Originally named The Take 5, Timebox originated from Southport, Lancashire. The quintets inclusion of organ and vibraphone hints at their Soul and Jazz leanings, as does their choice of repertoire. Prior to signing to Deram they recorded an excellent version of Dizzy Gillespie's Soul Source for the Piccadilly label. Their faithful cover of The Four Seasons Begginí gave Timebox a very brief taste of UK chart success when it peaked at No. 38 in August 1968 but it remains a firm favourite in Soul clubs. Timebox Soul credentials are evident from their choice of follow-up, an infectious cover of Bunny Sigler's 1966 single Girl Donít Make Me Wait, originally released on the Parkway label but not issued in the UK until 1976. It was penned by Leon Huff, who along with his song writing partner Kenny Gamble, was responsible for creating the Philly Soul sound in the 1970s.

      Max Richter

      Voices 2

Building on the musical material of the first record, VOICES 2 extends the musical language into a purely instrumental and abstract direction. Where the first part of the project is very focused on the text of The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights, the 2nd part opens up a musical space to let these words and ideas sink in.

        STAFF COMMENTS

says: Richter is never one to stay on the same theme for too long. He's worked on soundtracks and solo albums, but his 'Voices' project from last year was an interesting and important new direction. The second instalment of the same sees the spoken word swapped out in order to focus on the gorgeous musical phrasing and leaning more into his neo-classical roots. I've never been anything but imporessed with any of Richter's work, and this is no exception. Lovely stuff.

THIS IS A RECORD STORE DAY 2020 RELEASE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY AS PART OF THE OCTOBER 24TH DROP DAY AT 6PM.

Lockdown by LYR, featuring Florence Pugh and Pete Wareham of Melt Yourself Down. The song is set to a poem by poet laureate Simon Armitage, written in response to the coronavirus restrictions. ‘Lockdown’ moves from the outbreak of bubonic plague in Eyam, Derbyshire in the 17th century – when a bale of cloth sent from London inadvertently brought fleas carrying the plague – to the poem Meghadūta by the Sanskrit poet Kālidāsa, which follows the legend in which an exile sends words of reassurance to his wife in the Himalayas via a passing cloud.

              Max Richter

              Voices

Over a decade after its inception, ground-breaking composer Max Richter announces the release of VOICES – a major new recording project inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In a time of dramatic global change, VOICES offers a musical message of hope. Max Richter invited people around the world to be part of the piece, crowd-sourcing readings of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be interwoven into the work, which features an ‘upside-down’ orchestra. He received hundreds of submissions in over 70 languages. These readings form the aural landscape that the music flows through: they are the VOICES of the title.

Max Richter explains, “I like the idea of a piece of music as a place to think, and it is clear we all have some thinking to do at the moment. We live in a hugely challenging time and, looking around at the world we have made, it’s easy to feel hopeless or angry. But, just as the problems we face are of our own making, so their solutions are within our reach, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is something that offers us a way forward. Although it isn’t a perfect document, the declaration does represent an inspiring vision for the possibility of better and kinder world.”

                STAFF COMMENTS

says: A new Max Richter! There are few things that can quiet my cat but Richter is one of them, and now we have a brand new album from the master of modern classical. This time we get the addition of softly spoken voices, beautifully harmonising with the layers of brittle strings and piano we've come to expect.

                    MJ Cole

                    Madrugada

Madrugada is the Spanish word for those strange, seductive hours before sunrise. A familiar stretch of time for the seasoned raver – and for MJ Cole, an artist who’s spent much of his career exploring those magical moments. Yet despite so many nights in the clubs, some of his most powerful memories of the madrugada hours have nothing to do with dancefloor euphoria.

“I've experienced a lot of early mornings, but having been up from the night before,” he says, remembering one special morning on the Severn Bridge, driving home from a solo gig and watching the sun come up. “For me, the early morning is a significant period.” With MJ Cole presents Madrugada, he sets out to capture that special feeling with an album unlike anything he’s done before.

                        Elvis Costello And The Imposters

                        Look Now

Elvis Costello and The Imposters – Steve Nieve (keyboards), Davey Faragher (bass), Pete Thomas (drums) – have made a sensational new album that ranks alongside the best work this singularly great artist has ever produced.

Recorded in Hollywood, New York City and Vancouver, British Columbia, ‘Look Now’ is beautiful in its simplicity, reflective in its lyrical vision, surrounded by melodies and orchestrations that are nothing short of heavenly. It’s the first album Costello has made with The Imposters since the 2008 release of ‘Momofuku’ and his first new album since the acclaimed 2013 Roots collaboration, ‘Wise Up Ghost’.

Anyone anywhere in the world who has seen Elvis Costello and The Imposters live can testify to their unmitigated swagger. Costello’s suspicion that it was time to return to the studio was confirmed while on the ‘Imperial Bedroom & Other Chambers’ tour of the USA, last summer and he realized the power and sheer musicality of The Imposters had never really been fully captured on one record.

'Windy City’ is Alison Krauss’s first solo studio album since 1999. It is a beautifully created collection of classic songs, from the most awarded female in Grammy history, produced by Nashville veteran Buddy Cannon. ‘Windy City’ spans across different eras and genres with some familiar tracks – including “Gentle On My Mind,” a signature song of Glen Campbell’s, and “You Don’t Know Me” which was a hit for Eddy Arnold and Ray Charles. In 2000, Alison’s feature in the ‘O Brother Where Art Thou?’ soundtrack paved the way for contemporary popular folk music. In 2007, her multi-platinum album ‘Raising Sand’ with Robert Plant became a global smash, selling over 3 million albums.

Elvis Costello and The Roots have announced a collaborative album entitled Wise Up Ghost which is exclusively released.

The existence of the record was first revealed by ?uestlove as an aside during an interview with Billboard Magazine in January and a small number of test pressings were distributed as white labels on Record Store Day on the 20th of April. Most of the sessions took place in secret at Feliz Habitat Studios in the dead of night, while others were in plain sight at Costello’s Hookery Crookery Studios.

Elvis described the record as “the shortest distance between here and there” and containing “both rhythm and what is read”. Ahmir says, “It's a moody, brooding affair, cathartic rhythms and dissonant lullabies. I went stark and dark on the music, Elvis went HAM on some ole Ezra Pound shit.”

For Now I Am Winter is Ólafur Arnalds’ third full-length studio album. His earlier albums, soundtracks and EPs, have been released through the Berlin based cult label Erased Tapes.

Building and expanding on his previous more minimalist work, Arnalds’ new album is his first to involve a full orchestra (coarranged by Nico Muhly) and a vocalist (Agent Fresco lead singer Arnór Dan) on selected tracks, making it his most broadly appealing work to date.

With his previous recordings, extensive touring activities and prominent synch placements of his music he has managed to build up a dedicated fan base in Europe, North America and China.

Producer Rhett Davies gave them a punchier sound and the album was their biggest seller in America thus far. Now remastered with five extra tracks and new sleevenotes.
