BACK CATALOGUE - K

A highly personalised sociopathic gem delivered as a futuristic rewriting of how music works, a melodious breeze with a tail wind of venomous din. A ten-track album, her tenth studio set.

Enveloping the juxtaposition of the concept of ‘dark sunshine’, a brooding solo record creating with friends to expand her off-kilter sonic vision; a squally, squeaky mix of discordant beauty.

Feedback and phasing gyrate from simply strummed normality, imagine Dinosaur Jr and My Bloody Valentine cranking up a Dylan couplet. Messing with both extremes of the sonic spectrum: atonal and arrhythmic, a unique sound and a glorious return to form for one of alternative rock’s true innovators.

“Sometimes the most subversive thing I can do musically is adhere to standard song structure, sometimes the creepiest chords are the ones we’ve heard before, twisted into different shapes, and sometimes a story is lived a thousand times before we can ride it like a roller coaster. Nothing wholly unfamiliar is gonna make you look twice. When you can describe a record as being “deceptively” anything, you’re hinting at the sociopathic nature of music. Something I love. Imagine truly buying your own sunshine and charm, but also your darkness and violence; the two sides of your psychology showing each other off in relief. Songs can do that...we can’t, really. Darkness we’ve seen.” Kristin Hersh, July 2018.

“She's still as powerful a presence as she ever was.” Pitchfork

“The prodigious output and commitment to quality is pretty staggering, but then Kristin Hersh is a very, very special musician.” The Quietus.

Flesh Of My Skin - Remastered Original 1974 Mix

"Pick A Dub" showcased the enduring strength and pivotal importance of the rhythm to the development of reggae music. Keith Hudson’s complete mastery of the genre and the unqualified praise that followed its release was fully justified. The album’s “œaustere sonic qualities” are awe inspiring, the superb rhythms are given full rein, unencumbered by extra effects and studio trickery. The overall effect is as mesmerising now as it was over forty years ago. Both CD & double LP set contain bonus tracks featuring eight vocal cuts of the featured dub including two previously unreleased tracks.

STAFF COMMENTS

Martin says: One of the greatest dub albums ever released, certainly in the top 5, and imperative listening for any appreciator of the form. Carlton and Aston Barrett and Augustus Pablo contributed music, while vocal fragments include Hudson, Horace Andy and Big Youth. Hudson's sparse handling of production and lack of studio ornamentation allow the heavyweight rhythms and echoing, dreamlike vocal melodies space to shine.

    Kate Jackson

    British Road Movies

‘British Road Movies’ is the long awaited debut solo album from Kate Jackson, former frontwoman of The Long Blondes. Co-written and produced by Bernard Butler (Suede, The Tears), ‘British Road Movies’ is a cinematic, eclectic and beautiful record.

Synth driven glam rock, ‘Blade Runner’ electronica, faded piano allure and sweeping Bond style string sections are topped with Jackson’s unique vocal style and Butler’s instantly recognisable guitar sound.

These are big, melodic, alternative pop songs with Butler’s production perfectly complementing the narrative of the record.

A shared love of Bowie, Eno, The Fall, Shocking Blue and Neil Young filters seamlessly into these recordings which sound both modern and timeless.

‘British Road Movies’ establishes Jackson as a solo artist and songwriter akin to the likes of Jane Weaver, Nadine Shah and Gwenno.

Jackson’s Brutalist paintings adorn the album sleeve.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Channeling the spirit of rock and roll through a psychedelic filter, 'British Road Movies' is melodic but textured, smooth but liberally saturated with a sort of kaleidoscopic warmth. Sunny and mellow, perfect summer anthems for the mildly inebriated. Brilliant stuff.

      Kara Jackson

Why Does The Earth Give Us People To Love?

'Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?' is the debut album by Chicago-based Poet Laureate & singer-songwriter Kara Jackson.

'Why Does the Earth Give Us People to Love?', is a sonic invitation to process our grief. The title is a question the author is always answering. How do we give ourselves permission to yearn for the people we miss? How do we find the courage to let go of what begs to be released? How do we have the audacity to love in spite of everything invented to deter us from it?

Kara wrote and recorded the original demos in her childhood bedroom during the early days of the pandemic, drafting lyrics in bed and singing into a mic propped up on her dresser. From there she brought in Nnamdi, Kaina and Sen Morimoto to re-record the demos and help shape the production.

Wielding her voice like a honey-coated blade, Kara Jackson crafts a blend of emotional folk music and poetic alt-country. With the radical honesty of Nina Simone, the intricate lyricism of Fiona Apple and Joanna Newsom, and the straightforward, no-frills delivery of artists like Kimya Dawson, Kara’s writing blurs the line between poetry and song, demanding an attentive ear and a repeat listen.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Jackson's music is both intensely powerful and wildly understated, often relying upon an unadorned guitar and single vocal, before flourishing into orchestral swells and beautifully harmonised melodies. An arresting, cohesive debut LP with a singular sound.

        Kito Jempere

        DB7 003

Saint Petersburg disco spinner, deep house don and advanced level digger Kito Jempere joins the ranks of the Duca Bianco mafia, shunning the fancy handshake and instead securing his entry with two top notch edits of exceptional obscurity. On the A-side, "FKA Lany" chugs along like a peak time power ballad, with a killer synth riff replacing any guitar histrionics. Armed with a bassline which walks slowly downstairs, plenty of fx use and a big emotive female vocal, this is primed for end of night deployment. Over on the flip, "Drakon" shakes asiatic melodies, pop-fusion and Fairlight stylings into a killer bit of 80s pop - in other words, well Balearic!

        Kacey Johansing

        Year Away

Kacey Johansing’s latest album Year Away will be released July 28 via Night Bloom Records.

Once again Johansing called upon some of the finest players of Northeast Los Angeles’ vibrant music community to lend a hand with the record. The 70s R&B-folk of “Watch It Like a Show” features an electric guitar solo from Hand Habits’ Meg Duffy, while album closer “Endless Sound” boasts backing vocals from electronic musician Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and swooping Indian-inspired violins from Amir Yaghmai (HAIM, The Voidz). The record shines brightly thanks to an ace mix from veteran producer Rob Schnapf (Beck, Elliott Smith, Cat Power), woodwinds from Logan Hone (John Carroll Kirby, Eddie Chacon), and a featured rhythm section of drummer Josh Adams (Jenny Lewis, Bedouine) and bassist Todd Dahlhoff (Feist, Devendra Banhart). Recorded across multiple studios including LA’s famed Sunset Sound, the album remains steadfastly buoyed by the adept engineering of Tyler Karmen (MGMT, Alvvays).

In March of 2020, after learning that a dear friend’s life was coming to an end, Johansing sat down and in one sitting wrote the song “Daffodils”. An elegiac tribute to someone facing death with grace and curiosity, the lyrics confront Johansing’s own mortality by observing the brief lifespan of a Hlower. Only a week later when the world came to an abrupt standstill, she soon found herself processing this recent loss while trying to make sense of a new global reality. Across the ensuing months, Johansing found herself increasingly untethered by a world of isolation and political upheaval.

Having been a frequent touring member of bands like Hand Habits and Fruit Bats, and often being called into the studio to lend her harmonies and multiinstrumental talents to records, Johansing’s phone no longer rang. Living in Los Angeles she feared her musical community was vanishing, as friends and collaborators continually announced they were leaving the city. It was in returning to her piano nightly that she found the greatest solace, feverishly writing the songs that would be collected on her next album. Resulting from this new sense of time and focus was a deepening of her songwriting. As Johansing recalls, “I felt like a metamorphosis happened during that time. There was a lot of personal growth and healing.”

Throughout Year Away Johansing traverses uncharted emotional landscapes brought upon by the changes occurring all around her. The forced selfreflection of the moment is aptly captured by “Old Friend”, featuring an aching melody and swooning production that recalls the best of Harry Nilsson. The epic piano and saxophone-driven “Smile with My Eyes” addresses the loss of community as friends became distant and political divides between family grew. On “Smile” Johansing pushes her vocals further than ever, expanding her range and using her peerless voice as the singular instrument it is. Facing the loss of a family home due to environmental destruction, “Shifting Sands” is marked by soaring Hlutes, Hield recordings and glassy synthesizers that nod to Japanese New Age.

“Daffodils' ', the stunning album centerpiece, is built from a pastiche of looping samples, swirling Mellotron and dazzling vibraphone. “Keep your heart open wide, you never know your time / Keep your heart wild, true Flower child”, Johansing sings as she says goodbye to an elder, while the band reaches a grief-stricken crescendo of woodwinds and chiming bells. On the title track, Johansing takes listeners on an eerily meditative journey of collective experiences. “I wanted to keep the progression simple and repetitive so that musically we could add new elements little by little, while the emotional tone of the lyrics becomes increasingly more strained and expressive”. The song grows to a fever pitch as Johansing sings higher than she thought possible; the tension of the repeating chords Finally resolving into a hopeful coda as multiple soloists weave around each other.

Amidst heavier themes, Johansing still leaves room for her love of irresistible pop melodies and lush production. The driving “Last Drop” and mid-tempo “Valley Green” are two of her catchiest songs to date. On the former Johansing sings the anthemic chorus, “As if it were the last drop, and nothing ever lasts forever / As if it were the last stop, too far out to come back ever”, longing for a love that she’ll never take for granted, while also admitting that she doesn’t always know how good she has it. “Valley Green” features shimmering layers of 12- string guitars, stacked horns and an impeccable solo by co-producer and multi- instrumentalist Tim Ramsey (Vetiver, Fruit Bats), hinting at a love for bands like NRBQ.

Having been eager to capture the initial spark of songwriting, Johansing booked time at Highland Park’s 64 Sound Studio the week that it reopened. Over the course of three days, she and her band gathered basic tracks for 10 songs, before returning home to Hinish the record with Ramsey. Setting forth to make an album that paid homage to the music that kept them company during the months spent alone together, the duo pulled inspiration from a wide net including Burt Bacharach, John Carroll Kirby & Haruomi Hosono. Ramsey’s newfound love of early digital synthesizers dovetailed effortlessly with Johansing’s fondness for classic 70’s horn and string arrangements, creating a sound that is distinctly modern yet warm and familiar.

            Kathryn Joseph

For You Who Are The Wronged

"for you who are the wronged" is the much anticipated follow-up to 2018’s "from when i wake the want is", and her 2014 debut "bones you have thrown me and blood i’ve spilled", which won 2015’s Scottish Album of the Year award. If "from when i wake…" was written for love to return, this is where she fights tooth and claw to protect it.

