Don't Think I've Forgotten: Cambodia's Lost Rock And Roll (O.S.T.)

40 years ago: April 17, 1975, Phnom Penh fell to the Khmer Rouge and Cambodian rock and roll was no more. Its star musicians were targeted and killed, record collections were destroyed, clubs were closed, and Western-style music-making, dancing, and clothes were outlawed. The deaths of approximately 2 million Cambodians and the horrors of the Killing Fields have been well-documented; add to this John Pirozzi’s fascinating tale of Cambodia’s vibrant pop music scene, beginning in the 1950s and ‘60s, influenced by France’s Johnny Hallyday and Britain’s Cliff Richard and the Shadows. The filmmaker has assembled rare archival footage, punctuating it with telling interviews with the few surviving musicians. Cambodian culture has long been synonymous with a love for the arts.

DON’T THINK I’VE FORGOTTEN pays homage to the country’s rock legends who paid for their creativity with their lives. Through the eyes, words and songs of its popular music stars of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten: Cambodia’s Lost Rock and Roll examines and unravels Cambodia's recent tragic past. Dust-to-Digital is excited to release the soundtrack to such an important film. Compiled by the film’s director, the album is very cinematic in nature. The sequencing and newly-remastered audio transport the listener through the rock and roll history of Cambodia in a similar fashion as John Pirozzi’s documentary film. It is both entertaining and essential to hear so many tracks that are available outside of Cambodia for the very first time.

We've managed to snaffle some copies of this under-the-radar hip-hop comp from last year. "Down The Local" is an absolute gem; featuring a plethora of rappers I haven't heard yet but the UK flavours are strong throughout with each MC having their own unique flow and style with clear regional accent variations indicating a nationwide roster. Meanwhile the instrumentals are rich with that smokey, jazzy, boom-bap flavour synonymous with the golden days of UK hip-hop complete with nice scratch passages and clever sampling.

Real rap heads ain't gonna wanna sleep on this one trrruusst!

Down To The Sea & Back: Volume Tres. The Continuing Journey Of The Balearic Beat - Compiled By Balearic Mike & Kelvin Andrews

After a 10-year hiatus, Balearic Mike and Kelvin Andrews return to continue the journey of the Balearic Beat with another edition of their distinguished Down To The Sea And Back compilation series, presenting a formidable new set of rare and obscure records.

With Vols. 1 and 2, the well loved duo showed us that not only are they serious collectors but chroniclers of a scene, assembling lost gems and unheard marvels into Balearic mythology. Reaping, along the way, accolades such as Piccadilly Records’ Compilation of the Year, and featured on Lauren Laverne’s BBC6 Music show. For Vol. Tres, Mike and Kelvin team up with Copenhagen-based Music For Dreams label – themselves no strangers to the Balearic archives. The compilation features 16 tracks, every selection accompanied by an essential background story in the liner notes of the gatefold vinyl and CD booklet.

As fellow comrade and beloved friend Luke Una puts it: “From Greek acid folk, Balearic bossa, outsider pop and electronic chug, to cosmic machine soul, majestic songs, odd numbers, proto-techno new wave to dubbed out 5am technoid, bass buggin deepness and ethereal outer-space Detroit via San Francisco. This album is a story. A story from the heart, with over three decades digging and grafting in the trenches. In a world of faux, pastiche, counterfeit and aggrorhythm fakes, it oozes a wholesome intuitive authenticity. Majestic songs, odd numbers, cosmic dreaming and late night astral travelling as we all hold on together.”

Downtown Soulville - 24 Solid Blasts Of 60s Soul

Featuring some of the most non-PC lyrics I've ever heard this is a solid 60s soul blast from some of the lesser known bands of the time but the tracks still have a totally authentic sound and feel. Simply wonderful.

Dread Operator From The On-U Sound Archives - Produced By Adrian Sherwood

Hot Milk is back with a crucially wicked box set of some of the most forward thinking and experimental reggae of the early 80’s. Inside you’ll find four studio albums from Adrian Sherwood’s On-U Sound label, including the fourth instalment of the Singers & Players series, two Creation Rebel albums and the other planetary compilation of industrial reggae experiments, Wild Paarty Sounds Vol.1.

Released in 1984 “Leaps & Bounds” by the collective known as Singers & Players features vocal contributions from Prince Far I, Congo Ashanti Roy, Mikey Dread and Bim Sherman. 1981’s “Threat To Creation” is a Creation Rebel/New Age Steppers double billing. Probably the most daring dub album to emerge from the UK, this is the nexus where reggae and post punk collide. Coming out of 1982, Creation Rebel’s “Lows & Highs” featuring vocals from Crucial Tony and Lizard Logan is the most straight ahead reggae album in the box. One for those less experimentally minded, Style Scott lays down the beats next to Eskimo Fox and Donald Campbell. Wild Paarty Sounds is where it all starts to get really weird. There must have been something in the water in 1981, this is Charles and Diana’s child the establishment didn’t want you to know about. An album for those who like reggae influenced by PiL’s Metal Box.

          Dreadzone Presents Dubwiser Volume Two

This edition strikes a darker contrast with the sunnier aspects of Volume One. Lockdown restrictions with minimal contact led to creating new projects remotely which come together here on the second instalment in the compilation series of the wider Dreadzone fold. Greg Dread’s online live sessions over the 18 months brought about a positive energy from all the people tuning in to the music. They became the inspiration for this album which grew out of that time.

Dreadzone’s remix of the Megative cover of Big Audio Dynamite’s Sightsee MC feat. Mick Jones on guitar, Don Letts on vocals and Leo Williams on bass sets the tone for a more eclectic edition of Dubwiser. Collaborations, remixes and artists own tracks make for a stellar line up on Volume Two - Emily Capell, Italian dub maestro Gaudi, Professor Skank, Bazil, Sub Mantra, Dubmatix and Dreadzone all feature on this new compilation.

Dreamin’ Wild - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Acclaimed label Light in the Attic proudly partners with River Road, Zurich Avenue, and Roadside Attractions to release Dreamin’ Wild Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The film follows the real-life story of brothers Donnie & Joe Emerson, whose teenage dreams of rock stardom suddenly came true 30 years later. The soundtrack blends vintage recordings by Donnie & Joe (including the cult favorite “Baby”) with exclusive new performances by Donnie Emerson, Nancy Sophia Emerson, and actor Noah Jupe, plus original score selections by composer Leopold Ross (Black Mirror, A Million Little Pieces).

Jupe, who portrays a young Donnie Emerson, re-recorded several of the duo’s classic songs for the film, including their debut single, “Thoughts in My Mind.” The wistful ballad, which was written and recorded while the brothers were still in high school, was originally released in 1977 on their own Enterprise & Co. label.

The soundtrack also includes “When A Dream Is Beautiful,” a new song by husband-and-wife duo Donnie Emerson and Nancy Sophia Emerson, and recorded in Nashville by the film’s music producer and multi-GRAMMY® winner Dave Cobb.

A true story of love and redemption, Dreamin’ Wild centers around Donnie Emerson (Affleck/Jupe), a middle-aged singer-songwriter who learns that a record label is interested in reissuing the album that he and his brother recorded as teens in rural Washington State. Suddenly, the Emerson brothers find themselves thrust into the spotlight, as their 30-year-old album is hailed as a lost masterpiece. While the album’s rediscovery brings hopes of second chances, it also unearths long-buried emotions as Donnie, his wife Nancy (Deschanel), brother Joe (Goggins/Grazer), and father Don Sr. (Bridges) come to terms with the past and their newly found fame.

Named for the brothers’ 1979 debut album, Dreamin’ Wild is a River Road – Innisfree Production, produced by Academy Award®-winner Jim Burke, Academy® and Emmy®-nominee Pohlad, Kim Roth, Viviana Vezzani, and Karl Spoerri. Casey Affleck served as executive producer, alongside Emmy®-nominee Christa Workman, Dan Clifton, Steven Snyder, and Tobias Gutzwiller.

Dreams To Fill The Vacuum - The Sound Of Sheffield 1978-1988

Extensive 4CD/book set exploring the punk and post-punk sound of the ‘steel city’.

Features classics, rarities, album tracks and TWELVE previously unreleased gems from The Human League, Pulp (and members thereof), Heaven 17, Thompson Twins, B.E.F., Artery, ABC, Clock DVA, Hula, The Danse Society, In The Nursery, Treebound Story and many more.

4CD + hardback book format contains over 20,000 words of artists’ sleevenotes, essays and memoirs from key players in the city’s music scene.

Curated and designed by the people who brought you Manchester – North Of England, Revolutionary Spirit – The Sound Of Liverpool, Silhouettes And Statues, Electrical Language, Scared To Get Happy, Still In A Dream and many more critically acclaimed box sets.

Journey through the music of a generation in one of the UK’s most vibrant and creative cities.

Sheffield in the 1970s…. a city in decline, its steel mills and factories closing and its vast housing estates beginning to crumble. Even the city’s two football teams were both experiencing the worst form in their long histories. An unlikely setting, then, for a musical revolution, but aren’t they always? As it transpired, in the aftermath of punk this industrial backdrop, alive with frustrated young talent and peppered with accessible and affordable rehearsal and performance spaces, became a hotbed of uniquely informed new bands that challenged both the constraints of genre and the dominance of music from London, Liverpool and Manchester.

Dreams To Fill The Vacuum charts the revival of Sheffield and its music in the latter half of the 1970s and throughout the 1980s, from The Human League to Pulp, via Aardvark, Pax and Native Records, and onto the chart successes of Heaven 17, ABC, Thompson Twins and many others. Featuring cornerstone contributions from the city’s brightest stars – Oakey, Cocker, Ware, Marsh, Hawley, Newton and co – alongside many more lesser-known legends, this is a tale of a city and its people rediscovering itself.

Packed with first-hand artist sleevenotes, insightful essays, revealing imagery and brilliant, essential music, Dreams To Fill The Vacuum offers a story in need of telling.

                Drive-Thru Records

An excellently priced four CD boxed set from Drive-Thru records that gathers together the early work of four bands that have gone on to make a real name for themselves on the emo / hardcore /pop punk scene. Included is New York's "The Movielife Has A Gambling Problem" which marked a slicker, poppier side of the band, while still keeping a firm grip on their punk and hardcore roots. The Starting Line "With Hopes Of Staring Over" five tracks of nifty guitar hooks and catchy singalong choruses. California's Finch debut mini album "Falling Into Place" is best described as a cross between Jimmy Eat World and Glassjaw. Energetic, melodic, aggressive and fresh. New Found Glory's seven track mini album of movie cover songs complete's the package.

After a long break, Dub Disco is back with a special package of magical edits. Georg Wedel gets us underway with the exotic, lilting, soft-rock belter "König Dub", which is suitably littered with drifting tape delays as Wedel chops up elements with a deft hand. Aussteiger switches tact for a southern flavoured, porch-rock groove with gospel undertones and irresistible guitar line. No idea where he's dug this from but it's pretty special indeed.

Onto side B and Polyplay deploys a swung, 3/4 future dubber, complete with soulful beatdown vocals on "Durch die Nacht". Craftsmen concludes this head turning set with "Desperado" which pairs pitched up female vox to a rigid breakbeat and gentle subs; a curveball end of night track that completes this odd ball but infectious set beautifully.

Matt says: Another well sourced and re-jigged smattering of oddball dance music from the Dub Disco cartel. Certain to cause head turns, beard twiddles and forceful track ID requests.

