The London Dirthole Company

Modern Ist EP

The giant avalanche that is THE LONDON DIRTHOLE COMPANY is back with another slab of prime-time partisan punk noise. With a Futurist disdain and Dadaist sense of sardonic humour, the MODERN IST EP celebrates the realities of the Family Of Noise as a truly interactive social experiment. The genuinely odd bunch of protagonists that make up the bands personnel stretch the boundaries of conventional group structure and methods. A truly outsider approach that reverberates with its nebulous intensity and spirit of joy. The result is a fractious cacophony created (on this record) by four drummers, 3 guitarists a bass player and 2 different vocalists. Live the band rotate up to a dozen singers if occasion and availability conspire. The music has elements and attitudes in common with The Monks, Velvet Underground, Pussy Galore and The Fall without any direct plagiarism or imitation. These bands are but ships in the night to the Battleship Dirthole and its crew of desperate fellows. PROFESSOR THE CONFESSOR is an intimate memoir of utterances from the dark recesses of The Professor’s mind. CRYING ONIONS is a sleazy ballad of all-consuming pleasure, timeless romance, sensual purgatory, erotic possession, empty tears, disrobing and eating an onion. TOMORROW, TODAY faces up to the bleak realities of a passion consumed and the vagaries of the staring up from the gutter as you watch your former partner dance the same dance you fell for with someone else. The strapping fit and healthy London Dirthole Company pedigree on this recording; The Nuns, Pulkas, Echobelly, Headbutt, Felix Moment Power Trio, Lot Lizards, Project Dark, Headcleaner.

    London Grammar

    The Greatest Love

The Greatest Love follows the British trio’s critically acclaimed #1 selling album Californian Soil, which was released in 2021 and earned the band their second BRIT nomination for Best British Group. Arriving over a decade since the trio first entered our consciousness, the new album is a celebration; the sound of a band laying to rest the past and realising a newfound sense of freedom.

First single House embodies London Grammar’s new trajectory as frontwoman Hannah Reid delivers the uncompromising lyric: This is my place, my house, my rules. Speaking about the single Hannah said, “House is about drawing boundaries around yourself. When I hit my thirties, my mindset shifted, and I no longer felt like a victim of anything – it all felt within my power. I thought, making music should be fun, and we're gonna make that happen.”

Having first formed as teenagers at University, their seminal double-platinum selling debut If You Wait paved the way for what was to become a hugely successful career for the band, the rare longevity of which has firmly rooted London Grammar in British pop culture. Now over 10 years later, the band have sold more than 3 million albums world-wide, with two #1 selling records, 1 billion streams, an Ivor Novello and numerous BRIT Award nominations under their belts.

Yannis & The Yaw Feat. Tony Allen

      Lagos Paris London EP

In 2016, Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis was offered the opportunity of a lifetime: a two-day session working with the great drummer Tony Allen, who he admired intensely for his influential, multi-genre work with the likes of Fela Kuti, Sébastien Tellier and Jeff Mills.

Heading into a smoke-filled, ‘70s throwback studio in Paris, Yannis had expected them to make a nostalgic Afrobeat record. Yet something very different emerged. As the pair quickly established an intuitive telepathy, the music germinated from jams and loops, its varied touchpoints - rock, funk, jazz, dub and more - were complemented by a unique atmosphere of two cultures and creatives colliding, their expression liberated by making music in and for the moment itself.

Joined by Tony’s regular collaborators Vincent Taeger (percussion, marimba), Vincent Taurelle (keys) and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar) that first meeting resulted in a handful of near complete songs, which were further developed during a couple of subsequent sessions. But between scheduling issues and Covid restrictions, the recordings were never completed before Tony passed away in April 2020 at the age of 79.

Yannis felt a deep duty to complete the project, not only as a bittersweet way to honour and celebrate his friend, but also because Tony had been so eager to share these songs with the world. The result is the upcoming five-track EP, ‘Lagos Paris London’, under the Yannis & The Yaw umbrella - a project that he plans to return to in the future for further collaborations with inspiring musicians from across the globe.

‘Lagos Paris London’ EP is high-spirited, loose-grooved exuberance completed by the complex rhythms and unhurried style of the man who inspired it. It’s a communion with the past that provides an escape in the present day.

Everything Is Connected - The Best Of Blancmange 1979-2024

Celebrating 45 years of Blancmange, Everything Is Connected (Best Of) is the first collection to be curated by Neil Arthur, tastefully blending a mixture of hits and personal favourites. Originally from the UK’s post punk DIY scene, Blancmange found success in 1982, long player ‘Happy Families’ selling Gold in the UK, and its 3 singles becoming international hits. They went on to have 7 Top 40 hits and 70 weeks in the UK album charts. Long-standing admirers include Moby, John Grant and Honey Dijon, who states that “British synth pop was hugely influential in the burgeoning house music scene and Blancmange was a big part of that.”

June 1995 saw an alternative white-covered version released, this had a different track listing on the 4th side of the LP set with new tracks. The music on the album is edited together from various live broadcasts that the duo had transmitted to radio stations all over the world using ISDN networking. At the time ISDN was a relatively new technology that had the bandwidth to carry high-quality digital audio. 2024 Marks the 30th anniversary of this fan-favourite album, to celebrate this the audio from both versions has been amalgamated and sequenced by FSOL. Pressed on clear vinyl with a brand-new front cover, this will also be pressed on 2CD as an RSD exclusive.

                                Orbital

                                Orbital - 2024 Reissue

Originally released on September 30, 1991, ‘The Green Album’ contains landmark Orbital tracks including their breakthrough 1990 single ‘Chime’, and the evergreen comedown classic ‘Belfast’.

Following the success of ‘Chime’, Pete Tong signed Orbital to London/ffrr Records, and Tong allowed the Hartnolls the freedom to record the album they wanted to make. Where their contemporaries on the rave circuit would knock out ten formulaic 4/4 piano bangers with guest vocalists and call it an album, for their debut Orbital wanted to explore wider textures, different rhythms, stranger mind spaces. “Our heroes were always Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, the Severed Heads – people who made proper, satisfying, full albums,” explains Paul, “and we were like, yeah, that’s what we want to do.”

It was this ambition that led to Orbital becoming giants of electronic music. The Hartnoll brothers would go on to redefine what dance music could do and the place it took within popular culture itself. Their music has influenced and inspired artists from Björk to Bicep and they have collaborated with minds as diverse as Madonna, Kraftwerk and Professor Brian Cox.

Following The Green Album their second self-titled album – aka The Brown Album – cemented Orbital’s position as musical visionaries. A career of creative leaps quite unlike those usually seen in the fast turnover world of dance music followed, including creating soundtracks for Hollywood films including 1997’s Event Horizon, and most recently for Mike Myers Netflix series The Pentaverate.

Alongside their boundary-pushing work in the recording studio, Orbital earned a reputation as one of the best live acts on the planet. This year marks the 30th anniversary of their legendary 1994 Glastonbury performance, often cited as converting the festival to dance music.

