30 Door Key

The Autumn People

New out on Feral Child is a super limited 7” EP from Italian Kosmische | Library artist Alessio Bosco, under his 30 DOOR KEY moniker.

A wonderful 5 trk 45 heavy on Hauntology vibes, samples, nods to minimal electronica and kosmische. With one foot firmly within the “long lost ‘70s supernatural TV themes” camp, the record is superbly and consistently fresh and ambitious- and comes hugely recommended to devotees of all the above, Trunk records heads and minimal synth, electronica nuts.

It looks as cool as it sounds too; screened black board sleeves, with inserts galore and hand numbered to 187 copies on black wax.

    PRRSR

    30

'30' is a wilfully jubilant, beautifully composed collection of pieces that skilfully combine the best parts of classic rock, wandering psychedelia and upbeat modern pop music. 'Art Isn't Subjective (Mark Said)' for example is rife with cultural reference points, the immediate one of which is late 60's UK psychedelia (that Floyd Jangle or clever Beatles time signature changes) but it doesn't make any of the pieces here sound like a pastiche, rather a well implimented, tributary collection of influences.

Elsewhere, pieces like 'A Bit Like Door' or 'Our Time' flirt with arrhythmic passages and instrumental non sequiturs, but it always comes back to the deeply melodic, warmly emotive core of PRRSR's sound. Really well written, beautifully produced and nicely presented all round. And it's a fiver!

          Autechre

          Draft 7.30 - 2023 Reissue

This, Autechre's seventh LP, probably won't see legions of new fans flocking their way, but is another essential installment for everyone who's followed their progress so far. Far more accessible than "Confield", this LP is sometimes subtle and atmospheric, while at other times rhythmically complex and abstract.

            The Soup Dragons

            Janice Long Session 30.06.87

The Soup Dragons’ status as indie-dance pioneers is often overlooked; first, though, came a more rocky sound, as evidenced on their fourth session for the BBC (and the second for longtime supporter, the much missed Janice Long). Can’t Take No More, however, was actually one of their earliest songs; a re-recorded version went to No.1 on the indie charts and just missed the Top 50 in the UK. Session includes another future single in Kingdom Chairs and the instrumental Cow Nest, never before released. Sleeve notes by Ross Sinclair; mastered by Sean Dickson. Includes download codes and a set of postcards.

              Shakespear's Sister

Hormonally Yours - 30 Year Anniversary Edition

To celebrate the 30-year Anniversary of Shakespear's Sister’s seminal album. ‘Hormonally Yours’, London Records announce a special edition release across multiple formats.

A double Platinum and Top 3 UK album, ‘Hormonally Yours’ secured Siobhan Fahey and Marcella Detroit a place in British pop history - spawning the single ‘Stay’, which spent a staggering eight consecutive weeks at the top of the UK charts - and won the duo an Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contemporary Song Collection.

‘Hormonally Yours’ also features singles ‘Goodbye Cruel World’ and ‘I Don’t Care’, tackles friendships gone wrong on ‘My Sixteenth Apology’, powerful, dangerous attraction on ‘Emotional Thing’ and documents a friend’s coming out on ‘Are We In Love Yet?’ Fan favourite ‘The Trouble With Andre’, the fullthrottle glam-blues of ‘Cat Woman’ and glorious finale ‘Hello (Turn Your Radio On)’ is the album’s glorious finale: an exhalation; a glorious, earthshuddering moment that recalls the epic melancholy of David Bowie’s ‘Five Years’ and The Beatles’ ‘A Day In The Life’.

Shakespears Sister’s second album, ‘Hormonally Yours’ provided the perfect encapsulation of the duo’s musical ying and yang; a deftly delivered balance of pop melody with a spikey alternative darkness.

                This Poison!

