NAO

And Then Life Was Beautiful

While Nao's previous project propelled the singer-songwriter into a new stratosphere with its cosmic, coming-of-age themes, the songstress is now entering a brand new chapter with ‘And Then Life Was Beautiful’ - where ‘Saturn’ untangled the knots of late twenties soul-searching, ‘And Then Life Was Beautiful’ goes a step further by setting out a clarified sense of purpose. Now a mother of a young daughter, NAO is more confident in herself and her voice than ever. A pandemic album, written and recorded throughout never-ending lockdowns, the project celebrates life’s ups and downs, reaching out a hand to guide listeners through what hurdles may confront them next. It includes previously released tracks ‘Antidode’, featuring Nigerian superstar Adekunle Gold, ‘Woman’, featuring Lianne La Havas, which she recorded with her new-born daughter strapped lovingly to her chest, as well as ‘Messy Love’, a stunning offering loaded with strummed guitar grooves and drum rhythms rooted in 90s R&B.

Other notable stand-out tracks include ‘Wait’, a stripped-back track which takes an intimate look at how you make mistakes to develop a relationship, and ‘Postcards’, highlighting a gorgeous vocal interplay of NAO and serpentwithfeet, who features alongside her on the track. For ‘Good Luck’, R&B crooner Lucky Daye jumped on board.

She says: “Life isn’t perfect; we still go through ups and downs, but it can be beautiful as a whole. I do think it’s a hopeful album, in an honest way – it’s not shiny or all ‘isn’t this great!’ and ‘party party party.’ But it’s hopeful in that through every rough patch, every dark patch or struggle we always come out again. That’s what life is. You keep going. But most of all you try and step into a place of gratitude so that you can see life in all of its beauty.”

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A silky smooth mix between soaring synth pop and grooving R&B, wonderfully bringing together Nao's gorgeous vocals and a distinctly modern mash-up of styles into a cohesive and jubilant whole.

    Manic Street Preachers

    The Ultra Vivid Lament

‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is the 14th studio album from Manic Street Preachers. It is both reflection and reaction; a record that gazes in isolation across a cluttered room, fogged by often painful memories, to focus on an open window framing a gleaming vista of land melting into sea and endless sky.

Musically, ‘The Ultra Vivid Lament’ is inspired by a formative years record box (ABBA, post-Eno Roxy, the Bunnymen, Fables-era REM, Lodger) though the end result could only be the unique union of James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire and Sean Moore, collectively one of the UK’s most consistently brilliant rock’n’roll bands for over three decades.

      Prince

      Welcome 2 America

Recorded in the spring of 2010 and then mysteriously abandoned by Prince before its release, the statement album Welcome 2 America documents Prince’s concerns, hopes, and visions for a shifting society, presciently foreshadowing an era of political division, disinformation, and a renewed fight for racial justice. The album features some of Prince’s only studio collaborations with the bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, drummer Chris Coleman, and engineer Jason Agel, with additional contributions from New Power Generation singers Shelby J, Liv Warfield, and Elisa Fiorillo and keyboardist Morris Hayes, who Prince also recruited to co-produce the album.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: It really is a testament to the output of the purple one himself that THIS absolute stunner got left on the cutting room floor. Political spoken word, undeniable groove and impeccable instrumental performances from all involved lead to one of the greatest albums he's put out for a LONG time.

        Bobby Gillespie & Jehnny Beth

        Utopian Ashes

Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie, alongside solo artist and Savages vocalist Jehnny Beth, presents this stunning debut solo project collection - exploring loss, miscommunication and emotional inarticulacy that a married couple experience as they realise that their relationship is breaking down.

‘Utopian Ashes’ draws on the tradition of country soul classics, such as Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris’s ‘Grievous Angel’ and George Jones and Tammy Wynette’s ‘We Go Together’, to deal with the heavy realities of love turning sour. It’s an album for people who have dealt with the inevitable sadness that comes with age and acknowledged the realities of life. There is no sweetening of the pill, but it does achieve what should be the goal of all good art: to make us feel less alone. And while it’s not autobiographical, it channels heartfelt truth from the songwriters’ own experiences.

In addition to Bobby Gillespie and Jehnny Beth, the album features Johnny Hostile (bass) alongside Primal Scream trio Andrew Innes (guitar), Martin Duffy (piano) and Darrin Mooney (drums).

