JACK J

Berlin's Jack Tennis is back and knocking it out of the park once more with a quartet of funky and floor-filling tunes. He's already impressed with his work on the likes of Midnight Riot and Too Slow To Disco and now steps out on his owner label Art Groupie. 'Astrud Got It All' kicks off with hefty drums and raw horns as well as some bright strings and a seductive vocal, while 'Hey Gwen' is more carefree, slow, sun kissed and sublime with its lazy horns and mid-tempo grooves. Then comes an edit 'California, Shake It' which is loose-limbed and free-flowing, and closer 'Believe in You' is an upbeat stomper with nice flute leads and old school soul vocal goodness.

John Abercrombie, Dave Holland & Jack DeJohnette

Gateway

With "daring and visionary spirit", to quote a Downbeat review from the year of this album's release, master improvisers John Abercrombie, Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette forged a unique vision of trio interplay on their frst joint effort under the Gateway moniker. The trio tackles Dave Holland and Jack DeJohnette originals with a visionary idea of what three- way conversations in jazz could sound like. As The Observer remarked in an article of the time, "the telepathic ensemble playing and perfect execution make it difficult to believe that this music is almost completely improvised". The players' respectively unique instrumental signatures had already fully crystallised here, hinting at the music to come.

The Luminessence edition of the album arrives in a Tip- on gatefold, complete with previously unseen archival photos and new liner notes by Wilco's Nels Cline.

"One thing most recordings on the label share in common is the capturing of special moments in real time. That is what "Gateway" is, what it feels like so many years later, for as long as we have ears to listen." - Nels Cline

      Early Retirement

Jack Francis’s second studio album, ‘Early Retirement’, navigates modern society and fallen dreams. Jack is an old soul in a new world. He seamlessly blurs the lines between folk, soul, rock and country, and is set apart by his distinctive vocal and memorable melodies.

Fans of Flyte, Nathaniel Rateliff and Courtney Marie Andrews will fall in love with him.

Jack Wilkins' highly sought-after Mainstream Records album "Windows" finally gets reissued on vinyl on Wewantsounds forty five years after its inital release. Produced by Bob Shad in 1973 the album, which is on many collectors' want-list, is especially cult for his rendition of Freddie Hubbard's classic "Red Clay," sampled by A Tribe Called Quest on ("Sucka Nigga") and Chance The Rapper. The album will be released in a deluxe gatefold sleeve featuring never-seen session photos and new liner notes by leading UK journalist Kevin Le Gendre.

Repress of that scene-shattering Jack Pattern 12" from back 2015. Originally released on Lustpoderosa, it was the first record by the producer and kicked off the label in fine style. Containing four tracks brimming with electro-disco, cosmic and Italo influences, it's the opener "Miami Phonecall" particularly that caused a micro-panic amongst collectors and DJs getting on board the Italo resurgence that was (and still is) present in 2015. The other tracks also possess a charismatic red laser elegance which'll have you dishing out the poppers and mithering the lighting engineer for more and more fog as you pull out your finest thrusts through into the morning session. Official reissue from Groovin.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Remember when this one dropped on Lustpoderosa some eight years ago? Targeting the ascendency of the Italo resurgence brilliantly, it become a cult artefact of the era. Now Groovin do the right thing and offer up an official licensed reissue for those who missed it first time round. File next to Count Von Delicious, Senor Chug, Il Bosco, Alexander Robotnick etc etc.

              Nick Drake: The Life

'This is the book we've been waiting for . . .

It is a biography to be treasured' Joe Boyd'The Drake completist could ask for nothing else' Telegraph'Illuminating. The definitive word on Drake' ObserverIn 1968 Nick Drake had everything to live for. The product of a loving, creative family and a privileged background, he was not only a handsome and popular Cambridge undergraduate, but also a new signing to the UK's hippest record label, Island.

Three years later, however - having made three well-reviewed but low-selling albums - Nick had been overwhelmed by a mysterious mental illness. He returned to live in his family home in rural Warwickshire in 1971, and died in obscurity in 1974, aged just 26. In the decades since, Nick has become the subject of ever-growing fascination and speculation.

