END OF YEAR REVIEW 2017

TOP 10 REISSUES / COLLECTIONS

Eric Welles Nyström from Luaka Bop has kindly provided us some word on this year's Reissue Of The Year; Alice Coltrane : 'World Spirituality Classics 1: The Ecstatic Music Of Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda'.
Introducing Alice & The Ashram:
In the short period of time we have been involved with this aspect of Alice Coltrane's life we have come to understand what an incredibly unique place The Sai Anantam Ashram is. Founded and created by Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda in 1983, the Ashram developed into a most welcoming, spiritually rich and ethnically diverse group of people. It was a true sanctuary, a peaceful, lush oasis, tucked away in the California hills. Families moved from across the country to raise their children here, who would play by the creek catching crawfish and frogs, or skip rocks. Today, those kids, speak of it as the greatest place on earth.
Unbeknownst to many, the Ashram became the center space for some of Alice Coltrane's greatest, but least known music - it was also a place where, on a weekly basis you could see her perform and even perform with her. For many years, it was in fact the only way you could hear her music, music she created for that space only. At the Ashram, Alice transformed her “generosity of spirit” and “universal consciousness” into practical implements and palpable goals through the evidence of her music and the abiding example of her devotion. And although it became a singular and generally underappreciated journey, there is some wonderful symmetry in her taking what had been a shared vision with John Coltrane further than anybody would have imagined.

As some of you may know, Alice Coltrane was a legendary pianist, composer, spiritual leader, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, four years after meeting John, he died of liver cancer, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate, Alice suffered sleepless nights and severe weight loss. At her worst, she weighed only 95 pounds. She had hallucinations in which trees spoke, various beings existed on astral planes, and the sounds of “a planetary ether” spun through her brain, knocking her into a frightening unconsciousness. The critical event of this period was not that Alice fell into the nadir of her existence, but rather that she experienced tapas, a vital period of trial. These tapas (a Sanskrit term she used to describe her suffering) helped prepare Alice for the spiritual ally she found in Swami Satchidananda, an Indian guru, with whom Alice made her first trip to India. On her second trip there, Alice had a revelation instructing her to abandon the secular life and become a spiritual teacher in the Hindu tradition – so she moved out West – eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram on 47 acres she’d bought in Agoura Hills, California. Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice. From the mid 1980’s to mid 1990’s, Alice Coltrane self-released four brilliant cassette albums. These cassettes contained a music she invented, inspired by the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed together with the Indian devotional music of her religious practice, and even finds Alice singing for the first time in her recorded catalog. Originally only made available through her ashram, they are her most obscure body of work and possibly the greatest reflection of her soul.

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: You know you're onto a good thing with a Luaka Bop reissue (check William Onyeabor for further proof…), and this Technicolor retrospective of the sublime Alice Coltrane shows the multi-instrumentalist at her most spiritual. Originally availably (barely) on self released cassettes dating from the mid 80s to mid 90s, the tracks on this double LP find Alice fusing gospel harmonies, Hindu mantras, hypnotic percussion and soaring, searing Carl Craig style keyboards. Perfect as an introduction or celebration of Alice's inspirational energy, this mind-blowing, life affirming set should have us all vibrating as one.

Can – The Singles, a brand new collection of all of the band’s single releases, on triple vinyl and CD.

This unique document is the first time the singles have been presented together and shows the breadth of their influential career, from well loved tracks like Halleluwah, Vitamin C and I Want More to more obscure and sought after singles such as Silent Night and Turtles Have Short Legs.

The tracks are all presented in their original single version, many of which have been unavailable for many years and not presented outside of the original 7" release.

The triple vinyl comes packaged in a trifold sleeve and decorated with a beautiful spot gloss lamination and is designed by the award winning Julian House from Intro, a long time design collaborator of Can's.

The CD and download versions of the album serve as the perfect easy entry point to the world of Can for the uninitiated and are priced accordingly.
The vinyl serves as a wonderful document to this corner of the Can world for the hardcore fan and is an often overlooked area of the band's career.

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Once described by my colleague Mandy (names have been changed for confidentiality) as a bunch of German druggies each playing a different song, Can have a reputation for the eccentric (or eclectic, or insane). It may surprise some then that the Kosmische legends were more than capable of knocking up killer pop tunes, 23 of which feature here. Alongside big tracks like the b-boy classic ‘Vitamin C’ and wavy Krautfunk great ‘I Want More’, we also get to sample some lesser known sounds like the bluesy blinder ‘She Brings The Rain’ and the infectious idiocy of ‘Turtles Have Short Legs’.

