    Love

    Forever Changes (50th Anniversary)

Love’s Forever Changes is the psychedelic folk-rock pioneers’ finest achievement. Mostly overlooked when it was released in 1967, today the album is considered an indispensable masterpiece. In 2008, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, and – in 2012 – the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry.

Love are celebrating the acclaimed album’s golden anniversary with an extensive 4CD/DVD/LP collection housed in a beautifully illustrated 12 x 12 hardbound book that features a newly written essay and track-by-track notes by music historian Ted Olsen.

Recorded during the Summer of Love in Hollywood, CA, Forever Changes is the group’s most fully realized studio effort, featuring Arthur Lee (vocals, guitar), Johnny Echols (lead guitar), Bryan MacLean (rhythm guitar, vocals), Ken Forssi (bass) and Michael Stuart (drums, percussion). The original album introduced classics like “Andmoreagain,” “Red Telephone,” “A House Is Not A Motel” and “Alone Again Or.”

The set features a few firsts for the album, including the CD-debut of a remastered version made by its original co-producer and engineer Bruce Botnick, as well as the first-ever release of the mono version on CD. Also included are alternate mixes of the album, as well as a selection of rare and unreleased singles and studio outtakes. Botnick’s stereo remaster of the original album makes its vinyl debut on the LP included with this set. It was cut from high resolution digital audio by celebrated audio engineer Bernie Grundman.

The DVD that accompanies the anniversary collection includes a 24/96 stereo mix of the album version of the original album remastered by Botnick. Also featured is “Your Mind And We Belong Together,” a rare promotional video directed by Elektra producer Mark Abramson that was originally released in 1968.

Forever Changes: 50th Anniversary Edition boasts more than a dozen rarities, including single versions of “Alone Again Or” and “A House Is Not A Motel” that are available now for the first time since 1967. Two other recordings on the set have never been released: the backing track for “Live And Let Live” and an outtake backing track for “Wonder People (I Do Wonder).”

Wilco continues to make excellent records and play shows that stir the soul, but the group invented the terrain it continues to explore more than 20 years ago with its first two albums – A.M. (1995) and Being There (1996). On December 1, Wilco will revisit those landmark albums with remastered versions of the originals expanded with rare and unreleased music that will be new to even the most dedicated fans.

A.M. Deluxe Edition includes the original album plus eight unreleased bonus tracks that feature an early version of “Outtasite (Outta Mind)” and “When You Find Trouble,” which is the last studio recording made by Uncle Tupelo.

After his former band Uncle Tupelo broke up, singer/songwriter Jeff Tweedy took the bulk of the band—most notably bassist John Stirratt and drummer Ken Coomer—and quickly recorded Wilco’s 1995 debut, A.M. The album includes several fan favorites like “Casino Queen” and the funny-sad ode to drunk driving and unrequited love, “Passenger Side.”

                Wilco

                Being There (Deluxe Boxset)

Wilco continues to make excellent records and play shows that stir the soul, but the group invented the terrain it continues to explore more than 20 years ago with its first two albums – A.M. (1995) and Being There (1996). On December 1, Wilco will revisit those landmark albums with remastered versions of the originals expanded with rare and unreleased music that will be new to even the most dedicated fans.

Being There (Deluxe Edition) builds on the original album with loads of never-before-heard songs, alternate takes and live performances and will be available as a five-CD collection. Wilco maintained the gravitas of roots music it established on A.M. creating the 21st century version of folk music it later perfected on records like Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and The Whole Love. Being There mixes happy-go-lucky rockers and ballads, with two signature songs from the Wilco canon – “Misunderstood” and “Sunken Treasure.”

This album includes 15 bonus tracks released for the first time, including alternate versions of tracks “I Got You” and “Say You Miss Me”, as well as Wilco’s 20-song performance at the Troubadour from November 12, 1996, combining songs from A.M. and a few Uncle Tupelo tracks. Also included are four songs the band played on radio station KCRW on November 13, 1996. As a touring band, many of these songs can be found on Wilco’s current set-list as notable fan favorites that have evolved over the years.

                  Ramones

Rocket To Russia (40th Anniversary Deluxe Box Set)

The Ramones released its second album of the calendar year (and third overall) on November 4, 1977, capping off one of the biggest years in the history of punk with Rocket To Russia. Among the band’s best-loved albums, it features classics like “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” and “Rockaway Beach” along with their signature covers of “Do You Wanna Dance?” and “Surfin’ Bird.” It’s also the last album ever recorded by all four founding members, as drummer Tommy Ramone left soon after to focus on writing and producing.

The album's 40-year anniversary will be celebrated with a 3CD/1LP boxed set in hardbound LP sized book.

The first disc of the Deluxe Edition features a remastered version of the original stereo mix for Rocket To Russia, plus the 2017 40th Anniversary Tracking Mix created by Stasium, which provides a back-to-basics version of the album, and a different track listing from the 1977 original. The 2017 40th Anniversary Tracking Mix is also featured on the LP that accompanies the Deluxe Edition.

Two dozen rare and unreleased recordings are found on the second disc, including rough mixes from sessions at Mediasound and The Power Station. There’s also an early version of “Needles And Pins” with Tommy on drums, the B-side single mix of “Babysitter,” an alternate version of “It’s A Long Way Back To Germany” with Dee Dee on vocals, an original radio promo with Joey Ramone, and more.

A highlight of this Deluxe Edition is the complete unreleased concert included on the third disc. This never-before-heard multi-track recording of the band’s December 19, 1977 show at the Apollo Centre in Glasgow, Scotland captures the Ramones just a few days before the group recorded the classic live album It’s Alive, and mixed for this 40th Anniversary edition by Ed Stasium. In Glasgow, they played songs from all three studio albums including “Blitzkrieg Bop,” “Judy Is A Punk,” “Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment,” and “California Sun.”