Written and co-produced by Kathryn Joseph, it was recorded at The Lengths Studio in Fort William, with producer Lomond Campbell (also a recording artist for Heavenly Records and has previously produced King Creosote). Kathryn is signed to fellow Scottish musicians, Mogwai's Rock Action Records. It will appeal to those that have bought Kathryn's earlier albums plus fans of Lana Del Ray, Laura Marling, Kate Bush, Aidan Moffat, and Erland Cooper.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: For her third LP, Kathryn Joseph brings all of the brittle balladry and off-kilter weirdness of her previous outings, but imbued with a confidence and cinematic intensity we've not heard before. For Your Who Are The Wronged (Lomond Campbell Remixes)

Kathryn Joseph releases a new EP featuring reworks of tracks taken from her critically acclaimed 2022 album for you who are the wronged, alongside a brand new song, all created with her long time collaborator Lomond Campbell. Described by Pitchfork as sounding like “unmeditated transpositions of feeling”, Joseph’s complex, quietly seething lyricism sees her songs give voice to those robbed of their own. for you who are the wronged is woven with pain, futility and stasis; delicately addressing subjects of abuse and trauma with peace and kindness and extending a comforting arm to those who seek it. The new EP takes the delicate instrumentation of the original record and builds it up to something bigger, bolder and stronger.

Barry says: Echoing piano and dusty atmospheric washes with touches of jazzy percussion make for a beautifully mournful but immersive backdrop for Joseph's evocative vocal touches. A stunningly fragile but brilliantly immersive listen.

                K-Lone

                Swells

Wisdom Teeth co-founder K-LONE returns with his second full length project, ‘Swells’: a kaleidoscopic and expansive record that looks to deep house, synthpop, leftfield R&B and beyond for a spellbinding masterwork of melodic electronica.

His debut LP ‘Cape Cira’ became the accidental soundtrack of the long strange summer of 2020 - its lush marimbas, hazy atmos and synthesised bird calls providing the ideal soundtrack for some much needed collective escapism. The record was widely deemed one of 2020’s standout electronic LPs, gaining glowing reviews in Pitchfork, DJ Mag, Mixmag and Resident Advisor, and ranking highly in end of year lists by Crack Magazine, Bleep.com and beyond.

Approaching its follow up, the Brighton-based producer felt a fresh perspective was needed. Originally landing on the name ‘Swells’ as a secret pen-name to write the record under, the intention was to keep the project as separate as possible from ‘Cape Cira’ to avoid settling into familiar territories - but as the record took shape it became clear that it made perfect sense amongst his already diverse discography.

Like ‘Cape Cira’, there is a distinct and intentionally limited sound palette at play on ‘Swells’. Looping vocal cuts, rich cluster chords and undulating arpeggios sit front and centre here - as does the lo-fi plonk of of the CR78 drum machine. But while the record clearly takes influence from a range of vintage sound sources, its overall aesthetic is unmistakably contemporary. Sounds are not artificially degraded nor obscured under washes of sampled tape hiss. Rather, everything is processed with a gloss, hi-fidelity sheen. The record’s rhythms are bright, dry and snappy, and its melodies are processed with a neon poppy glow.

The producer’s unabashed love of contemporary pop music is most obviously exemplified by the appearance of British singer-songwriter Eliza Rose. The pair met for a session at a North London studio back in 2021, and the now Brit Award-nominated singer’s warm, emotive vocal takes became an immediate source of inspiration early in the record’s conception. As such, Rose’s voice is heard in various states of manipulation throughout its duration - initially as reduced and looped phrases, and then finally in full form on ‘With U’: a low-lit, dubbed-out slice of leftfield R&B that beckons comparisons with Tirzah, Little Dragon and even Erykah Badu.

Elsewhere, there are references to G-Funk (‘Oddball’), Autonomic drum and bass (‘Shimmer’), hip-house (‘Love Is’) and even Metronomy-era electro pop (‘Love Me A Little’).

As always, the true magic of K-LONE’s artistry is to present complex, subtle and original ideas in ways that feel familiar and immediate. Melodies are introduced as effortless earworms, only to be twisted out of shape into strange and unusual formulations. Looping rhythms unspool into washes of hazy, dubbed-out ambience before rebuilding themselves. Refined and endlessly creative, ‘Swells’ marks a captivating next step for a producer and record label that have both reliably positioned themselves at the very forefront of contemporary electronic music.

                    Spall

Write. Record. Break. Recategorize. Reassemble. In K. Leimer’s most recent work, he returns to his long running interest in developing relationships in sound that are not composed, not planned, not under conscious influence or control. Phrases and patterns emerge from dense layering and editing; melodic elements are split apart, re-voiced and reset in successive contexts. A music of distressed fragments, Spall originates from acoustic, electric, synthesized, manipulated, torn, and piece-work audio that combines into complex, layered, and flowing pieces of unexpected turns and contrasts. Modified, melted, and shaped into shifting sonic environments that fuse the clear signal with the distorted, the recognizable with ambiguous, Spall is music mined from an abandoned quarry.

                      Wahala Wahala

Under the guidance of the outrageously talented Ghanaian force of nature Kweku Sackey, aka K.O.G, and the whirlwind of energy that is Jamaican rapper Franz Von, the Zongo Brigade deliver infectious, high-energy West African grooves via Sheffield, drawing on Afrobeat, soul, funk, rock, hip hop and reggae which has fast gained recognition in London and all over the UK.
K.O.G’s signature mix of high-energy songs, raps, operatic vocal effects, along with the hard-hitting patois raps from the spirited Franz Von and a dedicated band of serious musical badmen, has led the band to perform on some of the biggest stages including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds Festivals and numerous clubs and venues around Europe.

Deeply rooted in stories from Africa, the album draws on love, peace and social issues. K.O.G & the Zongo Brigade’s motto “Unity in Diversity” stems from Kweku’s African origins and also embraces the eclectic mix of nationalities which make up the band.

With a backdrop of unmistakeable African rhythms that include electric brass, thunderous percussion and sharp-edge guitar, ‘Wahala Wahala’ takes possession of the body as the words excite the mind. Racism, rejection, inequality, exile - the subject matter is always serious but the delivery irresistibly upbeat and rhythmic, guaranteed to get the feet moving because in every pain, there is also joy.

If you haven’t encountered The K’s impassioned bangers, catch up. In the last 12 months alone, they’ve sold out a UK tour, and sold every ticket for their upcoming Manchester Academy show in under 24 hours. They opened the main stages at Isle of Wight and Neighbourhood Festivals, as well as gracing the main stages at Leeds, Reading and Kendal Calling, and tore the roof down at this year's Tramlines, with hundreds unable to get into the big top to see them play. They’ve supported Liam Gallagher, James and Blondie, their streams are also getting comfortably in the millions…not bad for a band from Warrington.

Their gigs are a guaranteed riot, with the recent 13 date sellout UK and Ireland tour leading them to being asked to put in a Royal Albert Hall appearance with Kasabian on their day off. This pulsing live reputation shouldn’t overlook the sophistication that gives The K’s their immediately identifiable blueprint though. Their debut single “Sarajevo” was one of the few rock and roll songs to namecheck Austro-Hungary, whilst notching up over 4 million streams in the process, and their recent single ‘Hoping Maybe’ became a phone-lights-on live anthem that reached number 2 on the iTunes chart, kept off the top spot only by Miley Cyrus.

So where next? The band have just been announced as main support on the upcoming tour for the recent number 1 album success story that is The Reytons, taking in arenas, warehouses and Academy venues.

Their debut album is released in early 2024 on thriving Manchester indie LAB Records. With each new release, The K’s just keep growing. A cult sensation, an irresistible, irrefutable spirit, welcoming to anyone who wants to join and escape into a better, more hopeful world.

"Resonance" is the latest offering from K15, arriving on 2000Black. Resonance opens with a meditative chord arrangement that gets subtly layered with percussion and programmed drums, creating a song of depth and richness.

Within Reach is the most playful track on the record. An uptempo ride, filled with class and flair and demonstrates K15's evolution of ambition and composition.

The EP closes with the militant groove that is Resistance. The heavy bass, the wall of synths and the floating shakers create a track pulsing with life. "Resonance" is filled with life and rhythm, making it a fitting addition to the 2000Black catalogue.

The duo behind the Netflix series Bordertown’s score, Kaae & Batz drop their new album, "Lush" on Copenhagen-based record label Stereo Royal.

The album is a collection of reflective and melancholic cinematic tracks with clear references to jazz and neo-classicism where organic elements merge with electronic textures and emotional vocal samples. Containing the single “Into the Void (Part 1)” - a dark, ghostly and destructive dystopia accompanied by momentously moving strings, vocals & piano (could be summat of The Revernant!). The album came to life on a 14-day trip to Istanbul and the majority of the tracks, including this first single, are created entirely from samples and programming. It's heart-wrenchingly powerful throughout, maintaining an expansive, cinematic aesthetic that only adds to its emotional power.

Kaae & Batz have previously released two albums, "Basement Tales (2015) and "Mosaic" (2019), as well as composed scores for several international film productions which have garnered attention and critical acclaim in the industry. The story about childhood friends Kaspar Kaae (CODY) and Brian Batz (Sleep Party People) dates back to their teenage years in Bornholm where they were both born and raised. They went to high school together, cultivated their shared interest in music, and played together in bands. These years became the cornerstone of their friendship and musical collaboration.

"Lush" shines a light on Danish electronica and contains that bleak epicness that also characterize much of the 'Scandi Noir' dramas. Makes you want to pull the curtains tight shut and get the fire on! A breathtakingly intimate and moving body of music that's the perfect companion for a icy cold Winter's night.

                          STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: A hugely rewarding, highly cinematic experience from this duo who until I knew little about. This is great; detailed electronica, lavish orchestration and deep sentimental moods all coalescing to create a stunning body of work. Near perfect in its construction there's an almost overwhelming sensitivity to some of the tracks.

                          Kabaka Pyramid

                          The Kalling

The Bebble Rock virtuoso Kabaka Pyramid released his sophomore album, 'The Kalling,' produced by Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley. The fifteen-track masterpiece features some of the reggae icon's most frequent collaborators like Damian Marley, Protoje, Black Am I, Jesse Royal, and new collaborators like Buju Banton and Stephen Marley. This second installment in Kabaka's album discography is a symphony of songs that make a musical statement about the evolution of his craft.

