Sign O' The Times - Super Deluxe Edition

Overflowing with musical ideas and topical lyrics that sound just as relevant today as they did when they were initially released, Prince’s iconic double album Sign O’ The Times captured the artist in a period of complete reinvention. The final 16-track album included just some of the countless songs Prince recorded in the prolific period of 1985-1987, which saw the dissolution of his band The Revolution, the construction of his innovative recording complex, Paisley Park, and the creation (and ultimate abandonment) of the albums Dream Factory, Camille, and Crystal Ball.

The Super Deluxe Edition will feature the classic album remastered for the very first time, 63 previously unreleased tracks, and a previously unreleased 2+ hour video concert performance from Prince’s legendary vault that illuminates his wide-ranging and prolific creativity in this era. Following the successful release of the 1999 Super Deluxe Edition in the fall of 2019, the Sign O’ The Times Super Deluxe Edition represents the deepest dive to date into Prince’s vault and includes a total of 92 audio tracks across thirteen LPs in the vinyl box set or 8 CD's in the CD box set.

                  David Bowie

Alabama Song - 40th Anniversary Picture Disc

Originally released in the UK on 15th February, 1980 ‘ALABAMA SONG’ was initially written as a poem by Bertolt Brecht in 1925 and was put to music by Kurt Weill for the 1927 play Little Mahogany. David Bowie was a longstanding Brecht fan and included the song in the setlist for his 1978 Isolar II tour.

The studio version of ‘ALABAMA SONG’ on the A-side of this release was recorded on July 2nd 1978, the day after the final show of the European leg of the tour, at Tony Visconti’s Good Earth Studios in Soho, London.

The AA-Side features two previously unreleased tracks; A rendition of “Heroes” track ‘JOE THE LION’ recorded at the soundcheck of the tour’s final Earls Court show on the 1st July 1978. The second track on the AA-side is a live version of ‘ALABAMA SONG’ also recorded July 1st 1978—a different performance than the one featured on the live album Welcome To The Blackout.

                      Factory Communications: 1978-92

Originally released as a limited edition four CD collection in 2009, Factory Communications: 1978-92 is a tribute to the label as well as a dedication to the founder, the late Tony Wilson.

Making its debut on vinyl, the project celebrates arguably the most important label in UK pop history, collating rare and obscure tracks from a diverse range of acts. It features 63 tracks including cuts from New Order, Joy Division, The Durutti Column, Happy Mondays, Electronic, A Certain Ratio, Section 25 and many others and includes sleeve notes written by Paul Morley.

Factory records was founded in 1978 when former Granada TV presenter Tony Wilson teamed up with Alan Erasmus, soon to be joined by maverick producer Martin Hannett. The Factory name was first used for a club featuring local bands including The Durutti Column, Cabaret Voltaire and Joy Division. The founding members of the label decided to release an EP of music by the acts who had performed there; “A Factory Sample” - and Factory Records was born.

Factory was however much more than just it’s headline acts. “Factory Communications: 1978-92” celebrates the label from the first release through an extremely diverse roster of acts from the cutting edge post punk of A Certain Ratio, Cabaret Voltaire, The Railway Children, OMD, James and Joy Division to obscurities such as Section 25, Biting Tongues, Crispy Ambulance, Miaow and Swamp Children via early dance culture - ESG and 52nd Street, to the full flowering of the ‘Madchester scene’, ending fittingly with the last Factory release, “Sunshine and Love” by Happy Mondays. Sleeve notes written by Paul Morley.

                            Tusk - Coloured Vinyl Edition

‘Tusk’ was originally released in October 1979 and quickly climbed to Number One on the UK album chart. The album spawned the huge hit singles ‘Tusk’ and ‘Sara’.

More than any other Fleetwood Mac album, 'Tusk' is born of a particular time and place - it could only have been created in the aftermath of 'Rumours', which shattered sales records, which in turn gave the group a blank check for its next album. But if they were falling apart during the making of 'Rumours', they were officially broken and shattered during the making of 'Tusk', and that disconnect between bandmembers resulted in a sprawling, incoherent, and utterly brilliant 20-track double album.

Unavailable on vinyl for many years, ‘Tusk’ is now released as a 140gm double vinyl LP.

The album is pressed on Crystal Clear vinyl so is not one to miss, both for Madonna fans and pop music genre fans alike.

Miles Davis shocked the music world in 1985 when he left Columbia Records after 30 years to join Warner Bros. Records. In October of that year, he began recording the album Rubberband in Los Angeles at Ameraycan Studios with producers Randy Hall and Zane Giles. The musical direction Davis was taking during the sessions marked a radical departure, with the inclusion of funk and soul grooves; with plans to feature guest vocalists Al Jarreau and Chaka Khan. Eventually, the album was shelved and Davis went on to record Tutu, leaving the Rubberband songs unheard and untouched for over 30 years.