                    The Doors

                    Strange Days (50th Anniversary Edition)

"Strange Days" (50th Anniversary Edition) was produced by the album’s original engineer Bruce Botnick. Accompanying the set are liner notes by music journalist David Fricke, as well as a selection of rare and previously unseen photographs.

Having a larger budget for Strange Days allowed the band to spend more time experimenting in the studio. They used an eight-track recorder for the first time, which resulted in some memorable overdubs like Krieger’s double-tracked guitar on “When The Music’s Over.” Surprisingly, the trippy keyboard sound heard on the album’s title track is actually one of the earliest appearances of a Moog synthesizer in a rock song.

Strange Days mixed new songs written on the road with some written before the band’s 1967 debut. In fact, the band performed “Strange Days” during its 1966 residency at the London Fog in L.A., while “My Eyes Have Seen You” dates back to 1965. Another early track is “Moonlight Drive,” which was one of the very first songs that the band practiced together, and where the band heard Krieger’s haunting bottleneck guitar playing for the first time. It’s also the song Morrison sang to Manzarek at Venice Beach in 1965 when the two former UCLA film students reconnected and decided to start the Doors.

                      The Doors

The Doors - 180 Gram Stereo Version

Originally released in January 1967, and one of the most impressive debuts in rock history.

"A tremendous debut album, and indeed one of the best first-time outings in rock history, introducing the band's fusion of rock, blues, classical, jazz, and poetry with a knockout punch. The lean, spidery guitar and organ riffs interweave with a hypnotic menace, providing a seductive backdrop for Jim Morrison's captivating vocals and probing prose. "Light My Fire" was the cut that topped the charts and established the group as stars, but most of the rest of the album is just as impressive, including some of their best songs: the propulsive "Break on Through" (their first single), the beguiling mystery of "The Crystal Ship," the mysterious "End of the Night," "Take It as It Comes" (one of several tunes besides "Light My Fire" that also had hit potential), and the stomping rock of "Soul Kitchen" and "Twentieth Century Fox." The 11-minute Oedipal drama "The End" was the group at its most daring and, some would contend, overambitious. It was nonetheless a haunting cap to an album whose nonstop melodicism and dynamic tension would never be equaled by the group again, let alone bettered." - AllMusic.

                        Faces

                        Ooh La La

The Faces' 1973 valedictory effort was initially received in critical communities as something of a disappointment – a kind of hangover record following the vaulting heights of Long Player and A Nod Is As Good As A Wink … To A Blind Horse. Over the course of time, it has become the band's defining work. Blues-inspired workouts like "Cindy Incidentally" and "Glad And Sorry" demonstrate that the Faces have lost nothing off their considerable fastball, while the caution to the wind fuck-around "Borstal Boys" almost dares punk rock to happen. Finally we have Lane's ruminative title track at the album's conclusion – a gorgeous and wry concession to youth as a kind of slow gathering death. "I wish I knew what I know now / When I was younger" may qualify as the greatest and most knowing final salvo line ever authored by a truly legendary band.

                          Jane's Addiction

                          Nothing's Shocking

From their earliest club gigs, Jane's Addiction was the talk of the L.A. music scene, and a band clearly destined for greatness. Signed to Warner Bros. Records, the group delivered on the advance buzz with its 1988 studio debut NOTHING'S SHOCKING – heavy metal, progressive and alternative rock combine powerfully on songs like “Summertime Rolls,” “Pigs In Zen,” “Mountain Song” and “Jane Says.” It's a strange mix that might have sunk if played by lesser performers but soars in the hands of guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery, drummer Stephen Perkins and banshee-voiced frontman Perry Farrell. Today is the singer's birthday, and we can't think of a better way to celebrate than with the platinum-certified classic NOTHING'S SHOCKING.

                            The Replacements

For Sale: Live At Maxwell’s 1986

In February 1986, The Replacements performed a classic live show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ. Until now, that pristine recording of the legendary performance has only been available in low-quality bootleg form. Even so, Pitchfork has called the show “a fiery, focused set that would make a true believer out of any skeptic.” On 6th October, For Sale: Live At Maxwell’S 1986 will finally make its commercial debut as a double-LP. This marks the first live album by the band to see an official release on this format.

The show at Maxwell’s would prove to be one of the last great performances by the four original members of the Replacements, a much beloved line-up including Bob Stinson on guitar, before his departure from the band in 1986. The songs they played spanned the band’s entire history while giving prominence to new material from Tim, including “Bastards Of Young,” “Left Of The Dial” and “Kiss Me On The Bus.” Mixed in were favorites like “I Will Dare” from Let It Be (1984) and “Color Me Impressed” from Hootenanny (1983).

The original 24-track master tapes of the show sat in the Warner Music vaults until being given a proper mix in 2007, but it would still be another decade before the concert would get its official release. Mehr writes in the album’s liner notes: “Now, a decade later, and more than 30 years after the original concert, Replacements For Sale finally offers high-fidelity proof of the peculiar alchemy and unadulterated majesty of one of rock and roll’s greatest bands.”

                                The Doors

                                The Singles

The Doors’ 50th anniversary celebration continues this summer with a new Singles collections that spotlight every single and B-side the band released in the U.S., all gathered together for the first time.

THE SINGLES shows the creative chemistry shared by drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and vocalist Jim Morrison; four brilliant artists who made The Doors one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands.

