      "This is a record I wrote over September and October of last year. The record came together from ideas I knocked about with whilst touring Get Cape. Wear Cape. Fly. At times it has moments of splitter-induced cabin fever and tension, but I like to see it as a record that had a bit too much time to think. I spent a lot of time working with metaphors and parables to try to make sense of the current political climate, and the more time I spent thinking about it, the more confused I got and the more convoluted the songs became. Taking the songs into the studio was a lot of fun. Trying to make head and tail of the sketches was tough at first, Chernobyl doesn't really rhyme with many things. In the end it all went down pretty quick, Me and Jay Malhotra spent a few days trying to capture the late night lucid space of travelling with a bleakness of war. Andy Theakstone (drums) and Jamie Allen (Bass) spent a few days with us at Andy's studio (Unit studios) in Letchworth hammering out the band songs, catching the grooves and adding a bit of well needed release.         May 18th see’s the reissue of Mother Juno, The 1987 album released by The Gun Club. It was produced by Robin Guthrie of the Cocteau Twins. "Yellow Eyes" was originally entitled "Funky Junkie"; "Nobody's City" was originally "Sleepy Times Blues". The original recordings of Mother Juno were released as Mother Berlin in 2015 on Bang! Records containing an additional track,"Country One".

          This is the very last album Jeffrey Lee Pierce recorded in 1994 and probably the darkest record he ever recorded. The most telling track on the album is A House Is Not a Home, an electric scorcher with Pierce telling his, and his band's, life story; by the end they were a band without a country, dismissed in America and met with indifference everywhere else except in the Netherlands.

          Love Is A Basic Need

            20 years into their recording career Embrace are making an epic and emphatic return with their seventh studio album. But no… the London 4-piece Turin Brakes have announced their eighth studio album ‘Invisible Storm’ coming in January 2018 on Cooking Vinyl, followed by a major UK tour. 2016 saw them back lighting up the airwaves with national radio playlisting for three singles from critically acclaimed album ‘Lost Property’ coupled with a packed schedule of touring. Yet all along the way new material kept bubbling through. New songs kept popping up, in soundchecks. Light-bulb moments materialised in midnight sessions in hotel rooms or in any spare moments found. Invisible Storm is big-picture music played on a small screen, refracted through lyrics that embrace the personal and the universal, without offering the comfort of easy answers.                 All This Life

                  Starsailor burst onto the scene in 2001 when their single Fever earned them the title of "Britain's best new band". The band was formed at Wigan and Leigh Music College by music students James Walsh (vocals/guitar), James Stelfox (bass), and Ben Byrne (drums). Later saw the arrival of keyboardist Barry Westhead, who cemented their sound. In April 2000, after seeing their first London show (at the Heavenly Social) the NME wrote: "One live encounter was enough to convince many sceptics that here was a band who were genuinely special, blessed with a singer whose voice thrummed like an emotional telegraph wire, that swerved the pitfalls of indie melancholia and were clearly in love with rock 'n' roll and all its possibilities." Their debut album Love Is Here featuring the Top 10 single Alcoholic, reached Number Two in the UK Album Charts in October 2001, after receiving great critical acclaim and went on to sell over half a million copies in the UK alone.

                  Phil Spector was originally appointed to produce the band's second album, Silence Is Easy. The resulting recording sessions at London's Abbey Road were short-lived. Their collaboration proved to be frustrating, with Spector and the band butting heads on several issues. Only two tracks that Spector produced made the album, Silence Is Easy (another Top 10 single for the band) and White Dove. Starsailor co-produced seven of the other tracks with former Elbow and Doves producer, Danton Supple. John Leckie (The Stone Roses & Radiohead) also produced Shark Food. Silence Is Easy reached Number Two in the UK Album Chart and soon went Gold. The band have enjoyed more than their fair share of prestigious gigs, supporting the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Police, The Killers, and U2, and have sold over 3 million albums worldwide. They decided to take a break in 2009 to explore other projects and now return in 2017 sounding re-energised and with an outstanding new studio album - their fifth ‘All This Life’. The band played a packed Big Top at this year’s Isle Of Wight Festival to an ecstatic crowd and debuted a new track from the forthcoming album. They are also confirmed shows at British Summer Time at Hyde Park alongside Phil Collins, Blondie, New Power Generation and more as well as Hope & Glory Festival in Liverpool.