Dubstep Allstars Vol. 6 - Mixed By Appleblim

"Dubstep Allstars Vol. 6", the next in the massively acclaimed series that brought the scene its very name, is curated and mixed by Bristol based Producer-DJ, Laurie 'Appleblim' Osborne. Alongside Skull Disco partner Shackleton, Appleblim has forged a sound of his own in both his production and DJ sets affording him interest from Ricardo Villalobos, Radio Slave and Kode 9 amongst others. With his taste falling somewhere between dub and techno, Tempa made the decision to draft in the acutely talented Appleblim in order to showcase another face of dubstep after the dancefloor immediacy of N-Type's "Dubstep Allstars Vol. 5". As with each instalment of the Allstars series the DJ has full control of the selection and as a recognised ambassador of Bristol's musical talent it's no surprise that Bristolian producers including Pinch, Peverlist and Komonazmuk are represented on this CD.

Where does dubstep find itself right now? It's a question that Tempa's scene-defining "Dubstep Allstars" mix CD series has always asked, right since the genre's inception and Hatcha's first instalment back in 2004. Each volume has returned new answers; capturing its own snapshot of a specific side of the sound. The truth, as the series so far has proved, is that dubstep has always been in a state of flux.

And so for "Dubstep Allstars Vol.9" Silkie and Quest waste no time in providing yet another fresh set of answers. Their sound is a hybrid vision: as core members of the Antisocial Entertainment collective, they have over the past few years honed a sound as soulful as it is sub-heavy, seeping grime, jazz, funk and electro into the equation. These aspects to Silkie's music 'came from a desire to emulate the music I loved - garage and 90s R&B,' he explains. 'I feel a compulsion to add the jazz and the soul to the music, and find it harder to leave it out.'

Like many of the series' earlier editions, the duo draw the music on "Dubstep Allstars Vol.09"'s tracks from a small pool of close-knit producers who share a similar attitude. As well as their own music, chief among their contributors is Swindle. It's his "If I Was A Superhero" that opens the CD, electrifying the mix to life. From there the energy swiftly ramps up, passing through Quest's bounding "The Seafront" and Swindle's electro-shocked beast "Belfast" before delving into deeper territory with Quest's slinky "Somewhere". Later, the dread ramps up to staggering intensity with Mala's "Eyez VIP" (a track exclusive to this mix) and the intense pressure of Quest's "Overcome". Throughout, the duo's mixing mirrors the swift responsiveness of their club sets - sometimes wild and unruly, sometimes softer and more languid.

All these threads culminate in the mix's closing 20 minutes in a devastating run of tracks, with Silkie's remixes of Skream and Katy B drawing finally into Quest's rootsy 'Stand', completing the circle and harking back to the genre's origins. It's an appropriate note to end on, remaining respectful of the travels of dubstep past, but always with an eye towards the next step.

Philippa says: This Tempa compilation series brings us the choices of these two core members of the Antisocial Entertainment collective. Over the past few years they've honed a sound as soulful as it is sub-heavy, seeping grime, jazz, funk and electro into the equation. Here we get 24 tracks by them and their pals.

                    Duet Layers

The Layers collections showcase compilations by 7K! Records, supporting a range of contemporary classical music. Duet Layers pays tribute to the first editions of Piano Layers, String Layers, Ambient Layers and Wind Layers, honoring the layers thematic template, and challenging the artists to work together to find a common ground. The results of this are something new and unexpected. The first edition to be pressed on vinyl, Duet Layers contains six duets. The result is a collaborative record written and performed by twelve of the most interesting artists from around the world, a sharing of sonic landscapes.

The release opens with a collaboration between the saxophonist Colin Stetson and pianist Hania Rani. Divided equally between an astonishing piano line, synths, a trace of vocals and the stunning melody of the saxophone. The music finds its feet in silence and developing into a new world full of sounds. The second track slowly moves into an artistic-axis held between Stefano Guzzetti’s piano and Neil Leitner’s (Echo Collective) viola – paying tribute to the slow passage of time. Following, the Polish cellist Dobrawa Czocher and British-Berlin violinist & producer Simon Goff, meet with a dark and poignant track.

The second part of the album sees a collaboration between violinist Bryan Senti, who combines his experimentation with the colorful and sweet soundscape of Niklas Paschburg, playing the piano and accordion. Duet Layers dives further into the unknown with a piece by avant-garde and legendary New York trumpeter Peter Zummo and the Australian electronic producer Tilman Robinson. The release finally finds some relief in the collaboration between Laura Masotto’s viola and the electronic intuitions of Ryan Teague.

Earl's Closet: The Lost Archive Of Earl McGrath 1970-1980

Earl McGrath was the ultimate ’70s jet setter, an art collector and comic bon vivant who stumbled into the record business between legendary parties in New York and LA and discovered Daryl Hall and John Oates and then Jim Carroll. Atlantic founder Ahmet Ertegun gave Earl his own label, Clean Records, in 1970; Mick Jagger hired him to run Rolling Stones Records in 1977.

Friend to Joan Didion, Andy Warhol, and a galaxy of luminaries, Earl was an inveterate tastemaker. Actor Harrison Ford, who before Star Wars fame was Earl’s handyman and pot dealer, called him “the last of a breed, one of the last great gentlemen and bohemians.”

After Earl died in 2016, journalist Joe Hagan, author of the critically-acclaimed Sticky Fingers, the biography of Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner, discovered a trove of rare and unheard tapes in Earl’s apartment in New York—literally inside his closet. “I asked for a step ladder and the first box I pulled off the shelf was a master tape of Some Girls, the Stones album,” says Hagan.

Now Light in the Attic Records proudly presents Earl’s Closet, a double album of the treasures discovered inside, including unheard music by Daryl Hall and John Oates, David Johansen, Terry Allen, Delbert McClinton, Warhol “Superstar” Ultra Violet, Detroit sax legend Norma Jean Bell, Jim Carroll and an eclectic cast of undiscovered artists who once vied for fame and glory—folk, rock, country, funk and R&B gems that virtually no one has heard in decades. Whether it’s the almost-famous power pop of Shadow from Detroit, or the Delfonics-style soul of the Blood Brothers Six, Earl’s Closet retraces the dreams of artists who once sent demos to Earl McGrath. Longtime Light in the Attic-affiliated reissue producer Pat Thomas assisted Hagan in tracking down the artists and finalizing the paperwork.

At once an archival mixtape, a secret history and a journey into the heart of an era, Earl’s Closet features a deep booklet of documents, images and ephemera from Earl’s archive, expansive liner notes by Joe Hagan, who tracked down and interviewed the artists, and astonishing photographs by Earl’s late wife, the Italian countess Camilla Pecci-Blunt McGrath.

Early Works, Vol. 2: Music From The Archives

ATA Records is pleased to announce the release of Early Works Vol.2: Music From The Archives, a compilation of tracks recorded in the fledgling days of the label paired with some rediscovered treasures from more recent years. While the majority of the album is previously unreleased material several tracks have appeared on different formats.

This is a rare chance for listeners to experience the birth of the ATA's enduring concept and recording techniques from the comfort of their own home.

In 2020 label founder and musician Neil Innes decided to destroy the studio he had spent 14-years building, destroy it and rebuild it from the ground up.

Once the studio began to take shape again and Innes was finally able to take a breath he began rooting through the label's archives, pulling out reels that had been propping up tables, holding open doors and generally lurking in nooks and crannies for years.

His trip down memory uncovered a wealth of dusty musical treasures and also got him thinking about tracks from newer artists, nuggets to compliment the archive gold.

Along with the first airings of tracks by The Harmony Society, The Disarrays this 11track comp includes appearances by studio favourites: The Magnificent Tape Band, The Sorcerers, The Mandatory Eight, Ivan Von Engleberger's Asteroid and long time collaborator Chris Dawkins (recording under Earl Dawkins). Also on the comp is Joe Tatton's Bang Bang Boogaloo, previously only released on 7 inch and greatly desired by record diggers everywhere.

Hand delivering you the finest curation of rare and sought-after boogie tracks, officially licensed and for an absolute bargain of a price! This truly is a special collection - meticulously compiled by the Numero crew who you feel must have had to do alot of leg work aquiring the licenses and master tapes of this mighty collection. It's not all just high value for the sake of it either - Donnell Pitman's "Burning Up" remained unreleased till the label unearthered in around 2015, Ronnie Robbins' "Contagious" another example, completely unreleased until discovered and released by Numero - just where are they finding this stuff?!

A completely essential purchase for any boogie lover and another wonderful addition to the Numero catalogue. Highly recommended!

Eccentric Soul: Consolidated Productions Vol. 1

Operating in the farthest margins of L.A.’s cutthroat music business from 1961-1991, Mel Alexander’s Consolidated Productions was among the longest running Black-owned independent record conglomerates of the 20th century. Caught up in a confusing web of imprints— including Ajax, Angel Town, Car-A-Mel, Emanuel, and Kris—this first volume gathers 28 smoldering R&B cuts by the likes of Lee Harvey, B.B.Carter, Marilyn Calloway, Del Reys, Deb Tones, De Velles, Gene Russell ’s Trio, Jimmy “Preacher” Ellis, and Ty Karim. Remastered from the original 1 /4” tapes, Consolidated Productions Vol. I includes carefully researched annotation, discography, and photographs from a vital producer.

                                                Eccentric Soul: The Shoestring Label

Operating in a basement studio at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers, pipeline man Howard Neal and his appropriately named Shoestring label was Alton, Illinois’ answer to a question no one asked. Pressed in minuscule numbers and barely outside the 62002 zip code, the singles by The James Family, Jimmie Green, Pete & Cheez, and Carletta Sue are prime examples of cosmic midwestern disco in search of a break. This heavy weight 10-song LP is housed in a tip-on sleeve, and includes an essay and imagery that complete the picture of this pure expression of small- town soul.

                                                  Eccentric Soul: The Tammy Label

Lost in the soot and fallout from Youngstown, Ohio’s infamous Black Monday steel industry collapse was Tony March’s cross-generational Tammy label. From its early days as a doo wop powerhouse to their last gasps chasing disco hits, Tammy unintentionally documented Youngstown’s small but prolific Black music scene. This single LP surveys the label’s best R&B, soul, funk, and disco, with 13 tracks from Ice Cold Love, Lynn Minor, J.C. and the Soul Angels, The Snapshots, Iron Knowledge, Roy Jefferson, and Steel City Band. Housed in a deluxe tip-on jacket, with a booklet crammed full of notes and ephemera, The Tammy Label continues Numero’s 20 year tradition of preserving regional Ohio music.

Four Tracks - You Mean Everything To Me

New music from Echo Chamber featuring a nice smattering of bass and beats. LQ kicks things off with "Way Down" feat. Ben Dudding and remixed by Dubkasm. It's an upbeat, steppers rhythm with cavernous and splashy reverbs and catchy ear worm bassline. Proper solid stuff for the dance. LQ & MSHCode then take the track into breakout jungle business; getting heavy with the amens and the timestretch to create a fierce jungle roller that'll blow the roof off - mahoosive!

Kloke and LQ drop "Bubblers" on side B - a rootsical dubwise jungle track executed in that perfectly classic style. Full of echoed out rastaman vox and hardcore ruffage. Duburban & Galvatron conclude with the amazing summer jam "Let Off The Music" which utilizes a delicious palette of guitar, flute and keys to sizzle up a pure party spirit that'll large up and garden parties and festival daytime slots as we reach the sunnier months.

Following the hugely popular first ‘Acid Jazz (Not Jazz)’ release in 2022, label heads Eddie Piller and Dean Rudland return with a second volume, ‘We’ve Got A Funky Beat’.

