Charles Earland

Coming To You Live

“Coming To You Love” is a classic and ever popular jazz funk and soul release from 1980. From its original release, the LP and 12” versions have dominated, this 7” version only recently coming to light as a different take on the track with a bonus Charles Earland organ solo. Since the realization of its existence, the previously styrene only US Columbia 7” has exchanged hands for increasingly higher amounts. Charles came from Philadelphia, played sax first with Jimmy McGriff before turning to organ in the late 60s and earning a nickname ‘The Mighty Burner’ During his time at Mercury records he scored a hit song with the disco record “Let The Music Play”, building an audience with a jazz funk and soul crowd which exists to this day through numerous other releases on Mercury and then Columbia through to his passing in 1999.

Let's get it straight: "This is" is THE album by Ghia. It catches the band at its peak and features 10 songs, including not only their impeccable hit, "What's Your Voodoo?" but a full arsenal of yet unheard, timeless, and soulful music without equal. The songs on the album, which were recorded between 1988 and 1991, could be considered forerunners of the downtempo genre, with one foot in the late 1980s street soul direction but sparkling with touches of synth pop and contemporary jazz-funk. Genre limitations aside, all that Ghia ever wanted to do was create music-good music-and you will hear this in the depth of the compositions.
The album starts with "Keep Your House In Disorder," which has yet again become another classic song from the band's catalog since it was featured as the B-side of the "What's Your Voodoo?" reissue. The song is about a relationship in which the woman has trouble adapting to her boyfriend's turn in life. He tells her to "keep your house in disorder," meaning don't take things too seriously, don't stand still, and you will do better to take the sideroads in life.

"This Is" continues with the downtempo numbers "Crystal Silence" and "Close to You." Both are deep, one-of-a-kind, and previously unissued street soul ballads. On these two tracks, you can still hear the band's roots in jazz-funk. Hence, as a follower of the band's output may have yet recognized, instrumentals of these two tracks can be found on their first LP, "Curaçao Blue." In fact, "Close to You" was one of the band's first compositions. Earlier recordings of the song exist with different singers and different vocals, but it wasn't perfect until Lisa laid down the final version and a choir was added. It's difficult for us to recall any late-80s soul tune as beautiful and intriguing as this one. The final section, which begins with "so much baby we can say," sounds ahead of its time, reminiscent of mid-90s contemporary R&B.

Next up is "Eskimo," an equally brilliant and soulful downtempo composition, but with more focus on synth sounds than the previous tracks. Once more, it showcases the creative lyricism of the song writers, Boberg and Simon, imagining a train ride during a rainy and cold night: "feeling like an Eskimo in an igloo in New York."

Eskimo leads to the aforementioned classic, "What's Your Voodoo?" Originally released in 1991 on the small Mikado label, it was reissued on our label in 2019. We already called this "one of the most wonderful and mystic slow motion synth pop tunes ever recorded"-and we still mean it! Let's face it: this was done before British bands like Massive Attack, Tricky, and Portishead laid the foundation of trip-hop. Dare we call Ghia's music "proto trip-hop"? As a special bonus, the digital version of the LP features a previously unreleased mix of the song, which includes added samples; this should clarify how close Ghia actually was to the sound of the mid-'90s.

"Angel On Your Shoulder" and "L O M E" are two more completely unissued and great tracks from the band's shelved works. Being a bit more uptempo than the rest of the album, they fall between contemporary soul/R&B and synthesized pop music. And of course, another downtempo hit needed to be featured on the album: "You Won't Sleep on My Pillow." It was the original A-side of their single release in 1991, and since then it has been featured on various compilations.

The album concludes with a really strong ballad entitled "I Haven't Got The Power." Here we hear only pianist and keyboardist Lutz Boberg with Lisa Ohm, without further instrumentation. Basically recorded in a live session, this showcases once more the talent and ingenuity within the Ghia project.

Whether you agree or not, "This is" may easily be considered one of the best German late 80s/early 90s soul pop and downtempo albums ever recorded. Cautiously, it may even be submitted as the missing link between mid/late 80s soul by bands such as Sade, and later trip-hop groups like Massive Attack. Let us celebrate Ghia and their music, which had been shelved for more than 30 years but has now finally been released on The Outer Edge.

Star Creature's Italian boogie buffalo Giovanni Damico comes fresh for the label with, I have to say, a pretty tantalizing new sound. Though still rooted in that vintage boogie sound (Linn drums and slap bass a plenty...) "Watch Out" jolts out with a confident urgency. Dazzling keyboard licks, meticulously programmed drums and a frenetic b-line combining perfectly with Damico's empowered vocal. "Nowhere" is a creeping synth disco track, reminiscent of Sylvester's more electronic and sultry numbers. "Night Time" opens with bright synth bursts before dropping into a raw boogie groove littered with space echo detritus. Then the fun loving vocal drops urging you into party mode. "Voodoo" irreverently cruises into full on space disco moods - recalling Arpadys & Sauver Mallia's soaring epics. Finally, "Cowbell (Eeh Aah Eeh)" is a tropical disco flavoured beast that has end-of-night qualities written all over it. Majestic flute, fluttering muted Strat licks, galloping percussion, this baby got it all...

Brilliantly diverse modern boogie flavours for the discerning dancer and jock! Highly recommended!

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: One of my favourite signings of the Star Creature camp, Giovanni Damico can always be relied upon for summat fresh. "Watch Out" takes the boogie template into dazzling new territories - a highly syncopated offering with space-age sfx but with that vintage drum programming and untreated soulful vox that's synonymous with the genre. Sure to be a true classic of the scene that's so far undiscovered.

Across the 12”, the duo’s natural flair for hi-res IDM-tinged electronica is on full display, with four colourful and playful originals that toy with rhythm, harmony and experimentation with an almost flippent confidence.

