubwise righteousness, Jamaican Recordings have selected a storming set of tunes that were rebuilt with King Jammy at the controls...Hold tight massive, this is tha lick!

                                                    Bring It On

The second-ever release by Louisville legends (and venerable Drag City recording artists) King Kong.

This record is the centrepiece of Ethan Buckler’s high concept ‘blues’ trilogy that began with King Kong’s ‘Movie Star’ debut single (later reissued on Drag City) and concluded with the band’s debut LP, ‘The Old Man on the Bridge’.

Here, a power-trio lineup plays a triad of perfect songs and, in so doing, saves rock and roll from being ‘Albinized’.

In Conflict zine, Gerard Cosloy described this era of King Kong thusly: “King Kong have an almost unnatural understanding of the relationship between the various instruments. Or, as The Frogs would say: ‘That was a good drum break.’” You need this record.

                                                      6 Feet Beneath The Moon

As King Krule, 18 year old south east London based singer / producer / songwriter Archy Marshall has quietly and stealthily crafted a reputation for himself as one of the most raw and startling voices of a new generation. With his unexpectedly deep and mournful baritone tracing fissures of disappointment and social disorientation to devastating effect, Marshall has harnessed the inchoate frustration and fury of youth and translated it into a series of brilliant singles released on the likes of True Panther Sounds and Rinse over the past couple of years.

Now comes ‘6 Feet Beneath The Moon’, his first full-length on XL Recordings / True Panther Sounds, and with it, the much anticipated unveiling of the full scope and scale of Marshall’s vision. Over the course of 14 tracks, Marshall’s passions and confusions are rubbed raw and laid bare, the only connective tissue throughout it all being one of searing lyrical clarity paired with a confounding musical deftness which utterly belies his tender years.

From the opening clarion call of ‘Easy, Easy’ it is abundantly clear that this is a breathtakingly bold and arresting sonic worldview, as his songs, produced by Marshall along with Rodaidh McDonald (The XX, Savages), open up to become a loose knit meditation on regret and discontent, loss of faith and renewal of hope, and optimism in the face of desperation.

Eschewing much of his previously released material, ‘6 Feet Beneath The Moon’ firmly yet soundly rejects any notion of contemporary trends or peers to occupy its very own unique place on the music landscape, oscillating gently between the classic 50s soul of Gene Vincent and Elvis Presley to the minimal, avant-garde experimentation of Penguin Café Orchestra, to even the electronic smog and dub textures of Marshall’s beloved Rinse FM. This is a record where the nakedly bluesy stomp of the likes of ‘A Lizard State’ and ‘Easy, Easy’ sit effortlessly next to the low-end frequency and shimmering beats of ‘Neptune Estate’ and ‘Will I Come, after all. It is reflective as much of Marshall’s own eclectic tastes as it is of the frenetic pulse and rhythm of the city around him, particularly the rapidly changing south east areas in which he grew up.

There is a genuine grittiness and world weariness ingrained here, as exemplified so succinctly when Marshall sings, “Hate… runs through my blood” on the stunning ‘Out Getting Ribs’, the track which started all the fuss.

All these esoteric textures and fidgety, off-kilter rhythms make perfect sense as an album however, especially when you consider that incredible voiceWhether he is singing ruefully of youthful disaffection and “the heat of my own treason” (‘Ceiling’), or spitting out venomous lines like “I’m not going to crack like you cracked… I don’t want to be trapped in the black of your heart” over the jittery ‘A Lizard State’, its clear that something which marks Marshall out is his stunning ability to turn intense emotional peaks and troughs into spectacular pieces of artful, atmospheric and anthemic balladeering.

Some of the imagery is disturbing to be sure (as on the closer ‘Bathed In Grey’ where he offhandedly murmurs that “there was blood… found a body in the dark”) but the songs are also imbued with genuine heart as well. Taken as a whole, ‘6 Feet Beneath The Moon’ is the sound of a young man growing up - not for nothing is this album being released, unconventionally enough, on Saturday, which also marks Marshall’s 19th birthday - and attempting to grapple with the realities of the world he inhabits, an unsparing dissection of the social decay that has begun to set in around him - and a fascinating, brutal journey it is too.

After two feverishly received albums as King Krule, plus another low-key outing under his own name, this extraordinarily gifted 25-year-old from Peckham in South London adds further depth and substance to his oeuvre with another wondrous long-player called ‘Man Alive!’. It arrives packed full of his trademark sonic ambition and compositional skill, as well as the now-familiar corrosive lyricism and lurid social observation.

Barry says: Following on from his riotously well received LP's, and equally desirable solo album, Marshall returns with his darkest and most clashing outing yet. Snappy percussion and jazzy breaks work their way skilfully below the shadowy vocals and post-punk distortion. Experimental but cohesive, this is definitely the best Krule album yet.

                                                        Space Heavy

Archy Marshall announces Space Heavy, the fourth studio album under his King Krule alias, via XL Recordings. Coming 10 years on from his debut album, Space Heavy presents King Krule at his most articulate; using his years of experience to create a dynamic body of work that reveals something new with every listen.

Written from 2020 to 2022, between London and Liverpool, Space Heavy took shape over the course of commutes between the two cities where Archy Marshall was splitting his time. Befitting an album quite literally written on the commute between the two places he called home, Archy found himself fascinated by the notion of “the space between” - the space haunted by dreams of love, touching a narrative of lost connection, losing people and situations to the guillotine of the universe. Once written by Archy, the music was developed by frequent collaborator and producer Dilip Harris and long-time band mates Ignacio Salvadores (Saxophonist), George Bass (Drummer), James Wilson (Bass Guitarist) and Jack Towell (Guitarist).

