          Pygmalion - Coloured Vinyl Edition

When Slowdive disbanded in 1995 music fans widely associated it with the demise of the shoegaze genre. Their last sign of life was Pygmalion (before they reunited in 2014) and it was, after Just For A Day and Souvlaki a totally different and more abstract album. Where the band attempted to put more song structures in place on Souvlaki, they began to incorporate more elements of ambient electronica on Pygmalion. Tracks like “Blue Skied An’ Clear” and “Crazy For You” demonstrate that the songs are still there, somewhere -- they’re just buried under more abstract sounds than before.

Available as a 25th anniversary edition of 3000 individually numbered copies on clear & green marbled vinyl. The package includes an insert.

            Cranes

            Loved

Loved is the third album by the British band Cranes, released in 1994. Elements of alternative rock, shoegaze, dream-pop and darkwave are mixed in their attractive music. Their gothic elements made a return, while they retained the feeling of their previous album Forever. It was another artistic experience, with nicely orchestrated and constructed songs. Loved gives the title all the credits, as it is an album which shows most of their feelings and emotions. Siblings Alison and Jim Shaw formed the band Cranes back in 1989. They recorded several successful albums, including 1991s Wings of Joy and 1994s Loved.

              The Ethiopians

Reggae Power - Coloured Vinyl Edition

The Ethiopians was one of Jamaica’s most popular bands during the late ska, rocksteady and early reggae periods. As a much loved harmony group. After a series of major ska and rock steady hits, the group began working with producer, Karl ‘J.J.’ Johnson, with whom they subsequently enjoyed some of the biggest reggae sellers of the late sixties and early seventies, most notably ‘Everything Crash’, ‘What A Fire’, ‘Feel The Spirit’, ‘Hong Kong Flu’ and ‘Woman Capture Man’. The Reggae Power album is chock-full of these tasty melodies and rhythms and comes wrapped in a cool sleeve photo of future Carry On Girls actress Pauline Peart.

Reggae Power is available as a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on solid orange coloured vinyl.

Just For A Day - Coloured Vinyl Reissue

The English shoegaze band Slowdive formed in 1989 and consisted of Nick Chaplin (bass), Rachel Goswell (vocals, guitar), Christian Savill (guitar) and the band’s primary songwriter Neil Halstead (vocals, guitar). The production on Slowdive’s debut commenced shortly after Halstead convinced Alan McGee, head of Creation Records, the band had enough songs written for a full-length album. Slowdive actually did not. The group hurriedly began writing songs in the studio, experimenting with sounds and cannabis during the process. This eventually lead to their debut album Just for a Day, released in 1991.

Available as a limited edition of 4000 individually numbered copies on flaming coloured vinyl.

                  Tin Machine

                  Tin Machine II

Originally released by Victory Music in 1991, Tin Machine II is the second and final studio album by Tin Machine. After this album and the supporting tour, frontman David Bowie resumed his solo career.

Tin Machine II’s reputation has only increased over the years. Uncut magazine placed the album on their list of 50 Great Lost Albums (their list of great albums not currently available for purchase), calling the album “extraordinary”.

As with all Bowie albums, there are plenty of strong tracks here to make this a must have. Opening track “Baby Universal” is pure Bowie. He re-recorded this track in 1996 for his 1997 album Earthling, but the track was not released on the album. It was eventually released in 2020 on the Bowie EP Is it Any Wonder?. The first single “You Belong in Rock n’ Roll” was released ahead of the album and peaked at No. 33 in the UK. The second single “Baby Universal” achieved success on the Modern Rock chart in the USA, where it reached No. 21, and the third and last single “One Shot” became an even bigger hit, reaching No. 3.

The album’s cover (which was censored for its original USA release!) was created by Edward Bell, who had previously worked with Bowie in making artwork for Scary Monsters. The MOV cover features a spot varnish finish.

Music On Vinyl gives Tin Machine II its first vinyl re-release since the 1991 original, and it’s pressed on coloured vinyl for the very first time. The initial pressing is a limited edition of 10000 individually numbered copies on silver coloured vinyl.

                    The Upsetters

                    Eastwood Rides Again

Eastwood Rides Again follows the theme of Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry & The Upsetters previous classic, Return Of Django - and like that one, the groove isn’t just the rocksteady rhythms you’d expect – but also maybe this more spacious version of the style. They got their funk on with the inspiration of Spaghetti Westerns and soul music. The record is largely instrumental and its a representation of Perry’s significant production skills.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry was a pioneer in the 1970s development of dub music and worked together with artists such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Clash and The Beastie Boys. Nowadays he’s still performing and recording music.

Eastwood Rides Again is available as a limited edition of 1000 individually numbered copies on orange vinyl.

                      The Wannadies

                      Be A Girl

Swedish rockers The Wannadies reached internationally stardom by releasing their third album Be A Girl. Single “You and Me Song” became the group’s biggest hit, peaking at number eighteen in the United Kingdom. The song featured on the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s film Romeo + Juliet (starring Claire Danes and Leonardo DiCaprio). But the magic of the album goes further, “Might Be Stars” became another UK hit, and sounds exactly like the Britpop from that time. The sound of summer is what makes this record so wonderful, from the start to the end.

Be A Girl is available as a limited 25th anniversary edition of 1.000 individually numbered copies on transparent yellow vinyl.

                        Boo Radleys

                        Wake Up!

The Boo Radleys’ third album Wake Up! reached the number one spot in the UK album charts. Although their previous albums received critical acclaim, this was the album which opened the doors to a much bigger audience. One of the factors was the release of the sunny Britpop Top 10 single “Wake Up Boo!”. It became their biggest hit internationally and it was the most-played song on the UK radio in 1995. The second an third single, “Find The Answer Within” and “It’s Lulu”, also charted in the UK Top 40. Different styles of British pop can be found in their music, but most of the darkness of their previous records are replaced by the grand pop with big choruses and bright melodies.

                          Todd Rungdren

                          Something/Anything?

Music On Vinyl presents Todd Rundgren the The A Wizard, A True Star series. The third album by the American musician is one of his all time highlights. Something / Anything? showcased how he managed to play all instruments on three sides of the record and produces the whole record as well. The album peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and the single “Hello It’s Me” was a top-five hit in the US. What he created is a journey through time, with each side exploring other musical ideas. The first side is filled with catchy pop melodies, while side two is a more complex approach. During the third part it gets kind of heavy, and the last part is an operetta with a full band. The feature-length masterpiece remains the definitive showcase of all the talents he was born with.

Todd Rundgren is an American multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and record producer who has performed a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of the band Utopia. He is known for his stage outfits, experimental music and adopting computer technologies to describe his musical ideas.

                            Todd Rungdren

                            Runt

Reluctant to start a full-fledged solo career after leaving the Nazz, Todd Rundgren formed Runt, a band that was a front for what was in effect a solo project. Such isolationism lends Runt its unique atmosphere -- it is the insular work of a fiercely talented artist finally given the opportunity to pursue his off-kilter musical vision.