                                        By Any Other Name

A collection of unreleased tracks from the early 90's "Jumpin' & Pumpin'" era, when FSOL hid behind various guises. Generally revolving around bleep, hardcore and ambient house; three, then-recently-established genres that FSOL would explore and develop on throughout the extensive discography. A lot of these tracks have been out of print and quite sought after for many years, making this anthology quite a special releases for fans of Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans' boundary-pushing project.

                                            Helicon

                                            Live In London

Recorded at a packed-out Paper Dress Vintage in London, it's a discography-spanning set that sees the band storm through tracks from their highly-praised 2023 album 'God Intentions' (which they were touring in support of at the time), as well as 2020's 'This Can Only Lead To Chaos' and their 2017 self-titled debut. Talking about the album, vocalist/guitarist John-Paul Hughes recalls: "We played a sold-out Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney, London, on Sunday 30th July 2023, as the last date on our summer UK tour. Helicon is a band built on live performance and musicianship, not fancy studio production tricks. We recorded our Fuzz Club Live Session back in 2020 but to capture the power and energy of a Helicon live show in front of an audience is a buzz. This setlist has songs from all 3 studio albums released on Fuzz Club, so it's a nice way to tie that period of work together."

Your Number Please - 2024 Reissue

Arranged and conducted by Andre Previn, "Your Number, Please" is Julie London's tribute to famous male singers, musicians, and entertainment personalities of the 1950's Thirteen evergreen love songs for all those romantic occasions! The original out of print album is expensive and hard to fnd, so it's a collector's treat to have it readily available again - and with all the original artwork and liner notes included. Fans of Julie London's icily sexy but emotionally downbeat style will be thrilled by this collection.

These Furious Flames! Redskins Live! 1985-86

In the mid ’80s, in the midst and direct aftermath of the era defining Miner’s Strike, the Redskins, as political activists, delivered their electrifying and radical Socialist Workers Party missives and broadsides through the ministry of their music - a unique post-punk rock/soul hybrid that gained their lead singer, Chris Dean, the sobriquet ‘Tamla Motormouth’.The Redskins were taking a stand for the working man and by standing up, they stood out - and never so forcefully as in the live arena! With their stellar musicianship and crack brass section honed through a never ending whorl of ‘fighting fund’ benefit gigs, they were the furious flames that kept the anti-Thatcher fires of dissent burning throughout those challenging years marked by her seeming unassailability.

These Furious Flames!’ is a 25 track documentation of the energy, commitment and drive of the Redskins as that campaigning live act. Issued in 2xCD capacity wallet, double vinyl and digital editions, each format couples together a recording of the full set of the finale concert of their 1985 ‘Kick Over Apartheid!’ tour - including guest appearances from Jerry Dammers and Billy Bragg - with the BBC broadcast tracks from their 1986 concert at the Town And Country Club.

The double CD edition comes with a 40 page booklet that compiles new and period quotes by band members Martin Hewes, Chris Dean, Paul Hookham and Kevin Robertson as well as thoughts by an array of associates and celebrity fans including poet Atilla The Stockbroker, Billy Bragg, Colin Revolting, their studio album producers Pat Foley & Chris Silagyi and DJ Gary Crowley. The booklet also contains gig reviews, photographs and a condensed digest of media quotes about the band.

The double vinyl LP format has printed inner bags replete with evocative archive photographs and a written introduction by Redskins founding member Martin Hewes, with whose co-operation and input this celebratory release has been curated."

                                                      The Future Sound Of London

                                                      Environment 7.003

FSOL present the final instalment in the Environments Trilogy. “7.003” goes deeper and darker than the previous two albums, the flavour here harping back with memories of the groups 90s sounding pre “Dead Cities” album. On this release we have swamp laden electronics dripping from cavernous breakbeats weaving in and out of otherworldly chords and strings firmly back in the driving seat. FSOL deliver not only the final piece of the jigsaw but a clever jaw-dropingly sensorium.

                                                        STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Crisp percussive trickles and paddling guitar snippets weave around each-other into echoing electronic chirps. There are moments of jagged, glitched unease but the soaring melodic direction and airy, echoic haze more than offset that. As ever, a wonderful and perfectly produced outing from FSOS.

The Flaming Lips 2002 album “Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots” was a huge album in the UK, selling over 300,000 units on its way to Platinum certification. The success was driven by 4 hit singles, including the title track and the Lip’s most popular song “Do You Realize”. The band frequently toured the UK during the album cycle, playing larger venues than previous tours, and were frequent guests on several radio shows.

This release is a recording of the last show of the UK dates in January 2003 at London’s Forum Theatre. The 15-song show was broadcast nationally by the BBC. In addition to playing key songs from “Yoshimi” album, the set list includes fan-favourites such as “She Don’t Use Jelly”, “Waitin’ For A Superman” and “Race For The Prize”.

Bob Stanley Presents London A To Z 1962-1973

If you threw a house party in London in the late twentieth century, before the smart phone rendered it redundant, you could guarantee that the following morning there would be a dog-eared copy of the A to Z behind the sofa, or under the coffee table, probably in a Tesco bag. Everybody had at least one. It was an essential aid in understanding London. It joined the dots and threw up obscure names printed over hitherto unexplored grids of streets: Alperton, Shooters Hill, Honor Oak, Tooting Graveney, Childs Hill, Ladywell. It invited you to create your own personal map of London, discover your own secret routes, your own special places.

You could peruse the A to Z with the knowledge of who lived where – Sandy Denny in Wimbledon, before she moved to Muswell Hill which was already legendary as the home of the Kinks. Arterial roads as grisly as Archway Road (Rod Stewart) or Holloway Road (Joe Meek) or could be made magic through their pop connections.

Put together by Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley, this is the soundtrack of London’s centre (Bert Jansch and John Renbourn’s ‘Soho’, Nick Drake’s ‘Mayfair’) and its hinterlands (Al Stewart’s ‘Swiss Cottage Manoeuvres’, Humble Pie’s ‘Beckton Dumps’, Julie Driscoll’s ‘Vauxhall To Lambeth Bridge’) with a few transport links (Barbara Ruskin’s ‘Euston Station’, Norma Tanega’s ‘Clapham Junction’) thrown in to help you navigate your A to Z. This isn’t London swinging cinematically, but it has the exact feel of the city’s streets and suburbs in the late 60s and early 70s.

What might be lurking in these locations, waiting to be uncovered on a cold winter Saturday? Corner caffs with Pepsi signs. Second-hand record shops and rickety street markets. Many are gone, but not all. This compilation is a musical travel guide – squint, and sometimes London can still seem magical. This is its soundtrack…

Originally out in 1991, FSOL's "Papua New Guinea" is one of those classic rave era moments. Combining a huge dub bassline with breakbeats, piano lines and synth washes, ethereal Bulgarian vocals and other atmospheric efx the track was a monster club / field tune back in the day. So much so that it got reissued a year later with a whole new set of remixes. UK techno originals Andrew Weatherall (Sabres Of Paradise) and Graham Massey (808 State) serve up a remix each while FSOL's Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain bring us four more. All that and the original too. It's all you need.

‘Timeless’ is regularly cited as one of electronic music’s most critically acclaimed and influential albums, a ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ for the rave generation, and it remains as relevant and influential as ever.