The record further takes in the club sounds of the original acid jazz scene in the early 1990s, where obscure funk, soul and rock records were mixed with new productions that turned up at the Acid Jazz (then Denmark Street) offices on a near-daily basis.

A document of an era, before the internet, where clubs and record stores informed the tastes and direction of the burgeoning London music community and the close-knit groups of producers, musicians, label and shop owners that were constant companions in search of the new sound.

Ballistic Brothers and X-Press 2 appear alongside unsung heroes such as Night Trains and The Hightower Set.

Presented in a beautiful geometric graphic sleeve, with a printed inner sleeve documenting the original release designs.

It was in Benin City, in the heart of Nigeria, that a new hybrid of intoxicating highlife music known as Edo Funk was born. It first emerged in the late 1970s when a group of musicians began to experiment with different ways of integrating elements from their native Edo culture and fusing them with new sound effects coming from West Africa´s night-clubs. Unlike the rather polished 1980´s Nigerian disco productions coming out of the international metropolis of Lagos Edo Funk was raw and reduced to its bare minimum. Someone was needed to channel this energy into a distinctive sound and Sir Victor Uwaifo appeared like a mad professor with his Joromi studio. Uwaifo took the skeletal structure of Edo music and relentless began fusing them with synthesizers, electric guitars and 80´s effect racks which resulted in some of the most outstanding Edo recordings ever made. An explosive spiced up brew with an odd psychedelic note known as Edo Funk.

That's the sound you'll be discovering in the first volume of the Edo Funk Explosion series which focusses on the genre's greatest originators; Osayomore Joseph, Akaba Man, and Sir Victor Uwaifo: Osayomore Joseph was one of the first musicians to bring the sound of the flute into the horn-dominated world of highlife, and his skills as a performer made him a fixture on the Lagos scene. When he returned to settle in Benin City in the mid-1970s - at the invitation of the royal family - he devoted himself to the modernisation and electrification of Edo music, using funk and Afro-beat as the building blocks for songs that weren't afraid to call out government corruption or confront the dark legacy of Nigeria's colonial past. Akaba Man was the philosopher king of Edo funk. Less overtly political than Osayomore Joseph and less psychedelic than Victor Uwaifo, he found the perfect medium for his message in the trance-like grooves of Edo funk. With pulsating rhythms awash in cosmic synth-fields and lyrics that express a deep personal vision, he found great success at the dawn of the 1980s as one of Benin City's most persuasive ambassadors of funky highlife. Victor Uwaifo was already a star in Nigeria when he built the legendary Joromi studios in his hometown of Benin City in 1978. Using his unique guitar style as the mediating force between West-African highlife and the traditional rhythms and melodies of Edo music, he had scored several hits in the early seventies, but once he had his own sixteen-track facility he was able to pursue his obsession with the synesthetic possibilities of pure sound, adding squelchy synths, swirling organs and studio effects to hypnotic basslines and raw grooves.

Between his own records and his production for other musicians, he quickly established himself as the godfather of Edo funk. What unites these diverse musicians is their ability to strip funk down to its primal essence and use it as the foundation for their own excursions inward to the heart of Edo culture and outward to the furthest limits of sonic alchemy. The twelve tracks on Edo Funk Explosion Volume 1 pulse with raw inspiration, mixing highlife horns, driving rhythms, day-glo keyboards and tripped-out guitars into a funk experience unlike any other.

Eins Und Zwei Und Drei Und Vier - Deutsche Experimentelle Pop-Musik 1980-86

A double album and single CD exploring the explosion of wealth of music springing from the squats and bedsits and artschools of Cologne, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and West Berlin in the aftermath of punk from the likes of Der Plan, Holger Hiller, Palais Schaumberg, Conrad Schnitzler and a host more.

Do not adjust your sets. Take a step back from the tracking. This is the sound of Germany’s musical youth let loose on cheap synths and pawnshop guitars. A record of a disparate s cene of squat pop-stars, artschool upstarts and committed non-musicians who redefined German music in the first half of the 1980s.

By the dawn of the new decade, punk had burnt out in a frenzy of feedback, reshaping the musical landscape before burrowing back into the underground for a period of reinvention. But the scorched earth it left behind proved to be fertile soil, nurturing a new movement grass-rooting through Germany’s major cities. For the first time the country had its own youth culture, spilling out of the squats of Hamburg and West Berlin, occupying the art scene in Düsseldorf and Köln and congregating around independent record shops stocked with angsty import 7”s. Empowered by punk’s DIY spirit, these kids valued conviction over competence, opting to ignore the industry and make music for themselves, sung in their own language. Even the cats we now call krautrock, revolutionary though they were, mostly sang in English, adopting the lingua franca of rock & roll as a shorthand for authenticity for a native crowd who wouldn’t have it any other way. This new scene rejected the expected, celebrating freedom of expression above all else. Armed with unconventional instruments, newly affordable electronics and rudimentary recording gear, they worked from the ground up, building basic rhythms and simple melodies into mutant grooves and following their imagination wherever it took them. The result was a genre-fluid wave of fusion pop pulled from funk, punk, jazz and reggae; united in attitude rather than aesthetic. Lyrically, the groups explored the serious and silly, embracing the irreverence of dadaism to deliberately displease the earnest alternativen of the older generation.

For their second foray into the fringes of German pop, Bureau B delve deeper than before, raiding cassette culture, 7" obscurities and overlooked album cuts to further frame this free- thinking strain of sonic expression. Starting the count from punk’s year zero, this set sees a newly liberated generation get weird and wild with anything they could lay their hands on, delivering demented, detuned and disorienting tracks brimming with DIY spirit. Where their kosmische predecessors preferred immersive, expansive compositions, these artists opted for immediacy, quickly capturing one idea before moving on to the next. Exploiting advances in home recording to say outside of industry confines, these art-school extroverts and commune drop outs often came together in unplanned collaborations and one off projects, capturing their whole creative lifespan on one side of a C45. As such, there’s a youthful charm to the sounds found on this compilation – an infectious combination of energy, expression and naivety running though each unlikely melody. This shift in approach and outlook even informed established acts, as evidenced by the perverse pop curiosities from Cluster and Moebius & Beerbohm lurking on the line up beside unreleased and un- remembered gems from the likes of Maria Zerfall and E.M.P.

Once again those expert selectors at Bureau B have done the hard work, digging deep to deliver a disparate, different and dissident side of German Pop Music. All you have to do is press play.

The sparse drum machine of ALU’s »Aludome« opens proceedings, laying the foundation for wavy guitar chords and simple melodies on this tender 1980 composition, which only came to light in 2005. From there we sink into the watery electronics, free jazz bass and abstract guitars of Detlef Diederichsen charmingly abrupt »Pissnelke 2000«, before Maria Zerfall moves us into the shadows with the dark and punkish dirge »Der Mond«, a haunting track with double tracked and distorted spoken vocals. Butzmann / Kapielski’s avant-dance masterpiece »Do The VoPo« diverts us to the dance-floor, where the oddball synth sounds and skewed sampler vox of Rüdiger Lorenz’ »Francis & Friends« traps us in a strange slow motion groove. The tempo raises via E.M.P.’s dubbish sabotage of 80s smooth jazz, turns inside out on Vono’s charming interlude “Der Zauberer”, then finds its feet again via Reichmann’s ’78 composition »Wunderbar« taken from the Sky LP of the same name. This frazzled fusion of cosmic country and Asiatic melody shares a widescreen worldview with Deux Baleines Blanches’ »Draht 9«, on which post punk electronics and chiming guitars combine with bittersweet beauty. The time-travelling Rolf Trostel takes us to the midpoint with pulsating chords which predate Basic Channel by a decade, while Phantom Band’s »Dream Machine« stitches together two decades of the psychedelic continuum in a riot of tumbling toms, panning sequences and brain melting waveforms. »Glucose« sees Moebius & Beerbohm unleash their strange music at a delinquent tempo, before Jimmy, Jenny + Jonny offer a second subversion of smooth jazz with their skronking Mediterranean fantasy »Salome«. Thomas Dinger’s frosty music box romance »Alleewalzer« and The Wirtschaftswunder’s stomping ska-like »Television« follow in quick succession, leading us into Cluster’s narcotic fairground »Oh Odessa«, a queasy assemblage of detuned FM bells and percussive piston bursts. From there, the dubbed out post punk of Sprung Aus Den Wolken, experimental dance of Notorische Reflexe and unhinged disco of Günter Schickert capture different ends of the alternative dance floor, before the pastoral outsider pop of Lapre’s »Septer« signs in a swell of yearning melody.

                                                                  TRACK LISTING

Electric Jesus (Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture)

During the mid-1980s heavy metal music was under attack on multiple fronts. Tipper Gore's Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) was fighting metal in the halls of congress, while Christian evangelists like Bob Larson waged war on the music from the pulpit. Their messaging was effective, convincing some parents that metal music would turn their children into sex-crazed, suicidal satanists. Metal records were forbidden in households across the United States, creating space for the rise of a new market within the music industry. It was in the midst of this culture war that Christian metal emerged in American popular culture.

The Los Angeles-based band Stryper became the face of Christian metal when their 1986 album To Hell with the Devil went platinum, earning the band Grammy nominations, and regular rotation on MTV. Stryper's unprecedented success inspired a generation of young Christian metalheads. Electric Jesus tells the story of one of those groups, a fictional teenage Christian metal band called 316. Set in 1986, the film offers an affectionate look at '80s Christian youth culture as it documents 316's journey from playing bible camp talent shows and church lock-ins, to performing at Christian music festivals and hardcore metal nightclubs. Any decent fictional rock biopic requires a convincing soundtrack, and Electric Jesus' director Chris White found the perfect collaborator in Daniel Smith. Smith is a prolific figure in indie rock, having worked under the Danielson moniker (and its variations- Danielson Famile, Brother Danielson) over the past two decades. Smith is known for his highly unique vocal style, which is characterized by the frequent use of a screeching falsetto. Serendipitously, this sound overlaps perfectly with the screaming falsetto vocals of hair metal. Smith also brings a nuanced sensitivity to the film's source material. His father is a prominent Christian music songwriter, and Smith's own work carries a deeply spiritual perspective. Smith's experience brings a credible authenticity to the project. While the lyrics were handled by director Chris White, Smith composed, or co-composed all of 316's original music and the results are spot-on. While composing for Electric Jesus, Smith immersed himself in the hair metal music of his youth, binge-listening to a steady rotation of bands like Ratt, Twisted Sister, and Motley Crew.

In addition to the music of 316, the Electric Jesus soundtrack features new material from Smith's Danielson projects featuring four new proper Danielson songs (including the fantastic sunshine pop of Danielson's Beach Boys-influenced "You Can Fly"), plus a track from Steve Taylor & the Danielson Foil, and instrumental score by Smith's "Familyre Friends". The soundtrack also contains music Smith composed for 316's black metal rivals Satan's Clutch, and Bloody Mass. But it's the music of 316 that forms the centerpiece of this 21 track release. All of 316's songs are expertly voiced by actor Wyatt Lenhart, who is also the onscreen frontman of 316. The chemistry of this ensemble is best experienced on the album's lead single, 316's hilariously bombastic "Commando For Christ" one of the most brilliant send-ups of metal music since This Is Spinal Tap. The magic of what Smith and his crew have done here is to create a set of music that speaks to all of these responses. They clearly understand the inherent absurdities of hair metal, while also conveying a sincere affinity for the style.