From the moment the slow, bluesy psychedelic grind of "Broke Down and Busted" starts the album, it's apparent that Rundgren could never have made Runt with the Nazz -- and that's before the introspective ballads or the willfully strange stuff kicks in. Throughout the record, Rundgren reveals himself as a gifted synthesist, blending all manners of musical styles and quirks into a distinctive signature sound. He's as interested in sound as he is in song and while he would later pursue these tendencies to extremes, Runt finds him learning how to create an effective sound with the studio, which may be the reason why the album runs the gamut from hard rockers like "Who's That Man?" to ballads like "Once Burned."

Although these songs are instantly appealing, the album really gets interesting when he reaches between those two extremes, whether it's in the classic pop medley "Baby Let's Swing," the bizarrely tongue-in-cheek "I'm in the Clique," or the equally impish "We Gotta Get You a Woman," which gave Rundgren his first hit. All the details buried within these songs -- not only in the deceptively direct productions, but within the writing itself -- confirm Rundgren's exceptional skill at songcraft. He occasionally slips on Runt, delivering tracks that rely on production instead of a blend of studiocraft and songcraft, but it remains a thoroughly impressive debut and one of his finest pop records--All Music

                              The Dandy Warhols

                              The Dandy Warhols Come Down

The Dandy Warhols released their second album ...The Dandy Warhols Come Down in 1997. The album spawned three singles “Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth”, “Every Day Should Be a Holiday” and “Boys Better”. The final album featuring drummer Eric Hedford consists of excellent chord progressions and brilliantly produced tracks. It’s modern indie rock in which they blend different layers of music. In 2001, the band rose to new levels of fame after their song “Bohemian Like You” was included in a Vodafone advertisement.

                                  Ian Brown

                                  Unfinished Monkey Business

Ian Brown was left high and dry when the Roses split in April '96 and rumours spread that he'd left the music industry for good. Truth is: he almost had! Ian had considered gardening or even selling Roses bootlegs, he felt so disenchanted with  what he'd described as the filthiest business in the world. Apparently it was the will of the people, fans he'd bump into on the street, that constantly encouraged him to get back to it. So it was that 18 months later, around Christmas of 97, his first single as a solo artist was riding our airwaves. It did not disappoint!

The new tunes were superb, but the sound was a refreshing if not puzzling surprise:warm, fuzzy, ocassionally distorted, analogue even lo-fi sounds; clanking drum machines and bashed on acoustic guitars. This was the kind of groovy curio you'd be more likely to find on (Beastie Boys' cool as fuck) Grand Royale than on Ian's new major label. Apparently they begged him for a "name" producer or remixer, but ever his own man, Ian refused.

Mani from The Roses played over a classic Reni shuffle on Can't See Me, which along with My Star (the previously mentioned debut single) and the glorious  Corpses In Their Mouths , smashed into the Uk Top 20, in the days when these things mattered! Elsewhere, the wah-wah laden What Happened To Ya (pure Roses, apparently about the Roses) and epic Ice Cold Cube (one of his greatest ever songs: heavy, dark and mega-melodic) nicely completed the Massive Tune Quota whilst the bluesy and bonkers Lions and squelchy and sleezy Deep Pile Dreams offered texture and variety to an already varied palette. Sunshine sounds like Syd, smashing a song out on an acoustic guitar, one to one in a bedroom. The title track recalls Lee Perry in its cute'n' wonky catchiness.

All in all: a triumph, then. Not shouting from the rooftops, like in his "first band on the moon" pomp, but a small and very satisfying step in what would turn out to be a very succeesful and much loved solo career.

                                    STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Hilariously (and aptly) christened King Monkey by the drummer of Dodgy, of all people, this was the first installment of Ian Brown solo music. Independent and original, it's still one of his best records, after all these years.

                                    Altered Beast

Matthew Sweet is an American singer-songwriter and rock musician. He was part of the burgeoning music scene in Georgia during the ‘80s, before gaining commercial success in the ‘90s. His fourth album Altered Beast was recorded together with some famous musicians, like Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac), Jody Stephens (Big Star) and Richard Lloyd (Television). It covers all sides of his musical personality, going from country-rock to punk. It’s a quite dark album, presenting Sweet’s pain in different aspects of life. “I don’t like knowing people. I don’t like people knowing about me” he sings. The best part is just to see this album grow after a few listens and that’s when it all falls together.

Altered Beast is available as a first pressing of 1.000 individually numbered copies on transparent blue coloured vinyl.

                                      Bernard Hermann

                                      Taxi Driver

You talkin’ to ME?’; undeniably one of the most famous quotes from movie history and from one of its most memorable characters. Travis Bickle, the frustrated Vietnam veteran in Taxi Driver; the lonely nut obsessed with sex and violence who takes a job as a cabbie to battle his insomnia. Robert De Niro’s legendary performance ensured that this Scorcese classic ended up on many a ‘best movie of all time’ lists.

Bernard Hermann’s score is comprised primarily of a brass section mixing with a saxophone theme. The music swings back and forth, to amplify Travis’ deteriorating mental state. Layered atop the two key components are harps, woodwinds, and even noises of the city, like a nearby drum kit or the music of a theater. It was also Bernard Hermann’s last ever soundtrack. He died just a few hours after completing the score. Like no other he composed a dark and threatening atmosphere that drags you into Bickle’s twisted mind.

                                        Spirit

                                        Spirit

Spirit’s eponymous debut album shows their versatility, proving to be a blueprint for subsequent releases such as The Family That Plays Together and Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus. With fuzz guitar leads, sitars, clavinets, intricate string arrangements, blaring horn sections and excellent songwriting, Spirit has it all. The album includes the track “Taurus”, of which Led Zeppelin (who once opened up for Spirit) allegedly ‘borrowed’ the riff of “Stairway To Heaven”, which was released three years later. The signature sound of the band is the combination of heavy tones, versatile drumming and unusual themes.

Under guidance of Randy California (a moniker which was given to him by the one and only Jimi Hendrix himself with whom Randy - born Randy Craig Wolfe - used to jam with in his pre-experience group The Blue Flames), Spirit was a freeform musical oddity that enjoyed huge success in the hippie Sixties and beyond. Combining Jazz, Rock, Prog, Folk and Indian influences, Spirit were unarguably the most interesting band under the Californian sun.

Spirit is available as a limited edition of 1.000 copies on transparent vinyl.

                                          Wings Of Joy

Cranes’ first full-length album Wings of Joy was released back in 1991. The strange combination between gothic sounds on one side and the dream pop on the other side marked a new decennia of music.

It’s one of those debut releases which throws you straight into the deep end. The varied tracks alternated between the heavier and lighter songs. It is gloomy, haunting and almost sinister in its atmosphere despite being made up almost entirely of piano and synth melodies.

Siblings Alison and Jim Shaw formed the band Cranes back in 1989. They recorded several successful albums, including 1991s Wings of Joy and 1994s Loved.

                                            Cranes

                                            Self-Non-Self

After releasing their first EP Fuse, Cranes expanded to a four-piece band and recorded Self-Non-Self. The increased textures and drum slams showing their improvements. The dark sounds are a combination of industrial and post-punk music. “One From The Slum” is an instrumental piece and one of the highlights of this versatile record. Alison Shaw’s lonely voice is setting the tone on this breathtaking album. She’s singing with deeper tones on a track like the industrial “Focus Breathe”. The re-release bonus tracks include the live song “Reach” and the rough and doomy “Nothing In The Middle, Nothing At The End”.

