All too often, rare records suck ass. Yeah they're rare, and only wotzizname from wherever the fuck has a copy, but they tend to be average variations of well known jams, with their scarcity merely a novelty.

But then there are records like this, popping up out of nowhere only to blow your musically obsessed mind! From a quick scan of the centre label, you'd be forgiven for thinking this is your standard Chicago acid track, desireable only for the posibility of a few motivational spoken word cuts. When you whack the platter on the player however, you experience something very different indeed. A spiritual journey through cosmic keys and subtle percussion, which vibrates at your very core, enriching your soul with every passing moment.

Frustrated at her students' lack of cultural awareness, Miami-Dade public school teacher Dr Mary Sullivan Bain recorded ‘Do You Know Black History’ in 1985, self releasing it as a single for educational purposes. Original copies didn't make it much much further than Florida’s public school libraries and the record has been shrouded in mystery up until now. Produced with no label constraints, this cross-genre grail sits comfortably in many boxes... 808’s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. The production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the Miami south side. The vocal side offers an inspirational account of Black history, full of passion and pain, while the instrumental side strolls through outer space and Ibizan sunset, sounding exactly like the kind of sublime ambient cut you'd find on a battered old Café del Mar. Reissued officially for the first time ever by Backatcha, this is a total one of a kind.

Dr. Dog

Dr. Dog

For more than two decades, Dr. Dog have maintained a shared devotion to the unruly alchemy of making music. When it came time to create their eleventh studio album, the Philadelphia-bred band adopted an entirely new way of working together, embracing a multilayered process designed to foster a deeper synergy among its five members (bassist Toby Leaman, lead guitarist Scott McMicken, rhythm guitarist Frank McElroy, keyboardist Zach Miller, and drummer Eric Slick). After beginning that journey with a close-knit session at Leaman’s uncle’s cabin in the Pennsylvania woods, Dr. Dog steadily made their way toward the joyfully unfettered psych-rock of their new self-titled LP.

Mixed by multi-Grammy-winner Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Drive-By Truckers), Dr. Dog finds McMicken taking the helm as producer for the first time in the history of the decidedly egalitarian band. True to the eclectic spirit that’s always animated the band, Dr. Dog’s 11 tracks shift from soul to surf-rock to symphonic pop with an exuberance made all the more powerful by their revitalized creative energy. “There isn’t really a concept or cohesive idea that unifies this collection of tunes,” says McMicken. “In the end it’s about us being together, doing the work, and showing up as our truest selves.” Their first fulllength since 2018’s Critical Equation, Dr. Dog reveals a band – over twenty years into their storied career – growing together and evolving, fully committed to the singular work of dreaming up songs that brighten the mind and expand the soul.

After the incredible chart success last year of Propaganda's The Heart Is Strange, and its accompanying Record Store Day release of rarities, UMR / ZTT are celebrating 40 years since Propaganda's landmark 1984 single Dr. Mabuse. To mark the occasion comes this coloured vinyl Record Store Day mini-album, created around the rarities in the ZTT vaults. Gathering together tracks that are rare or previously unreleased on vinyl, as well as being many long-deleted on CD, this 8-track wonder showcases a plethora of different interpretations of one of the mid-80s landmark electronic pop songs. Highlights include: ëThe Last Wordí, previously only on CD versions of ëA Secret Wishí; the 10-minute DJ Promo version íDas Testament des Dr, Mabuseí, also never released on vinyl; the heavily industrial ëIm Stahlnetz Des Mabuseí and the limited 1984 12" version of Das Testament Des Dr Mabuse (13th Life Mix)í.

        Dr.Larissa Wodtke

        Professor Or Dr.Larissa Wodtke

Beginning in the late 1970s as an offshoot of disco and punk, dance-punk is difficult to define. Also sometimes referred to as disco-punk and funk-punk, it skirts, overlaps, and blurs into other genres including post-punk, post-disco, new wave, mutant disco, and synthpop. This book explores the historical and cultural conditions of the genre as it appeared in the late 1970s and early 1980s and then again in the early 2000s, and illuminates what is at stake in delineating dance-punk as a genre.

Looking at bands such as Gang of Four, ESG, Public Image Ltd., LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture, and Le Tigre, this book examines the tensions between and blurring of the rhetoric and emotion in dance music and the cynical and ironic intellectualizing associated with post-punk.

