    Neev

    Katherine

Since the release of her debut single in 2019, Glaswegian artist Neev has built a reputation for discovering beauty in the small details. Her talent for storytelling and worldbuilding has earned her early support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Sian Eleri and BBC Radio 6 Music’s Tom Robinson, as well as a sync on BBC drama Waterloo Road & Love Island. On April 28th, the now London-based musician is set to release her debut album, Katherine, a collection of intricate indie-folk songs that pack a lyrical punch. Buoyed by the experience of engineering, mixing and producing her 2021 EP Currants almost entirely alone whilst the country was in lockdown, much of Katherine was recorded at Neev’s home studio and the homes of a host of talented musician friends.

“It was really important to me that the album wasn’t only a group of songs but that it would also be a learning curve for me, and it was! I learnt so much about arrangement, frequency, the range of my voice and the way I like to construct songs and write,” she says. Katherine carries all of the trademark sounds of Neev’s previous releases. Acoustic guitars, soaring string arrangements and layered backing vocals can be found throughout, but this time they’re bigger. Standout single ‘Green’, a song about envy, calls to mind artists like Marika Hackman and Fenne Lily. The track was born out of the relief Neev felt being reunited with her band post-lockdown. “It just fell out of me,” she says. “I think my brain just wanted to write a big, fun track for us to play together,” she says. Every song on Katherine is tied to the idea of identity. “Each song explores the different facets of an individual,” explains Neev. “Them as someone’s child, someone’s sibling, someone’s partner. Someone as the gender (in my case, female) they identify as, someone as the job they do,” she continues. “In certain scenarios we play a role, at work we’re professional, at our family home we play out our function. Each track adopts a different role. For example, ‘The House’ is told from the point of view of a classic 60s housewife, the song paints them as unsatisfied, frustrated and pessimistic. However, that’s probably not how they feel all the time but it is when they’re playing their role”. ‘Fast Patterns’ is a real highlight. Written from the point of view of an imperfect friend, the song is about not knowing how to be there for someone in their darkest moments. It asks how far you should go for a friend in need and at what point you need to take a step back. Similarly, ‘Built Your Body’ is an open-hearted ode to finding resilience, the lyrics trace the different ways in which people get through the day. Neev’s passion for theatre and film has been integral to her development as a songwriter. Coming from a long line of actors and directors, she’s been an avid theatre goer from a young age, with one-person plays being her favourite. “I always find stirring solo shows inspiring as I love monologues and communication centred stories. They give me a huge amount of energy and ideas for lyrics,” she says. In fact, ‘Seawall’, a song about being stretched too thin, was actually inspired by a one-man play of the same name, written for and starring Andrew Scott. The song, like the play, features the recurring motif of a hole in the middle of the stomach. The album’s title encapsulates the record’s essence. “Katherine is a common name in my family and it’s also my middle name,” says Neev. “So whilst it has a personal meaning, it also exists in a few different ways. I named the album ‘Katherine’ because it touches on the themes of family, identity and the different identities one person can hold within themselves.”

Second self-recorded album from this Chicago punk quartet. Chicago punk band Negative Scanner return to the fray with their second long-player, the cheekily titled Nose Picker. Once again recorded by the band themselves in their Chicago practice space, Nose Picker opens with a question; “Is there anybody there?”, which acts as both a legitimate query as well as a rallying cry. Negative Scanner make it clear that they want your attention, as opening tune “T.V.”s stutter step guitar riff leans into an lean and mean, 4-on-the-floor churn. The rest of the album follows suit, either with raging punk snarl (”History Lesson”, “First Blood”, “Let it Die”), or angular, emotive jagged guitar riffage (”A Cross”, “10 Million Kids”, “The Only One”), punctuated by vocalist/guitarist Rebecca Valeriano- Flores’ voice, teetering between a full throated roar and a plaintive monotone.

Her lyrics are insular, spitting accusatory and inquisitory barbs inward, talking to anyone who listen. Is there anybody there? Despite the darkness on the surface, Nose Picker has an unmistakable air of whimsy, and a sense of humor, punctuated by the very literal album cover, and by the sound of a toilet flushing at the album‘s closing. The past two years have seen the band step out of the Midwest DIY spaces and basement shows and tour the USA and Europe, support UK band Sleaford Mods on select dates in the UK and the USA and standing toe-to-toe with the underground’s finest acts, including Sheer Mag, Protomartyr and more.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Hi-octane punk and roll, snarling vox, screaming guitars and fuzzed-out overdrive mix brilliantly into a dynamic, exciting force to be reckoned with. Negative scanner have hit the nail on the head with this one, just what you need to brighten up these hazy summer days.

Debut album from Chicago band formed from the ashes of Tyler Jon Tyler. Furious & snarling post-punk. Negative Scanner have been destroying rooms in Chicago’s vibrant DIY since 2012, earning well-deserved accolades as one of the cities best live bands. Their electrifying debut album finds the band taking on all comers; guitarist / vocalist Rebecca Valeriano-Flores’ gutteral howl & lyrics have gained confidence over the course of the band‘s previous two singles in 2014 (their debut on Trouble In Mind & it ’s follow-up on Tall Pat Records). The band (guitarist Matt Revers, bassist Nathan Beaudoin & drummer Tom Cassling) have evolved into a lurching, post-punk tornado furiously spinning into near-chaos but never leaving the band’s capable control.

The album’s opener “Ivy League Asshole” sets the tone - feral & ragged guitars chug over the rhythm section & Flores’ manic yelp spits out lyrics borne out of confusion, agression, domination & submission to life, living, lovers & beyond. The album‘s eleven tracks in 28 minutes fly by the lsitener, threatening whiplash but begging to be replayed. Negative Scanner ’s s/t debut was recorded by the band themselves in their practice space, mixed by Mike Lust ’s Phantom Mobile Unit & mastered by Australian legend Mikey Young (Total Control/Eddy Current Suppression Ring).

        Neil Diablo

        Hypermagic 004

Hypermagic's aim is to showcase and support those people who make us dance every weekend. The DJs, promoters, crews and friends who keep the city's music scene alive & kicking.

For the fourth mix tape in the series, we have invited our good friend Neil Diablo to contribute to Hypermagic with a C120 tape. Resident at Manchester’s much-loved El Diablo’s Social Club since 2003, an ex-Piccadilly Records staffer and the label head-honcho at EDSC Recordings and To Rack & Ruin, Neil Diablo has been a pivotal figure in Manchester's music scene during the past 20 years. His skills behind the decks and in-depth knowledge of all things house, disco, afro and italo have earned him slots at festivals like Love International, Glastonbury, Gottwood and clubs all over UK and Europe.

Neil recently launched a new club night called High Emotion and Hypermagic 004 is a reflection of what you can find in his virtual record bag nowadays.

          Fred Neil

Tear Down The Walls (with Vince Martin) And Bleecker & MacDougal

Fred Neil is one of those characters whose enigmatic personaes often overshadow their music. His story resonates with the sort of details familiar to fans of Syd Barrett, Nick Drake or Tim Buckley. Bags of talent, a maverick spirit and TOO MANY DRUGS. Neil had a superb rich baritone voice and these early sixties recordings capture his charismatic presence and show his compelling songwriting abilities. His recent death from cancer ends speculation that his 25 year silence could end, but the quality and richness of this disc will do much to satisfy those interested in discovering this huge lost talent.

            Alan Neilson

            The Birthday EP

Debut EP from this singer songwriter from Dudley. The first two tracks, "Wish You Were Her" and "Birthday" are beautifully simple, melancholic songs featuring just acoustic guitar and Alan's powerful emotive vocals. "Moses & Abe" takes a different direction altogether with cut-ups, samples and skitish electronics.

              Nell & The Flaming Lips

              Where The Viaduct Looms

Where the Viaduct Looms comprises nine Nick Cave cover versions with vocals and instrumentation by 14-year-old Nell Smith and instrumentation and production by The Flaming Lips. The album was mastered by Dave Fridmann at Tarbox Road Studios.