Repress alert! In the four years since legendary Italian producer alexander Robotnik dropped his Undicidisco ep on hell yeah, it has become a cult classic.

The big room Italo beats have become modern staples and regular fixtures in sets by the likes of Gerd Janson, Peggy Gou, Prins Thomas, Dixon and many others around the globe. Because of this, original 12" versions are highly sought after but rather than paying inflated prices, you can now get your hands on this re-issue.

The original track here dates back to a coast to coast 12” in 2013. It became a big regular tune for the Balearic Gabba Sound System crew back then before the wider scene picked it up and made it into favourite it is now.

'Undicidisco' still sounds wildly original and wonderfully unique today with its trippy melodic leads and chunky drum slaps.

There is also a rugged cosmic mix from Prins Thomas, a raw and unhinged Bawrut version and swirling ambient and downtempo fusion from Irish outfit the vendetta suite to complete this package.

Do not sleep on this Bonafide Balearic bomb.

    Popwave In Dub

New Wave and Dub Reggae are two children of the same generation, separated at birth, and yet now united in triumph: 15 years after his Echo Beach tribute to British pop pioneers "The Police", Dubxanne returns to the roots and infects ten classics of the new wave, post-punk and synth-pop era with the dub-reggae virus. The album is the latest in a loose series of dub sets, with which Echo Beach pays a dubwise tribute to the defining sounds of the "80s. "Fade to Grey", "Running up that Hill", "Video Killed The Radiostar", "Heart of Glass", and more..

      Lloyd Cole And The Commotions

      Easy Pieces - 2023 Reissue

Lloyd Cole & The Commotions – Cole, Blair Cowan, Lawrence Donegan, Neil Clark and Stephen Irvine – were formed in Glasgow in 1982, where Buxton-born singer-songwriter Cole was studying Philosophy and English at the University of Glasgow -Their sound swam against the tide of shiny 80s synthesisers, offering intense, melodic, guitar-based pop, topped with droll words packed with literary references.

Given just how loved debut album Rattlesnakes was, it would have been hard for whatever followed to be received as warmly – yet Easy Pieces made a good first of it. It was to sell twice as many copies in its first two weeks as Rattlesnakes had to date, giving the group a Top 5 chart placing on its release in November 1985. Recorded with 80s super- producers Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley, its first two singles, the brooding, gospel influenced Brand New Friend and the forever-jaunty Lost Weekend reached the UK Top 20.

        The Church

        The Hypnogogue

"Let it first be said that the title track of The Hypnogogue, the first new album from The Church in six years, is one of the most breath-taking singles they’ve released in years, a darkly psychedelic six minutes that slowly spirals into a menacing descent. That alone is reason to keep this one on your radar; the Australian neo-psych band have been going for over 40 years, with around a half dozen classic albums and zero bad ones, yet their ability to keep evolving and uncovering new aspects to their sound and approach only serves as a reminder of how vital they remain after four decades." After an epic return to homeland stages, Australian psych-rock legends The Church announce their forthcoming studio album The Hypnogogue. Following on from 2017’s widely acclaimed Man Woman Life Death Infinity, the Sydney band’s 27th album was recorded just before the world was shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic. Emerging from the darkness is the band’s first new studio album in six years and the first to feature the newest line-up led by founder, bassist and vocalist Steve Kilbey. “The Hypnogogue” is the most prog rock thing we have ever done, we’ve never created a concept album before,” says Kilbey. “It is the most teamwork record we have ever had. Everyone in the band is so justifiably proud of this record and everyone helped to make sure it was as good as it could be. Personally, I think it’s in our top three records.”

Picking up substantial international airplay, raising anticipation for the album’s release, the digital singles ‘The Hypnogogue’ and ‘C’est La Vie’ set the stage for the album’s striking science fiction narrative. Kilbey unpacks the themes that tie the album together: “The Hypnogogue is set in 2054, a dystopian and broken-down future. Invented by Sun Kim Jong, a North Korean scientist and occult dabbler, it is a machine and a process that pulls music straight off dreams.” This new five-piece line-up is made up of Kilbey along with long-time collaborator, drummer and producer Tim Powles, who’s remained a staple across 17 albums since 1994. Joining them is guitarist Ian Haug, formerly of Australian rock icons Powderfinger, who has been with the band since 2013. Touring multi-instrumentalist talent Jeffrey Cain is now a full-time member since the departure of Peter Koppes in early 2020. Completing the line-up, newcomer Ashley Naylor is one of Australia’s finest guitarists and a long-time member of Paul Kelly’s touring band.Formed in 1980, The Church found early chart success in their homeland, before establishing themselves as an international touring entity, earning a worldwide hit with the single ‘Under The Milky Way’ from their hit 1988 album Starfish, while their stellar live shows have been deemed ‘spectacular’ by MAGNET magazine and continue to win the hearts of industry and fans across the world.Often seen as the Godfathers of an Australian psych/prog scene generating such internationally successful names as Tame Impala and King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, The Church have gone on to maintain a loyal and far-reaching following as their fanbase has expanded with their evolving sound. Entering their fourth decade as a band, The Church continue to remain a treasured creative force.

          Bell Orchestre

As Seen Through Windows - 2023 Reissue

Erased Tapes are thrilled to announce the reissue of Bell Orchestre second album As Seen Through Windows out on April 28th.

Bell Orchestre is a collaborative instrumental group based in Montreal. Whose six members come from wildly divergent musical backgrounds, and the unlikely chemistry that results from their collaboration is the very thing that sustains their connection. It’s as if the group as a whole has tapped into a very particular, very distinct energy: like that of an approaching storm. In many ways, Bell Orchestre is the sum of not only its parts but the sum of its influences and inspirations

Expanding further on the foundation that Recording a Tape the Colour of the Light laid, the group refined and tightened their sound on this masterpiece.

