Me And Mr Jones : My Life With David Bowie And The Spiders From Mars

From the stylist behind David Bowie's Ziggy Stardust look, an electrifying peek behind the curtains during a legendary chapter of pop culture history. 'Suzi Ronson was there as Bowie transitioned from suburban folkie to world superstar and genius. Few can offer such insight, and tell this fascinating story with such verve.' HANIF KUREISHISuzi Ronson was working in a Beckenham hair salon in the early seventies when Mrs Jones came in for her weekly shampoo and set.

After being introduced to her son David and his wife Angie, Suzi finds herself at the Bowies' bohemian apartment and is soon embroiled in their raucous world. Having crafted his iconic Ziggy Stardust hairstyle, Suzi becomes the only working woman in David's touring party and joins the Spiders from Mars as they perform around the globe. Amid the costume blunders, parties and groupies she meets her husband-to-be, Mick Ronson, and together they traverse the absurdities of life in show business, falling in with the likes of Iggy Pop, Bob Dylan and Lou Reed along the way.

Dazzling and intimate, Me and Mr Jones provides not only a unique perspective on one of the most beguiling stars of our time but also a world on the cusp of cultural transformation, charting the highs and lows of life as one of the only women in the room as it happened.

    Jim Jones All Stars

    Ain't No Peril

A bubbling swamp curse of unholy rhythm, Jim Jones All Stars is the latest project from garage‬ godfather Jim Jones (Thee Hypnotics, The Jim Jones Revue). It features The Jim Jones Revue‬ members Gavin Jay and Elliot Mortimer, drummer Chris Ellul from (The Heavy), veteran punk‬ blues guitarist Carlton Mounsher (The Swamps), and a full horn section (Tenor Saxophonist‬ Stuart Dace and Baritone Saxophonists Tom Hodges and Chuchi Malapersona).‬

After a midnight offering at the real crossroads in Clarksdale, Mississippi, the band made the‬ pilgrimage to Memphis, Tennessee to record with Memphis Magnetic founder Scott McEwen‬ (JD McPherson, Nick Waterhouse) in May of 2022.‬‬

Produced by John Getze and mastered by Grammy Award winner Randy Merrill, the resulting‬‭ LP 'Ain’ No Peril' is a thick, greasy slab of Rama lama rhythm and blues that highlights some of‬ Jones's most inspired songwriting ever and features guest appearances from vocal powerhouse‬ Nikki Hill and Oxbow’s Eugene S. Robinson.

“When you’re recording within spitting distance of the Mississippi River, there’s something about‬ that heavy Memphisair that changes the way that you hear the groove and grind,” says Jim‬ Jones. ‘Ain’t No Peril’ captures that feeling and bathes in that magic.”

              Quincy Jones

Big Band Bossa Nova - 2024 Reissue

Bossa nova was in vogue in 1962 and following the release of the Stan Getz/ Charlie Byrd LP Jazz Samba, jazz record producers were anxious to get their signed artists to jump on the "jazz bossa nova" craze.

As Mercury Records' musical director at that time, Quincy Jones was his own producer and decided to take advantage of the opportunity with his Big Band Bossa Nova, which put together some Antonio Carlos Jobim classics, along with some original compositions, including the international hit single 'Soul Bossa Nova'. All wonderfully arranged by Jones and performed by his incredible all-star big band.

                Caleb Landry Jones

                Hey Gary, Hey Dawn

Caleb Landry Jones, the enigmatic and multi-talented artist, is set to release his highly anticipated fourth album, Hey Gary, Hey Dawn, on the esteemed Sacred Bones label.

Renowned as a multi-instrumentalist crafting intricate cinematic works that hover on the fringes of prog, Jones breaks new ground with a deliberate focus on live performance for his latest record. Jones has in fact intentionally designed Hey Gary, Hey Dawn with the live stage in mind, a previously missing element in his musical career.

Assembling a formidable band, he sets the stage for an enthralling experience, kickstarting a month-long residency in Austin, Texas, this February, culminating in a standout performance at SXSW. The residency serves as a precursor to a series of planned US and international tours, promising to bring the album’s electrifying energy to audiences worldwide.

The music is Jones’s heaviest to date, and though often reticent about direct influences and resistant to categorizations, he weaves a sonic tapestry that hints at punk and grunge elements within his signature kaleidoscopic symphonies. “It’s not for me to say what it is. I’m only here to give it up,” he asserts, emphasizing the individual listening experience. But even though these songs are his most succinct, they are anything but simple. Over 20 talented musicians, including a quartet, contributed to the album, adding layers of depth and complexity to this dynamic collection of songs that seamlessly traverse a multitude of genres.

Since his last album Gadzooks Vol. 2 Jones has been steadfast in making visual art, some of which graces the album art for Hey Gary, Hey Dawn. Simultaneously, he has continued to captivate audiences on the big screen, starring in Luc Besson’s acclaimed film Dogman and preparing for multiple roles in 2024.

Hey Gary, Hey Dawn is a testament to Caleb Landry Jones’s artistic evolution, demonstrating his ability to push boundaries while maintaining a distinct and indescribable quality. With a blend of intensity, vulnerability, and musical virtuosity, Jones invites listeners to embark on a journey that transcends traditional genres, promising an immersive experience that resonates long after the final note.

                  Morgan Harper-Jones

                  Up To The Glass

'Up To The Glass' is a delicate exploration of finding yourself in your twenties against a backdrop of love, self-acceptance and loss. Morgan Harper-Jones explores her emotions through confessional narratives and soaring dream-pop soundscapes on her debut album. Quickly becoming one of the UKs most exciting new voices, featuring four tracks in the global #1 Netflix film 'Love At First Sight' at the end of 2023 at reaching #8 in the global Shazam charts.

“My favourite moments in other people’s songs are where it feels like someone has just reached through the speaker or headphones and grabbed my hand and said: ‘Hey don’t worry, you’re normal – I feel that too.’ I hope above anything else that my songs can be that for someone else too.”