                John Peel Session 30.11.87

“I love this session. Four great songs full of hooks. All of them under the three-minute mark. La-la-la singalongs. Shiny guitars. What more do you want?” Gideon Coe

From Perth in Scotland, This Poison! released two classic late 80s singles on the Wedding Present’s Reception Records and that was it. Apart from this stunning Peel session, featuring four songs that never saw the light of day on vinyl during the band’s lifetime. “Rip-roaring stuff!” said John Peel, and he wasn’t wrong. Package also includes download codes, sleeve notes from Derek Moir and a set of postcards – among them one from the great man himself sent to the band, a must for any Peel devotees.

                  4. It'll All Work Out (Peel Session) 02:07

30/70 and Rhythm Section team up once more to deliver their most ambitious remix package to date. Call outs to friends and family of the label and collective offered up a selection of some of the most exciting electronic music producers in the scene and the fruits of the collaboration have arrived.

The remix package continues 30/70’s practice of rebirthing their music in a contemporary club sound but this time takes that intention a step further, veering into unexpected and more experimental territory for the band, calling in a new era for their musical endeavours.

The record opens with a duo that need no introduction, label legends Chaos In The CBD work their magic on “Tastes Like Freedom”, playing on Josh Kelly’s drawn out noir-esque sax notes and Allysha’s whispering tones to create a sultry and sophisticated house number in their typically infectious style.

Next up Utrecht native Carista enters with the sound of the Netherlands for a new wave electro trip fresh off her BBC Radio 1 residency.

Tornado Wallace takes us straight to a hot pink sunset on the long lost festival floor with his ‘Red Face Mix’ of “Tastes Like Freedom”.

Closing out are the cerebral and ethereal sounds of Yu Su’s ‘Midnight Blossom Remix’, where the Kaifeng-born composer, DJ and sound artist continues her exploration of ‘fourth world’ ambience and left-field dance music.

Over the last few years, 30/70 have become something of a supergroup: with Allysha Joy, Ziggy Zeitgeist, Josh Kelly and Matthew Hayes all soaring as solo artists and band leaders. Individual talents aside, there’s nothing quite like the 30/70 collective united as one unstoppable force; and the synergy is palpable in this tantalizing tour-de force.

                  Adele

                  30

30 is the first new music from Adele since the release of her third studio album 25 in November 2015. The album is produced with former collaborators Greg Kurstin, Max Martin and Shellback and Tobias Jesso Jr., as well as new collaborators Inflo and Ludwig Goransson.

                    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Adele is back! This time following her naming convention from 21 and 25, bringing in a more mature and thematically rich selection of heartfelt balladry on the wonderful '30'. It's not particularly my cup of tea, granted but there's no denying she's a hugely talented and important artist and this is definitely the best work of her career.

Believe In Magic - Heavenly Recordings: The First 30 Years - Working Men's Club Exclusive Edition

We're super excited to be able to get our hands on some of these limited edition version of this fantastic book.

This edition features an exclusive 7" single
                       - Angel (part 1) b/w Angel (part 2) - from Piccadilly favourites Working Men’s Club. They blew us away with their live shows last year and we can't wait for their debut album.

You may have heard Angel in all its 12 minute glory in WMC’s legendary live sets. Here’s the studio version, produced by Ross Orton, split over both sides of a 7”.

Heavenly was already a state of mind. Seemed like the right time to make it something really special. We were all deeply immersed in music that we loved. None of us could believe our fucking luck, really. (Jeff Barrett)

It was thirty years ago today - or thereabouts - that Heavenly came to be. In celebration of this big ol’ birthday comes Believe in Magic - a chronicle not only of Foxbase Alpha, Working Men’s Club and 28 of the releases in between that got the label to where it is today, but also of the haircuts, nights down the pub, pencil-eraser-carvings, cheese toasties, acid houses, Sunday Socials and lost Weekenders - Yorkshire and otherwise - that are as much a part of its story.

As Jeff Barrett puts it at the beginning of the book, if there’s a continuous theme that runs through all of this, I think it’s that everything comes down to conversations with people about music. It might seem like it all starts with someone on one side of the counter who is selling you something, or someone writing excitedly in a magazine telling you about a band you need to hear, but I don’t think I’ve ever really seen things as one-way transactions. It’s more an ongoing dialogue, one that never really stops and helps to build up this growing soundtrack to our lives, something that’s passed from one person to another. That’s really the ever-present thread. That’s why we still believe in magic.