          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: This collaboration sees Beth and Gillespie in absolute peak form, flitting between more upbeat balladry and thoughtful meditative orchestration but always moving towards a brilliantly inventive conclusion. The more downbeat slo-country moments are accentuated with a perfect juxtaposition of vocal talents and a keen ear for melody. Beautiful stuff.

Baddiel, Skinner & The Lightning Seeds

          Three Lions 96/98

2021 marks 25 years since Baddiel, Skinner, and Lightning Seeds brought the iconic footballing anthem ‘Three Lions’ into the world. To celebrate the anniversary, Sony Music will be releasing a one-off limited edition 7” solid red vinyl with numbered sleeves on Friday 4th June, which will feature two versions of the anthem: ‘Three Lions’ and ‘Three Lions ‘98’ .

An earworm of a track written by Ian Broudie, David Baddiel and Frank Skinner which sums up the heartache and hope of being an England fan, became an instant number one in ‘96, with England fans up and down the country singing it before, during, and after games.

In the years since its debut, the track has seen multiple releases and is the only song in existence to have become the UK number one four separate times with the same artists: two one-week stints in 1996, three straight weeks in 1998 for the remake, and again in 2018 during the World Cup held in Russia, where it made history in vaulting to number one from 24 in one week. Not just adored by England fans, ‘Three Lions’ has become a global footballing hit, topping Germany’s charts and is still frequently heard on German radio stations around the tournaments.

Letter To You is Bruce Springsteen’s new studio album with the E Street Band, and is a rock album fuelled by the band's heart-stopping, house-rocking signature sound. Bizarro - National Album Day Edition

A 'National Album Day' release - Pressed on standard Black LP Vinyl.

'Bizarro' was the second Wedding Present album, originally released in 1989. The band's first album on a major label, 'Bizarro' saw The Wedding Present toughening up rather than selling out. Toying with extremes of tempo and mood, the result was a vibrant hybrid of astringency and the band's quintessential pop euphoria.

                    The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses - National Album Day Edition

Surely this album needs no introduction or explanation?! But just in case you don’t know, this is arguably one of the best debut albums of all time, from one of the most influential bands of their generation! And if that’s not enough to tempt you, then I don’t know what is.

                      Prefab Sprout

Steve McQueen - National Album Day Edition

A 'National Album Day' release - Pressed on Clear LP Vinyl.

Alternative pop rock band Prefab Sprout formed in 1978 in Newcastle and rose to fame during the 1980s. Frontman Paddy McAloon is regularly hailed as one of the great songwriters of his generation. 'Steve McQueen' is their second album and was originally released in 1985. Smart, sophisticated and timelessly stylish, 'Steve McQueen' is somewhat of a classic, a shimmering indie / jazz-pop masterpiece sparked by Paddy McAloon's witty and inventive songwriting. One for fans of the Smiths, Everything But The Girl etc.

                        Paul Simon

Graceland - National Album Day Edition

A 'National Album Day' release - Pressed on Clear LP Vinyl.

With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.

As eclectic as any record Simon had made, it also delved into zydeco and conjunto-flavored rock & roll while marking a surprising new lyrical approach (presaged on some songs on Hearts and Bones); for the most part, Simon abandoned a linear, narrative approach to his words, instead drawing highly poetic, abstract, and satiric portraits of modern life, often charged by striking images and turns of phrase torn from the headlines or overheard in contemporary speech. An enormously successful record, Graceland became the standard against which subsequent musical experiments by major artists were measured and continues to provide rewards to its listeners and remains a pivotal listening experience for writers, artists and fans.

                                        A Tribe Called Quest

                                        Midnight Marauders - Vinyl Reissue

The third and last of the 'classic' Tribe records (preceding the addition of Jay Dee and the formation of the Ummah production team), "Midnight Marauders" sees the group at their most musically sophisticated, marrying the distinctive Tribe sound with groundbreaking sampling and adventurous rhymes. The logical evolution of the bop-influenced hooks which characterized "Low End Theory", "...Marauders" seemlessly balances jazz, soul and reggae influences with pure golden age hip hop, graduating from a cool school aesthetic to an electric jazz sound (reminiscent of fusion-era Miles Davis). Lyrically "Midnight Marauders" finds the group's abstract poetics in excellent form as usual, and Phife is miles ahead of the 'mayor-flavor' rhymes of "Can I Kick It." As per the title, the album develops the introspection of "After Hours" into a nocturnal feel which winds its way through "Midnight," the party-rock of "We Can Get Down," "Clap Your Hands" and the complex layers of "God Lives Through." No review of this LP would be complete without a moment in tribute to the majesty of the Ronnie Foster sampling "Electric Relaxation", a flawless cut which sees Q-Tip and Phife Dawg trading killer bars with effortless flow. All in all, a true classic from back in the day, which no home should be without.