This inspiring and heartwarming story begin when Smith, originally from Leeds (UK), moved to Canada and first met Wayne Coyne at the age of 12 at The Flaming Lips’ headline show at the Sled Island Festival, Calgary, in 2018 with her family. Nell had already attended several Lips shows and was a regular at the front of the stage, dressed in a parrot costume and screaming out the band’s songs. Coyne soon began to notice the kid in the parrot suit and sang a David Bowie cover directly to her at the show in Calgary, with Nell singing every word back.

A musical bond formed with Coyne staying in contact with Nell and her father Jude as she learned to play guitar, while their creative relationship began to flourish when she started to write her own songs.

When a planned trip to record with the band in Oklahoma had to be cancelled due to covid Coyne suggested Nell record some Nick Cave songs and email them to Oklahoma to be backed by the band. Coyne chose Nick Cave because Nell didn't know him and wouldn’t have preconceived notions as to how to sing the songs.

                Nic Nell

                Glow

A self-producing artist, Nic plays all his own instruments and does his own artwork. He also performs solo, with a mix of synths and loops, sometimes with a bass guitar thrown in; he does the DIY thing with a distinctive balance of imagination and precision. A rough demo of this singles A-side, "Glow" featured on the "No Pain In Pop" compilation in 2007 (also featuring No Age & Crystal Castles) and the Gee Wiz blog voted his remix of Friendly Fires in their Top 5 of 2007 alongside Foals & Late of the Pier. FACT selected his electro-banger "It's a Trance Off" as one of their March tunes of the month. His fans include Of Montreal, The Maccabees & Sportsday Megaphone, the latter two having asked him to play support on various UK dates. Word is obviously spreading, as the last few months have seen him city-hop through Geneva, Berlin and Paris.

                Nelson

                I Say You Can't Stop

Nelson have been hailed as 'the best French band to join the music scene in over 10 years'. Their music can be described as a cross between Joy Division, The Rapture, and Animal Collective. They promise explosive performances where aggressive guitars compete with delicate electronic sounds.

                  Neno Exporta Som

                  Deixa A Tristeza

Neno Exporta Som’s super-rare compacto 8206; ‘Deixa A Tristeza’ from 1971, has been high on the want-lists of Brazilian record collectors and DJs for years. This was intensified, along with a wider cult-following, following Floating Points dropping the gem on his amazing ‘BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix’ back in 2015. Mr Bongo included ‘Deixa A Tristeza’ on our Record Club Vol 1 compilation. Following that came many requests to release it back on its original ‘compacto’ 7” format. So finally, here it is for all to enjoy. By sheer coincidence, also released in 1971 on Copacabana Records is Agnaldo Rayo’s ‘Suma ma’. A fairly un-known record which has the potential to become an underground classic. This epic track has a psyche break-beat drum and bass groove intro - just asking to be sampled! Along with lush string and horn arrangements and a soaring female/male vocal duet.

                    Agnaldo Rayol - Sumauma

In Portland, OR, in 1978, a radical form of artistic expression some refer to as “punk” or “new wave” was beginning to take shape, and at the heart of this legendary movement was the powerful all-girl punk group the Neo Boys. Though they were an active band for just five years (1978-82), teenage sisters Kt (bass) and Kim Kincaid (vocals), Pat Baum (drums) and guitarists Jennifer Labianco and Megan Hengtes forged a place for women in the growing punk rock scene, and redefined gender roles in the 80’s movement of rock and roll. They regularly shared bills with The Wipers, opened for Nico, and played their first show with Television. Calvin Johnson has been working with the band members to track down the missing tapes of their recordings through a rabbit hole of Northwest basements and closets, and after twenty years of effort, the result is Sooner or Later (KLP247). A comprehensive double LP collection of Neo Boys recordings from 1977-1982, including the long out-of-print 1980 7” EP (released on Greg Sage's Trap Records), and 1982 self-released EP Crumbling Myths. Sooner or Later also contains recordings, early demos and live sessions that have never before been available to the public.

Home-grown hip-hop talent from Manchester's own Neo_101. 'Me & You & The Truth' sees the artist mixing clattering trap percussion and swooning synths with main-man Danny's rapid-fire heartfelt vocal passages.

After the confessional drug-themed drive of 'Armageddon', we get the snappy, honest and hard-hitting 'Date With The Devil', focusing on true-to-life stories of life and temptations in Manchester. Though the seriousness of the vocals never wane, we get a variety of subjects handled with passion and tact, as hard-hitting as the thumping percussion and throbbing bass working out below the main lyrical themes.

'Cure' for instance is brilliantly melodic but is very much the downbeat trap-tinged number, with minor key changes and sidechained digital pads, all pulled forwards with the syncopated backline. On the flipside, we get the minimal instrumentation and pitched vocal glitches of 'Caged', as effective as the more momentous numbers, but handled with just as much tact, despite it's different approach.

                    Neon Blonde

                    Headlines

Neon Blonde is the alter ego of Blood Brothers vocalist Johnny Whitney and drummer Mark Gajadhar. Unlike the often frantic and frenzied songs of the duo's other band, Neon Blonde is a much more eclectic, dancing and melodious venture, which touches on the art-rock tunes of Brian Eno and early David Bowie.

                      The Neon Judgement

                      [PIAS] 40

The Neon Judgement has always been one step ahead. Coming from Leuven, a small town near Brussels, where Dirk and Frank shape their own sound from the start. They released a spellbinding series of albums that offered a bold variety of tracks. “Chinese Black”, “TV Treated” and “Miss Brown” were (and still are) pure underground hits at the height of new wave. It is therefore, no coincidence that they are rightly considered pioneers of the EBM genre.

                          Neptune

                          Msg Rcvd

On 'Msg Rcvd', Neptune employ an array of new techniques and methodologies to explore indeterminacy and difficult phenomena such as feedback. Moving away from guitar feedback, this record features amplified drum feedback as well as the introduction of two new ‘feedback-organ’ machines. Developing their career-long interest in arranging and deploying found sounds, Neptune continues to use their sonically peculiar guitars built from pieces of found metal, but add to this new devices to pick and arrange sound out of the air: interrupted radio broadcasts. On msg rcvd the listener becomes eerily aware that trash is not just the junk on the street and in alleys, but it is also the invisible radiation that surrounds us and permeates us, and, in an expanded sense, the very material of which our bodies and experiences are made. One man’s trash, another man’s Neptune.

“Amazingly, the band constructs their instruments out of circular saw blades, bike parts, gas tanks and miscellaneous scrap metal found in the trash. But make no mistake, Neptune isn’t aping past metal bangers like Test Dept and E. Neubauten. At times the group rocks hard, creating disciplined almost danceable grooves, combining This Heat’s ascetic experimentalism with Cop Shoot Cop’s percussive wallop. Homemade electronics flesh out the sound, ricocheting off complex rhythms, adding texture and dynamics to Neptune’s singular, highly musical approach.” – Paul Lemos, The Big Takeover.

Two tracks from NERD's back catalogue reissued by the good folks at TNT Rap Classics. "Lapdance" was released at the turn of the millennium to humongous acclaim. It even found its way onto the Swordfish soundtrack! Featuring that quintessential boombap, combined with tongue-in-cheek lyrics, soulful chorus and super tight delivery - a formular that would define this era-defining group.

"Run To The Sun" on the flip was taken from their 2001 LP, "In Search Of...". Resplendent with sunny vocals, more of that stop-start boom-bap and intricate production nuances that their ever-growing horde of fans would associate with this pivotal and influential act.

                            My E.P.

The kings of nerdcore are back for another round. Sort of. "My E.P." is a collection of catchy pop-punk masterpieces recorded over the past few years. "My E.P." was originally released by My Records (Lagwagon singer Joey Cape's label) two years ago, but is now unavailable due to the label's folding last year. The band weren't entirely happy with the sound of the original disc, so they went off to Orange Whip Studios in Santa Barbara, California, and had resident engineer / producer Angus Cooke remix the six original tracks, along with the four new tracks. This is it. More clever-as-hell pop-punk classics, just waiting to be discovered!

                              Silje Nergaard

                              At First Light

More cool jazz coming from Scandanavia. Silje Nergaard takes the styles of singers like Astrid Gilberto, Hoagy Carmichael and Stina Nordenstam and blends it with a jazz trio. Then gives it a modern edge with added brass for colour and a very contemporary production feel.