                                              Aphrodite's Child

                                              666

Aphrodite’s Child last album 666 is a masterpiece and their most critically acclaimed album. It took more than a year to finish, and by the time it was released, in 1972, the band had already split up. The psychedelic atmosphere of their early work in combination with their search through new music territories are done well. This true classic became recognized as one of the most important efforts in early progressive rock. The three band members showing their variety and the little twists they putted in the songs. Greek influences playing an important role in the long jams and greater use of electronic keyboards, studio experimentation and expanded instrumentation.

666 is an odyssey through the realms of progressive music and one where all their talents ultimately blended together.

The 1973 album continues in the same vein as Ball of Eyes, though it’s definitely more funky and head boppin’ than the debut. The real ear grabber is the superb Moog soloing by Moulin. Placebo is grooving your socks off in the first half of the album and a more concentrated jazzy swing can be found on the second half. Original copies of 1973 are in short supply and overwhelming demand, making this official reissue a much needed one!

Marc Moulin (1942 - 2008) was a Belgian musician and journalist. In the early Seventies he was the leader of the Jazz-Rock group Placebo. Moulin was one of Belgium’s jazz legends, making jazz-influenced records for over 30 years. Marc Moulin’s three Placebo albums are the ‘Holy Grail’ for the rare groove crowd, a sector of music fans who love that unique 70s style of cool.

Placebo’s eponymous third album is glossy, elaborate Benelux Jazz-Rock which could be labelled Library music as well - having themes that could easily accompany a cult 70’s detective series. Its seductive rhythms, combined with tasteful arrangements, make this LP difficult to walk away from. The grooves go deeper compared to their earlier works and the solos are intense and unique.

                                                  Swervedriver

                                                  Raise

The Oxford based alternative rock band Swervedriver continued to develop themselves by implementing different music into their alternative rock and shoegaze sound. Their first album Raise can be categorized as an album with a heavy sound, but also some melodic parts. Their direct approach of the shoegaze sound can be heard by listening to a song like “Rave Down”. But they’re mainly focusing on the noisy and distortion guitar lines. While listening to the classic “Son of Mustang Ford” you feel the roaring engine run and are drifting back into the American landscape. It’s one out of the fascinating 9 tracks, with solid hooks and shiny guitar riffs. Twisted relationships get’s their punchline on the epic “Deep Seat”. The great debut album meant the start of a great career which haven’t been finished to this date.

Swervedriver’s heavy days have not yet been gone. Since their reformation in 2008 they’re touring all around the world and in 2018 they hit the stage again. There latest release “I Wasn’t Born to Lose You” dated from 2015 and meant their return in the shoegaze revival

                                                      Return Of The Sophisticated Beggar

Roy Harper’s first solo album was originally released in 1966, The Sophisticated Beggar, and by 1970 he had met up with Pink Floyd manager Peter Jenner and re-released his debut as Return Of The Sophisticated Beggar.

Roy Harper’s music can be best defined as progressive folk, but as his work is so varied there are many instances where his music transgressed these genre confinements.

He worked alongside greats like Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, The Nice, Kate Bush and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull. Roy Harper is also recognized for his vocal contribution on “Have A Cigar”, the third track on Pink Floyd’s 1975 album Wish You Were Here.

                                                        Tindersticks

Simple Pleasures - Expanded Vinyl Edition

Tindersticks is an English alternative rock band formed in 1991 by Stuart Staples, Dave Boulter, Neil Fraser, Dickon Hinchliffe, Al Macaulay and John Thompson. In 1993 they released their first self-titled album, and the following years they recorded several albums, documentaries and film soundtracks. During the 90s Tindersticks stood apart with their dark, literary lyrics and melancholy orchestrations and were a different breed as both the British indie scene and the Brit-Pop sound dominated the UK charts.

Their fourth album Simple Pleasures steered the group into snappier and lighter songs, however the liner notes proved that the recording process was a painstaking experience. The respectful cover of Odyssey’s “If You’re Looking For A Way Out” is a perfect example of their new influences by soul, gospel and jazz music.

This Music On Vinyl Expanded Edition features the original album (9 Tracks) and no less than 12 bonus tracks, including “Twisted Wheel” (which is the demo version of “Can We Start Again”) and the Adrian Sherwood remix of “I Know That Loving”.

                                                          Idris Muhammad

                                                          Power Of Soul

Idris Muhammad was an American jazz drummer who recorded extensively with many musicians, including Bob James, Ahmad Jamal, Lou Donaldson, Pharoah Sanders, John Scofield, George Benson, Lonnie Smith and Tete Montoliu.

Power of Soul is his best known album and is one of the reasons that Idris Muhammad is regarded as the drumming king of groove. Featuring the arrangements and keyboards of Bob James, the saxophone punch of Grover Washington, Jr., guitarist Joe Beck, trumpeter Randy Brecker, percussionist Ralph MacDonald, and the knife-edge slick production of Creed Taylor, this 1974 album is a burning piece of deep, jazzy soul and grooved-out bliss.

The album includes the tune “Loran’s Dance”, which received considerable airplay on jazz radio stations and was sampled by Beastie Boys (“To All The Girls” and “B-Boy Bouillabaisse”) and Fatboy Slim (“The Weekend Starts Here”). “Power Of Soul” was sampled by Notorious BIG (“Ready To Die”) and The Game featuring Anderson.Paak (“80s and Cocaine”).

                                                            Catherine Wheel

                                                            Chrome

Long before groups like Oasis and Blur provoked cross-Atlantic media hype, Catherine Wheel were evolving the Britpop style that typifies the genre’s distinction. With the release of Chrome in 1993, they advanced their dreamy pop to the rock sound.

It’s not like Catherine Wheel established their sound with Chrome, either. Ferment [MOVLP1880] was considered their supposed magnum opus, with the extremely successful lead-single “Black Metallic”. Chrome is more appropriately described as a perfection of their established sound, as the band’s metallic shoegaze is refined in terms of both intensity and melodic-content. Every element that made Ferment so memorable and enjoyable is amplified in this release. Rob Dickenson sings with perfect tenor appeal on tracks like “Kill Rhythm” and “Crank,” highlighting the personal temperaments which shape the album.

There are quite a few album covers out there that flawlessly encapsulate the atmosphere and/or mood of the music contained. Chrome has one of those covers. It’s design came from the collective Hipgnosis, who gained international prestige for the cover of Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd.

Sit back, listen and experience this album. You might feel emotions you didn’t even know you had.

                                                              Comus

                                                              First Utterance

First Utterance is the debut album of the progressive folk band Comus. It was released in 1971, with the opening song “Diana” being released as a single.

The album was notable for its unique blend of progressive rock, folk, psychedelia, and elements of paganism and the macabre. The overall thematic tone of the album is of vulnerable innocence facing abusive power, the songs dealing with violence (“Drip Drip”), rape (“Diana”, “Song to Comus”), and insulin shock therapy (“The Prisoner”). These themes contrast starkly with the acoustic sound of the record, featuring acoustic guitar, violin, flute, and lyrical, almost Arcadian, female harmonies.