The collection includes the single versions from all six of the landmark studio albums the quartet released between 1967 and 1971, including classics like “People Are Strange,” “Love Her Madly” and “Riders On The Storm.” Also included on the CD versions are four mono radio versions of some of the band’s biggest hits, such as “Hello, I Love You” and “Touch Me,” which have never been made available anywhere after being sent to radio around their original release. The B-sides – many of which are making their CD debut – add another dimension to the band’s legacy with such stellar tracks as “Who Scared You,” which appeared in March 1969 as the flipside to “Wishful Sinful,” and a cover of Willie Dixon’s “(You Need Meat) Don’t Go No Further,” which was paired with the 1971 smash “Love Her Madly.”

THE SINGLES also features several songs released after Morrison’s passing in 1971. Among those recordings are tracks the surviving trio recorded together (“Tightrope Ride” and “The Mosquito”), as well as live selections from posthumous releases (“Roadhouse Blues” and “Gloria.”)

The Blu-ray disc that accompanies the expanded version of THE SINGLES features a high-resolution Quadraphonic mix of The Best Of The Doors. This 11-song compilation, available on Blu-ray for the first time, was remixed specifically for Quad in 1973 and offers a unique sonic experience on songs like “Soul Kitchen,” “Moonlight Drive” and “Love Me Two Times.”

The set includes four 180-gram vinyl records, two 12” vinyl singles and a card slipcase. The first single is a re-recorded version of “Temple of Love” from 1992 that features Israeli vocalist Ofra Haza, and remains the Sisters’ biggest international hit, peaking at #3 on the UK charts. The second is “Under The Gun,” their final release, from 1993, which includes an updated version of “Alice”.

This double compilation retraces The Sisters Of Mercy’s formative years and their rise to cult acclaim. It includes three songs from 1980: “The Damage Done”, “Watch”, and “Home Of The Hit-Men”. Also included in this set is the band’s 1982 follow-up single: “Body Electric” and “Adrenochrome.” It also features a cover of the Stooges’ “1969” and more.

The first LP’s flipside collects music that originally appeared on The Sisters Of Mercy’s second EP, The Reptile House (1983). Among tracks are “Kiss The Carpet”, “Burn”, and the haunting “Lights”. Later that year the band released the single “Temple of Love” backed with “Heartland” and a cover the Rolling Stones’ “Gimme Shelter”, all of which are included here.

This collection’s title comes from a lyric in the Leonard Cohen song “Teachers,” a track the Sisters cover frequently in concert.

Transparent Days: West Coast Nuggets - Coloured Vinyl Edition

The crucible of the 1960’s rock revolution lay squarely on the Pacific rim of the Americas. From Vancouver and the Pacific Northwest down through the San Francisco Bay area and the massive suburban sprawl of California’s southland, literally thousands of life-changing discs spewed forth from the smallest garage to the most state-of-the-art studio facility. It was truly rock music’s renaissance period, and the recorded evidence still has the capacity to thrill and enthral. This carefully curated selection of curios from the Warner Brothers family of catalogues is a celebration of the arcane and the acknowledged, the unheard and the unsurpassed, all with a direct tie to the West Coast.

Buckley's second album, and a quantum leap on from his first. Recorded in 1967 when the world was still feeling the recent after-effects of "Sgt. Peppers", this album's scope was immense, and a few tracks were even co-written by poet Larry Beckett. Cited by many as Tim Buckley's best album, this was certainly the pinnacle of Tim's more traditional folk side.

50TH Anniversary Mono Edition of Love’s Debut Album.

After gigging around the Los Angeles scene for three years, Arthur Lee was ready for something different. Inspired by seeing The Byrds live, he decided to merge their folk-rock sound with the driving r&b he had been playing to create a new group, dubbed Love. Recruiting guitarists Johnny Echols and ex-Byrds roadie Bryan Maclean, bassist Ken Forssi and drummer Alban “Snoopy” Pfisterer, Love began recording their eponymous debut LP in January 1966.

Their first single, Bacharach/David composition “My Little Red Book,” spotlights an insistent, menacing riff that sounds nothing like what their contemporaries were committing to vinyl. Other cuts highlight the writing talents of Lee and the band members, notably on Lee’s anti-drug essay “Signed, D.C.” and Maclean’s “Softly to Me.” Also included is their version of the rock standard “Hey Joe,” rivaling The Leaves’ hit version for power and sporting some lyric alterations. The group, which lived communally at the time in a house formerly owned by Boris Karloff (they are pictured in the house’s garden on the LP cover), quickly coalesced into one of the West Coast’s most influential and exciting groups; here is where it all began.

Andy says: Like a more edgy Byrds mixing folk jangle with garage grit, Love brought the genius Arthur Lee into our hearts and minds, never to be the same again!! This is where the story began.

What we said way back in 2004: 'The debut album from James Murphy and his DFA buddies finally arrives and it's well worth any hype that's surrounded it. Along with Tim Goldsworthy, Nancy Whang, Phillip Mossman, Patrick Mahoney and Tyler Pope, Murphy has created a brilliant LP that not only rides the top of the zeitgeist wave of current post-punk / punk-funk revivalism, but goes way beyond there too, taking in loose electro-acoustic disco-not-disco, anthemic electroclash, fierce guitar-driven hardcore and intimate melancholy. Not to be missed!'

Originally only available as a download, James Murphy's 45 minute-long work-out track was commissioned by Nike. Actually the '45 minute-long track' is a red herring, as "45:33" is six different tracks mixed together to create a perfect backdrop for running. So, you get two minutes of warm up music, which sounds like some late 60s electronic synth experiment. This then segues into the simple hand clap and piano opening to track two, which builds into a great disco song, complete with soulful vocals. Next up there's an instrumental of LCD's "Someone Great", which works its way into a fantastic piece of cosmic-edged disco-house featuring twisted treated spoken vocals (by Murphy I'm presuming) that almost drop into "Losing My Edge" territory. Track five opens with a horn blast before launching into an energetic post-punk tribal disco-not-disco killer - it's like some lost Pigbag track remixed by Arthur Russell! Lastly, it's warm down time, set to some gently cascading synths and ambient atmospherics. Now, as I get out of breath running for the bus (time; 45 seconds), I can't say whether this would work for jogging to, but as a mix CD, or as individual tracks it's fantastic.