The name "Kabaka" is Ugandan for "King." The long-lasting survival of the Pyramids of ancient Africa represent his desire for longevity in music and deep connection to Kemetic roots; leaving messages for generations to come. He is known for songs like Warrior, Well Done which focused keenly on local systemic issues and Reggae Music that took on a life of its own. His debut album Kontraband was met with critical acclaim, containing hits such as Kontraband featuring Damian Marley and Kaught Up with a popular music video that debuted on BET.

His recent singles: Make Things Work and Red, Gold and Green, featuring Damian Marley, Grateful, featuring Jemere Morgan, and the title track The Kalling, featuring Stephen Marley, were the four leads for this new album.

The album features production from Damian Marley, Stephen Marley, Young Pow and Kabaka Pyramid, another tradition carried over from the previous album. Providing a sufficient platform for Kabaka to update listeners about his growth since his first album. The production highlights the richness of Reggae music, from the keen perfection of percussion and bass to the sampling of iconic songs of Junior Byles in Faded Away, featuring Buju Banton; Peter Tosh in Mystic Man; or Eddie Fitzroy in EZ Ride.

"The Kalling is really about my journey in music being for a higher purpose, not just to get rich or popular, but to inspire a higher vibration in whoever listens" says Kabaka Pyramid. "While the majority seek pleasure and sense gratification, there are a few who the Most Highkall [sic] upon to keep the balance inna [sic] earth. Music is what I use to answer the kall and you can feel it throughout this album."

The album is the winner of the best reggae album at the 2023 Grammy's.

                            Remi Kabaka

                            Black Goddess OST

Soundway Records are proud to present the Afro-jazz soundtrack to Ola Balogun's legendary movie from 1978. The film was written and directed by Balogun (recognised as one of Nigeria's most renowned directors) but shot and cast in Brazil. The Soundtrack was composed by one of Nigeria's most successful and original musicians Remi Kabaka (who has played with Steve Winwood and Ginger Baker amongst others).

The Record was originally issued in both Nigeria and Brazil, but recorded in Lagos, using four of the Nigerian music scene's most innovative players: Remi Kabaka himself, alongside Biddy Wright, saxophonist Dele Okonkwo and Mono Mono frontman Joni Haastrup. The result is a truly unique and experimental afro-jazz recording that has been out of print for many years, until now.

                              Remi Kabaka

                              Son Of Africa

BBE Music are proud to reissue one of the most elusive and sought-after Afro-Funk LPs of all time: Son Of Africa, by Remi Kabaka. Now a proud 85 years of age and enjoying retirement in America, Remi was the cornerstone of British West African music in the 50s, 60s and 70s, along with Ginger Oloronso Johnson, Fela Kuti and others. But while Ginger played mambo and cha cha cha in Soho clubland and Fela released his early ‘highlife jazz’ records on the Melodisc label, Remi Kabaka was fully ensconced in the UK Rock world, playing sessions and live shows with The Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney, Ginger Baker, Steve Winwood and countless others. As the 60s became the 70s, Kabaka developed yet another string to his bow: the development of a UK based West African Funk scene, that found its genesis in the legendary Osibisa, but with an influence and an inspiration that spilled over into every contemporary Brit Funk band from Cymande and the Equals to The Average White Band, Matata and beyond. Son Of Africa was originally released by Chris Blackwell’s Island records in 1976, to little acclaim, very few reviews, and with almost no promotion. African music was a hard sell when the 70s Black British record market wanted reggae first and foremost, and with Bob Marley on the books, Island understandably had other priorities at the time. The record disappeared. Until it reappeared in the early 2000s, as a £700-plus collectors’ item. It’s barely 30 minutes long. But every single minute is drenched with sinuous, spare funk: no spacey psych rock, no disco, no boogie, no over-the-top production: just 90-110 BPM grooves that go straight to the body. So: whether you’re a turntablist, a hip hop sampler, or just an honest-to-goodness African Funk lover, catch this limited reissue (with full, updated liner notes) while you can. There won’t be another chance.

Originally released in 1982 on the short-lived Lyncell Records imprint, BBE Music is excited to present the brilliant and ultra-rare album ‘African Sunset’ by South African band Kabasa. Formed in Soweto by vocalist and bassist Tata “TNT” Sibeko, guitarist Robert “Doc” Mthalane (described as the Jimi Hendrix of South Africa) and percussionist OupaSegwai, Kabasa recorded a trio of powerful albums in early-80s Johannesburg. Having been part of the iconic Afro-rock band Harari, the first ever local black pop band to appear on South African TV, Mthalane and Segwai decamped to team up with Sibeko for Kabasa’s eponymous debut in 1980. ‘African Sunset’ is their third and final album and is produced by the band with songwriting duties shared between founding members Sibeko and Mthalane as well as newly-joined percussionist and flautist Mabote “Kelly” Petlane. Taking in psychedelic rock influences alongside shades of jazz, funk and more traditional sounds, ‘African Sunset’ is a timeless album, standing out to this day thanks to its heavy grooves, great songwriting and superior musicianship. With original pressings of ‘African Sunset’ now virtually impossible to find, BBE Music is delighted to present this carefully remastered version that includes original artwork. Available on vinyl, CD and digital formats.

                                Cape Elizabeth

Noah Kahan on Cape Elizabeth –
“And that EP in particular is such a special story, because it was right at the beginning of the pandemic, and I just made it with my neighbour, a friend of mine, who’s an amazing producer.

We worked on it for a week, and we didn’t really promote it too much — and it kind of became “Stick Season” before “Stick Season” in a lot of ways.

It was a study on a place and a relationship in a place, and it was the first time I’d experimented with telling a story that felt like it had an overarching narrative.

And it was also the first time that I let myself just not care about how it sounded at the end. Whatever the process was, I just wanted it to make me happy. And to see it connect with people really inspired me to write “Stick Season.”

It kind of gave me the confidence to be like, “All right, this niche-specific storytelling stuff can actually connect with people in a more universal way.” I really owe it all to that EP, and it’s still probably my favorite piece of work I’ve made. I just love it.”

Within six days and “without overthinking anything,” Noah Kahan completed the five-track Cape Elizabeth EP which has amassed 200M streams. See the newly repackaged Cape Elizabeth Aqua vinyl as Noah’s “thank you to the fans who stuck around, came to shows, watched my livestreams, and listened.” The vinyl features fan favorite songs “A Troubled Mind”, “Glue Myself Shut” and “Maine”.

                                  Stick Season

Following the release of his sophomore album, Noah continued to write and record, unlocking a new level of himself as an artist and songwriter.

Rife with fluttering guitar melodies, inviting vocals, and homey imagery of the northeast on the verge of changing seasons, it represents a massive turning point for him. Kahan’s relationship with his career was altered, his conviction for storytelling and a pursuit of a more organic sound that aligned with the folk music of his upbringing had firmly arrived.

                                        Kaina

                                        It Was A Home

Firmly one of today’s essential artists, Venezuelan/Guatemalan-American singer-songwriter KAINA announces her new album titled ‘It Was A Home’ that is slated for release on March 4th via City Slang. In celebration, the beloved artist shares her smoldering new single, “Anybody Can Be In Love”, along with an enchanting companion video. Directed by Weird Life Films, the visual brings to life KAINA’s whimsical world inspired by the quintessential Mr. Rogers TV series. “Anybody Can Be In Love” embodies the sentiment of authentically accepting love in its various forms. ‘It Was A Home’ will showcase KAINA’s stunning new artistic direction, the result of her own personal evolution and newly found sense of self, while maintaining roots in her signature sound. The album will include features from beloved artists such as Sleater-Kinney, Helado Negro and Sen Morimoto.

Born in Chicago to immigrant parents, KAINA creates generational music that surpasses borders and speaks to a far-reaching community of people that grew up in between languages, cultures, regions, and genres. KAINA has been catapulted to the forefront of a new wave of artists transforming the music landscape through deep representation. Her previous projects, the 2016 EP sweet asl. and her debut 2019 album Next To The Sun, cemented KAINA as a critically acclaimed artist and established her cult following. The projects showcased her signature sound that is lined with a sweet-hearted optimism, devastating authenticity and one that she uses as a means to uplift and build community. She has previously collaborated with Saba, The O’My’s, Sen Morimoto, and through multidisciplinary work around Chicago with various organizations.

“’Anybody Can Be in Love’ is about letting go and accepting love when it comes to any sort of relationship, romantic or platonic. I’ve seen myself and my close friends miss out on a really great moment we’ve wished for or a great relationship because we’re so fixated on getting hurt or being fearful. ‘Anybody Can Be in Love’ is a little reminder to keep it simple and enjoy the moments you’ve been waiting for. Sonically, I wanted the track to sound very psychedelic and dreamy. Almost like love is taking over and you’re just losing yourself in a moment. It was a pleasure working on this with first time collaborator Biako along with Sen Morimoto and longtime bandmate Michael Cantella on bass.” - KAINA ON “ANYBODY CAN BE IN LOVE”

                                          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Kaina's soulful vocals ride beautifully atop a background of swooning loungey percussion and rich rolling bass. We get 60's psychedelia, eastern influenced grooves and hazy downbeat stagger. It's a beautiful and wonderfully written collection, and a constantly evolving gem.

                                          Employment

The hugely anticipated debut album from one of the most hotly tipped bands around at the moment, hot on the heels of two great pop singles: "I Predict A Riot" and "Oh My God". Fans of their releases so far won't be disappointed the album ebbs and flows nicely between jaunty energetic pop reminiscent of Super Furry Animals quirky pop, and gentler more reflective moments.

                                            Kaiser Chiefs' Easy Eighth Album

Almost two decades in the game, and armed with an extensive back-catalogue of stadium belters, and record-breaking success, Kaiser Chiefs return with their brand new studio album.

Produced by Amir Amor (Rudimental), the album sees the Kaiser Chiefs return with a fresh and bold new sound. From the Nile Rodgers co-write of new single 'Feeling Alright', to the frantic 'Beautiful Girl', horn-laden Kaiser Chiefs throwback 'Job Centre Shuffle' and joyous punch in the gut that is 'Jealousy', these ten tracks are a true statement of intent from a band that continues to deliver the goods again and again.

Where 2019's Duck straddled the tide between Northern-Soul euphoria and early '00s antithesis, 2024 will see Kaiser Chiefs stepping into a renewed spotlight; a hook-heightened universe in which Ricky Wilson, Andrew "Whitey" White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Keyboardist Peanut and Vijay Mistry on drums, come together to once again create what they craft best; breakthrough belters for the world's dancefloor.