Davis’ fans finally got a taste of the iconic trumpeter’s long-lost album last year with the release of a four-song Rubberband EP for Record Store Day. Now the entire 11-song Rubberband album makes its debut for all the heads. It was finished by the original producers Hall and Giles; with Davis’ nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr., who played drums on the original sessions for the album in 1985-86. The cover art for the album is a Davis original painting from the time.

“Uncle Miles would be proud. Randy, Zane and I, and everyone involved, put our heart and soul into ‘The Rubberband Of Life,’” says Wilburn, Jr.

In 2017 – 32 years after Davis started recording Rubberband– Hall, Giles, and – and Davis’ nephew, Wilburn, Jr., began work to finish the album. The final version includes several guest artists including singers Ledisi (a 12-time Grammy nominee) and Lalah Hathaway (daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway).

Davis – who plays both trumpet and keyboards on the album – was joined in the studio by keyboardists Adam Holzman, Neil Larsen and Wayne Linsey; percussionist Steve Reid; saxophonist Glen Burris; and Wilburn, Jr. on drums. The sessions were engineered by Grammy®-winner Reggie Dozier, whose brother Lamont Dozier was part of the legendary Motown song writing team Holland-Dozier-Holland.

                                    STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Miles' controversial and uber funky fusion LP "Rubberband" finally sees the light of day after 30-odd years, finished by original producers Randy Hall and Zane Giles as well as Davis' nephew Vince Wilburn Jr., who played drums on the original sessions. Davis' trumpet and wild keyboard are out of this world as per, but it's the Prince styled e-funk grooves which are gonna make you cut up the living room.

Prince will forever be remembered as a commanding live performer, chart-topping recording artist, and music business revolutionary. Yet for all the time he spent in the spotlight over his four-decade-long career, Prince also worked tirelessly behind the scenes to nurture talent and pen songs for the rising artists he respected.

Sourced directly from Prince’s vast archive of Vault recordings, "Originals" is a brand new 15-track album featuring 14 previously unreleased recordings that illuminates the vital, behind-the-scenes role Prince played in other artists’ careers. These are more than just demos, the production quality has been kept high and the recordings resemble a pristine quality similar to that of "Nothing Compares 2 U", which was released last year.

By the mid-1980s, Prince was dominating the charts even as a writer/producer with songs he’d composed and recorded for others. In addition to releasing nine of his most commercially successful full-length albums, he also wrote and recorded endless reels of material for proteges The Time, Vanity 6, Sheila E., Apollonia 6, Jill Jones, the Family, and Mazarati. Several of the iconic songs found on "Originals" were considerable hits for the artists who recorded them.

Having a larger budget for Strange Days allowed the band to spend more time experimenting in the studio. They used an eight-track recorder for the first time, which resulted in some memorable overdubs like Krieger’s double-tracked guitar on “When The Music’s Over.” Surprisingly, the trippy keyboard sound heard on the album’s title track is actually one of the earliest appearances of a Moog synthesizer in a rock song.

Strange Days mixed new songs written on the road with some written before the band’s 1967 debut. In fact, the band performed “Strange Days” during its 1966 residency at the London Fog in L.A., while “My Eyes Have Seen You” dates back to 1965. Another early track is “Moonlight Drive,” which was one of the very first songs that the band practiced together, and where the band heard Krieger’s haunting bottleneck guitar playing for the first time. It’s also the song Morrison sang to Manzarek at Venice Beach in 1965 when the two former UCLA film students reconnected and decided to start the Doors.

Widely considered to be both The Smiths’ finest work and one of the greatest albums ever made, ‘The Queen Is Dead’ has cast a significant influence over subsequent generations since it was first released in the summer of 1986.

This reissue represents the first time that The Smiths’ back catalogue has been revisited in such a way. The album features several of the band’s finest moments including the title track and ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’, as well as the iconic singles ‘The Boy With The Thorn In His Side’ and ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’.

‘The Queen Is Dead’ will be released on digital and streaming formats as well as the following physical formats – all of which feature the 2017 master of the original album:

For Sale: Live At Maxwell’s 1986

In February 1986, The Replacements performed a classic live show at Maxwell’s in Hoboken, NJ. Until now, that pristine recording of the legendary performance has only been available in low-quality bootleg form. Even so, Pitchfork has called the show “a fiery, focused set that would make a true believer out of any skeptic.” On 6th October, For Sale: Live At Maxwell’S 1986 will finally make its commercial debut as a double-LP. This marks the first live album by the band to see an official release on this format.