Nérija are the septet of contemporary jazz luminaries, Nubya Garcia (tenor saxophone), Sheila Maurice-Grey (trumpet), Cassie Kinoshi (alto saxophone), Rosie Turton (trombone), Shirley Tetteh (guitar), Lizy Exell (drums) and Rio Kai (bass). Rooted in friendship, Nérija is a collective whose breakneck shifts in tempo and style rely on a deep understanding of mood, temperament and expression, a solid show of trust that extends beyond the usual bonds between musicians.

Recorded in the boat-shaped confines of London’s legendary Soup Studios and produced by Kwes, the overarching goal with Blume was to simply capture the rawness, warmth, joy and the spirit of their relationship and performance. One of the recording aims was to channel the feel of Teo Macero and Stanley Tonkel’s records with Miles Davis during his Columbia years, thinking “forward” as they did but for this band, capturing the controlled chaos and frame it with a timeless elegance.

"Blume" is a truly breath-taking collection of compositions that perfectly encapsulates everything Nérija; vibrant, engaging, infectious and truly current. For just over an hour, they take us on a sprawling wonderful journey, arriving at what is a majestic body of work; their personal and collective experiences and inspirations over the last half decade or so.

Emily says: New London jazz supergroup Nérija have debuted their radiant, horn driven sound in 2019 to great acclaim. ‘Blume’ expands on the foundations they established earlier this year with their self titled EP. Teeming with lush harmonies, syncopated riffs and plenty of afrobeat shuffle, it is sure to impress fans of Kokoroko, Ezra Collective and Maisha.

With a mixture of horns, beautiful arrangement and upbeat, bold rhythm they really have owned their sound. Hopefully lots more to come from Nérija…

                                  Neu!

                                  50!

NEU! announce the release of a brand new boxset marking the 50th anniversary of their first record, with a Tribute album featuring reworks from The National, Idles, Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Mogwai, Fink, Stephen Morris (New Order) & more.

NEU!’s influence is undeniable. Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother, who had both previously been members of Kraftwerk, are a product not only of West Germany but of Düsseldorf. Like other experimental bands of the late 60s and early 70s gathered under the banner of Krautrock, they were driven by a mixture of political and artistic imperatives to reject the cliches and conventions of orthodox, blues-based Anglo-American rock and create a music that was, formally, West German in origin.

NEU! are one of the great, belated success stories of rock music. Their influence is widespread, international, continued. Ian Curtis (Joy Division) played the rest of the group NEU! as part of their weekly education classes, David Bowie often spoke of his love for the duo and called them “Kraftwerk's wayward, anarchistic brothers”, in the 1990s Stereolab paid NEU! homage in their Franco-Germanic avant-Europop and further co-signs come from Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Thom Yorke, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Sonic Youth and Placebo.

Release of the NEU! album "86", which Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother originally recorded in 1985 / 86.

'I'm thrilled about the release of the album NEU! '86 which Klaus Dinger and I originally recorded in 1985/86, but left unfinished back then and which led to some unfortunate problems between Klaus and myself in the 90s. I now completely reworked the album from original multitrack and master tapes, and unearthed a few yet unknown tracks which are essential for a full understanding of what Klaus and I focussed on for NEU! in the mid 80s. It was my aim to present Klaus Dinger´s musical strengths and visions just as much as my own ideas. The best musical result was to be my only guideline, not the ego. All during the emotional process of reworking our album Klaus was on my mind and I contemplated what he would think about my decisions. I was very relieved and moved to hear from his heir, Miki Yui, who contributed many valuable ideas to the making of the box set, that she was pleased with the result I presented with the album NEU! '86'. - Michael Rother.

Rother and Dinger with their third (and for many years) their last studio work together. The insistent rhythms and the phased guitar and drums are as timeless as ever and in this new, official remastered edition the music seems as vital as it did when it came out all those years ago. This is probably their finest album, essential stuff!!

                                        Neu!

Fresh after leaving Kraftwerk in the fall of 1971 for what they perceived to be a lack of vision, guitarist Michael Rother and drummer Klaus Dinger formed their own unit and changed the face of German rock forever. Dinger's mechanical, cut time drumming and Rother's two-note bass runs adorned with cleverly manipulated and dreamy guitar riffs and fills were the hallmarks of the "motorik" sound that would become the band's trademark. Neu!'s debut album was driving music for the apocalypse in 1971.

Martin says: It is almost impossible to do justice to an album like this. The wellspring of the genre that came to be known as Krautrock - and possibly its finest hour - emerged from Dusseldorf in 1971, part of a cultural watershed marking the point at which a nation began to look to the future instead of over it's shoulder. The very definition of 'modern'.

South London based producer and multi-instrumentalist Neue Grafik announces his new EP 'Foulden Road Part II' from his Neue Grafik Ensemble band, released 25th March on Total Refreshment Centre. The sequel to their impressive 2019 release 'Foulden Road', Neue Grafik continues to incorporate 100% live takes with the ensemble, as well as solo productions that reflect Neue Grafik's past work with both the Rhythm Section and 22a labels.

Neue Grafik explains, "This EP is a reflection of the social context which surrounds me" – created in a year of much social isolation as well as political unrest, 'Foulden Road II' explores the complex feelings that he found himself battling. He adds "In 2019, we released 'Foulden Road Part I', which was a transitional album, exploring a new culture and navigating between two worlds: Paris and London. 'Part II' is a bit darker, closer to realness with a sprinkle of hope. I couldn't have predicted that I'd finish it encased in my flat, between four walls, in December 2020 after a year of lockdown, Brexit, George Floyd protests, and without London's brilliant culture mesmerising my mind. Everything was sad and closed. Hills were difficult to climb. But it also gave me the time to work hard and deliver this second part of Foulden Road, pushing it forward".

Combining an array of influences — from London, to Paris via New York, Nigeria and Cameroon — with well-measured confidence, ' Foulden Road II' allows you to reflect on the complexities of the last year, whilst braced with energy and hope to move forward positively. Heavy horns and hypnotic poetry form the backbone record, which will ignite any room. 'Foulden Road II' begins with the grounding poetry of MA.MOYO on 'Black Bodies'. The EP is dedicated to Adama Traoré, a black man who died in police custody in Paris. Neue Grafik explains "His name is not well known outside of France. I was shocked, devastated even, to learn that his story didn't cross the Channel". 'Queen Assa' is a heavily percussive dancefloor-hitter which honours French activist Assa Traoré, (Adama's sister) her family, and her struggle to support all families hurt by police brutality. Broken beat elements flow through the horn accompanied 'Officer, Let Me Go To School', while West London rapper Lord Apex offers an unapologetic and poignantly personal perspective on 'Step To It'.

Released on the Total Refreshment Centre label, based out of Stoke Newington's Foulden Road, the EP is a testament to his versatility as an ever-shifting figurehead. Engineered by Capitol K, recorded at Total Refreshment Centre, mixed by Marcus Linon at Greasy Records and mastered by Guy Davie at Electric Mastering – a significant pillar in Neue Grafik's musical career. Having played a DJ set there in 2017, he was convinced by TRC founder Lex Blondin to start a band after he was heard playing some compositions on the communal piano. After spending a couple of sleepless nights on the living room couch, his first gig was booked in the venue space downstairs a week later. The ensemble was established and he has remained in London ever since.

Neue Grafik Ensemble's musicians include; Matt Gedrych, Benjamin 'The Chief' Appiah, Jack Banjo Courtney, Chelsea Carmichael, Dougal Taylor, Yahael Camara-Onono, Xvngo, Rebekah Reid, Dan-Iulian Drutac, Jamie-lee Glinsman and Zara Hudson-Kozdój.

Neue Grafik hosts The Orii Jam Sessions, an energising weekly jam night at Hackney Wick's Colour Factory, which has become a pivotal weekly gathering, inspired by the likes of Unit 31 and Steam Down.

