Pixies

Hear Me Out / Mambo Sun

‘Hear Me Out’ represents the first new material from Pixies since the release of their seventh album ‘Beneath The Eyrie’ last year. The song offers a brighter contrast to the previous record’s foreboding ambience, with bassist Paz Lenchantin’s honeyed, hypnotic vocals delivering a message that has grown in relevance since it was written. Delivering melody and visceral power in equal measure, it captures the PIXIES’ classic style, and is elevated with a spaghetti western-style guitar motif courtesy of Joey Santiago.

The song was written by frontman Black Francis and Lenchantin at Dreamland Studios during sessions for ‘Beneath The Eyrie’, with production courtesy of the Grammy-nominated Tom Dalgety (Royal Blood, Ghost, etc.).

“‘Hear Me Out’ is about things not turning out the way we hoped, but knowing that it’s going to be ok regardless,” says Lenchantin. “Black started the melody phrases on an old organ. I loved it right away, so he asked me to take a pass at the lyrics. The song has an evocative melody that inspired the lyrics to come out straight away.”

Joey Santiago added, “Paz sounds like she’s talking to a guy with deaf ears. I did a western style riff at the end of verses, which was like giving her a gun so the dude would pay attention.”

It’s been ten years since Groove Armada released their landmark album ‘Black Light’. They’ve been active in recent years - DJ sets, select live shows and the ‘Twenty One Years’ compilation - yet the prospect of a new album seemed unlikely. That all changed when they stepped out at the Boomtown Festival and saw the reaction from long-term fans and newcomers alike.

Initially they planned to complete some half-finished ideas that remained from the ‘Black Light’ era. Elements of the title track and ‘Holding Strong’ both remain from that original plan, but ultimately their creative connection resulted in their upcoming seventh album.

As always with GA it’s a melting pot of styles, but in contrast to the guitar laden sound of their last album, the Grammy nominated “Black Light”, the uniting stylistic thread here lies somewhere between Hall & Oates , Prince and Roxy Music.

‘Edge of The Horizon’ features a whole range of vocal talent, from friends and neighbours to the godfather of UK Garage Todd Edwards who appears on ‘Lover 4 Now’, out today. A summer anthem of positivity, love and togetherness, Todd’s signature vocals shimmer above a straight-ahead Italo-disco groove.  It was made with a moment in mind. “Ibiza. Poolside at Pikes, that time of the evening when day becomes night, and anything seems possible”.

Groove Armada’s flair for blending electro elements with the energy of a live band remains at the heart of the record. In fact, the foundations of this album are the memories of the 15 years they spent on the road playing dance music live. The legendary GA tour bus parties had a strong dose of yacht rock on the playlist. ‘Holding Strong’ is an unashamed salute to the best of those searing emotional highs of the 80s. NYCs She Keeps Bees heads up the title track, born out of a groove left on the cutting room floor during the chaotic Black Light sessions.

Chicago house music icon Paris Brightledge deploys his iconic tones on two tracks, and Empire of The Sun and Pnau’s Nick Littlemore features on the lockdown anthem, ‘Get Out on the Dancefloor’.

    STAFF COMMENTS

says: Downbeat darlings Groove Armada serve up a late career treat for long standing fans of this iconic act. Featuring some excellent collaborations it finds the pair in a spell of relaxed creativity, eclectic as ever but with a warming, heart-felt message. Full marks!

    Suicide

Suicide - Art Of The Album Edition

By the Summer of 1969 the US hippie dream lay in tatters but the cultural influence exerted by New York City would echo loudly through the decades that followed and no louder than it did with the incendiary electronic NYC duo, Suicide, who came to notoriety nearly a decade later. If dismissive at first, the music press have gone through something of a dramatic U-turn in more recent years with many mainstream publications now regarding Suicide’s 1977 debut as a stone cold classic.

It sits at #39 in Pitchfork’s Top 100 Albums Of The 1970s; it placed at #441 in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time; and reached #236 in NME’s The 500 Greatest Albums Of All Time.

Four decades later, we are only just now counting the positive cost of their influence across genres such as techno, noise, electro clash, goth, synth pop, psych and industrial. However, a sense of their vital impact can be discerned from the number of cover versions of Suicide tracks there are delivered by the likes of Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen, Peaches and R.E.M. Elsewhere they have had been praised widely by Nick Cave, Jim Thirlwell and M.I.A. and count Jason Pierce (Spacemen 3/ Spiritualized), Lydia Lunch, Nik Void of Factory Floor and Savages as fans. This Art Of The Album edition of Suicide sees the record remastered and presented in its original form and packaging, with in-depth liner notes covering the context, craft, impact and legacy of the album.

      STAFF COMMENTS

says: Still sounding as fresh as the day it was released back in 1977, this New York proto punk / industrial / avant-noise album finally gets the reissue it really deserves. “Remastered and presented in its original form and packaging, with in-depth liner notes covering the context, craft, impact and legacy of the album.”

Cabbage have finally released their highly anticipated debut album, following on from a trio of EP's, released under the delightfully tactful 'Young, Dumb & Full Of...' (Rum, I assume.)

We start off with the thrashing garage rock of 'Preach To The Converted' with twanging distorted guitar and the sort of snarling vocals you could imagine being venemously spat from the edge of the stage before launching into the fuzzy off-kilter rock of Arms of Pleonexia, reminiscent of a younger Ty Segall swagging around the stage before a baying croud after one too many bottles of corner-shop white lightning. Things continue at this frenetic pace with 'Molotov Alcopop' providing a bit of nuanced rhythm before the gothic rock of 'Disinfect Us' suggests a more mature suite of influences, from the militant march and languid blues overtones of early White Stripes.

Further on, we get syncopated guitars over a meandering drum machine on the brilliantly swaying 'Pendurabo' and jangling hazy indie, topped with a curiously (but effectively) distorted vocal affectation over the top.

Brilliantly varied, but held together with a persistent narrative thread, 'Nihilistic Glamour Shots' lives up to the hype of the earlier 3 EP's, with a willingnes to experiment but a knowing nod to all of their numerous influences.

        STAFF COMMENTS

says: Thrashing garage rock, thudding post-punk and jagged riffage all round, Cabbage manage to surpass their excellent musical form with a well-heeled and cleverly written debut.