The show at Maxwell’s would prove to be one of the last great performances by the four original members of the Replacements, a much beloved line-up including Bob Stinson on guitar, before his departure from the band in 1986. The songs they played spanned the band’s entire history while giving prominence to new material from Tim, including “Bastards Of Young,” “Left Of The Dial” and “Kiss Me On The Bus.” Mixed in were favorites like “I Will Dare” from Let It Be (1984) and “Color Me Impressed” from Hootenanny (1983).

The original 24-track master tapes of the show sat in the Warner Music vaults until being given a proper mix in 2007, but it would still be another decade before the concert would get its official release. Mehr writes in the album’s liner notes: “Now, a decade later, and more than 30 years after the original concert, Replacements For Sale finally offers high-fidelity proof of the peculiar alchemy and unadulterated majesty of one of rock and roll’s greatest bands.”

                                                                                  The Singles

The Doors’ 50th anniversary celebration continues this summer with a new Singles collections that spotlight every single and B-side the band released in the U.S., all gathered together for the first time.

THE SINGLES shows the creative chemistry shared by drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and vocalist Jim Morrison; four brilliant artists who made The Doors one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands.

The collection includes the single versions from all six of the landmark studio albums the quartet released between 1967 and 1971, including classics like “People Are Strange,” “Love Her Madly” and “Riders On The Storm.” Also included on the CD versions are four mono radio versions of some of the band’s biggest hits, such as “Hello, I Love You” and “Touch Me,” which have never been made available anywhere after being sent to radio around their original release. The B-sides – many of which are making their CD debut – add another dimension to the band’s legacy with such stellar tracks as “Who Scared You,” which appeared in March 1969 as the flipside to “Wishful Sinful,” and a cover of Willie Dixon’s “(You Need Meat) Don’t Go No Further,” which was paired with the 1971 smash “Love Her Madly.”

THE SINGLES also features several songs released after Morrison’s passing in 1971. Among those recordings are tracks the surviving trio recorded together (“Tightrope Ride” and “The Mosquito”), as well as live selections from posthumous releases (“Roadhouse Blues” and “Gloria.”)

The Blu-ray disc that accompanies the expanded version of THE SINGLES features a high-resolution Quadraphonic mix of The Best Of The Doors. This 11-song compilation, available on Blu-ray for the first time, was remixed specifically for Quad in 1973 and offers a unique sonic experience on songs like “Soul Kitchen,” “Moonlight Drive” and “Love Me Two Times.”

The newly remastered original version will also be released as a single CD. When Doves Cry - 2017 Reissue

The last of this batch of "Purple Rain" single reissues treats us to Prince's all-conquering power pop smasher "When Doves Cry" backed with the equally essential non-album track "17 Days". I'm going to assume you're aware of the magnificent A-side (you do live on this planet after all...) and keep my gushing to a minimum, BUT, this is one of the finest pop songs ever written - synth funk to the power of rock riffage squared and he doesn't even bother with a bassline. Not only was "When Doves Cry" the best selling US single of 1984, it was also the first time since the Beatles that anyone had a number one movie, album and single all at the same time! If you don't know "17 Days", then allow me to make the introductions. "Snapping percussion, outrageous bass riff and killer hook, this is a Piccadilly customer...Piccadilly customer, this is the best Prince B-side!"

                                                                                      John Coltrane & Don Cherry

                                                                                      The Avant-Garde (Mono Edition)

Coltrane gets together with Ornette Coleman's band members for this 1960 session (recorded just after "Giant Steps") which features three Coleman compositions, Monk's "Bemsha Swing" and Don Cherry's "Cherryco". As the title suggests, this is a meeting of the minds between some of the greatest innovators of 60s jazz - ace record!

                                                                                        John Coltrane

                                                                                        Giant Steps (Mono Edition)

John Coltrane’s landmark Atlantic album in glorious mono.

Saying farewell to bebop, "Giant Steps" was Coltrane's second album to be recorded for the Atlantic label, and marked the first time that all of the pieces on a recording had been composed by him. The recording exemplifies Coltrane's melodic phrasing that came to be known as 'sheets of sound', and features the use of a new harmonic concept later to be known as 'Coltrane changes'. The set features early versionss of "Naima", "Cousin Mary", "Mr PC", "Spiral", and "Syeeda's Song Flute".

                                                                                        John Coltrane

                                                                                        Trane: The Atlantic Collection

To coincide with the release of the John Coltrane documentary Chasing Trane, this 1 LP & 1 CD compilation with unique artwork, remastered for the release, is designed as an introduction to John Coltrane’s revered Atlantic recordings. Trane: The Atlantic Collection includes the hit single ‘My Favorite Things,’ the iconic ‘Giant Steps, ‘Naima’ and more, from one of the legends of the jazz world. The album features a new liner notes essay by Ben Ratliff, former NY Times jazz critic, & author of the 2007 biography ‘Coltrane: The Story of a Sound.’