As Tony Marcus, writing in Mixmag back in 1995, concluded: “‘Timeless’ is a record that couldn’t have been made if it wasn’t for the party, the MDMA, the noise and the rage. ‘Timeless’ tells you that you can’t ignore or erase this history because to Goldie, and to so many others, it holds their lives, dreams and feelings.”

‘Timeless’ went on to become a landmark release, not just for drum & bass but for electronic music as a whole. Within a year of its release (1995), it had racked up more than 100,000 sales.

A complex and sometimes belligerent character in real life, on record, John Martyn was the epitome of the folk-dreamer, embodying the spirit of the bourgeoning London acoustic scene of the late 60s - Well-known and respected for his 70s albums Solid Air and One World, this is where it began.

Released in October 1967, London Conversation was the first album by the first 'rock' signing to Chris Blackwell's Island Records. With eight of the twelve tracks written by Martyn, it is easy to see why Blackwell was such a champion of his work. The five- minute plus sitar drone of Rolling Home pointed the way to the possibilities that lay ahead. The sleeve captured the earnest folky sitting among the capital's chimney tops, strumming his acoustic. At once Martyn was part of it; Martyn was above it.

Produced by Martin Terefe and Downtown Music UK Limited, the record reflects an emotional journey of the times, having been recorded during the pandemic after many months of isolation and the inability to collaborate in person. Recorded in December 2020 at Church Studios in London, the recording session brings together UK jazz artists, Nubya Garcia, Shabaka Hutchings, Theon Cross, Dave Okumu, Benji B, Tom Skinner and more. Producer Martin Terefe describes, “Sometimes the music is uncomfortable, other times it's familiar and joyous and other times it's like deep meditation.”

Vibraphone and keyboard player, master arranger and bandleader, Mulatu Astatke is one of the all-time greats of Ethiopian music and the creator of his own original music form, Ethio jazz. Through the acclaimed Ethiopiques album series and through featuring on the soundtrack to the Jim Jarmusch film Broken Flowers, his music has belatedly reached a global audience and a new, younger generation of fans. In November of last year, he recorded an inspired new album with London psych jazz band The Heliocentrics for Strut’s ‘Inspiration Information’ studio collaboration series. Now, Strut are proud to present, for the first time anywhere, the definitive Mulatu career retrospective covering his landmark ‘60s and ‘70s recordings.

Mulatu is a true pioneer of African music. He was the first Ethiopian musician of his generation to travel extensively and to record abroad – he studied in the UK in Wales and at Trinity College Of Music in London, cutting his teeth on the buoyant London jazz scene of the early ‘60s. He became the first African student to attend Harvard and he lived and recorded in New York, developing a unique sound that fused Western jazz with traditional Ethiopian melodies.

Tracing the progression of his Ethio jazz experiments with full access to all of the labels for whom he recorded, Mulatu Astatke: New York-Addis-London is the essential Mulatu. Covering his first recordings in the UK during 1965, his groundbreaking fusions for the small Worthy label in New York and his key ‘70s recordings back in Addis on Amha, Phillips and Axum, the album features comprehensive sleeve notes by Miles Cleret, boss of the excellent Soundway Records imprint, and rare, previously unseen photos from Mulatu’s personal archive.

Part prime-time partisan punk noise, part Futurist disdain with a full dose of Dadaist sense of humour.

Recorded with the regular live line up of the last 12 months (4 drummers, 3 guitars, bass and 3 different vocalists) producing the band’s blistering blend of Monks, Stingrays and Pussy Galore and like all these seminal bands, they have pulled apart the possibilities of 60s garage music and dragged them fighting and screaming into the 21st Century, albeit entirely with the vintage equipment of the day of course.

LDC have also continued in their adopted music hall tradition of having multiple guest turns. This time in the form of regular contributors; Medway poet-cum-agit artist Sir Sexton Ming and Miss Bongo Debbie (Headcoatees, Nuns, A-Lines etc etc), plus the legendary back from the dead punk raconteur Mr Dick Scum (Armitage Shanks), songstress of love Miss Ludella Black (Masonics, Delmonas, Headcoatees) on vocals. The deft sax-work of Mr Terry Edwards (Madness, Gallon Drunk etc etc), who took time out from working on Yoko Ono's Meltdown Festival 'Double Fantasy' finale, to contribute, with last but not least a few guitar squiggles from meanest guitar this side of Rochester High Street, Mr Mickey Hampshire (Milkshakes, Masonics etc) completing the picture.

All in all there are 17 tracks of the bands signature intense melee of short sharp punk, short sharp pop and darker heavier psych-outs clocking in at around 45 minutes in total.

Recorded at analogue studio Gizzard, a place that really suited the hard, fast and loud working methods of the band, engineered by Ed Deegan, a kindred spirit in experimenting and bastardizing the fuzzy edges of music, LDC have in many ways, come of age.

                                                                                              Orbital

Legendary electronic music duo Orbital return in Spring 2023 with new album Optical Delusion, the Hartnoll brothers first studio album since 2018’s Monster’s Exist. Recorded in Orbital’s Brighton studio, Optical Delusion includes contributions from Sleaford Mods, Penelope Isles, Anna B Savage, The Little Pest, Dina Ipavic, Coppe, and perhaps most surprisingly, The Medieval Baebes.

For the first single Orbital have joined forces with Sleaford Mods on their fabulous, furious new single “Dirty Rat” Featuring a searing vocal from Jason Williamson over kinetic, driving beats, “Dirty Rat” is Orbital at their most vital, still utterly relevant and pushing forward over 30 years since they broke through with their landmark single “Chime”. Think KLF or Underworld 'Born Slippy’ - ‘Dirty Rat’ is a primal scream which crosses genres and generations.

'Optical Delusion' sees the duo joined by a host of collaborators (inc. Jason Williams of Sleaford Mods) and ends up being a development of their established sound, but renewed with a fierce political vigour and hearty resolve.

The second instalment from London Odense Ensemble digs deeper into the group's vision of what modern psychedelic jazz should sound like. Cut from the same sessions as Jaiyede Sessions vol. 1, released last summer, vol. 2 presents a more nuanced approach to the material. On this set the ensemble focuses on shorter, layered pieces - travelling from deep spiritual jazz grooves to gorgeous free-flowing minimalism to full-on acid jazz. There's echo-drenched flutes being absorbed into layers of analog synth pads and guitars, bossa beats and double bass sequences merging with electronics. It’s an intoxicating mélange of sounds and styles, spanning wide temporal and geographical distances. London Odense Ensemble came together when two of the finest exponents of London's flourishing jazz scene, flautist and saxofonist Tamar Osborn and keyboard specialist Al MacSween, came over to Denmark to explore new sounds with Causa Sui's Jakob Skøtt and Jonas Munk, as well as local bass player Martin Rude. For two days the group laid down grooves and ideas and experimented in the studio, and later the best segments were edited and mixed by Jonas Munk, who took a somewhat liberal approach to the mixing process, often dyeing the material with external effects and synthesizers. Jaiyede Sessions are the kinds of records that defy genre-terms, yet have its own instantly recognizable fingerprint. It carries a unique shared vision between the players of what modern psychedelic jazz sounds like. bios: Tamar Osborn: Saxophonist, composer and multi-wind instrumentalist is the creative force behind modal jazz ensemble Collocutor (On The Corner Records). Originally released in 1997, Evergreen marked a critical and commercial renaissance for the band after more than half a decade’s hiatus; an album that rightfully returned them to the Top 10 that sported three UK hits including the seminal ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’.