Combined sales of his records now stand in the millions, his songs are frequently heard on TV and in films, and he has become one of the most widely known and admired singer-songwriters of his generation. Nick Drake: The Life is the only biography of Nick to be written with the blessing and involvement of his sister and Estate. Drawing on copious original research and new interviews with his family, friends and musical collaborators, as well as deeply personal archive material unavailable to previous writers - including his father's diaries, his essays and private correspondence - this is the most comprehensive and authoritative account possible of Nick's short and enigmatic life.

Includes a foreword by Gabrielle Drake and over 75 photos, many rare or previously unseen.

                In Between Dub

In March 2020, Jack reached out to Lee “Scratch" Perry to produce a dub remix album based on Jack’s most loved recordings. On 8/29/21 the project was brought to a halt as Scratch departed this physical world. In ‘22 Jack and Subatomic Sound System, Perry’s band of the last decade, connected directly and discovered they had all the pieces to bring Lee “Scratch” Perry’s 3 creations to completion. The LP also features dubs from Dennis Bovell, Scientist, Mad Professor, Nightmares on Wax & more.

More low slung house tracks with a twist from the unpredictable and unparalleled brain that roams the dunes and mainframes of the Hague. The man like Danny Wolfers! Also responsible for Salamandos, Squadra Blanco, Polarius and a swath of other mysterious aliases. Part 2 in Legowelt's latest project "Hermit in a Rave Cave" sees more discombobulated electronix and dusty drums, really harnessing the gremlin tech on this one! Bring out the freaks with these late night 'tronic rituals.

                  Jack Rides The Sky

The debut album from Jack Flanagan, currently best known for his work as a member of the Mystery Jets. ‘Jack Rides The Sky’ is a magical coming of age record that comprises of 12 tracks written over the last decade, some finished and some left as initial sketches of ideas. As brutally honest as it is escapist and romantic, ‘Jack Rides The Sky’ is a body of work that signals the arrival of a unique, poetic talent finally stepping out on his own and releasing the extraordinary songs that have been parked on his laptop for the last 10 years.

Born in Basingstoke outside London in the early 90s, Jack grew up obsessing over John Lennon, Evan Dando, and The La’s. Like any none too sensible kid with great hair, an Irish surname and a romantic view of the heroic nature of rock'n'roll, he drifted to the capital city. At 19 he was making his own music and learning song craft. Through the early Noughties he played bass in scene bands, and the glow of imminent stardom surrounded him.

The scene loved Jack and Jack loved the scene. The career planning did not, however, go as intended. Jack's early musical alliance with Rob Skipper from The Holloways ended in tragedy when the singer died of a heroin overdose. For the next ten years Jack's progress was hampered by fate's interventions and his own insecurities. Exciting projects were stop started and brilliant songs were left ignored, until now.

Barry says: Two LP's in one year? Madness. Fortunately, White is one of the most singularly recognisable talents out there, and manages to imbue 'Entering Heaven Alive' with every bit of his trademark dynamism and stellar riffing skills. It's ANOTHER testament to what an endlessly talented chap he is, and a bloody good listen.

                        Lambchop

                        I Hope You're Sitting Down / Jack's Tulips (Reissue)

Back in 1994, when Lambchop first lurched lackadaisically into public view, they seemed to many people freakish, outlandish, destined at best for the pages of photocopied fanzines and the graveyard hours of specialist radio stations. A sprawling collective of Nashville musicians —eleven were credited on the sleeve of I Hope You’re Sitting Down / Jack’s Tulips, one of them apparently responsible for “open-end wrenches” —they’d named themselves after a sock puppet, inexplicably given their album two titles, and stuck a painting on the cover of a small, barefooted child holding a dog whose cock and balls are on proud display. Perhaps to counteract this bold depiction of canine masculinity, the inner sleeve offered a black-and-white shot of what the more refined sometimes call a “lady garden.” The back cover offered a painting detail of a wedding dress. So far, so weird.