Bell Orchestre retreated to Banff Centre in the rocky mountains of Alberta to write the follow-up to their debut album. The title As Seen Through Windows is inspired by the rehearsal space where it was written. The room had two exterior walls entirely made of windows, and with the cinematic view of the mountains they saw occasional herds of elks and deer’s passing by.

The specifics of time and place, the elemental forces at work outside, and those forces that exist inside, all come into play within Bell Orchestre’s musical process. This particular music could be made by no one else at no other time in history.

The album was produced by John McEntire (Stereolab, Jeff Parker), drummer and producer of the legendary Chicago post-rock band Tortoise. McEntire had been the group’s dream producer to work with. “I think I was more starstruck around John McEntire than I’d been around anyone before,” says violinist Sarah Neufeld. McEntire was up for trying anything in the studio, and inspired the band endlessly.

Now looking back at the recording sessions, lap steel guitarist Michael Feuerstack remembers “I don’t know how aware we were of the uniqueness of our bond and the resulting methods of music making, but they are very evident across this recording.”

Following the original release, they went on to tour the world, from festivals and theatres to small venues.

            Autobahn

            Ecstasy Of Ruin

Reports of their demise have been greatly exaggerated - the North has risen again. Close to five years since their last record, Leeds denizens AUTOBAHN re-enter the fray with the release of their third record, Ecstasy of Ruin via Tough Love. Half a decade is both a long time and no time at all: forever changes while some things remain eternal… So it goes that AUTOBAHN may have re-emerged with many of the hallmarks of their characteristic blend of industrial post-punk intact, but under the bonnet they’re a much leaner, more focused machine. AUTOBAHN 3.0.

If 2017’s The Moral Crossing was a record defined by its dramatic rhythm section, then it’s not insignificant that the 2023 incarnation of AUTOBAHN arrives shaved to a four piece and sans their previous drummer. The change necessitates an evolution. Live drums have given way to drum-machines and sample-based percussion, and with it see the band reconfigure their typically blackened aesthetic into a hardened take on Electronic Body Music. As with their previous record, it’s an entirely self-produced collection, recorded between two self-built studios on a range of analogue equipment, the ghosts of their industrial forefathers haunting the circuits. Indeed, some of Ecstasy of Ruin was made with pieces salvaged from Martin Hannett’s legendary studio. The mark of their presence is clear and AUTOBAHN certainly feel part of the long tradition of crepuscular music to emanate from Northern Britain, be that the transgressive activities of COUM Transmissions from Hull, Sheffield Steel City or the gothic history of their very own hometown. It’s a noble torch they carry.

Still, if Ecstasy of Ruin forms part of a rich lineage, it also speaks to right now. No album opens with a song titled ‘Post-History’ and closes with another called ‘Class War’ without some concession to the current condition and its place within it. Industrial music by its very nature is a physical concern, often placing the human body and its experience in the context of technology, reflecting the varying trevails of late capitalism. AUTOBAHN strive towards some kind of articulation of that conflict. The music is unrelentingly taut and terse, and the vocals of frontman Craig Johnson are invariably intense, though lyrically there are repeated allusions to beauty, empowerment and, ostensibly, hope. As such, the title of the album is an instructive one - there’s some kind of bliss in all this mess. AUTOBAHN don’t so much push against the pain as ride it out to its (il)logical ends. As Johnson implores on the title track, “focus on living, the pain wont be forgotten”. It’s a relatable sentiment.

              Indigo De Souza

              All Of This Will End

Indigo De Souza announces her new album All of This Will End, the anticipated follow-up to her acclaimed 2021 breakthrough album Any Shape You Take. All of This Will End marks a warmer and unmistakably audacious era for her. It’s a statement about fearlessly moving forward from the past into a gratitude-filled present, feeling it all every step of the way, and choosing to embody loving awareness.

Across 11 songs, the album is a raw and radically optimistic work that grapples with mortality, the rejuvenation that community brings, and the importance of centering yourself now. These tracks come from the most resonant moments of her life: childhood memories, collecting herself in parking lots, the ecstatic trips spent wandering the Appalachian mountains and southern swamps with friends, and the times she had to stand up for herself. “All of This Will End feels more true to me than anything ever has,” she says.

                The Chemical Brothers

                No Reason

Tom n Ed, possibly one of the UK's most influential and successful electronic music outfits, return with a brand new single: "No Reason". Featuring a bleak lyrical hook (provided by a vocal sample from Second Layer's "Courts Or War") - 'we have no reason to live / no reason at all / when will they kill us all' - the track's poignantly gloomy outlook is juxtaposed by one of their typically galvanized grooves - pairing up a punchy B-line with nuevo-disco drums, the odd vocal whoop and darting synth stabs. Add a lashing 303 and military snare rolls which allude to its shadowy war-mongering. It's stadium friendly, with soaring breakdowns and full fat processing; and has been going down a storm at their live shows for the past year or so.

As much as dance music is about hedonism and escapism, there's always been a political and social commentary underlining the best bits. The Chems perfectly balance energy release with wry contemplation on a track that is destined to become a global hit.

On the flip, they pop the cork off the dance tent, firing off sharp acid lines, precision beats and head-splitting reversals - layering up the incessant percussion lines for a fiery and frothy techno steam train that'll have everyone sweating and gasping for breath. Festival season better be ready!

                STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Nihilistic in vocal content, with clever sampling of Second Layer (me neither) - The Chemical Brothers deliver a stadium slaying hit which still has summery connotations whilst biting hard at the jugular. Always the same, always different!

remastered for 2023 - this remix package features the full 9 min 44 sec trance journey by Tiësto & the equally dazzling Gabriel & Dresden remix, both of which have seen their stocks rise inline with the recent upinterest in trance; meaning 2nd copies fetch quite the pretty penny.