The result is a 15-track full-length by the musical polymath that inhabits the deepest reaches of the subterranean sonic world that Archy has constructed over the course of his career as King Krule. In it you hear a generational artist stepping into the height of their artistic powers – the auteurism apparent on his debut 6 Feet Beneath The Moon, the shapeshifting sonic palette of The OOZ, the primality of Man Alive! and the raw vulnerability expressed on You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down all coalesce into a wizened, dynamic body of work that reveals new elements with each listen. In line with Archy’s interest in the space between, it is an album wherein the negative space demands the same attention as the positive space. If one is willing to wade into the mire the reward is rich.

Following on from 2020's 'Man Alive', 'Space Heavy' showcases King Krule masterfully balancing his trademark mix of scatty punk and lo-fi jazz - resulting in some of his most dynamic and impressive work to date. Superb stuff!

                                                          Wednesday Overcast

One of the most celebrated figureheads on the independent British scene, Archy Marshall returns with the dense, sprawling “The OOZ”, the much anticipated follow up to his debut “Six Feet Beneath the Moon”. Drifting and seeping through the cracks of South London like the album title, King Krule casts an unflinching eye over his kingdom, transforming his observations of all the disorientation and heartbreak of his youth into piercing narratives and poetry that are both startlingly honest and brutally beautiful. With “The OOZ”, Marshall finally takes the crown as poet laureate for the dazed and confused generation, painting a bleak and sometimes harrowing picture of a rapidly splintering city.

Where “Six Feet Beneath the Moon”, released in 2013, was a rigorous, rambling excavation of Marshall’s expansive body of work to date, “The OOZ” snaps into focus quickly and sharply, his modus operandi coming into view almost immediately. Over jazzy curlicues and guitars, the opener “Biscuit Town” sets out its stall irresistibly as Marshall sings about rapidly disintegrating romance and personal dissolution with acute, almost painful detail. These wrenching themes of self-annihilation and fraying relationships seem inextricably linked in Marshall’s eyes – once you lose yourself to someone else, you inevitably wind up losing yourself completely when they leave – and recur in other tracks. “Why’d you leave me? Because of my depression? You used to complete me but I guess I learnt a lesson” he spits on the roiling “Midnight 01 (Deep Sea Diver)”, and, even layered with the warm vocals of Okay Kaya, “Slush Puppy” is an unsparing dissection of a couple with nothing left to give, like a Gainsbourg and Birkin ballad gone toxic. Elsewhere, things only get darker, as Marshall desperately tries to find safe harbor in the city he knows and loves, only to be thwarted constantly, as on “The Cadet Leaps” and first single “Czech One”. Not even the synthetic high of chemicals, as shown in “Emergency Blimp” and “A Slide In (New Drugs)”, can stanch the suffering.

Although seeming at first abstract, “The OOZ” as a title proves oddly fitting. There are references littered throughout about its physical manifestation, or as Marshall himself says, “about earwax and snot and bodily fluids and skin and stuff that just comes out of you on a day to day basis”. But it works on a more figurative level too, with the OOZ also representing the unknown depths or horizons the solitary mind can travel to, whether it’s sinking into the deep sea or soaring through the night sky. It may be messy, unwieldy, even unsightly, Marshall seems to say - but we need The OOZ in order to exist.

Performed with a ferocious intensity, the recordings offer fans a glimpse into a live tour that never was, while also reminding them of the artist's unique stage presence and incredible performances delivered across his entire catalogue. Available on double LP and CD, You Heat Me Up, You Cool Me Down features a setlist of 17 songs that span the acclaimed artist’s entire discography including fan favourites “Easy Easy,” “Baby Blue,” “Out Getting Ribs” and more.

What they do here is add pure magic to an iconic soul song about Egypt which they are cleverly calling 'Rhymes Over Egypt.' It's a smooth groove with the the iconic chords rolling deep while new bars bring the funk up top and dusty drum breaks keep you moving. On the flip, King Most comes through with 'Ridin' Higher' which takes another soulful favorite and reworks it into something a little more bumping and energetic.

This one is the first on his own new KM label and has already, we're told, been getting some high-profile plays from the likes of A-Trak. The A-side pairs off two epic classics - 'Bam Bam Tom Tom Club' has that languid, ass-wiggling groove you know and love with a twisted reggae vocal to make for something brilliantly original. The B, meanwhile, is a vinyl-only exclusive pack with Jamaican sunshine. 'Reggae For Roy' is perfectly organic and horizontal with its new reggae beat delivered under a classic Roy Ayers vocal.

A certain DJ once said about a certain band that they were ‘always different, always the same’. The same can be said of King of the Slums – but what is the golden thread of DNA that pulses through their musical history? How can one describe them meaningfully? Is it rock music? Amplified violin driven folk? Strange story song daydream tales? Kitchen sink vignettes?

Maybe all of these... but that barely scratches the surface of their magical uniqueness. Lost virginity under disused railway arches.....strangeways headcases...unfit mothers....the dispossessed....the ignored...the unwanted....the pathologically challenged ...the defenceless....the indefensible...the lamented lost opportunities of what might have been.