When Echo & The Bunnymen imploded at the end of the 1980s, the decade lost one of its greatest bands in the messiest of circumstances. Until then, theirs had been a magical rise: since 1979 they’d outgrown the Liverpool punk scene, outshone their alternative pop rivals of the mid-80s, and looked set to step into the big league. But by the end of the decade the magic that had kept them together was slowly unthreading. The die was cast in 1988 when Ian McCulloch quit after a tour of Japan. It should have marked the end for the band, but the remaining Bunnymen decided to persevere and seek a replacement. Unthinkable tragedy struck in 1989 when drummer Pete de Freitas was killed in a motorbike accident.

The finality – as it then seemed – of the Bunnymen was all the worse for the nagging sense that they hadn’t so much faded away as burned out before their time.

After a half-decade wilderness years of side projects and solo outings, in January 1997 Will Sergeant, Les Pattinson and Ian McCulloch decided to come back together in a recording studio for the first time in ten years. The reborn Bunnymen entered Doghouse studios in Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire, as fate would have it at the same time as Oasis, then gliding on a post-Knebworth high as the biggest band in Britain. In a pivotal generational passing of the baton, the two legends of their eras merged on the killer ace nestling up McCulloch’s sleeve, ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, featuring a 24-year-old Liam Gallagher on backing “yeah, yeah, yeah!”s and tambourine shakes.

Any doubts among fans that the Bunnymen might have been making a terrible mistake by regrouping were obliterated by the song’s first chorus, crashing the UK Top Ten at number 8 in June 1997, the first taster of the album, the highest new entry in the band’s career and equalling their best ever chart position for ‘The Cutter’.

The self-produced sessions at Doghouse were further embellished with strings, horns and vocal arrangements at the more imperious sounding Abbey Road and the resultant album achieved the almost impossible; commercial, conceptual and critical acclaim on a par with their past achievements. NME called it “impossibly good. The first comeback in history not to be dogged by a nauseous sense of distress, the first one to actually sound important”, the Melody Maker declared “the new songs are as good as the old songs, and probably better than almost anything you’ll hear this year”.

Former manager (and later KLF pop maverick Bill Drummond) spoke of their return at the time: “Within the soul of Echo & The Bunnymen there was a pure aspiration that transcended all those would-be dragged up memories. It’s as if The Bunnymen were going for some ultimate and indefinable glory.”

Ten years since they last graced the Top Ten Album Chart, Evergreen returned them there in July 1997. The Bunnymen had proved themselves not only deserving of a second wind but effortlessly welcomed by the musical landscape of the late-90s. Arriving in the season of Oasis’s Be Here Now and The Verve’s Urban Hymns, Evergreen was both of and beyond its time.

At the time, McCulloch proudly spoke of the album as the best he’d believed they’d ever made. Through the sepia lens of hindsight, today he understates its value as containing “at least three great songs, which is three more than most bands have in their entire catalogue.” By name, the ballads ‘Nothing Lasts Forever’, ‘Forgiven’ and ‘Just A Touch Away’. Beyond McCulloch’s holy trinity, Evergreen was just as notable for its snake-charming title track and the similarly serpentine ‘Empire State Halo’, both, like the best Bunnymen songs of yore, reaching our ears somewhere from Norris Green via Marrakesh. Elsewhere the Mersey shuffle of singles ‘Don’t Let it Get You Down’ and ‘I Want To Be There (When You Come)’ sees the brighter side of the band, as open and as relevant as their contemporaries past and present.

“Someone asked me the other day why I reunited the Bunnymen,” McCulloch commented that summer. “Well, I haven’t. I’ve re-ignited the Bunnymen. Having said that, they never stopped glowing somewhere in my heart.”

That glow made music, Evergreen still blinds.

All profits from the release will be donated to Music Cares, a charity chosen by Paul’s daughter Amelia, who comments: "Music Cares is a charity that helps people in the music industry who are struggling with addiction issues. 14 years ago, Paul was given help and support from the organization who helped fund extended outpatient care and therapy that enabled him to have 14 subsequent happy and productive years. Just two weeks ago he mentioned them in an interview and often expressed his gratitude and desire to pay their support forward so others could be helped too.”

Paul Ryder's guitar grooves were the backbone of songs like "Delightful", "Freaky Dancing" and this track, "Tart, Tart" which went on to influence the whole Madchester thing, and well, you know the rest....

Originally from the UK’s post punk DIY scene, Blancmange found success in 1982, long player ‘Happy Families’ selling Gold in the UK, and its 3 singles becoming international hits. They went on to have 7 Top 40 hits and 70 weeks in the UK album charts. Long-standing admirers include Moby, John Grant and Honey Dijon, who states that “British synth pop was hugely influential in the burgeoning house music scene and Blancmange was a big part of that.” 40 years and 16 albums later, Blancmange have re-signed to London Records with the captivating and inspired ‘Private View’, melding futuristic electronics, Neil Arthur’s unmistakable vocal hooks, and songs spanning buoyant and joyful to dark and brooding.

A double Platinum and Top 3 UK album, ‘Hormonally Yours’ secured Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit a place in British pop history - spawning the single ‘Stay’, which spent a staggering eight consecutive weeks at the top of the UK charts - and won the duo an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection.

‘Hormonally Yours’ also features singles ‘Goodbye Cruel World’ and ‘I Don’t Care’, tackles friendships gone wrong on ‘My Sixteenth Apology’, powerful, dangerous attraction on ‘Emotional Thing’ and documents a friend’s coming out on ‘Are We In Love Yet?’ Fan favourite ‘The Trouble With Andre’, the fullthrottle glam-blues of ‘Cat Woman’ and glorious finale ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’ is the album’s glorious finale: an exhalation; a glorious, earthshuddering moment that recalls the epic melancholy of David Bowie’s ‘Five Years’ and The Beatles’ ‘A Day In The Life’.

Shakespears Sister’s second album, ‘Hormonally Yours’ provided the perfect encapsulation of the duo’s musical ying and yang; a deftly delivered balance of pop melody with a spikey alternative darkness.

In recent years London has become an epicenter for experimental, visionary jazz. On this unique session, two of the finest exponents of the London jazz scene, Tamar Osborn and Al MacSween, join forces with members of the celebrated Danish psychedelic underground - Jonas Munk, Jakob Skøtt and Martin Rude – to create a heady sonic brew. On this first volume of material there's everything one could hope for in such a collaboration: sonically it summons the free flowing euphoria of Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders' work in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

But there's also a focus on rhythmic energy and vitality that calls to mind the grooviest krautrock or electric period Miles Davis, as well as a healthy dose of electronic experiments. Throughout these five tracks the quintet paints with a colourful palette. Tamar Osborn shifts between baritone sax and flutes. Keyboardist Al MacSween doesn't just stick with the tried and true electric piano - an instrument which he masters - but showers these tracks in analog synths and effects as well. Add to that the fact that Jonas Munk took a somewhat creative approach when editing and mixing these pieces – with effects boxes wired in, occasionally giving the mix a dubby, ambient atmosphere.