The idea that writing & distilling my own (sometimes overwhelming) emotions and experiences into a 3 minute moment might bring someone some comfort, help someone feel or express something, understand themselves more deeply or just feel like they aren’t alone is really the most important motivation for me to share what I’m writing.” - Morgan Harper-Jones

                    Bill Ryder-Jones

                    Iechyd Da

Beautifully produced and rich in scope – ‘Iechyd Da’ is Bill Ryder-Jones’ most ambitious record to date. At times joyous and grand, at others intimate and heartbreaking, the past few years spent producing other artists have provided that gentle nudge to expand into new territory, from kids choirs and tender strings to dramatically re-contextualised disco samples.

Making this album has been a process that has been endlessly rewarding for Ryder-Jones, both creatively and personally, as he finally accepts that he’s made an album that has bettered one he’s been trying to top for a decade. “It's been incredible making this,” he says. “Despite all the life stuff that's happened, it has brought me immense happiness. I've always railed against it when people ask if making a record is cathartic but I’d have to admit that this one really was. Over the years my music has lost a bit of its hope I reckon. It were important for me to make a record that had more hope in it. Even by my standards the last few years have been rocky, but I’ve chosen to soundtrack it with more positive music, you know? I love this album. I haven't been this proud of a record since A Bad Wind Blows in My Heart.”

                      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Ryder-Jones presents possibly his most upbeat offering yet, still wading in similar waters to 2018's brilliant 'Yawn' but with a sense of brightness and tethered melancholy that we've not heard from him before. Shimmering acoustic guitars, wandering psychedlia and soaring melodies coalesce into a beautifully rich and wonderfully immersive whole.

Fly Away Paul : The Extraordinary Story Of How Paul McCartney Survived The Beatles And Found His Wings

the remarkable account of Paul McCartney's time in Wings and ascent into solo stardom, by renowned music biographer Lesley-Ann JonesNo comprehensive biography of the time Paul McCartney spent with Wings has ever been published, until now. A period often dismissed as McCartney's 'missing' years, in fact the band lasted for a decade: two years longer than the Beatles, and wielded such impact and influence that they at one point achieved the status as the biggest live band in the world. Band on the Run sold over 6 million copies worldwide and became EMI's biggest selling album of the 1970s in the UK.

Music biographer Lesley-Ann Jones has met McCartney many times and knew his late wife Linda. Here she shows how crucial Linda was to the evolution of Wings - at great cost to herself given the ridicule she was to encounter. But Linda saw that McCartney needed the band in the wake of the break up of the Beatles.

Drawing on extensive interviews and her trademark meticulous research, the author shows how this period in Paul McCartney's career was to become crucial not only to his development as an artist, but to his very survival.

                        Elvin Jones

                        Genesis - 2023 Reissue

Elvin Jones, one of the true great drummers in jazz, recorded this album in 1971 after having led his own band for several years following his immortal work with the John Coltrane Quartet. This unique recording has a spacious feel with plenty of room for the players to work out the melodic compositions created by the members of the group. At times the recording creates an almost cinematic space, yet always propelling forward into unexpected territory. No pandering to contemporary tastes at this date or following the trends of the time, this is simply a great example of mature musicians given the freedom to create their own vision and place in time. Saxophonists Frank Foster and Dave Liebman instruments intertwine in a spellbinding way with opportunities to showcase Jones’ incredible virtuosity as a drummer. An album that reveals itself to the listener slowly with new delights every time it’s removed from the jacket.

                          Dylan Jones

Loaded : The Life (and Afterlife) Of The Velvet Underground

Dylan Jones' definitive oral history of The Velvet Underground draws on contributions from remaining members, contemporaneous musicians, critics, film-makers, and the generation of artists who emerged in their wake, to celebrate not only their impact but their legacy, which burns brighter than ever into the 21st century. Rebellion always starts somewhere, and in the music world of the transgressive teen whether it be the 1960s of the 2020s, The Velvet Underground represent ground zero. Crystallizing the idea of the bohemian, urban, narcissistic art school gang, around a psychedelic rock and roll band - a stylistic idea that evolved in the rarefied environs of Andy Warhol's Factory - The Velvets were the first major American rock group with a mixed gender line-up; they never smiled in photographs, wore sunglasses indoors, and in the process invented the archetype that would be copied by everyone from Sid Vicious to Bobby Gillespie.

They were avant-garde nihilists, writing about drug abuse, prostitution, paranoia, and sado-masochistic sex at a time when the rest of the world was singing about peace and love. In that sense they invented punk. It could even be argued they invented modern New York.

And then some. Drawing on interviews and material relating to all major players from Lou Reed, John Cale, Mo Tucker, Andy Warhol, Jon Savage, Nico, David Bowie, Mary Harron and many more, award-winning journalist Dylan Jones breaks down the band's whirlwind of subversion and, in a narrative rich in drama and detail, with an irresistible narrative pull, proves why The Velvets remain the original kings and queens of edge.

                            Thad Jones

Detroit - New York Junction - 2023 Reissue

It would be difficult to overstate the importance of the Jones brothers Thad, Hank and Elvin on the world of jazz. Between the three of them, their performances can be heard on literally thousands of recordings, including some of the most legendary sessions ever recorded with some of the greatest artists.

Post-War Detroit was really taking notes on the new sounds of jazz coming into favor and the group of former Detroiters included on this album include some of its most virtuosic students. Thad Jones, (although he was technically from nearby Pontiac, MI) on trumpet, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Tommy Flanagan on piano and Billy Mitchell on saxophone. Jones’ first for Blue Note from 1956 stands as a fantastic sounding announcement that the Detroiters had landed in New York and were about to take off.

Including legendary players Shadow Wilson on Drums and Oscar Pettiford on Bass; Detroit - New York Junction, a long sought after rarity and a true testament to the importance of Detroit on the evolution of jazz music through Blue Note Records. Recorded at Audio Video Studios - New York, NY 1956 by Alfred Lion and Rudy Van Gelder.