King of the Slums started up in around 1985 in the 'Hulme', area of Manchester, England UK. They never considered themselves a 'Manchester' band, just a band with an arty background, a little self-indulgent with story-type songs. A distorted electric violin was used all the time in early recordings, along with guitar, bass and drums. They continued developing this sound throughout their initial singles and albums. In 1991, following their 3rd studio album, they fell out with record companies, management and each other and disbanded. Their instruments damaged, their biro’s broken. They were on the verge of a tour in the USA, and were considered a vital LIVE act.

In 2009 the band embarked on a new album, but everyone fell out again and only developed 5 or 6 new songs. The resulting album, “The Orphaned Files” sold out many times and is now a collector’s item but the band did not pursue things further.

The band got back together 7 years later and released a full brand new album ‘Manco Diablo’ in 2017 which received widespread critical acclaim. In short succession their 6th studio Album ‘Artgod Gods’ followed in 2018. Happily the new album featured the reintroduction of violin and viola. An incendiary and emotionally charged live performance, their first for many years, took place on 23rd June 2018 at Manchester’s Night and Day venue in which the band featured songs encompassing their full recorded history.

Kiss My Ring is the fourth full-length studio album from London-based rhythm ‘n’ blues garage rockers, the follow-up to 2017’s Goin’ Back To Wurstville. It features fourteen tracks, a mix of brand new original compositions and the band’s eclectic choice of covers. The album was recorded at London’s legendary Gizzard Studios by Ed Deegan (Holly Golightly). The band truly represents the best of multi-cultural London, the members having a mix of Caribbean, French, Japanese and Spanish heritage. With a repertoire influenced by many of the great songs of the ’50s and ’60s made to sound fresh and new to modern ears, you won’t be able to help but move your feet when the Cumberland Three are blasting out of your speakers. The King howls like Screaming Jay Hawkins with Bo Diddley chasing his coat-tail whilst Andre Williams tries to offer up some of his bacon fat, and the Trashmen do the Surfin’ Bird behind him. This is a man that never stops shakin’ and twistin’ and groovin’. The Cumberland Three (former members of punk rock bands, including The Parkinsons) rock up a storm with their own branded mix of vintage rockabilly, desperate rock ’n’ roll and stomping soul, with fire, energy, gusto and, above all, fun!

“Leaving you spellbound in its androgynous vocal delivery, Spider King’s Animals is a haunting children’s march that paralyses me with each listen”
                                                                      Cedric Bixler Zavala (Mars Volta/Antemasque)

An unknown pleasure torn out of Manchester’s lost DIY manual, this overqualified / underexposed post-punk pop pillar cast an almost invisible undetected web across the history of Manchester’s inner-city music scene which has trapped body parts of The Mothmen, Martin Hannett, Gerry And The Holograms, John Cooper Clarke, The Blue Orchids, Naffi Sandwich (The Naffis) and The Fates in its glue.

As a central mast to 1970s / 80s Manchester’s “deserted” DIY era, spanning angular jazz funk, punk and sarcastic synth pop, Spider King has also played huge parts in Manchester’s honorary adoption of The Velvet Underground’s Nico (as her lead guitarist), fronted Martin Hannett’s first ever band and inhabits a key roll in the careers of Sad Cafe, Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias, Paul Young and AC/DC’s Mancunian debut. With dozens of self-penned songs, unreleased demos and two of the best collectable Manc punk funk 45s to grace collectors want lists it’s almost unbelievable (almost tragic) that Mike King never released a full length album… until now.

Shot To Pieces is one of the most elusive jagged pieces of the North West’s punk funk puzzle. Recorded sporadically between 1979 and 1983 with a cast of characters from the Rabid/Absurd label family, such as behind the scenes synth wielder John Scott from Gerry And The Holograms, and producers like Laurie Latham (The Blockheads) it’s plain to see why 2016′s current music climate is the perfect time for the Spider King’s lost music to resurface. Commonly recognised by stalwarts of the era’s mutating punk/alt/indie genre as “the one that got away”, Spider King is the archetypal artist’s artist as well as the outsider’s outsider and the hardest working man in no-business who is now attracting a whole new audience of champions from bloggers, vinyl nerds and well respected contemporary musicians with his appearances on mix-tapes and various artist compilations. On hearing this essential release you could argue that these lost “spider-grams” are more relevant now than they were when those arachnophobic A&R men shooed him away over 3 decades ago. For those who ain’t afraid to get bitten say hello to the Spider King.

Here comes Emotional Rescue and Konduko's last in their series of Noel Williams/King Sporty reissues, this time looking at later electro productions and the hip-hop/boogie influenced 'Sun Country'. Vocals and co-production come from Williams' long-time partner Betty Wright and as well as a vocal and instrumental mix there's a longform remix by Bay Area disco dub stalwarts, 40 Thieves.

By this point in his career, the godfather of Miami Bass had travelled a long way from his Jamaican roots in reggae and soul, paying homage to the warm climbs of the Sunshine State and laying down a much copied template using the TR-808 drum machine create the electronic emulations of the breakbeat, claps accenting the backbeat and trademark low frequencies shaking the floorboards. The instrumental stretches the arrangement, emphasising the interplay between electronics, bass, vocal samples, scratching and fx, the voice transformed into a percussive element in its own right. The flip sees 40 Thieves flexing their understated understanding of electro funk, making for a rounded, generation-jumping package.