                                              Error In The System

Kaiserdisco share their first Drumcode EP in eight years. With a knack for clever vocal hooks and crisp production, Kaiserdisco are never far from Adam Beyer’s thinking when it comes scheduling Drumcode releases. With this in mind, it feels almost unbelievable to think ‘Error in the System’ will be the duo’s first EP on Drumcode since 2016.
In recent times the pair has contributed tracks to the label, highlighted last year’s ‘Get on the Dancefloor’ on A – Sides Vol.12 and their popular single ‘Together One Time’ from 2022. ‘Error in the System’ marks their return to the EP format and is an absolute treat. Lead track ‘In the Music’ is a trippy roller that lures you into a dancefloor trance via an addictive vocal hook, before morphing into an acid - drenched stomper in the second half. The title track is a peak - time head spinner, characterised by muted tones and industrial effects, it’s an eerie and powerful slice of club machinery crafted for maximum impact.

Barry says: A pumping duo of snapping 808's and 16th drum fills, both pieces here are rich in the techno tradition and come on a label that's probably one of the most well known in the game. If you're a fan of the uptempo electronic business (Rusty), this one's for you.

                                              Lo-Fi Hip Hop Instrumentals

Son of Todd Osborn (Soundmurderer/Ghostly) Kaito Ian makes a hugely impressing first outing on the Galaxy Sound Co label with a series of lo-fi hip-hop beat-strumentals that cannot fail to get your head nodding. He is a dedicated music lover and skater with a deep knowledge of his craft and that shows here with some refined sounds starting with the soul drenched 'Revert', then on to the warped angelic vocal samples of 'Sequoia' and the percussive jumbled and scratching of 'Trek'. 'Wait Up' is another excellently blissed out joint and 'Sloan' is a sunny, laid back, lazy vibe to close down a superb EP.

Matt says: Phwoooar 'ave some of THAT! Todd Osborn's son (!!) drops a tidy package of hip-hop instrumentals which lands somewhere between DJ Dez (Andres), Madlib and some of the beat tapes we've had through Fat Beats. You'll be clambering after a whole LP once you've digested this 7"!

"Kevin und Sandra" is a strong, technoid, rocking yet poetic introduction to the album. Hypnotic driving synths howling over a stoner rock alike drum beat and a fluid rollin' synth-bass. On top of that Kalaspatz tells the story of a raver couple on their way to a festival. Not much more than a little bag of excstasy pills in their pockets, the guys hoping to earn a little extra, failing grandiosely but ultimately experiencing great things while getting lost in the vortex of that festival night. "Springbrunne" is a great "Rap without Rap" hymn featuring the elegant and relaxed voice of Kayyak. Over a heavy beat he's toastin' about reinventing himself through the splatter of a fountain before Deacon Blues, better known as Seth Troxler, suddenly joining in, droppin' philosophic wisdom while the track slowly but surely rolling down the disco lane - driven by the brass and a walking bass. The titlesong of the new album, "Let Love Rumpel" is an ode to the joy of raving together but and the perfect soundtrack for sunrise. Spending a long night toghether, taking care about each other and then turn the night into day. Kalabrese always regards his music as second- or hidden floor music, going straight to the heart - softly embracing the tipsy and raptured. "Eight Bars" is massive Rumpelfunk, showing that it doesn't need more than a simple bassline and groove to lean back in the spirit of Funk. "Get Up And Try" is the nimble answer towards the exhausting polemic about measures within the pandemic and know-all caprices. A children's choir over a mid tempo house-beat, a beautiful chello by band buddy Dominik Löhrer and the swingin' trumpet, performed by Rumpeljazzer Benjamin Danech, who's immortalizing his big potential on this piece one more time. "Explore Yourself" is a collaboration with the talented newcomer Palma Ada who caused a stir with her vocal contributions on "Let Love Rumpel Pt. 1" already and settled so well in the Rumpelkosmos joining the Rumpelorchester for the recent live shows. Power-Rumpel-Techno, made to shake head and dance the pain away. On point and not a minute too long. "Die Kette feat Zoé Miku" is a powerful and hypnotic mid-tempo balearic house jam. A sunset, somewhere in the Pyrenees, listening to the contemplative vocals of Zoé Miku, who's in fact teaching people on the yoga mat in her daily live but equally enjoys the hazyness of a rave and unfolding on Kalabrese's playground. Free, without blinders or fixed confessions. "Healthy Again feat. Palma Ada" is the defiant statement why she - even as a ex upand- coming fence talent - is currently not able to do her fitness programme efficiently. She rather sings about letting herself go in the moody melancholy of a hangover - backed up by a wonderful brass section. "Middle Of The Night" is a stripped back, lyrical segment - made for lonely taxi rides around midnight and for all people struggling with insomnia. Carefully sculpted sounds, smooth and low bass tones and a captivating simple rhythm. Kala is drifting away in his Rumpelkammer - a truly intimate moment! The next track, "Halftime Blues" is quite the opposite; heavy and slow, a dub without echoes with a slightly dystopic texture to it. Written in dark wintertime, at the climax of the pandemic when a couple of Uber's were the only thing one could spot in the haze of the streets. With "Don't Loose The Center feat. Kayyak" Kalabrese is celebrating the Rumpelfunk again - this time pimped up with a lot of piano and boogie while Kayyak is lifting his voice, really singing for the very first time and prooves why he's matching so well in the Rumpelzirkus without loosing his uniqueness as an artist. Rumpelorchester's bass player Marci Dobozi accidentally delivered the magnificent piano, cluelessly producing a the hook by foolin' around in the studio while Kala's is celebrating the bassline on his beloved Juno 60. It's such a gift that those wonderful creative minds and musicians were able to let loose and just start jamming together during the pandemic.

South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was - from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Cosmoba is a brand new Manchester based imprint from Kalcagni. Fresh from releasing his "Manners" EP on Distrito 91, Kalcagni dishes up 4 slices of funk-fueled electro for this label debut.

Lead track "Lost In The System" features retro stylings and gritty electro bass hooks. This is swiftly followed up by "Multislacking", the result of a weekend spent twisting up a modular rig, with wonky bass squelches and 80s pads underpinned by slamming beats.

On the flip side, "Culture Vulture" introduces some heavy 303 workouts, before "After The Fact" rounds off the EP nicely, taking the acid vibe in a slightly darker direction with wonky Reese synth fills and jacked up breaks.

There's a rich sense of cybernetic atmosphere throughout, with just the right amount of squelch and snap present in Kalcagni's synths and drum machines. The EP is mixed and mastered cohesively; with a dull layer of sonic oxidation giving it a rough but penetrating edge.

RIYL: Ceephax, Roy Of The Ravers, Analord-era AFX, Luke Vibert etc.

Matt says: New local producer from Levenshume debuts on his own label. We're really liking the sound of this - stronger and tougher than 95% of the new electro also-rans; Kalcagni clearly has his collection of machines under control.

                                              B2. After The Fact

Following up on Cosmoba’s debut release. "Lost In The System", label owner Kalcagni returns with another 4 tracker of vibey electro and breaks; setting out his mission statement with a clear intent as he handles his modest array of machines with dexterity and poise.

Kicking off with "Mute Mode", which is perhaps the most anthemic we've heard the producer thus far. Channeling deep house and acid melodics, laced over chunky breaks and a warm analog bass; it has a post-peak afterglow and invigorating energy oft lacking from the electro genre.  "Up Here (In The Head)" follows up with another 303 workout, layered with infectious bass hooks and effected synth trills and driven by a high octane electro groove full of wet splashy snares and skeletal hi-hat rhythms.

On the flip side, "System Addict" ups the BPM’s and flexes a more upfront electro groove, with beefy drums, gnarly stabs and a twisted, resonant bassline that bites at the ankles of the dancefloor. Meanwhile "Worn Out Version" provides a more mellow and alternative vibe to close out the EP, with squelchy modular synth riffs and lush minor chords that recall Radioactive Man's playful mainframe excursions.

Seriously promising stuff from this local producer - don't get left in the void!

RIYL: Ceephax, Roy Of The Ravers, Analord-era AFX, Luke Vibert etc.

Matt says: The second of two EPs introducing a new local talent from Levenshume. Kalcagni's ability to juxtapose deep atmospheres with jarring rhythms and robust productions is beautifully displayed across these four storming electro growlers. Big tip and a producer to keep an eye on.

                                              Ada Kaleh

                                              Unravelling Ft. Eric Leeds

Ada Kaleh, the Romanian composer and DJ, follows up on his recent releases for R&S Records and Apollo with a brand new single, ‘Unravelling’.

Featuring the vocals of Fela Kuti at his most potent, ‘Unravelling’ also includes a featured performance from Eric Leeds, the American saxophone player most noted for his work with Prince, both in the studio and as part of the Purple One’s touring band.

Ada Kaleh constructs a hypnotising and minimalistic rhythm, reminiscent of Tony Allen's drumming style, speckled with dubbed out complexions and kaleidoscopic sonics that provide the perfect bed for Fela Kuti’s distinguished vocal delivery and conscientious lyric. The illustrious jazz musician Eric Leeds lends his prowess to the main mix here, as his smoky saxophone tones glide across ‘Unravelling’ with pure professional class!

Matt says: R&S' new star signing Ada Kaleh drops some shimmering excellence here. Hard to categorize, its live drum loop and Fela Kuti vox almost have you imagining some lost Tony Allen colab, but the electronics lean into something altogether more otherworldly and surreal. It's a head turning track that'll stand proud amongst other genres and styles, making it a very versatile piece of music for both club and radio DJs alike.

Beacon From Mars And Other Psychedelic Side Trips

This is the USA Kaleidoscope, not to be confused with the UK band of the same name. They combined Middle Eastern exotica with West Coast psyche.

                                                Tangerine Dream - 2024 Reissue

Look through any self respecting quality music publication or web site and peruse through a list of the most important and influential psychedelic albums of all time and you can be pretty sure to see KALEIDOSCOPE’S ‘Tangerine Dream” ranked high up there, along with your ‘Sgt Peppers’, your ‘Forever Changes’ ‘Satanic Majesties Request’ ‘Axis Bold As Love’ ‘Odyssey & Oracle’ and ‘The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators’……..