Hailed by Vanity Fair as “the best soundtrack of all time,” Time Magazine placed it as the 15th greatest album ever.

Patrick says: An OST as big, bold and brilliant as Prince's coiffure. There's not a bad track on here, but "Let's Go Crazy", "Darling Nikki", "When Doves Cry" and "Purple Rain" are as good as anything ever recorded.

When Doves Cry - 2017 Reissue

The last of this batch of "Purple Rain" single reissues treats us to Prince's all-conquering power pop smasher "When Doves Cry" backed with the equally essential non-album track "17 Days". I'm going to assume you're aware of the magnificent A-side (you do live on this planet after all...) and keep my gushing to a minimum, BUT, this is one of the finest pop songs ever written - synth funk to the power of rock riffage squared and he doesn't even bother with a bassline. Not only was "When Doves Cry" the best selling US single of 1984, it was also the first time since the Beatles that anyone had a number one movie, album and single all at the same time! If you don't know "17 Days", then allow me to make the introductions. "Snapping percussion, outrageous bass riff and killer hook, this is a Piccadilly customer...Piccadilly customer, this is the best Prince B-side!"

                                                      Let's Go Crazy - 2017 Reissue

Another "Purple Rain"-era (1984) 12" from Prince, this time the totally goofy "Let's Go Crazy" (I have visions of it being used in one of those 80s US teen movies where the film closes with everyone dancing wildly and very badly in the high school gym). It's the flipside you'll be after though, the sought-after "Erotic City", a 7.24 minute-long mid-tempo electronic disco gem that's big on the underground club scene.

                                                        Prince & The Revolution

                                                        Purple Rain - 2017 Reissue

Possibly the most powerful of all ballads, the title track to Prince's cinematic masterpiece "Purple Rain" is one of those lighters-aloft slo-mo 80s moments that could bring a tear to a glass eye while simultaneously raising hairs, prompting goosebumps and making you want to smooch the living daylights out of your other half - pure pop perfection. On the flip we get the instrumental version of "God" a divine guitar workout with more noodle than a Pasta Paul lunchbreak....

                                                          John Coltrane & Don Cherry

                                                          The Avant-Garde (Mono Edition)

Coltrane gets together with Ornette Coleman's band members for this 1960 session (recorded just after "Giant Steps") which features three Coleman compositions, Monk's "Bemsha Swing" and Don Cherry's "Cherryco". As the title suggests, this is a meeting of the minds between some of the greatest innovators of 60s jazz - ace record!

                                                            Ole Coltrane (Mono Edition)

This is the last of Coltrane's Atlantic label LPs, recorded in 1962 just two days after his debut for Impulse ("Africa / Brass"). This landmark LP features McCoy Tyner, Elvin Jones, Eric Dolphy, Freddie Hubbard, as well as bassists Art Davis and Reggie Workman. It includes the tracks "Ole" (an 18 minute epic), "Dahomey Dance" (clocking in at over ten minutes) and "Aisha". Once again John Coltrane proves his appreciable musical skills by ultimately advancing the entire Jazz-art-form with "Olé".
The title track is striking in resemblance to the Spanish influence heard on Miles Davis' "Sketches of Spain", although Olé takes this vibe a bit further; Coltrane's combo stretches out with inspired improvisations from Dolphy, Hubbard, Tyner, and of course Coltrane, respectively. The haunting beauty of "Aisha" stands as one of the finest collaborative efforts between Tyner - the song's author - and Coltrane.

                                                            Giant Steps (Mono Edition)

John Coltrane’s landmark Atlantic album in glorious mono.

Saying farewell to bebop, "Giant Steps" was Coltrane's second album to be recorded for the Atlantic label, and marked the first time that all of the pieces on a recording had been composed by him. The recording exemplifies Coltrane's melodic phrasing that came to be known as 'sheets of sound', and features the use of a new harmonic concept later to be known as 'Coltrane changes'. The set features early versionss of "Naima", "Cousin Mary", "Mr PC", "Spiral", and "Syeeda's Song Flute".

The sessions Coltrane recorded for Atlantic in late October 1960 were prolific to say the least, yielding "My Favourite Things", "Coltrane's Sound" and this, "Coltrane Plays The Blues". It includes "Blues To Elvin", "Blues To Bechet", "Blues To You", "Mr Day", "Mr Sims" and "Mr Knight". Beautiful music by one of the grooviest cats out there...

During the summer of 1982, Fleetwood Mac released ‘Mirage’ which topped the album chart and added to the band’s already impressive canon of hits with “Hold Me,” “Love In Store” and “Gypsy.” They followed this album up in 1987 and released the second-best selling record of their career with ‘Tango in the Night,’ an album that’s sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. It topped the album charts in the UK and scored major hits everywhere with “Big Love” and “Little Lies.”

Latest in the series of Fleetwood Mac remastered edition.

                                                              Angelo Badalamenti

Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me

'Through the darkness of future past
                                                              The magican longs to see
One chance out between two worlds:
                                                              Fire walk with me...'

Seeming to emanate directly from the dark heart of the Black Lodge, "Fire Walk With Me" is an altogether more brooding affair than the Twin Peaks series soundtrack. The surreal atmosphere and airbrushed shimmer remain, but the melancholic notes, minor key melodies and sustained bass tones are perfectly in keeping with the unending disquiet and foreboding which David Lynch achieved. Badalamenti won a grammy for the title track of this LP and it’s not hard to see why- it’s dangerous, and bursting with smokey jazz thanks to Jimmy Scott.