                                                                      TRACK LISTING

                                                                      Sun Country
                                                                      Sun Country (Instrumental)

King Sporty / The Extra Funk Factory

Fantasy - Incl. Jonny Rock Remix

The last of the Konduko series from Emotional Rescue arrives now and quite possibly it is the best of the lot from Noel Williams. His 'Fantasy' saw him work with Larry Dermer aka Der Mer on what is an effective and catchy electro jam that operates at the higher end of the tempo chart with some classic vocoder vocal action to really make it pop. Despite being released originally in 1984 this one still bangs with its emulated TR-808 beats and nagging melodies. The instrumental heightens that and then the Jonny Rock Discomix shuts down with long-form rework that shows why the DJ, editor and all-round amiable bloke is so well regarded.

                                                                      STAFF COMMENTS

King Sporty is something of a chameleonic artists, not that many people know. He started out int he 70s making reggae and soul 7"s, then moved into disco, boogie, hip-hop and electro 12"s during the 80s, and then when house music hit in the 90s he evolved once more. This new drop from Emotional Rescue takes a tune from that late era. 'Computer Music' is four to the floor with electro influences and a lazy break that pull you in deep. Far-sighted chords bring a serene sense of cosmic majesty while a filtered vocal adds space age vibes. A dub is included as well as the Universal Cave Discomix by the Philadelphia DJ and production crew. A retro-future EP indeed

"Computer Age" definitely lands in the electro category, but retains all the soul and human touches that would become familiar with this pivotal producer.

In those days it moved away from reggae, disco and boogie towards an enduring electro sound that had a vast and lasting impact on the Miami scene. The biggest tune from that time was when Noel Williams linked with local songwriter Lawrence Dermer aka Der Mer for the track reissued here. 'Fall Out' soon became a hit with its driving electro-funk rhythms. The original sits next to the later Fresh '86" mix as well as a NAD disco mix from Dan Tyler, best known as one of the Idjut Boys. It's an irresistible package of body-popping electro with hooks for days.

The second 7" in the Konduko series reissues this mega-rarity, Noel Williams aka King Sporty's own version of Bob Marley's Concrete Jungle. The connection between Marley and Williams was long-standing, both living in the tenements of West Kingston and gaining their musical foundations as part of the Studio One, that would reach fruition when they later co-wrote Buffalo Soldier together.

Clement Dodd's organisation was more than a label, running a sound system, studio, pressing plant and its own distribution. As Deejay on the system and later releasing his debut single on the label, William's learnt his craft, taking this knowledge to Miami and replicating much - expanding the Konduko label to encompass studio, plant and distribution.

First recorded with Lee Perry, Marley's 1971 original was famously rerecorded for The Wailers move to Island Records and their 1973 album, Catch A Fire. Here, a rare Williams' vocal is backed with horns atop a reggae-funk groove. The songs message of struggle is universal and everlasting, even with a touch of Miami swing.

This is backed by Young Girl, a single in its own right, from the same period. A rocksteady, breakbeat shuffle bely the songs roots in late 60s soul, with a powerful counterpoint vocal from wife and partner, Betty Wright. A collector's item itself, together they are essential.

                                                                      STAFF COMMENTS

And so nice to see his pre-disco evolution from Jamaica, to Miami and with more reggae focussed stylings from what would flavour his later discography. The Bob Marley and Lee Perry connection also makes these two 7"s highly desirable.

Recorded at the same time as the multi-platinum albums Dr. Dre - "2001" and Eminem - "The Slim Shady LP", "Thy Kingdom Come" features guest appearances by Dr. Dre, MC Ren (N.W.A.), DJ Quik, Too $hort, NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal, Ice-T, Kool G Rap, Dawn Robinson (En Vogue, Lucy Pearl) to name a few. When Dr. Dre departed from Death Row Records to form Aftermath Entertainment in 1996, one of the rappers he intended to build his new label with was veteran Compton rapper King Tee. Tee appeared on "Dr. Dre presents... The Aftermath" (and soon hit the studio to record an album. But the album release didn't happen, and finally here is the long-awaited official release.

Infrasonics hits heavy with the next 12” in their highly collectable split EP series. As FACTmagazine put it, “Totally pumped, furious work outs from Kingthing and Jamie Grind herald their first release of 2012, showcasing a high-octane mixture of snarling club sounds as aggressively funky as any Swamp 81 or Fade To Mind material”. New signing Kingthing comes correct with two hybrid numbers that build on the garage swagger of his previous outings with a new found focus and intensity and a broadened sonic palette that wraps analogue-style synths within tight digital edits. The intro to ‘Waking Up’ is rhythmic in fits and starts, as vocal hooks and triplet percussive stabs reciprocate before gradually settling, building a continuity of meter with rising pads leading to a crescendo that drops into a killer, technoid resolution of jacking monosynth leads and arpeggios over a slamming kick. ‘Cold Diss’ bangs hard from the off. Distilled juke and booty influences seep through the interplay of the vocal phonemes and pitched sub, but the vibe here is original. The accompanying synth, that briefly introduces the track before later resurfacing to guide, has a cold clinical precision and resonance to it that could be forged by SND or Alva Noto. The context is very different though and the resulting symbiosis is a satisfying romp for the peak hour dance Jamie Grind turned the head of many a player with his first drop for Infrasonics on the ‘Infra12003 EP’ he shared with Gon. Equally, his second pulls no punches. Sonically situated somewhere between Leeds and L.A. he turns in two tracks that weave summer vibes around a propulsive bassline rhythms. ‘For You’ builds around cut up vocal hooks and woozy stabs before resolving into an infectious, driving 4/4 groove. It breaks briefly, breezy chords switching the atmosphere, before settling back into the bassline groove. ‘We Still Play 140’ is a different proposition, constructed around an off kilter piano / stab combo and skittering percussion. It’s unfamiliar territory but Jamie’s ability to settle the listener as the bass and strings give fullness and urgency to the mix and play with the tension and release is a testament to his finely tuned pop sensibilities - man knows how to arrange for devastating impact.