                              Archetype

Archetype’ is an exorcism of South London’s underground spirit. It’s a sound world which draws on its ancestral echoes as equally as it captures the pulse of a city on the edge of evolution.

The twelve-track collaborative record is the product of two magnetised forces who should almost repel: producer, composer and keyboard player Joe Armon- Jones, and producer / DJ Maxwell Owin.

At the fore of the scene south of the river, they draw on different instincts, different disciplines, different strengths - and converge them to make something which is both challenging and startlingly fresh.

Guest features on the record include Lex Amor, Shabaka Hutchings, Fatima, Rocks FOE, O the Ghost, Mala, Maysia Osu and YUIS.

‘Archetype’ is caught somewhere between the club and the bedroom, both communal and intimate - something common to Joe’s world of jazz, soul and improvisation and Maxwell’s, of the sprawling sounds of hardcore continuum, from jungle to dubstep and drill.

                                Class Of 89

Spring 89: Philippe Cohen Solal discovers Keziah Jones singing with his guitar in front of a Parisian café. More than thirty years after their first demos, the two friends present Class Of 89: an EP of four songs that mixes their respective influences, between electronic beats, electric saturations and acoustic warmth. The project was recorded at Substudioz, with the help of beatmaker and sound engineer Marc "Babylotion" Damblé. From the good mood of the feelgood "Give Thanks & Praises" to the revisited afro-beat of "Liberation, Elevation", Class of 89 makes us hear what the music of friendship and creative freedom could sound like.

                                  Wait Til I Get Over

Durand Jones’s Wait ‘Til I Get Over is a memoir and a love letter. It is the story of Jones’s life, his growth and revelations, the wisdom of his hometown and the wisdom he could only gain once he left. In it, he writes through Hillaryville’s contradictions: the pristine beauty and the ragged roads; his teenage desire to leave and his adult desire to honor his tangled roots; the plantation history and the ups and downs of the Black community that made homes of this reparation town. “Hometowns have a way of keeping a part of you,” says Jones, “and if I’m making something young-me would be proud of, Hillaryville is a big part of that.” Jones finds something transformative in his memories there and the life he has led since, ultimately claiming and embracing his whole self.

The result is vulnerable, personal, touching on Jones’s relationship to church life, to his mother, to his queerness, to his worth. “I wish I could tell my younger self ‘you don’t have to stick to the dreams people have for you,’” says Jones, “’you can dream bigger. You are more than capable, you are more than able. I think about some nerdy punk kid in the rural south who needs to hear that now.’” Wait ‘Til I Get Over does exactly that.

                                    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Jones' solo endeavour here shows echoes of the deep American Soul his 'Durand Jones & The Indications' project is rich with, but filled with a warm, excited, and mildly chaotic jubilance. There are uplifting moments of gospel euphoria and brittle, soulful minimalism but always with Jones's impeccable songwriting style and unmistakeable voice.

                                    Caleb Landry Jones

                                    Gadzooks Vol. 2

Don't let the prestigious acting career fool you, Caleb Landry Jones is a bonafide musical maverick. And on his forthcoming release Gadzooks Vol. 2 he places himself in a lineage of outsider artists, many with only a thin thread tethering them to this reality, who are capable of reaching into the cosmic realms of imagination and bringing back a musical masterpiece. And while most artists don't save some of the best music of their career for an album with Vol. 2 in the title, Jones is an artist for whom chronology is a slippery substance.

The album was recorded with Nic Jodoin in the famed Valentine Recording Studios simultaneous with the mixing of his debut album The Mother Stone. The team invited a slew of heavy hitting musicians to the studio to contribute to the magic. The resulting album sounds a bit like pink elephants in cowboy hats making asmr... at least for the first 20 seconds before it seamlessly changes entirely.

One of Jones's greatest musical gifts is his ability to cover a vast energetic and sonic landscape, with a wide array of instrumentation and vocal stylings over a wholly unique song structure, in a way that feels cohesive and euphoric. And while all his records have an ecstatic quality Gadzooks Vol 2. is perhaps his most soothing and sublime collection to date. Each song has at least a dozen ear worming hooks, all so satisfying you feel a deep longing as they fade until you realize they are being woven into yet another groove-laden, toe-tapping peak. A continual mic drop on an orgasmic wonder wheel.

And given the chameleonic quality to the music we asked Caleb Landry Jones to introduce you to the album himself so here are some of his thoughts: "I'm aware of only half the picture. It comes down upon me like a heavy rain. The psycho Deli is out of mustard and all the Porn Stars won’t leave their homes. I’m out only to get myself, but don’t get in the way. The bugs which throw themselves at windows rarely get their say. "

                                        Vade Mecum

Glenn Jones is a unique player in the world of solo guitar music. Steeped in both American Primitive guitar music as well as rock and experimental music, Glenn Jones creates rich sonic tapestries with a distinct and stirring voice.

Endlessly curious, Jones has spent the better part of four decades exploring the boundaries of expression and storytelling with the guitar and banjo.

On ‘Vade Mecum’, Jones draws on his personal history to tell stories with elaborate musical detail and emotional weight.

Exploring the complexity of personal experience, emotions and our shared histories, ‘Vade Mecum’ finds Jones painting his music in boundaryless colours, captivatingly vivid.

To date, the album has sold nearly 30 million times, and has garnered multiple awards, including no less than eight Grammys®. This coming February marks this landmark album’s 20th anniversary and, to celebrate, Blue Note/UMe has worked with the artist and her team on a special collection that will reveal for the first time the full story of the making of this now-classic album.

                                            Mamas Gun

                                            Cure The Jones

Mamas Gun animate the spirit of conscious ‘70s soul on bold and big-hearted new album, 'Cure The Jones'. Out ofthe turbulence of the last two years comes the fifth album from UK-based soul outfit Mamas Gun - a lush, nuancedand expansively contemporary meditation on a world turned upside down, embedded in the classic soul traditionof Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye.