Debut release on 22a for rising Parisian producer Neue Grafik. ‘Soul Conspiracy’ explores broken beat, house and hip hop and grasps that very distinctive 22a sound fusing classic house beats with a lo-fi boogie feel. DJ support from Alexander Nut, Bradley Zero, Tenderlonious, Dennis Ayler, Lefto and many more - essential! Located in Paris, Neue Grafik represents a generation of artists at the forefront of electronic music. Routing his influences in a heavy 70s feel, his latest EP ‘Soul Conspiracy’ invites the listener to explore a fusion of live and programmed electronic music. Grafik makes good use of live instrumentation on this EP, featuring plenty of Fender Rhodes and lead synth, as well as a sprinkling of live drums and a strong guest vocal from the soulful likes of Wayne Snow. Tunes like ‘Modern Man’ and ‘Thanos Interlude’ adopt an inspired broken beat approach, reminiscent of early Bugz productions, whilst the title track ‘Soul Conspiracy’ has a distinct 22a quality, fusing classic house beats with a lo-fi boogie feel.

                                              Sarah Neufeld

                                              The Ridge

Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in Montréal, Canada. Best known as a member of Arcade Fire, she is also a founding member of the acclaimed contemporary instrumental ensemble Bell Orchestre, and most recently as half of an exciting new duo with renowned saxophonist Colin Stetson. Neufeld counts Bela Bartok, Steve Reich, Iva Bittova and Arthur Russell among the formative influences for her solo work, in tandem with an ear for the textures and sensibilities of contemporary electro-acoustic, avant-folk and indie rock music.

In 2013 Sarah Neufeld released her debut album "Hero Brother" on Montreal's Constellation Records (home of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Colin Stetson), which was produced by Nils Frahm. "The Ridge", Neufeld's second solo album, features performances and production from the likes of Colin Stetson, Tim Hecker and Arcade Fire's Jeremy Gara on drums and synth. This new body of work sees Neufeld moving away from Hero Brother's classical minimalism and sepulchral ambience, and into the world of rhythmic pop minimalism. "The Ridge" employs more emphasis on vocalizations than Neufeld's previous works; the interplay between Neufeld’s voice and violin has become strongly integrated and narrative. Jeremy Gara adds greater layers to the compositions, creating an intense, dynamic atmosphere, and a captivating listen from start to finish.

                                                Sarah Neufeld

                                                Detritus

Composer and violinist Sarah Neufeld is a career-long touring and recording member of Arcade Fire. Her third solo LP ‘Detritus’, confronts anguish with beauty, turmoil with grace, gliding through the present like a dancer mid-motion, reaching through space 'til she's caught.

The album is wistful and emotive, and carries the listener on a journey of euphoric and complex looped violin dusted with mesmeric melody recall. Openers ‘Stories’ and ‘Unreflected’ lead with atmospheric ease, sombre soundscapes and distant, otherworldly vocals. ‘With Love And Blindness’ ups the tempo with remote, dreamlike rhythms that hypnotise and enthrall. ‘The Top’ is elated, but it highlights the isolated strings and poetic loneliness Neufeld is able to convey with them. ‘Tumble Down The Undecided’ and ‘Shed Your Heart’ are climatic in their delivery, full of cascading notes and delays before closer ‘Detritus’ exits with a state of calm, easing back into the shadows and taking with it the vivid textures and images crafted with infinite grace over the course of the album.

                                                  NOTES ABOUT DETRITUS
I composed this album within a larger body of work that was commissioned as a live soundtrack for Peggy Baker Dance Project’s Who We Are In The Dark.

Who We Are In The Dark is a collaboration originating in 2015 when Peggy Baker (legendary Canadian dancer and choreographer) and I were asked to perform a duet together at Fall For Dance North. Peggy chose to choreograph to my piece From Our Animal from my (then) upcoming second album, The Ridge.
Wanting to create something personal for her for this performance, I composed a prelude which began with the words “who we are in the dark”.

There was something utterly compelling about working and performing together.
Coming from different generations (Baker is now 68), we share a sense of intensity, curiosity, and ferocity.
Shortly after our debut performance together, Peggy commissioned me to collaborate with her on a full scale piece for her company. I began composing for this project in 2017, with the solo violin piece, The Top.
Peggy and I were exploring themes of darkness- her take often lived in the macro, universal elements, space, death, while my own exploration at the time was more close up- intimacy and the ego self. I think there was an invisible thread between us from our own experiences of loss and grief.
To say the least, this collaboration and the work we produced has held tremendous meaning for both of us.

Drummer and composer Jeremy Gara (Arcade Fire) joined the collaboration in 2018, adding percussive and harmonic depth to my solo compositions, as well as inputting his own signature style of ambient noise composition and heavy, gripping drumming into the live score.
The work premiered in February 2019 and toured internationally throughout the year, with our most recent performance in Den Hague at Holland Dance Festival in February 2020.

I began distilling the solo compositions into a smaller, album length body of work in the Summer of 2019, experimenting live with solo versions, adding more vocals, and incorporating foot pedal bass synth to my solo live capabilities. This body of work stood out for me, as a further push and refinement of the composition style I’ve been developing for the past 8 years, and as a marker of an intense and difficult passage in my own life.

Over the collective’s past ten albums, Neurosis have invited listeners to join them on the path their music carved. Going beyond the remarkable, neurosis became unforgettable.

This year finds neurosis taking their most dominant step yet with their eleventh full-length, 'Fires Within Fires'. Three decades in the making, 'Fires Within Fires' is a testament both to the history and future of Neurosis. Striking the band's signature balance between light and dark, beauty and repulsion, 'Fires Within Fires' gives due to its predecessors while progressing forward into the unfamiliar and formidable.

For members Scott Kelly, Steve Von Till, Jason Roeder, Noah Landis, and Dave Edwardson, the album is a welcomed companion to what’s now been a 30-year-long trek into the infiniteness of sound and sight coalescing into consciousness. An all-encompassing reminder that transfiguration in sound remains their most commanding and inimitable strength, 'Fires Within Fires' is the next powerful step towards a destination that has long been and continues to be the very heart of "becoming" for the mighty Neurosis.

Barry says: Toeing the line between metal and drone, Neurosis have had a long history of fantastic releases themselves, and on their label, Neurot recordings. Crushing sustained riffage and pummeling slow-core drumfoolery bring to mind post-metal / drone legends Isis or Pelican whilst still retaining their own imitable sound. Von Till's vocals are as present as ever, riding the torrential waves like a shirty but skilled jockey. 'Fires Within Fires' is characteristically confident and impeccably measured, just what we'd expect from Neurosis.

                                                    On Avery Island (Deluxe Edition)

Neutral Milk Hotel‘s explosive 1996 debut, On Avery Island, receives the deluxe reissue treatment with a yellow and red vinyl 2xLP press, complete with revised artwork and cut at 45RPM.

Jeff Mangum’s songs are cryptic and crazed, his ideas fast and furious, and together they force the home-recording concept out of the basement and into a brave new world, a fuzzy masterpiece of experimental lo-fi recording.

Full of rapid-fire wordplay with true and heartfelt experimentation, both ambitious and eclectic, it’s not hard to see why this has been such an influential album.

Part of the fabled Elephant 6 collective, Neutral Milk Hotel won over many a music critic with this cult classic. The band are recognized as one of the most influential alternative acts to come out of the mid-90s and sowed the seeds for everything from anti-folk to the likes of Arcade Fire, Caribou and even Franz Ferdinand

The Collected Works Of Neutral Milk Hotel

The two full-length records that Jeff Mangum made as Neutral Milk Hotel sound both in and out of time. Like translations of a shared subconscious, 1996’s On Avery Island and 1998’s In the Aeroplane Over the Sea give voice to the perennial spirit of youthful epiphany, of beginning to see the world clearly, to process and express it—no matter when you encounter them. With lo-fi indie rock, accordion, singing saw, tape collages, the so-called “zanzithophone” and beyond, Neutral Milk Hotel created an eternal entry into their Elephant 6 scene and an enduring feeling of possibility. Mangum was born in the small city of Ruston, Louisiana, coming of age within the ’80s and ’90s indie and punk undergrounds, a movement of teenagers recording in their bedrooms, sharing zines and trading tapes, listening to hardcore and experimental music on college radio. For all the mythology Mangum’s elusive persona has accrued, it’s the beguiling songs themselves that have resonated so deeply for generations. In 2011, Mangum collected nearly all of the band’s recorded output in a limited-edition box set (self-released under Neutral Milk Hotel Records, a small operation helmed by Mangum and his mother) which is now being updated for wide reissue by the band’s longtime label Merge RecordsBlack matte box is a 2-piece telescoping casewrapped package.