                                                                                        Fleetwood Mac

                                                                                        Tango In The Night

During the summer of 1982, Fleetwood Mac released ‘Mirage’ which topped the album chart and added to the band’s already impressive canon of hits with “Hold Me,” “Love In Store” and “Gypsy.” They followed this album up in 1987 and released the second-best selling record of their career with ‘Tango in the Night,’ an album that’s sold more than 15 million copies worldwide. It topped the album charts in the UK and scored major hits everywhere with “Big Love” and “Little Lies.”

Latest in the series of Fleetwood Mac remastered edition.

The Grateful Dead (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition)

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band’s debut album, the Grateful Dead are releasing a 2CD deluxe set and a limited edition vinyl picture disc, a first for the Grateful Dead. The band recorded and mixed “The Grateful Dead” in five days before releasing it in March 1967. It captures the group’s early sound with a mix of electrified jug band stomps (“Sitting On Top of the World”), Chicago blues (“Good Morning Little School Girl”), crazed modal improv (“Viola Lee Blues”), and Dylan-y put-downs (“Cream Puff War”).

The vinyl picture disc features the newly remastered audio from the original tapes by David Glasser.

The 2CD version features new remastered audio from the original tapes by David Glasser - along with a bonus disc that features unreleased concert recordings from July 29 and 30, 1966 at the P.N.E. Garden Auditorium in British Columbia, mastered by Jeffrey Norman. This bonus disc unearths unreleased recordings from the band’s performances at the Vancouver Trips Festival in 1966. Only a few recordings from the Dead’s first two years exist, but each one reveals corners of the band’s repertoire not captured anywhere else. That’s especially true here, with three songs making their last appearance on any surviving Dead recording: “Standing On The Corner,” “You Don’t Have To Ask Me,” and “Cardboard Cowboy.”

Music, art and fashion would not be in the place it is today without the seminal influence of David Bowie. A titan of popular music and pioneer of changing culture, it is not surprising that his death in January was met with such shock and sadness across the globe.

Throughout his life, David Bowie has amassed such an influential and varied musical back catalogue, that he leaves behind him a body of work that can be unrivalled – a true legacy.

In this must-have Bowie collection, you can experience Bowie’s genius from start to finish. From his early days as the iconic Ziggy Stardust, to the final days of Blackstar, ‘Legacy’ brings you the best material from Bowie’s star-studded career.

Not only is ‘Legacy’ the ultimate Bowie collection to own, but it also features a previously unreleased mix of his renowned song ‘Life On Mars ?’. With a more orchestrated and cleaner mix, this unreleased version was mixed by Ken Scott the original producer of the track.

This 2 disc deluxe version of the album features not only more hits but also fans favorites such as This Is Not America, Fashion and I Can’t Give Everything Away from the mighty Blackstar.

Packaging takes the form of a deluxe digipack with additional photos.

First Step - Orange Vinyl Edition

When Steve Marriott left The Small Faces, Ronnie Lane and Ian McLagan recruited Ron Wood and charismatic frontman Rod Stewart and changed their name to The Faces. First Step, which was released in 1970, was their first LP. Gone was the smart, tight Mod sound (and style) of their previous incarnation, and in came a looser, bluesy rock’n’roll. As its name implies, this is the sound of a band finding its feet, and although it’s slightly shambolic, it’s all the better for it.

                                                                                                Love

                                                                                                Forever Changes

'Forever Changes' is Love's all-time classic album from the so called ‘Summer of Love’ of 1967. Neil Young was originally planned to produce the album but when he dropped out at the last minute it fell to Elektra in-house producer Bruce Botnik. Rumoured drug problems and band fall-outs created a tense atmosphere but one which resulted in an album of intricately arranged acoustic guitar, swelling strings and Spanish horns combined with morbid and foreboding lyrics which prophesized an end to the golden age.

'Forever Changes' is inarguably Love's masterpiece and an album of enduring beauty, but it's also one of the few major works of its era that saw the dark clouds looming on the cultural horizon, and the result was music that was as prescient as it was compelling – Mark Deming.

Air have been one of the most iconic French acts of the last two decades, with worldwide hits that have shaped the forefront of modern electronica, calling on various styles and constantly crossing genre barriers, re-shaping the rules as they go. Boasting eight incredible studio albums and live shows that few can match in technical ability, this new compilation album will feature all the greatest hits of the past twenty years, as well as 14 rarities tracks.