Building on 2018 album Golden Days and the band’s status as a world-renownedlive act, 11-track opus Cure The Jones represents Mamas Guns’ most complete and powerful work to date - ajoyous and sophisticated exposition of song-craft, that explores themes of love, loss, life through the most pressingsocial and political issues of the day. Written and produced during the pandemic by Mamas Gun frontman AndyPlatts with additional intricate soundscaping from drummer Chris Boot, Cure The Jones was recorded direct to tapewith an array of analogue gear at Platts’ home studio in just three days, focussing the soulful energy of the bandinto a coherent gospel-tinged whole.

“Rather wonderful music that combines classic soul influences with a distinctly modern production approach” - Sunday Times.

Caleb Landry Jones is a continual creator. The Texan-born star found fame as an actor - you’ll recognise him from key roles in X-Men: First Class, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, amongst others - but music is perhaps his first love, and his source of greatest comfort. A chance encounter with famed auteur Jim Jarmusch brought him into the orbit of Sacred Bones, and the stalwart independent released Caleb’s 2020 debut album The Mother Stone. Psychedelic in a defiantly non-retro way, this indulgent, freewheeling trip won critical acclaim, but masked a secret - he’d already finished another album.

Filming alongside Tom Hanks in dystopian themed Finch, Caleb found himself writing during those long evenings after the shoot in locations across New Mexico, idling away his hours by focusing on creativity. “I need it,” he says, “I’ve tried working without it. On one acting job, I intentionally didn’t bring a guitar to try and do it without music... but that didn’t last long. I need to create something - it could be a drawing, it could be a song - because otherwise I feel like I’m wasting time. Which is something I do plenty of on my own!”

With his creative faculties burning, Caleb knew he had to get straight back into the studio when filming stopped. Linking with the same cast who formed The Mother Stone, he resumed his partnership with producer Nic Jodoin, based out of the elegant Valentine Recording Studio in Los Angeles. A studio steeped in history - everyone from Bing Crosby to Frank Zappa worked there - he interrupted mixing sessions for his own debut album in order to focus on something different.

Gadzooks Vol. 1 is unlike anything you’ve heard before - comparisons range from Skip Spence’s fractured masterpiece Oar through to skewed troubadour Robyn Hitchcock, via John Lennon’s black moods on The White Album and Frank Zappa’s caustic surrealism. Recording to tape, Caleb would hack away at each take, re-assembling the songs like Escher diagrams. “It’s like when you’re swimming in the pool,” he smiles, “and you’re doing a bit of butterfly, and then that gets old after a while. So then you start doing breaststroke, and then that gets old after a while. I think it’s just a reaction from the place where we were before.”

Part of a flood-tide of creativity - as its title suggests, a second half to this album is already on the horizon - Gadzooks Vol. 1 is thrilling, shocking, and wonderfully entertaining. Each song starts and finishes in entirely unique places, often totally divorced from each other. “I’m trying to write something very simple,” he says, “And it gets really abstract because I don’t know any other way.”

Instrumental beat record from multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer and hip-hop DJ Stimulator Jones, curated with Stones Throw founder Peanut Butter Wolf. ‘Low Budget Environments Striving For Perfection’ is comprised of atmospheric hip-hop beats, mainly using a Yamaha SU700. Focussed and singular in style, direction and execution yet occupying a suitably stoned, hazy and liminal area which gives way to psychedelic day dreams amd optimistic moods.

Stimulator Jones counts Billie Eilish as a fan - she has posted his track ‘Soon Never Comes’ multiple times on her socials. For fans of Dan Kye, Matt Martians, DãM-FunK, Mndsgn, Jitwam, DJ Harrison, Swarvy, Butcher Brown etc.

Barry says: Super chill syncopated beats and lo-fi instrumental hip-hop business here from Stimulator Jones, swinging between glitchy cut-up scratches and scattered MPC swing. It's a brilliantly psychedelic and brilliantly constructed set of gems.

                                                    Durand Jones & The Indications

                                                    Private Space

Private Space, the group’s third album, is a previously untapped vibe at the heart of The Indications. Pushing beyond the boundaries of the funk and soul on their previous releases, Private Space unlocks the door to a wider range of sounds and launches boldly into a world of synthy modern soul and disco beats dotted with strings. It’s an organic, timeless record that’s as fresh as clean kicks and familiar as your favorite well-worn LP.

Developed after being apart for much of the year, Private Space is creatively explosive and delights in upending expectations. Its 10 tracks are both an escapist fantasy and a much-needed recentering after a tumultuous 2020. Throughout, The Indications highlight a collective resiliency – as well as the power of a good song to be a light in the darkness.

Durand Jones and The Indications have long provided the soulful soundtrack for such deep thoughts, both on stage and on your turntable. But as the world slowly resets from the chaos of the past year, Durand Jones and The Indications’ Private Space is arriving at just the right time.

Barry says: It was always a brilliantly inventive maelstrom of sound emanating from a Durand Jones release, bridging the (admittedly small) gap between funk and soul, but this time sees them broaden their horizons into a wonderfully realised and perfectly weighted groove-laiden disco masterpiece. A stunning and completely essential outing.

Recorded in Busan, Republic of Korea by former US special agent MB Jones, ROK Spy documents both his stay in a country on the verge of a nuclear conflict and his mission there (for obvious confidential reasons, the purpose of this mission is only to be referred to in an elusive way). While most of his personal belongings have disappeared – or, more likely, been destroyed – we are very thankful for the safe receipt of a USB stick containing 7 songs recorded in Autumn 2017, alongside a drawing and a few handwritten notes. We are proud to now be able to share these with you.

In order to do so, we hastily came up with a label. The circumstances under which it was born lead us into calling it “Drama”. This release is DRAMA1.