                  Lover, Beloved: Songs From An Evening With Carson McCullers

                    Carson McCullers was an American novelist, short story writer, playwright, essayist, and poet. Her first novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, explores the spiritual isolation of misfits and outcasts in a small town of the U.S.

                    The album features 10 songs from her upcoming play about the iconic American author Carson McCullers.

                    The play is a one woman show written and staring Suzanne Vega, with songs written by Suzanne Vega and Tony Winner Duncan Sheik.


                    Deap Vally, the Los Angeles duo comprising of Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, return with their new album 'Femejism' Produced by Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it features tracks ranging from experimental prog and kraut-rock to good old- fashioned heart-melters and ball-busters.

                    Deap Vally recently completed major North American tours with Peaches and with Wolfmother during which they aired a number of new songs from the upcoming album live for the first time. 

                    STAFF COMMENTS

                    Barry says: Riding the same line as one of shop favourites Courtney Barnett, Deap Vally form raucous but anthemic rock anthems. Huge raging drum lines and snarling vocals, distorted walls of pummeling riffage and shout-along anthems are the order of the day. That's not to say there isn't a softer side, 'Critic' could easily be Hole's best ever single, had they written it instead. A fantastic return to the fore by Deap Vally, and one that will no doubt keep on giving.

                    D.A.R.K. is an unlikely collaboration between Dolores O’Riordan, Andy Rourke and Olé Koretsky. Dolores, known famously as the singer of The Cranberries, has sold over 40 million albums and also worked with the likes of Angelo Badalamenti and Jah Wobble. Andy Rourke is best known as the inimitable bass player in one of the most important British bands ever, The Smiths - he has also worked with Pretenders, Ian Brown, Sinead O’Connor and Badly Drawn Boy. The third and final member is Olé Koretsky, a little known songwriter, producer and DJ based in New York.

                    The band’s roots lie in a New York DJ-mixing collaboration formed between Andy and Olé, after they met gigging in Washington DC. After a couple of years’ experimentation and laying down tracks in their home studios, a chance meeting between Andy and Dolores resulted in the singer asking him what he was working on. They began sharing tracks and ideas via email and dropbox, building on Andy and Olé’s original demos and, in a couple of instances, Dolores completely re-imagining some of the songs.

                    Science Agrees is a lyrically subtle album that touches on themes of isolation and disconnection, trauma and rebirth (‘Curvy’), drug addiction and love (‘High Fashion’, ‘Underwater’), control (‘Loosen The Noose’), death (‘Steal You Away’), loss of faith and dissatisfaction (‘Gunfight’).

                    The Rifles return with their highly anticipated 5th album 'Big Life'. The new double album contains a remarkable 18 tracks that showcases a new maturity while retaining the indie rock spirit that has become synonymous with the band

                      Bonxie Unplucked EP

                        Though their latest top 20 album, Bonxie, was their most electronic release to date Stornoway are best known (and possibly best loved) for their compelling acoustic performances. Magic is conjured by their use of traditional instrumentation, the Steadman brothers' sibling harmonies; making up the four parts with Jon Ouin and the clear, true, spell of lead singer Brian Briggs' voice.

                        The band's love for wildlife, the outdoors and of course Brian's PhD in Ornithology are at the forefront of their message, underlined by their recent tour of RSPB nature reserves: The Shags and Ducks and Rock 'n' Roll Tour. Combined with Stornoway's passion for playing unplugged shows, it seems completely natural, in every sense of the word, for them to produce a study of Bonxie that takes the listener back to its evolutionary beginnings.

                        The Unplucked EP presents acoustic versions of five songs from Bonxie: Between the Salt Marsh and the Sea, Get Low, Man On Wire, The Road You Didn't Take, Lost Youth and a cover of Yazz's 1988 hit The Only Way Is Up. The songs are stripped of their plumage and their unadorned, skeletal simplicity is revealed. As the band extolled on one of their first ever releases The Battery Human, we need to unplug and "Fix our loose connection out in the natural world wide web".                         The View’s highly anticipated 5th studio album Ropewalk produced by Albert Hammond Jr & Gus Oberg (The Strokes) and mixed by Justin Gerrish (Vampire Weekend) will be released on Cooking Vinyl.

                        Says Kyle Falconer of The View “I would say that this record has really taken us out of our comfort zone. It was a huge compliment having Albert & Gus produce the album and we're really excited with the result.                         No Love Lost (Re-mastered At Abbey Road)

                          To help the lads celebrate 10 years since the birth of the band, Cooking Vinyl Records are pleased to announce the deluxe edition of the band’s debut album, ‘No Love Lost’, digitally re-mastered at Abbey Road Studios.