Where Lambchop brought us was somewhere so singular and bewilderingly gripping that — to perhaps no one’s greater surprise than the band themselves, whose homeland remained baffled for quite some years to come — the album ended up in British music paper NME’s Top 50 Albums of the Year. In case anyone were to consider this an anomaly, France’s similarly influential Les Inrockuptibles placed it at number 25 on their own list. Not bad for a band who had gathered since the mid-1980s, once a week, purely for pleasure, in that smoky, dimly lit basement. Not bad, either, for a record whose sessions were initially only expected to produce enough material for a handful of 7 -inch singles. Disheveled yet tender, anarchic yet intricate, I Hope You’re Sitting Down / Jack’s Tulips instead provided the springboard for a career — still ongoing, despite repeated reinventions, and still compelled by stubbornly freakish, outlandish intentions — during which Lambchop’s ever-changing line-up has continued to confound expectations. Wagner, meanwhile, remains one of our most cryptic but crucial voices, an authentic poet of the magical banal. Sure, it was weird here, but it was wonderful, too. Over a quarter century later, it still is.

                            Jack Name

                            Magic Touch

"His songs sound like memories, as familiar as they are foreign. I’m addicted to this record.” - Cate Le Bon. In a time rife with alienation, Magic Touch, the third album by the ubiquitous and mysterious Jack Name, offers the comfort of contact. With a body of work that ranges from the catchy to the cacophonous, Name has earned the reputation of a musician who’s difficult to define. For over a decade, he’s been a fixture in the Los Angeles underground. His songs have appeared on albums by U.S. Girls (Heavy Light, 2020) and White Fence (Family Perfume, 2012); he’s produced recordings for Cass McCombs and collaborated with Ariel Pink; and his experimental music has been performed at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

Magic Touch reveals yet another side of Jack Name. While it’s every bit as intricate as his previous releases, 2014’s Light Show and 2015’s Weird Moons, here he’s done away with the dense production of his earlier work to make a record that feels stark, personal, and effortlessly natural. With Magic Touch, Name brings his lyrical and conceptual focus away from the dream worlds of his first two albums and back to Earth: a simpler place, or so it seems, where humans are falling in and out of love, struggling with loneliness, reaching for connections to each other, and, for better or worse, affecting each other. In a year like 2020, it’s a place that feels familiar and far away all at once. The almost subliminal story arc of Magic Touch reminds us that touch itself is magic.

This week's Ronseal award goes to Cole Odin for the lush and perfectly titled "Warmth" EP, a much needed dose of mid afternoon sun in the week my boiler broke down. On A-side cut "This Kitchen Is For Dancing", Cole is in full Claremont 56 mode, combining sunkissed arps and nuanced drum programming beneath a chiming, chorus soaked guitar, recalling the horiztonal magic of the finest moments from Messers Smith & Mudd. "The Warmth Of Your Sun" switches the style but retains the vibe, dropping the tempo for a dubby downbeat jam absolutely dripping with hallucinogenic agents. Remixes come from Jack Priest and Adam Warped who strip back and speed up the cuts respectively for some full blooded Balearic house heat.

                              Jack Peñate

                              After You

Over a decade in the making, ‘After You’ was produced in collaboration with Paul Epworth, Inflo and Alex Epton. Prayer, the first single from the album, features Peñate playing several instruments, as well as the production credit he set out to achieve. It carries more than a nod to gospel, all set around a glorious pop hook, played on a Farfisa organ. Its musical and lyrical complexities belies the fact it was written in twenty minutes. “Once we had written it, all the pieces of the past ten years fell into place. It was like a puzzle coming together.”

Former Spankrock member turned producer and jazz drummer, Alex Epton came on board and set to bring together 10 years worth of work into a cohesive album in XL’s New York studio, adding in additional programming and production as well as drums and percussion. Paul Epworth, with whom he created Everything Is New, came back in and worked on several tracks.

The album doesn’t just draw on his musical journey of the past ten years, it brings in influences from the music he heard as a child. Loaded Gun has a prechorus that Lennon and McCartney would have liked to have written. As a child his brother would play him Jungle music. There’s elements of that too. His dad ran acid house raves – that’s in there. But perhaps, the most poignant track is Gemini. With nothing more than piano, vibraphone and drum beat, the words of Peñate’s grandfather, the writer and artist Mervyn Peake, are read by his uncle Fabian. And it’s not the only family tie. The artwork for the album, and the first video, has been done by Peñate’s cousin, the acclaimed artist, Eddie Peake. “We both grew up with an uncanny focus on what we wanted to do, but had never worked together,” says Jack. His work is both incredibly joyous and melancholy, and it does something to me that music does to me too.”