References to Comus by other bands and artists include Opeth, citing its lyrics in album and song titles and tattoos. Experimental outfit Current 93 also covered “Diana” as the opening song on their 1997 LP Horsey.

The cover artwork was drawn in ball point pen by Roger Wootton, lead singer and songwriter of the band. The centrefold artwork was painted by guitarist Glenn Goring.

Reviews were favourable, such as the NME praised the album’s “highly unusual but fascinating sound” and Time Out said “the overall effect is unique”.

There is funk, and there is Funk. This here is of course the latter. Struttin’ is the third studio album by the funk group The Meters, originally released in 1970. The first single was the song “Chicken Strut”. It reached #11 on the U.S. R&B Singles chart. It may not appear to be drastically different than its predecessors, at least not on the surface. After all, the title of the lead single “Chicken Strut” intentionally recalls their previous biggest “Cissy Strut,”and it has the same basic Meters groove. And if the essential sound remains unchanged, that’s because that organic, earthy funk is The Meters’ signature. Other groups have tried to replicate it, but nobody ever played it better. It was on this album The Meters introduced vocals to their style as well, with Art Neville’s leads on covers of Ty Hunter’s soulful uptown shuffle “Darling, Darling, Darling,” Jimmy Webb’s groovy ballad “Wichita Lineman,” and Lee Dorsey’s “Ride Your Pony” (the Meters provided support on the original recording).

                                                                Captain Beefheart

                                                                Safe As Milk

Captain Beefheart's 1967 debut album Safe As Milk introduced the world to a one-of-a-kind visionary whose unique output had no precedent in contemporary music. Beefheart, aka Don Van Vliet, filtered the raw influence of the blues and R&B through his own singular musical sensibility and left-field lyrical wordplay, and surrounded himself with some of the most talented and inventive young musicians around. The result was an album that, even in the heady year in which it was released, sounded like nothing else, and the stage for one of rock's most iconoclastic and idiosyncratic careers.

With backup from the first, and perhaps finest, incarnation of Beefheart's legendary Magic Band (including future solo star Ry Cooder on guitar and teenage drum prodigy John "Drumbo" French), and production from future studio superstar Richard Perry, Beefheart unveils his fully-formed sound and vision on such landmark tracks as "Zig Zag Wanderer," "Abba Zaba," "Dropout Boogie," "I'm Glad" and "Electricity".

This Music On Vinyl edition includes a whole extra album featuring 7 bonus tracks.

The album includes a mixture of original material by the band and covers of classic folk, rock and country songs, including the band’s most famous single, a cover of The Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane”.

The Trinity Session is completely remastered and includes 2 tracks that were previously not included on the album; “Blue Moon Revisited” and “Working On A Building”. The records are packed in a newly designed gatefold with additional photos and features new liner notes written by author and music editor Jason Schneider.

The first pressing is an exclusive limited edition of 1.000 numbered copies on transparent red vinyl.

                                                                    Ferment

The heavily sought after debut album Ferment by Catherine Wheel is finally pressed on vinyl again!

In 2016, Pitchfork ranked the album at number 23 in their list of “The 50 Best Shoegaze Albums of All Time,” with Ben Cardew of the website commenting that “a good half of the songs on Ferment, their debut, are enduring shoegaze-disco classics, while “Black Metallic”, in its full seven-minute glory, makes a strong claim to being the genre’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’.”

Ferment is the band’s most unique record; it serves as a fitting lens through which to view the group’s work throughout the 1990s. The album displays Catherine Wheel’s early attempts to meld drone-drenched shoegaze with heavy rock.

After all these years, it is the record’s twin epics, “Black Metallic” and “Salt”, that immediately illustrate why Catherine Wheel was so meaningful to so many of the bands that came after them. “Black Metallic”, perhaps the group’s most famous single, is absolutely otherworldly.

                                                                      STAFF COMMENTS

Andy says: Superb LP from the early nineties which was cruelly overlooked in the fallout from shoegaze. This is actually one of the greatest albums from that whole era, and time has born that out as it's gone on to garner massive cult status. If you're a fan of that genre (loved by the peeps, derided by the press) then you need this record.

                                                                      Gorgeous

808 State are an English electronic music group, formed in 1987 in Manchester, taking their name from the Roland TR-808 drum machine. 808 State’s style has been labelled as techno and house, and the band are regarded as pioneers of the acid house sound.

Martin Price was the owner of a record store, Eastern Bloc, and was also the founder of the independent record label, Creed. Customers Graham Massey and Gerald Simpson joined Price to form a hip hop group called Hit Squad Manchester. Soon after, the band shifted to acid house, using the name 808 State for the first time.

Gorgeous is their fourth studio album. The album has some new wave influences; sampling Joy Division’s track “She’s Lost Control” in “Contrique”, Ian McCulloch as guest vocalist on “Moses” and “10 X 10” a gospel-house track built on the foundation of The Jam’s “Start!”.
You will also find a reworking of UB40’s “One in Ten”. Furthermore the album features guest vocalists Barrington Stuart, Rachel McFarlane and Caroline Seaman.

The Music On Vinyl expanded edition is now available as a limited edition of 750 copies on Purple Vinyl.

Could you think of any other film producer that picks better soundtracks than the widely revered Quentin Tarantino? Inventing a genre on his own, his string of best-selling nouvelle violence movies started out in 1992 with the low budget cult classic Reservoir Dogs.
The film follows a band of criminals preparing for a diamond heist and follows the characters in the crime’s aftermath. Its cast consists of sublime actors such as Harvey Keitel (whose comeback was a direct result of this film), Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, Chris Penn (Sean’s brother) and Steve Buscemi as the legendary character of Mr. Pink. The film’s sparkling dialog catapulted Reservoir Dogs to eternal cult status and remains a favourite among movie fans all over the world, a fame to which its soundtrack contributed a great deal.
Music On Vinyl is proud to release these so called ‘Super Sounds Of The Seventies’, a selection of unusual and sometimes wacky hits by artists such as Stealers Wheel, Harry Nilsson (“Coconut” is included on Nilsson Schmilsson [MOVLP279]) and Joe Tex. The movie also raised public interest in the Dutch band George Baker Selection, due to the use of his “Little Green Bag” in the film’s opening titles. Keep On Truckin’!
Exactly 25 years ago this cult film was released in theatre. To celebrate this classic soundtrack a 25th year anniversary limited edition of the album is released on mixed Red and Clear Vinyl.

You'll know them as 'shoegazers' but as the title suggests, their third and final LP was about change. Where the band attempted to put more song structures in place on "Souvlaki", they began to incorporate more elements of ambient electronica on "Pygmalion". Which resulted in a more complete album than the two previous albums. Tracks like "Blue Skied An' Clear" and "Crazy For You" demonstrate that the songs are still there, somewhere - they're just buried under more abstract sounds than before. It's still super-atmospheric, echoey and Cocteau's-ish, but this time things have really drifted and unravelled. Influenced by techno and built on loops it is a stark, haunted record, ambient and experimental. They ditched songs in favour of sounds, and this is a desolate yet strikingly beautiful record. If you like Sigur Ros then you'll love this.