In 1974 Edwards left Jamaica to reside in the UK and through his strong connections with such reggae luminaries as Joe Gibbs, Lee Perry and King Tubby began to travel back and forth between London and Kingston (JA) to bring back recordings to issue on his Fay Music label here in the UK. In 1974 he released this seminal dub set, which is now considered a classic early Tubby’s dub album. A musical, tuneful and seriously heavy dubwise set with Vin Gordon’s unique trombone lines well to the fore. Essential dub.

His electronic genius grew from working and fixing radios and TV sets. A natural progression led to working with amplifiers, and starting his own sound system, ‘Tubby’s Home Town Hi-Fi’. A very competitive games in the late 60’s - You were only as good as the EXCLUSIVE records you played. Tubby discovered during his time cutting discs for Duke Reid’s Treasure Isle set up, that by dropping vocals/instruments in and out of the backing tracks, you could invent new versions of existing old tunes. These early versions tried and tested on his sound system went down so well that he invested in a four track mixing console with delay echo effects, sliders and phasing units and so began King Tubby’s ‘Studio Of Dub’ at 18 Drummlie Avenue, Kinston 11 , Jamaica...his home. This is where all the producers would bring their tracks for Tubby to put his magic over. Most tracks that came out in Jamaica from here on in would carry a ‘Version’ on it’s B- Side more than likely a Tubby Dub. One of the producers who used him the most was Bunny Striker Lee, who’s labels Jackpot, Justice and Attack all carried Tubby’s mixes/versions on their flip sides. This collection, taken from original master tapes, showcases tracks you may know, but not in this radical form. So sit back and enjoy the dub master at work.

Tubby and producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee are intertwined in the birth of dub music, going on to release the first albums of this new musical genre. Tubby’s vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny’s vast catalogue of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard; remixes and version cuts to an existing vocal tune.

King Tubby and Producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee are intertwined in the birth of dub music. Tubby’s vast knowledge of electronics and Bunny’s vast catalogue of rhythms would lay the foundations of what today is taken as a standard - remix and version cuts to an existing vocal tune. Dynamic Sounds upgraded to 16 track recording in 1972 and Tubby purchased, again with the help of a deal brokered by Bunny Lee, the old four track equipment and the MCI console from their Studio B. The four tracks now gave him far wider scope to work with and he began to create a new musical form where the bass and drum parts were brought up while the faders allowed Tubby to ease the vocal and rhythm in and out of the mix. It was only a matter of time before Tubby’s dubplate experiments began to make it on to vinyl and the first ever long playing King Tubby releases would feature a collection of his mixes to a selection of Striker's rhythms. So please sit back and enjoy this historic set of sounds.

King Tuff’s new record is called ‘Black Moon Spell’. It was produced and recorded by Bobby Harlow at Studio B in Los Angeles, California, in the hot winter of 2014.

There were many strange occurrences during the recording session - Dracula landlords, flashes of mysterious light, haunted microphones, songs that mixed themselves, demonic vortexes swirling in coffee cups, etc. Under the ‘Black Moon Spell’ you may experience euphoria, demented visions, wet dreams, bouts of backwards laughter, and dazed confusion resulting in primordial dancing.

Los Angeles, full of its screaming coyotes and creeping helicopters, surely slathered its sexy, twisted, hairy, polluted spirit all over ‘Black Moon Spell’.

Listen to ‘Black Moon Spell’ and give your ears what they’ve been begging for all year; a heavily weird, heavenly dark, hysterically magical rock & roll sexperience.

There are times in our life when we feel magic in the air. When new love arrives, or we find ourselves lost in a moment of creation with others who share our vision. A sense that: this is who I want to be. This is what I want to share. It’s a fleeting feeling and one that Kyle Thomas, the singer-songwriter who records and performs as King Tuff, found himself longing for in the spring of 2020.

But knowing he couldn’t simply recreate this time in his life at will, Thomas—who hails from Brattleboro, Vermont—set out to write a love letter to those cherished moments of inspiration and to the small town that formed him. The one where he first nurtured his songwriting impulses, bouncing ideas off other like-minded artists. The kind of place where the changing of the seasons always delivered a sense of perspective and fresh artistic inspiration. Where he felt a deeper connection with nature and sense of community that had once been so close at hand. And so, Thomas seized upon his memories, creating what he calls “an album about love and nature and youth.”

The result is Smalltown Stardust, a spiritual, tender and ultimately joyous record that might come as a shock to those with only a passing knowledge of the artist’s back catalog. On Smalltown Stardust, Thomas takes us on his journey to a place where past and present collide, where he can be a dreamer in love with all that he sees. References to his Brattleboro upbringing abound, but at the core of Smalltown Stardust is Thomas’s desire to commune with nature on a spiritual level. Images of the natural world, from blizzards to green mountains to cloudy days, fill the songs. “I consider nature to be my religion,” he explains, and Smalltown Stardust is nothing if not a spiritual exploration.