                          The Rifles have come a long way since their first, self-financed single, ‘Peace & Quiet’, released from their own front rooms in Walthamstow, back in 2005. With consistently respectable chart entries and a huge, loyal fanbase, combined with genuine songwriting talent and unwavering creativity, The Rifles have long outlived many of their original peers.

                          The album announced the band on the UK music scene with great gusto. Fronted by the distinct vocals of Joel Stoker, sharp vocals, quick-witted songs, rolling guitars and a crucial hint of ska made ‘No Love Lost’ the perfect London soundtrack. With Ian Broudie on production duties, the album was initially released on a limited run and has since gone on to become something of a cult classic receiving critical and mainstream success.

                          Indie-folk ensemble Stornoway return with third album Bonxie. For the first time the band enlisted a producer to captain the ship and the man in charge was none other than Gil Norton. Noted for his work with Pixies, Foo Fighters, Twin Atlantic, etc. Gil certainly rocked Stornoway’s world and shook them out of their comfort zones; helping them cut to the chase, sizing up the new songs and shaping them with raptor precision. Joining Gil and Stornoway in the studio was none other than Craig Potter (Elbow) who mixed the track Man on Wire.

                          Whilst Stornoway’s second album ‘Tales From Terra Firma’ was concerned with very personal stories: life’s (and death’s) big questions, Bonxie is far more outward looking. It is infused with a humanistic ideal; a sense of humility and wonderment for the forces of nature, a desire and need for mutual regard and for a respect towards each other and the environment. Each song on Bonxie is a facet of the album which opens up like an origami bird. It is a construction of nature by humans but each song unfolds as a unique species, shape and call.


                          Carl Barât & his new band The Jackals announce the release of their debut album Let It Reign through Cooking Vinyl Records on Monday 16th February.

                          Let It Reign was recorded in LA and London and was produced by Joby J. Ford (The Bronx) and features guest musicians, such as Beastie Boys percussionist Alfredo Ortiz on Glory Days. "I actually started making this record solo, but the long and short of it is I just didn’t like my own company," says Carl, adding that he soon realised that he wanted to get a new band together.

                          Rather than call up some old mates to recruit for The Jackals, Carl decided to post a few ads online asking if there were any likeminded souls out there who wanted to try their luck at playing with him. The response was overwhelming, with thousands of people replying. Carl adds "I was lucky, because I found a bunch of people who genuinely fit together as a gang."

                            ‘None The Wiser’ finds the four-piece on fine form, and marks another raising of the bar. Their trademark Mod and indie pop sound are present and correct, but the band have broadened their musical palette, drawing influence from, “Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, some Clash and as always - the Beatles.”

                            “We’re a live band. That’s where we cut our teeth, that’s where we’re most comfortable, that’s where we have the most fun. That’s where we made our name.” says singer Matt Bowman, For this album the band – having already garnered a reputation as one of the most raucous, thrilling live acts in the UK – have siphoned this rip-roar on-stage energy into their most honest, immediate album yet. This is not a ‘live album’. But it is their most alive…

                            Tooth & Nail was recorded over a whirlwind five-day session with Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry (whose impeccable production credits include Solomon Burke, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint) in his South Pasadena studio. Working with a small band of musicians whose talents had recently appeared on records by the likes of Bon Iver, Lana del Rey and Regina Spektor, the performances have a wonderfully spontaneous feel. The results are, according to Billy, a return to the rootsy sound of 1998’s Mermaid Avenue sessions he recorded with Wilco - drawing on soul, country and folk music influences to explore the ups and downs of relationships that have stood the test of time.

                            Recorded in Berlin over the last few months, The Observer At The Starhouse sparks with a rare magic as Dr Alex Paterson and long-time Orb member Thomas Fehlmann construct a panorama of stripped-down backdrops to provide the perfect backdrops for the Upsetter’s inimitable pronouncements, righteous declarations and sweet vocals.

                            The Orb have long been known for their assimilation of deepest dub into their stratospheric sonic innovations, as evidenced on U.F. Orb’s Towers Of Dub, itself something of a Lee Perry tribute with its sound effects and distinctive underlying eccentricity. Starting in the late 60s with the Upsetters, Perry wrote the book on Jamaican mixing desk trickery, then constantly ripped it up to create new aural blueprints for the music via his Black Ark productions of the following decade, since then charting a waywardly idiosyncratic path which has ensured legions of followers absorbing his every move.