Their fourth album, "Murda Muzik" dropped in 1999 and went on to become their most successful release, selling over a million copies and charting high all over the globe. The platinum certified LP finds Prodigy and Havoc expertly weaving a variety of samples around their tough beats, even incorporating snippets of a speech by Ronald Reagan. “Quiet Storm” dexterously fuses Liquid Liquid's "Cavern" and “A Quiet Storm” by soul crooner Smokey Robinson while Prodigy spits fire - e.g. "Fuck rhymes, I write prescriptions." Raekwon, Big Noyd and Lil' Kim all bring it on a feature tip, while Nas and Kool G go hard as hell on "It's Mine" and "The Realest" respectively. Gangsta shit 4 lyf.

Originally released in 1982, it immediately put the band on the musical map. Turning the flamboyant Boy George into a star, the soulful outing incorporated elements of pop, rock, new wave, dance and Caribbean rhythms and sprouted several international hit songs.

“Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” hit the #1 spot in several countries and turned out to be a song that resonates to this day with its universal feel of heartache. All in all, this set is a highlight of 80s pop music, that set the stage for one of the decade’s most loved and oft-remembered bands.

Black Beauty - Miles Davis At Fillmore West

"Black Beauty, Miles Davis At Fillmore West", was recorded on April 10, 1970 at Fillmore West, San Francisco, when Davis performed as the opening act for the Grateful Dead. The recording took place shortly after the release of Miles’ classic album Bitches Brew. The album was released in 1973, originally in Japan only. "Black Beauty", a true jazz-rock album, captured one of Davis’ first performances at a rock venue during the early stages of his electric period. At the concert, he led his band (saxophonist Steve Grossman, bassist Dave Holland, keyboardist Chick Corea, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and percussionist Airto Moreira) through one continuously performed set list.
The songs in the band’s set list were as followed: “Directions”, “Miles Runs the Voodoo Down”, “Willie Nelson”, “I Fall In Love Too Easily”, “Sanctuary”, “It’s About That Time”, “Bitches Brew”, “Masqualero”, “Spanish Key”, and “The Theme”. They were performed as one continuous and uninterrupted piece of music, a practice Davis had begun in 1967. He later explained in his autobiography that performing these kinds of long musical suites without breaks allowed more space for improvisations in concert.

The original Japanese booklet is included in this vinyl package.

Tracks like “The Learning (Burn)” featuring Noyd, “Kill That Nigga” and productions from Scott Storch (Dr. Dre/Nas/50 Cent) for “Live Foul” still display the dark beats and straight-up street rhymes Mobb Deep is known for. The first single of the album was the track “Hey Luv” featuring R&B group 112. Infamy sold over 800.000 copies in the USA alone, reached #26 in the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

Ruth Brown was an American singer-songwriter and actress, sometimes known as the “Queen of R&B”. She was noted for bringing a pop music style to R&B music in a series of hit songs for Atlantic Records in the 50s, such as “So Long”, “Teardrops from My Eyes” and “(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean”. For these contributions, Atlantic became known as “The house that Ruth built” (alluding to the popular nickname for Old Yankee Stadium).

In Brown’s first audition, in 1949, she sang “So Long,” which ended up becoming a hit. This was followed by “Teardrops from My Eyes” in 1950. Written by Rudy Toombs, it was the first upbeat major hit for Brown. It was Billboard’s R&B number one for 11 weeks. The hit earned her the nickname “Miss Rhythm” and within a few months Brown became the acknowledged queen of R&B.

Ruth Brown Rock & Roll is an album featuring tracks recorded between 1949 and 1956.

                                                                              Bob Dylan

World Gone Wrong - 180g Vinyl Edition

'World Gone Wrong' is the 29th Bob Dylan studio album, released in 1993. It was Dylan’s second consecutive collection of only traditional folk songs, performed acoustically with guitar and harmonica. The songs tend to deal with darker and more tragic themes than the previous outing, 'Good As I Been To You'.

'World Gone Wrong' is an exceptional album, boasting a strong set of songs given performances so fully realized that they seemed like modern protest songs. Much of this record is fairly obscure to anyone outside of dedicated folk fans; “Delia” (covered by Johnny Cash the following year) and “Stack-A-Lee” are the most familiar items, yet they’re given traditional readings, meaning that the latter doesn’t quite seem like “Stagger Lee.”

But even if these are traditionalist, they’re spirited and lively renditions, and Dylan seems more connected to the music than he has in years. That sense of connection, plus the terrific choice of songs, makes this one of his best, strongest albums of the second half of his career.

                                                                                Janis Joplin

                                                                                Pearl - 180g Vinyl Edition

"Janis Joplin's second masterpiece (after 'Cheap Thrills'), 'Pearl' was designed as a showcase for her powerhouse vocals, stripping down the arrangements that had often previously cluttered her music or threatened to drown her out. Thanks also to a more consistent set of songs, the results are magnificent - given room to breathe, Joplin's trademark rasp conveys an aching, desperate passion on funked-up, bluesy rockers, ballads both dramatic and tender, and her signature song, the posthumous number one hit "Me and Bobby McGee". The unfinished "Buried Alive in the Blues" features no Joplin vocals - she was scheduled to record them on the day after she was found dead. Its incompleteness mirrors Joplin's career: 'Pearl''s power leaves the listener to wonder what else Joplin could have accomplished, but few artists could ask for a better final statement." - All Music

                                                                                MGMT

Oracular Spectacular - 180g Vinyl Edition

Newly remastered from the original analog tapes, this edition of MGMT’s million-selling major label debut album from 2007 includes the generational anthems “Kids,” “Time To Pretend” and “Electric Feel.”

It's a sign of true quality that something that displays it's influences so very obviously on it's sleeve, and steals so shamelessly from it's references still manages to sound fresh and inventive. Perhaps it's in their eccentric combination, perhaps also in the irreverence and humour with which these post-apocalypse beach bums treat icons they obviously still love. Their starting point is, of course, the 70s, and off-kilter visionaries such as T-Rex and David Bowie, fused with the very much kilter pop rock of Fleetwood Mac, all gleefully forced into a blender with Vangelis, Sparks, the primitive new wave electronics of early OMD and Human League, and a good fistful of Suicide's darker preoccupations. The result? It's hard to say (which is always a good thing) but it works beautifully. What they do have beyond any doubt, what pulls "Oracular Spectacular" so exuberantly, is an ear for an insanely catchy tune; and, for all their playful irony, a genuine and engaging warmth.

                                                                                  Yellow Magic Orchestra

                                                                                  Service - Clear Vinyl Edition

'Service' was the sixth and, at the time, final studio album by Yellow Magic Orchestra. The band dissolved the following year after a world tour, but would later reform in 1993 for a one-off reunion album, 'Technodon'. Each member would continue their already established solo careers, while Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi also formed the band Sketch Show (with Ryuichi Sakamoto assisting), which later turned into YMO.

Like '×-Multiplies', it contains a mixture of YMO songs and comedy sketches performed by Super Eccentric Theater, or SET Service features “You’ve Got to Help Yourself”, which was previously featured in instrumental form on the previous album, 'Naughty Boys Instrumental'.

This album is more focused on atmosphere and mood, some even say this album is a turning point for YMO and the international pop music scene. They successfully merged lyrics, sound bites and their signature electriconically programmed music on 'BGM'.