This double vinyl set serves up winners from series 1 & 2 pieced together with dialogue from the show. Contains Joy Division, Cyndi Lauper and Devo - mint!

Twenty years ago Cypress Hill was on top of the world, with two chart topping albums and several number one singles. Upon its release on Halloween, "Temples of Boom" might have illustrated their total disregard for the commercial success they’d enjoyed up until that point. This album was darker. The beats were spookier. The lyrics were grim. Even the album cover had a gloomier look, which is saying a lot when looking back at Black Sunday’s cover. It seemed that instead of riding the success of their previous two platinum albums they were heading in the opposite direction, pop culture be damned. Then something strange happened: "Temples of Boom" went platinum. B-Real, Sen Dog, and Muggs had put out an album that was all about them, not the mainstream or Columbia Records, and it worked. The fans remained steadfastly open to something new.

Something to do with youthful exhuberance, perhaps, but the similarities end there. Here was a preacher raised band of (literal!) brothers, hell bent on bringing Southern, good-time rock'n'roll back onto the radio and into our hearts. They had the bar-band groove, a cool as you like attitude, but most importantly some massive pop songs to help them stake their claim. It was thrilling debut.

It’s a tense and at times harrowing collection of songs, recorded shortly before Richey James hospitalisation for depression, and subsequent disappearance. The lyrics, whether personal or political, are graphic and unflinchingly bleak. And even their usually buoyant glam hooks are tighter and more intense. It’s a powerful statement and still remains one of The Manics’ finest moments.

                                                                          Jimi Hendrix

                                                                          Are You Experienced

Jimi Hendrix's debut recording was an instant classic, and is as startling today as when it first hit the streets in 1967. "Are You Experienced?" is probably the most rock-oriented of Hendrix's official studio releases, but its influences are incredibly diverse. "Third Stone From The Sun" recalls the supple octaves of jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery; the churning Afro-Cuban polyrhythms of "Manic Depression" evoke John Coltrane and Elvin Jones; "I Don't Live Today" employs ritualistic Native American drum beats; and the title tune borrows the Eastern airs of sitarist Ravi Shankar.

Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding blast away with a barely controlled fury, and there's a distorted metallic edge to Hendrix's guitar timbre that has made "Are You Experienced?" a particular favourite among rock and heavy-metal guitarists. "Purple Haze" and "Foxy Lady" helped define the power-trio format, thanks to Hendrix's full-bodied rhythm guitar and his soaring solos. "Are You Experienced?" also established Hendrix as a singer-songwriter. His Dylanesque vocals and spacey imagery make each tune a little gem, especially on gentle outings such as the ballad "The Wind Cries Mary".

                                                                          Jimi Hendrix

                                                                          Axis: Bold As Love

"Axis: Bold As Love" was the follow-up to "Are You Experienced?", and represented a much more conscious use of the recording studio's possibilities. Where his live shows continued to showcase the raw rocking power of the Experience, the recording studio gave Hendrix the composer/arranger a broader palette. There are still plenty of powerful blues/rock-inflected songs, such as the menacing "If 6 Was 9", the rolling "Spanish Castle Magic" and the spatial title tune. But "Up From The Skies" is a jazzy trio romp, featuring Hendrix's bluesy, vocalised wah-wah pedal. And on the ballads "Little Wing"and "Castles Made Of Sand", Hendrix shifts the focus from the band to the silvery chord/melody accompaniments he often employed to complement his vocals. They are an orchestral effect unto themselves.

                                                                          Johnny Cash

At San Quentin - 180 Gram Legacy Vinyl Edition

Perhaps even more so than its predecessor, "Johnny Cash At San Quentin" captures Cash at his most raw and uninhibited. The artist's raucous rapport with his captive audience is obvious on an inspired mix of Cash classics ("I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues"), jailhouse ballads ("Starkville City Jail," "San Quentin"), traditional tunes ("Wreck of the Old 97," "There'll Be Peace in the Valley") and well-chosen covers (Bob Dylan's "Wanted Man," the Lovin' Spoonful's "Darling Companion"). The album's most popular track, though, remains the Shel Silverstein-penned novelty number "A Boy Named Sue," which became the biggest hit single of Cash's career.