Similar to Munk and Skøtt's main project, Causa Sui, digging into the past becomes a vehicle to open up the future. What the quintet has created in these sessions is something quite unique.Bios: Tamar Osborn: Saxophonist, composer and multi-wind instrumentalist is the creative force behind modal jazz ensemble Collocutor (On The Corner Records). Dean and Hewes were members of the Socialist Workers Party and politics guided the music created by Redskins, their soulful songs brimming with righteous passion. Six tracks on ‘Neither Washington Nor Moscow’ were released as singles, including the band’s only Top 40 “Bring It Down! (This Insane Thing)” and the prophetic “Kick Over The Statues”. Redskins split in late 1986, leaving a legacy and influence that stretches far beyond their short recording career.

Made up of Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy, the Sugababes represented a fiercely independent and creative UK scene at the turn of the millennium. Different from much of what was out at the time, “One Touch” crossed over from the purely pop world and became an oddball curveball across clubland and it’s after hours scenes with its clubber-friendly, downbeat hooks, flurries into UKG and hip-hip informed production. One Dave Walker who used to work here was a big proponent of the Sugababes when he and Huw Morgan (of Electriks fame) used to do a night at Harter Street Lounge here in Manchester. It's a bona fide classic of UK pop music which recalls a proud time for the industry.

Since 2017 FSOL have released whats called "Calendar" albums, which are digitally delivered monthly tracks that form a 12 track album by the end of the year. This release picks the best tracks from the last 4 years and brings them together in a seamlessly mixed 50 minute journey - 11 songs from FSOL, Humanoid and Synth-a, engineered and mixed by Yage at FSOL's 9Lwest Studios.

I’ll tell you whut: FSOL have long none of the impetusand drive to conjure up sounds of the future. Much like Autechre every release seems to conjure up new, unfathomable levels of synthesis that have remained unattainable. Infact, few electronica luminaries have achieved the varied and down right arresting cataglogue of sounds, rhythms, atmospheres and sequences that this pioneering act have.

“Music From Calendars” sees a beautifully plotted journey through their most recent soundscapes. Contrasting utopic and dystopic, multi-dimensional sonic vistas with blasted machine rhythms, overdriven synthesizer functions and atmospheres grabbed from galaxies far, far away. It’s a transportive journey that leaves you gasping for air as soon as it leaves the cerebral orbit and by the record’s finally should have you parachuted back into your consciousness reborn and invigorated. Highly recommended!

The new album, Californian Soil, embodies a new clarity of purpose centred around frontwoman Hannah Reid, who crafts a message of femininity and power on the new material.

Barry says: London Grammar's latest outing follows 2017's 'Truth Is A Beautiful Thing' and places much more emphasis on Reid's voice, veering into rich orchestral downbeat territory. Though the typical guitars and indie chord progressions are still present, it's a much more refined and nuanced direction, and one that suits them perfectly.

Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra

                                                                                                                                  Promises

Promises is the result of three distinct musical worlds colliding. Pharoah Sanders’ jazz improvisation and Flo Po’s twinkling electronics are layered over the string section of the LSO, bound together by a loose symphonic structure. These are textures that rarely sit together in a single composition, yet somehow they seamlessly knit into a cohesive whole. It’s quite a feat, one that could only be pulled off by artists as accomplished as these.

The entire album revolves around a recurring phrase played by Sam Shepherd on the piano, harpsichord and celesta. This phrase becomes the central pulse around which the other textures float, suspended in the space inbetween. The loose tempo allows for the improvised saxophone passages to flow freely and for Pharaoh to lean into the most tender moments of his performance.

At the beginning of the album the string section gradually emerges like a delicate silver thread before building through a series of sweeping chord progressions and moments of bittersweet dissonance. This leads into the third movement where Sam Shephard’s deft synth arrangement becomes the focal point. And later on we hear a hushed vocal performance from Pharoah. It’s one of the most touching moments of the album, with years of lived experience seeping through every crack and bend of his voice in a captivating way.

Promises is an album of subtle expression which invokes a feeling of boundlessness. It’s a wide open sonic space where each note is allowed to resonate to its full conclusion. There’s a constant feeling of push and pull, of tension and release, though it never really resolves fully. Something is always left hanging in the air - a question, a prayer, an inexplicable feeling. It’s perhaps one of the most surprising and profound releases of the year.

Epic!

Within a decade or two, Bummed would be hailed as one of the best records of the ’80s, often by the self-same publications that had slated it back in the day – a harbinger of the seismic shift about to take place in British popular music, away from the squeaky-clean, corporately ordained pop-radio fodder which had increasingly dominated the charts since punk, and back towards the more aggressive, unruly and experience-hungry urges which had always pulsed through rock ‘n’ roll.

With artwork lovingly replicated by original Manchester designers Central Station Design, this album is on vinyl for the first time since it’s original release.

Cavernous and rambling, heavy and churning, the tunes here were much more direct whilst the grooves were (can we say it?) BAGGY as fuck! One of Factory Records' greatest ever releases.

While their first album 'Squirrel And G-Man' had been all ramshackle ramblings and jarring grooves, by their second album 'Bummed' they were already showing signs of what was to come on 'Pills and Thrills' with off kilter funky grooves carrying Sean's sneering nonsensicle lyrics.

By 1990, 'Madchester' was in full swing, this was the time of the indie-dance crossover. Previously there had been a very distinct line drawn between these two genre's which was rarely (if ever) crossed, but rave culture and Ecstacy had erased such rigid barriers and with DJ Paul Oakenfold more dancefloor orientated production, the Mondays embraced this change and added loose (ok, yes, baggy) psychedelic grooves to their uncompromising lyrics and shady tales. This album (along with Primal Scream's 'Screamadelica') came to defined this indie-funk-psych-rave melding of genres and hedonistic scene perfectly.

This was their time, and they didn't fail to deliver.

Not just a post-punk classic, a classic full stop. Mind-blowing at the time, this is now simply seen as one of the greatest records ever made. Both LP and CD come in special clear slip case printed with Ray Lowry’s artwork, which can be removed to reveal the Pennie Smith photo below.

Bringing the nascent drum & bass scene to the masses, the album careered into the Top 10 and hit a number of Album Of The Year polls, with Goldie becoming a star in the process. However, while everyone was eagerly anticipating a repeat of the "Timeless" formula, Goldie had other ideas. Instead, he pushed his creativity to the max and released "Saturnz Return". Brave, innovative, experimental and bursting with emotion, the two-disc 150-minute album proved to be one of the most bold and divisive sets in history. The groundbreaking set featured David Bowie, Noel Gallagher and KRS-One.

It compiles brand new remixes alongside remastered remixes - which receive their first release on CD - as well as other rarities. The collection also adds three rarities that were discovered in Goldie’s personal archive, all of which shine fresh light on the influence that classical music had upon him. These consist of the string arrangement for "Mother", plus early instrumental versions of "Dragonfly" and "What You Won’t Do For Love". It’s completed by remixes that were discovered in the London Records archive. Now remastered and making their debut on CD, these include rare mixes from Optical, MJ Cole and Grooverider.