The content of this LP is a seemingly disparate set of pop-not-pop tunes, flirting with dance music on songs like the apocalyptical disco Nuclear War or the bizarre and mind puzzling boogie Pusan Perimeter. Though it is quite hard to put words on MB Jones’s productions (one may accurately call it an “oddball” of a record), his musical testimony may sit somewhere in-between Holger Czukay’s most narrative pieces and Arthur Russel’s most cheerful moments, sharing with these two brilliant musicians a genuine feeling of intimacy emanating from each second of his songs. The only thing that may be said without a doubt is that these 7 songs are the product of someone whose ear has been attentive and receptive to all sorts of contemporary musical genres (from trap to experimental electronic music and EDM).

It’s still not clear whether the cryptic lyrics evoke situations which already occurred, whether they are oracles, some insider’s warnings or whether they are the product of a mind in a hallucinatory state. On Poison Pill – the closing song – he is particularly ambiguous : “the CIA bought me a trip / I put the tab under my lip / They want to build a shopping mall / On the DMZ wall”. We’ll leave the interpretation to you.

Patrick says: The inaugural release on Antinote's Drama offshoot comes from ex pat musician MB Jones, who offers an odd-pop reportage from Busan, South Korea. Inventive and irresistible, 'Rok Spy' is a masterpiece of colour-soaked weirdo-wave and surrealist synth-pop and it's heading straight into heavy rotation round these parts.

THIS IS A BLACK FRIDAY RELEASE AVAILABLE ONLINE ONLY ON FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27TH FROM 6PM.
                                                        LIMITED TO ONE PER PERSON.

Throughout their career, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings remained in high demand both publicly and privately to recreate and often re-imagine songs by other artists. More often than not, these covers were recorded by request – commissioned for placement in movies, television programs, tribute albums, or for samples. This album compiles some of their most popular as well as never-before-heard renditions.

Though the band has mostly built their career on a prolific catalog of originals, these forays into other artists’ compositions lay bare their gift for arrangement and the unmatched studio prowess that earned them their reputation as The Baddest Band in the Land.

                                                        The Mother Stone

“I think most of it takes place in dreams,” Caleb Landry Jones says of his debut solo album, The Mother Stone. “I’m talking more about dreams than I am about what’s happened in the physical realm. Or I’m talking about both, and you’re not sure what’s what.”

Caleb Landry Jones was born in Garland, Texas in 1989 and comes from a long line of fiddle players. Three, maybe four generations back, on his mother’s side. His grandfather wrote jingles for commercials, his mother was a singer-songwriter who taught piano lessons in the house, and his father was a contractor who did a lot of work for the Dallas music-equipment retailer Brook Mays and knew a guy if you needed a bass or a banjo. But Jones is not sure if you can hear any of this in his music and he does not play the fiddle.

Jones has been writing and recording music since age 16, around the same time he started acting professionally. Played in a band called Robert Jones for a minute, lost his guitar player to higher education, moved into his own place, and broke up with somebody, at which point the songs really started coming hard and fast.

“I started playing guitar and playing more keys,” he says, “and then started writing record after record after record after record, because I didn’t know what to do with myself. It was a good way of healing. And it felt like as soon as I started doing it, it felt like it needed to happen all the time.”

In the ensuing years he’d spend a lot of time carrying unrecorded songs around in his head like goldfish in a bag, waiting for a chance to record them in marathon sessions in his parents’ barn. “You gotta play the songs every day, or every two or three days, to keep ‘em,” he says. “Otherwise I forget them.” Sometimes the ideas fuse together, one chapter to the next; this is how songs grow into sevenplus-minute epics like the ones on The Mother Stone. His back catalog is around seven hundred songs deep— a whole discography of full albums, most of them unheard outside the barn, at least for now.

In 2012 Durand Jones left his small-town in Louisiana, alto saxophone in tow, for the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. “Being a singer was never part of the plan,” Jones admits. But soon enough he found his way in front of a rowdy rock-n-roll band belting out a rambunctious rendition of “Dock Of The Bay,” to a basement full of drunken undergrads. That rowdy band unfolded into The Indications which includes founding members Aaron Frazer (drums, lead vocals) and Blake Rhein (guitar).

Inspired by a handful of dusty and obscure 45s bearing names like The Ethics, Brothers of Soul and The Icemen, The Indications set out to make a record steeped in heavy drums, blown-out vocals, and deep grooves. Gathered around a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder and a case of Miller HighLife, the group spent their Sunday evenings recording into the early hours of the morning. The result is their modern soul masterpiece Durand Jones & The Indications (Dead Oceans/Colemine Records).

With comparisons from Charles Bradley, Lee Fields to Al Green, this young band are now at the forefront of 60’s soul revival. Their sweaty, fiery live shows have earned them a reputation for giving it their all each night which can be witnessed on Durand Jones & The Indications Live Vol. 1. Available for the first time on limited translucent blue vinyl, the album includes tracks from their debut and deep cut soul covers fans have become accustomed

                                                          Yawny Yawn

At the end of 2018, Bill Ryder-Jones released the critically acclaimed Yawn – his beautiful fourth album. He has now reimagined the songs from Yawn, this time with only vocals and piano, opening an even more intimate window onto his world. Taking inspiration from The Beach Boys, Bill has titled this alternative version of the record Yawny Yawn.

In his own inimitable style, Bill Ryder-Jones says: “I can't remember why I thought it was a good idea to make a piano version of Yawn, I presume at some point I felt that the original had too much pep. Was actually quite fun to make although I've since developed a dislike for the way my hands look”.

Similarly to Yawn, the album artwork for Yawny Yawn features a family photo. Bill adds: “Much like the artwork for Yawn, this photo just looked like it should be an album cover. Whereas Yawn featured my brother, our babysitter and myself in the background, the artwork for Yawny Yawn shows me at my aunt's house aged 3 and playing my keyboard.