This seminal album of quintessential English psychedelia is one of the most highly prized artifacts that define the psychedelic genre and like some of the most highly collected and prized albums from that time, mint copies can now go for way in excess of £1000.

Thus given the record`s rarity & collectability, matched to the recent explosive interest in all things psyche, garage & underground, you would be excused for thinking that this slice of perfect late 60’s progressive underground pop would have been given the full reissue and remastering treatment already. Surprisingly though, you would very much be mistaken. But to those of you who know the checkered history of Kaleidoscope this will perhaps come as no surprise!?!!

Thankfully after 3 years of painstaking detective work, chance encounters with Universal archivists, heavy negotiations with major label legal executives and some good fortune, we are delighted to announce that this record will finally not only get its first proper official reissue in over 5 decades, but thanks to a lot of pure persistence it can now be presented to its listeners in the manner in which it was supposed to have been heard, following the discovery of a batch of the original master tapes that were languishing in the vaults of Universal that have laid largely unheard for 50 years!

Furthermore following a couple of shared festival billings at Austin and Copenhagen Psyche Festival, with another legend of the scene, Mr Pete Kember aka SONIC BOOM of SPACEMEN 3 fame, Sonic has been holed up in his Lisbon studio, painstakingly remastering the album from the original ¼” tapes.

The remastering of these ¼” tapes though is only part of the story, as along with the discovery of these a significant number of ½” tapes and other material was also discovered which is penned for a future release when the band`s entire works will be presented in a definitive boxset of all four of their studio albums (including all their Fairfield Parlour recordings) plus BBC Sessions, live recordings, alternative takes, new mixes, unreleased tracks and material from the band`s own archive including pre-Kaleidoscope demos when they were known as both The Sidekicks and The Key.

Kalev is a five piece band based in London. They produce dark electronic guitar music, made with pounding rhythms and white noise. The band has come from the rethinking of Stockholm Syndrome, a Lichfield-based post-punk band set up while the members were half way through high school. Kalev have a wide range of influences, including: At the Drive-in, Nirvana, Squarepusher, Tool, Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds, Radiohead, Led Zepplin, Kraftwerk, The Micronauts, The Doors, Joy Division, Aphex Twin and Depeche Mode.

                                                    Jaakko Eino Kalevi

Finnish songwriter, producer, multi-instrumentalist and tram driver Jaakko Eino Kalevi follows up on the global exposure of his essential Beats In Space release with a glorious LP of oddball pop songs-not-songs. Vivid, sensual and technicolour, the self titular LP sees the musician meld elements of disco, new wave, R&B, house, dub, pop and prog into a record that’s adventurous, original and full of charm. "JEK" opens the LP in emotive synth-soul form before fan favourite "Double Talk" bathes us in drifting new wave beauty. "Deeper Shadows" fuses pastoral prog melodies with a slick Timbaland style R&B groove and dub production, while "Say" and "Night At The Field" update "More Songs About Buildings And Food" for the modern listener. On "Mind Like Muscle", Destroyer, The XX and John Cale get nice and intimate in Jaako's mind, before he takes a leaf out of Ariel Pink's book for "Don't Ask Me Why". The final three tracks on this kaleidoscopic listening experience take in the leftfield disco of Arthur Russell, Laurie Anderson experimentalism and Jean Michel Jarre's "Souvenirs De Chine" to round off a career defining LP.

Martin says: Jaakko Eino Kalevi's output has drawn comparison with Aerial Pink's, but that would be a little misleading. There is irony in the music, but not just that; he undeniably loves the crisp, faultlessly crafted blend of soft rock, electronic pop and Euro-disco he is affectionately sending up. Perhaps it wouldn't be Finnish if it weren't shot through with a hint of melancholy, but that only adds to its strange charm.

Barry says: There really is no way to narrow down Jaakko Eino Kalevi's music into genre, there is a propulsive edge to all of it but the propulsion ranges from drenched, Balearic groove to dusty minimal-wave percussion and swooning pop.

Finnish psych-pop voyager Jaakko Eino Kalevi returns with a new release called ‘Dissolution’ via Weird World. Never one to repeat himself, these seven songs come from a sparkling new constellation in the Kalevi universe as he draws deep for a set that explores the cosmic implications of a life being well lived. On this release, Jaakko teams up with the Berlin- based Taiwanese singer Yu-Ching Huang; as he sings in his native tongue, she responds: “I won’t make contact / I enter the limit state.

In this age of constant connectivity, switching off has become one of the great luxuries of modern life and it’s one of the reasons Jaakko Eino Kalevi has called his new album ‘Out Of Touch’. He explores what he calls this “essential, blissed out” state on his second album for Weird World as he meditates, in classic Jaakko fashion, on the merrygo- round of the daily grind.

"A World Of Peace Must Come is his masterpiece. That was fantastic." - Brian Wilson
"'Be Still' is the only song I've ever heard that made me want to be a better person." - Brian Barr, The Seattle Weekly

"The only other artist as pure as him is Captain Beefheart." - Bill Bentley

Stephen John Kalinich was born in Endicott, New York and grew up in Binghamton. In his early teens, he stared writing poems and articles about World Peace. He first came to California around 1964, fell in love with it, and promptly transferred from Harper College in upstate New York to UCLA.

Kalinich found himself immersed in the vibrant anti-War culture of late 60’s California, often writing songs and poems against the War. He found a musical partner and kindred spirit in Mark Lindsey Buckingham. They cut a demo for a track called "Leaves of Grass," inspired by the famous Walt Whitman poem "Leaves Of Grass", and Kalinich started taking demos around.

In the mid 60s, it was either at Brother Records or while pumping gas that Kalinich first met the Beach Boys. He hit it off with Brian, Carl and Dennis right away. As the first artist signed to the Beach Boys new label Brother Records, Carl Wilson produced a record for him. His first songs that saw release were "Little Bird" and "Be Still," which he wrote with Dennis and were released on the Friends album. His relationship with Dennis would lead to a number of further collaborations and Kalinich / Dennis Wilson co-writes, including: 20/20 - "All I Want To Do," Hawthorne, CA - "A Time to Live in Dreams", Pacific Ocean Blue - "Rainbows," and Bambu - "Love Remember Me.”
A World of Peace Must Come was recorded at various LA studios and Brian's house in Bel-Air in 1969. The tapes were promptly lost, not to be heard again until our discovery of them in 2008. Following the CD-only reissue in that year, this is the first time this timeless snapshot of an era and an ethos will be available on vinyl for Record Store Day 2014.

                                                          The Closest Thing To Silence

In August 2022, Australia-based, French born fourth-world music legend Ariel Kalma was invited to participate in BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction series of special collaborations. The program pairs artists that have not previously collaborated to create new music together. Kalma was quick to suggest working together with two musicians whom he has never met – the International Anthem recording artists Jeremiah Chiu & Marta Sofia Honer, whose critically-acclaimed duo debut Recordings from the Åland Islands had been released just a few months earlier. Kalma sent an invitation to Chiu and Honer, which was received with great enthusiasm.

Chiu had been a fan of Kalma’s work for a long time, even citing him as a major influence on his approach to electronic music composition. After meeting their goal of 20 minutes worth of music for the program (which was four pieces total), the three musicians were satisfied in what they would present, and sent along their work to the producers of Late Junction; but simultaneously they felt like there was much more to be said, more work to be done. There were several pieces that they had nearly completed that weren’t sent for inclusion in the radio program, and there were many ideas for refining those that had. The three musicians collectively agreed that they would continue work together and try to push the music further. The Closest Thing to Silence is the result of their efforts to take the collaboration further.

The borders between London’s musical tribes have always been porous. For Yussef Kamaal, the sound of the capital – with its hum of jungle, grime and broken beat – has shaped a selftaught, UKtipped approach to playing jazz. In the states, the genre’s longrunning to-and-fro with hip hop – from Robert Glasper to Kamasi Washington – has reimagined it within US culture. On Black Focus, Yussef Kamaal frame jazz inside the basssaturated, pirate radio broadcasts of London.

Taking inspiration from the anything-goes spirit of ‘70s jazzfunk, on albums by Herbie Hancock or the Mahavishnu Orchestra, it’s a loose template with plenty of room to experiment. The pair, made up of Yussef Dayes and Kamaal Williams (aka Henry Wu), have had little in the way of formal training. Instead, their musical tastes – and approach to playing – are indebted to Thelonious Monk’s piano as much as the drum programming of Kaidi Tatham.

“It's all about the drums and the keys,” Williams says. “Not to take anything from anyone else, but that's where it all originates from: the chords, the rhythm of the chords and the drums.” Born out of a oneoff live session to perform Williams’ solo material for Boiler Room, it soon became a project in its own right. Coming together as Yussef Kamaal, they played a series of live shows where little more than a chord progression would be planned before taking to the
                                                            stage.

Bringing that unspoken understanding to the recording sessions (engineered by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics), the unplanned, telepathically spawned grooves retain the raw energy of their live shows. “It's not so much about complete arrangement, it's more about flow,” Dayes says. “A lot of the tracks are just made spontaneously – Henry will be playing two chords, I'll fill in the groove and we'll just leave the arrangement naturally.” Both hail from South East London, crossing paths in 2007 as teenagers playing their first pub gigs around Peckham and Camberwell. Dayes drums for cosmicallyinclined, afrobeat outfit United Vibrations, while Williams – on top of drumming and playing keys in different incarnations over the years – has made waves with his solo, synthdraped house 12"s for muchfêted labels like 22a and Rhythm Section.

Moving in the same circles but never playing together previously, rhythm underpins an innate musical understanding. As Williams explains, “The way we approach it is all about the energy and the feeling. We just get in there and we feel it out.” Drawing influence from all corners of London’s shapeshifting musical makeup, the sound of Black Focus is distilled – or focused – down to the core interlock between drums and keys.

Kamazu's certified kwaito floorbanger from 1991 is one of the high watermarks of the genre. Featuring those heavily swung, slowed house drums, big Roland bass and those infectious township vocals that make the hairs on your neck stand to attention - it's further bolstered by a piano line that'd have half the Hacienda erupting into action. Such is the might and crossover potential of this dancefloor hit, certified godfather of disco, Dimitri From Parish take it upon himself to offer us a tasty reworking of the track across a whole side of wax for Afro Synth - tasty!

On the flipside we find another dope kwaito gem "Mjukeit" taken from Kamazu's 1997 CD, "Ghetto Style". Perhaps not as mainroom as its predecesor, its deep gliding subs, sweltered vox and relaxed, seriously swung drums recalls a thousand fiery sunsets dancing on the outdoor stage of your choice surrounded by like minded souls all succumbing to the unifying power of the house music groove.