The year – 1978. The mood – revolution. The latest addition to the musician’s sound palette – the synthesiser. And so a new sound was born, and one which would free pop music from its guitar dominated tradition into something with a bright new future which would write itself. Almost overnight, via a handful of key single releases, the big bang of punk produced something the kids called ‘synth-pop’. The clue was very much in the name. A broad church from the outset, this synth-pop movement wasted no time in embracing players from all corners of the musical dressing up box. From guitar groups drafting in a keyboard playing friend and the progressive rockers using their expensive banks of electronics in new ways to the modernists and the Thatcherists, full of unabashed aspiration, and the punks – arguably the purest punks of them all – who discarded the guitar and the drum kit overnight in their pursuit of something fresh that their generation could truly call their own. All were welcome, and all contributed to the many different directions synth-pop would mutate in over the coming five or six years. ‘Electrical Language’ captures this time and place in microscopic detail.

This 4CD/80 track set explores the independent side of the UK’s post-punk synth-pop boom. "The release of the Electronic Music Travels albums is an incredibly special moment for me in that it represents several years of friendships, collaboration, creativity and personal investment in the wonderful world of electronic music. I never imagined for a moment when I ran the first Electronic Music Open Mic (EMOM) in Manchester in early 2017 that it would lead to UK wide, European (and Australian) events, as well as a music travel book, CD compilations and a sexy vinyl release on an amazing emerging record label. All I wanted to do was have some fun with music in a space that was supportive and encouraging to everyone involved, those with ambitions plus those with no ambitions, people who enjoyed making music and wanted to test it out in a live environment. At that time there were very few places for electronic and experimental artists to meet up and play, there still aren’t enough, but at least the EMOM movement has contributed to making such spaces available.

When Electronic Music Travels (the book) was published via Werra Foxma Records in 2020 it sold out in just a few months. This was a massive surprise to me as I’ve grown so used to getting minimal interest in my art and music. I keep going because it’s in my bloodstream and I can’t help myself. It’s part of my DNA. Many of the people who bought the book were actively involved in the EMOM movement as organisers, performers and supporters. Many of those people were also mentioned in the book which gave a snapshot of grass roots electronic music making around the UK and beyond. For this reason it seemed natural to me that the money raised from the book sales should be used to fund something exciting for the community in the form of an exciting music release. A vinyl release was the obvious choice but in discussions with Frazer of Werra Foxma Records I soon appreciated the time limitations of this format. We opted for a vinyl release with complementary CD releases so we could cover as wide a range of artists as possible. The process of choosing the music to include from the many brilliant submissions was a tough one and sometimes led to some lively debates and communications. There simply wasn’t room for all the submissions to be included so we aimed to select previously unreleased material and give a sense of the amazing range of electronic and experimental music that is being made at this time. This we hoped would emulate a typical EMOM night where soundscape artists follow DJ sets, synth pop performers and modular enthusiasts. I truly believe we have achieved that great mix and that these releases represent a moment in time when fabulous music is being made and should be heard.

I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who submitted music to these albums and to all the artists and supporters involved in the EMOM community. It’s amazing how new friendships and allegiances have been formed from the simple act of bringing people together in a live music setting. I’ve always tried to espouse the view that whatever happens this is not about one individual and what they do. It’s about what we all do to support each other and what we all bring to the table. That table is waiting for you on the stage of an EMOM night somewhere out there. Go and listen to what others are doing and let them listen to what you are doing and most of all have fun along the way. It makes our music travels so much more interesting.

In support of their forthcoming Bob Moog documentary 'Electronic Voyager', Waveshaper Media have produced a compilation LP of Moog recordings from the 1960s. The first compilation of its kind, "Electronic Voyages: Early Moog recordings 1964-1969" contains tracks by Robert Arthur Moog, Herbert Deutsch, Joel Chadabe, Lothar and the Hand People, Intersystems, Ruth White, Max Brand, and Paul Earls. All of these tracks, released here on vinyl in an edition of 1000 copies, have been scarcely heard and difficult to track down, with all but three of them previously unreleased on vinyl.

Bypassing the Moog synthesizer’s backseat appearance on key pop recordings by the likes of the Beatles, the Doors, and the Beach Boys, "Electronic Voyages..." aims to highlight the diverse approach of 1960s musicians and composers who adopted the Moog as their primary instrument; these recordings all feature the Moog synthesizer front and centre. Beginning with an audio letter ("The Abominatron") from Bob Moog to his musician-muse Herbert Deutsch, demonstrating some of the first Moog synthesizer prototype’s capabilities, "Electronic Voyages" veers from avant-garde and electronic soundscapes, to psychedelic madness and summer-of-love pop. In the 1960s, the Moog synthesizer was a new, groundbreaking instrument, and its use was completely uncharted territory. The pioneering use of the Moog on all of these recordings sounds fresh today - you can sense the wide-eyed exploratory delight unfolding, and the disparate results range from endearingly naive (Lothar and the Hand People, Paul Earls) to downright eerie (Ruth White, Intersystems).

The musicians and composers behind these "Electronic Voyages" may have been among the first to adopt Moog synthesizers, but the fact that they so readily found within them expressivity, heart, and a means to translate their wondrous sense of discovery, speaks far more to Bob Moog’s visionary invention and enduring legacy. A triumph!

Most of these songs see a vinyl release for the very first time (only Malena y Belcebu's song had previously been released), coming straight from obscure demos. Comes with an extensive 32 pages booklet with plenty of photos, reviews, bios and other awesome shit.

                                                                            Elsewhere VXIII

From its genesis on the sun-drenched streets of Tirana, Albania to the wider sonic spheres inhabited by adventurous heads everywhere, Brussels-based deep digger soFa has assembled a fresh outing in his eclectic compilation series. Whilst the Elsewhere banner has previously focused on unorthodox spaces of the dancefloor via a series of different labels, including experimental imprints like Emotional Response, Music For Dreams and Kalahari Oyster Cult.

The latest instalment is something else entirely. Elsewhere VXII is a beguiling collection of songs and soundscapes that form a bridge between the traditional and the otherworldly. This gathering of outernational rhythms, drones and folk tales takes in a dizzying array of cultures and folkloric traditions, mapping out their common ground with style and finesse. Here we witness a Romanian Christian carol (from Colinde Netemperate) side by side with glacial abstraction from a Mexican artist based in Belgium (Vica Pachecho) The ritualistic mantras of Ladr’ache share headspace with the beatific acid folk of Odessey And Oracle. Meanwhile, ululatory drone-based rapture (courtesy of NÅR) marries with electronic reinterpretations of Greek rural serenades from Anna vs June.Unified by deep roots in yet branching out fearlessly into the unknown, all these stylings and more cohere and coalesce into an intoxicating patchwork. Yet as much as it may be driven by a DJ’s internal logic, this is primarily a work of border-free serendipity. The same forces that introduced soFa to the violin of Aida Al Hani while walking in Tirana, forging the impetus for this collection, are those that sent both soFa and Rocket Recordings in the direction of NÅR for the album entirely independently of each other. Navigating currents and vibrations that unite the globe, Elsewhere VXIII is a psychic transmission from a singular place where the stars align.

Each year, in the weeks that follow End of the Road, the festival’s founder, Simon Taffe, receives a flurry of emails. There are notes of thanks, of course, and the tying up of festival business, but in amongst them he will find numerous messages asking urgent questions such as: “What was that song playing two songs before Mac DeMarco came on?” It was in answer to these persistent queries that End of the Road decided to launch the first of what will be an ongoing compilation series: Between the Music.

“A compilation based on all the tracks that I play in between bands on all the different stages. It’s not really necessarily bands that play End of the Road, it’s more like my whole record collection.”

Taffe has distinct memories of going to festivals that hadn’t given much thought to the music playing between performers; the repetition of it, the sudden jolt of it. When End of the Road first began, he was determined that his festival would not make the same oversight.

Before the first ever End Of The Road, Simon sat up all night with a friend, burning songs to CDs, considering every stage and every track in detail. He has continued this approach ever since, always finishing his playlists at the eleventh hour, always spurred on by the thought of what song will you have as the first song opening the main stage.

“I still get really excited to make a compilation, even though it’s a lot bloody harder these days because everyone’s heard everything on Spotify,” he says. “But I love sharing music with people and love introducing them to songs.”

To listen to Between the Music is something akin to spending a short while in Taffe’s company, or perhaps a long weekend at his festival. There is the sheer exuberant love for music, the sense of discovery, the delight in the unexpected rhythmic turn. Above anything, there is the feeling that Between the Music is a compilation series that could just play on forever.

Importantly standing against reforms to the Mental Health Act and cuts to budgets via the Government’s policy of Austerity, they have led a campaign of direct action and protest to protect the civil rights of patients. An organisation of mental health users and supporters, they sought to reclaim the lexicon of taboo words like mad, crazy and nutter and in effect turn around those negative words into a badge of honour, whilst also expressing a rich and creative culture. Having a mental health problem is no bar to being creative, as Mad Pride have proved time and time again.

Enrages Fou Noix (in English Mad Crazy Nuts) is just the latest in many collections issued by the group and features a wealth of musical talent. Peppering the collection are pithy, comic and moving spoken word pieces by Manchester-based poet and mental health survivor Carol Batton. The music presented is very diverse, featuring electronica, dance, post punk and even the frantic noise rock of Guttersnipe’s Soft Poison Lurk, but is frequently inspired. Enrages features some familiar names to independent music connoisseurs plus some intriguing newcomers – which leads overall to a great mix. - Louder Than War

“Enter The Decagon” assembles friends of the label - near and far - for further excursions into the abyss of industrial, folk, jazz and ambient music.

From Copenhagen hails Kristi Brud (Bride of Christ) extending us with a shimmering violin contemplation initially made for the short art film piece The Abduction of Europa, absorbing a modal ambiance of harmonics rooted in central European renaissance. Recorded in Svalöv in rural Skåne comes a hillbilly folk jazz piece constructed by Joel and Ivar on equal parts violin, flute, upright bass and percussion, recorded somewhere in the misty era of of 2012-2015. Then, an interlude follows, reconstructed from the very early live sets of the label's own Inre Kretsen Grupp, laden with tuned metallic percussions and synthesized bow sounds. Following up, the idiosyncratic local talent Fai Ling offers a piece of Basinski/Hassel-esque horn repetitions in full deterioration. Concluding the A-side of the compilation is the band that never was - the only released material of Prins Emanuel and Golden Ivy's Börringe Kloster project - encapsulating their minimal maximal approach of low quality sound samples turned in to a wall of sound of rhythm of sorts.

The B-side picks up on different musings in the form of ambient cadence and carefully sculpted soundscapes signed Phillipp Otterbach, who gives us an unraveling journey into kalimba-hampered harmonies carried through a bed of industrial, synthesized sounds. Moonilena follows up with an eerie yet beautiful minimal composition of radio disturbances and repetitive, ear catching melodies.
Breaking the barrier of stillness, local producer and Catholic chant music fiend Digge Shim performs a rhytmical, tongue-in-cheek number that pulls widely from both the hymnal traditions of medieval Europe as well as the zonked out ambient trance sounds you'd meet in a mid nineties Goa chill-out room.
Near the tip of the decagon, we find the Cypriot producer, singer and lyricist Spivak presenting us with a feeling of the-familiar-but-never-heard in the form of an ambient pop breakbeat number with carefully crafted choirs oscillating on top - hauntingly beautiful and equally danceable.

Ending in the best of styles, well-mannered umarel and purveyor of drum-smitten metallic sounds shows us what Moisture is really about - the mental image of finding your true self dancing in purgatory in a never-released Kenneth Anger film set, encumbered with red lights and occult paraphernalia.