While so much of Smalltown Stardust invokes idealized traces and places of Thomas’s past, the album’s recording process made his communal vision a reality. Thomas’s Los Angeles home in 2020 formed a micro-scene of sorts, with housemates Meg Duffy (Hand Habits) and Sasami Ashworth recording their own heralded albums (2021’s Fun House and 2022’s Squeeze, respectively) at the same time. A shared spirit dominated an era spent largely on the premises, with Thomas serving as engineer and contributor to both records, and Ashworth working as co-producer on Smalltown Stardust. Ashworth’s contributions are vital to the album: she co-wrote a majority of the record and contributed vocals, arrangements, and instrumentation to each song.

In the end, Smalltown Stardust is not merely a nostalgia trip. Thomas not only conjured a special time in his life, he found new inspiration, surrounded by collaborators and a sense of love and wonder for nature. If the first King Tuff record was content to merely state Thomas was no longer dead, Smalltown Stardust is a paean to what that life means. A statement of belief and a hymnal to the magic still to behold all around us.

There are snippets of uplifting synths and pristine production but it never sounds less that thoroughly organic and wholly absorbing.

When asked to describe the title track from his new record, Kyle Thomas—aka King Tuff—takes a deep breath. “It’s a song about hitting rock bottom,” he says. “I didn't even know what I wanted to do anymore, but I still had this urge, like there was this possibility of something else I could be doing… and then I just followed that possibility. To me, that’s what songwriting, and art in general, is about. You’re chasing something. ‘The Other’ is basically where songs come from. It’s the hidden world. It’s the invisible hand that guides you whenever you make something. It’s the thing I had to rediscover to bring me back to making music again in a way that felt true and good.” After years of non-stop touring, culminating in a particularly arduous stint in support of 2014’s Black Moon Spell, Thomas found himself back in Los Angeles experiencing the flipside of the ultimate rock and roll cliche. “I had literally been on tour for years,” recalls Thomas. “It was exhausting, physically and mentally. I’m essentially playing this character of King Tuff, this crazy party monster, and I don’t even drink or do drugs. It had become a weird persona, which people seemed to want from me, but it was no longer me. I just felt like it had gotten away from me.” The ten tracks that make up The Other represent a kind of psychic evolution for King Tuff. No less hooky than previous records, the new songs ditch the goofy rock-and-roll bacchanalia narratives of earlier records in favor of expansive arrangements, a diversity of instrumentation, and lyrics that straddle the fence between painful ruminations and a childlike, creative energy untarnished by cynicism. The soulful and cosmic new direction is apparent from the album’s first moments: introduced by the gentle ringing of a chime, acoustic guitar, and warm organ tones, “The Other” is a narrative of redemption born of creativity. As Thomas sings about being stuck in traffic, directionless, with no particular reason to be alive, he hears the call of “the other,” a kind of siren song that, instead of leading towards destruction, draws the narrator towards a creative rebirth. Elsewhere, tracks like “Thru the Cracks” and “Psycho Star” balance psychedelia with day-glo pop hooks. “The universe is probably an illusion, but isn’t it so beautifully bizarre?” he asks on “Psycho Star,” providing one of the record’s central tenets. At a time when everything in the world feels so deeply spoiled and the concept of making meaning out of the void seems both pointless and impossible, why not try? Thomas self-produced the record, as he did his 2007 debut, Was Dead, but on a far grander scale. He recorded it at The Pine Room, the home studio Thomas built to work on the record, and playing every instrument aside from drums and saxophone. He pulled Shawn Everett (War On Drugs, Alabama Shakes) in to assist with the mixing process. While it would be easy to think of The Other as a kind of reinvention for King Tuff, Thomas views the entire experience of the record as a kind of reset that’s not totally removed from what he’s done in the past. “I can’t help but sound like me,” he says. “It’s just that this time I let the songs lead me where they wanted to go, instead of trying to push them into a certain zone. King Tuff was always just supposed to be me. When I started doing this as a teenager, it was whatever I wanted it to be. King Tuff was never supposed to be just one thing. It was supposed to be everything.”

Simmering, heartfelt and absolutely worth every minute. Think the honest acoustic innocence of Daniel Johnston with Jeff Tweedy's perfectly emotive production, and you're somewhere close.

The music of Arthur Russell defies classification. Across a twenty-year career he created a body of work which ranged from his pioneering compositions as part of the New York avant-garde alongside artists including Philip Glass and Allen Ginsberg, to his genre-expanding disco and art pop productions, to his posthumously released folk songs. Travels Over Feeling is the result of extensive research by author Richard King, curating the ephemera and documentation found in both Arthur's and other private archives, and consists of hand-written scores, lyrics, photos, letters and drawings.

Throughout, King has conducted wide-ranging original interviews with Arthur's collaborators, contemporaries, family and friends. The resulting book reveals a true picture of one of the most distinctive artists of the last fifty years.

The Tastemaker charts the singular life of a man who has been at the beating heart of music's most iconic moments for over sixty years. Leaving school and starting his career at Decca Records in 1958 at the age of sixteen, Tony King would soon find himself becoming close friends with Elton John, rekindling John Lennon and Yoko Ono's relationship, mediating a quarrelsome Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and spending time with Freddie Mercury in his final days - a far cry from his childhood days in Eastbourne. Living in an era of seismic social, technological and cultural transformation, King experienced these defining moments as a stalwart in London and New York's gay scenes.