                            Meanwhile, Thomas has been at the forefront of Germany’s electronic music scene since his pioneering avant foraging with Palais Schaumburg in the late 1980s, becoming part of Berlin’s rapidly-evolving techno underground, working with Sun Electric and many of the city’s major artists and operations, including the mighty Kompakt. His immaculate electronic knowledge and intuition now had two disparate lightning rods to bounce between, recalling, “I met Lee for the first time during this session and it was pretty touching to see how an unexpected connection and inspirational exchange could so awaken our creative juices. Alex and I had never made so much new music on the spot before. It was soon pretty clear that we wouldn't get far with the four backing tracks we pre-produced for the session. Lee was so overwhelmingly creative that it took an afternoon for those to be finished. From then on we were forced to come up with new beats on the spot, to keep Lee in the flow.”

                            Scratch’s vocals glide distinctively over bass heavy monsters such as ’Soulman’ and ’Man On The Moon’, the most overt Orb-dub behemoth on the set, while ’Don’t Rush’ takes the ridim form then dismantles it in subterranean sonic catacombs. House grooves inflect ’House Of The Orb’ and ‘Ashes’ while a funky slide bass-line percolates under ’Thirsty’. ’Hold Me Upsetter’ sparkles with lovely bass-string interplay, while ’Congo’ brings in rolling banks of African percussion, many of the tracks beat with the subliminal rasta heartbeat. Both parties rework one of their classics; ‘Police And Thieves’, the track which Perry produced for Junior Murvin in 1976, is turned into a bass-heavy vocal vehicle for the reggae veteran, while The Orb’s ‘Little Fluffy Clouds’ is reshaped as the hallucinogenic dancehall clatter of ‘Golden Clouds’.

                            The mouth-watering prospect of a legendary master working with long-time acolytes who tuned into his unique wavelength long ago blossoms and explodes on The Observer At The Starhouse, which, in the best Scratch and Orb tradition, often takes music where it’s not gone before.

The album is the band’s fourth after the Mercury-nominated #1 debut ‘Hats Off To The Buskers’, the Top 10 follow-up ‘Which Bitch’ and 2011’s Top 20 ‘Bread & Circuses’, and is currently being recorded at Liverpool’s Motor Museum Studios with producer Mike Crossey (Arctic Monkeys, Razorlight, Foals). Early track titles that are vying for inclusion on the album include ’Bunker’, ‘The Clock Has No Sympathy’,’ Anfield Row’ ‘How Long’ and ‘AB’.When asked to describe the album, lead singer/guitarist Kyle Falconer said “its Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours done by The Clash”.

                            The Nightingales

                            No Love Lost

                            Led by singer/lyricist Robert Lloyd ('The most underestimated songwriter of his generation' according to Ben Thompson in the Independent) the latest incarnation of the Nightingales - the best batch yet - release their new album "No Love Lost" on Cooking Vinyl in April 2012.

                            Born out of Birmingham's original punk group The Prefects, the Nightingales have stubbornly ploughed their own furrow in the field of alternative rock n roll for three decades.

                            Described in John Robb's definitive post punk biography 'Death To Trad Rock' as "the misfits' misfits", the band has constantly garnered praise and respect from other artists and received endless glowing press reports, particularly for their live shows.

                            To coincide with the album's release the Nightingales will be touring the UK and mainland Europe. The UK shows follow their May 2011 tour which culminated in a headline performance at the Southbank Centre in London as part of Stewart Lee's Austerity Binge and the Festival Of Britain, which Mojo magazine called "Astonishing" and "Gig of the year".
                            V In addition to the group's own activity there is a Nightingales 'tribute' album planned featuring 'Gales covers by punk and post punk legends (Raincoats, Mekons, Subway Sect, others), young contemporary bands (Art Brut, Lovely Eggs, others), stand up comedians (Stewart Lee, Phill Jupitus) and academic/author Greil Marcus.

                            Released originally in 1982 "Miami" was the follow up album to 1981's debut and critically acclaimed debut "Fire Of Love" album on Ruby records by LA punk blues outfit The Gun Club. "Miami" was produced by Chris Stein of Blondie and released on his label Animal records. Featuring such classics as "The Fire Of Love", "A Devil In The Woods" and a cover of Creedence Clearwater Revivals "Run Through The Jungle" this second release only strengthened The Gun Clubs rise to glory.