                                                              Angelo Badalamenti

                                                              Music From Twin Peaks

"Lucy, put Harry on the horn." And so began the most unique, iconic and absurd series in the history of television. For two glorious seasons we pressed our nose to the glass and watched the strange and beautiful goings on in Washington's weirdest logging town. We looked on in awe as Cooper drank coffee, ate cherry pie and savoured the woodland smells, got close to Audrey but kept a respactable distance. We rooted for Norma and Ed, Harry and Joan, Andy and Lucy, Margaret and her log, and laughed ourselves queasy at James and Donna's hilariously wet highschool romance. We tried to find Laura Palmer's killer, figure out the Red Room and the Black Lodge and work out exactly how Cooper got in touch with Diane. We failed, gave up and enjoyed the goings on anyway. And throughout it all, we were swept along on the thematic perfection of Angelo Badalamenti's sublime score. From the swelling bass and dreamy chords of the title music to the bittersweet beauty of "Laura's Theme", from Audrey's seductive jazz to the smokey sweetness of "Dance Of The Dream Man", the score never put a foot wrong. And now, for the first time in 25 years it's back on vinyl and CD, freshly remastered and properly pressed by Warners ahead of a brand new series! Aces!

It currently stands as the final studio album released by the quintet of Lindsey Buckingham, Mick Fleetwood, Christine McVie, John McVie and Stevie Nicks. The album sent four singles into the Billboard Top 20: “Little Lies” (#4), “Big Love” (#5), “Everywhere” (#14), and “Seven Wonders” (#19).

A proper bit of purple magic for any avid Prince collector here as Rhino serve up a replica reissue of the expanded maxi 12" of 1991 smash "Cream". Allegedly written as Prince stood in front of the mirror (I can assume naked and slick with sweat....sorry...I lost my train of thought), "Cream" is a delicious bit of slinking 80s pop complete with the requisite nods to jukebox rock (Robert Palmer etc), funk and soul. Killer synthplay, ice cool guitar riffs and steamy vocals combine perfectly to make for a masterful piece of chart subversion, served here with the full array of raps and remixes. Sweet!

                                                                                Prince

                                                                                If I Was Your Girlfriend

Taken from the purple one's magnum opus "Sign Of The Times", "If I Was Your Girlfriend" is a slow burner that could seduce the dead. Built around a repeated bass loop we find Prince wondering aloud if his girlfriend would treat him better if he were actually her girlfriend, rather than her lover. It’s typical Prince filth and I love it. Essential.

                                                                                Prince & The Revolution

                                                                                Kiss

What is there left to be said about what must be Prince’s most ubiquitous song? As a dj I learned the hard way that when people requested Prince they meant "Kiss", in the same way that when the same people asked for Stevie Wonder, what they actually meant was "Superstition". It’s no mean feat to write a song (or several of them in Prince’s case) that can define you as an artist, believe me I spent a lot of years in my youth trying. Sadly I failed where Prince succeeded and am left in awe of his precise funk guitar, sturdy rhythms and unstoppable sex appeal. Covered by everyone from Tom Jones to Age Of Chance, "Kiss" is as good a record as you’ll hear in 2017 and your mum will probably love it too.

                                                                                Prince

                                                                                U Got The Look

We all know that the best selling single from ‘Sign O The Times’ surely has to be the title track, right?
Wrong. That honour does, in fact, belong to ‘U Got The Look’ and, not only that pop pickers, it’s also the first song to feature Sheena Easton, how she got the job, I don’t know, maybe the purple one heard something in her cover of Dolly Parton’s ‘9 til 5’ that no one else did.
Anyway, I digress, ‘U Got The Look’ is the bomb, at this point in his career Prince could do no wrong, he was that incredibly rare combination of prolific and brilliant, comparable to the Stones between 1968-74.
Yes! THAT good, I’ll hear no argument.

                                                                                The Replacements

                                                                                Tim - Vinyl Edition

‘Tim’ is the fourth studio album by American alternative rock band The Replacements, released on Sire Records in 1985, their first major label release. The production, by Tommy Ramone, gives The Replacements a wide and spacious sound, more polished compared to the previous records but still not as glossy and tight as many American underground rock records of the mid-'80s.

Critically acclaimed and considered one of the best alternative rock records of all time, ‘Tim’ introduced fans to instant classics like “Kiss Me On The Bus” and the anthemic “Bastards Of Young.”

                                                                                  The Replacements

Pleased To Meet Me - Vinyl Edition

‘Pleased To Meet Me’ is the fifth studio album by the American rock band The Replacements, was released on Sire in 1987. Their typical hard rocking sound still forms the bulk of the album, but ‘Pleased To Meet Me’ presents a wider range of musical genres in comparison to its predecessors, going from punk rock to soul and cocktail jazz.

Jim Dickinson, Big Star’s ‘3rd’ producer, gives the album a colourful, muscular production, with cranking up guitars and even horns that was unheard of on a Replacements record, but still keeps their essence intact. Pleased To Meet Me was the band’s first album without founding guitarist Bob Stinson won raves for tracks like “Alex Chilton,” “Skyway” and “Can’t Hardly Wait.”

                                                                                    Grateful Dead

The Grateful Dead (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band’s debut album, the Grateful Dead are releasing a 2CD deluxe set and a limited edition vinyl picture disc, a first for the Grateful Dead. The band recorded and mixed “The Grateful Dead” in five days before releasing it in March 1967. It captures the group’s early sound with a mix of electrified jug band stomps (“Sitting On Top of the World”), Chicago blues (“Good Morning Little School Girl”), crazed modal improv (“Viola Lee Blues”), and Dylan-y put-downs (“Cream Puff War”).