If Peñate’s ambition was to be able to make a sound that sounded like a feeling felt, and to be able to master studio production, and to be able to have longevity in his career, then it’s safe to say that with After You, that ambition has been realised.

Barry says: Peñate returns after a full decade (almost) to reiterate his dedication to smooth, richly produced soulful downbeat business, and it doesn't disappoint. Full of momentum and perfectly measured instrumentation bolstered with Peñate's unmistakable acrobatic vocal bliss.

                                Secure As Fuck

Jack Medley passed away on 6th May 2019 aged 41. He was a legendary promoter and personality at Brixton’s Windmill and friend/fixer in the early years for the Fat White Family and subsequent spin offs The Insecure Men, WarmDuscher and also Madonnatron. All bands performed at and helped promote his celebratory wake “MegaRave” at The Windmill Brixton 26th May 2019, much of which is now available on social media. A permanent mural of Jack adorns the wall of the Windmill’s smoking room aka Jack (Medley)’s “Reggae Shack”. The album was hatched from an experimental ketamine induced recording session posted on bandcamp by Medley following which he teamed up with producer Dom Keen (Holy Magick, Dark Horses, Death In Vegas) as a writing team to create a driving, chaotic and hypnotic album opening with “Sauly” a cheeky apology to his pal Saul Adamczewski for the “homage”. Within 5 days of Jack’s death, a GoFundMe campaign organised by Brixton Windmill regulars WarmDuscher, Madonnatron and La of Reprezent FM had raised sufficient to finance the production of a short run of pink and black splatter vinyl LPs now being released on Blang Records, also home to Medley’s UK Antifolk family and favourites Milk Kan, David Cronenberg’s Wife, Corporal Machine & The Bombers and Lucy’s Diary. A unique collectable for which proceeds go to Music Minds Matter.

                                  Prayer

Jack Peñate’s new single ‘Prayer’, is his first official release in a decade since his second album ‘Everything is New’ was released on XL Recordings in 2009.

Jack took time away from releasing music to experiment with writing and production, collaborating with others along the way (including David Byrne’s ‘American Utopia’). ‘Prayer’ was written and recorded in the space of one day when Jack meet the producer Inflo. They immediately jumped in a car and drove to Jack’s garage-converted studio in Oxford where ‘Prayer’ was born, before being finished in New York with Alex Epton.

“Prayer was made for and with my family and friends. It’s a piece about the unifying nature of loss and the thread of hope that survives throughout.”

                                    Jack Rose

                                    Luck In The Valley

‘Luck In The Valley’ is the 10th and final album by Jack Rose and is the yardstick by which many contemporary acoustic guitar albums are measured. This 2018 re-issue makes this contemporary classic available again for the first time since 2010.

Jack Rose first rose to prominence with the drone/noise/folk unit Pelt. Pelt can be counted among the early influential new music underground bands such as UN, No Neck Blues Band, Charalambides, Tower Recordings and Six Organs Of Admittance. Along with the influences of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, Rose also incorporated North Indian classical, early American blues, bluegrass and minimalism into his singular style.

‘Luck In The Valley’ came right as Rose’s influence was just beginning to take flight but was sadly his last album before his unexpected death in December of 2009. Still, his music and influence, much like his person, bold, hearty and rooted in traditional American music continues to be a source of reference for guitarists and musicians carrying traditional American music into modern times.

“Jack Rose, Versatile Master of the Guitar” - New York Times

“The energy behind ‘Luck In The Valley’ all emanates from Rose himself: you can almost see his fingers flying across his guitar strings... energy resonates from within his melodies and his songs, giving ‘Luck In The Valley’ a radiance.” - Washington Post

“It’s a big, bold work, just the way Rose was a big, bold guy - confident, honest, and forthright.” - Pitchfork

“Jack Rose is acoustic music... Without ever singing a word. Jack Rose could communicate in a way few musicians can.” - PopMatters

                                      Music For Children

Superbeat group The Jack Cades bring you the best of Thee Vicars, Baron Four, Higher State, Speedball Jr, State Records And Hipsville. The Jack Cades were born in late 2017 when Mike (Lead Guitar, Vocals) and Elsa (Rhythm Guitar, Vocals) decided to record some of their songs at Mole's (Drums) notorious State Records Studios in Folkestone, Kent. They invited John Gibbs (The Masonics, The Wildebeests) to record bass on some of their songs at the time, which resulted in a mini debut LP "Music for Children”. At first, the band wasn't sure if it could work full-time as everybody was pretty busy on the Garage/Soul/Freakbeat/other undefined musical genre scene. Mike, Mole, and Elsa were all in other bands (The Baron Four, The Embrooks, The Galileo 7, The Missing Souls...) But, after recording, it wasn't a difficult decision to make. It sounded too good!