Alongside his heady life in showbusiness, he was witness to the AIDS crisis and its devastating consequences: the death of family, the death of friends and the stultifying weight of responsibility in being called upon to hold things together. At once profound and suffused with Tony King's disarming warmth and unparalleled charisma, The Tastemaker paints an intimate portrait of a music legend and captures the unpredictable world he stamped his indelible mark upon.

As the title suggests, it’s a document of one of this era’s great rock & roll bands cutting loose, trying new things, and, yes, having some fun. Recorded at Dark Horse studio and produced with new collaborator Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles, Florence + the Machine) the album sees a new side of Kings of Leon. On the new album, the band harkens back to their gritty origins while simultaneously finding new gears. It’s the sound of a band unified in vision and purpose, freed from any expectations, and the album the band says they’ve always wanted to make.

Something to do with youthful exhuberance, perhaps, but the similarities end there. Here was a preacher raised band of (literal!) brothers, hell bent on bringing Southern, good-time rock'n'roll back onto the radio and into our hearts. They had the bar-band groove, a cool as you like attitude, but most importantly some massive pop songs to help them stake their claim. It was thrilling debut.

About the group's sound, Walter Scott Award winning author of The Gallows Pole and The Offing, Benjamin Myers said, "Kings of the Fucking Sea make me want to mask-up, topple statues, carve Iggy’s face in Mount Rushmore, storm the White House and paint it black. Their noise hits on a visceral level and will scorch the edges of your very DNA. if MC5 and Black Sabbath had a baby it would be a biological miracle, and they would call it Kings of the Fucking Sea. Troubled times need troubling music: here it is, a live soundtrack to a crumbling empire. Totally righteous."

Three long years have passed since the band released their first EP. Norway’s friendliest band serves critically acclaimed retro prog and catchy stoner rock. Kings of the Valley plays music characterized by intense guitar riffs, melodic bass, pulsating drums and vocal harmonies. The band’s expression has strong common features with seventies rock, psychedelic rock, good old prog rock and stylish stoner rock. Like the EP from 2017, the album was mainly recorded in Brygga Studio in Trondheim by super technician and wonder producer Pål Brekkås and keyboardist and guitar hero Øystein Megård. The gorgeous album cover is designed by art legend Robert Høyem. In 2017, The Wilhelmsen said “Holy cow, these guys can play!”. Ida Jenshus recently stated that Kings of the Valley is “by far the most pleasant rock band in Norway!”, while the drummer’s mother says: “Nice music, but I think it’s a bit noisy.” The debut Kings of the Valley is comprised of a handful of shorter and several lengthy tracks which move thematically and genre-wise within 60s and 70s prog-rock, psychedelic rock and 90s stoner rock in the same vein as King Crimson, Sleep and Motorpsycho. Kings of the Valley is out September 18th on Wonderful & Strange Records and available in Europe from Stickman Records.

                                                                                                                        Born In Africa

High Fashion land at Piccadilly with a pair of Afro-disco worldies here, plucked from the archives of Cameroon's groove master Charly Kingson. Though less known than Tony Allen or Fela Kuti, Charly shook the continent up in 1978 when he dropped the mighty "Born In Africa" LP, a funk-full, disco tinged bomb which packs way more power than your usual tropical tackle. "Born In Africa" itself is shuffling, swaying Afro-disco smasher for the dancefloor, and this original 1982 remix from legendary Dutch percussionist Eddie Conard squeezes every bit of body moving magic from the unstoppable groove. So far so good, but it's the squelching, stomping force of futuristic dancefloor smasher "Nimele Bolo" that's got the real heads spinning! Cut from a similar cloth to those classics from Connie Case and Coach House Rhythm Section, this combo of limber, lysergic synth squelch, disco 4/4 and the full funk force of wah guitar, hot horns and killer clav causes maximum destruction on a big rig. Chuck in the extra energy of a chanted / shouted vocal and you're well on your way to a no holds barred system smasher! Released in 1982 on Ariola/Fleet, but also pressed on the original Fleet label. The latter (remarkably with identical catalog-number) never saw daylight. All in all, this hard to find 12” (at Discogs copies on the Ariola/Fleet label go for around 250 euro) was recently re-discovered, and now you can finally enjoy it again.

Everybody's in Show-Biz is a double album with one record devoted to stories from the road and another devoted to songs from the road. The album includes Ray Davies’ trademark wit, especially in the woozy beginning of "Unreal Reality" or the tongue-in-cheek "Look a Little on the Sunnyside" and the upbeat classic ‘Supersonic Rocket Ship’. Aside from the wit, there's a sense of melancholy running throughout the record, most notably on the album's hit track "Celluloid Heroes."

Expertly recreated and retouched original artwork with gatefold sleeve. All audio has been produced by Ray Davies and remastered by Kinks experts Kevin Gray at Cohearant. The 1CD standalone includes x1 brand new Ray Davies remix, ‘’Celluloid Heroes’’ and indepth sleeve notes with band quotes and photos.

Face to Face is one of the finest collections of pop songs released during the '60s. Conceived as a loose concept album, Face to Face sees Ray Davies' fascination with English class and social structures flourish, as he creates a number of vivid character portraits.

Davies' growth as a lyricist coincided with the Kinks' musical growth. Face to Face is filled with wonderful moments, whether it's the mocking Hawaiian guitars of the rocker "Holiday in Waikiki," the droning Eastern touches of "Fancy," the music hall shuffle of "Dandy," or the lazily rolling "Sunny Afternoon."