The vinyl picture disc features the newly remastered audio from the original tapes by David Glasser.

The 2CD version features new remastered audio from the original tapes by David Glasser - along with a bonus disc that features unreleased concert recordings from July 29 and 30, 1966 at the P.N.E. Garden Auditorium in British Columbia, mastered by Jeffrey Norman. This bonus disc unearths unreleased recordings from the band’s performances at the Vancouver Trips Festival in 1966. Only a few recordings from the Dead’s first two years exist, but each one reveals corners of the band’s repertoire not captured anywhere else. That’s especially true here, with three songs making their last appearance on any surviving Dead recording: “Standing On The Corner,” “You Don’t Have To Ask Me,” and “Cardboard Cowboy.”

Legacy (The Very Best Of David Bowie)

A titan of popular music and pioneer of changing culture, it is not surprising that his death in January was met with such shock and sadness across the globe.

Throughout his life, David Bowie has amassed such an influential and varied musical back catalogue, that he leaves behind him a body of work that can be unrivalled – a true legacy.

In this must-have Bowie collection, you can experience Bowie’s genius from start to finish. With a more orchestrated and cleaner mix, this unreleased version was mixed by Ken Scott the original producer of the track.

This special vinyl edition of the album comes as a gatefold with 2 limited edition 12” art prints of the 2 images used on the sleeve.

Before The Doors took the music scene by storm in 1967, they were the house band at the London Fog, a Sunset Strip dive bar located just footsteps away from the world famous Whisky a Go Go, the future home of many of the band’s most legendary performances.

LONDON FOG 1966 is a brand new Collector’s Edition boxed set and virtual time capsule that features unearthed audio recorded at the club in May 1966. Previously unreleased and not even known to exist until recently, this marks the earliest recordings of the band and finds the quartet mixing blues covers with early versions of Doors originals.

Like many of the band’s early concerts, the show captured on this deluxe set reflects the group’s deep love for the blues with covers of standards like Muddy Waters’ “Rock Me” and “I’m Your Hoochie Coochie Man.” The set also includes raw performances of “Baby, Please Don’t Go” (Big Joe Williams), “Don’t Fight It” (Wilson Pickett), and “Lucille” (Little Richard).

Along with the unreleased music, the set is packed with memorabilia and historic liner notes to provide a true time capsule of that fabled night at the London Fog.

                                                                                        • Individually numbered limited edition of 18,000

                                                                                        Prince

                                                                                        Let’s Pretend We Are Married

Taken from ‘1999’, the album that launched Prince on his interstellar trajectory, this is a double a side on which he gets to sing about his favourite two topics, himself and sex.

Both are so funky that I was like John Belushi in ‘The Blues Brothers’ when they came on in the shop earlier, it’s pretty much impossible not to dance when you hear them and while I might not have been doing handstands past the funk section (I tried, health and safety issues, apparently) I was certainly giving my office chair a squeaky workout.

‘Let’s Pretend We’re Married’ throbs and pulses and would have First Avenue’s owner doing his infamous nod at the back, while ‘Irresistible Bitch’ is the funkiest mother***** that James Brown never wrote. Essential.

On Thanksgiving Day 1976, The Band took the stage for the very last time at the Winterland Theatre in San Francisco. The concert, aptly billed as The Last Waltz, has become one of the most revered performances of all time. For the show, Rick Danko, Levon Helm, Garth Hudson, Richard Manuel, and Robbie Robertson were joined by an all-star group of music pioneers, including Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, Ronnie Hawkins, Dr. John, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, and Neil Young, among others. The evening was captured on film by director Martin Scorsese. Released theatrically in April 1978 to critical acclaim, The Last Waltz is still considered by many to be the greatest concert film ever made.

Robertson will be busy during The Last Waltz 40th anniversary. On November 15, he will release Testimony (Crown Archetype), a new memoir in which he finally tells his own spellbinding story of the band that changed music history, his extraordinary personal journey, and his creative friendships with some of the greatest artists of the last half-century.

An absolute classic! The Stooges debut album sounded like nothing else when it was released in 1969. With a kind of Stones-ey swagger and a heavy dose of garage rock they also embraced the more experimental scene that was flourishing in NYC at the time, led by The Velvet Underground.
They had an energy and attitude that epitomised punk 7 years before punk was invented! Including "1969", "No Fun", "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and "Real Cool Time", it's an album that still sounds as exciting and dynamic today.

First Step - Orange Vinyl Edition

When Steve Marriott left The Small Faces, Ronnie Lane and Ian McLagan recruited Ron Wood and charismatic frontman Rod Stewart and changed their name to The Faces. First Step, which was released in 1970, was their first LP. Gone was the smart, tight Mod sound (and style) of their previous incarnation, and in came a looser, bluesy rock’n’roll. As its name implies, this is the sound of a band finding its feet, and although it’s slightly shambolic, it’s all the better for it.

                                                                                            Led Zeppelin

The Complete BBC Sessions - Deluxe Edition

BBC Sessions was originally released in 1997 and has been certified double platinum by the RIAA. The Complete BBC Sessions builds on that collection with a third disc that boasts eight unreleased performances, plus “White Summer,” a recording that first surfaced in 1990 on the Led Zeppelin Boxed Set. In addition, the set includes extensive session-by-session liner notes written by Dave Lewis. For the first time ever, it provides accurate details and notes about all of the band’s BBC sessions.

Musical highlights on this new collection include the debut of a long-lost radio session that has achieved near-mythic status among fans. Originally broadcast in April 1969, the session included three songs: “I Can’t Quit You Baby,” “You Shook Me,” and the only recorded performance of “Sunshine Woman.”