Featuring hits such as ‘All I Need’, ‘Sexy Boy’ and ‘Kelly Watch The Stars’ this album is the perfect showcase to the incredible downtempo and psychedelic Zen that is Air, and with rare recordings that includes live sessions to truly encapsulate the prowess of their on stage presence.

It's like having a brand new Air album!

Let The Record Show: Dexys Do Irish And Country Soul

Dexys need little introduction, under their previous guise as Dexys Midnight Runners with Kevin Rowland at the helm they sold millions of records and had 2 number ones in Geno and of course Come On Eileen. First forward 30 odd years and Dexys Midnight Runners are now Dexys and have been since their first new album in 27 years 2012’s One Day I’m Gonna Soar. Release to massive critical and public acclaim the album charted at number 13 and received a rapturous response both live and on record.

June 3rd sees the long awaited new album from Dexys, Let The Record Show: Dexys Do Irish And Country Soul, an album that Kevin Rowland has been wanting to do since 1985. Kevin says “It’s in the title-Dexys DO Irish and Country Soul, Dexys DO it, not BECOME it, we’re not trying to be Irish, we haven’t used too many Celtic instruments on there, It’s OUR sound.” Kevin has always followed his intuition, from the bold, poetic soul stylings of Searching For The Young Soul Rebels through the fervent folk of Too-Rye-Ay to the once misunderstood, now revered drama of Don’t Stand Me Down. Let The Record Show displays a mature confidence without sacrificing any of the charism that makes Dexys special.

The album is a collection of “re-interpretations“ of songs that Kevin holds dear for a number of reasons. Including covers of Bee Gees’ ‘To Love Somebody’, Rod Stewart’s ‘You Wear It well’ and Johnny Cash’s ‘40 Shades Of Green’. In addition to these there are the first two singles, ‘Both Sides Now’ written and performed by Joni Mitchell and also recorded by Judy Collins and the lesser known ‘Grazing In the Grass’ originally by The Friends Of Distinction.

While Tweedy created the more pop-orientated Wilco, Farrar produced Son Volt’s ‘Trace’ a year later. The album was an alternative-country masterpiece and a roots-rock journey through America.

If you aren't familiar with this album's first single, then you must not have been listening to the radio in the summer of 1993, because "Regret" was virtually everywhere at the time, hitting #1 on Billboard's Modern Rock and Hot Dance Music / Club Play charts, #7 on the Top 40 Mainstream chart, and even provided the band with a top-30 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Other key tracks on the album included "Ruined in a Day," "World," and "Spooky," each of which made it into the top 30 of at least one Billboard chart. Given that it was New Order's first album in four years at the time of its release, it's probably fair to call it a comeback, and a successful one at that.

The album—which peaked at #1 in both the U.S. and UK and was certified triple platinum—crackles with energy on Zeppelin classics like “Nobody’s Fault But Mine” and “Achilles Last Stand” and delivers powerful jolts of the group at its visceral best.

This deluxe edition of Led Zeppelin’s Presence newly remastered by guitarist and producer Jimmy Page is accompanied by companion audio comprised of previously unreleased music related to the original release selected and compiled by Page. The companion audio disc that accompanies Presence has five unreleased reference mixes from the sessions, which reveal works in progress. Along with alternate incarnations of “For Your Life” “Achilles Last Stand” and “Royal Orleans,” there is also the previously unheard instrumental curiously titled “10 Ribs & All/Carrot Pod Pod (Pod).”

Joy Division's second album came out a year after their debut, and many consider it an even greater achievement. Whilst still messed-up, depressed and turbulent, there's a less violent and more resigned vibe here. A majestic gloom prevails and whilst the old side one would feature their trademark, twisted, scariness, a glacial, detached beauty sees the last four songs take Joy Division into the realm of the gods. These are brooding soundscapes with keyboards to the fore (the whole album has less guitars) and heartbreaking melodies. In this seamless run of four unbelievable tracks, the sorrow and emptiness is so real, so powerful, that nothing in popular music has since surpassed it. They were growing as writers and their sound had evolved. Two of the most stunning albums in the history of pop and only a year apart. A whole slew of imitators were waiting in the wings, and Joy Division were set to take on the world. We all know what happened next.

It's difficult to describe the jaw-dropping astonishment that came with the release of this, Joy Division's debut album, in 1979. That four Mancunian punks could create a work of such power, splendour and originality that would change pop music forever, well, a whole new genre had to be invented for them. This had the honesty and passion of punk, but this was arty, angular, literary and unique; this was definitely post-punk, but the massive impact of this record saw Joy Division quickly transcend any pigeon-holing. With singer Ian Curtis documenting fear and alienation, and the band conjuring powerful, brooding rock that featured bass as a lead instrument, dischordant guitar and churning drums and percussion, an emotive group was turned into one of the greatest of all time by Martin Hannett's beautiful production. This is bleak, heavy music, but it's also incredibly exhilarating. In Curtis's words and monotone vocals there's doom and drama, but you could never say this was an act; this is pure, naked emotion captured on tape. There's an intensity here that still shocks.

