Various Artists

Drive-Thru Records

An excellently priced four CD boxed set from Drive-Thru records that gathers together the early work of four bands that have gone on to make a real name for themselves on the emo / hardcore /pop punk scene. Included is New York's "The Movielife Has A Gambling Problem" which marked a slicker, poppier side of the band, while still keeping a firm grip on their punk and hardcore roots. The Starting Line "With Hopes Of Staring Over" five tracks of nifty guitar hooks and catchy singalong choruses. California's Finch debut mini album "Falling Into Place" is best described as a cross between Jimmy Eat World and Glassjaw. Energetic, melodic, aggressive and fresh. New Found Glory's seven track mini album of movie cover songs complete's the package.

    Senses Fail

    From The Depth Of Dreams

Using the power of hardcore allied to pop-melodies Senses Fail combine both to great effect. It's Finch / Deftones style stuff but far poppier - and younger, essentially what we have here is pop-hardcore. An eight track mini album with enhanced CD video footage also featuring interviews and photos. It's another whopper on the Drive-Thru Label.

      The Movielife

Forty Hour Train Back To Penn

Total stormer of an album from New York's The Movielife who are fast becoming one of the best bands on the heavier side of the emocore scene. Another impeccable Drive-Thru band too, the endless touring has paid dividens because this is tight as a gnat's ass and really rocks.

        Home Grown

        Kings Of Pop

I love the energy of Home Grown and "Kings Of Pop" is another classy release on the excellent Drive-Thru label, it's typical of the brash and direct style of Southern California power pop. Although this is their most thoughtful and fully realized album to date it doesn't lose the high-energy and irreverence that has always characterized their best work. There's emocore songs like "You're Not Alone" that contrasts with the punk pop of tracks like "I Love You Not." It shouldn't work, but it does. Wonderfully.