The Jack Cades had to play live! They then had the brilliant idea of asking the lovely Alexandra (Speedball Jr) to join them on bass, who accepted the proposition, thankfully. The Jack Cades is a mix of a shared passion for inspirational sounds such as 1960s Garage bands, Snotty Punk from the 1970s, Sun-kissed sweaty Rhythm n' Blues, and a lot of inspirational people. If this means nothing to you, it doesn't matter. Just listen to The Jack Cades and come see them play live, as music is for the soul and the ears, not for the eyes!

Boarding House Reach sees Jack White expanding his musical palate with perhaps his most ambitious work thus far, a collection of songs that are simultaneously timeless and modern. Written and conceived while holed up in a Spartan apartment with literally no outside world distractions, White exclusively used the same kind of gear he had when he was 15 years old (a quarter-inch four-track tape recorder, a simple mixer, and the most basic of instrumentation). The album explores a remarkable range of sonic terrain - crunching rock 'n' roll, electro and hard funk, proto punk, hip hop, gospel blues, and even country - all remapped and born anew to fit White's matchless vision and sense of restless experimentation. Boarding House Reach is a testament to the breadth of Jack White's creative power and his bold artistic ambition.

Boarding House Reach was produced by Jack White III and recorded at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN, Sear Sound in New York, NY, and Capitol Studios in Los Angeles, CA; the album was mixed by Bill Skibbe, Joshua V. Smith, and White at Third Man Studio in Nashville, TN.

Blind Jack's Journey continue their impeccable record to date with another various artists collection of superb dreaminess. Helvyn kicks us off with the playful and highly sensual melodies of "Voyage Of The Sparrowhawk". Luv*Jam's ear for quality and conciseness with this label is second-to-none. Introducing brand new acts alongside more established ones, the label's managed to cement this soft, synthetic, utterly beautiful sound with each and every release. "Voyage Of The Sparrowhawk" pretty much epitomizes this sound to me.... Luv*Jam nips the stems of said track for a deep, more galactically-orientated journey. Next up sees the return of Melba with a undulating wave of bliss, gently breezing in off coastal tides and bright orange sunrises, a moment of serene optimism that should heal all of life's wounds. Sentose keeps the mood intact, ushering the delicate and emotive melodies of "Requisition". Basically, this is Luv*Jam stating quite clearly that he and his esteemed crew need a fuckin residency at all the best Croatian festivals and to not have this sound drifting across the Adriatic this Summer would be nothing short of criminal! Most recommended.

Legendary singer/songwriter Jack Lee has been on the radar of rock fans since the late 70’s, when he formed the iconic power pop band The NERVES, alongside Paul Collins and Peter Case. His songs have been covered by a multitude of artists (Blondie, Suzy Quatro, Cat Power, Paul Young), but fans have found his solo work very hard to come by prior to this release. “Bigger Than Life” is a double LP single CD filled with 23 memorable songs, all reissued for the first time since the 1980’s, and showcasing the incredible songwriting craft of this reclusive and pop genius.

                                        Jack Rose

                                        Dr. Ragtime & His Pals

John Coltrane died at age 40, and in retrospect it seems as if the intensity of activity in his last years, the sheer torrent of notes, was an attempt at purging the music from his soul before it was too late. The guitarist Jack Rose died at 38, in 2009, and listening back to his catalogue one has a similar notion.