Aussie new disco surgeon Dr Packer has remixed T- Connection's "At Midnight" on the esteemed High Fashion Music.  He skilfully undertakes the task of capturing and updating the distinctive Bahamas-Miami T.K. Disco sound, infusing it with his own flair and sass. Seamlessly blending nostalgia with contemporary elements and revitalising a classic disco vibe. Dr. Packer manages to retain the uplifting and energetic brilliance of the original. A refreshing take on a classic sound that solidifies its place as a standout in the rich tapestry of disco history.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: More top drawer edits from High Fashion who draft in Glitterbox star Dr. Packer to do the business on T-Connection's formidable disco anthem.

          Karl Bartos

          The Cabinet Of Dr.Caligari

Musician and writer Karl Bartos has long been admirer of Weimar-era culture. During his time in Kraftwerk, he helped create the stunning track 'Metropolis', directly inspired by a band viewing of the classic 1927 Fritz Lang film of the same name.

The original orchestral music composed for The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari by Giuseppe Becce had long been lost and in 2005, after watching the film, Bartos imagined what it would be like to create an entirely new one in the 21st Century in his home studios in Hamburg. Now with crystal clear images, digitally restored by the Friedrich-Wilhelm -Murnau-Foundation, the film is visually the best quality it has ever been, and now, with Bartos' soundtrack, there is impressive sound to go with the haunting vision. Narrative film music and sound design for Robert Wiene's classic 1920 psychological thriller.

For the task, Bartos ransacked his own library of musical compositions, recreating pieces he had written as a young classical musician in his pre-Kraftwerk days whilst creating new sounds, melodies and textures. The intention was not simply to write a film score per se. This was to be an immersive listening experience with special sound effects to match the action as we enter the film as both spectator and participant. A creaking door, footsteps on gravel, the turning of pages in a ledger, a half-heard fragment of dialogue are seamlessly synchronised to the action on screen. By taking the characteristics of Expressionism in the arts, and transferring them into film making, a disturbing, distorted depiction of reality enwrapped and entrapped the viewer.

The subjective replaces the objective. We are sucked into a parallel world lit in menacing chiaroscuro, where dimension, proportion and perspective are all off skew. From the convex polygon-shaped windows of precipitously sharp-inclined buildings to the surreally odd tables and chairs with long spindly legs to be found in preposterously small and oddly shaped rooms, alienating camera angles and impossible vanishing points, the town of Holstenwall in which much of the action takes place, is the world of the imagination, not the empirical world of our own eyes and ears. 'The cinema image must become an engraving,' the film's set designer Hermann Warm said. We can hear melodies that lie within the tradition of the Baroque Age of Bach, the early Romanticism of Mozart, the dissonance of Schoenberg, the unsettling metric play of Stravinsky and the harshly dramatic repetitions of Philip Glass.

From outside of the classical tradition there is the folklorist bricolage of the fair- ground barrel organ tempered playfully by some psychedelic backwards musique concrete along with some melodies which would not have been out of place on a Kraftwerk album from the classic era. All the time the listener is on a journey, sounds move in and out, music weaves and entwines, the soundscape is immersive and intoxicatingly rich. It is music which is, by turns, beautiful, amusing, playful and profoundly dis- quieting and it is perfect fit for the aesthetic of era-jumping in the actual film. Dr. Caligari's action switches from the then present day to the past century and even further back before rebooting back to the imagined present. 'There's something about this film. No matter how often you watch it, it keeps its secrets. Who is mad and who is not always remains a question of interpretation,' says Bartos. The film remains an enigma, but now one with the soundtrack and soundscape it deserves.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: It's a classic format isn't it, wise synth maestro crafts found-sound collage (in this instance it's his own 'lost sounds' that got 'found'), over classic psychological thriller. It's on Bureau B, and Karl Bartos and it's an absorbing and beautifully crafted listen. What's not to love.

Is It Balearic make a big signing here as Dr Bronzer appears on the label with a first-ever release. It's a 12" awash with warm California sun as A-side tune 'Sandee Bottoms' hats back to a golden 90s Balearic era with its loose-limbed drums and warm synth smears. Coyote offers up a sleazy dub and 'Wet Dreams' then appears on the flip. It's a more intense and busy tune with cowbells, broken house beats, steamy vocals and muted acid next to strummed acoustic riffs. Max Essa then shows his skills on a fine remix and lastly, Projection go deep and smoochy on their remix.

Gris Gris (Original MONO Mix) - 2023 Repress

1968 Debut Record, this is the Original MONO mix. The first time this has been reissued and its on Limited Green Vinyl. 1968 Debut album from the king of the psychedelic bayou – the hypnotic, mystical and powerful sound of the swamp coming to life. As he became Dr. John (real name Mac Rebennack), it was his LA session work with musicians like Sonny & Cher, Canned Heat, and Zappa that allowed him to start conjuring up his visions of guitar psych-pop to walk alongside his authentic New Orleans upbringing.