Originally released as a double A side with "Ready Steady Go", it peaked at No. 16 in the UK chart. It was taken from 1M worldwide selling album "Bunkka" which was released the following month (and is also reissued alongside this single). Featuring vocals by Carla Werner, the original version and various remixes have been included on over 70 compilation albums.

Tiësto's remix is an absolute beast of a track. Pulsating and rippling with various arps and leads, it epitomizes the long form trance epic - with a detailed and adventurous arrangement which constantly reveals more tantalizing hooks and endorphin-rushing greatness, the soaring vocal only surfacing towards the second half of the track.

Gabriel & Dresden's remix contrasts jagged, hard-edge bass notes with an eerie mood and squishy background breaks. The vocal emerges early, guiding the track alongside an almost live bassline. If anything is accentuates the pop-like sensibilities of the track; with the focus on that vocal part; but the production surrounding it is nothing short of breaktaking, even some 20 years later.

Kid Congo Powers & The Near Death Experience

                  Live In St. Kilda

Live In St. Kilda is a twelve song live album from a one-time-only show in which Kid Congo Powers was backed by The Near Death Experience. Kid Congo says, “How did I hook up with The Near Death Experience you may ask? One fine day Kim Salmon, my long time Scientists Surrealist Beast of a friend, wrote from Australia to ask me to play at his book launch for his biography Nine Parts Water, One Part Sand: Kim Salmon And The Formula For Grunge on November 9th, 2019. The launch was to take place at the Memo Music Hall in St. Kilda, a seaside suburb of Melbourne. A royal command performance for the king of Kim? How could I say no to such an honor? What to do about a band? It did not take more than a minute for each of us to suggest Harry Howard and The Near Death Experience as the logical choice. I was a massive fan of the band already and we shared crossed paths as expats claiming out our musical in 1980s London. Harry with Crime And The City Solution and These Immortal Souls, Dave and Clare with The Moodists, Kim with the Scientists and me with Gun Club and Fur Bible. Needless to say it was fantastical to get together and make a playlist for Kim featuring covers by Suicide and Shangri La, with mine and NDE’s songs as well. The night was magic—I still am floating on a surrealistic pillow remembering the night. Enjoy the racket, enjoy the love, enjoy this record of friendship and celebration.”

Barry says: Snapping garage percussion and screaming guitars lay the foundation for Kid Kongo Powers' unmistakeable vocals and scathing live show. Featuring the Near Death Experience members instead of the usual Pink Monkey Birds has lent his sound an even more raw edge, accentuated by the live setting. Hefty.

                    DJ Kicks: Elkka

Elkka’s deep intuition is the unifying thread throughout Cardiff-born DJ and producer’s illustrious career. Vibrant releases for Local Action, Ninja Tune and her own label and party, femme culture, have marked her as an unstoppable force within the London underground. This recognition metabolised when she was awarded BBC’s prestigious Essential Mix of the Year in 2021, spotlighting her radiant blend of classic house, breakbeat and experimental electronica to the world over.

As the next curator of DJ-Kicks, Elkka is voyaging through rave euphoria. “This is a really special moment for me because DJ-Kicks has been a formative part of my musical education,” she says. An intoxicating journey through Chicago house and disco, leftfield techno, UK bass and electro-punk, Elkka conjures up an atmosphere that is as primed for the club as it is the listener’s interior world.

Delving into the deepest recesses of raï, this compilation serves as a tribute to its roaring years, but also as a rejuvenation of the genre in its sulphurous, subterranean version.

Through the pre and post-independence years, from 1950 to 1970, raï urbanised itself, with a generation listening to the traditional sounds, but also and mostly listening to twist, French variété and rock music. Including 6-page booklet with liner notes in French and English and download code.

Limited edition yellow vinyl of The Adicts’ fourth studio album. Released on RSD2023.

Not since the 1980’s has this album been available on vinyl!
Now with a new inner bag, lyrics and a previously unseen colour photo session.

The Adicts came from Ipswich on the east coast of England, dressed in white in an amalgam of The Joker and Clockwork Orange imagery. Their previous two LPs had made a big impact in the UK, with singles entering the lower reaches of the national charts on Sire Records – (who insisted they change their provocative punky name to ADX or The Fun Adicts when on children's TV!).

This 12" single by post rock legends Bark Psychosis, is a beautifully haunting masterpiece, with an incredibly cool sleeve to accompany. Improvised and recorded live in the band's home of St John's Church in 1992, SCUM experimented with the use of space and extreme dynamics, with music that varied between minimal jazzy chording, airy acoustic drums, clamorous noise guitar, space-ambience and random vocal snippets. You can hear why the band have been credited as genre defining. Now a complete reinvention of the original 1992 release on 3rd Stone Records, and the first ever release on Rolling Heads. With updated artwork true to the original, SCUM has been fully remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell, with the help of frontman Graham Sutton. It will be pressed in 180g heavyweight black vinyl, and packaged in luxury 300gsm card sleeve, boasting something a little different to the original. This is a beautiful must listen release.

An instrumental edition of the critically acclaimed 2022 album, FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE written and produced by Brian Eno
“Heartbreaking songs shot through with wonder…. these songs feel personal, intimate and urgent.” ****, The Observer
“FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE is not a ‘protest album’, Eno insists, but rather, a necessarily sombre meditation on a world that is “changing at a super-rapid rate….large parts of it are disappearing for ever.” As such, it is as timely as it is sobering and, in places, austerely, compellingly beautiful.” - ****, Mojo
“‘FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE’ is nostalgic, melancholic, hopeful and hopeless, existentialist and nihilist. Brian Eno is one of the few artists who is able to convey the things he does by using so little, and ‘FOREVER’ is a prime example of his mastery.” - 9/10 CLASH
“It’s a safe musical harbor from the hustle and bustle of everyday life that serves, like a cathedral, to draw us out of the mundane and into the realm of the transcendent.” - Riff
“FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE was personal, intimate and vital” - #9: Albums of the Year, Uncut Magazine

The E.A.R. debut project, Mesmerised, is a total collage of drones, tones, and endless atmospheric washes that becomes a logical extension of earlier works into realms of psychedelic haze. This mysterious and beautiful sound is a complete exploration into 90ís post/space rock. Only released on vinyl once in 1994, this RSD 2023 release has been created to exactly replicate the Space Age Recordings release from 2009. Working with Pete Kember, and keeping an environmentally conscious mind. This superb release will look as good as it sounds. Transparent red vinyl, inside a clear acetate bag with concentric circles and the EAR logo printed direct to it (plus barcode, track list etc). A very special release and one sure to get the collectors buzzing.