                                                            Kicks

Kicks is an eclectic album of ten cover songs - from "Mack The Knife" written in 1928 for a German musical (known in the U.S. as The Threepenny Opera) that became a jazz standard, to "Bad Company" the eponymous theme song for the British rock band written in 1974. The arrangement and instrumentation, by producer Michael Napolitano (Ani DiFranco), provides a fresh and modern sonic infusion on every song. Rickie Lee Jones skyrocketed to fame in 1979 when as a barely known artist she appeared on Saturday Night Live. Performing her biggest hit “Chuck E’s In Love” in her trademark red beret, Time Magazine instantly dubbed her “the Duchess of Coolsville.” Since then she has gone on to win two Grammy Awards, appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone twice, and was included in VH1’s 100 Greatest Women of Rock & Roll.

                                                              Durand Jones & The Indications

                                                              American Love Call

Durand Jones & the Indications aren’t looking backwards. Helmed by foil vocalists in Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND the Impressions. Even with an aesthetic steeped in the golden, strings-infused dreaminess of early ‘70s soul, the Indications’ sophomore LP, American Love Call, is planted firmly in the present, with the urgency of this moment in time.

The Indications’ 2016 self-titled debut was the product of friends who met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington, In., recorded for $452.11, including a case of beer. American Love Call, the band’s sophomore LP is instead the record the Indications dreamed of making, fleshed out with strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in songwriting.

Blending a slew of influences from years spent crate-digging, guitarist Blake Rhein says the Indications approach songs in the same way hip-hop producers do, as likely to pull inspiration from ‘70s folk-rock or classic R&B as they are Nas’ Illmatic.

“Did I expect to do this shit once I got out of college? Hell no,” Jones relays, laughing. “Totally not. But this is what God is telling me to do – move and groove. So I’m gonna stay in my lane.”

Barry says: A brilliantly emotive and smoothly contrasting duo of voices over this classic soul, brought to the modern day with crisp, clean production and the perfectly sunny songwiting Durand Jones has become known for. From mournful, lost-love ballads to swinging, dancefloor ditties, this is yet another mindblowing LP from Jones & co.

                                                                11. How Can I Be Sure (feat. Aaron Frazer)
                                                                12. True Love

Yawn is a buckle-up and knuckle-down listen that rewards the listeners’ attention with motifs and melodies that play hide and seek but never fail to deliver on those between-the-lines verities. This musical belief of delayed gratification is something Bill learnt from classical music as a child, from Elgar and Debussy in particular – and over the long hall of his short life, you can hear these riches being polished on Yawn. Most of the 10 songs clock-in over the 5 minute mark and this wide-angle lens affords us time to interpret and translate meaning – or just to revel in it.

Multi-instrumentalist, producer, string-arranger and composer Bill Ryder-Jones has had a career spanning 15 years, a rarity in a world that so often looks to the new. From his musical interpretation of Italo Calvino’s ‘If On A Winters Night A Traveller' (If… in 2011), 2013’s A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart, the acclaimed West Kirby County Primary (2015) and now to Yawn, Bill has constantly widened his scope, weaving in an overarching sense of authenticity, intimacy and wryness as he goes.

Yawn was recorded and produced entirely by Bill himself, with a little help from friends including guest vocals from The Orielles and Our Girl, cello by Rod Skip and mixing by Craig Silvey (Portishead, The Horrors, Arcade Fire). Bill has also been steadily building up a list of album production credits for other musicians including Our Girl, Hooton Tennis Club, Brooke Bentham and Holly Macve, who he records at his own place in West Kirby, aptly titled Yawn Studios.

Stimulator Jones’ music never draws on just one place or time, instead dipping in and out of classic R&B / Soul styles from the 1970s and 1980s to the present day. On his debut album, ‘Exotic Worlds And Masterful Treasures’, Stimulator Jones’ elastic voice and instrumental grooves evoke the heady feel of R&B favourites like Rick James, K-Ci & JoJo and The Gap Band. The album, which was originally released in 2016, received praise from The Philadelphia Inquirer, who called it, “Smartly restrained music steeped in the Deep South” and Paste, who said, “With a tingling rasp that screams James Brown and coos Otis Redding, Jones simply has to be heard to be believed on these vintage R&B pleas.” Detroit Metro Times furthered, “Modern soul that pulls with as much power as Lee Fields and Charles Bradley.” Of their debut, the band reflects, “Three years ago we spent every Sunday in our basement with a 4-track tape machine and a goal: record an album inspired by not only the ubiquitous titans of soul music but also the should-have-beens and the never-weres. With that modest target in mind, we released the record and booked one show marking the occasion. The reception we saw was both humbling and invigorating, and what started as a recording project, became a touring unit with larger aspirations.”

Released on the anniversary of her passing, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings' final studio album, Soul of a Woman is a lush, orchestral masterpiece. A true testament to the life and career of Daptone's fearless leader and one of the world's greatest performers.

In the year prior to her death from pancreatic cancer in 2016, Sharon Jones toured and performed tirelessly, and was also the subject of Miss Sharon Jones!, an acclaimed documentary by Oscar-Winning director Barbara Kopple. Yet somehow, the beloved and heroic soul singer found time to complete a studio album. Soul of a Woman features eleven songs which reveal that the emotion, dynamics, and drama of Jones' voice remained at full power until her final days. The songs on Soul Of A Woman exemplify two distinct sides of the band’s sound. Side One showcases grittier, bluesier material like "Matter Of Time" and "Sail On!," giving Sharon the room to flex her vocal prowess and creating a "liveness" that few studio albums posses. Side Two takes on a more sophisticated orchestral mood. Tracks like "When I Saw Your Face" and "These Tears (No Longer For You),” capture a soft vulnerability in Sharon's vocals that draws you deep inside, and yet they remain nuanced with the signature toughness that never allow you to forget she's steering the ship. The finished product is an album that captures a band and a singer at their peak.