This fall, the independent literary press All Night Menu will publish Sam Sweet’s Hadley Lee Lightcap, a nonfiction novel that traces the backstories of the three members in Acetone, a band that played in Los Angeles for nine years. Though few heard them, their recordings are time capsules of who they were, how they lived, and where they came from. Light In the Attic has partnered with All Night Menu to present Acetone 1992-2001, the first anthology of the trio’s music.

Counting their early years in the scuzz-rock band Spinout, whose sole self-titled release came out in 1991 on Delicious Vinyl, guitarist Mark Lightcap, bassist Richie Lee, and drummer Steve Hadley played together for a total of 15 years. They disbanded in July 2001, when Lee committed suicide in the garage next to the house where the trio practiced. Afterwards, Rolling Stone ran a short obituary saying Acetone’s albums were “well received” but “failed to make any waves.” It was the first and only time they were featured in the national music press.

Between 1993 and 2001 the trio released two LPs and an EP on Vernon Yard—a Virgin subsidiary—and two LPs on Vapor, the L.A.-based label founded by Neil Young and manager Elliott Roberts. In that span, they were selected to tour with Oasis, Mazzy Star, The Verve, and Spiritualized. Against a rising tide of post-Nirvana grunge and slipshod indie rock, Acetone tapped into a timeless Southern California groove by fusing elements of psychedelia, surf, and country.

They rehearsed endlessly in an empty bedroom in northeast Los Angeles, recording hours of music onto cassettes that were subsequently stuffed into shoeboxes and left in a shed behind the drummer’s house. Those tapes are being released for the first time in this anthology, which also includes highlights from Acetone’s official releases. Taken together, the songs form a companion soundtrack to Sam Sweet’s book, which maps the character of Los Angeles as a place through the lens of these three unique characters bonded by music.

“I think our music is all about moods and feeling but hopefully it will get as weird as it possibly can,” said Richie Lee in 1997. “We want things to get weird in the way that you could hear an Acetone song and know that no one else in the world could make that kind of music but us.”

* First time band anthology.
* Includes 9 unreleased tracks.
* Audio restored and remastered from original tapes.
* Liner notes by Sam Sweet.

“Acetone are one of my all time favorite bands. Their music is still as electrifying and beautiful now as it was back then.” – Hope Sandoval (Mazzy Star)

“A lovely mix of what would it be like if Dick Dale and Neil Young played with Isaac Hayes and The Velvet Underground. A seminal American band.” – Richard Ashcroft (The Verve).

STAFF COMMENTS

Darryl says: Throughout their career Acetone were firm Piccadilly favourites (staff and customers) right up to the heart-breaking and untimely suicide of Richie Lee. Unfortunately, this love didn’t seem to extend to the wider record buying community, and Acetone were largely ignored for most of their career. Completely out of step with the grunge and indie sounds that dominated the scene at the time, the Los Angeles’ trio were famed for their languid country-psych rock, creating beautiful sunburnt soundscapes that perfectly captured the vastness of their surroundings. So, imagine our glee when reissue experts Light In The Attic released this fabulous anthology featuring nine previously unreleased tracks. Maybe now they’ll achieve the acclaim that they always deserved!

4 - The Congos

Heart Of The Congos - 40th Anniversary Edition

As featured in the Piccadilly Records End Of Year Review 2017 Top 10 Reissues/Collections. Comes with an EXCLUSIVE End Of Year CD sampler. Click HERE for more info.

Right now, you have in your hand (or browser) a total classic. Not a reggae classic, or roots classic (though either statement would be true), but a classic record amongst all the other records that ever there were. Recorded at Black Ark in 1977 and mixed by Lee Scratch Perry and Scientist, "Heart Of The Congos" finds Cedric Myton and Roy Johnson treating us to ten superlative, spiritual reggae cuts. All over the tracklisting you'll find infectious grooves, soulful vocals and yearning lyrics, all wrapped in those strangely psychedelic audio effects Perry and Scientist made their own. In "Fisherman" and "Congoman" you have two of the finest tracks ever to leave Jamaica and the religious riddim of "Can't Come In" on the flip could make any heathen into a true believer. 20 years after the release of Blood & Fire’s outstanding but now deleted ‘Heart Of The Congos’ reissue, VP Records /17 North Parade release a definitive, 2017 remastered 3CD & 3LP edition, put together with both respect and gratitude to that illustrious antecedent. This new deluxe 3CD & 3LP editions are the first to feature the now almost impossible to find original mix of the album, unavailable since producer Lee Perry withdrew the set in 1977. Also includes the more well-known re-mix, dubs, disco mix, seven and twelve inch versions and ‘Don’t Blame It On I’ an overlooked previously unreleased track unearthed, too late to include on the Blood & Fire release, by Steve Barrow and David Katz in 1997. Buy a copy, put it on your turntable and thank me later.