These examples only scratches the surface of the riches of Face to Face, which offers other classics like "Rosy Won't You Please Come Home," "Party Line," "Too Much on My Mind," "Rainy Day in June," and "Most Exclusive Residence for Sale," making the record one of the most distinctive and accomplished albums of its time.

The album is a huge step forward in songwriting capabilities for Ray Davies and the band. They secured themselves a number one spot on the UK singles chart with "Tired of Waiting for You", the full album charted at #3.

Originally released by Pye in the UK on 5 March 1965 and reissue now by BMG on heavy weight black vinyl in 2022. The US release had a rearranged track listing and repackaged cover. Several tracks were removed, and the single "Set Me Free", released two months after the UK issue of Kinda Kinks, was unique to the album's US release. In the UK, the album was only released in mono; no stereo mix was made.

The album also includes cult favourite tracks ‘Look For Me Baby’, ‘Come On Now’, ‘Something Better Beginning’ as well as "Nothin' in This World Can Stop Me Worryin' 'Bout That Girl" which put them right in the front of the British Invasion pack for seriousness and complexity, out in front of where the Beatles or almost any of the competition were in early 1965, but it didn't stop them from switching gears to the bluesy "Naggin' Woman."

A concept album, it is a satirical appraisal of the music industry, including song publishers, unions, the press, accountants, business managers, and life on the road. This classic album appeared during a transitional period for the Kinks, and was a critical and commercial success.

50th anniversary LP release featuring the newly remastered original stereo album on black heavyweight vinyl in a carefully restored and replicated original gatefold sleeve. This period’s first Kinks album, Muswell Hillbillies, is for many people their best of all. It conversely looked back on Ray and Dave Davies’ London roots, telling tales of working-class families migrating from the war-torn and redevelopment-ravaged inner city to the strange, leafy suburbs of North London.

Expertly recreated and retouched original artwork with gatefold sleeve. All audio has been produced by Ray Davies and mastered by Kinks expert Tony Cousins at Metropolis studios.

The 1CD standalone includes x3 new Ray Davies remixes ‘20th Century Man’, ‘Acute Schizophrenia Paranoia Blues’ & ‘Travelling With My Band’. Brand new sleeve notes with band quotes and photos.

Percy is a 1971 film soundtrack for the British comedy film Percy performed by the English rock group the Kinks with additional orchestral arrangements conducted by Stanley Myers. It was released as the band’s ninth official studio album.

Davies wrote some hauntingly beautiful ballads and some solid blues and country as well for the forward thinking cult film. Although virtually unseen in the United States, it was still popular enough to yield a sequel (Percy's Progress), but its real impact came from its soundtrack.

‘God's Children’ and ‘Animals in the Zoo’ have turned up on some career anthologies, but there's a lot more to Percy than those two tracks. ‘Completely’ is as fine a slow blues as the band ever recorded, with a sizzling performance by Dave Davies, and "Dreams" is a solid rocker, even up alongside "Animals in the Zoo."

These offerings focus on more nostalgic and sentimental themes, retreating from the psychedelic and mod posturings that had dominated the rock world. Something Else sounds like nothing else from 1967.

The Kinks change gear on this album, preferring acoustic ballads, music hall numbers, and tempered R&B to full-out guitar attacks. Part of the album's power lies in its calm music, since it provides an elegant support for Davies' character portraits and vignettes. From the martial stomp of "David Watts" to the lovely, shimmering "Waterloo Sunset," there's not a weak song on the record.

And just as impressive is the emergence of Dave Davies as a songwriter. His Dylanesque "Death of a Clown" and bluesy rocker "Love Me Till the Sun Shines" hold their own against Ray's masterpieces, and help make Something Else the endlessly fascinating album that it is.

Their multi-award winning, legendary front man Sir Ray Davies is one of the greatest all-time British songwriters.

The Kinks came into their own as album artists on The Kink Kontroversy. Ray Davies fully matured as a songwriter on this title, which bridges their raw early British Invasion sound with more sophisticated lyrics and thoughtful production.

Full of powerful ravers like the hit "Til the End of the Day" (utilizing yet another "You Really Got Me"-type riff) and the abrasive, Dave Davies-sung cover of "Milk Cow Blues," but tracks like the calypso pastiche "I'm on an Island," where Ray sings of isolation with a forlorn yet merry bite, were far more indicative of their future direction.

Other great songs on this underrated album include the uneasy nostalgia of "Where Have All the Good Times Gone?," the plaintive, almost fatalistic ballads "Ring the Bells" and "The World Keeps Going Round," and the Dave Davies-sung declaration of independence "I Am Free."

Kinks is the debut album by English rock band the Kinks, released in 1964. This iconic album perfectly mixes blues rock, rockabilly, and the classic Merseybeat of the 1960s that mixes R&B, skiffle, rock, and the likes.

If you’re looking for that British Invasion sound, Kinks is a perfect beginning. The album was recorded in October 1964. The bands cover of “Long Tall Sally” soared the charts and has the distinction of being The Kinks’s first ever single.

The bands second success from the album is the massively popular and best-selling summertime single, “You Really Got Me”. It’s crunchy distorted guitar riffs, chimey solo, pounding uptempo beat and soaring harmonies, defined an entire genre.

This album is the first chapter of one of the most iconic bands in the world and a must have for any fans collection.