                                                            A Mythology Of Circles

‘A Mythology of Circles’ is the new album from Brooklyn-based composer and musical artist Faten Kanaan, her first to be released on Fire Records. Cyclical patterns and 'variation through repetition' are central to Faten’s music. Harmony and counterpoint are composed intuitively and treated as narrative tools- with sound, silence, and the resulting mystical relationship between notes used as gestures to tell a wordless story. The album is separated into a ‘dusk to evening’ side, and an ‘underworld/dream-state’ side; highlighting the myths of Ishtar, Inanna, Orpheus, Persephone, and others.

Inspired by cinematic forms and mythological story structures: from sweeping landscapes and quiet romances, to patterned tensions and dream sequences; Faten brings an earthy, visceral touch to electronic music. In symbiosis with technology is an appreciation for the vulnerability of human limitations and nuances.

All the sections are played in real time, neither looped nor sequenced- allowing for subtle changes to unfold. The use of VST sampled choral voices in this album embodies the forlorn state of technological acceleration, and the desire to return to a vulnerable human sound. The album art also explores a complicated relationship with technology: the statue comes from a series of digital replicas, returning in its last stage to a more intimate and handmade feel.

Composed, produced and mixed by Faten Kanaan, the album was mastered by Heba Kadry (Bjork, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Julianna Barwick).

What we have here is the spiritual and logical culmination of an artist working hard at their already considerable skills in the intervening years. It's a stunning work of scope, beautifully transportive and haunting.

Faten Kanaan's fifth LP Afterpoem is a mysterious, smudgy, bittersweet, and uniquely playful album. Deeply melodic, it continues her poignant exploration of counterpoint as a narrative tool.

From the repetitive structures of modern minimalism and early music/baroque influences - to more languid textural ebbs & tides, there's a warmth in her use of electronic instruments that gives the album a curiously timeless feel. Composing intuitively, her music has often been described as 'strange', mostly because it creates its own world - one that isn't easily categorised.

The album's title refers to the haze of a poem's intended meaning being abstractly fleeting and barely graspable. Glistening threads of understanding still touch us - the poetry becoming intimately personal, and no further literal explanation is needed.

"I find pleasure in music as a language that nudges and hints. There's a potential that lives in things left unsaid... meanings drifting in and out of focus... hovering like spirits. It's a romantic and earnest album... of yearning for lost places and people, while still looking out at the world with tenderness and humour".

Its intensely absorbing music for solitary listening. Shut the curtains, light a candle and get totally engrossed. Just no animal sacrifice please - leave that to the ancients.

Kanaan from Oslo, Norway is back with their 2nd album in 2020. Following the impromptu Odense Sessions with Causa Sui guitarist Jonas Munk released in February, Double Sun is a different beast all together: Treading the same path as their 2018 debut Windborne, Double Sun is a studio effort in the best sense of the word. Perfectly balanced on the edge of dynamic improv, throbbing beats sizzled in scorching fuzz and topped off with deeply layered soundscapes. This album sees Kanaan reach a new plateau. Kanaan presents a unique perspective to psychedelic rock, painting with a wide palette that includes jazz and post-rock. Double Sun devotes as much energy to sonic colour as it does to groove and energy. The spirit of experimentation is everywhere: From the savory, pastoral sounds of opening track Worlds Together, to the soaring exploratory paths of the two-part title track. In the creative process, Kanaan dived deep into the possibilities of the studio, adding intricate layers and twists and turns to these tunes: acoustic guitars, percussions & synthesizers embrace and enhance the Norwegian modern day version of a power-trio. One of the lo-fi house OGs that's broke out and found fame outside of the genre - namely on Arcane; here he returns to his roots for a four track cruncher for the vape generation. "Needless To Say" gets split across two parts. The first part is a steady climb, tumbling toms and ratcheting stabs creating a sense of excitement and tension; leaving what's around the corner purely to our imagination. Part 2 seems to up the tempo and the deepness in equal measure; straying away from the obvious and expected to plummet heads down into the speaker stacks for an amphetamine-fuelled fist-pumper of the highest order! I can feel the sweat flicking across the dancefloor now! "See Outside" offers from shimmering, reflective beauty, a contrast to the jagged and full throttle energy of side A, this revels in a seductive charm that'll get people moving closer to each other on the dancefloor. "Ray" concludes by cleverly matching Guy Called Gerald's "Voodoo Ray" to mechanized, slow-n-steady cerebral beats, flipping the mood of the original entirely and coming out with summat pretty heady and narcotic. Ace!

Tab-era Monster Magnet, Sessions Era- The Heads… purely visceral and pummelling workouts of a krautrock and pschedelische (surely the most overused term of now..but finally in its right place) from these masters of the art.

Guest guitar from fellow sike-head John McBain on the final half of the 40 minute trip which makes up sides 3 and 4.

k3 takes the autobahn, veering left past the sun and heading on till morning. There are no black holes 'cos we're in it: just do the half. The colours will come back with the dawn.

Properly hypnotic stuff here, perfect for phasing out in the sunshine.

Robert Hampson from Loop/MAIN was also going to be at the festival and so it seemed a good opportunity for him to join kandodo for this gig along with Wayne and Hugo from The Heads (who are also the Loop rhythm section as well as part of kandodo). Rehearsals were set up in Bristol and the gig in Roadburn was a couple of nights later and that is the recordings gathered here for "Burning The (Kandl)" with running order changed to help fit over these 2 hefty slabs of vinyl. So get ready for a total immersive trip through a psychedelic vortex . A glorious head nodding voyage into inner space where the vast churning of fuzzy guitars / keys / bass and drums phase in and out of focus with your inner core.

Released in an edition of 500 and pressed on heavy black vinyl - Burning The (Kandl) is presented in a special lenticular effect outer sleeve.

                                                                        Change The Show

Following a chance “no frills session” with psych-rock duo Sunglasses For Jaws at the band’s Hackney studio, Miles’ fourth solo album ‘Change the Show’ really began to take shape. “I saw myself in their energy, but also their taste and their knowledge of music,” Miles explains. “It was the first time I’d felt old!”

Opening with the honest soft croon of ‘Tears are Falling’, the album is a joyous ride from start to finish and features a surprising, but spectacular appearance from Grammy-nominated singer Corinne Bailey Rae for a duet on ‘Nothing’s Ever Gonna Be Good Enough’. ‘Don’t Let It Get You Down’, the first track released from the record, is Miles Kane at his very best: energetic, infectious and full of swagger, the track opening with a sample from fellow Wirral alumnus Paul O’Grady. It's an album that best represents Miles himself: charmingly authentic, and like nothing else you'll hear in pop music today.

“This album was born out of an intense period of self-reflection; having all this unexpected time on my hands,” Miles said of the last 18 months. “I wrote songs about big highs, big lows, daydreams, true friends and deep feelings. I learnt to let the future unfold of its own accord, while staying true to myself and that has led to what feels to me like a really uplifting album!”

A record for fans both new and old, ‘Change the Show’ is the Miles Kane album we’ve all been waiting for. The apotheosis of his previous works, incorporating those classic rock and glam influences, but focusing more closely on Motown, soul, and Fifties R&B.

                                                                          One Man Band

Miles Kane returns with a blistering new album One Man Band, out August 4th on Modern Sky Records. The album’s first offering is the exuberant indie banger ‘Troubled Son’.

Opening the record, ‘Troubled Son’ is raw, pop-driven indie, made for festival stages. “It’s about the struggle we all have in life,” Miles said of the track. “Sometimes we have our shit together and sometimes we don’t. This is me acknowledging my faults and my fears and showing the journey I’m taking as I try to figure it all out.

Miles returns to his guitar hero best on One Man Band as he focuses on big hooks and even bigger anthems. Sharp, infectious, urgent and packed to the brim with singalong moments, it’s Miles on the top of his game. A deeply personal record, Miles returned to Liverpool to work on the album, finding himself reflecting on his journey.

“Making the album back in Liverpool with my family really helped to bring this out of me,” Miles said of the writing process. “We left no stone unturned. Sometimes you have to go backwards to go forwards, and this album helped me rediscover why I picked up a guitar in the first place. This album is like a brand new, yet somehow familiar leather jacket. A comforting melting pot of all the music that has inspired and continues to inspire me every day.”

Asymmetrical indie-rock, full of soaring melodies and Kane's distinctive vocal drawl.

As the crew of the Bebop, they make up a ragtag team that chases down the galaxy's most dangerous criminals. They'll save the world... For the right price!

                                                                              Runes

First ever vinyl release of this unique, dark and sparse, tribal, minimal synth, drone, trance, new age recording from the mysterious Kano. Previously only issued as an obscure cassette back in 1986 which is now much sought after. Runes is much darker and brooding compared to its new age peers of the era. Drums, metalophone, synths and more leads you on a deep inwards trip via damp, cold and foggy caves to the ancients. Runes is an extraordinary musical experience. Kano, described as ’a trance musician from Colorado’ on the original release, was Don Campbell in real life and the Runes cassette was eventually issued under his name too.

FullTime Production present the new vinyl edition of Kano's "Turn It Up / Unconditional Lover" featuring remixes by Danny Krivit, Les Inferno, Fresco Edits and Dr Packer.

2001: A Garden Of Personal Mirrors

Wave Theory Records release a limited edition vinyl of a single written for Stanley Kubrick’s masterwork, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The song, subtitled “A Garden of Personal Mirrors”, was written in 1968 by the film’s marketing strategist Mike Kaplan. Kubrick proposed it immediately following an unsuccessful pitch by MGM Records, who wanted to release a single to tie in with the film, and amid reports the Beatles were also writing a song. Presented by Wave Theory as a historical release, 2001: A Garden of Personal Mirrors adds a new chapter to the film’s mythology. This limited edition 7” vinyl will be available for the first time ever on 26th November 2021

2001 is infamous in the annals of film music history for the way that Kubrick abandoned Alex North’s original score in favour of classical and popular pieces that have become synonymous with the movie. Following a digital release last year that caught the imagination of the film’s fans, Wave Theory is now releasing a limited edition vinyl that will give the opportunity for soundtrack aficionados to own a piece of movie history.

Mike Kaplan explains, "The Single's intent was to capture the different responses 2001 was generating from audiences and the media, the many levels of interpretation and appreciation, from its hypnotic visuals to its metaphysical illuminations. We also wanted to instil curiosity among audiences who had not yet seen what was becoming a cultural phenomenon.”