The act spearheaded the acid revival movement in the UK and have become a formidable and well-received live act in the process.

Collaborators on this excursion include old friend Mutado Pintado (Warmduscher), alongside new acquaintances Alan Vega & Arthur Baker, Simon Topping (A Certain Ratio), JoshCaffe & Bubbles Bubblesynski; who all give the various tracks a distinct, freakish individuality. A mix of said vocal tracks & hard as nails instrumentals, PL expertly channel the ghosts of acid house into an overtly gritty n grimey style that suits their home locale as much as it does sound tracking all-nite raves under graffiti covered motorway arches or rotting abandoned buildings...Top stuff from these warehouse-dwelling devils...

Such has been the interest in this masterpiece of electronica over the years that the guys have been back into the studio to revisit it. "Yage 2019" takes the core of the original and rebuilds it. All together there are eleven tracks reconstructions and interpretations, woven together (as FSOL do) into a 42 minute dreamscape journey. A wonderful update to this iconic release.

Birthed from the seminal 1980s post-punk band Maximum Joy, MXMJoY is the dramatic reimagining by founding members Janine Rainforth and Charlie Llewellin. Their brand new album, ‘p.e.a.c.e.’ is due for a limited edition vinyl release in February 2019 via Janine’s own label, London Field Recordings. A pivotal point in Bristol’s dub-informed lineage, Pitchfork compared Maximum Joys sound to "one of the Slits backed by the Gang of Four”, while PopMatters said, "Musically, the group’s use of complex percussion, horns, danceable bass lines, and overtly English female vocals built a bridge between the worlds of Afrobeat, reggae, avant-garde jazz, funk and pop". Returning with a new line-up and all new material, MXMJoY have crafted an album that remains faithful to their roots but showcases an expanded experimental direction into dark electronics and expertly used samples and effects.

An immediately enchanting album, ‘p.e.a.c.e’ also explores lush synthscapes, deep house hooks and a pop sensibility partnered with that unmistakable and bewitching vocal. The album was then written and recorded between Rainforth’s Hackney Studio and Llewellin in the US. Joining them on the tracks are prolific bassist Marek Bero, guitarists James Byron and Jono Trott who contributed their own unique sounds, and drummer Miroslav Haldina who brings analogue tones and depth to the records machine beat backing. They also enlisted David McEwen, who’s worked with Janine on her solo project and is long time sound engineer for On-U Sound and Adrian Sherwood’s recordings and Asian Dub Foundation, to work with them on the overall sound.

Across ten masterfully produced tracks you’ll hear an epic amalgamation of their wide scope of influences, and as ever tied up into the unique MXMJoY package. The title track and entrancing ‘Daughters of Tomorrow’ open the album with fittingly trip-hop beats and gloriously catchy choruses while songs like ‘Can Man Conquer It All’ and ‘Ultraviolet’ dwell in darker spaces melodically, with dreamlike washes of keys and delicate guitars. Elsewhere album highlights ‘Archetype’ and ‘We Breathe’ boast some of the strongest songwriting of MXMJoYs career with unforgettable vocal performances and lush electric guitar tones.

Three years since their last album, following the birth of their son, and over a decade since the release of their debut as the song writing partnership behind hotly-tipped southeast London indie-folk pioneers Indigo Moss, the duo have produced yet another beautifully crafted and delicately delivered gem that will delight fans old and new.

The duo, now residents of Hastings, have earned a reputation for doing things slightly differently over the years. Having toured in tin tabernacle churches, village halls, workingman’s clubs and by canal boat, not to mention quitting a buzz band on the brink of stardom, they chose a different route entirely. Leaving the bright lights of London behind them in favour of a more DIY approach away from the city, Fair Lady London reflects both a change in environment and mentality.

Likewise, the recording is anything but simple. When we say ‘studio album’ it couldn’t be that straightforward. Having worked with legendary producer Ethan Johns on their last outing Expatriot (2015) Fair Lady London sees them return to the Tascam 246 4-track cassette recorder on which they recorded their 2012 offering La Ferme De Fontenaille in a barn in the Loire, however this time finding a quiet corner of a castle in the rolling valleys of East Sussex.

Former members of Danny And The Champions of the World, the album sees them joining forces with Danny George Wilson once again, signing to his and Del Day’s Maiden Voyage Recording Co. label. This follows album releases on such distinctive labels as Heavenly and Loose.

Fair Lady London marks the latest chapter in the journey of two of the UK's brightest stars. ‘We always said we’d do five albums as a duo, like Simon and Garfunkel'. laughs Hannah-Lou. 'Maybe this is the last one, but we always say that.'

"Archived 9" brings together another 12 such tracks; in some cases these are completed but unreleased songs from that time, in others the songs have been reconstructed or enhanced and then further mixed to form the journey. This album is not just a collection of random off-cuts. It is a fully realized album, worthy of sitting alongside the rest of the band's critically acclaimed work. Following the release of the ’Audio Track 5’ EP and live performances at the Strelka Institute (Moscow), Barbican Centre and Tate Tanks (London), electronic producer and musician Darren Cunningham AKA Actress and the London Contemporary Orchestra (LCO) release a full album of their collaboration on Ninja Tune entitled ‘Lageos’.

Originally performed at the Barbican in February 2016, the project was curated by Boiler Room and LCO with support from Arts Council England and Ninja Tune. The music created a synergy between both live electronic and acoustic components, not just in the harmonies but in the way the traditional instruments were spliced into new hybrid instruments. As part of the process, Actress and LCO augmented traditional piano and created sounds from objects as varied as temple bowls and plastic bags. The show, a massive sell-out success, eventually lead to the release of this much anticipated album.

For the album, LCO recorded the individual instrumental parts as stems at Spitfire Studio then sent to Actress to manipulate, in turn delivering some truly unique new pieces. LCO also went on to reinterpret Actress classics ‘Hubble' and ’N.E.W' among others from his catalogue.

"In many ways the collaboration is about exploring an ambiguity of sound that sits between electronic and acoustic spaces; something that we’re aiming to push further as part of the live shows,” says the LCO’s Hugh Brunt of the collaboration. “For much of the set we look to realize as close as possible the timbres and colours of Actress’ electronics through acoustic means (which he in turn responds to); something of a physicalisation of those synthesized or sampled sounds. That has involved utilizing various accessories: plastic bags (for white noise or to emulate an EQ’d hi-hat); keys; Blu-Tack (to dampen the piano’s upper strings); milk frothers on harp strings, etc."

The project’s genesis was very much inspired by, as well as performed at, the mecca of brutalism – the Barbican Centre. Iannis Xenakis, a Greek composer and architect who would create buildings to fit his scores, and scores to fit his buildings was an inspiration, Actress and LCO took architectural layouts of the Barbican and created sounds directly inspired by its shapes.

Fitting in nicely to his previous dusty electronic workouts, Lageos is a fascinating and impeccably curated suite of brutalist ambience and avant-garde electronica.