OST" arrives not a week after the unique artist's untimely passing. The film, directed by two-time Academy Award winner, Barbara Kopple, follows the dynamic front-woman through her 2013 battle with cancer and her triumphant return to the stage around the release of "Give The People What They Want". The soundtrack, featuring the exclusive "I'm Still Here" and a live recording of "His Eye On The Sparrow" in Sharon's local church in Georgia, boasts a nice selection of tracks ranging from her early singles on Daptone alongside tracks from the band's 2014 release - Give the People What They Want. Much like the film, the soundtrack gives you an intimate, candid look into the life of a woman who refused to be defined by the challenges she faced. Packed to the rafters with the full range of emotions, this set presents an artist at her peak and a fitting farewell to fans everywhere.

                                                                  Hoops - Inc. Wet Remix

37 Adventures are proud to present ‘Hoops’, the new single from Jones.

Raised in East London, at an early age Jones began to turn her most private diary entries into songs. Since then she’s been gradually letting others into the world she’s created; namely XL’s resident producer Rodaidh McDonald and multifaceted Ninja Tune artist Raffertie, plus alt-pop mastermind (and brother of Jai) A K Paul.

‘Hoops’ has been co-produced by rising talents XO and Josh Record. It’s a gutsy, introspective, innovative track about heartbreak wrapped up in an intrically layered production that references grime and electronica in its R&B / pop styling.

With one of the most anticipated debut albums of the year, the Jimmy Fallon-approved Brooklyn trio Wet bring their minimalist, beat driven R&B production to ‘Hoops’ on this intimate remix that strips the original back to a skittering ballad.

‘Hoops’ is pressed on a hand-stamped 12” vinyl and is backed with the original version of the Jones track.

                                                                  TRACK LISTING

                                                                  Hoops (Wet Remix)
                                                                  Hoops

There has been an issue with barcode on the limited vinyl version and so it has been pulled until this is resolved. We should have it back in stock again later in the week. Sorry!

‘West Kirby County Primary’ - written and recorded by Bill Ryder-Jones in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house in West Kirby before being filtered through Liverpool’s legendary Parr Street Studios - is the third full length album from Bill Ryder-Jones and finds him fronting a classic band set-up.

Each of ‘West Kirby County Primary’s ten tracks offers a sneaked glance into his private world; they eavesdrop on a set of encounters that go about “turning stories into beautiful truth” set to glorious molten melody that explodes like fireworks over water.

It all adds up to a remarkable record by one of Domino’s most cherished musicians - a musical polymath as at ease on stage with the Manchester Camerata (where he performed as part of the Manchester Literature Festival last Autumn) or on live guitar duties with Arctic Monkeys as he is on production duties with Hooton Tennis Club and The Wytches.

The follow-up to ‘A Bad Wind Blows In My Heart’ was produced by Ryder-Jones and mixed by James Ford.

Celebrating 25 years as Manchester’s leading independent record shop, this book asks ‘What makes Piccadilly Records so special?’

Whilst music is the heart of Piccadilly Records, the soul is most definitely the people.

Self-published by Piccadilly Records’ Michael and Gwen Riley Jones, this photo-book is a celebration of people, place and music.

Alongside current and ex-staff, the book features a host of Manchester musicians and DJs including Johnny Marr, Marc Riley, Tim Burgess and Duncan Wallis (of Dutch Uncles) and regular customers, all of whom have played an integral role in the history of the shop.

‘This book is a testament to the Piccadilly Records attitude to business. It’s not about just the staff who work there or the ‘pop’ stars and DJs that pass through. It’s about the music lovers that come in on a regular basis putting money through the tills and buying all those inspiring albums.” Richard Hector-Jones

From the relentless stomping entrance of 'Retreat!', the bounce of the anthemic 'We Get Along', and the irresistible syncopations of 'Stranger to My Happiness', straight through to the intoxicating groove of 'Slow Down, Love'. It is also arguably the most impressive studio work to date from Grammy-winning engineer and Daptone co-owner Gabriel Roth (aka Bosco Mann) all written and recorded at Daptone’s analogue House Of Soul studio / headquarters in the heart of Bushwick, Brooklyn where Sharon herself wired the electrical outlets.

The Viper Label and Mellowtone Records are excited to announce the release of Soothing Music For Stray Cats by Edgar ‘Jones’ Jones; now available on vinyl for the very first time. The seminal album was originally released in 2005 to much critical acclaim, gaining plaudits from fellow artists and reviewers alike, with Noel Gallagher declaring it ‘the best sounding record to come out of Liverpool ever’. That’s not opinion… that’s a fact”.

The exquisitely eclectic nature of Soothing Music For Stray Cats garnered a dedicated following of admirers across the world and a rich supply of superlatives from the music press; “Stunning” (Mojo) “Mesmerising… Remarkable” (Record Collector), “Liverpool’s answer to Dr John” (Uncut) were just a handful of the words of praise lavished upon Edgar’s debut opus. The NME said: “Listening to this becomes an aural history of the world’s coolest music’’ and it took the Number One spot in their ‘100 Greatest Albums You’ve Never Heard’ in 2012.

The album was recorded and produced by Edgar in Liverpool, on an eight-track recorder given to him by none other than Johnny Marr, and the original fourteen tracks are now available for the first time I in glorious heavyweight 180 gram black vinyl. Jenny Dalton’s artwork has been re-imagined by The Studio of Ezra.

Edgar’s musical path began as front man of Liverpool band The Stairs, celebrated by the likes of Elvis Costello, signed to Go! Discs, then home of Paul Weller and The La’s. Their debut single 'Weed Bus' and following album Mexican R 'n' B, became classics of their time and the band have recently enjoyed a highly anticipated reunion. Through The Isrites and on to The Big Kids, Edgar’s muse was restless, but by 2005, he seemed to have found the perfect palate for his influences . Jazz, R ’n’ B, soul, and Doo Wop were smeared across ‘Soothing Music For Stray Cats’ in glorious technicolour.