STAFF COMMENTS

Martin says: Lee Perry's output, like so many talented but differently wired individuals, oscillates between occasional shambles and pure genius. In this case, thankfully, it is very much the latter; the marriage of Cedric Myton's falsetto and Roy 'Ashanti' Johnson's rich tenor would be gorgeous if they were reading a PPI advert, but here they are the perfect instrument to deliver possibly the most exquisite vocal harmonies in the history of roots rock. Unbelievable that Island Records knocked it back at the time!

5 - Radiohead

OK Computer - OKNOTOK 1997-2017

As featured in the Piccadilly Records End Of Year Review 2017 Top 10 Reissues/Collections. Comes with an EXCLUSIVE End Of Year CD sampler. Click HERE for more info.

Rescued from defunct formats, prised from dark cupboards and brought to light after two decades in cold storage… OKNOTOK will be issued on June 23rd through XL Recordings, coinciding (roughly) with the original 1997 release date(s) of Radiohead’s landmark third album OK COMPUTER.

OKNOTOK features the original OK COMPUTER twelve track album, eight B-sides, and the Radiohead completist’s dream: “I Promise,” “Lift,” and “Man Of War.” The original studio recordings of these three previously unreleased and long sought after OK COMPUTER era tracks finally receive their first official issue on OKNOTOK.

All material on OKNOTOK is newly remastered from the original analogue tapes.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: I can't think of anyone that wasn't floored by Radiohead's transformation from grungy gloom mongers to the indie/electronic greats they have become today, and this was the turning point. Liberally spread with their trademark morosity but with an unheard technical ability, ‘OK Computer’ was a stinging criticism of modernity delivered via a new sonic language. Now, twenty years after its landmark release, the band revisits this masterpiece with the definitive version. Alongside the original twelve track LP we’re treated to eight B-sides and a trio of previously unreleased tracks from the same era. This isn’t just an LP, it’s a historical document.

Under this weighty tome are yet more surprises: a notebook containing 104 pages from Thom Yorke's library of scrawled notes of the time, a sketchbook containing 48 pages of Donwood and Tchock's 'preparatory work' and a C90 cassette mix tape compiled by us, taken from OK COMPUTER session archives and demo tapes.

6 - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

• Lovely Creatures is the most comprehensive overview of the recorded work of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds to date. Spanning thirty years of music from their debut album From Her To Eternity through to Push The Sky Away their 15th studio album, the collection navigates one of the most exhilarating, idiosyncratic and inventive bodies of work created in contemporary music.

• Included are long-standing live favourites “Stagger Lee” and “The Mercy Seat”, their hit single from 1995 “Where The Wild Roses Grow” through to recent fan favourites “Jubilee Street” and “We No Who U R”. There are songs that newcomers may only know from their appearance on film and television soundtracks, notably “O Children” (Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. I) and the ubiquitous “Red Right Hand”, most recently familiar to fans of the series Peaky Blinders.

• The album was compiled by Nick Cave and founding member Mick Harvey, with help from the current Bad Seeds.

Lovely Creatures is available in four formats, all featuring personal and rare photographs of the band: Standard CD, Triple LP, Deluxe 3CD with DVD and the Super Deluxe Limited Edition package.

STAFF COMMENTS

Laura says: Nick Cave has been one of the most influential and distinctive songwriter / performers of the last 30 odd years. With such a brilliant and varied catalogue spanning 15 LPs, I'd find it virtually impossible to select a mere 21 'best of' tracks, but Nick and ex Bad Seed Mick Harvey have managed it, and that's what you get here on the vinyl and standard CD editions of this release. The deluxe expands futher and is spread across 3CDs and a live/interview DVD.