Air's Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel were a couple of cerebral keyboard geeks from Versailles, France, where they obviously don't get out of the studio much. Their space-pop debut, "Moon Safari", was a truly obsessive hommage to easy listening, a sublime Eurocheese omelet. They built their music out of classic 60s French schlock: bongos, castanets, vintage electric piano, dream-weaver synths and shag-carpet organ straight from the soundtracks of movies like Un Homme et Une Femme. The music is full of hidden jokes, as when "Remember" replicates the distorted drum intro from the Beach Boys hit "Do It Again"; Air's Brian Wilson allusion isn't some "Smile"-era obscurity - it's a beach-party blowout. Loads of American bands tried to emulate the fab tackiness of 1960s French pop. But Moon Safari proves that the French really do it better themselves.

To coincide with the deluxe reissue of “The Virgin Suicides”, Warner / Parlophone will also release remastered versions of Air’s five album discography on 180-gram vinyl with original artwork – their first EP 'Premiers Symptômes' (1997), 'Moon Safari' (1998), '10,000 Hz Legend' (2001), 'Talkie Walkie' (2004), and 'Pocket Symphony' (2007).

Each LP is pressed on 180 gram vinyl and replicates the original album packaging (which means that “Eagles” is reissued as the band originally intended. “Hotel California” includes a replica of the poster from the original issue with band photos by Norman Seeff in full colour.

On ‘Barrett’, Syd's second solo album, he was joined by Pink Floyd members Rick Wright and David Gilmour. Gilmour and Wright also acted as producers. Syd needed this help as things were getting a touch more fractured for him  and obviously you can hear this in the music.  It is still  a great  record though, from a trailblazing, unique talent.

Their dark, brooding sound has inspired more artists than could be listed and their continued adoration today is testament to the forward thinking yet inward projected music and lyricism of a young band on the brink of success yet unsure of how to deal with it. With the sad passing of Ian Curtis, from the ashes rose New Order; the same core band but with a new fresh approach to their chosen career path. Loud, colourful and full of life.

New Order bring to the table 'Blue Monday', 'Bizarre Love Triangle' and 'True Faith'. Also included is a brand new never released New Order track ‘Hellbent’.

                                                                                                                      This Is Happening

The drip-feed of LCD anticipation ("Bye Bye Bayou", "Pow Pow") is over and "This Is Happening" has finally arrived. A natural extension to previous long player “Sound Of Silver”, this new set contains everything we love about LCD (shouty indie-disco, killer pop hooks, James Murphy's witty musings, big fat electronic noises, proper sing-along anthems and hummable tunes), and is the perfect circle closer on the outfit's trilogy of albums. And if "This Is Happening" is "Sound Of Silver Part 2" (in the best possible way), it is also packed with influences and inspirations from the golden era of music - the late 70s and early 80s (well, that's my golden era anyway!). Murphy's subliminal magpie-like tendencies seep through as Berlin era Bowie and Iggy ("Drunk Girls" and "All I Want" bear more than a passing resemblance to "Boys Keep Swinging" and "Heroes", while "Somebody's Calling Me" hints at "Night Clubbing"), Eno circa "Here Come The Warm Jets", Kraftwerk and Yellow Magic Orchestra electronics (check that motorik chug on "I Can Change"), disco and classic US new wave radio bands (all skinny ties and drainpipe jeans) all get fed into the LCD song machine. But while other bands might turn out poor one-dimensional pastiches of the music they love, no matter who or what LCD Soundsystem reference, the resulting songs could be by no-one else but themselves. As everyone knows, all the best bands quit while they're still ahead, and as an album that calls time on the LCD Soundsystem idea, "This Is Happening" bows out on a high. As if it was going to do anything else?!

"Age Of Consent" with its propulsive Hook bassline and V.U. slashing Bernard outro (which would become a trademark) and the beautiful "Your Silent Face" were still included on the band's final tour.

The rocking songs were heavier and the electronic ones even more beautiful. They were mostly split into what used to be the old Side 1 and Side 2, with the career highlight "Bizarre Love Triangle" opening the latter. This, "All Day Long" and "Angel Dust" make a gorgeous run of sweeping electronic pop songs that pointed the way to the slick majesty of "Technique" which was to follow.