First global vinyl pressing for Marianne Faithfull’s final album for Island records. 1995’s ‘A Secret Life’ received its only vinyl issue in Greece, and copies are hard to come by with collectors now expected to pay anywhere between £50 and £200 for a copy.

The album was a new direction for Marianne and was written with the Italian composer Angelo Badalamenti, known for his atmospheric scores to David Lynch’s films. The result successfully marries his multi-layered orchestral production style with Marianne’s trademark voice and poetic lyrics to create a wholly original and timeless album.

Marianne’s other 90's albums ‘20th Century Blues’ and ‘Vagabond Ways’ have recently appeared on vinyl, so this could join the dots for collectors.

                                                          • Album never pressed on vinyl outside of Greece

                                                          • Greek second hand copies sell for between £50-£100

                                                          • One of Marianne's most original collaborations essentially available on vinyl for the first time.

Darren Hayman's 2012 classic LP "Lido" gets the deluxe reissue treatment this record store day - an all-new 12" transparent vinyl with a 16 page 12x12" book of Darren's Lido artwork. As was the original, this is a joint release between Clay Pipe and wiaiwya. I was thinking about instrumental music and whether it could truly be about something. I was thinking about how classical, jazz and the avant-garde often group music together under conceptual titles and themes. Isnít a lot of this music about music itself? Isn't instrumental music literally about the unspeakable, the indescribable? My friend Dave says that he see no reason why wordless music should be any less about ësomethingí then lyrics or prose. I think he's right, but I also know that some music that is titled and thematically labelled is nothing more than the beautiful sound of a musician trying to reach out; to evoke; to remember. My name is Darren Hayman and I have made an instrumental album about Britainís open air swimming pools; it's called 'Lido'. If I am known or liked for anything at all in my career then it is for my lyrics. I see words as incisive, accurate tools, when used correctly. I donít want my words to paint vague canvasses; I want them to make detailed, forensic technical drawings. I am interested in specifics; my songs thus far have very much been about stuff. In my own listening, however, I have moved more and more towards instrumental music. I enjoy the heavenly fog of the ECM label. I love following the unpredictability of John Coltrane's reckless career. I adore roots dub reggae - it makes me feel safe and calm. Instrumental music has given me something that has been missing from my listening for a few years. It confuses, frustrates and excites me, and in no way do I feel it a less erudite companion to lyrical music. The opposite is true, in fact: this music can often say more, I just love not being able to define what it is. Cautiously, over the last few years, I started to amass recordings of my instrumental compositions. When I had five that I thought were good, I needed a title that might pull these sunny, open tunes together; I thought of 'Lido'. From that point onwards I tried to think about what it would be to write music with a specific setting in mind. I tried to write the tunes in my head, while visiting the individual pools. I collected field recordings and buried them inside the songs. Some were audible but I wanted to link the music to the place in some way. When it came to writing tunes about closed or destroyed lidos, I thought about absence and nothingness. I thought about disconnected music; tunes without formal structure or time signatures. I have not re-invented the wheel but this was a truly experimental record for me in that I devised routines and procedures that produced music alien to me. I thought hard about Brentwood Lido, in my hometown. It closed in 1976, when I was just five. It is one of those places that have slipped past the internet. I can find only two grey, fuzzy pictures online. Do you have any pictures of it? Iíd love to see them. My own memory of the place is also fuzzy: one of those early childhood memories that seems to be projected onto sunlight. If you think hard or try to grasp it in any way then it just melts. I can see a towel; there is a low wall or steps maybe? My mother is there some other people... It's sunny but then there's nothing there's no focus or clarity to the memory. If instrumental music can be about anything then surely it can be about this feeling; the sensation of fumbling, desperately, in the back of your mind. Looking for something beautiful that you know was there once. I wanted to make music that sounded half remembered but purposeful. I went to the road where the pool used to be. I recorded nothing but the faint rumble of traffic and put in my tune. My album 'Lido' is about open air swimming pools and something else as well. It's just impossible to say what it is exactly. - Darren Hayman February 2012. Track Listing: 1. London Fields 2. Black Rock Baths 3. Brockwell Park 4. Parliament Hill 5. Saltdean 6. The Knap 7. Factory Benelux presents a limited edition 180gm vinyl singles collection by Marcel King, best known for his sparkling 1984 dance single ‘Reach For Love’ on Factory Records, as well as the youthful vocalist on ‘Sad Sweet Dreamer’ by Sweet Sensation, a UK number one back in 1974

Limited to just 1000 copies, Reach For Love: Singles 1983-88 features both sides of the infectious electro single co-produced by Bernard Sumner (New Order) and Donald Johnson (A Certain Ratio) and released as Fac 92 in April 1984, as well as a previously unreleased demo for ‘Love To Shine’, the planned follow-up single on Factory produced by Tony Henry of 52nd Street. (NON-RETURNABLE)

The album also features ‘Hollywood Nights’, a later single cut by Marcel with Gee Bello of Light of the World, along with a rare US remix of ‘Reach For Love’ by noted New York DJ Mark Kamins, and extended dub and instrumental versions.