While “Gris Gris” contains moments that make it a type stamped symbol of its era, it might have well been made in outer space. Recorded in its own psychic and stylistic vacuum, the album borrows as heavily from the New Orleans’ musical culture in which he grew up as it does the looming continuous pulse of war, heavy drugs, and the end of the free love/hippie movement. The album was taken under the wing of a small percentage of the “underground” upon its release in 1968 and did not find a true following for years.

                  Dr. Dre

The Chronic - 30th Anniversary Edition

'One, two, three and to the fo', Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr Dre is at the Do' - AH 'The Chronic' was the cornerstone of Death Row's initial success when it was released in 1992. The impact of major hits such as 'Nuthin But A G Thang' was astounding. Suddenly hip-hop was on US national radio gaining wide spread acceptance in the smoother life style of the suburbs world wide for its very special message, style and rhythm generated in the tough surroundings of the LA ghettos.

It was Dr. Dre's first solo album after he had departed from NWA and its label Ruthless Records over a financial dispute. On 'The Chronic', he included both subtle and direct insults at Ruthless and its owner, former NWA member Eazy-E. Although a solo album, it features many appearances by Snoop Dogg, who used the album as a launch pad for his own solo career.

DR. MYSTERY marks her debut release with Ono. "Far From Home" is an eight-track album that glides across the dreamscape of another world. DR. MYSTERY’s world, set in the future, exploring sounds that excite the mind and body, underpinning an eclectic take on leftfield techno.

DR. MYSTERY’s talent to traverse the intersections between dreams and reality through sonics, positions her as an electric producer who is only just at the beginning of her journey. Ono wishes to capture this moment in a way that feels special, they have handmade 300 sleeves for the "Far From Home" vinyl out of old record sleeves and screen-printed the artwork onto them. Therefore each sleeve is bespoke and one of a kind.

Landing inna indeed exotic and alien dreamscape. The first two, quite classic Detroit / electro influenced tracks quickly morph into a cybernetic-trip-pop masterpiece entitled "Petrichor" which sounds like if Portishead transmitted from Saturn. Peppered drum hits, ethereal vox and wavy synths decorate much of the remaining duration; as DR. MYSTERY drifts between hydroplaning electro and jarring mainframe kinetics. It's a seductive and immersive trip with a great deal of continuity, simplicity and sentiment holding the whole thing together. Like much of Ono's cherished discography, it's a leftfield, DIY epic which belies its underground ethos and aesthetic. Fully endorsed by us all here at Picc HQ it's great to see Ono back in action for 2023!

All tracks written, produced & mixed by DR. MYSTERY

Matt says: For newcomers to Ono this is a quintessentially great entry point. Custom sleeves, screen printed artwork, featuring a truly underground artist - all aspects that the Michael Holland-directed label has celebrated over its many years of inception.

RE:WARM present a collection of music from one of San Francisco's best kept secrets, Dr Robert Blackman. "The Unimaginable DreamWorks" is a collection of five tracks from three musical masterpieces he put out between 1983-1985 on his own Riverwinds imprint.

A practising chiropractor by day with his own holistic health centre in San Francisco, these songs became his love, passion and focus. Together with Michael Pluznick, a very accomplished percussionist they painstakingly put together an ensemble of musicians to bring the tracks to life. The melting pot for this body of work was Hyde Street Studios which still today is based in deepest San Francisco and has seen names such as Neil Young, Earth Wind & Fire and John Waters to name a few grace its studio space.

Singers and musicians alike came together from all over the world to bring Robert’s vision to reality. This included an Australian didgeridoo player, an electric violin and piano player from Paraguay as well as singers and a choir from the surrounding local churches.

Together through Dr Robert Blackman's eyes they created a fabulous sound of twisted disco-punk-funk like no other that still sounds relevant today as it did back in the eighties. The energy and the stories are clear to hear throughout the five tracks which make up "The Unimaginable DreamWorks” of Dr. Robert Blackman 1983-1985.

Artwork was key to the releases and the ‘Peace Is Alive’ painting incorporated on the label of the release appeared in TIME magazine in 1984 when Dr Robert Blackman was treating combat vets, suffering from PTSD and this was the name of the job fair for veterans he set up.