Also included are two unreleased versions of both “Communication Breakdown” and “What Is And What Should Never Be.” Separated by two years, the performances vividly demonstrate the young band’s rapid evolution over a short period of time.

As with the previous reissues the audio has been newly remastered under supervision from Jimmy Page.

The Ramones (Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee and Tommy) sounded like nothing else when their self-titled debut came roaring onto the scene in 1976. Even so, original drummer Tommy Ramone did do a pretty good job describing the band’s primal sound when he penned the quartet’s press bio that same year. “The Ramones all originate from Forest Hills and kids who grew up there either became musicians, degenerates or dentists. The Ramones are a little of each,” he observed. “Their sound is not unlike a fast drill on a rear molar.” This year marks the 40th anniversary of Ramones, recently named the “Greatest Punk Album Of All Time” by Rolling Stone, and certainly one of the most important and influential albums of all time. This 29-minute masterpiece helped launch the punk rock scenes in both America and Britain, and also went on to inspire countless other artists for generations to come. To celebrate the Ramones’ lasting impact, Rhino has created the ultimate tribute to the band’s landmark debut

Originally released in 1971, this classic Atlantic compilation collects together the finest soul stompers, blazing ballads and classic pop covers from Aretha's unstoppable late 60s period. One of the true titans of soul music, and American pop as a whole, Aretha stands supreme in her genre, and the stream of world conquering hits collected here helped her secure the moniker 'Lady Soul', a title she still holds uncontested to this day. Boasting signature songs “Respect”, “I Say A Little Prayer” and “Chain of Fools” alongside classic pop covers “Let It Be”, “Call Me” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, this compilation is a must have for any self respecting soul fan.

'Forever Changes' is Love's all-time classic album from the so called ‘Summer of Love’ of 1967. Neil Young was originally planned to produce the album but when he dropped out at the last minute it fell to Elektra in-house producer Bruce Botnik. Rumoured drug problems and band fall-outs created a tense atmosphere but one which resulted in an album of intricately arranged acoustic guitar, swelling strings and Spanish horns combined with morbid and foreboding lyrics which prophesized an end to the golden age.

'Forever Changes' is inarguably Love's masterpiece and an album of enduring beauty, but it's also one of the few major works of its era that saw the dark clouds looming on the cultural horizon, and the result was music that was as prescient as it was compelling – Mark Deming.

Legendary guitarist Ry Cooder has been performing for over 40 years as a solo artist, soundtrack composer and session musician. He has collaborated with some of the world’s elite including Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, Neil Young and The Rolling Stones, where he guested on their classic albums ‘Let It Bleed’ and ‘Sticky Fingers.’ Ry Cooder’s distinctive score to the 1984 Cannes Film Festival winner ‘Paris Texas’ is very suggestive of the film’s imagery and the desert itself. The title track is Ry Cooder’s most recognisable/popular song that sets the tone for a soundtrack filled with evocative and ringing acoustic guitar.

Boasting eight incredible studio albums and live shows that few can match in technical ability, this new compilation album will feature all the greatest hits of the past twenty years, as well as 14 rarities tracks.

Featuring hits such as ‘All I Need’, ‘Sexy Boy’ and ‘Kelly Watch The Stars’ this album is the perfect showcase to the incredible downtempo and psychedelic Zen that is Air, and with rare recordings that includes live sessions to truly encapsulate the prowess of their on stage presence.

Dexys need little introduction, under their previous guise as Dexys Midnight Runners with Kevin Rowland at the helm they sold millions of records and had 2 number ones in Geno and of course Come On Eileen. First forward 30 odd years and Dexys Midnight Runners are now Dexys and have been since their first new album in 27 years 2012’s One Day I’m Gonna Soar. Release to massive critical and public acclaim the album charted at number 13 and received a rapturous response both live and on record.

June 3rd sees the long awaited new album from Dexys, Let The Record Show: Dexys Do Irish And Country Soul, an album that Kevin Rowland has been wanting to do since 1985. Kevin says “It’s in the title-Dexys DO Irish and Country Soul, Dexys DO it, not BECOME it, we’re not trying to be Irish, we haven’t used too many Celtic instruments on there, It’s OUR sound.” Kevin has always followed his intuition, from the bold, poetic soul stylings of Searching For The Young Soul Rebels through the fervent folk of Too-Rye-Ay to the once misunderstood, now revered drama of Don’t Stand Me Down. Let The Record Show displays a mature confidence without sacrificing any of the charism that makes Dexys special.

The album is a collection of “re-interpretations“ of songs that Kevin holds dear for a number of reasons. Including covers of Bee Gees’ ‘To Love Somebody’, Rod Stewart’s ‘You Wear It well’ and Johnny Cash’s ‘40 Shades Of Green’. In addition to these there are the first two singles, ‘Both Sides Now’ written and performed by Joni Mitchell and also recorded by Judy Collins and the lesser known ‘Grazing In the Grass’ originally by The Friends Of Distinction.

In the same 'experimental' style of "Trout Mask Replica" but based around a more coherent 'song' structure. Essential obviously!!!!!

It offers a baker’s dozen of wonderful pop-folk songs with hard hitting messages throughout. The album was awarded four stars by both Rolling Stone and Q magazine and AllMusic declared that a ‘finer swan song has seldom been heard.’

Now Rhino release the highly anticipated companion, a four-LP collection that features all four of the studio albums the band recorded for Sire Records between 1985-90, including: Tim (1985), Pleased To Meet Me, (1987), Don’t Tell A Soul (1989) and All Shook Down (1990).