The music itself runs the gamut of minimal synth anthems, d.i.y. jazz punk, grey industrial sci-fi and new wave disco crossovers. All are linked by an outsider sensibility and also a determination that any skill deficiencies could be overcome by sticking to the new born mantra of the times " Minimalist Music for the Masses " Matt escaped his post punk cassette culture past in the later eighties by forming the cartoon-improvising, electronic sampling beast known as Stock, Hausen & Walkman. Often accused of "Making music ABOUT music!" I'm not sure that's a bad thing considering how much music we find ourselves wading through these days.

Fans of his records include, Mike D ( beastie boys ), autechre, Jarvis Cocker, Lady Miss Kier ( deee-lite ), Harry Hosono (Yellow Magic Orchestra), Matt Groening, John Peel R.I.P., Thurston Moore and probably a few others? but there is no guarantee any of those people share YOUR taste or ineffable sense of style.

Last year, EPM celebrated 20 years in the business with a series of vinyl EPs and a compilation. Now they've enlisted Shed, CYRK, Inigo Kennedy and Works of Intent to remix some of those 'EPM20' tracks.

On the A-side, the highly acclaimed and always uncompromising Shed (one of the many aliases of Berlin's René Pawlowitz) delivers a raw and tribal take on Regis 'Beyond The Reach Of Time'. From one legend to a current electro phenomenon CYRK, fresh off the back of their collaborative 'Freundschaft' album on Burial Soil turn their hand to Freddie Fresh's 'ProMars' adding their own style of tuff 'lectro funk.

Flip over for one of the UK's techno warriors, Inigo Kennedy, as the Asymmetric man goes all out on his ominously epic and bass laden remix of 'Io' by Bryan Chapman. To close the EP is UK electronic artist and DJ, Works of Intent (f.k.a. R.O.S.H) with a twisted remix of Paul Mac's 'Nothing Remains' bringing in elements of rave, breaks and sci fi sonics.

Queue EPM with another instalment of their 20th anniversary series. If your nethers are intact after that Regis opening blow; I'm sure the remaining three wrecking balls should have you scanning the underwear section of Primark pretty pronto.

And having presented the best in upfront techno and electro, the label turns its attention to house music, commissioning four brand new and exclusive tracks from artists who represent the EPM sound moving forward through the next decade.

First up is none other than a Detroit techno founding father and the TechnoSoul innovator himself Eddie Fowlkes, who delivers a classy opener in "1-2-3" that’s deep yet vibrant and showcases his legendary status. Next is a fellow Motor City modernizer, Jon Dixon whose musicianship and productive talent takes him from jazz to techno which he skilfully brings to "Mack & Bewick". Motech Records’ founder DJ 3000 brings us the spirit of "Summer 1995" as he briefly steps away from techno to give us this uplifting sun-drenched stunner. Final track "The Beat" comes from Rico & Sonny, the pseudonym of Chicago based DJ duo and production team of Adam Stolz and the talented Tim Baker, recorded before his devastating and untimely passing.

Erased Tapes release the results of their 20・・---0 project on June 12th 2021.

"Especially in this time of isolation we need to remind ourselves of the importance of art, just how magical a medium sound is to express, to raise and answer question marks, to open and mend the soul… it’s the most universally speaking of all languages as it knows no borders." At a time of global separation, Erased Tapes founder and sonic explorer Robert Raths stitched together a project putting what is most important at the forefront — connection. This collection of works by undisclosed artists from the roster gives space and time to appreciate art at its most honest. By shedding the information noise usually attached to release cycles and by bringing music back to the magic of sound, we're presented with an opportunity for exploration when we need it most. Robert spoke to Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC 6Music about how releasing music without revealing its origin through the 20・・--0 morse code series enabled him to share what him and the artists have been working on in real-time as opposed to the usual delays that come with releasing music.

"All the information, all that noise… As much as it can help give context, it also takes something away. It tends to cloud your senses and take away from the magic of when you first hear something that’s completely unknown to your ears. How wonderful a sensation it is to just listen and let the music speak for itself without prejudice or the need for any references." — Robert Raths

                                                                                            Erased Tapes Artists - 1+1=X

“I suppose finding words and meaning to describe this release would be next to impossible. This recording was a real joy, to go back to our humble beginnings. To have the freedom to create art only for ourselves was truly sublime” — Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie of A Winged Victory For The Sullen

Erased Tapes rounds off a jubilant year of tenth anniversary celebrations with a very special release, 1+1=X, a set of exclusive music from every artist on the label. Featuring never before heard tracks from Nils Frahm, Kiasmos and A Winged Victory For The Sullen, 1+1=X sees Erased Tapes artists come together to make an album as a collective. Sharing the same space, instruments and each others’ capabilities during a residency at Vox-Ton studio in Berlin, they recorded 20 songs to mark the label's 10-year history.

Between August 2016 and 2017, each artist arrived with a new composition or an improvisation to record at Vox-Ton. Run with much love and care by Italian engineer Francesco Donadello – who has worked on many Erased Tapes recordings before including A Winged Victory For The Sullen, Michael Price and Lubomyr Melnyk – it is one of the few studios left where it’s still possible to record fully analogue, isolated from the city noise and in a room that can fit a large ensemble. Reflective of the communal spirit, 1+1=X is the result of an ambitious undertaking; to create a singular record as a collective, not just a compilation of songs, that celebrates the benefits of community over individuality and improvisation over rigorous planning.

“As much as Erased Tapes probably wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for the digital age, we should also remind ourselves of what we are capable of without it,” adds Raths. “1+1=X is a testament of what can be achieved when we work together as a collective, which is more than the sum of what we can achieve as individuals.”

The majority of songs on this album feature contributions from multiple performers, whether it’s Nils Frahm duetting on the keys with Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Cafe, Kiasmos being joined by Högni and a string ensemble, Douglas Dare’s one-take ‘Darling’ featuring Rival Consoles on synths, Masayoshi Fujita on vibes and Raths himself controlling the tremolo on his voice. Peter Broderick’s ‘The Perpetual Glow’ meanwhile, brings in a full big band and choir where everyone present, including the studio staff, was invited to grab any instrument and join in. Every song has a unique story and approach – in-themoment decisions and little accidents that could only come out of these kinds of circumstances where people work together in the same space, sparking off each other and their environment. Even Rival Consoles’ remix of Daniel Brandt’s ‘Blackpool Sands Forever’ was conceived of in the studio kitchen during recording breaks.

Japanese vocal performer Hatis Noit decided to bring a field recording of the ocean with her, which she had taken near the Fukushima power plant after participating in a memorial ceremony for the opening of the evacuation area. It is also no coincidence that the album opens with ‘Brutal Moderna’ by Qasim Naqvi (Dawn of Midi) and A Winged Victory For The Sullen’s ‘Long May It Sustain’, which were both recorded on the day the U.S. election results came in. “Qasim asked me to read the news headlines with a stutter over the top of his piece. It was an oddly beautiful experience which brought all of us together on a day when spirits were otherwise a bit low,” says Peter Broderick. “I thought this residency was a wonderful idea. In fact I would have loved to be there for more of it. I made some amazing new friends, some stronger bonds with old friends and some wonderful pieces of music that I’m honoured to be a part of. Robert has often described Erased Tapes as a family, and perhaps above all else this was just his earnest effort to bring the family together. I hope we’ll have some reunions in years to come!”

Ernesto Chahoud’s "Taitu" is a collection of soul-fuelled stompers straight from the dancefloors of 1970s Addis Ababa. A breathless journey through the unique Ethio sound that bands were forging at the time, the 24 track compilation is the result of the Lebanese DJ and crate digger’s decade long love affair with the ‘golden age’ of Ethiopian music. Among the musical gems featured are 7”s by some of the heavyweights of the scene including the godfather of Ethio jazz Mulatu Astatke and Alemayehu Eshete, the vocalist dubbed the ‘Ethiopian Elvis’, alongside tracks by more obscure artists such as Merawi Yohannis and Birkineh Wurga.

For ‘Taitu’, Chahoud has selected 24 of his essential Ethio-Soul 7”s, that never leave his DJ box, and together they capture this opportune moment in Ethiopian music history that saw bands experiment with an armful of influences: gliding through R&B, rock & roll, jazz, funk, soul and boogaloo. What came out was a distinctly Ethiopian interpretation: pentatonic scales, horn-driven melodies and soul-shattering vocals sung in Amharic. The songs are difficult to box in to one genre but they share a simplicity and rawness, added to by their lo-fi quality - with many recordings made in rudimentary studios with only a couple of mics for the entire band.

From the R&B stomper ‘Honey Baby’ by Alemayehu Eshete to Astatke’s swaggering ethnic-jazz instrumental ‘Emnete’ and the bluesy melancholic vocals of Hirut Bekele on ‘Ewnetegna Feker’, ‘Taitu’ is a window in on the exciting records being made in Ethiopia in the 1970s and comes fully endorsed by us here at Picc HQ.

Phantasy release ‘Reworks Volume 1’, a comprehensive collection of remixes from prodigious DJ and producer Erol Alkan.

‘Reworks Volume 1’ is a musical overview of what makes Erol Alkan one of his generation’s most iconic remixers. Framing a corner of his career in perspective - a success in taking on any source material and melding it into something of his own. Alkan’s philosophy towards a remix is to ‘re-produce’ work as if the original never existed. Avoiding methods like the transplanting of a vocal on a contemporary dance beat, or adding a four-to-the-floor 808 kick drum underneath a rock band, Alkan instead takes a considered approach to build something new that offers a fresh and divergent take on the music in front of him.

This collection of reworks illustrates that his distinct style of remixing is just another layer in what makes Erol Alkan unique to dance music. Unpredictable but equipped with a Midas touch - you never quite know what’s coming but you can count on it to be special, a quality shared between both his DJ sets and his production work. Erol Alkan is a dance music artist with an alternative sensibility, a psychedelic approach and a punk outlook - what makes him stand apart in dance music is what makes him one of the genre’s most enduring and influential artists.

‘Reworks Volume 1’ looks back on over a decade of realigning other artists, including his classic versions of Justice’s ‘Waters Of Nazareth’, Connan Mockasin’s ‘Forever Dolphin Love’ and Death From Above 1979’s ‘Romantic Rights’, remixes that have added new perspective and dimensions to the originals, at times performing alchemy, turning rock into dance music on reworks for Franz Ferdinand, Interpol and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and he’s just as comfortable taking on fellow dance music producers like Lindstrøm, Daft Punk and Hot Chip - a connection which lead to the classic rework of ‘Boy From School’.

The double CD edition brings together 20 reworks across two CDs and comes with a booklet which includes an exclusive interview with Erol Alkan.

The outcome is brilliant, you’ve got to hear this one.

