Jericho's Ancient Horns / Walls Tumbling Down Dub

Heavy horn-laden steppers dub here inna similar vein to Aba Shanti-I's "Horns Of Jericho" release. Uptempo and fierce steppers that's tailored for maximum soundsystem enjoyment and riotous soul ascension. Proper carnival tackle that'll unite the tribes under the blanket of bass and horns. Comes with echo-drenched dub...Tip!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: More from WhoDem's J. Robinson archive, joined this time by Ital Horns. It's a juggernaut of heavy steppers digi-dub that should be enough to see off any competition inna clash.

J Robinson

Herbs Like These

More from J Robinson and his modern spiritual reggae stylings. "Herbs Like These" is an ode to JA's favourite weed, but also cleverly crosspollinates the message with a love of nature, I & I, and all. Not a million miles away from what Peter Tosh achieved on "Legalize It" but with a completely different riddim.

Onto the riddim and its a heavy swaying, deep bass affair, tailor made for soundsystem pressure with digi-dub chords, reverb splashed snares and rumbling subs.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: More brilliant dubwise stylings from new school star J Robinson. RIYL: Rhythm & Sound, Aba Shanti, Paul St. Hilaire etc.

J Robinson WhoDemSound Meets Bopper Ranking

Guide Us

Spiritual dub reggae here from J.Robinson with vocal provided by Bopper Ranking. Dubwise and rootsical, "Guide Us" glides on a gentle plane of sub bass as digi-dub keys and sparse percussion rattle around the echo chamber. Lyrically, Bopper is looking both to Jah and himself for guidance through these harsh global times and delivers his prose with feeling and sentiment.

The dub cut really exemplifies J. Robinson's sklls on the mixing desk, boosting the bass pressure by factor ten, lacing the whole thing in endless tape delays and arranging the stems with all the precision of Scientist. It's slow tempo but hefty vibe make this double trouble for both the warm up and late on in the session. Unbelievably strong - can't wait to hear more from this producer's studio. Big T I P on this one dub fans! Don't sleep.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Deep as the Grand Canyon, dubwise steppers from J Robinson with a captivating vocal contribution from Bopper Ranking.

    Shawn Robinson / Bessie Banks

My Dear Heart / I Can’t Make It (Without You Baby)

Two more classic tunes from the Deptford Northern Soul Club Records dancefloor. Remastered for maximum effect.

Shawn Robinson’s ‘My Dear Heart’ was originally released on Minit in 1966. Original copies go for around £250 plus. Filled with positively glowing soul sounds underpinned by gorgeous vibes and a heady beat. Big at Wigan back in the day, a favourite of Richard Searling.

The flipside, from 1967, is from the inimitable Bessie Banks, the hit maker of ‘Go Now’ fame. Originally released on the Verve imprint. Fired up by choppy guitar and a heavy cross mix of vibes and horns, it’s a chugger with some essential breaks for added impact.

      A triumphant anthem.

      Porter Robinson

      Look At The Sky

Look at the Sky' is the fourth single to be released off Porter Robinson's upcoming album, 'Nurture', set to release in 2021. Porter originally teased this track during his performance at his virtual festival, Secret Sky, in May 2020 to its 4 million virtual attendees. With its hopeful message, 'Look at the Sky' quickly became the highlight of his performance and a trending topic on Twitter. In Porter's own words: "I see Look at the Sky as a mantra to remind myself that there's good reason for hope, and that people can meaningfully improve themselves and the world."

The King & City reissue series continues with Paul Robinson's disco boogie jam Come On Sister. Moving from the Lovers sound of his early productions, his first solo recording was aimed straight at the blues, clubs and pirate stations of South London and beyond - a prolific artist on the rise.

Appearing as a 13 year old protegee drummer in The Simeons, recording for the legendary Freedom Sounds label out of Kingston; to forming the influential Roots / Lovers Rock outfit One Blood; then vocalist in the Nick Straker Band; and through to a 30 year career as "dubplate" producer / singer Barry Boom, Robinson is a man of talents and serious legacy.

This highly sought after debut, part of Neville King and Lee Laing's family of labels, followed releases in One Blood and productions for female Lovers groups Blood Sisters and Charisma. A pure disco boogie party cut, Come On Sister sees the Robinson family hit the Brit funk.

In label style, the flip is given the Discomix treatment, here by up and coming digger, dealer and producer, Bruno (Perfect Lives). Letting the horns, dub bass and drums build in anticipation before the keys and guitar join and it all drops to Robinson's vocals - Come On Sister.

        TRACK LISTING

        A1. Come On Sister
        A2. Come On Sister (instrumental)
B1. Come On Sister (Bruno Discomix)