Without a doubt, the albums collected on THE SIRE YEARS helped secure The Replacements’ reputation as one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time. Tim (1985) introduced fans to instant classics like “Kiss Me On The Bus” and the anthemic “Bastards Of Young.” Pleased To Meet Me (1987) – the first without founding guitarist Bob Stinson – won raves for tracks like “Alex Chilton,” “Skyway” and “Can’t Hardly Wait.” Guitarist Slim Dunlap joined the band in the studio for the first time on Don’t Tell A Soul (1989), which includes “I’ll Be You,” the group’s highest-charting single. The band’s final album, All Shook Down (1990), stands as one of the most poetic and enduring epilogues in rock history, boasting such killer tracks as “Someone Take the Wheel” and “Sadly Beautiful,” and the Grammy® nominated “When It Began.” Production of the set will be limited to 8,700 individually numbered copies.

Featuring Hawkwind's classic line-up, which included vocalist/guitarist (and band constant) Dave Brock and bassist/occasional vocalist Lemmy (soon to depart and form Motorhead), 1973's "Space Ritual" is monolithic in stature and stands as the group's most impressive live (if not overall) recording. Although the ensemble often garnered comparisons to Pink Floyd, Hawkwind was far more aggressive than Waters, Gilmour, and company, charging through a potent, freeform set of cosmic freakouts (the trippy "Earth Calling") and rumbling metal ("Lord of Light" sounds like Black Sabbath in lunar orbit).

While the entire outing is stellar, the British space-rock group really hits a stride during the epic "Orgone Accumulator", which settles into a deep, acid groove. Although the spoken-word segments (most notably a recitation of sci-fi/fantasy author Michael Moorcock's "Black Corridor" by vocalist/poet Bob Calvert) might not suit everyone, "Space Ritual" endures as both a document of its era and one of Hawkwind's finest releases.

At the time of his tragic death at the age of 26, Redding was on the verge of breaking through to a wide pop audience (which he would indeed do with his posthumous number one single "[Sittin' On] The Dock of the Bay"). He was also tremendously respected by many white groups, particularly the Rolling Stones, who covered Redding's "Pain in My Heart." (via Allmusic.com)

Otis' voice is absolutely incredible, he's the best soul singer of all time in my opinion. 'I've been loving you too long' brings a tear to my eye every single time I hear it.

It is produced by long-time collaborator Ed Buller and whilst for the most part the sound is neat and considered the record also features a full string section which adds a tasteful grandiosity to  a record that feels like the endgame or at least answer to those early glammy dramas  which typified the band's explosion onto the UK music scene all those years ago. As such, it is a triumph.

The original record is that: raw and as it was played that night. This release of the seminal live album includes remastered audio, new sequencing and 5 extra tracks.

You don’t have to be complicated to shake up the status quo. We know that very well now, but it is thanks to them that we have that creative knowledge. As time goes, the influence of this band will only continue to unroll, and with this album we have the opportunity to peer into their lives and music as it was then.”

Although their chart success was virtually non-existent, their artistic impact was incalculable; making the world safe for white noise and dense sound serving as inspiration to many artists. They have released six studio albums over their career as well as a variety of B-sides and compilations.

The band released a compilation of singles, b-sides and rare tracks in 1988, with the title Barbed Wire Kisses. It contains a heavily thrashed-up cover of the Beach Boys “Surfin’ USA” as well as various alternate versions of album cuts including “Taste of Cindy” and “On The Wall”. The compilation was awarded four stars by Allmusic.

For many, the soft and crystal-clear voice of Joni Mitchell at the beginning of her career will remain indelible in their memory. The innovative style of her peaceful, folk guitar music caught the attention of David Crosby, member of the highly popular band Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and in 1968 he produced her very first album. Only three years later she became inspired by the cool flow of modern jazz and set off on new musical paths. "The Hissing Of Summer Lawns" represents a great leap away from the folk scene. Even the very first number, "In France They Kiss On Main Street", stands out thanks to its surprisingly unconventional melodic writing which is answered by powerful bass lines in a Jaco Pastorius-like style. Experiments with sound follow, such as the use of warrior drums of the Burundi and the growling sinus tones of the Moog synthesiser ("The Jungle Line") and then there is a whole line-up of minor-key songs behind whose jet-set foreground one finds a sophisticated jazz spirit. Even the final gospel-like singing ("Shadows And Light") contains little touches of the poignant melancholy which is found throughout the album. With her highly versatile, uniquely textured voice, which has often been compared favourably to that of Kate Bush, and her song texts whose lyrical depths are similar to Patti Smith's, Joni Mitchell has created a masterwork of the Seventies.

Although it was met with uncertainty by some fans upon its initial release, Sirens' Call received a four-star review from Rolling Stone straight out of the gate, and like pretty much every New Order album ever, it doesn't take long for it to grow on you.

The big single from the proceedings was "Crystal," which gave the group another #1 on the Hot Dance Music / Club Play chart, with "Someone Like You" cracking the top 40 of the same chart, but many people remember Get Ready for its two tracks with guest vocalists: "Turn My Way," with Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins, and "Rock the Shack," with Bobby Gillespie of Primal Scream.

Other key tracks on the album included "Ruined in a Day," "World," and "Spooky," each of which made it into the top 30 of at least one Billboard chart. Given that it was New Order's first album in four years at the time of its release, it's probably fair to call it a comeback, and a successful one at that.

They play a stripped-down mix of punk rock, funk and dub, with an emphasis on the social and political ills of society. They have released nine studio albums over their lengthy career as well as an array of compilations and live albums.

Solid Gold is the second album by Gang of Four, released in 1981. Described by AllMusic as a “politically charged, more Teutonic take on funk”, it was listed as one of Pitchfork Media’s best albums of the 1980s.

Chiming guitars and pretty melodies that hark back to a by gone Byrdsian era.