King was invited to record for Factory in 1983 by Joy Division/New Order manager Rob Gretton, a devotee of soul and black music, and prime mover behind the famous Hacienda nightclub. ‘Rob was a massive fan of Marcel and thought he was as good a singer as Michael Jackson,’ explains Tony Henry. Not just a gifted and plaintive soul singer, King also wrote both sides of his Factory single, ‘Reach For Love’ and ‘Keep On Dancin’, both paeans to perseverance and enduring Hacienda classics.

A classic video clip for the single, filmed at The Hacienda with local breakdancing crews, is available in YouTube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-h7X3z8JghY

Alas ‘Reach For Love’ was destined to remain an underground hit rather than a chart topper. Rob Gretton blamed Factory’s disdain for conventional promotion. ‘At Factory we still basically believe that you don’t have to hype a group in any way, and that a record should success on its own. But it’s getting increasingly difficult. We put a record out by Marcel King and it’s hardly sold at all. The charts are wide open to hyping and marketing.’

Adds Bernard Sumner: ‘Marcel was an incredibly talented guy, but a tragic figure. He used to sleep in a car in Moss Side and was a bad heroin addict.’ A troubled but pioneering artist, Marcel sadly passed away in 1995 after suffering a brain haemorrhage.

1000 copies only of FBN 47 will be available on Record Store Day on 22 April 2023, pressed on 180gm black vinyl. The sleeve is based on original artwork for the Factory single and also includes a press interview with Marcel from 1984.

Formed in Chester in 1994, the band wrote & released a collection of songs before the album sessions, released on CD/7-inch vinyl leading up to their debut album. Now, for the first time, these pre- Grey Lantern tracks has been compiled on this essential album - 'Before The Grey Lantern'.

THE MARCH VIOLETS came out of Leeds in the early 80’s, label-mates of Sisters of Mercy. Constantly at the heights of the UK indie singles charts, the singles became the foundation of LP compilations in the UK and USA. Signing to a major, they featured in the John Hughes’ Some Kind of Wonderful movie with two songs, but split up before an album was completed.

Twenty-five years later they reformed, touring the UK and USA, and at last completed their first album, Made Glorious along with a video of ‘Dandelion King’ via a well over-subscribed Pledge Music campaign in 2013. Fans got access to a very limited CD and download, but sadly various events conspired to stop a planned vinyl production. Here at last is the long-awaited ‘difficult first album’ on vinyl from The March Violets!

It is one of his most ethereal scores, with a sweet and delicate theme unfolding in a lullaby to the rhythm of a valzer. Think lounge-jazz to experimental music. The final result is a sensual and suave sound that matches the quintessential morbid style of Giallo cinema

This 180-gram double set features 18 selections from Charlie Parker, one of jazz's greatest saxophonists. All the recordings were captured in the late 1940s and early '50s at such storied venues as Carnegie Hall and Birdland in New York, The Jubilee in Los Angeles, and the Portland Civic Auditorium. Focused on experiments in Afro-Cuban fusion, Parker is joined by a dazzling array of jazz legends including Dizzy Gillespie, Milt Jackson, Art Blakey, Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Red Rodney, and others. The track listing matches the cast of musicians; classics 'Cherokee' and 'A Night in Tunisia' are captured in pristine form, while maintaining the intimate jazz spontaneity of Parker's best recordings. The package includes an essay by rock keyboardist Keith Emerson. While these tracks have previously appeared on other albums, this is the first time they have been gathered in this package on double 180-gram vinyl.

With faithfully recreated original sleeve and extensive notes, all created in collaboration with the Tom Rapp Estate. The psychedelic-folk debut from "one of the most erudite, literate minds in rock" a stunning piece of work, from the nightmarish sleeve art - the "Hell Panel" from Hieronymus Bosch's 15th century painting "Garden Of Delights" - to the strange yet powerful songs." AllMusic. "From moody, poetic gems to the anger and intensity of the bitter anti-war anthem, "Uncle John". Fiercely unique and individual sounding." Goldmine. "A high of psychedelic delicacy and deceptive urgency, one of his masterpieces." Rolling Stone.

With a faithfully recreated original sleeve and extensive notes, produced in collaboration with the Tom Rapp Estate. "The near-brilliant follow-up intended as a defiant condemnation of the Vietnam War, it doesn't offer anthemic, fist-pounding protest songs. Instead, Tom Rapp vented his anger through surrealist poetry, irony, and historical reference." AllMusic. "A high point in his recorded output." Goldmine. "A high of psychedelic delicacy and deceptive urgency, one of his masterpieces." Rolling Stone.

Poison Girls "Hex" was first recorded and released in 1979. The recordings were produced by Penny Rimbaud and the band was led by vocalist Vi Subversa. Poison Girls came up on the punk wave, but Vi was obviously not your typical frontwoman. She was a 44-year-old mother, singing about life as a single parent. A unique and powerful voice both then and now. The album was recorded live in the studio, with precious few overdubs. This creates an immediacy and urgency to the performances. It bristles with the energy of anger, paranoia, hopelessness, helplessness, mental fragility and full-on anguish. Vi Subversa took no prisoners. The stunning gatefold sleeve contains new insightful liner notes by founding guitarist Richard Famous. In addition, an insert is included with complete song lyrics and rare archival band photos overseen by the Poison Girls bass player, Bernhardt Rebours. This vinyl format of ëHexí is a 2023 Record Store Day exclusive. It is an 8 song 12ì LP, to be played at 45 RPM, and pressed on Blood Red vinyl. This record, from 1979, was streets ahead of its time. Is it as important and relevant to 2023 as it was then? Listen and learn. (btw, the answer is yes)

POLIÇA, founded by vocalist Channy Leaneagh and producer Ryan Olson out of the ashes of Minneapolis collective Gayngs, and featuring Drew Christopherson, and Ben Ivascu on drums and Chris Bierden on bass, came seemingly from nowhere with their debut ‘Give You The Ghost’, released in April 2012 and which became one of that year’s most beloved albums.