"1000 Knives" and "Cue" are the most famous; the hand clap on "1000 Knives" is probably one of the most used samples in the 80s, early 90s.

                                                                                    Sly And The Family Stone

                                                                                    Life - 180g Vinyl Edition

Originally released in late 1968, Sly And The Family Stone's third album, "Life", is the forgotten jewel of the band's illustrious catalogue. If the first two albums can be seen as Sly Stone's fine-tuning, "Life" was fully realised music, alive and vibrant. While "Life" got lost in the tidal wave intensity of the band's breakthrough a year later with "Stand!", now nearly four decades later, we can listen without distraction, savor the richness of its musical tapestry, and marvel.

Many of its songs, including “M’Lady”, “Fun”, “Love City”, as well as the title track, became popular staples in the Family Stone’s live show. A middle ground between the fiery A Whole New Thing and the more commercial Dance To The Music, Life features very little use of studio effects, and is instead more driven by frontman Sly Stone’s compositions.

                                                                                    Bush

Sixteen Stone - Copper Coloured Vinyl Edition

Sixteen Stone is the debut album of British rock band Bush, released in 1994. Widely regarded as the band’s most popular album, it peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and boasted numerous successful singles. “Comedown” and “Glycerine” remain two of the band’s biggest hits to date, each reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. Both tracks also entered the Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 30 and No. 28, respectively.

Sixteen Stone received mostly positive feedback from music critics, calling their sound impressive, not unlike their Seattle Grunge counterparts. In later years Bush would distance themselves from the familiar Grunge sounds with experimental releases such as Deconstructed and The Science Of Things.

In April 2014 Rolling Stone placed the album at No. 39 on its “1994: The 40 Best Records From Mainstream Alternative’s Greatest Year” list. A month later, Loudwire placed Sixteen Stone at number eight on its “10 Best Hard Rock Albums of 1994” list. In July 2014, Guitar World placed the album on its “Superunknown: 50 Iconic Albums That Defined 1994” list.

Third Eye Blind - Yellow Vinyl Edition

Third Eye Blind is the eponymous debut for the American alternative rock band Third Eye Blind, originally released in 1997. It spawned several singles, including top 10 charting “Semi-Charmed Life”, “Jumper”, and “How’s It Going to Be”. While Third Eye Blind peaked at #25 on the Billboard 200, it spent 104 weeks on the charts. It is the group’s bestselling album, having been certified 6x Platinum.

Third Eye Blind is catchier than the average post-grunge album, and that fact alone reveals a lot about the band. Instead of relying on standard, plodding grunge influences, Third Eye Blind draw heavily from the simple hook-laden traditions of classic Arena Rock, which makes the album more immediate. Third Eye Blind is easy on the ears, and its straight-ahead professionalism makes it a pleasurable listen for post-grungers.

                                                                                        Mr. Bungle

Mr. Bungle - Purple Vinyl Edition

Mr. Bungle is the eponymous debut studio album album by American band Mr. Bungle, released in 1991. The album contains many genre shifts which are typical of the band, and helped increase the band’s popularity, gaining them a reasonable following and fanbase.

Critics deem the album a ‘dizzying, disconcerting, schizophrenic tour through just about any rock style the group can think of, hopping from genre to genre without any apparent rhyme or reason, and sometimes doing so several times in the same song.’ Mike Patton’s lyrics are even more bizarrely humorous than those he used in Faith No More, and they’re also less self-censored, as titles like “Squeeze Me Macaroni,” “My Ass Is on Fire,” and “The Girls of Porn” indicate. This is a difficult, not very accessible record, and the band wouldn’t have it any other way.

Incredibly, the original vinyl version of Mr. Bungle was pressed on a single LP, which – with an album duration of 75 minutes – had a rather dull dynamic sound as a result. For the Music On Vinyl version, we’ve added another LP side to give the music more space to breathe. To top it off, it boasts a unique etch on the D-side.

                                                                                          Secrets - 180g Vinyl Edition

'Secrets' (1976) is a Jazz-Funk fusion album by acclaimed keyboard player Herbie Hancock. Following up on his previous album 'Man-Child', the album again features Paul Jackson on bass, and reedist Bennie Maupin continued to provide most of the solos alongside Hancock. 'Man-Child' had seen the addition of electric guitar to Hancock's sound, and 'Secrets' saw the guitar's place in the arrangements rise to crucial importance throughout. The flamboyant rhythm guitar contributions of top Motown session musician Wah Wah Watson are a particularly notable feature of the album.

Where 'Man-Child' was evenly divided between up-tempo and laid-back tracks, 'Secrets' emphasised the more mellow, softly rounded mood. Even the more up-tempo tracks, "Doin' It" and "Cantaloupe Island", are suffused with a relaxed Caribbean influence, and overall the album tends towards restrained, rolling grooves rather than overtly high-energy funk. Appropriately, Hancock spent much of his time using the mellow tones of the Rhodes piano, and took advantage of the new polyphonic synthesizers to contribute thick pads, foreshadowing ambient music.

                                                                                          Fernando Velázquez

Hercules OST - Blue Vinyl Edition

Hercules (2014) is a riveting adventure blockbuster directed by Brett Ratner and starring Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock), Joseph Fiennes, John Hurt and more. It is based on the graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars.

The film was a pleasant surprise to critics. The chief film critic for Variety wrote: “it’s a grandly staged, solidly entertaining, old-fashioned adventure movie that does something no other Hercules movie has quite done before: it cuts the mythical son of Zeus down to human size (or as human as you can get while still being played by Dwayne Johnson)” and further added that “[Hercules’s] strongest asset is surely Johnson, who continues to foster one of the most affable, guileless screen personas in movies today.”

The music epic, driving, classic and cool. All of these adjectives were used to describe the music desired by the creative team making Hercules. Composer Fernando Velázquez rose to the occasion and delivered a fantastic score. The recording sessions took place at Air Studios and Abbey Road Studios in London, with Fernando conducting the tremendous London Philharmonic Orchestra.

                                                                                            Elvis Presley

Fast forward 47 years. It was released in 1994, right after the band toured with Biohazard and House of Pain. The album’s themes mainly consisted of both drug and child abuse. Korn was well received by music critics. The band stormed the alternative scene virtually overnight, and is said to have established Nu-Metal.

Bands like Coal Chamber and Limp Bizkit were inspired by the album’s rage, emphasising similar grooves and song structures, including some Hip Hop elements. Slipknot, Machine Head, and Sepultura were also inspired by the album. The album launched the career of record producer Ross Robinson, who later produced albums such as Three Dollar Bill, Yall by Limp Bizkit and Slipknot’s first two albums.

A little more than a year after release, the album went Gold in the United States. The album spawned 4 singles; “Blind”, followed by “Need To”, “Shoots and Ladders” and “Clown”. The album has now sold over 10 million copies worldwide and was never before issued on vinyl.

It was the first album Morissette had written and produced all on her own, debuting at number one on charts in 12 countries, including the United States and Canada. The album produced the singles “Hands Clean” and “Precious Illusions”.