Arrows Of Love, the 5-piece led by co-writers Nima and Nuha, resemble more of a collective than a band, having collaborated onstage with musicians from Flamingods to Bo Ningen, Ulrika Spacek to Wolf Alice, and even a performance from newly-acclaimed LA director Eva Doloveska. Living a lifestyle of artistic warehouse communities, Arrows Of Love are a constantly evolving force, led by fiercely energetic live shows and wildly inventive yet diverse songwriting. Embarking upon their second album, ‘PRODUCT: Your Soundtrack To The Impending Societal Collapse’, the band found themselves backed by the UK's highly competitive PRS Foundation "Momentum Music Fund" and after accepting an invite from CMJ Music Marathon the band confirmed a string of DITfunded US showcases, followed by a support slot with British postpunk legends The Fall, and The Stooges’ Mike Watt (US). Arrows Of Love are, above all, a live phenomenon.

Originally aligned with the early East London wave of bohemian rock bands, it was their fiercely independent and creative drive that took them across the globe, from Texas to Poland, SXSW to End of the Road Festival, and sharing stages with the likes of British Sea Power, 80’s Matchbox B-Line Disaster, and The Wytches. Working to cut this live intensity to record is Godrich-mentored UK producer Mikko Gordon (Thom Yorke, Gaz Combes), and USA’s Bob Weston of Shellac, who pledged to work with the band for life after receiving singer Teranchi in his Chicago hub. This is a band made for the transatlantic, drawing comparisons to US bands with the discordant, emotive musicianship of Sonic Youth and the raw power of McClusky, delivered in their own, inimitable, distinct British style. Gearing up for the album release on Nottingham label I’m Not From London Records, the band are set to prove themselves the real deal. This second LP sees a band fully diversified, ready to release something truly unique.

Showcased last year at The Barbican Centre London and Strelka Institute Moscow and in conjunction with Boiler Room this 12” release named simply "Audio Track 5" serves as an introduction to a larger body which will be released on Ninja Tune and Boiler Room TV as both a full length album plus live show in August this year. Over a decade of releases Cunningham has built a reputation as a fine creator of cerebral abstract techno, or R&B concrète, crafting pulsing kickdrums, jittering percussion and chopped sample loops into churning, rumbling tracks soaked in static. But he has also been on record saying he wants to make ‘classical stuff for a modern generation’. A truely defining artist, who isn't afraid to push challenging content if it gets his message across clearer, we've been big fans of Actress here at Piccadilly since forever. In this new collaboration, commissioned and curated by Boiler Room and the London Contemporary Orchestra with support from Arts Council England, the London Contemporary Orchestra bring a new dimension to Cunningham’s choice of sounds. With the producer in effect using them as a new instrument, matching his electronic loops with precise manipulation of their acoustic instruments, together they form a heightened kind of chamber music laced with electrostatic interference and DSP nuances. It'll keep existing fans on their toes, which is kinda why we love him!

London Grammar follow up their much lauded debut with their newest outing, 'Truth Is A Beautiful Thing'. Scaling the same emotional highs as the debut but with a much more refined and mature outlook. This young trio skillfully segue from the euphoric orchestral swells and intensely heartfelt vocal gymnastics of 'Rooting For You', through the U2-esque anthemic highs of the soaring majesty of 'Big Picture' through to the robust and richly evocative mid-way point. There are echoes of the spine-chilling instrumental plucks of Daughter's debut on 'Hell To The Liars', moving through to stuttering bass-heavy electronic drums and covert post-dubstep atmospherics on 'Non Believer'.

This is a brilliantly constructed and smoothly produced collection, sweeping through heady instrumental phrases and chillingly evocative vocal passages, rich with melody and swimming with brittle but perfectly constructed walls of sound.

                                                                                                                                                                STAFF COMMENTS

A deft and more than capable follow-up to their much lauded debut.

Upon self-releasing ‘OΔ’ on SoundCloud, London’s diary-like accounts and immediate pop songs wooed both critics and fans alike. His energetic live show atop his one-of-one light cube impressed on both sides of the pond just months after the initial release of the album. His first chapter ‘OATMEAL’, the present and relatable ‘Nobody Hangs Out Anymore’ and the I-hate-everything anthem ‘GUTS’ were instant streaming favourites that all wound up getting play on BBC Radio 1 and American radio stations, while the epic album closer ‘SURVIVE’ found a whole new meaning when a room full of music lovers and industry folk in France sang along in sync with O’Connor mere days after the tragic events at The Bataclan Theatre.

‘OΔ’ (pronounced ‘Circle Triangle’) is a post-any-genre narrative told through vivid and visual production he made from the contents of his backpack while sleeping on floors and couches in New York City. It details the suburban world he grew up in and fled from in Southern California years before. The cinematic album also acts as a rallying cry and arrived hand-in-hand with a direct message from O’Connor: “If when you hear it, you feel like its talking about where you live, then I want you to leave.”

The original version of the album lingers on the internet along with a tweet of his actual cellphone number. The creative direction of London’s body of art and the viscerality of its themes to overcome one’s environment liken the symbol ‘OΔ’ in the eyes of his fans to one perceived like the emblem for the Rebel Alliance.

It cleverly dips in to many different genres while all at the same time retaining a distinctive style. Oh and it’s impossible not to sing along to ‘I hate your gu-uuts’!

Recorded over the band's record breaking five night run at the London Astoria from the 28th February to the 4th March. The album includes their hit singles ‘Girl From Mars’, ‘Goldfinger’ and ‘Kung Fu’, as well as a covers of Abba’s 'Does Your Mother Know’ and Dusty Springfield’s 'I Only Want To Be With You’.

The set captures the raw energy of the band on their homecoming celebration to wrap up the epic year of touring for 1977, which was released the previous year.

The album will be released as a limited edition numbered and coloured vinyl, CD and download via the band’s website, the live shows and select retailers.

The band said "The Ashtoria Five Night Stand was one of the most memorable run of shows for us. It really was the icing on the cake of a manic year since 1977 was released. We'd achieved a number one album followed by a world tour that came close to breaking us. These shows allowed us to look back and celebrate with everyone involved. And it was one hell of an aftershow!"

“These five nights at The Astoria, from February 28th to March 4th 1997, sound and feel like a party. An exuberant, irresistible celebration of a band who, transcending the faddishness of concurrent Britpop, succeeded on that rarest of commodities: raw talent.” - Ian Fortnam, Classic Rock

First time ever on vinyl!!! "Environments" is generally regarded as ‘the great lost album’ by The Future Sound Of London. It has taken on almost mythical status with the group’s fan base. “Environments” was due for release much sooner after the 1993 release of the UK Top 10 album hit “Lifeforms”, and only now is it being released - back on the group’s original home, Jumpin’  & Pumpin’ Records.

This release also comes after the recent success of the ‘Archive’ series which has so far sold over 20,000 units across the different volumes and still climbing.

To re-cap, Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain began their musical partnership and friendship in Manchester, England, in the mid 1980s whilst the two were studying at Manchester University. Dougans had already been making electronic music for some time when they first began working in various local clubs. In 1988, Brian embarked on a project for the Stakker graphics company. The result was Stakker Humanoid. In the following three years the pair produced music under a variety of aliases, followed by the breakthrough classic ambient dub track Papua New Guinea in 1992, which was also the first release under the Future Sound of London moniker.