As an artist in his own right Edgar has since achieved legendary cult status and has played with the great and the good including Paul Weller, St Etienne and Lee Mavers, “A form of National Service” to quote Edgar.
A triumph of eclecticism, a victory for perseverance and passion and without doubt a fine listen. A timeless masterpiece.

Rick Jones / Michael Cole / Michael Jessett

                                                                        Fingerbobs - Original Television Music

At last! The classic music from this important TV series is now available! Yes, to many people who grew up near a television in the 1970s and 1980s, Fingerbobs was a curious, formative and hugely inspiring series. Only 13 episode were made but were often repeated. It starred the audacious Fingermouse, a host of his paper friends (Scampi, Gulliver, Flash), and was fronted by folk musician, actor and former Play School presenter Rick Jones as “Yoffy”. Each episode involved simple craft, music and a story or fable based on that week’s theme (such as sound, wood, shapes and shadows). The whole series was conceived, created and modelled in a briliant home made style by the legendary husband and wife team Joanne and Michael Cole, the minds behind much of Playschool, the books and TV series Bod, and Ragtime.

The Fingerbobs album has been quite hard to put together; there are no masters and very little paper based archive to speak of, so no set stills, no paper puppets. All that really remains are a few scraps of paper in the Cole’s very small archive and the Fingerbobs annual, which contains nothing but pecualir drawings, none that really relate to the show. But, as the album was going to print Lo Cole found an exceptionally rare promotional flyer for the series in 1973 when it was first aired, and this wonderful little gem is what has been used to make the fabulous artwork.

In order to produce a musical album worthy of release, Jonny Trunk entrusted the ears and musical abilities of Jon Brooks (AKA The Advisory Circle) to pull together a musical collage of the whole series. So, we have all the themes, all the songs, all the instrumentals, a scattering of stories too. The music is a touch folky, a little whimsical, classically nostalgic, humble, hip, witty and occasionally camp (Gulliver’s song). Fingerbobs was possibly the last remaining unreleased score from TVs golden era, and finally, thanks to this first ever release, we can now enjoy it whenever or wherever we want. Like in the car with the kids. Which is a very good thing indeed.

                                                                          Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings

                                                                          Soul Time!

"Soul Time!" is an exploration of  the full range of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings' dynamic sound through twelve songs handpicked by the Daptone Records gang, each one a precious exclusive.

The needle drops on "Genuine Pts. 1 & 2", a supercharged funk arrangement that evokes the late Godfather not only with the spirited syncopation of the Dap-Kings rhythms, but also with the raw power of Jones’ voice. "Longer And Stronger", written for Jones' 50th birthday, is a deep mid-tempo soul celebration of the strength and determination with which Sharon Jones has earned her long overdue success. The theme of empowerment pushes on through “He Said I Can”, an energetic stomper belted over an arrangement reminiscent of the Isley Brothers early-70s heyday, and “I’m Not Gonna Cry” brings us back to the raw funk intensity of "Genuine" with a squealing tenor solo and a fiery vocal. .

“What If We All Stopped Paying Taxes?” kicks the second side off with a bang. This mid-tempo groove is accentuated by the conga work of the legendary Johnny Griggs of JB’s fame. And who says Christmas can’t be soulful? Jones et al. make it so over their sought after holiday exclusive, “Ain’t No Chimneys in the Projects”. Next is an energetic romp into Motown intensity with “New Shoes”, a walking-out-the door belter that picks up where "These Boots Were Made For Walking" left off. The record winds up with a deep laid back cover of Shuggie Otis’ psychedelic soul jam “Inspiration Information”.

From the first note to the last, "Soul Time!" confirms this band’s place at the head of the table as the world’s greatest funk and soul showband. Whether you’re a lifetime fan, or just getting turned on, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings’ have yet again made a record that will blow your mind. Get ready world, because It’s Soul Time!

The Edgar Jones Free Peace Thing

                                                                            Stormy Weather

Incendiary debut album from Liverpudlian music legend Edgar Jones' new band Free Peace.

Earlier this year NME dedicated a whole page to Edgar 'Jones' Jones and his classic album from 2005, 'Soothing Music for Stray Cats (Viper).

Free Peace's line-up is completed with Nick Miniski on drums + Stuart Gimblett on Guitar. Their sound is loud and heavy with a touch of soul.
Since touring with Oasis, they have been working on their album making sure it is just right. Edgar in his time has worked with the best - Paul Weller, Johnny Marr and Lee Mavers amongst others.

                                                                              Shake it loose!

                                                                              The Sandwitches

                                                                              Mrs Jones' Cookies

The latest full-length platter by The Sandwitches. San Francisco's Sandwitches have been plugging away at their craft for a couple magical years now, sprinkling their barbed, alluring electric folk briars across unsuspecting gardens in the Bay Area and beyond. Previous releases, such as the swampy ecstasy of "How To Make Ambient Sadcake" and last year's oceanic ouija board of an EP, "Duck Duck Goose!", captured distinct sides of the trio.

"Mrs. Jones Cookies" is here now to unify their uniquely whimsical and creepy vision. "Mrs. Jones' Cookies" pours Sadcake's plaintive bounce into Duck Duck's celestial, mysterious drift, spiking the mix with a side they've previously only hinted at: a playfulness, a comfort. It's the sound of a band at ease with unease. Even when they're plumbing the most desperate depths, there's an unforced confidence in the lonely plucking of guitarists Heidi Alexander and Grace Cooper. The shared vocal duties are where these ladies truly and finally let loose. On "Lightfoot" and single "Summer Of Love", drummer Roxy Brodeur punches out lively, soul-flecked trots, as Grace and Heidi tickle the end of their high and low ranges, returning later to those highs and lows with extra force and bluster, shooting out the lights with aplomb.

Though they began in 1996 as primarily an instrumental rock band, each of the masterful tracks on "This Is How It Is Lost" features vocals, adding a new dimension for those familiar with their sound. Most of these feature vocals from Eddie Robert, who also plays with I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness, whilst another features Craig McCaffrey, lately also of The American Analog Set.