Dick Essilfie-Bondzie was all ready for his 90th birthday party when the Covid pandemic hit - The legendary producer, businessman and founder of Ghana's mighty Essiebons label had invited all his family and friends to the event and it was the disappointment at having to postpone that prompted Analog Africa founder Samy Ben Redjeb to propose a new compilation celebrating his contributions to the world of West African music

For most of the 1970s Essilfie- Bondzie's Dix and Essiebons labels were synonymous with the best in modern highlife, and his roster was a who's-who of highlife legends. C.K. Mann, Gyedu Blay Ambolley, Kofi Papa Yankson, Ernest Honny, Rob 'Roy' Raindorf and Ebo Taylor all released some of their greatest music under the Essiebons banner.Yet Essilfie- Bondzie had been destined for a very different career. Born in Apam and raised in Accra, he was sent to business school in London at the age of 20, and returned to the security of a government job in Ghana. But his passion for music, inspired by the sounds of Accra's highlife scene, had never left him, and in 1967 he figured out a way of combining music and business by opening West Africa's first record pressing plant. The venture, a partnership with the Philips label, was a huge success, attracting business from all over the continent. By the early 1970s Essilfie-Bondzie had left his government job to concentrate on his labels, and by the mid-seventies he was on a hot streak injecting album after album of restless highlife into the bloodstream of the Ghanaian music scene.Essiebons Special features a selection of obscure workouts from some of the label's heaviest hitters. But in the course of digitising his vast archive of master tapes, Essilfie-Bondzie found a number of Afrobeat and Instrumental maszterpieces tracks from the label's mid-70s golden age that, for one reason or another, had never been released. Those songs are included here for the first time.Sadly Essilfie-Bondzie passed away before the compilation was finished. But his legacy lives on in the extraordinary music that he gave to the world in his lifetime

In the past they have done some mega well loved Alternative Funk compilations which got the label off to a fine start and now they dig into an array of cult cassette releases to bring us treasure from Audiologie N-4 - The Independant Psychedelic Trip and Audiologie 5 et 6 - Ethniques Urbaines. This is music from the avant-garde and post punk scenes that draws on wave, spoken word, dark dub and industrial for its eerie yet alluring charms, all with a real edge. Ethnic, idiosyncratic and psyched out, this is another great overview.

European Primitive Guitar spans works directly influenced by and responding to Fahey’s approach to composition, alongside works by artists that arrived at similar conclusions independently. The music is, at once, both starkly traditional and contemporary. This is no more evident than with the opening song on the compilation, Spanish guitarist Albert Giménez’s 1982 composition Conte Xinès. The song draws on numerous idioms of music - flamenco, jazz, ambient music, and guitar soli - within its shimmering arpeggios, culminating as a decidedly Spanish music that has collected the ephemera of the guitar’s travels before returning home. The compilation also explores wider ideas around experimentalism happening in Europe during the time of this anthology. German composer Hans Reichel not only developed new ways of playing the instrument, but also new ways of building guitars - pushing the boundary of what a guitar could be and how it could sound.

Throughout the years, he masterfully evolved his style across various musical genres, ranging from Dub and Hip Hop to House, until he ultimately solidified his position as one of the pioneering forces behind Jungle and Drum and Bass. Fate played a remarkable role in Fabio's extraordinary musical journey. Serendipitously, he landed a pivotal spot on the pirate radio station Phase One, all thanks to a connection through a close friend. This opportunity allowed Fabio to showcase his raw talent and hone his early skills. As destiny continued to guide him, Fabio formed a powerful partnership with Grooverider, and together, they soared to fame, headlining numerous major outdoor raves and orbital M25 parties during the late '80s acid house boom. The duo's magnetic presence and innovative sound captivated audiences, setting them apart as trailblazers in the electronic music scene.

As club culture blossomed, Fabio and Grooverider became the distinguished residents at the iconic club night RAGE, hosted at Heaven in the heart of London. Their influence was immense, as they were credited with moulding the early Jungle sound and orchestrating the world's first-ever weekly Jungle night. Fabio's unwavering passion and dedication to music have not only left an indelible mark on the industry but have also inspired countless aspiring artists. His boundless creativity and willingness to push the boundaries continue to shape the ever-evolving landscape of electronic music, solidifying his status as a true pioneer and a living legend.

After the Jungle scene declined and underwent a distinct shift in sound and style, Fabio took the initiative to establish London's first dedicated soulful deep Drum and Bass night, known as Speed. Week after week, Fabio shared the decks with LTJ Bukem, and their skillful sets eventually garnered immense popularity, drawing in not only junglists but also celebrities, club kids, record label A&R representatives, and the who's who of the West End at that time. When the curtain fell on Speed Fabio's legacy continued to flourish with the inception of his legendary Swerve weekly residency at The Velvet Rooms, which later relocated to the iconic club, The End. The influence of Swerve was profound, serving as a catalyst for the creation of influential labels like Hospital Records, Tony Coleman (also known as London Elektricity) became a regular attendee, further contributing to the scene's growth and innovation.

The term 'Liquid', was born out of Fabio's deep admiration and support for his protégé, the talented Northern Irish producer and DJ, Dominick Martin, famously known as Calibre. This inspiration led to the creation of his acclaimed 14-year radio show on BBC Radio 1, 'The Liquid Funk Show', which drew from Calibre's masterful productions that Fabio likened to "liquid gold" for the ears. Through this show, Fabio played a crucial role in breaking numerous iconic records, and artists such as Chase & Status, High Contrast, and many many more.

Now, 'Generation Liquid' takes the baton from the legacy of Speed, Swerve, and 'The Liquid Funk show', capturing the essence of the era and the soulful, deeper music that Fabio has championed throughout his illustrious career. This meticulously curated collection celebrates records that embody the spirit of soulful D&B, making it a must-have for anyone who has followed Fabio's musical journey since the vibrant days of the 1990s up until now.

The compilation is a treasure trove, featuring contemporary classics, late-night rollers, iconic remixes, and timeless Fabio originals. The roster of producers on 'Generation Liquid' is stellar, boasting names like Calibre, Alix Perez, High Contrast, MJ Cole, Chase & Status, and many others. It is an essential snapshot of soulful D&B at its peak, handpicked and presented by the genre’s Godfather.

Hot on the heels of his well-received "Impermanence" artist album, the French techno figurehead Agoria presents one of the most diverse and meticulous sets to hit the fabric series to date. Jazz greats such as Ella Fitzgerald, Sun Ra and Tony Allen drift almost imperceptibly into and out of house and techno from the likes of Carl Craig, Cottam, and of course Agoria himself. Layers and snippets of each track are interwoven throughout the duration, making "Fabric 57" as much an orchestral composition as it is a DJ mix.

                                                                                                                Fabric 61 - Visionquest

Visionquest are a dynamic, charismatic and unstoppable force that have quietly crept up and grasped the horns of dance music in 2011. Comprising of Seth Troxler, Lee Curtiss, Ryan Crosson and Shaun Reeves, four Detroit refugees who each have their solo careers in their own right, together they career through barren terrain and mystical energies in the next episode of the Fabric mix CD series. In Native American cultures, a Visionquest is a spiritual quest associated with new beginnings and revelatory journeys. Meeting as teenagers in the collapsed city of Detroit, these four young creatives embarked on their own voyage together that has brought them to the forefront of the electronic music community. Surrounded by the explosion of techno in their home city, they each connected deeply with its heartbeat. The youngest of the pack, Seth Troxler’s stepfather was himself a DJ and they each began playing and promoting local events. Keen to etch their own mark as DJs and producers in the wider world, they eloped to Berlin and forged successful solo careers, before coming together again to form the Visionquest production collective responsible for crossover remixes such as Tracey Thorn ‘Swimming’ and Kiki ‘Good Voodoo’. In 2011 they formed the Visionquest label that houses a rising circle of talent such as Footprintz, Laura Jones, Tale Of Us and the biggest track of the year from Benoit & Sergio ‘Walk and Talk’.

The meditative ‘Wasteland’ from Tin Man commences this almost supernatural journey, urging you to relax and sit back for the ride. Throughout the subsequent seventy minutes, Visionquest sweep gently from light atmospherics through into warm grooves and hypnotic basslines, embodying a spellbinding sound that seems suspended in time. The close circle from their early days such as Konrad Black and Toronto’s My Favorite Robot are represented in the mix as well as early heroes such as Green Velvet and Carl Craig. Iconic records such as the Cassius ‘The Sound Of Violence’ and this year’s anthemic Aquarius Heaven ‘Can’t Buy Love’ are sandwiched between esoteric jewels. The end spirals deeper into Visionquest’s dreams and pop infused hallucinations as the auras of the young Montreal duo Footprintz merge with Italian duo Tale Of Us. The playful close on Wildcookie’s ‘The Song With No Ending’ is an archetypal Visionquest twist as they bow out in style.

                                                                                                                  Fabric 70 - Apollonia

Apollonia - Parisian trio, Dan Ghenacia, Dyed Soundorom and Shonky - mix the next instalment of the acclaimed fabric compilation series: fabric 70.

Vibe brothers in the studio, DJ booth and life, Apollonia have cultivated a creative synergy that sees them connect and work as one artist. Seamlessly weaving through house and techno, their sets are a hypnotic experience; three different minds, bodies and souls intuitively working together, focusing on their shared musical passion: grooves to make your body move.

Apollonia formed officially in 2012, although the trio have been friends and working together for more than a decade. Originally meeting at Ghenacia’s revered Parisian Sunday morning afterhours, ‘Kwality’, held on a boat in Paris, Dyed and Shonky released their first EPs on Ghenacia’s former imprint, Freak n’ Chic, a label which encouraged new talent to grow and reach from the echelons on France. After the label’s demise in 2011, the logical progression for the Parisians was to start a joint musical venture, and here Apollonia began - both the band aspect and as a record label, to release their own productions and those of carefully chosen contemporaries.

It’s an unmistakable energy Apollonia have brought to creating fabric 70, which was completed over an intense six-week lock down period in the trio’s Berlin studio earlier this year.

The mix includes fresh cuts from the likes of The Mole on his new Maybe Tomorrow imprint, Dyed Soundorom’s buzzing re-rub of Daze Maxim’s ‘Farbfilm’ (a recent addition to the Apollonia catalogue), two new Apollonia releases from the boys themselves, made especially for the mix - ‘Trinidad’ - smooth deep house that incorporates the male spoken word and ‘Visa Americain’, a swirling, trippy excursion packed full of multi-layered drums and fizzy sonic effects, both due out on Apollonia later this year.

Reaching back to the 1990s, the atmospheric pads of Nail’s ‘I’ve Been There’ is included from 1997, the uplifting summery grooves of Mood 2 Swing feat. John Ciafone ‘Ohh’ from 1996 and Callisto’s ‘Need Ur Love’ – a track close to the hearts of Dan, Dyed and Shonky - concludes the mix, standing as a solemn homage to the DJ/producer who sadly recently passed.

It proved a challenge to license, but they finally pulled it off, and what’s more hold plans to re-press it on the label later this year. True to Apollonia form, fabric 70 is also a work with its share of twists and turns - the deftly talented trio knowing pleasure comes from contrasts and thus the energy levels are constantly manipulated up and down with masterful precision - the energy and intensity of their live performances injected into the mix. His highly textural aesthetic translates into an ethos that looks to introduce a more open musical palette without losing sight of its past. His mix supports 10 exclusives or unreleased tracks, including 2 from himself and another from his rare pop-up alias Barakas. Employing the multi-instrumental arrangements of his own work in this 74 minutes of house, techno, electronica and breakbeat, each track exudes character and allows animated melodies to wander and develop, all the while grounded by an acute sense of harmonic progression and rhythmic precision.

A superb compilation and a fascinating timeline of Bonobo's considerable influences with the dance floor as the focus.

The duo’s grasp of house music history is showcased as they create a slick and nostalgic journey through the genre’s hidden gems – making it fabric’s most challenging licensing project to date, with much of the music available digitally for the first time. Louis and Ben see the project as an ode to those underappreciated tunes that made a huge impact on them. Their exclusive ‘Higher Elevation’ blends in with the rest as an everlasting house cut with its delicate dreamy keys, fluffy bass and a groovy loop. The highlight-heavy comp boasts a personable album cover shot in Egypt, adding an extra layer of individuality to this stand out release.