In conjunction with compiler and highlife researcher Dr. Markus Coester, Soundway Records present a very special release. Double CD and triple 180g gatefold vinyl (with a bonus 7 inch). This 45 includes the two first ever recordings by a certain Fela Ransome Kuti with his band The Highlife Rakers. Recorded by Melodisc in London in 1960 both tracks have been unearthed after more than fifty years in hiding.

In many ways this compilation is a prequel of sorts to Soundway's groundbreaking Nigeria and Ghana Special compilations, telling the early story of modern highlife's foundation and formulation. It traces the music from West Africa to London, adding elements of jazz, mambo and calypso along the way and paving the way for the afro sounds of the 1970s.

Accompanied by a 44 page CD booklet and 12 page vinyl booklet, the notes by Dr. Coester include rare photographs, labels and advert reproductions alongside some stunning and very rare recordings.

The Tyburn Tree - Dark London

Two legends from different worlds collide in what promises to be a seminal album of songs about London.

Composer/saxophonist John Harle and singer Marc Almond collaborate on ‘The Tyburn Tree - Dark London’ - an album of contemporary songs about the darkest sides of London’s history - from the Tyburn gallows to Jack the Ripper, and from settings of the words of William Blake to a unique take on the nursery rhyme ‘London Bridge is Falling Down’.

Following Marc’s much lauded guest appearance on Harle’s ‘Art Music’, this is an album full of driving rhythms, emotional impact and theatrical story telling of the highest order. Along for the ride are noted soprano Sarah Leonard and great London poet and author Iain Sinclair who reads from his own texts. But it is the voice of Marc Almond that is the spiritual medium from which appears the ghosts of ‘Dark London’.

“Marc is a true artist and true performer - showing total openness and vulnerability alongside an experimental, non-judgmental view of Art, and in ‘The Tyburn Tree’, London has found its Anti-Hero”. - John Harle

“We all know that Marc Almond can sing but it still comes as a shock to hear his thrillingly drawn-out climax to Harle’s “The Arrival of Spring”, emoting words adapted from William Blake with operatic oomph.” - The Independent.

‘The Tyburn Tree’ has been in gestation for two years - Almond is the primary lyricist, having researched the subject matter and gradually formed his own take on ‘Dark London’, creating lyrics that have both historical relevance and an ear-catching quirkiness. Alongside this John Harle has been writing music that proves him to be at the height of his powers - after a canon of work that includes his “O Mistress Mine” for Elvis Costello, and as composer of the theme to BBC1’s Silent Witness, he has matched Almond’s lyrics with some punchy, compact and bitter-sweet songs full of emotion, percussive shock and humour. ‘The Tyburn Tree’ promises to be a concept album of cult-status.

Before, the Clash had experimented with reggae, but that was no preparation for the dizzying array of styles on London Calling. There's punk and reggae, but there's also rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock; and while the record isn't tied together by a specific theme, its eclecticism and anthemic punk function as a rallying call. While many of the songs -- particularly "London Calling," "Spanish Bombs," and "The Guns of Brixton" - are explicitly political, by acknowledging no boundaries the music itself is political and revolutionary. But it is also invigorating, rocking harder and with more purpose than most albums, let alone double albums. Over the course of the record, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones (and Paul Simonon, who wrote "The Guns of Brixton") explore their familiar themes of working-class rebellion and antiestablishment rants, but they also tie them in to old rock & roll traditions and myths, whether it's rockabilly greasers or "Stagger Lee," as well as mavericks like doomed actor Montgomery Clift. The result is a stunning statement of purpose and one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever recorded." - Allmusic.

It is some of the earliest notions of Afro-beat. Fela is shaking off the highlife forms that he had been entertaining and moving to a deeper, more simmering groove. It also marks the beginning of a bit of his social commentary. He exhorts his fellow Africans to purchase African goods in "Buy Africa" and puts out a call to the Pan-African counterculture in "J'EHIN J'EHIN" and "Egbe Mi O." What one notices in this section of the album is a stripped-down groove that simmers until Fela finally breaks it out into a fully grown work of funk. In the Shakara section (with some 50 bare-breasted women on the cover helping sell the album), one finds fun (and perhaps shame) pointed at the westernizing African woman in "Lady" (espousing feminism, she believes herself equal to men, and espousing westernism, she takes on a delicate/weak form as a lady). In the title track the fun is poked instead at braggarts who don't back up their bravado. The main focus of this album, though, is to provide a good, danceable groove. This is exactly what Fela does. Pick it up as a landmark and a dance album together, but more importantly as a fan of Fela.

They presently live in Kilburn, North West London, where they travelled to in 2009 from their home near Frankfurt in Germany, literally seeking a new life and an outlet for their music they couldn’t find in their homeland. Lead singer Arthur was an Edwyn Collins fan and they sought him out. Their beautiful songs and harmonic sensibilities so impressed Edwyn and Seb, his studio side-kick, that they recorded an album with the band, and this is their debut single. The album, by the same name, follows in November.

This limited edition Record Store Day 7”. (1000 copies worldwide) pairs indie‐pop virtuosos of Montreal with the Norwegian language electro‐pop/ afrobeat tunesmiths Casiokids. Over the last fifteen years, of Montreal has imitated everyone (86 covers and counting), while developing its own inimitable sound ‐‐ a unique mixture of indie‐pop, glam‐rock, funk, and R&B. Though private and reserved, frontman Kevin Barnes wears his fame like a feathered fedora: on the children's show Yo Gabba Gabba, in collaborations with Spike Jonze, on stage spanking pigs with Susan Sarandon, on horseback in NYC's Roseland Ballroom, and even spontaneously performing six songs nude during a concert in Las Vegas. On this 7” Kevin’s cover of Buffalo Springfield’s classic “Expecting to Fly” is raw and heartfelt. With a bizarre effect created by delay and the honesty of a simple arrangement it is a beautiful take on a great song. Casiokids bring us their new single “London Zoo” which will be included as a bonus track when Moshi Moshi releases their debut reocd “Topp Stemning På Lokal Bar” in the UK. Hailing from the same celebrated Bergen scene that has produced Datarock and Annie, Casiokids were so‐named for the beat‐up old keyboards with which the band members first conceived their club‐ready sound. Formed with the intention of making electronic music more visual, the band has since added guitar and drums to produce a collection of incredibly catchy tunes often sung in their native Norwegian and influenced by afro‐beat, techno and out‐and‐out pop. You may not understand the words but the music speaks for itself.

Recorded live November 9th 1970 at Queen Elizabeth Hall in the South Bank Centre, "Live In London 1970" captures Ra and his many pals in full jazzprov mode. This was Sun Ra's first UK appearance, and he brought along fire eaters, golden robed dancers and 16 musicians. Tornadoes of percussion, eerie cello glissandi, ferocious blasts and tendrils of electronic sound from Ra's Farfisa organ and Moog syth all made this a bit of a free-jazz psychedelic happening. This double CD recording captures it all, if all in a little bit 'cassette recorder from the audience' lo-fi mode.