Outer shrinkwrap includes a front sticker with “Neutral Milk Hotel,” and a back sticker listing box contents.

                                                        Hogofogo

Award-winning Swiss producer, electro-innovator and cycling enthusiast, David Langhard celebrates the rhythmic rush of life on two wheels with the release of HOGOFOGO. A four-strong live band, a 15-date UK and European Tour, including a date at The Social, London is announced to coincide with the release.

Inevitable comparisons with Kraftwerk aren’t shyly rejected, but recognised and warmly embraced by Langhard, who cites the band’s 1981 album, ‘Computer World’ as one of the best albums to cycle to, alongside up-tempo tracks by Pixies, The Specials and the canon of classic 1950s rock and roll. Renowned and praised for his work underpinning the recordings of fellow Swiss export, Klaus Johann Grobe, Langhard’s work as an innovative producer is matched by his own, artistic restlessness. A diverse and energetic career has seen Langhard awarded the Winterthur Kulturpreis, acclaimed by city officials in September 2017 for being “an experienced, stylish and versatile musician, whose influence and charisma reaches far beyond Winterthur.”

Touring Europe as a member of Howlong Wolf and Admiral James T, Langhard’s work on the fifth studio album from Neutral Zone extends a trip into synthesised sound that started in 1995 with nothing more than classic Casio SA-5 and Intersound PK-380 keyboards and a tape recorder. The growth of his own DALA Studios in his home city, alongside an ever-developing collection of vintage, analogue recording equipment (alongside the racing bikes) has seen a personal side project take to the fast lane and now, 22 years later, he presents an underground masterpiece.

                                                          Neutrals

                                                          New Town Dream

Neutrals return after five years with album number two, a co-release between Static Shock Records and Slumberland. New Town Dream is thirteen songs of innocence, intensity and observations of everyday life. It’s like a Mike Leigh film lyrically - seeing the world through the eyes of normal people but with music that leans heavily on the TV Personalities, The Times, The Wedding Present and the Jam. The rhythm section is the perfect foil for the spikey and clean guitar work but it’s always the tune that is king with Neutrals. One listen and you are transported into the world of travel agents, bus conductors, kebabs and substitute teachers. It’s the sound of a time long gone but a time we miss and love.

                                                            The Neutrinos

                                                            Pulse Addict

Two new songs from art-rock mavericks The Neutrinos. The Neutrinos have over 100 sell-out London Royal Festival Hall shows under their belts with their critically acclaimed KlangHaus show. They've performed their 'sexy urgent energy' (Time Out New York) in New York, around Canada and mainland Europe as well as numerous UK dates. Hailed as' total game changers' by The Guardian and 'truly outstanding' by The Daily Telegraph, The Neutrinos will be adding dates in 2020 around the release. The site responsive KlangHaus collaboration with artist Sal Pittman has been described as 'the most innovative presentation of live music I've ever seen' by The Guardian and as 'A blast of aural and visual magic' in a five star review Times review. From an almost understated electro opening Pulse Addict builds it's irresistibly, drivingly electro rhythm, deep bass and disarmingly complex drum patterns to an uplifting conclusion with Mark Howe's guitar slashes under Karen Reilly's warm and beguiling vocal. Angels blends a shuffling electronica foundation with guitar lines that encompass hints of an almost rockabilly twang with violent stabs of rock noise to create a uniquely glorious multilayered whole.

Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge is the musical vehicle of Niklas Wandt and Joshua Gottmanns. They released a single - Ich verliebe mich nie - in 2018 and an EP entitled Leben in 2019 on the Düsseldorf label Themes For Great Cities. Now the time has come for the Berlin duo’s long-awaited debut album. The 7 tracks comprising Der große Preis distil the inimitable NB sound which blends velvety synth-pop and crystalline digi-dub, basslines like cubes of glass and whiplash snares. The album title certainly lives up to its name: The Grand Prize. This is adventure time, from wild romance to petty crime – it’s all waiting for you right here.
It was early 2019 when, led by their very own energy coach Ali Europa, the band ensconced themselves in an offseason hotel on Lake Constance to record the album, the same procedure that spawned their afore-mentioned
EP. Between a mothballed breakfast buffet and darkened wood furnishings, bright winter sunshine and lonely nights, Wandt and Gottmanns set about conjuring up smoke clouds. The two protagonists have always been drawn to the most contradictory scenes of local nightlife, indeed the project was born in the underground bars of Berlin. On their lakeside sojourn, they paid a quotidianal visit to the neighbourhood watering hole, where a “No Problems” playlist - parts 1 to 5 - blared out of the jukebox and semi-anonymous players lost themselves in a blur of numbers and fruit as the slot machines whirred and flashed at one end of the room. Many a Euro coin was lost here, but a valuable concentrate seeped through the ether which would allow new tracks to grow. A mixture of dark brown artificial leather upholstery and grey FRG decor and synthetics, cosiness and a railway station milieu, aching heads and excitement. The magic ultimately reached completion in the converted studio suite; a pile of analog synthesizers and rhythm machines, a Studer desk, computer, a vocal booth in the shower. Irregular working  ours, and paradoxical daily routines caused considerable friction and, at times, the two musicians worked separately from each other. When contradictions reach breaking point, how rewarding it is for everything falls into place, just like that. Crack open the champagne, pour an Averna and Arabian Mocha.
One eventful year later, the finishing touches were applied in Vienna 1070, or to be more accurate, in Sam Irl’s home studio and the International Major Label Studio just around the corner: Gelb's Groove emerged from smokeladen nothingness in February 2020. The end product was honed with overdubs, refinements and vocals. Finally, the title track, Der große Preis, based on supercharged lyrics that had been floating aound for some time, was completed with Daniel Meuzard piloting his spaceship-like EMS synthesizer. A month later, cultural activities came to an end and Neuzeitliche Bodenbeläge had their debut album in the bag, like one big promise. Sounds evoking fragrances of yesteryear, yet as young as the present day. Tales of long nights and hot mornings, a market square and leather car seats, all as fresh as the day after tomorrow, having outgrown any scene imaginable. Everything pulsating, every one breathing, the expansion of now.

Utter gees Niklas Wandt and Joshua Gottmanns are back on an N.B. tip, treating us to a weird, wavey and wonderful LP on the rejuvenated Bureau B! Blending Deutsche boogie and wonky electronics the duo conjure up the stickiest synth funk imaginable on an LP packed with treacle dancers and junk food hallucinations.

This split CD has five new songs blasting out with his new band that are bound to make a splash. Split CD with another angry, pissed off, fast hardcore band in Face The Enemy. Think bands like American Nightmare and Poison The Well.

They are artists of a certain distinction who've made name by way of sonic fearlessness, singular talent, and an ability to capture both adoration and imagination while hurling good noise at the void.

Including songs from Gershwin, Cole Porter, Ray Noble, Lionel Bart, Oscar Levant and others, "Nature Boy" is a swinging labour of love.

New Age Doom And Lee "Scratch" Perry

Remix The Universe features new versions by artists from the post- hardcore, experimental hip hop, indie rock, EDM and ambient spheres. From the overdriven electronic blast by Andy Morin (Death Grips), to the dance floor-ready groove of South Africas BLK JKS, to the head- banging fuzz- dub of Quicksand, and Nick Reinharts experimental exploration, the 12 track album sizzles across 44 minutes of new music.

                                                                      Action Battlefield

The quickfire follow-up to the New Age Stepper’s self-titled debut, this set was also issued in 1981. A perhaps more melodic and accessible record than its predecessor, the bulk of the album is versions of tunes sourced from reggae imports of the period, featuring radical interpretations of songs by Bim Sherman, Horace Andy and B.B. Seaton.