Following up on the massively successful Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie [MOVLP1140], it was time for a cool change in making her next record. With Under Rug Swept, Morissette brought back the sound of Jagged Little Pill, a lush, dense layering of loops, guitars, keyboards, and vocals that makes her songs incredibly catchy. While sounding really good, the music flows, the production shines in its subtleties, it’s pleasingly melodic, tempering the extremities of Jagged Little Pill while retaining character.

ln Summer 2014, the world's most revered monster is reborn when the epic action adventure Godzilla is released. From visionary new director Gareth Edwards (Monsters) comes a powerful story of human courage and reconciliation in the face of titanic forces of nature, when the awe-inspiring Godzilla rises to restore balance as humanity stands defenceless.

Film composer Alexandre Desplat was hired to compose an original soundtrack for Godzilla. Desplat had not composed previously for a monster film, having worked on movies such as The King's Speech, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and the final two Harry Potter films. Desplat accepted the contract after being impressed with Edwards' Monsters. Desplat describes the soundtrack for Godzilla as "non-stop fortissimo, with lots of brass, Japanese drums, and electric violin." The score is also conducted by Desplat.

Based on a short story written by lead singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala and sound manipulation artist Jeremy Michael Ward, the concept album is an hour-long tale of Cerpin Taxt, a man who enters a week-long coma after overdosing on a mixture of morphine and rat poison.

The title of the album is taken from the lyrics of the song “Eunuch Provocateur”, which is included on the band’s debut EP, Tremulant. The cover artwork is by Storm Thorgerson, who also designed the artwork for the album Frances the Mute. The album is co-produced by Rick Rubin and The Mars Volta guitarist Omar Rodriguez-Lopez. As Eva Gardner, the original bassist, parted ways with the band, Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea is featured at bass guitar player on the album.

The vinyl edition of the album was only released in the US in limited quantities and is a much wanted vinyl piece. After Mother Love Bone singer Andrew Wood died in 1990 of a heroin overdose, his former roommate and Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell was devastated and needed a musical outlet for his grief. Cornell assembled a group of (soon-to-be famous) musicians, with Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron and Mother Love Bone members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. Gossard and Ament called in Eddie Vedder and Mike McCready, who were members of their new project Pearl Jam. Temple Of The Dog was essentially a side project without pressure from a record label, which resulted in simply a beautiful, incredibly honest album.

Official vinyl releases of Temple Of The Dog have been in short supply – to celebrate its official reissue we’re giving it a 2LP treatment for best audio, with an etch on the D-side. The last album of Faith No More was a worthy goodbye to millions of fans worldwide. Having a new guitarist in their ranks, the band recorded 12 fresh songs in the comfort of bassist Billy Gould’s home studio. These sessions produced two hits: “Ashes To Ashes” and “Last Cup Of Sorrow”. Straightforward and concise, the album sequence takes no prisoners and delivers an outstanding Faith No More experience. At its release in 1997 Album Of The Year was pressed on LP in small quantities, making original vinyl copies very hard to find.

With the reissue of Music On Vinyl, thousands of fans can again enjoy this album the way it should be heard - on wax! To stir up some attention we’ve thrown in a special first run of 2000 copies on GOLD vinyl – must be seen to be believed. Don’t sleep on this one.

                                                                                                            King Of The Delta Blues

If one would ever have to start assembling a serious Blues collection, Robert Johnson’s King Of The Delta Blues Singers vol. 1 would be the best purchase. The mythical figure that inspired the worldwide Blues revival in the Sixties will forever be credited with inspiring guitar greats like Clapton and Hendrix to pick up a guitar.

Johnson lived a short but impactful musical tenure in the Thirties. After apparently ‘selling his soul at the crossroads’, Johnson quickly became the best Country Blues singer in his time, however a tormented one. The devil eventually took his soul at a too young age of 27. The remastered audio of this original 1961 collection of material is simply stunning – Robert Johnson never sounded so alive.

Carrie is the 2013 remake of the classic horror tale about Carrie White, a shy girl who is outcast by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother. Carrie unleashes telekinetic terror on her small town after being pushed too far at her senior prom.

Based on the best-selling novel by Stephen King, Carrie is directed by Kimberly Peirce with a screenplay by Lawrence D. Cohen and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, with top actresses Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore signing for the lead roles.

The haunting classical score by Marco Beltrami vividly accompanies the eerie and terrifying scenes of the film. The dynamic soundtrack is wonderfully suited for a vinyl issue, making this without a doubt an audiophile collectible.

Alanis Morissette defined the alternative female Pop sound in the ‘90s, with a string of hits under her belt from the million-seller albums Jagged Little Pill (1995) and Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie (1998). In 1999 she performed a selection of personal favourites live at MTV Unplugged, with an emphasis on the non-hit material from the Supposed album. Morissette wanted to prove she’s more than ‘just’ the hits she produced, resulting in her daring step to not perform some of her contemporary hits including “Thank U” and “So Pure”. MTV Unplugged shows a multi-faceted artist, fully grown into her own and strong as ever.

Original vinyl copies are extremely hard to find. Mike Patton on vocals proved a massive improvement on their previous singer. Added at the last moment to complement a set of strong, funky songs, he joined Roddy Bottum on keys, Jim Martin on guitars, bassist Bill Gould and Mike Bordin on drums. The hit single “Epic” proved to be just that, and is one of the most recognizable Faith No More songs in their repertoire.

Riding high on the success of 'Aloha From Hawaii', Elvis did something remarkable. He decided that his next recording project would be on his home turf - Memphis, TN. The most desirable studio in town was the red-hot STAX - the launching pad of such greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave and Isaac Hayes. Elvis assembled the very best musicians in town - members of Booker T. and The MGs, The Memphis Boys and his own TCB band to create the ultimate band and he searched for fresh new material that would reflect his new path. Such songs as “I Got A Feelin’ In My Body” and “Loving Arms” demonstrate an artist looking to broaden his palette and his reach.

The Stax material has never been positioned as a whole body of work - but is an amazing chapter of Elvis’ career. With the 'Elvis At Stax' release, all of this material is collected for the first time. Along with some of the funky outtakes, it creates a fresh new package that, while it doesn’t have the known hits, tells a great story.

Their sound has often been compared with that of the noisy and distorted Jesus And Mary Chain, while the Velvet Underground and even the vocal harmonies of the Everly Brothers are never far away either. The most noticeable difference in sound between the debut EP, which had all songs in B-flat minor, and this album is that here all songs are in B-flat major. The result is an album drenched in an uplifting fifties and sixties sound.

Because of this wall of sound you might expect a Phil Spector production, but Sune Rose Wagner himself (one half of the Danish duo which is The Raveonettes) and Richard Gottehrer (producer for a.o. Blondie and The Go-Go's, and founder of Sire Records) were responsible for this remarkable and uplifting release.