                            Released in 1984 "The Las Vegas Story" was possibly the most complete and unrushed Gun Club LP again to be released on Animal records. Produced by Jeff Eyrich this LP saw the band experiment more with covering show tunes like Gershwins "My Mans Gone Now" and a killer take on Pharoah Sanders' "The Creator Has A Master Plan". Yet another raved about LP in the press "The Las Vegas Story" was the icing on the cake in the Gun Club's early career.

                            The highly acclaimed "Death Party E.P." was released originally in 1983 and again was recorded and produced by Chris Stein of Blondie for his record label Animal Records. Featuring a new band line up and recorded in New York and heavy sounding rock monster of a record saw the Gun Club reach new heights with tracks like "The House On Highland Ave" and "Death Party". Notable new band member Jim Duckworth who had just finished his stint with Alex Chilton and Tav Falco's Panther Burns brought a new level of Stooges sounding guitar noise to the band and an extreme white noise blast.

                            It makes sense that the new album from The Lemonheads sounds like a mix tape slipped to you by a music-obsessed friend anxious to turn you on to something new. In fact, the idea for the band's new covers record was inspired by Gibby Haynes, ringmaster of the Butthole Surfers, who for years has made mixes for his longtime friend Evan Dando. 'Making a good mix is an art, and Gibby has it down,' says Dando. 'I thought it would be fun to share these songs with other people like he shared them with me. So I picked the 'greatest hits' from his mixes and covered them, along with a few other songs I always wanted to play.'


                            Grand Duchy, the collaboration between Black Francis and Violet Clark initially started life as a studio experiment. Black Francis explains the formation of the group: 'Once upon a time, Violet and I went into the studio together for a day as an experiment, and we came out that night with Fort Wayne', explains Francis. 'A leaked version seemed to please others, and so we decided to continue the 'experiment'. We decided that, while we were not expert players on all rock ensemble instruments, we would play everything ourselves as we had done on the Fort Wayne session'. 'She was innocent. I hadn't felt innocent for years. She digs the 80s. I had spent the latter part of the 80s doing my part to destroy the 80s. Our second recording session involved a fair amount of shouting and throwing things, much to the horror, I'm sure, of our two engineers Thaddeus Moore and Jason Carter; being pros they just smiled at us'. 'A 'band' truce developed. Over time we threw less objects and began to enjoy our creative tension. We fantasized about the future, about success, as new bands do, and decided during a drive to the studio that we would take any proceeds and make a down payment on a house in Luxembourg (for some strange reason, I can't remember now - perhaps my longstanding obsession with micro states). I guess that's where the name Grand Duchy came from. Maybe that's where we will come from one day. Crossroads of Europe. Near to here and there, but far from Oregon. Cold, grey Oregon'. 'I guess Luxembourg isn't exactly St. Tropez, either. But we could rule our Garage Rock Synth Chick Non-Stop Erotik Poussez-Poussez Dominion from a place like that. Just a little place on the river, in the ravine, in the trees, in the stars. Our pied-de-terre. A place to stop on our way to your European nite klub'.

                            "Brother" with its wonderful insouciant swagger and whiskey soaked lyricism is taken from their third full length album "In Bocca Al Lupo" – their first to be released in the UK. Murder By Death layer the vocal sounds of an old saloon with the haunting strings of a Hungarian folk dance and the hard driving rhythms of pure rock 'n' roll. Added to that thick and intriguing sound are series of dark and ironic lyrics combining the mood and tone of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with the narrative force of The Decemberists or a short story by Nathanial Hawthorne.

                            The songs on this CD were recorded in March 1997 and were included on what has come to be known by Pixies fans as "The Purple Tape." From this collection of 17 songs, eight were chosen to comprise the Pixies' first album, "Come On Pilgrim." The tracks on this CD are the remaining songs, featuring the original version of "Here Comes Your Man", the hard to find "Rock A My Soul" and the studio version of the "Eraserhead" classic "In Heaven". This is where the legend began, and is a must for Pixies fans as well as serious music collectors.

                            The Bert Jansch rehabilitaion was complete by the time these 1998 recordings appeared. The cover showed an older face with the lines on his face eloquently telling the tale of the experiences of one of the most creative musicians of our age and one of the hardest drinking survivors too. Ironically he starts off with a stunning version of a song written by another folk / rock casualty, Jackson C. Frank. "Carnival" is followed by an equally brilliant interpretation of "She Moved Through The Fair".