Born out of a tumultuous, head spinning subsequent 18 months POLIÇA released their second album Shulamith in October 2013, the album named in homage to pioneering feminist activist and thinker Shulamith Firestone with cover banned by Apple and hit singles including “Chain My Name” and the Justin Vernon featuring “Tiff”.

Musically, ‘Shulamith’ demonstrated an increased mastery and extension of the unique sonic palette that POLIÇA mined on their debut album. The recording process was naturally a more collaborative process than their debut, with the band reacting to and working off Olsen’s beats, drawing on elements of R&B, electronica and dub to create a sound that, already, this early in their career, is uniquely and identifiably their own. Leaneagh’s continued exploration of, and increased control over the effects processor to manipulate and enhance her already outstanding voice take her vocals to new and unusual heights.

'Shulamith' reaffirmed POLIÇA as one of the most fascinating and vital groups in forward-thinking pop. Ultimately, Channy succinctly summed up the ideas and themes behind ‘Shulamith’, and POLIÇA as follows: “Drums. Bass. Synths. Me, Women”.

2023 marks 10 years since the release of 'Shulamith' and this double LP edition comes on blue opaque vinyl.

This is why they can record a perfect pulse drone backwash like 'another sky' and equally why legions of allegedly cutting edge bands will rip off and run out with a diluted version within the next year. this is why 'household objective#2' is the coolest and scariest piece of electronica to surface since the BBC's radiophonic workshop got dr who off to a flier. the telescopes light a torch under the arse of a depressingly homogenized world, but don't follow theirs, light your own, it's what they'd prefer. The album draws upon the extensive links between black American gospel music and soul music, showing how the sensibilities of gospel artists such as Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Norwood, Andraé Crouch and others crossed over into secular soul music during this period.

Many of the most successful soul artists – from Aretha Franklin to Al Green, The Staple Singers to Sam Cooke – all drew upon their upbringing in the church for their musical inspiration. This album discusses how important the links between the black church and soul music were in creating soul music and spotlights some of the many important (and also little-known) gospel artists who walked this line between sacred music and soul, funk and disco in the 1970s and early 1980s.

Holy Church of the Ecstatic Soul shows how sacred gospel music was at home with Stevie Wonder, Blaxploitation-style funk and produced music celebrated both in New York’s underground discos (The Paradise Garage, Studio 54, etc) and later sampled by the likes of Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg and Mary J Blige.

                                                                                                                                                          TRACK LISTING

April 27th marks the 5th Anniversary of Janelle Monae’s third studio album Dirty Computer. This album was the first album that did not continue the Cindi Mayweather Metropolis narrative that she was known for early in her career, although it's been hypothesized that the album serves as a prequel. The album received universal critical acclaim upon release; it was included in the top three of seven publications' Best Album of 2018 lists and received two nominations at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.

A leap of faith reaps extraordinary rewards on ‘Black Bay’, an album of depth, atmosphere and daring from the collective known as Silver Moth. Recorded under unusual circumstances, ‘Black Bay’ is the sound of seven storied musicians yielding to shared goals, a policy of trust in action. Between hushed incantations and molten guitars, 15-minute noise-rock epics and healing psalms, the record is a testament to connectivity and receptivity: to a union of disparate minds committing to something greater than the sum of its parts.

Stuart Braithwaite of Mogwai, Elisabeth Elektra, Evi Vine, Steven Hill, members of Abrasive Trees, Burning House and Prosthetic Head convened to improvise the album in early 2021, inspired by a Twitter exchange between Abrasive Trees guitarist/songwriter Matthew Rochford, musician Elisabeth Elektra and fellow artist Nick Hudson about the Isle of Lewis. A couple of Zoom meetings would subsequently lead to Rochford, Elektra, Vine, Braithwaite, Hill, drummer Ash Babb and cellist Ben Roberts visiting the dramatic location of Great Bernera’s Black Bay Studios on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, where they tracked the songs in just four days: a testament to the musicians’ focused openness to their shared mission and environment.

This is an album of elemental force and evocative poise, its controlled power focused around the ego-free chemistry between the players. By abandoning all certainties, Silver Moth have found something truly special on ‘Black Bay’.

As some of you may know, Alice Coltrane was a legendary pianist, composer, spiritual leader, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, four years after meeting John, he died of liver cancer, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate, Alice suffered sleepless nights and severe weight loss. At her worst, she weighed only 95 pounds. She had hallucinations in which trees spoke, various beings existed on astral planes, and the sounds of “a planetary ether” spun through her brain, knocking her into a frightening unconsciousness.

The critical event of this period was not that Alice fell into the nadir of her existence, but rather that she experienced tapas, a vital period of trial. These tapas (a Sanskrit term she used to describe her suffering) helped prepare Alice for the spiritual ally she found in Swami Satchidananda, an Indian guru, with whom Alice made her first trip to India. On her second trip there, Alice had a revelation instructing her to abandon the secular life and become a spiritual teacher in the Hindu tradition – so she moved out West – eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram on 47 acres she’d bought in Agoura Hills, California.

Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice. From the mid 1980’s to mid 1990’s, Alice Coltrane self-released four brilliant cassette albums. These cassettes contained a music she invented, inspired by the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed together with the Indian devotional music of her religious practice, and even finds Alice singing for the first time in her recorded catalog. Originally only made available through her ashram, they are her most obscure body of work and possibly the greatest reflection of her soul.

The album delivers super tasty, dirty guitars, serpentine psychedelic grooves, and propulsive drumming with gleeful abandon. Guitarist Dan ‘Sig’ Wilson switches from explosive to expansive on a knife’s edge, laying down wailing hooks before evaporating into bristling fuzz. Bassist Brian Markham and drummer Adam Bulgasem (Black Mountain)’s foundations play with time, galloping forward or stretching out into the cosmos. ‘Wished Eye’ is an expression of the sheer joy of making music together.