Danilo Plessow, known best for his work as Motor City Drum Ensemble, inserts statements from friends about the meaning of the music to people in these times, reaching globally for inspiration. He plays with a range of eras, locations and genres with an emphasis on instrumentation. The double vinyl format with download card features eleven full length tracks taken from the compilation. It highlights the rarer cuts across the 70s, 80s and 90s many of which have never before been digitally released. It includes ‘Nightfall’ – Danilo’s exclusive composition with jazz instrumentalists Francesco Geminiani and Peter Schlamb and ‘Taxi Mutant’ by Cabaret Voltaire that has been cut to vinyl for the first time here.

Her forward-thinking style of production and mixing that relies on both genres’ analogue sounds has helped to inform a wildly popular subset of selectors that prefer their sonics hard-edged, hypnotic, and wildly exhilarating. Her fabric mix comp follows these rules – taking in techno, electro and industrial-edged electronica, from the early 90s like D-Breeze’s Crazy For Love with its cool Autechre remix to hot producers on the scene like Magda Rot’s exclusive ‘Alter Simus’. Her 2023 touring covers the worldwide festival circuit. Press shots for this campaign were directed, styled and shot by Riya Hollings with the release’s dark futurism perfectly captured and perfect for music, fashion, and lifestyle press.

Maribou State’s recent sell-out tours across UK, USA and Europe came off the back of 2018’s longplayer ‘Kingdom of Colour’ that hit no.25 on the UK album charts. The mix includes 2 exclusive Maribou State tracks and a Maribou State remix of Radiohead’s Reckoner. It reflects the hours spent before heading to the club; drinks at a friend’s house, the journey into London and the anticipation in the build-up beforehand. They captured and interwove audio field recordings of themselves re-taking the journey to and from the club to reinforce their story

Their mix for fabric - that coincides with a fast-moving ticket selling date at the club the weekend of its release - draws on the psychedelic hooks of 1980s soundtracks and modern dance music’s emphasis on sound design to create a distinctive and immensely powerful compilation. Eleven exclusive tracks grace the eighteen track comp – tunes all matched by the melodic genre and written by friends of the Fognini brothers. The standout track of the mix is the closing number – a transcendent collaborative effort between Mind Against and young innovator Dyzen.

Born and raised in Ecuador, Nicola Cruz has found his own unique way to tap into Latin America’s illustrious musical past to create something utterly contemporary.

Cruz’s ‘fabric presents’ shows awareness of the power of ancestral cosmology over art and music whilst driving fiercely towards the strange, experimental, and unexpected of underground electronica. From here he curates the first of the fabric mixes with strong roots in South America.

Opening on the powerfully stabbing ‘Everything Falls Into Place’ from MMM (Errorsmith & Fiedel), the mix sweeps through bass, breaks, techno, analogue-glitch, all the way to the folky Portuguese lyrics of ‘Mensagem Enviada’ from Rico Jorge.

Nick León, Verraco, Veruna, machìna and Marcela Días Sindaco - whose sultry vocals also weave through Cruz’s own ‘Contato’ - are a few of the artists who have provided exclusives that count towards the fourteen unheard tracks on an essential delivery to the fabric series.

The 21 track compilation was mixed from all-vinyl in their log cabin home and studio in the woods of New Hampshire, taking in cuts that span house, bassline, UK hardcore, and trance. It's includes exclusive tracks from both Octo Octa - 'River' – a trancey and euphoric house classic, and Eris - 'Reactiv-8' – an electro selection with Eris’s own vocals, as well as many rare 90s house gems previously limited to the collections of vinyl-heads and now available for download. Released alongside the comp is a double vinyl product with download code featuring ten full length tracks from the mix.

Inspired by cold, dark London nights, but celebrating the rich diversity of talent amongst the UK scene the mix takes in dubstep, dnb, techno and the experimental end of electronica. It features spoken word from Benjamin Zephaniah, Foremost Poets and the poetic lyrics of For Those I Love’s ‘I Have A Love’, making this a bold, upbeat, emotionally-moving, post-lockdown dancefloor comp.

Rochdale-via-Manchester-via-Leeds' electronic troubadour Sockethead There's even an appearance from Rochdale-via-Manchester-via-Leeds' electronic troubadour Sockethead, whose self-reflective moments of synthesized ambi-noize, self-induced isolation and heart-spilling honestly were captured brilliantly on an LP for Youth earlier in the year.

BBC Radio 1’s Breakthrough Artist Of The Year for 2021, TSHA’s DJ sets bring a bright future-faced energy, while also respecting vintage dancefloor sounds and a classic raver spirit.

It’s a feeling she’s transported into creating her ‘fabric presents’ work that spans rave, ‘90s dance, house, techno, UKG, soul, grime, disco and bass music and includes her own exclusive ‘BOYZ’.

It was the idea of acid house (see smiley artwork) and the idea of old skool rave culture plus the ethos around peace and love that inspired TSHA.

Just as Bonobo gave her track ‘Sacred’ a platform on his fabric compilation so she introduces up-andcoming artists to her mix. They all echo the distinctly British club culture sound she wants to pay tribute to with this work.

Deep, elegant and swelling, the mix transcends listeners to otherworldly soundscapes with a fantastically diverse ambience - at times sunny and bright, other times wild and mystifying, and always keeping a psychedelic and cinematic feel throughout. Featuring the off-beat spontaneity of dOP, the Latin infused bounce of Matias Aguayo, the percussive retreats of Bodycode - and plenty of hidden gems in-between - "Fabric51" is a joy of a listen, a daydream-fuelling hideaway where each track is crammed with as many soul-fuelled moments and intricate charms as the next.

With over 20 years of DJing and more than 20,000 records in his vinyl collection, one of the world’s most talented house heroes, DJ Sneak, lends his tune selection, deck wizardry and pure love of house music to fabric 62. Born Carlos Sosa in Puerto Rico, Sneak was raised to the rhythms of salsa music, before moving to Chicago in 1983, and becoming captivated by the sounds of jazz, funk, soul, disco and of course house music. Originally a graffiti artist, Sneak soon became involved in selling music, starting his own label Defiant and working in the city’s infamous Gramophone record store, where he met artists and industry players, all the while developing his unmistakable jacking style. Releases on house music institutions such as Strictly Rhythm, Classic and Relief, as well as his burgeoning DJ reputation, led to Sneak’s international career blossoming in the 90s and early 00s, with tracks such as ‘You Can’t Hide From Your Bud’ and ‘Fix My Sink’ widely attributed classic status. Now heading up three of his own labels (Magnetic, Oomph and Sneak’s Classics), Sneak remains as relevant as ever, with artists from Ricardo Villalobos to Riva Starr queuing up to DJ and produce in collaboration with the house music legend.

Sneak’s mix is ripe with carefully selected contemporary house nuggets with echoes of Chicago and the jacking house sound he loves, drizzled with elements of techno and dusted with overtones of big band swing, mixed to perfection. Sneak performed and recorded the mix live without the use of any computers, taking a transatlantic trip to bring together bumping Chicago grooves with muscular European techno.

One of Freq Nasty's recent collaborations was with Switch and Santogold on "Creator", so he's obviously not got stuck in a strictly nu-skool breaks rut. Instead he's spiced up his sound (and this mix) with electro and dubstep (along with hip hop and dub) to keep things fresh. So as well as Madox, Backdraft, The Beat Monkeys and Tayo, this CD includes tracks by ZTT, Buraka Som Sistema, Radioclit, TRG, Lee 'Scratch' Perry Vs. The Moody Boyz and KRS One.

Toddla T's party-rocking sets are the stuff of legend, a genre-bending, fast-paced style propped up by Toddla's ongoing love affair with dancehall and ably assisted by his hype-chief MC Serocee who features alongside Toddla on "Fabriclive 47". This wiry 24 year old Sheffield lad has bags of personality whatever side of the decks he's on, a trait which effortlessly transmits into his DJ sets. This mix is unapologetically loud, brash but most of all fun. Toddla bounces through styles in the blink of an eye, from the bashy dancehall re-lick of Duffy's "Stepping Stone" to the brief blaze of firing drum & bass from Clipz to his Fish Go Deep / Geeneus / Zinc medley to slices of funky through to some exclusive slabs of dubstep, then onto grime and 2-step – it's breathless, it's reckless and it's utterly brilliant.

Fabriclive 53 - Drop The Lime

Pigeonholes are gracefully obliterated, and Drop The Lime's signature all-in-the-box DJing style encompassed, on the thrilling, adventurous "Fabriclive 53". As with all DTL mixes, the most unlikely beats and artists suddenly make perfect sense alongside one another: the raw 303s of Maurice introduce acid to Untold's future bump, Drop The Lime's own housey summer hit "Sex Sax" steps and twirls to the swing of Bill Haley & His Comets, and the glittery synth pop of Little Jinder fades into the melodic grace of Reso's dubbed-out ambience. Filled with teasings of Drop The Lime's newest work, and of course his unmistakable vocals, overall the mix is every bit as rare and passionate - and unpredictable - as the charismatic artist himself.

Looking back on the myriad of ways that the genre now known quite loosely as ‘bass music’ has mutated, one of the key figures in its evolution would have to be Bristol’s Rob Ellis, better known simply as Pinch. His fascination with what the outer limits of the dub sound can achieve has made him a distinct figure within the fluid group of like-minded dubstep musicians that defined the so-called Bristol sound.

In 2003, a Kode9 set became the stepping-stone that was his initial contact with dubstep at London’s seminal FWD>>. This inspired him to start the first pure dubstep night outside of FWD>>, Subloaded, in his hometown of Bristol. With the city’s love of dub and long musical lineage, plus Pinch’s dedication to the importance of the actual sound, it quickly formed a dedicated community and became a yardstick by which other nascent events were measured. This had all been driven by a key moment in his own musical evolution which as he explains, “I lost interest in D&B and started buying minimal Basic Channel style techno, garage, grime and electronica instead - trying to mix them up together,” pre-empting the dominant sound of 4/4 dub-techno embraced by today’s crop of young producers, like Hessle Audio, who regularly cite the Bristol sound as a big influence.

His Fabriclive offering comes hot on the heels of mixes from Pearson Sound and an artist with whom he’s just recently released a collaborative album on Honest Jon’s, Shackleton. These are all producers who work in a similar vein, that is, impeccable attention to sound detail, continual experimentation with rhythm whilst always maintaining a definitive ‘sound’ which can be traced throughout all their productions.

"I am a supporter of the sound of vinyl and the cultural associations I make with this format so it was important to me - even if I do ultimately end up abandoning my beloved format one day - to stick by my guns and record the mix like this. I also made the whole mix start and finish in the same spot - meaning that the entire DJ mix can work as a loop if you put it on repeat. I really like the idea of certain kinds of music existing in its own infinite context and setting up the mix to loop like that was playing entirely into that idea." - Pinch

With a back catalogue that includes some of the biggest club hits of the past ten years, including tracks from Skream, Benga, Redlight and Jess Mills, and a reputation for throwing the biggest parties around, Digital Soundboy’s position in dance history is assured. Today the label’s roster of Shy FX, Breakage, B.Traits, Youngman, Dismantle and Stamina MC are all successful artists in their own right, but first and foremost Digital Soundboy remains a family, one that plays, parties and produces together and together continues to break new ground.