                                                                            5. Folsom Prison Blues

                                                                            Johnny Cash

                                                                            At Folsom Prison

"Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison" fully captures Cash's gritty intensity and hard-headed humanity, capturing a high-energy set performed for an equally spirited audience. With a set list tailored for the occasion, Cash focuses on songs dealing with crime and imprisonment, balancing dark subject matter with wry, playful humor. The album opens, appropriately enough, with the venerable "Folsom Prison Blues," and continues with such outlaw anthems as "Cocaine Blues," "25 Minutes to Go, "The Wall" and "I Got Stripes," alongside such Cash classics as "I Still Miss Someone," "Orange Blossom Special" and "Jackson," with the latter track featuring Cash's wife and frequent duet partner June Carter. The album closes on an inspirational note with "Greystone Chapel," a song written by convict Glen Shirley, which Cash and his band learned especially for this show.

This isn't a 'sell out' slbum though, she still stick to her defiant, poetic lyrics but here she  manages to create a balance between her art and commercial success.

The uncompromising debut from American quartet, Rage Against the Machine, opens with the fast-paced “Bombtrack” and continues its intensity through the remaining nine tracks, including the huge hits "Bullet In The Head" and "Killing In The Name Of". The self-titled album combines metal riffs with hip-hop which has been employed by plenty of bands with varying degrees of success. What really set RATM apart though was the political conviction and sheer intensity and venom of frontman Zach De La Rocha's vocal delivery.

On "Electric Ladyland" Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. "Electric Ladyland" was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)".  Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit (Earl King's "Come On [Part 1]"), a Bob Dylan favourite ("All Along The Watchtower"), and one of his snappiest singles ("CrosstownTraffic"). Although Hendrix produced and wrote most of this masterpiece, others weighed in with their own contributions. Noel Redding penned "Little Miss Strange", and other guests such as Al Kooper and Buddy Miles showed up to play. Traffic's Steve Winwood and Jack Casady of Jefferson Airplane also made cameos, appearing on this classic album's spiritual centre, "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)".

But just in case you don’t know, this is arguably one of the best debut albums of all time, from one of the most influential bands of their generation! And if that’s not enough to tempt you, then I don’t know what is.

The quality of these songs is actually hard to comprehend; absolute classics, every single one! Uprooting the established guitar pop format in favour of a loose-limbed groove the baggy icons somehow incorporated Byrdsian jangle, hippie-inclusivity, funk swagger and searing solos into a new type of rock music, single-handedly soundtracking the second Summer of Love and defining a moment in time. It ignited and united a whole generation and will be passed on forever. Beautiful.

                                                                                        Graceland

2012 commemorates the 25th Anniversary of Paul Simon's groundbreaking, multi million selling album "Graceland".

                                                                                          The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses - 20th Anniversary Special Edition

Originally released in May 1989, "The Stone Roses" is often cited as THE greatest album of all time. Twenty years on and original producer John Leckie has returned to the studio for the first time (it's never been remastered before) with Ian Brown, to produce this anniversary version of the record. The result is a warmer, brighter sound, and it's finally loud enough too! It seems unnecessary to add what a brilliant album this so obviously is: every tune's a winner!

                                                                                            The Lost Riots

An impressively assured debut album from Hope Of The States and one that has already seen them compared to prime time Radiohead, this is an album full of epic masterpieces that could well see HOTS catapulted to another level. There is an obvious influence from more avant acts such as Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Sigur Ros on show here, and indeed the production duties are taken up by Sigur Ros' Ken Thomas. Having survived and moved on from the tragic suicide of their guitarist Jimmi Lawrence which would have seen the break up of lesser bands, this is an epic fully formed triumph!!!

                                                                                              Roger Waters

Here it is at last the long awaited DVD from Pink Floyd founding member Roger Waters. Waters toured the US for the first time in 12 years in 1999 / 2000 with his highly acclaimed "In The Flesh" that presented, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of Waters' music including early Pink Floyd material, classic compositions from the Floyd masterpieces "The Wall" and "Dark Side Of The Moon", less well known songs from "Animals", "Wish You Were Here" and "The Final Cut", songs from his solo works "Amused To Death" and "The Pros and Cons Of Hitch Hiking" and the debut of a new song "Each Small Candle".