Their debut single was a stark jazz-folk cover of Cole Porter's Night and Day.

Acclaimed for their tender-tough lyrics, Thorn’s unique voice and Watt’s arrangements, they released a string of UK gold albums throughout the 1980s experimenting with jazz, guitar pop, orchestral wall-of-sound and drum-machine soul.

In the 1990 they released three albums, Amplified Heart, Walking Wounded and Temperamental, which gained them huge critical acclaim and commercial success. Then in 2000 they chose to quit. Tracey focused on family life away from the spotlight before returning with a run of solo albums and best-selling autobiographical books. Ben moved into DJing and remixing, and launched the respected electronic label, Buzzin' Fly. He returned to his singer-songwriter roots with a trilogy of solo albums from 2014-2020.

Now at last, the duo return with their new LP, which sees Tracey’s distinctive dolorous vocals topping their downtempo grooves. And as you’d expect, the songwriting is exemplary. Some, 20 years on, it feels like a natural progression from their ‘90s sound, filtered through the uncertainty and confusion of the intervening years.

In 2020, they released their sixth album - Nothing Is True & Everything Is Possible - which also gave them their sixth album to debut in the UK Album Chart top 5. Frequently collecting Best Live Artist awards, Enter Shikari’s seventeen-year career thus far has seen them rise from teenagers touring the UK grassroots venues, to festival main stages and arena headliners worldwide.

It was in the Spring of 2022 that the band descended to the coastal town of Chichester, and a delipidated farmhouse, to rebuild their studio setup and capture their renewed momentum on record. Using only solar power to track the album–in what Reynolds says was to “bring back some sense of naivety” – the life-giving properties and Technicolor palate of A Kiss For The Whole World were made real. Reynolds continues: “Back to basics. This band - my best friends - bundled into an old farmhouse, miles away from anywhere.

This album is powered by the sun, the most powerful object in our solar system. And I think you can tell. It’s a collection of songs that represent an explosive reconnection with what Enter Shikari is. The beginning of our second act”.

Lael Neale still has a flip phone and there were no screens involved in the creation of her new record Star Eaters Delight. The album is her second for Sub Pop and reveals an expansion of her sonic collaboration with producer and accompanist Guy Blakeslee. In April of 2020, in the wake of transformations both personal and global, Lael moved from Los Angeles back to her family’s farm in rural Virginia. Looking at the world from a distance and getting in tune with her own rhythms, she wrote and recorded steadily for two dreamlike years, driven by a need to make order out of chaos. Forged in isolation, Star Eaters Delight is a vehicle for returning, not just to civilization, but to celebration. She says, “Acquainted with Night (recorded in 2019, and released in 2021), was focused inward, amidst the loud and bright Los Angeles surrounding me. It was an attempt to create spaciousness and quiet reverie within. When I moved back to the farm, I found that the unbroken silences compelled me to break them with sound. This album is more external. It is me reaching back out to the world, wanting to feel connected, to wake up, to come together again.” Album opener and lead single “I Am The River” melts the ice with a dynamic explosion of minimalist transcendental pop clearly descended from the Velvet Underground’s branch of modern music’s family tree.

Blakeslee’s spare yet cinematic arrangements create an ambient space in which Neale’s clear and unaffected voice can explore familiar themes in an unexpected way. Subtle but potent references to Shakespeare, Emerson and the Bible (which she hasn’t read) swirl together with deeply personal musings and touches of wry humor, always more optimistic than cynical. While this is a record about polarities- country vs. city, humanity vs. technology, solitude vs. relationship - the deeper intention is to heal; to come to terms with our differences and put the broken pieces back together again. Lael’s affinity with the Transcendentalists has to do with her quest to hold onto sovereignty over her own mind. In a time when our devices are constantly flooding us with information, opinions and propaganda, Lael is intentional about what she takes in - hence the flip phone and the cassette recorder. Neale identifies as a minimalist “not because I don’t like things, but because I value freedom more.”

The impact of major hits such as 'Nuthin But A G Thang' was astounding. Suddenly hip-hop was on US national radio gaining wide spread acceptance in the smoother life style of the suburbs world wide for its very special message, style and rhythm generated in the tough surroundings of the LA ghettos.

On 'The Chronic', he included both subtle and direct insults at Ruthless and its owner, former NWA member Eazy-E. Although a solo album, it features many appearances by Snoop Dogg, who used the album as a launch pad for his own solo career.

The album, dedicated to the late jaimie branch (a protégé of Mazurek's), features a compacted version of his long-running Exploding Star Orchestra including guitarist Jeff Parker, vocalist Damon Locks, drummer Gerald Cleaver, and pianists Angelica Sanchez and Craig Taborn.

Drop the needle and immediately find this crew deep in a chromatic funk fantasy of outer-space grooves and Bartok-ian riffs. Vocalist/MC Damon Locks brings the Deltron 3030 energy while pianist Craig Taborn and Angelica Sanchez face-off from behind Wurlitzer pianos and Moog synthesizers. Parker is in absolute space shred mode.

Lightning Dreamers will connect with the 90s Chicago heads who still ride for Mazurek projects Isotope 217 and Chicago Underground -no doubt- but be sure to play it for your customers on that hip-hop-into-jazz road; the young heads who are now posthumously discovering the long form work of Pharaoh Sanders; the crowd who wandered to the Can section after hearing a Tyler The Creator sample.

American Football's first album showcases cleanly picked guitars, intricate drumming, and the vocals of Mike Kinsella (Owen, Cap'n Jazz). The band, made up of Kinsella, Steve Holmes and Steve Lamos rooted itself in Champaign and recorded this album at Private Studios with Brendan Gamble (Braid). Despite little touring and with only an EP behind them, these nine songs highlight the trio's uncanny songwriting abilities.