The first officially released Digital Soundboy mix, 'Fabriclive 63' perfectly captures the carnival spirit of the label and its parties. From drum n’ bass to dubstep, dancehall to garage, via excursions into house and beyond 'Fabriclive 63' showcases the Digital Soundboy crew’s ability to bring together myriad genres and styles in the freshest way possible and create a pure party-starting selection. Mixed by Shy FX, B.Traits and Breakage, each separately choosing their favourite tracks before working on the mix together in the Digital Soundboy studio, 'Fabriclive 63' features a mix of exclusive dubs and upcoming releases from the Digital Soundboy family; tracks such as Zed Bias’ ‘Heavy Water Riddim’ and Dismantle’s ‘Warp’, classic anthems like Shy FX’s ‘Original Nuttah’, and the unexpected such as MANDY vs Booka Shade ‘Body Language’. An inspired selection that will put a smile on many a face and a bounce in your step, 'Fabriclive 63' ducks and weaves its way across the musical spectrum, and like the label itself, refuses to be pigeonholed.

There are DJs that are heavily tied to styles, people who go on to become figures synonymous with a certain sound or a particular approach to mixing; and then there are DJ’s DJs - a different breed of people who manage to make the whole process of blending records from disparate genres look (and sound) seamless. Often, it’s not just about beat matching perfectly, it’s as much about capturing a mood and evolving it through your record selections as it is locking on to a consistent rhythm and that’s something that Streatham bred DJ, Steve Bishop, has proven himself to be mightily adept at over the years. As much as his sets under the Oneman moniker may have started turning heads by melding old school UK garage with DMZ style dubstep, he’s proven through his regular presence on London institution Rinse FM that he can do so much more than just marry classics with current beats.

Oneman has rightly become an essential part of the station’s roster, broadcasting his own agenda for two hours every Sunday night. He’s already known for his flawless mixing, his impeccable selection and his old meets new school mergers - that’s why he’s already a lot of people’s favourite DJ - but his FABRICLIVE mix manages to cement all of the above in an incredibly understated way. The selection bounds through choice cuts from the last couple of years by Joy Orbison, Fis-T, SBTRKT, Grievous Angel and Mosca to current productions from Pearson Sound, Lando Kal, Teeth and Thefft, all the time peppered by garage classics from Nu Birth, Steve Gurley, Tuff Jam and Youngstar.

A proper UKG / future beats set that really makes you feel like dancing. 24 tracks mixed to perfection, while losing none of the 'live club' edge.

In a world where illegal downloads, cracked software and sync buttons are helping to create swarms of young DJs with bottomless libraries of digital music they’re vaguely familiar with, you might question the role and relevance of the specialist DJ in today’s musical landscape. Not everyone possesses the talent, care and breadth of taste required to project their personality through other people’s records, or to create narratives which transcend dancefloors; Ben UFO is someone who does. Over the years Ben has increased in confidence and proficiency, and in devoting himself to the pursuit of highlighting shared characteristics of 2-step garage, dubstep, classic house and techno, he has learned to expertly navigate and bridge tempos and genres in as natural a fashion as possible, allowing tracks from disparate areas to co-exist and function comfortably alongside one another to form a unique and well-defined aesthetic.

In 2007, after finishing university, alongside David Kennedy (Pearson Sound) and Kevin McAuley (Pangaea), he started Hessle Audio. The label was formed with the idea of providing a platform for the release of Pangaea and Pearson Sound’s own records, but its scope quickly expanded, resulting in the release of genre-defying records by Objekt, Untold, Cosmin TRG, James Blake, Blawan and more. In May 2009 they started their residency at Fabric, which has been ongoing ever since. The club night reflects what they do as a record label and as DJs, showcasing expansive, varied lineups and drawing connections between artists as diverse as Kassem Mosse, Kode 9, Livity Sound and Randall.

The primary purpose of this Fabriclive release is to represent exactly what Ben does as a DJ, and to give him the opportunity to showcase the different aspects of the music that he stands for. Accordingly, it is not a straightforward mix of house, bass music or techno; neither is it filled with exclusives or unreleased material. It is an indicator of where we are at and where we have come from, and a statement of intent. It is a considered and highly textured mix consisting of 28 tracks and traversing multiple styles.

Emerging from the moody introversion of Mix Mup’s “Before (Dub),” the mix starts in earnest with an aggressively distorted cut from Delroy Edwards, which bleeds into the off-kilter rhythms and sub-bass intensity of an exclusive from Pev & Kowton. From there we’re thrown into the bizarre future-tribal world of DJ Sotofett remixing Tim ‘Love’ Lee’s “The Tortoise” and onwards through tracks and decades, as Chicago Skyway’s “It’s OK” combines with K-Hand, Fluxion, Jam City, Pearson Sound and Mr. Fingers. There are truly inspired transitions here: the acid tones of “Zug Island” by Kyle Hall & Kero drip languidly over Shackleton vs Kasai Allstars’ “Mukuba Special”; the shattered percussion of A Made Up Sound’s “Malfunction” is pulled into line by the loop-driven techno of Grain’s “Untitled”; the dissonant bassline drone of Pangaea’s “Release” swallows up and consumes whole the kick-drum barrage which defines Blawan’s “And Both His Sons.”

With Hessle Audio releases represented heavily alongside labels such as L.I.E.S., Hinge Finger, Night Slugs, Hemlock and Eglo, there are clear indications of a tightly-knit community working collectively to push things forward. Ben is central to this movement, and with this mix he manages to communicate not just who he is and what he does, but ultimately where we are at.

In true maverick style, Fake Blood, AKA Theo Keating, has forged his own path as a hard-hitting, multi-genre artist with a cult following like no other. He caught the dance music bug from an early age, developing a love of house and techno from listening to pirate stations such as LWR and Kiss. Before long acid house, rare groove, hip hop and early electro seeped in too, shaping the musical melting pot that informs his distinctive sound. Through his various projects and mysterious aliases - Wiseguys to Touché, The Black Ghosts to Fake Blood - he’s consistently proved himself to be one of the UK’s most authentic and exciting producer exports. Over the last six years Fake Blood’s musical career has continued to grow. Having made a huge impact with hits like ‘Mars’ and ‘I Think I Like It’, he then turned his energy to releasing the critically acclaimed debut album ‘Cells’ last year. Having played the world over, from Paris to Tokyo via Sydney and New York, Fake Blood also knows a thing or two when it comes to manipulating a packed dancefloor into a sweaty frenzy; a skill he honed at London’s Fabric.

"My first visit to Fabric was probably not long after it opened…then I got to play there, and used to play monthly. I always loved it, no matter which room. I've always enjoyed the way that room one is not really that DJ-focused. You're there, only a few feet from the dancefloor, but not up on a pedestal. This means people just get on with dancing rather than getting distracted by some guy at a table. It's like turning the TV off in a room full of people; they'll all turn and start talking to one another." – Fake Blood

Inspired by the freedom playing at Fabric offers, Fake Blood’s 'Fabriclive 69' mix is similar to a set you would expect to hear him play at the club. But true to form, Fake Blood goes against type, concentrating not just on upfront exclusives for the sake of it but weaving in true personal favourites that conjure warm memories of buying house records and partying hard. Expect to hear classics ‘Jam The Mace’ by House Syndicate alongside new kid on the block Happa, a Fake Blood remix of The Black Ghosts ‘Forgetfulness’ and music from his own record label Blood Music. Never one to sit still for too long, Fake Blood’s 'Fabriclive 69' is an effortless past, present and future musical lesson that just like Keating, will stand up to the test of time.

"For 'Fabriclive 69' I went for combinations and blends that seemed a little odd on paper, but to me worked really well sonically - to keep it surprising rather than too linear or working towards some kind of crescendo. It's more about regular moments throughout than building to the last tune." - Fake Blood

With the last few years having inarguably paid witness to the most transitional, and potentially divisive period in the history of the UK's much fawned-over hardcore continuum, Kevin McAuley has become a voice synonymous with a singular brand of off-kilter, sub-heavy dance music. Under the name Pangaea, he has released on some of the most reputable labels to emerge in recent times, as well as the Hessle Audio imprint that he helms alongside long-time friends, and fellow FABRICLIVE contributors, Pearson Sound and Ben UFO. As a trio they've been at the forefront of a scene that's accelerated at an unprecedented rate as of late, making their enviable ability to stay ahead of the curve all the more impressive with a roster that boasts the indisputable talents of James Blake, Peverelist, Blawan and more.

Having grown up in a rural area of the South West of England, it was a move to Leeds that was to see McAuley's early interest in music develop into something far more substantial, becoming engrossed in the emergent sounds of dubstep and co-founding the city's first ever night to be dedicated to the genre.

In 2007 he helped establish the Hessle Audio label as a means with which to draw together original and boundary-pushing music that wasn't being represented elsewhere, and after appearing as the imprint's sophomore release he has gone on to craft eight more critically acclaimed EPs, including appearances for the esteemed Hotflush and Hemlock Recordings, as well as his own more recent Hadal series.

It's here, four years after his first appearance in fabric's third room, that he steps up to deliver a mix that's as visceral as we've come to expect from the prodigious youngster, and one that exemplifies the fiercely unique approach he's taken towards his work thus far.

With his productions having traditionally shared an affiliation with the darker end of the sonic spectrum, it comes as no surprise to find the confrontational palettes of Psyk and Shifted sitting alongside the gauzy textures of Lee Gamble and distressed junglism of Pev & Kowton, over the course of a compelling 76 minutes

                                                                                                                                                        Various Artists

                                                                                                                                                        Fabriclive 74 - Jack Beats

It’s fair to say that Jack Beats have a longstanding relationship with fabric, and it’s one that’s infiltrated a long and hugely successful career for the duo, perhaps better known as Niall Dailly and Ben Geffin. Even before they formed - just as the blog scene exploded, taking the pair on a heady ride of fidget house and bass-heavy beats - Dailly and Geffin were winning accolades through their former lives as DJ Plus One of the Scratch Perverts and Beni G of The Mixologists respectively. Widely recognized as some of the most technically gifted DJs around - Dailly winning the DMC World Championships as proof - Jack Beats have refused to stand still, their sound remaining one step ahead of the curve, and with one resident’s foot firmly placed in fabric throughout. With Niall in Scotland and Ben in London, their stories are the same as any other 90s kid: an insatiable appetite for a melting-pot of music, spearheaded by the early rave scene, ultimately led them both to turntablism. Using DJ competitions to showcase their skills and fuel bookings, it wasn’t long before Dailly and Geffin became Jack Beats, initially throwing themselves into the blog culture ’du jour’: remixing. Tackling pop behemoths from Beyoncé to Example with their own very unique brand of bouncy bass, Jack Beats have come a long way since, releasing on Cheap Thrills and Sony / Colombia, before settling at their current home, Skrillex’s OWSLA. It’s been a jam-packed ride, and one that Jack Beats only see continuing as they give you just a taste of what to expect in 2014 with their FABRICLIVE 74 MIX.

As Jack Beats attest, FABRICLIVE 74 is a 70 minute snapshot of their 2014 sonic landscape. Weaving from the freshest producers such as Taiku & Nulight featuring AC Slater ‘Doing It’ and Luxury ‘J.A.W.S.’ through to Duke Dumont on ‘Street Walker’, Jack Beats always keep the energy high and the pace fast with big, crunchy basslines, peppered through with recent and upfront tracks. There aren’t many DJs who can swing from the house leanings of Breach and Dusky through to HARD’s Destructo, but Jack Beats do it with ease, gluing the mix together with their own takes on Rudimental, A-Trak and Circus boss, Flux Pavilion, as well as their own upfront cuts on mix opener ‘Beatbox’ and ‘Ill Shit’. Technically skilled with an undeniable ear for what works, Jack Beats prove time and time again why they consistently remain a major player in dance music, and one of our strongest ever UK music exports.