Ari Up of the Slits takes more of a frontwoman role here, singing lead on most tracks, and bringing a lot of her own indomitable personality to bear on the material, even breaking briefly into German for her take on “Problems”! It also features the vocal debut of a very young Neneh Cherry on “My Love”. The rhythms are rock solid, laid down by the crack team of Eskimo Fox, Crucial Tony and George Oban, having honed their skills on sides by Creation Rebel and Aswad, with everything expertly dubbed through the mixing desk of Adrian Sherwood.

First time available on vinyl for 40 years, includes download card and printed inner featuring new sleevenotes and interviews by Oli Warwick.

In the tradition of archival On-U Sound compilations of recent years such as the Return Of The Crocodile and Churchical Chant Of The Iyabinghi sets for African Head Charge; and the Displaced Masters LP of early Dub Synidcate rarities, we’ve gone through the tape vaults to put together this special record of unreleased versions and rarities from the white hot early days of the New Age Steppers, the group that launched the On-U Sound label by appearing on both the first single and album.

Highlights include a restored track from their infamous and long-lost 1983 John Peel session (an ebullient cover of Atlantic Starr’s “Send For Me” featuring a beautifully spirited vocal performance from the much-missed Ari Up), the Jah Woosh deejay cut of “Love Forever”, some rare dubs previously only available on Japanese import CDs, all bookended by two very different takes on Chaka Khan’s “Some Love”. An essential set for collectors of post-punk, dub and other outernational sounds.

                                                                          Foundation Steppers

The third New Age Steppers arrived in 1983 and marked a sea change in approach, a warmer sounding record than the two thrilling-but-abrasive LPs that had preceded it.

Part of this was down to frontwoman Ari Up moving to Jamaica and instigating proceedings with a session at the legendary Channel One with Style Scott and a JA horn section, before bringing the tapes back to London for Adrian Sherwood to work on. The other big factor was bringing in Bim Sherman to step up to the mic on several tracks, after interpreting some of his material on the previous albums. His distinctive croon works as the perfect foil to Ari’s own vocal takes, and the resulting album is perhaps the closest the collective got to laying down an album that is identifiably roots reggae, albeit still breaking tradition with colourful synth tones and a post-punk production sensibility.

                                                                            New Age Steppers

The landmark first album on the On-U Sound label, this self-titled debut announced a gathering of the tribes: producer Adrian Sherwood bringing together members of the Slits, the Pop Group, the Flying Lizards and the Raincoats and getting them to collaborate with the likes of the Roots Radics’ Style Scott, Creation Rebel’s Crucial Tony, and Aswad’s George Oban to form a potent post-punk/dub fusion.

The albums two highest peaks are brilliantly realised interpretations of Jamaican classics - Junior Byles’ “Fade Away” and Bim Sherman’s “Love Forever”, Ari Up’s vocal transporting the dread warning and lovers rock vibes to the icy hallways of early-80s London squatland. Elsewhere Mark Stewart marshalls an early version of his “Crazy Dreams and High Ideals” (later re-versioned with the Maffia), music journalist Vivien Goldman voices caustic album closer “Private Armies” (originally a b-side to her Launderette single), and all sorts of strange noises and rhythmic murk bridge the gaps, the instrumentals falling somewhere between a late night studio session at Channel One and the kinds of experimental soundscapes being explored at the time by Industrial Records.

A certified classic of the era back on wax for the first time in 40 years and an essential addition to any post-punk record collection. Last Time I Say Grace

Seven years and a handful of lifetimes ago, New Bums came out of nowhere with their debut album, ‘Voices In a Rented Room’ - a record the New York Times described as “feeling like it’s falling apart.” New Bums took this as a compliment and, thus emboldened, they toured relentlessly in support of the release: criss-crossing the USA in the spring of 2014, with a European run that summer. Then, silence descended, as the Bums withdrew to the place from which they’d mysteriously emerged.

Now, the Bums are back. 2021 finds them with a new album in hand. Following a West Coast US tour in late 2019 it’s clear that the duo of Donovan Quinn (Skygreen Leopards) and Ben Chasny (Six Organs of Admittance, Rangda, etc) are fully reanimated, as evidenced by the songs and sounds of ‘Last Time I Saw Grace’.

Retaining the drunk-dog-locomotion of their debut, New Bums sprinkle a bit of fresh fancy into their signature twin guitarsand- vocals sound, with cleaner recording techniques, further developments in harmonies and a new appreciation for a song with more than two parts, making ‘Last Time I Saw Grace’ nothing less than the perfect progression from the purposefully murky mixes of their debut.

Continuing to embrace an acoustic rock ’n’ roll sound, inspired by artists such as Jacobites, Robyn Hitchcock, Johnny Thunders, Replacements and such, New Bums push the words and the stories to the front of the line, crafting tales with satiric glee on ‘Last Time I Saw Grace’. However, this world of empty perfume bottles, bodies tied to masts and moving onward to devastation (after the bottle on the table pulls out a gun) feels much more Gombrowiczian dreamscape than drunken night on the town. Yes, everything is wasted but this is an existential wasteland rather than a substance-laden one. This combination of arch Californian post-aristocratic melodrama with torn and frayed acoustic guitars opens up a new genre entirely, one those at Drag City are tempted to call Rent Control Romantic.

                                                                                TRACK LISTING

The New Creation were a five piece ensemble made up of family members Robert James Randle (Aka Rasheed Shakoor Sr) his son Keith Randle (aka Rasheed Shakoor Jr) their nephew/cousin Mel Houston. Mel’s stepfather William Cooper (aka Wali Ali) and a fifth unrelated member Wayne E-2X.
The creator of The New Creation was William Cooper a guitarist who had previously worked with Norman Whitfield at Motown and had toured with The Undisputed Truth and The Jackson Five. He had also been employed by HB Barnum as part of Areatha Franklin’s touring band an association that would be relevant in The New Creation’s story.

The concept of The New Creation began sometime during 1973 when Robert James Randle penned the song “The Fish Song” ( credited as Robert 51-X) and William Cooper penned the song “Elijah Knows” amongst other material that never really got past the demo stage. Adding teenage cousins Mel Houston (Bass Guitar) and Keith Randle (Conga drums) and Wayne E-2X , The New Creation began performing through their affiliation to the African America political and religious movement , The Nation Of Islam with no lesser a person than Muhammad Ali, as a support act to his Celebrity Boxing Promotion Tours. They also toured as a support act to one of Philadelphia’s most well known soul groups, The Delfonic’s.
During the summer of 1974, under the tutelage of HB Barnum, The New Creation entered the Devonshire Recording Studio’s in North Hollywood to lay down the basic tracks of the above two songs with HB later adding the horn arrangements. The group pressed 2000 copies (plus a later 500) on their own Salaam label. They initially began to seek out radio airplay, unfortunately this wasn’t to be too forthcoming as the majority of radio stations considered “The Fish Song” to have been recorded as a commercial song , (which the group had no intention of) and demanded extortionate fees to promote. Therefore The New Creation were left with no choice but to promote their own product which they did by mail order and appearances throughout Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver (Colorado), Cleveland and New York selling their 45, for $5 each complete with a homemade promotional brochure.

With the groups growing popularity came the need for more rehearsals which sometimes lasted till three in the morning the teenage members of the group parents feared this would compound upon their High School work and so pulled them out of the group. They were replaced briefly by older members before the group broke up for good.

The New Creation’s “The Fish Song/Elijah Knows” is now a highly regarded and sought after 45 with sweet and harmony soul collector’s in Europe and it’s native USA.

Influenced by bands like Oasis, The Cure and The Clash, Ryan writes gritty, assured rock sounds which the band describe as the sound of 'the Midlands calling'.

Recorded in September 1968, it draws together many of the key streams that had developed in British jazz in the preceding years, and also presages much of what was to come. Notwithstanding the line-up, which includes some of the very best British jazz musicians directed by an inventive and ingenious leader in Neil Ardley, the session features pieces written by the most distinctive jazz composers active in Britain at that time alongside idiosyncratic interpretations of works by John Coltrane and Miles Davis. And it’s all captured beautifully by engineer Howard Barrow and producer Tony Reeves and it features a stella cast of some of the greatest musicians, not just from that era or genre but beyond; Jack Bruce, who would become one of the founding members of Cream, Barbara Thompson, Ian Carr, Michael Gibbs, Dave Gelly, Dick Heckstall-Smith and Jon Hiseman, who went on to form one of the greatest jazz/progressive/rock bands – Colosseum.

