Peppermint Soldier

West Lothian electronica supergroup Räven Musen are back with 'Peppermint Soldier', their first full length album.

Räven Musen are Steven Anderson (Letters From Mouse) and Frazer Brown (Dohnavùr). Following on from 2020's debut EP, 'Secrets of Snow Diving', Steven and Fra bring you Peppermint Soldier to mark WFR's second birthday, and the label's 50th release.

Peppermint Soldier focuses on both artist's individual strengths, with Steven's affinity for cloudy melodies and twinkling modular electronics, and Frazer's trademark dusty grooves and weathered hook lines. These strengths are particularly evident in the lo-fi euphoria of "Editare Rosie", the frantic paranoia of "3300 War', and the marriage of crunchy loops and woozy synth in 'The Hill'.

There's something for everyone within Peppermint Soldier, and the album signifies the growth of Steven and Fra as producers (their popularity as Letters From Mouse and Dohnavùr respectively is testament to this), and also highlights the rapid ascension of Werra Foxma since their inception in June of 2020.

    Sulk Rooms

    Viewers

With ‘Viewers’, Thomas Ragsdale’s Sulk Rooms moniker maps a journey through a sinking city landscape riddled with themes of desolate paranoia, surveillance and skin-crawling atmospherics.

The concept of screens, lenses and our eyes being observational ‘Viewers’ invites us to peer into the album’s foreboding and airless sound environment giving an elevated sense of weightlessness and disorientation.

‘Viewers’ is designed to take you through a network of rooms and passages filled with drones, smoke and strobes soundtracked by the savage resonating dub techno chords in ‘Televisions’, which rip and tear like teeth, and to escape from the hiss and hum occupied gloominess of ‘The Thin Man’.

However, it’s not all starkness and existential doom and there are a few glimmers of hope and optimism. In ‘Transmissions’ the lean-over-the-edge countdown is weighted firmly by a barely-there glowering melody eventually succumbing to the grieving ambience of ‘Empty Theatre’, which aches and cries out with resilient spirit. It’s finally a moment to catch your breath, but the red velvet stage curtains suddenly close and the only thing left is the loneliest of alarms.

      The Metamorph

      Return To Splendour

Following up from his successful self released Red Tape album, Harlech based producer Gavin Brick, aka The Metamorph, has outdone himself with 'Return To Splendour', his first release for Werra Foxma Records, and the label's first ever pressed vinyl release. 'The title felt like it had the right amount of grandeur without being grandiose - rather like the music' explains Gavin, who creates his amazing soundscapes in his spectacular Neon Nebula Studio, with all parts played by hand with no computer sequencing. Originally recorded as a session for the highly influential Magic Window radio show, hosted by Steven Anderson (Letters From Mouse), the decision was made to make it a full release on WFR. From the icy isolation of Opening Titles, to the warm piano tumbles and old world vocal samples of The Visible World, to the soaring, major key majesty of Slumber Submerged, Return To Splendour reaches the places that few beatless, ambient releases reach.

        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The Metamorph returns for some more of his wonderful, classic synth inspired sound. From the twinkling keys of 'The Visible World' or the widescreen majesty of closer 'Slumber Submerged', this is a confident and beautiful release on a wonderful new label. For fans of Vangelis, Eno or Tangerine Dream, Gavin is a talented composer and a lovely chap to boot. Superb stuff.

        Scanner

        Le Fenêtre Magique

La Fenëtre Magique is the spellbinding new album from Scanner. Showcasing his world class propensity for on-the-fly electronic improvisation, Robin Rimbaud brings his breathtaking craft to Werra Foxma. Initially recorded as a session for Steven Anderson’s last ever weekly ‘Magic Window’ radio show in August of 2021, we reached out to Robin about releasing the session as a vinyl release.

Being the true gent that he is, he agreed. ‘Blinking In Time’ is a mesmerising 30 minute journey spanning a myriad of styles, showcasing Robin’s effortless ability to bend and warp his almost-infinite sonic palette to his will. Ethereal one minute, hyper-intense the next. Despite its track length, ‘Blinking In Time’ is forever restless and evolving, with surprises at every turn. It’s a piece of music that deserves to have a short film produced to compliment it, not the other way round. Rounding off the album is the sensational ‘After Magnetism’, a blanket of scorched earth sound, with clouds of overdriven tones that envelop and entrance the listener.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A superb selection recorded for LFM's Magic Window radio that really shows the extent of Rimbaud's skills. Beautiful ambience and driving percussion perfectly brought together with skill and patience. Evocative and hypnotic.

          Electronic Music Travels

"The release of the Electronic Music Travels albums is an incredibly special moment for me in that it represents several years of friendships, collaboration, creativity and personal investment in the wonderful world of electronic music. I never imagined for a moment when I ran the first Electronic Music Open Mic (EMOM) in Manchester in early 2017 that it would lead to UK wide, European (and Australian) events, as well as a music travel book, CD compilations and a sexy vinyl release on an amazing emerging record label. All I wanted to do was have some fun with music in a space that was supportive and encouraging to everyone involved, those with ambitions plus those with no ambitions, people who enjoyed making music and wanted to test it out in a live environment. At that time there were very few places for electronic and experimental artists to meet up and play, there still aren’t enough, but at least the EMOM movement has contributed to making such spaces available.

When Electronic Music Travels (the book) was published via Werra Foxma Records in 2020 it sold out in just a few months. This was a massive surprise to me as I’ve grown so used to getting minimal interest in my art and music. I keep going because it’s in my bloodstream and I can’t help myself. It’s part of my DNA. Many of the people who bought the book were actively involved in the EMOM movement as organisers, performers and supporters. Many of those people were also mentioned in the book which gave a snapshot of grass roots electronic music making around the UK and beyond. For this reason it seemed natural to me that the money raised from the book sales should be used to fund something exciting for the community in the form of an exciting music release. A vinyl release was the obvious choice but in discussions with Frazer of Werra Foxma Records I soon appreciated the time limitations of this format. We opted for a vinyl release with complementary CD releases so we could cover as wide a range of artists as possible. The process of choosing the music to include from the many brilliant submissions was a tough one and sometimes led to some lively debates and communications. There simply wasn’t room for all the submissions to be included so we aimed to select previously unreleased material and give a sense of the amazing range of electronic and experimental music that is being made at this time. This we hoped would emulate a typical EMOM night where soundscape artists follow DJ sets, synth pop performers and modular enthusiasts. I truly believe we have achieved that great mix and that these releases represent a moment in time when fabulous music is being made and should be heard.

I’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who submitted music to these albums and to all the artists and supporters involved in the EMOM community. It’s amazing how new friendships and allegiances have been formed from the simple act of bringing people together in a live music setting. I’ve always tried to espouse the view that whatever happens this is not about one individual and what they do. It’s about what we all do to support each other and what we all bring to the table. That table is waiting for you on the stage of an EMOM night somewhere out there. Go and listen to what others are doing and let them listen to what you are doing and most of all have fun along the way. It makes our music travels so much more interesting.
