Donald Byrd & Gigi Gryce

Jazz Lab - 2024 Reissue

One of the finest groups of the late 50s, the Jazz Lab was co-led by the inimitable horn players Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd. Although the group worked extensively from February to September of 1957 it broke up shortly after. However, all their albums together have become jazz classics, among them the group's first LP, presented here.

"Gigi Gryce and Donald Byrd's innovative, but unfortunately short-lived Jazz Lab Quintet recorded several sides during 1957, seven of which were released on this excellent LP. Jazz Lab makes for an excellent introduction to the hard bop catalogue." - 4.5 STARS AllMusic (Stephen Cook)

      Max Roach

      It's Time - 2023 Reissue

Max Roach came out of the bebop era but was at the forefront of jazz into the 1990s. On It's Time, he takes again the Civil Rights themes of his previous album, Percussion Bitter Sweet, and applies a choir to them, giving his musical and political thrust an almost godly urgency. Here, the musical and the political are impossible to separate and Roach uses these voices to provoke and discomfort us.

The orchestra and chorus were arranged and conducted by composer Coleridge- Taylor Perkinson, and renowned singer Abbey Lincoln is featured on the closing composition, 'Lonesome Lover.' All the compositions are by Max Roach.

Archie Shepp / Bill Dixon Quartet

Archie Shepp / Bill Dixon Quartet

During the period of 1961-1963, saxophonist Archie Shepp and trumpeter Bill Dixon co- led a group that varied in size between a quartet, quintet, and sextet, depending on the gig. However, their only recorded works together consist of the studio quartet album made for Savoy in October 1962, and presented here in its entirety. Both musicians belonged to the avant- garde of free jazz and their celebrity had yet to arrive during the time they worked together.

"After hearing this set, there can be no doubt that the new freedom in jazz is beginning to find direction. Shepp's solos, based on jazz roots, are fascinating, full of wit and convincing. He keeps a listener with him, and he never lets him down. And it simply has not been heard any place before. Listening to Shepp play is experiencing the essence of the 'new thing' and it is very exciting." - **** ½ Bill Mathieu, DownBeat

          Doug Watkins Quintet

          Soulnik

Jazz bassist Doug Watkins died in a car accident in 1962 at the age of 27. However, prior to his early demise, he recorded dozens of wonderful sessions with some of the greatest jazzmen of his time, among them Sonny Rollins, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, and the Horace Silver Quintet. 'Soulnik' marked his second and final album as a leader, and features Watkins on cello instead of bass, and in the company of the great Yusef Lateef.

            Doug Watkins: cello
            Yusef Lateef: flute & oboe
            Hugh Lawson: piano
            Herman Wright: bass
            Lex Humphries: drums
"Bassist Doug Watkins only led two recording sessions before his death in 1962, and this set has sometimes appeared under Yusef Lateef's name. Watkins doubles on cello (an instrument he had reportedly only begun playing three days earlier) during the set with Lateef (who triples on tenor, flute, and oboe), pianist Hugh Lawson, bassist Herman Wright, and drummer Lex Humphries. The use of oboe and cello on some numbers makes the date stand out a bit from the usual hard bop sessions of the period and straight-ahead jazz fans will want to get this album." - Scott Yanow, AllMusic