At last, Crammed Discs reissue their holiest grail and the best Afro-cosmic LP ever made. This record is constantly being (re)discovered by generations of fans, musicians and DJs, who hail it as an unsurpassed Afro/electronic milestone. The album was recorded in 1983 and results from a studio encounter between experimental electronic music composers CY1, Congolese musician/vocalist Bony Bikaye, and French composer Hector Zazou, with involvement by sound engineer Gilles Martin, Marc Hollander (Aksak Maboul) and Vincent Kenis (the future creator/producer of the Congotronics series).
This reissue was remastered from original analogue tapes. It includes a booklet with new notes by the participants, as well as 5 of the recently-unearthed original demos, which have never been released previously, and 3 original remixes from 1984 which will all be available via a digital download code.

STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Boasting the oft-bootlegged, but always exceptional ‘Lamuka’ alongside eight more mind-bending body-movers, ‘Noir Et Blanc’ pits Bony Biyake’s traditional Congolese vocals against Hector Zazou’s avant-jazz arrangements and CY 1’s deranged synth grooves. The result is nothing short of breath taking and still stands up as the finest Afro-cosmic record ever released.

Rightly considered to be THE Holy Grail of Japanese music, "Through The Looking Glass" was Midori Takada’s first solo endeavor, a captivating four-song suite capturing her deep quests into traditional African and Asian percussive language and exploring contemplative ambient sounds with an admirably precise use of marimba. The result is alternatively ethereal and vibrant, always precise and mesmerizing, and makes for an atmospheric masterpiece and an unparalleled sonic and spiritual experience. Thank christ for Palto Flats and WRWTFWW, otherwise I'd have had to remortgage the house to buy a copy!

The fully licensed reissue is available as a single 33rpm LP and a limited 45rpm DLP, both cut directly from the original studio reels (AAA), at Emil Berliner (formerly the in-house recording department of renowned classical record label Deutsche Grammophon) for the 45rpm DLP, and at the equally famous Frankfurter SST Studio for the LP. It is also available in CD format for the first time. All versions come with extensive liner notes.

STAFF COMMENTS

Ryan says: Every now and again we stock something which has the whole spectrum of our customers in palpitations. This WRWTFWW reissue was the perfect case in point. Suddenly indie kids, techno heads, Balearic beards and psych collectors were all united in rapturous counter chatter, all raving about this Japanese ambient classic. It’s time to join the conversation…

9 - Throbbing Gristle

20 Jazz Funk Greats - 40th Anniversary Edition

As featured in the Piccadilly Records End Of Year Review 2017 Top 10 Reissues/Collections. Comes with an EXCLUSIVE End Of Year CD sampler. Click HERE for more info.

One of THE classic post-punk albums of the late 70s, "20 Jazz Funk Greats" sees Throbbing Gristle breaking away from their strictly industrial / experimental noise sound of previous years and dipping a toe in more accessible waters. Obviously that's 'accessibility' TG style, with the title track opener mixing a minimal drum rhythm, melancholic trumpet wails and synth noise - not necessarily one for the youth club disco... Originally released in 1979 - the same year as PIL's "Metal Box", and with a similar boundary-pushing desire, "20 Jazz Funk Greats" is one of the most influential albums for the forthcoming 1980s EBM movement. Standout tracks include the drum-panned sequence-heavy "Still Walking", morose "Convincing People" (TG's answer to "Poptones"?), the krautrock-inspired beauty "Walkabout" and massive disco-not-disco / electro-dance anthem "Hot On The Heels Of Love". Essential.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Although it clocks in at eleven tracks, none of which are even vaguely jazz-funk, this LP really is great. Better than great actually - it’s a sleazy, queasy, properly perverted masterpiece. In a move which laid the blueprint for the industrial and EBM movements which followed, Hull’s finest married post punk grit with corrosive synthesis to create a truly unsettling listen.

This evocative offering from 1978 brings together three of Japan's finest musicians to create an album infused with the atmospheres of South Pacific islands, those paradisiac locales the Japanese chose to spend their vacations in. "Pacific" (1978) is a treat for the ears; its theme of the southern Pacific ocean and its warm cerulean waters relaxes listeners with a fusion of city pop, soft jazz, and good old 1970’s funk packed with the melodic magic and instrumental expertise of Haroumi Hosono, Shigeru Suzuki and Tatsuro Yamashita. A true cult LP, vaporwave inspiration and Balearic winner from the land of the rising sun.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Collectors rejoice! Another Japanese gem gets the reissue treatment. Top of mine and Ryan's wishlist for quite some time, this jazzy, synth-heavy slice of sunkissed exotica lands just in time for the summer season. Don your swimwear and dive right into the Pacific!