This, their debut, inevitably finds the band heavily in the shadow of Joy Division, with moody, broody pieces bigger on vibe than actual songcraft. One exception is awesome opener "Dreams Never End". I'm being entirely serious when I say that "Ceremony", "Temptation" and "Everything's Gone Green" are three of the best songs ever witten and they shone a light in the darkness of those early New Order years.

Great, tuneful songs (three of which are deliciously poppy) no filler, and a big, full sound that perfectly blended the electronic with the organic, made this their best album so far. There was only one non-album single this time, (the rather weak "Shellshock") and in-fact two songs were actually (the shock! the horror! Sell out! Sell out!) lifted from the album as singles. But fear not, the remixed, extended versions of "The Perfect Kiss" and "Subculture" are so unbelievably good that I think New Order were forgiven!

Apart from the bizarre but exciting opener, this was a seamless sequence of stunning songs which made their dark, dislocated early years but a distant memory. Something was lost in that journey though, and it was no surprise that this was New Order's last record for Factory Records.

Neil Young's second album yielded several of his most enduring hits (including the title tune, "Cowgirl In The Sand," "Cinnamon Girl," and "Down By The River") and firmly established him as a solo artist of the first rank. Though it's impossible to narrow the catalogue of Young and Crazy Horse down to one representative document, this is about as close as you're likely to get. This was Young's first collaboration with the Horse, and it's still one of that group's defining recorded moments. As in much of Young's subsequent work, the feeling of despair moves unabated through the album, which runs the emotional gamut from laconically desperate to psychotically desperate. Despite the gloom, the heavy electric riffing on "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl In the Sand" -two surrealistic odes to an idealized muse - is cathartic and invigorating, easily as riveting as the guitar onslaught of anyone from the Stooges to the Velvet Underground. Young's rootsy, acoustic side comes to the fore on "Round & Round" and "Running Dry". The homespun quality of these songs doesn't leaven the consuming sense of dread that permeates this album, though. Strangely, this expression of angst and emotional disorder became one of Young's most lastingly popular albums, and "Down By The River", "Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl In The Sand" quickly turned into FM staples.

It also features some of his darker compositions, like the entropy-obsessed "Old Man" and the junkie eulogy, "The Needle and the Damage Done", one of Young's most haunting and compelling songs. Deceptively laid-back-sounding country-rock plaints like "Out On The Weekend" and the title cut caress the ear unassumingly, pulling you into the more ominous subtext that is present even in the rollicking "Are You Ready For The Country". As always, Young has an ear for contrasts, laying down heavy rock ("Alabama") beside his balladry, and even employing the London Symphony Orchestra on the excellent confessional "A Man Needs A Maid". Due to back troubles, Young recorded much of this material while wearing a brace, a fact that seems audible in the tension and unease that underlies the friendly, acoustic surface of this superb release.

Rhino continues to retrace the shambolic swath the influential Minneapolis quartet cut across the American Underground, with phase two of the re-issue series of deluxe editions, the four albums from the bands Sire Years: "Tim" (1985), "Pleased To Meet Me" (1987), "Don't Tell A Soul" (1989) and "All Shook Down" (1990). All have been exquisitely remastered and generously embellished with rare and previously unreleased tracks. The first four albums re-issues were released in May 2008 to critical acclaim. Each album contains bonus and unreleased tracks selected by the band members themselves. These deluxe editions are produced by long time manager Peter Jesperson. This album, "Don't Tell A Soul", includes seven bonus tracks half of which are unreleased, including a cover of Slade's "Gudbuy T' Jane".

First-ever compilation from this acclaimed singer-songwriter, spanning seven years and featuring 32 songs on two CDs - favourites, rarities and unreleased gems. Nebraska-born Josh Rouse started out on Rykodisc where he released five albums and two EPs of literate and engaging guitar pop, which garnered him both critical raves and a devoted following. Now, a decade after his debut, "The Best Of The Rykodisc Years" collects together highlights from those Rykodisc albums as well as treasures from Josh's own personal vaults, including seven previously unreleased tracks, to produce over two hours of sublime music spanning 1998-2005. "The Best Of The Rykodisc Years" distils the essence of what Rouse calls his 'first stage'. Years and musical styles may separate these songs, but ultimately they are linked through the warmth of Rouse's voice, the conversational ease of his singing and his unfailing melodic gift. From the folk-rock of "Late Night Conversation" to the knowing country of "It's The Nighttime", from the smart pop of "Feeling No Pain" to the rhythmically sly white-boy soul of "Comeback (Light Therapy)" - each bears Rouse's unmistakable musical fingerprint.