To promote the album at the time Dr Robert Blackman flew up over San Francisco in a single engine prop airplane loaded with 50,000 leaflets. Strapped in at 500 feet the leaflets were dropped on the city of San Francisco! The following day, the media descended on his holistic health centre, called Riverwinds and in turn he was fined $1,000 for the cleanup!

Sparks (Sparko) on bass guitar, John Martin (The Big Figure) on drums and guitarist Wilko Johnson, whose iconic and renowned choppy style of playing saw the band build huge notoriety in London’s live music scene resulting in a record deal with US Artists in 1974.

                        Dr. John

                        Babylon

Get On Down is all too eager to reissue this unique record for Record Store Day Black Friday, which has not been repressed on vinyl in over 40 years. In keeping with the album's hallucinogenic sound, it is presented on trippy splatter colored vinyl, and housed in a deluxe gatefold jacket

UK pressing of this sought after Alimantado set. Released in 1979, a year after his debut "Best Dressed Chicken In Town", it shows the esteemed deejay in fine form, with a solid instrumental backing from The Doctor Alimantado Experience and with backing vocals from The Heptones.

It's a late roots flavoured collection, with relaxed rhythms and a strong melodic focus; while the lyrical content has a definitive spiritual slant. Limited copies on this one folks so don't delay...

                          Jack Rose

                          Dr. Ragtime & His Pals

John Coltrane died at age 40, and in retrospect it seems as if the intensity of activity in his last years, the sheer torrent of notes, was an attempt at purging the music from his soul before it was too late. The guitarist Jack Rose died at 38, in 2009, and listening back to his catalogue one has a similar notion.

Like Coltrane, Jack Rose's last years were marked by a shimmering intensity, an outpouring of his spirit, onto audiences and records. With his virtuoso finger-style technique and restless guitar explorations - modal epics, bottleneck laments, uptempo rags - it's easy to hear a connection to tradition and at the same time a pulsing modernism: "Ancient to the Future" in the words of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Jack Rose's work exists along the established continuum of American vernacular music: gospel, early jazz, folk, country blues and up through the post-1960s "American primitive" family tree from John Fahey and Robbie Basho and outward to other idiosyncratic American musicians like Albert Ayler, the NoNeck Blues Band, Captain Beefheart, and Cecil Taylor.

                            Dr Dre

                            Compton - Vinyl Edition

Dre's back with his first album in 16 years. Apparently inspired by seeing his younger self portrayed in the NWA biopic Straight Outta Compton, he ditched the work from the much delayed 'Detox' album (a "hip hop musical"!) and started afresh. The result is 'Compton', an album that looks back to Dre's past, but also brings a fresh perspective by including a roll call guest MCs (Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Anderson .Paak etc). Beat building and production-wise, 'Compton' shows Dre hasn't lost his touch, layering live and digital percussion and instrumentation, plus samples and raps into one killer long player. Includes breakout track 'Genocide' featuring Kendrick Lamar - G anthem for the Michael Brown era.

Produced by Harold Battiste and released on Atco Records in 1968 ‘Gris-Gris’ is the debut album by Dr John (Mac Rebennack). Although it failed to chart in the UK or the US on its original release a re-issue on CD many years later has seen the album receive much wider praise from modern critics. A hybrid of New Orleans R&B and psychedelic rock this debut boasts several tracks that have become cult favourites ‘Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya-Ya’, ‘Mama Roux’, ‘Jump Sturdy’ and ‘I Walk On Guilded Splinters’.

                                Dr Chocolate / Perfect Model

Despite the doors being closed on Dissident in 2009, former boss Andy Blake has been anything but quiet, with his World Unknown imprint bringing the acid and EBM sounds of his night of the same name to the world. Now he's started another label, In Plain Sight, which looks set to bring more esoteric house sounds to our ears, with the first release coming from the hitherto unknown YoungTEE. The first track, "Dr Chocolate" fuses the kind of oddball low-slung sounds and spoken-word samples that In Flagranti have been masters of for years, with jazzy keys and 808 cowbells which hint at a subtle Chicago influence. The classic house influence continues of "Perfect Model", which combines misty chords with an 80s pop groove, falsetto vocal sample and synth jam solo which comes across as alternate universe Michael Jackson track. As you'd expect from a label curated by Blake, it's house music, but not quite as you know it.

                                  Mad Parade

                                  Bombs And The Bible

Reformed and back to their primitive best Mad Parade were once one of the "heavy hitters" of the early 80's Southern California Punk scene. "Bombs And The Bible" is their most aggressive, angry and blistering punk rock recording for years. Forget about the poor quality of the insert this is genuine old skool punk.