Like Coltrane, Jack Rose's last years were marked by a shimmering intensity, an outpouring of his spirit, onto audiences and records. With his virtuoso finger-style technique and restless guitar explorations - modal epics, bottleneck laments, uptempo rags - it's easy to hear a connection to tradition and at the same time a pulsing modernism: "Ancient to the Future" in the words of Chicago's Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians. Jack Rose's work exists along the established continuum of American vernacular music: gospel, early jazz, folk, country blues and up through the post-1960s "American primitive" family tree from John Fahey and Robbie Basho and outward to other idiosyncratic American musicians like Albert Ayler, the NoNeck Blues Band, Captain Beefheart, and Cecil Taylor.

Serpent Strut / Gift Of Our Fathers

Jack Cutter is a songwriter and guitarist based in the San Francisco Bay Area in California. He started with a $5 banjo just after finishing high school. In University, during the late 60’s, he performed with bar bands in Buffalo, New York. After completing University and a year as an Aerospace Engineer, he decided that attack helicopters were not really what the world needed and so he headed off to California in pursuit of music and mystic times.

Fast forward to Fall 2014: Jack is playing his quintessential tune, ‘Gift of Our Fathers’ in the SF BART subway to an onslaught of morning commuters when he was spotted by 40 Thieves. Eureka! Love at first sight and in the next few months, two of Jack’s original acoustic pieces were given the 40 Thieves treatment.

Enter David Sanderson aka David Harks, a singer, songwriter, producer and label curator from East Sussex. “Having fallen in love with the cosmic boogie (of 40 Thieves classic ‘Backward Love’) I really felt I would love nothing more than to write a tune with them. Layne got back in touch with a track he was working on entitled Serpent Strut with Jack Cutter and we worked via email over a few months to brew up that misty soul.”

Deep, stony, psychedelic, drawing from the well of Hawkwind, Joni Mitchell, David Crosby, Baffo Banfi and Tolkien-tinged acoustic Led Zep, the proof of concept is now complete and in the capable and loving hands of Claremont 56.

                                              J'Accuse

Twenty years after the demise of independent rock favourites The Family Cat, singer and lyricist Paul “Fred” Frederick returns with a new record as Jack Adaptor, a duo with songwriting partner Christopher Cordoba.

Fans of the Family Cat will recognize the vocal style and find joy in the sophisticated songwriting of Frederick and Cordoba, from up-tempo indie rockers like “Number One Record” (a tribute to Alex Chilton and Big Star) to atmospheric, genre-defying songs such as “V.U.” (check out the unpeeled banana!). Fred wrote the lyrics and sings the songs, while Cordoba provides most of the instruments, production and mixing skills.

Fred refers to this record as “a distillation of 20 years thinking about music and the kind of record I really wanted to make. Now I feel I really have something to say and the musicians to give it life”.

                                                  Fabriclive 74 - Jack Beats

It’s fair to say that Jack Beats have a longstanding relationship with fabric, and it’s one that’s infiltrated a long and hugely successful career for the duo, perhaps better known as Niall Dailly and Ben Geffin. Even before they formed - just as the blog scene exploded, taking the pair on a heady ride of fidget house and bass-heavy beats - Dailly and Geffin were winning accolades through their former lives as DJ Plus One of the Scratch Perverts and Beni G of The Mixologists respectively. Widely recognized as some of the most technically gifted DJs around - Dailly winning the DMC World Championships as proof - Jack Beats have refused to stand still, their sound remaining one step ahead of the curve, and with one resident’s foot firmly placed in fabric throughout. With Niall in Scotland and Ben in London, their stories are the same as any other 90s kid: an insatiable appetite for a melting-pot of music, spearheaded by the early rave scene, ultimately led them both to turntablism. Using DJ competitions to showcase their skills and fuel bookings, it wasn’t long before Dailly and Geffin became Jack Beats, initially throwing themselves into the blog culture ’du jour’: remixing. Tackling pop behemoths from Beyoncé to Example with their own very unique brand of bouncy bass, Jack Beats have come a long way since, releasing on Cheap Thrills and Sony / Colombia, before settling at their current home, Skrillex’s OWSLA. It’s been a jam-packed ride, and one that Jack Beats only see continuing as they give you just a taste of what to expect in 2014 with their FABRICLIVE 74 MIX.