Co-founder of Wave Theory Records Dan Jones said, “Attempting to write any music for Kubrick would be a daunting task, as Alex North — and now we discover Mike Kaplan — were both to discover. Both of them are examples of the complex creative interactions that Kubrick’s films distilled.”

                                                                                  Lucy Kaplansky

                                                                                  Every Single Day

Lucy Kaplansky has developed into a songwriter of great humanity and vision and this is, without doubt, her best album yet. Revealing and intimate and a real joy to return to again and again.

                                                                                    Vikesh Kapoor

                                                                                    The Ballad Of Willy Robbins

Following a spur-of-the-moment cross-country trip with a pair of fiery European girls, Vikesh Kapoor left school for a brief yet inspiring stint as a mason’s apprentice. The America he had previously known resided narrowly between his childhood home in rural Pennsylvania and the New England university he left home for. Alongside his parents’ own immigrant struggles, these experiences quickly witnessed Kapoor to the scope of the American dream.

A few years later, Kapoor performed at Howard Zinn’s memorial service in Boston, in front of Zinn’s family and colleagues (including Noam Chomsky). Roused by Zinn’s lifelong battle against class/race injustice, Kapoor spent the next two years in Portland, Oregon working on his full-length debut record. The Ballad Of Willy Robbins, a concept album loosely based on a newspaper article, chronicles the brutal but hopeful story of a working class man who slowly loses everything: ambitions, health, family and shelter. It’s a worker’s tale, less specific to the blue-collar life as it is about anyone struggling to make something of themselves.

Co-produced by Adam Selzer (M. Ward) and features Nate Query (Decemberists, Black Prairie), Jeff Ratner (Langhorne Slim) and Birger Olsen (Denver).

THE NEW YORKER: “a series of sharply etched portraits of struggling Americans that points back along a road of socially conscious songs. Woody Guthrie is standing at the head of that road”

More exquisite house music from Toytonics label boss, Kapote. Imbuing the fun and party ethos of the label, the producer drops four tracks that traverse sample-based disco-house, old skool 90s flavours, tuff Nu Groove styled thumpers and on final track, "The Slide" more contemporary flavours a la GAMM and Local Talk.

It's a brilliantly dazzling and high gloss affair, with the veteran producer demonstrating no lack of skills behind the dials. But rather than get bogged down on EQ fidelity, the quest for the perfect kick drum, or synthesizing the latest cranium splitting sounds; he simply takes cues from the decades of party music that proceed it - disco and early house music, particularly from the US, and coalesces it into his own funky and friendly style. Don't let this irreverence fool you though - this is top drawer tackle for the club, disco, car, or after party; and well deserved of a place in your house section! Recommended.

The label's quality control department do a sterling job of making sure there's absolutely no tripe across its catalogue. Kapote's on the dials for this latest joint and it's another sure fire winner for the house fraternity.

House music, but with a hefty disco and Brazlian influence. Think Lumberjacks In Hell or MCDE, but with more playing and less sampling. A big favourite with Harvey, Gerd Janson, Blessed Madonna, Kenny Dope and, incidently, the aforementioned Danilo Plessow (MCDE).

Slick, full fat production bolster the picked guitar lines, weighted bass guitar, flailing congas and sunshine keys perfectly. A natural successor to late 70s Lofty disco that'll keep dancers moving for decades to come... Recommended!

Well, the boogie bombardment continues this week with an all-star release from label stalwart Andre Espeut, who's joined by synth revivalists Kappekoff and Reggie Got Beats for the sweet, sparkly single: "Sugar". Ripe with squiggly lead lines, explosive slap bass, Jomox drums and soulful lead vocals from Esput. Comes with instrumental.

Band shares members with Australian band Surprise Chef. Karate Boogaloo are proud to present Hold Your Horses, a mesmerizing new long-playing disc of original instrumental tunes from Melbourne, Australia's most dedicated. Sitting at the core of Melbourne's burgeoning movement of cinematic instrumental soul, Karate Boogaloo's roots go deep into the fabric of the DIY soul idiom. A mainstay of the Melbourne underground over the last decade, their now sought-after series of LPs delving into hip-hop sample culture and its relationship to funk music, The 'KB's Mixtapes', are evidence of their long-standing contribution to the development of the Melbourne cinematic soul sound.

Henry Jenkins, Hudson Whitlock, Callum Riley, and Darvid Thor have been playing music together since their playground days. Meeting as high school preteens, these four friends explored the teachings of the great small combo instrumental bands à la Booker T & The MG's and The Meters. With these lessons in one hand and their characteristic sense of goofy humor in the other, the ensuing 15+ years saw Karate Boogaloo develop the kind of shared musical language that can only be built through countless hours spent together existing as friends and musical allies. Karate Boogaloo's singular bond shines brightly on Hold Your Horses, the second album of original Karate Boogaloo compositions. Following on from the cult classic Carn The Boogers (College Of Knowledge Records, 2020), Hold Your Horses is a document of KB's distinct interpretation of instrumental funk.

A bona-fide journey from start to finish, each tune melds seamlessly into the next, deftly creating a world built on moments of cinematic tension, whimsical melodies and eerie discordance and underpinned by undeniable super heavy funk. Hold Your Horses respectfully builds on a legacy of soul music whilst remaining unimpeachably unique and authentic. Recorded and mixed by bassist Henry Jenkins, the mind responsible for the sound of the entire College Of Knowledge catalogue (Surprise Chef, The Pro-Teens, Let Your Hair Down, Karate Boogaloo), Hold Your Horses employs a methodology for writing and recording music that mirrors KB's long relationship together.

"It's always instrumental, and it's always recorded live. We have a strict no overdubs policy," Jenkins explains. All of the songs were written collaboratively in the studio, with no pre-prepared material being brought in by any member. It's a process specifically designed to maximize the strengths of the band and their relationship to one another; KB's MO is enabled by their innate understanding of one another as people and musicians. Stylistically, links can be drawn to the deep funk of the late 60s and early 70s, certain examples of European film music and new wave of instrumental soul. The restrained instrumental palette is limited to drums, guitar, bass and organ, establishing a distinct and consistent tone throughout, yet the use of dynamics, space and finite execution in the playing carves the experience, keeping the listener glued to their headphones from start to finish.

The artwork, created by organist Callum Riley aka Drez, is a stunning visual representation of the 12-track medley. To add to the experience, the LP cover creates an interactive optical art experience, straight from the brain of someone uniquely equipped to convey Karate Boogaloo's sounds into a visual representation. Karate Boogaloo is a quartet greater than the sum of its parts; and the parts are very, very good.

Every chord and beat works to deepen the pensiveness of Geoff Farina’s impressionistic lyrics, that explore the emotional complexities of nostalgia. Collected here is the band’s spacious, adventurous, and sometimes difficult second half presented in fastidious detail. This five LP box includes the trio’s Unsolved, Some Boots, and Pockets albums, a first time vinyl pressing of their Cancel/Sing EP, and recently unearthed rehearsal recordings of two unreleased tracks, all annotated by Geoff Farina’s account of Karate’s adulthood and Andy Hong’s insights into the trio’s recording process.

The quiet moments on Karate’s millennium busting fourth album carry much of that old, unbridled intensity, braided into subdued jazz melodies and slowcore restraint. Karate’s transition into rock maturity bore supple fruit with Unsolved, presented here with three previously unreleased songs.

When you create from a blurry place you can go places further than you’ve ever been. I think we both were excited to go far out.”

Andy says: The voice of the Naughties teams up with the producer to the (cool!) stars and the result is stunning! Karen O has been rather quiet lately. Her lo-fi solo record ‘Crush Songs’ (2014) was preceded by the least interesting Yeah Yeah Yeahs record so far (2013's ‘Mosquito’) so it’s really refreshing to firstly hear her in a new context, and secondly, singing some flipping good pop songs again. The title of this record loosely translates as “luxury first” and yes, it does what it says on the tin! Dangermouse mines a similar sonic seam to his cinematic soundscapes with Daniel Luppi (2011’s ‘Rome’) whilst of course staying true to his downtempo template. But with sweeping strings and beautiful blends of funk, pop, soul and disco, all luxuriously spacey and deliciously swoony, you’ll be in for a nice surprise: the mix with Karen’s distinctive voice really does work. She’s never sounded better.

'I Am Greta', the intimate Hulu documentary by Swedish director Nathan Grossman, tells the story of teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg through compelling, never-before-seen-footage. Starting with her one-person school strike for climate action outside the Swedish Parliament, Grossman follows Greta - a shy student with Asperger's - in her rise to prominence and her galvanizing global impact as she sparks school strikes around the world. The film culminates with the extraordinary wind-powered voyage across the Atlantic Ocean to speak at the UN Climate Action Summit in New York City. The synergy between the two composers with very different backgrounds as well as the blend of classic instrumentation and usage of electroacoustic elements led to a unique, compelling score: The score consists of a string octet, modular synthesizers and a voice instrument built by Rebekka of 25 unique singers sampled in their full range.”Rebekka and Jon’s dynamic score to 'I Am Greta' is huge and intimate, uplifting and melancholic, and manages to carry the emotional nuance of Greta's story. The score forms a musical parallel to Greta's journey and narrative voice throughout the film. It’s energy, urgency and emotional depth reminds us that the time for climate action is now.” - Nathan Grossman, director of 'I Am Greta'.

Beginning in 2011 following the death of two relatives in Aleppo, K Á R Y Y N left her native LA for Cherry Valley, upstate New York to process her grief in seclusion. During the 18 months she lived in Cherry Valley, K Á R Y Y N wrote two songs for "The Quanta Series". The first was a visceral, emotional piece recorded in one take called "Today I Read Your Life Story 11:11". The second, a musing on impermanence and understanding the impact of our choices called "Segment & The Line".

As she travelled, she found inspiration everywhere, leaning into her own familial legacy, feelings of grief and love and observations on human interaction. A deep connection to her lineage is a concurrent theme in K Á R Y Y N’s work, with an interpretation of traditional Armenian folk song "Ambets Gorav" present on the album plus a beautiful choral patchwork called "Mirror Me" providing an introspective break in the album - a track about 'facing yourself, the good, the bad; searching for the parts in us that have been lost.'

Rife with changes in pace and unexpected slabs of withering gloom before launching once again into a euphoric resolution. It's a gorgeous LP and one that reveals more on every subsequent listen.