                                                                                                                              The Replacements

Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash

Rhino retraces the shambolic swath the influential Minneapolis quartet cut across the American Underground, reissuing deluxe editions of the band's Twin/Tone releases. All have been exquisitely remastered and generously embellished with rare and previously unreleased tracks. The band was instrumental in selecting the bonus songs, many of which have never been heard-even among the band's most ardent followers. Released in 81, "Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash" was The Replacements' audacious debut. Songs such as "Takin A Ride", "Shiftless When Idle", "Customer" and "Johnny's Gonna Die" herald the band's competing tendencies toward genius and bleary, drunken repugnance. The thirteen bonus tracks open appropriately with the four songs Westerberg gave to Peter Jesperson in 1980 that brought the band to Twin/Tone's attention.

The Replacements issued the EP "Stink" in June 1982. The band was fast becoming Minneapolis' most exciting new group when this 15-minute adrenaline masterpiece hit the streets. All previously unreleased, the four bonus tracks featured here include a trio of session outtakes - "Staples In Her Stomach" and covers of "Hey Good Lookin" and "(We're Gonna) Rock Around The Clock" - plus Westerberg's solo home demo for "You're Getting Married".

Bursting at the seams with ideas and inspiration, "Hootenanny" found the band heading in several new directions. Released in 83, the album included two enduring classics, "Color Me Impressed" and "Within Your Reach". The unreleased bonus tracks include an alternate of "Treatment Bound" and a solo home demo of the lost classic "Bad Worker."

Released in 1984, the 33-minute masterpiece was recently named the #3 'Greatest Indie-Rock Album Ever' by Blender Magazine. The album presents some of the band's strongest songs, including the album opener "I Will Dare", "Androgynous", "Sixteen Blue" and the poignant "Unsatisfied". The five unreleased bonus tracks include a home demo for "Answering Machine", a cover of The Grass Roots' "Temptation Eyes" and an alternate "Sixteen Blue". The bonus material also includes a cover of T Rex's "20th Century Boy" which was originally issued on the 12" maxi-single for "I Will Dare."

The soundtrack album for 2007's feature film Juno, blends indie-rock stand-outs and classic hits for an engaging musical companion to the acclaimed coming-of-age tale. Ellen Page, who stars as Juno in what is being hailed as a major breakthrough performance, was actively involved in selecting music for the film. Highlights include The Moldy Peaches' "Anyone Else But You" (Page and co-star Michael Cera also perform their version to close the album) - Kimya Dawson's "So Nice So Smart" and the Mott the Hoople classic "All The Young Dudes", along with tracks from the likes of Sonic Youth, Belle & Sebastian, Cat Power, The Velvet Underground and The Kinks amongst others.

Music doesn't get any better than this!!!

Classic re-issue from 1986, their debut album didn't quite live up to the splendour of their Factory ep's, but it beats sounding like a poor-man's REM anyday! All quirky rhythms, beautiful words, and an originality that made them stick out from the crowd, this album still sounds fresh and full of intrigue. They were in it for the.....ART man!

Too Much To Dream....Original Group Recordings 1966-67

"Too Much To Dream" celebrates the garage years, the psychedelic years of the original line up of The Electric Prunes. It gathers together their first two albums, "The Electric Prunes" and "Underground", the two non-album singles, their debut, "Ain't It Hard"/"Little Olive" and "Everybody Knows"/"You Never Had It Better". In addition, included are some significantly different mono mixes plus outtakes from the first album sessions, "World Of Darkness" and "I've Got A Way Of My Own", and a final track, "Shadows", that was used over the titles of low budget thriller The Name Of The Game Is Kill.

While it's true to say that when they came together in 1965 The Incredible String Band were, ostensibly, an acoustic folk group, even in these early days they mixed in elements of folk, blues, bluegrass and jazz, akin to an American style jug band, and very different from any other performers or groups on the folk scene in England and Scotland. By the time they released their two most rightly celebrated albums, "The 5000 Spirits" and "The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter" in 1967 and 1968 respectively, The Incredible String Band had come to embody the notion of the hippie ideal. They were extraordinary records, incorporating Indian and African traditions and effectively presenting 'World music' for the first time, some 25 years before the term was coined. Right now, as folk music goes through one of its regular revivals and has become hip once again under the umbrella of nu-folk, alt-folk or twisted folk, call it what you will, The Incredible String Band, now find themselves revered gurus of this new scene. Since the ISP began performing together again in 1999, they have been embraced by these younger musicians both here and in America and just last year flew the flag for the old guard at the Green Man Festival along side the likes of Bonnie Prince Billy, Espers and Joanna Newsom. It's a fitting time to present a new introduction to the Incredible String Band, here drawn from "The Elektra Years", a groundbreaking and exhilarating five year period from 66-71. The collection is a convenient starter pack. You'll hear nothing in the music of today to compare with the unique sound of the Incredible String Band.