As Jack Beats attest, FABRICLIVE 74 is a 70 minute snapshot of their 2014 sonic landscape. Weaving from the freshest producers such as Taiku & Nulight featuring AC Slater ‘Doing It’ and Luxury ‘J.A.W.S.’ through to Duke Dumont on ‘Street Walker’, Jack Beats always keep the energy high and the pace fast with big, crunchy basslines, peppered through with recent and upfront tracks. There aren’t many DJs who can swing from the house leanings of Breach and Dusky through to HARD’s Destructo, but Jack Beats do it with ease, gluing the mix together with their own takes on Rudimental, A-Trak and Circus boss, Flux Pavilion, as well as their own upfront cuts on mix opener ‘Beatbox’ and ‘Ill Shit’. Technically skilled with an undeniable ear for what works, Jack Beats prove time and time again why they consistently remain a major player in dance music, and one of our strongest ever UK music exports.

Jack’s back! Jack Ellister returns to Fruits de Mer armed with three new tracks recorded exclusively for this 7” single.

He brings his own idiosyncratic, modern take on psychedelia to songs recorded by the greats (The Beatles), the legendary (Syd Barrett) and the cult hero (Mark Fry, who coincidentally recorded himself for Fruits de Mer back in 2008)....

...and don’t miss seeing Jack playing live at the Summer Fruits de Mer All-Dayer, at London’s Borderline on August 10th (The Pretty Things are headlining – be there!).

I've put off making records under my own name for a long time but these songs feel like they could only be presented under my name. These songs were written from scratch, had nothing to do with anyone or anything else but my own expression, my own colors on my own canvas."

We had no real idea how much interest would be generated by a 7" single of poetry but everyone who had heard Jack's poetry seemed to like it and the idea was we would treat it like any other release of a song by a band - we thought that if we didn't make out we thought it was a little odd that nobody else would."

Part synth-pop classic, part future pop blueprint, the unforgettably catchy "I'm Not Your Toy" is set to be La Roux's next instant classic and is as sure to take up residence in your brain as its predecessors. With her own sci-fi disco ice queen style cut from the same iconic androgynous mould as Grace Jones and Annie Lennox and looking as otherworldly as Tilda Swinton in an electro remake of the Man Who Fell To Earth, La Roux has ripped up the 2009 pop star rule book, already becoming an accidental fashion heroine, a pop star as beloved of fashion journalists as much as radio DJs. Both 12" and CD single features remixes come from Data (big main room electrohouse smasher) and Jack Beats (another of their monster fidget jackers).

                                                        Jack White

                                                        Fly Farm Blues

"Fly Farm Blues" is a song written on the spot by Jack White at the request of film director Davis Guggenheim while filming the impressive new guitar documentary 'It Might Get Loud'. The film features in-depth looks at Mr. White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page's relationships with the six-stringed instrument. Jack recorded the song immediately to two-track, all while being filmed for the documentary in the attic of the Fly Farm. Some astute viewers may recognize this attic room as the same used by Jim Jarmusch in his video for the Raconteurs' "Steady As She Goes".

Jack Rose & The Black Twigs

Jack Rose & The Black Twigs

This raw and rocking collaboration between Jack Rose and The Black Twigs features some of the most swinging, hard-hitting string music waxed in many a decade. Rose's solo playing has always had a tough edge, with his prodigious technique often employed to drop right-hand bombs. His use of a thumb-pick originates from years of duets with Twig Mike Gangloff, struggling to make his guitar heard over Gangloff's crashing banjo. The front line of Rose and Gangloff's strings are joined by Isak Howell's no-nonsense guitar and harmonica and Nate Bowles' variety of expert percussion. The four lock together with a sure-footedness honed by frequent touring and a singularity of intent to rock. Gangloff takes the vocals, howling out standards like "Little Sadie" firmly in the old-time tradition—without reserve. A few of the tracks here are updates of Rose & Family classics, with the group turning the stately "Kensington Blues" upbeat and issuing an assured take on "Bright Sunny South", first recorded by Pelt (with Rose and Gangloff) back in 2001 on their gonzo classic double-disc "Ayahuasca".

Arriving just in time for the warm spell we're having right now, Just Jack's "Glory Days" is a lazy-Sunday-in-the-park sun-dappled style moocher. This CD single also includes an exclusive pumped-up electrohouse rework by Ed Banger's DJ Mehdi.