Like a more brazen Beta Band (similar 60's references, similar use of beats) or prime-time Happy Mondays, some of these songs are like chants or mantras that get right under your skin. It's powerful, low-slung-funky, effortlessly catchy fun!

Includes bonus remixes from the likes of Clap! Clap!, Daedelus and Africaine 808.

Deeply impressed by the music of Kasai Allstars, French-Senegalese director Alain Gomis drew inspiration from their music, and from the voice and character of their singer Muambuyi to write and direct his new fiction movie, entitled 'Félicité'. The film's eponymous protagonist is a proud, free-willed woman who sets out on a breakneck race through the streets of electric Kinshasa to save her son. Her profession: singer with the Kasai Allstars!

The band wrote and performed most of the soundtrack, and appears onscreen playing their own part. Muambuyi's voice is omnipresent, and is being heard every time Félicité (played by Congolese actress Vero Tshanda) sings in the bars of Kinshasa, backed by Kasai Allstars.

The 'Around Félicité' album includes the film's main pieces, performed by Kasai Allstars and by the Kinshasa Symphonic Orchestra (who specially arranged three works by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt), alongside new tracks by Kasai Allstars, as well as interludes consisting of fragments of dialogues and sound bites taken from the soundtrack.

'Around Félicité' comes with a companion piece: 'Félicité Remixes', a collection of ten remixes of Kasai Allstars tracks by electronic music producers from Europe, North America and Africa, including reworks by Clap! Clap!, Daedelus and Africaine 808. The long-awaited second album by the mindblowing, mythic collective from Kinshasa, DRC is a collection of over 100 minutes of wild, trance-inducing, raw intensity. Their 2008 debut album ‘In the 7th Moon...’ made a lasting impact on the imagination of artists such as Animal Collective, Juana Molina, Shackleton and Deerhoof as well as music lovers everywhere.

The core of Kasai Allstars consists of fifteen musicians from five bands, all from the Kasai region of Congo, but originating from five different ethnic groups. They each have their own culture, language and musical traditions, which were always thought to be incompatible until these musicians decided to transcend their differences and work together. Kasai Allstars draw their songs from festive / ritual music and the lyrics tackle matters such as sorcery, social commentary and traditional wisdom.

‘Beware the Fetish’ presents a broader scope of Kasai Allstars’ music, probing deeper into the musicians’ repertoires and styles, with the help of a large array of guests. The band use their trademark mixture of traditional instruments (slit and buzz drums, xylophones), electric guitars, and distorted thumb pianos with DIY amplification (such as the giant bass likembe which adorns the cover). Some songs showcase rocking & intertwining guitars, others include a higher proportion of acoustic percussion or likembes, and they all feature arresting vocal performances by a cast of charismatic singers.

                                                                                                                Kashmere Stage Band

The word is out The Kashmere Stage Band was the greatest high school band - ever. The bandleader at Kashmere High School, Conrad Johnson, transformed a bunch of rough-hewn Houston high schoolers into a band that could compete with any in the nation – professional, or otherwise. Forget high school bands, we're talking about sixteen year old kids who would give the JBs a run for their money! The Kashmere Stage Band released a total of eight albums and three 45s on Johnson’s Kram label. The band’s best tracks are collected on Texas Thunder Soul 1968-1974

Folk-psych folks will be psyched about this bizarre collaborative excursion. A gloriously subdued affair, largely comprised of simple guitar arrangements, stripped-down percussion and soft singing (male and female) punctuated by bouts of power tools and gated feedback. The somber psychedeliosis is embedded in a loose atmosphere of echo and electronics recalling the beautiful ambiguity of Deux Filles; or Joao Gilberto if he fell off a Durutti Column into a vat of mescaline. Duulicious!

Rather than strictly a live act, they’ve acted as an incubator for a fresh crop of local talent, helping hone the voices and talents of individual members, while collectively advancing like a phalanx. Each ‘Kat’ writes their own solo material, and everyone contributes and works together on each project, feeding off the communal energy. Leading to the group’s upping collaboration for Jazz Is Dead, Katalyst has poised themselves as the next breakout stars of Los Angeles’ rapidly expanding Jazz universe - a small army of creative firebrands, each burning more brightly together.

Kate NV’s WOW offers listeners a prismatic shift in perspective and scale, a parallel dimension in which the mundane becomes funny, unfamiliar, and altogether sensational. Turning the contents of her 2020 album Room for the Moon upside down and spilling them across a floor checkered with intrigue and surprise, Kate places sound, object, and ritual under the microscope to magnify the delight hidden in plain sight of everyday life.

WOW is Kate Shilonosova’s fourth full-length release as Kate NV in six years, and third for RVNG Intl. Her prolific musical output aligns with a highly attuned aesthetic and a deep commitment to visual world building. WOW is one of many of these worlds in which music is fully saturated with color, deeply tactile and textural. Shiny, sproingy, plastic. Where Room for the Moon embraced structure (abstractly speaking) and veered pop, WOW happily abandons conventional song shapes, parsing the experience of musical time into ecstatic fragments.

It’s difficult to imagine a more fitting album title: pure exclamation, an organic pitch of delight leaving the mouth, with no clear etymological links. On Room for the Moon, Shilonosova’s voice was layered and lyrical, with sweeping and urgent melodies. WOW finds her as a peripheral purveyor of high jinks, peeking out from the corners, commenting on her surroundings in non-verbal, and arguably non-human, utterances. Instead of employing lyricism, Shilonosova steps outside of language, and rewards us with a gum ball machine of textures: soda fizz and wind-up teeth and scraps of bubble wrap become comically huge, as if heard from an insect’s perspective. Words are tasty plosives, onomatopoeias, percussive chirps and one-liners, and singing serves as another form of what Shilonosova refers to as “funny tiny sounds.”

In a definitive and "excellent homage to a star who left this planet too soon" (Questlove), the life, career, tragic death, and evolution of Aaliyah into a music legend are explored-now updated with new material featuring in-depth research and exclusive interviews. By twenty-two years old, Aaliyah had already accomplished a staggering amount: hit records, acclaimed acting roles, and fame that was just about to cross over into superstardom. Like her song, she was already "more than a woman" but her shocking death in a plane crash prevented her from fully growing into one.

Now, two decades later, the full story of Aaliyah's life and cultural impact is finally and lovingly revealed. Baby Girl features never-before-told stories, including studio anecdotes, personal tales, and eyewitness accounts on the events leading up to her untimely passing. Her enduring influence on today's artists-such as Rihanna, Drake, Normani, and many more-is also celebrated, providing Aaliyah's discography a cultural critique that is long overdue.

"There's no better way to pay your respect to R&B's true angel than to lose yourself in the pages" (Kim Osorio, journalist and author of Straight from the Source) of this "dazzling biography" (Publishers Weekly) that is as unforgettable as its subject. This book was written without the participation of Aaliyah's family/estate.

Elon Katz (White Car, Streetwalker) aligns perfectly with Diagonal in a prickling debut vocal release, 'The Human Pet'; his first original solo issue in four years, containing an intensely personal, puckered perspective on electronic dance music and experimental pop.

Structured around a schizoid yet coherent juncture of EBM, IDM, curdled rock music and art school techno-pop, 'The Human Pet' is riddled with idiosyncratic notions on “cryptic topics like rebirth, nullification in stream speed adaptivity, dependence and wealth inequality” to portray a unique intellect and sonic vocabulary operating at the crux of his expressive powers.

The project began circa 2012, around the time of Katz’s relocation from L.A. to art school in Chicago, and cocks a canny snook, both thru candid lyrics and obsessive edits, back towards the megatropolis where he was born and spent much of his youth. It can therefore be considered an attempt to better understand himself in relief of big city manias by channelling and parsing his own stubborn outsider personality from the madness.

To our ears it feels like a concise dissection of Chicago’s industrial history and Californian digital psychedelia; probing at their twisted, fluoro guts with the inquisitive nature of a mad scientist or psycho-analyst between the yelping, warped and hyper-piquant yacht boogie of 'The Rhino Powder of New Sensitivity' and a heavily affected dislocation of harmonised pop hooks and whirring body mechanics in 'Clean Crash'.

It all occupies a strange perch between introspective and exuberant, veering from mid-‘90s AFXian pop rephlexion in 'You Are Alone', to signature Diagonal tackle in the gas-chugging EBM-pop force of 'The Human Pet', whereas Unarmed twists into fractal phantasia, all of which maintain a thread of logic that belies the record’s vintaging period of refinement and distillation.

There can be little doubt that this is one of the most complex, rigorous and distinctive in Diagonal’s catalogue. Closer attention is required. File amidst records by Luc Van Acker, Aphex Twin, Savant, Powell…

I didn't technically think it was bad when I first heard it, but definitely didn't think it would have the longevity and growth it has. Whilst the press release said it had an Aphex vibe (I can see the similarities), I find it much more akin to the most nihilistic Nine Inch Nails period :The Downward Spiral. Turgid and claustrophobic saw-wave synths mingle with (what I can only guess is intentionally) obtuse vocal shards. Slowed down, pitch-shifted samples and bit-crushed drums make for a challenge.. but one worth persevering with, more difficult than anything on this list but almost definitely more rewarding. A glittering diamond at the end of a rewarding trek.

His first song, "Testarossa Autodrive", was an instant success, and was followed by two singles. In 2007, he was chosen by Daft Punk to open their now legendary "Alive" tour. In 2011, his track "Nightcall", produced with Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo, became the theme song for the film "Drive", and consequently a worldwide success. Kavinsky's first album, "Outrun", was released in 2013, followed by a collaboration with The Weeknd on the song "Odd Look".

“Cameo” is the third and last stepping stone which lead to Kavinsky’s long-awaited new album “Reborn”, out March 25th. Its raging funky beat and syncopated synths offer the most perfect case for American sensation Kareen Lomax to deliver a warm though exhilarating vocal performance. While recording it, Kavinsky had this special project to record a sequel to his hit song "Nightcall", which after all sounded almost like a movie scene. This sequel would be called "Zenith".

Therefore, like in the original, he composed a duet between a girl and a man, but reversed: the verse is sung by the woman, the chorus by the man. Prudence (formerly from the successful duet The Dø) is the female vocalist, Morgan Phalen (who sung with Justice and is the vocalist of the band Diamond Nights) plays the male character along with a special guest: the saxophone. "Zenith" showcases Kavinsky's romantic side on a muted and futuristic sound.