'Breaks...' marks a new era in the band's sonic landscape by topping their unique syncopated grooves with group vocal stylings. Band tested, fan approved. After a major US festival tour, instead of flying home to England, they diverted to El Paso, Texas, from where they made the short journey to the outskirts of the border town of Tornillo. Sonic Ranch is a residential studio in the middle of a huge pecan orchard, and this was the setting for the band’s seventh studio album, Breaks from the Border. “This group was one of the few bands to draw the festival’s jam, funk and hipster crowds to one stage.” - Jambands.com.

Formed in Bradford in 1980, New Model Army's beginnings were inspired by Northern Soul, Punk Rock and the incendiary atmosphere of the times. Since then, they have had a long, creative and eventful journey. They have been massively influential in 'post-punk', 'folkrock', 'political-rock', 'goth', 'metal' and all kinds of musical sub-cultures but they have steadfastly refused to belong to any club or style.

Members have changed over the years and musical styles have evolved but at the heart of the band Justin has remained, along with a distinct and sincere belief in the power of music to inspire and effect change on both a personal and political scale, locally and globally.

'From Here' was recorded earlier on the tiny Norwegian island of Giske at the beautiful Ocean Sound Recordings studio and reflects the spectacular isolation of that environment yet has profound messages for the world we all live in and the times we are experiencing. The album was mostly written in just two months and recorded in only nine days and is the follow up on the two hugely acclaimed albums Between Dog And Wolf (2013) and Winter (2016). New Model Army decided to work again with Lee Smith and Jamie Lockhart, with whom they have developed a productive relationship over a few years and who persuaded them to leave a lot of the details of the music to spontaneity.

“This album has a feel that is different to our other albums, but it still contains all the elements that characterise our peculiarly unidentifiable music – perhaps even more than ever. And “From Here” was an obvious title. The record belongs to a very special place and a particular time – what is happening in the world, where we are as a band and where we are as people.”

                                                                                        New Model Army

Known for their unique blend of punk rock, post-punk, folk, alternative rock and all kinds of musical sub-cultures, New Model Army refuses to belong to any club or style. Formed in Bradford in 1980, the band's lineup has changed over the years, with Justin Sullivan being the constant and central figure. They have released numerous albums and continue to tour and record music, maintaining a dedicated fanbase. Their music often addresses themes related to social and political issues, personal struggles, and the human condition, making them a significant presence in the alternative rock and post-punk music scenes. The 2019 studio album “From Here” ranked # 13 in the UK Album charts, and the 2023 live album “Sinfonia” hit #1 in the UK Music Video-Charts, making it the highest charting album in the band’s history.

Described as "Dark Motown" by Justin himself, “Unbroken” features a diverse collection of tracks that touch on topics ranging from social and political commentary to deeply personal reflections. The album is a powerful and emotionally intense body of work ranging from rebellious tracks as “I Did Nothing Wrong”, to contemplative songs like “First Summer After”. With this album, the band continues to push the boundaries of their signature sound while staying true to the themes that have made them a force to be reckoned with in the music world. “Unbroken” is the first studio album since 2019’s long-player “From Here” and the 16th studio album of the band.

He rented a room in his hometown of Trollhättan and borrowed some equipment. He spent six months there and at the end of it had enough material for his forthcoming album, "Verse Chorus Worse". This single is the first taster from the album and it's a great little pop song, less raucous and punky than his Division Of Laura Lee stuff, but still with his distinctive guitar sound.

For the celebrated show ∑(No,12k,Lg,17Mif) New Order + Liam Gillick: So it goes .., New Order deconstructed, rethought and rebuilt a wealth of material from throughout their career: familiar and obscure, old and new.

The album was recorded live on 13th July 2017 and includes the full show and encore plus 3 additional tracks recorded over the residency to give listeners a full representation of the breadth of material performed.

Created in collaboration with visual artist Liam Gillick, who has previously presented solo exhibitions at venues such as Tate Britain and MoMA in New York; and orchestrated by composer-arranger Joe Duddell, a fellow son of Manchester and a frequent collaborator with the band, the live show was performed by the band with a 12-strong synthesiser ensemble from the Royal Northern College of Music.

The catalogue is given a renewed and invigorated twist, showing another side to an already venerable set of classic songs. An essential piece for any fans, and another reason New Order retain the status they've held for so long.

On this record New Order took the solid songwriting of "Lowlife" and made a sort of sister album. The rocking songs were heavier and the electronic ones even more beautiful. They were mostly split into what used to be the old Side 1 and Side 2, with the career highlight "Bizarre Love Triangle" opening the latter. This, "All Day Long" and "Angel Dust" make a gorgeous run of sweeping electronic pop songs that pointed the way to the slick majesty of "Technique" which was to follow.

The big single from the proceedings was "Crystal," which gave the group another #1 on the Hot Dance Music / Club Play chart, with "Someone Like You" cracking the top 40 of the same chart, but many people remember Get Ready for its two tracks with guest vocalists: "Turn My Way," with Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, and "Rock the Shack," with Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream.

One exception is awesome opener "Dreams Never End". I'm being entirely serious when I say that "Ceremony", "Temptation" and "Everything's Gone Green" are three of the best songs ever witten and they shone a light in the darkness of those early New Order years.

The band’s debut album Movement recorded between 24th April to the 4th May 1981 at Strawberry in Stockport and featuring all new material, produced by Martin Hannett was released in 11th November 1981 on Factory Records.

‘Music Complete’ is New Order’s ninth LP (tenth if you count 2013’s mini album ‘Lost Sirens’) and possibly their most eclectic collection of songs yet. Whichever way you count it, it’s New Order’s return to recording after an absence of more than a decade.

‘Music Complete’ finds the group revitalised, refreshed and razor sharp, looking to their past while forging forward. Where the group has previously pushed toward synthesisers or guitars, here the two are in balance.

Art direction by long term collaborator Peter Saville.

"Age Of Consent" with its propulsive Hook bassline and V.U. slashing Bernard outro (which would become a trademark) and the beautiful "Your Silent Face" were still included on the band's final tour.

The Extras CD contains previously unreleased writing sessions from New Order’s Manchester rehearsal rooms and the 1982 John Peel Session for the BBC. Other key tracks on the album included "Ruined in a Day," "World," and "Spooky," each of which made it into the top 30 of at least one Billboard chart. Given that it was New Order's first album in four years at the time of its release, it's probably fair to call it a comeback, and a successful one at that.

It was more electronic than 1985's previous LP, Low Life and was actually quite a bit poppier too. Asi it turned out the song was written to be included in that summer's blockbuster teen, coming of age movie Pretty In Pink and as a result was an international hit .

Coming out in October of 1985 it featured a hugely reworked and quite possibly superior remix by engineer John Robie. Everything here is bigger, bolder and basically more dancefloor friendly, WITHOUT compromising the beautiful song as featured on the original.

This was massive in Manchester back in the day!

Apart from the bizarre but exciting opener, this was a seamless sequence of stunning songs which made their dark, dislocated early years but a distant memory. Something was lost in that journey though, and it was no surprise that this was New Order's last record for Factory Records.

Supremely melodic and with a brilliant synth refrain , this 12inch extended verion took the one off the LP and squared it! Coming in at nearly 9 minutes long this is one of New Order's greatest ever songs, and as with nearly all their remixes, this 12 inch extended verion is the  absolute one that you need!

Additionally, the New Yorker describes the band’s music as “Magnificent and clever” while Stereogum proclaims “In recent history, no group has featured so much formidable established talent, collaborating on a regular basis.”

Of the album, lead-singer and main songwriter AC Newman comments, “This is a celebration record. After periods of difficulty, I am at a place where nothing in my life is dragging me down and the music reflects that. I’m grateful.”