In 1993 the world was startled by the horror story of the murder of three 8-year old boys near Memphis, Tennessee. Three local teenagers were arrested and given life sentences, one of them was to be executed. Then in 2011, after a tireless campaign involving rock stars, movie actors and supporters from the public the three were released. These famous people all contributed to create awareness and prove the innocence of the three convicted men. Famed movie director Peter Jackson decided to shoot a documentary on the subject, called West Of Memphis: Voices For Justice. Amongst others, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder and Patti Smith used their songs for various benefit activities for the case. Johnny Depp’s version of Little Lion Man, as well as all the other songs on the soundtrack, played an important role in the life of prime suspect Damien Echols whose innocence was proven in 2011. After eighteen years in prison he declared: “Music has always played a huge role in my life. In my early years it allowed me to escape the crushing poverty I was born into. Then, when I was put on trial, it was music they used against me. My love of heavy metal was considered ‘proof’ that I was evil and a satanic murderer. And then, ultimately, it was music that helped to free me” said Damien Echols.

Vibraphonist Roy Ayers made his international breakthrough as bandleader of Roy Ayers Ubiquity, a highly influential jazz-funk outfit counted Billy Cobham and Alphonse Mouzon among its members. But even before ‘Ubiquity’, Ayers had already proven his music chops playing with the likes of Herbie Mann, Gary Bartz, Hubert Laws and Herbie Hancock. Hancock joins Ayers under his pseudonym Ronnie Clark on 1967’s 'Virgo Vibes', a jazzy hard-bop album that seems miles away from Ayers distinctive jazz-R&B fusion he would become famous for. However, there’s a typical ‘Ayers vibe’ on 'Virgo Vibes', a relaxed and sunny record that any Jazz collector should own!

When bassman Larry Graham and drummer Greg Errico split before the 1973 "Fresh" sessions, Sly and the Family Stone kept the pedal on cruise-control as though nothing had happened. Refrying the old Doris Day chestnut, "Que Sera, Sera", helped brighten the mood considerably from the almost scary sound of "Riot". Recorded in 1973 it’s steeped in the narcotic haze of political and social protest, but it is also an undeniably funky album. Elastic basslines, foot-stomping beats, eccentricity lurking around every note; Fresh is cool demonstration of why Sly And The Family Stone were one of the most influential bands in ‘black’ music, and Fresh is one of the best Funk albums of its era. But even though "If You Want Me to Stay" stormed the charts, Sly's increasingly erratic behavior was a bellwether that the glory days of Sly and the Family Stone seemed numbered.

Much is made of his older brother Brian's tortured genius, but Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson had his own deeply artistic statement to make - one he made with moody, heartrending beauty and fathomless, soulful introspection on his 1977 masterpiece, "Pacific Ocean Blue". Besides being the first solo album by a member of the Beach Boys, "Pacific Ocean Blue" is a lost classic of 70s West Coast rock, a richly orchestrated opus that swaths the singer-songwriter's delicate and profoundly personal observations in epic, wide-screen arrangements that easily match the drama of the celluloid blockbusters made in his Hollywood back yard. Awash in studio strings and layered, breathy melodies, the piano-sprinkled balladry of tracks like "Thoughts of You" and "End Of The Show" offer glimpses of a more tender, wounded, and never-before-seen side of this most famously free-spirited Beach Boys member; while such ecology-themed meditations as "River Song" (which boasts flashes of hard rock) and the title cut reflect other topics close to the drummer's heart. But despite the album's more serious subject matter, the Beach Boys' good-time pop is still firmly on deck with the horn-pumping R&B of "What's Wrong" and the sunshine lilt of "Rainbows". No wonder Brian Wilson himself is one of "Pacific Ocean Blue"'s biggest fans.

Just before she recorded her first album with Atlantic, Columbia released "Soul Sister"; a collection of recordings from the Columbia vaults. Aretha may not have yet reached the heights she would in her later career, this collection shows an artist in the making, her raw talent budding with hope, grace and fire.

"Soul Sister" is not only made available again for the first time since 1966, Music On Vinyl is also releasing it with completely re-mastered audio for optimal listening pleasure!

We could try to explain why it's the best jazz album ever made (and the best selling), but the music itself will do that for you. As Bill Evans said in the original liner notes for the record, the band did not play through any of these pieces prior to recording. Miles Davis laid out the themes before the tape rolled and the band improvised. The end results were fragile and wondrous. Recorded during two sessions in 1959, "Kind of Blue" worked on many different levels and will do so for many years to come.

Music On Vinyl bring us a very special version of the most influential (jazz) album ever. The orginal album in remastered form plus an extra LP containing two tracks that weren't available on vinyl before (an alternate take of "Flamenco Sketches" and a version of "On Green Dolphin Street" recorded prior to the "Kind Of Blue" sessions, with the legendary line-up of Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb.)

Don't worry about that though, if, like me, you've previously been wary of jazz, this is the place to start, absolutely beautiful, despite what Lou says...

'Off The Wall' is very much Jackson's coming of age LP. After massive success as part of the Jackson 5, syrupy solo ballads like 'Ben' and 'Got To Be There' and more monster hits as the Philly-disco-inspired Jacksons ('Blame It On the Boogie', 'Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)'), Jackson hooked up with Quincy Jones and Heatwave's Rod Temperton to create solo album 'Off The Wall'. Packed full of hits, the album features no less than four US Top 10 singles - 'Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough', 'Rock With You', 'Off The Wall' and 'She's Out Of My Life', the first two being chart toppers. Pre-plastic surgery, pre-million Dollar videos, pre-home zoo, 'Off The Wall' captures Jackson at his pop best.

Dave Brubeck's "Time Out" ranks alongside Miles Davis' "Kind Of Blue" as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of "Time Out", with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.

The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's own classically oriented piano style, and the airy, delicate "Everybody's Jumpin'" showcases the lyrical splendor of saxophonist Paul Desmond. With bassist Gene Wright and drummer Joe Morello keeping the tricky rhythms agile and swift, the Dave Brubeck Quartet blended complexity and accessibility for pure jazz pleasure on "Time Out", an album everyone should own.

Sketches Of Spain - Mono Edition

''Sketches of Spain'' is part of Miles' late 50s / early 60s 'blue' era. This is one of the four albums Miles and Gil Evans (arranger and conductor) made together with a small orchestra of horns and percussion, and it was fueled by Spanish melodies - "El Concierto de Arajuez" by Joaquín Rodrigo and "El Amor Brujo" by Manuel de Falla - that fascinated Davis to the point he needed to get into them and go beyond. Imagine "Kind Of Blue" but with a Spanish influence and you'd not be far wrong. Davis and Evans put something together that every single music lover should possess, a sketch of some place he'd never been to. As Miles said, 'It's music, and I like it'.

Recorded in New York in 1967, 'Silk & Soul' is Nina Simone's second album for RCA. Despite arrangements that don't always best suit her voice, this album does contain classics "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free", which would become a Civil Rights anthem and "It Be's That Way Sometimes", written by her brother Sam Waymon. "The Turning Point"' is a song that seems to be about a child making a new friend, but turns out to question the origins of racism.

Ms Simone also takes on Dusty Springfield by covering "The Look Of Love", which was originally featured in the 1966 James Bond spoof Casino Royale. She's greatly inspired by Mozart in the fugue-like "Consummation".

As the sleeve notes on this 1967 LP say, 'Simone is neither all jazz nor all pop; neither all soul or all R&B. She is neither all folk nor all folk protest; neither poetess or balladeer. She is simply Nina Simone, a voice in this wilderness of modernity and industrialized society which cries out to be heard'.