Produced by band-members John Collin (bass) with Newman, the 12-track album was recorded primarily at Little Blue in Woodstock, NY and at JC/DC Studios in Vancouver B.C. with additional recording in Austin, Brooklyn and Vermont.

                                                                                                                                                The New Pornographers

                                                                                                                                                Challengers

"Challengers" continues The New Pornographer's signature multi-layered sound with greater epic sweep and wider sonic diversity. Less frenetically jaunty than its predecessors but still encapsulating pure summer joy, this album will impress the existing fans and convert the uninitiated. Recorded for the first time largely outside bassist John Collins' Vancouver JC/DC Studio, "Challengers" is their most organic-sounding record, reflecting a conscious decision to use less 'beepy synth' and almost entirely 'real' instruments (in addition to those listed above, they recruited an entire string section – who have played with Sufjan Stevens - plus harp, flute, and more).

                                                                                                                                                  The New Pornographers

                                                                                                                                                  Continue As A Guest

Over the past 20 years, The New Pornographers have proven themselves one of the most excellent bands in indie rock. The group’s ninth album and first for Merge establishes them alongside modern luminaries like Yo La Tengo and Superchunk when it comes to their ability to evolve while still retaining what made them so special in the first place. A dazzling and intriguing collection of songs, Continue as a Guest finds bandleader A.C. Newman and his compatriots Neko Case, Kathryn Calder, John Collins, Todd Fancey, and Joe Seiders exploring fresh territory and shattering the barriers of their collective comfort zone.

Newman began work on Continue as a Guest after the band had finished touring behind 2019’s In the Morse Code of Brake Lights. Themes of isolation and collapse bleed into this album, as Newman tackles the ambivalence of day-to-day life during the COVID-19 pandemic. But Newman says that Continue as a Guest’s title track also addresses the concerns that come with being in a band for so long. “The idea of continuing as a guest felt apropos to the times,” he explains. “Feeling out of place in culture, in society, being in a band that has been around for so long—not feeling like a part of any zeitgeist, but happy to be separate and living your simple life, your long fade-out. Living in a secluded place in an isolated time, it felt like a positive form of
acceptance: find your own little nowhere, find some space to fall apart, continue as a guest.”

Newman discovered new vocal approaches within his own talent. There are new and rich tones to Newman’s voice throughout Continue as a Guest, from his dusky lower register over “Angelcover” to his slippery slide over the glimmering synths of “Firework in the Falling Snow,” to bold tones he embraces on the soaring “Bottle Episodes.” Another sonic change comes courtesy of saxophonist Zach Djanikian, whose tenor and bass luxuriate all over Continue as a Guest’s alluring chassis, especially on the menacing build of “Pontius Pilate’s Home Movies.”

Along with Newman’s usual collaborators, several songwriters contribute. The bursting opener and first single “Really Really Light” is a co-write with Dan Bejar (Destroyer, the New Pornographers). Then there’s “Firework in the Falling Snow,” a collaboration with Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz and Sad13. “I was feeling like I wanted some help, so I sent it to Sadie and she sent me back this complete song that had these great lyrics,” Newman says. “She included the line ‘A firework in the falling snow,’ and I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s great.’ Sometimes you need that one thing to center the song, and even though I only used a few lines of hers in the end, I couldn’t have finished it without her.”

Even as Newman embraces a collaborative spirit more than ever, Continue as a Guest is a testament to his ability to discover new artistic sides of himself. “I started out as a songwriter more than as a singer, but at some point, you have to sing your own songs,” he says with a chuckle. “For a long time, I felt like the idea of changing a song because I couldn’t hit a note wasn’t okay—I could just get someone else to sing it. But I’m learning now that my songs can actually be a lot more malleable than I thought.” And it’s in that spirit that Continue as a Guest sounds like a thrilling path forward for The New Pornographers, with songs that generate a contagious feeling of excitement for the future as well.

As for the music: no sophomore slumping to be found here. Back then we wrote, “With impossibly huge hooks and an innate understanding of every pop trick in the book, this follow-up to 2000’s breakthrough Mass Romantic is the most exciting pop record we’ve heard in a long while.” For once, tastemakers of the day shared our enthusiasm. “The New Pornographers mix the pop purism of the Beach Boys, the power charge of Cheap Trick and the gentle psychedelia of Syd Barrett,” wrote the New York Times, who labeled Electric Version “Some of the best pop of the year.”

Newman notes that, "At the beginning of this record, there was some thinking that we wanted it to be like a Krautrock Fifth Dimension. Of course, our mutated idea of what Krautrock is probably doesn’t sound like Krautrock at all. But we were thinking: Let’s try and rock in a different way.”

Their eponymous debut was a musical counterpart to Grateful Dead releases like "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty" with its mix of country and psychedelic sounds. "Powerglide" had a stronger band feel again mixing country-rock and folky psychedelic licks to maximum effect.

A common complaint of 21st century music is that, with the ability to create & communicate at its most accessible point in history, there is very little being said. In light of the myriad holes humans keep digging & falling into, music is in real danger of becoming pure advertising for the mundane & narcissistic. NEW WARfrom Melbourne, Australia are a tonic then, possibly an antidote, or perhaps something larger.

NEW WAR were sown several years ago with the dissolution of Seattle-based Kill Rock Stars act, Shoplifting. Singer Chris Pugmire & bassist Melissa Lock hibernated for a couple of years, then quietly re-emerged in Melbourne. Lock then reconnected with Steve Masterson, drummer for the infamous Bird Blobs(which she briefly played in) and mutual friend Jesse Shepherd, the Gainsbourgian keyboardist forSir.

The brief was simple and half-spoken: no repeating the past, no guitar, plenty of space for Shepherd's noir-drenched keyboard work & Pugmire's barbed, feverish lyrics, with primacy given to the Lock/Masterson rhythm section.

The band rehearsed patiently for over a year, letting songs appear and take their course, careful to not force anything. When the time seemed right NEW WAR emerged quietly; playing often as part of Melbourne's rich underground with fellow free-thinkers such as Lost Animal, Fabulous Diamonds, My Disco & Beaches. Word spread; they carved out a reputation as one of Australia's best, most intense live bands & were picked for several choice supports including Wire, The Gossip,Laughing Clowns, Jandek,Michael Rother's Neu!/Harmonia show Wild Flag, Deerhoof, EMA & Electrelane.

The band headed into Birdland Studios with producer Lindsay Gravina (Rowland S Howard), keen to capture the alchemy of their live show. The basic tracks were all recorded live to analog tape; with limited vocal, keyboard & percussion overdubs added later. The sessions were focused & brisk, with recording, mixing & mastering completed in 10 days.

                                                                                                                                                            New Young Pony Club

Featuring a typically post-punk inspired backing (choppy guitars, jerky dancefloor rhythms etc) and another strong vocal performance from singer Tahita Bulmer, the song has a real B52s feel to it (albeit at a much slower tempo). On this CD single there are also exclusive reworks by MSTRKRFT and Whomadewho, both rather tasty.

The track is a sparsely minimal punk funk jerkout that sounds like a distaff version excursion on disco-era Rolling Stones fronted by the Slits' Ari Up and produced by David Byrne and Brian Eno. This CD single also includes and extended version plus video, AND remixes by Herve and Metal On Metal, both more for peak-time club play.

Forget everything you thought you knew about New Young Pony Club because on their second album it's all changed. If 2007's critically acclaimed, Mercury Music Prize nominated "Fantastic Playroom" was the culmination of the hybrid disco sound they pioneered, "The Optimist" heralds the beginning of a brave new future for the band. Self-produced and more importantly self-funded and self-released, "The Optimist" is the sound of a band taking full control of their present and future, circumnavigating their own way. With no four to the floor, no cowbell (!) and no monotone sexy talk, the creative freedom enjoyed by the band has opened up a new 'indie' side, as shown by the psychedelic dub balladry of "Stone" and the atmospheric, cracked beauty of "Architect Of Love", and the singles "Lost A Girl", "Chaos" and soon-to-be-huge "We Want To". It's an assured, deliciously adventurous next step for New Young Pony Club, open your ears and have a listen.

This is a totally enjoyable set of songs from an artist who has grown in maturity over her seven albums to date.