Though we are three decades distant from The World According to Sly and Lovechild, lineup changes, ups, downs, and a good few office cleanups under the label’s belt, the Heavenly firm continue not to believe their fucking luck; at still being here, keepin’ on keepin’ on doing what they love, and at being able to pass all of this - then, now, and next week - on to you.

Believe in Magic is a fully illustrated history of one of the most colourful and exciting independent British record labels; a label responsible for creating satellite communities of fans around the country and at all the major festivals.
After several years working at Factory and Creation, Heavenly Recordings was set up by Jeff Barrett in 1990 as the acid house revolution was in full swing; early releases set the tone and tempo for the mood of the decade to come - their first release was by perhaps the most revered acid house DJ of them all, Andrew Weatherall; and this was quickly followed by singles from St Etienne and Manic Street Preachers.

Heavenly was always different to other labels; more of a 'club' with a defiant spirit of inclusiveness, and in 1994 they set up The Heavenly Social, which alongside the Hacienda, became perhaps the most famous club in recent British history, where the Chemical Brothers made their name.

Over nearly 200 releases in thirty years Heavenly have consistently produced some of the most exciting music across all genres - dance, acid house, singer-songwriter, psych-garage - and this book collects rare photographs, ephemera, artwork into a celebration of a label that is, alongside Rough Trade and Factory, one of the most beloved institutions on the independent landscape. Running though the book are thirty stories, mostly told in the form of oral history by artists like James Dean Bradfield, Flowered Up, Beth Orton, Doves and Don Letts, which capture the presiding personality of the label, its bands and the people associated with its success.

                      The Gotobeds

                      Debt Begins At 30

Give me a minute or three to extol the virtues of The Gotobeds, the modern rock and roll sensation that has always sounded like they love to play. Never maligned by having the world’s weight on their backs, The Gotobeds - Cary, TFP, Eli and Gavin - return to the fray with their third full lengther, ‘Debt Begins at 30’. The esprit de corps and anxiety-free joy that permeates their other LPs and EPs remains intact. The octane is high-test, the engine still has knocks and pings and the battery is overcharged. The Gotobeds - as Pittsburgh as it gets, the folk music of the Steel City - have more tar for us to swallow.

‘Debt Begins At 30’ is an old-fashioned blast furnace and the liquid iron flows. ‘Debt Begins At 30’ is not ‘pub sop’ in any way or shape. Though I never considered The Gotobeds a band that needed assistance from their peers, ‘Debt Begins At 30’ features outside contributors on every track. The album’s first single, ‘Calquer The Hound’, includes local buddy Evan Richards, and Rob Henry of Kim Phuc. ‘Calquer The Hound’ has euphony, a sly bridge, plenty of trademark bash, and a spacey outro. It’s a sanguine album opener, more Al Oliver than Starling Marte. On ‘Twin Cities’, the lads tap Tracy Wilson, formerly of Dahlia Seed and currently of Positive NO!, to share the vox, and the result is an exuberant pop song proving The Gotobeds benefit from women ruling the scene.

"Twin Cities" is more Dakota Staton than Don Caballero. ‘Debt Begins At 30’, the title trackular, includes the wizardry of Mike Seamans and legend Bob Weston. It’s a brooding romp with tribal beats and slash-and-burn guitar, more Rocky Bleier than Le’Veon Bell. Unsurprisingly, The Gotobeds called partners-in-rock-crime Protomartyr a coupla times, with Joe Casey bolstering ‘Slang Words’ and hook-fiend Greg Ahee shredding on ‘On Loan’. ‘Slang Words’ is a savory wrecking ball with a crunching bite, more of a soft shell crab sandwich from Wholey’s Market than a 4am slop feast at Primanti Brothers. ‘On Loan’ is an anthemic janglefest with high-arcing fret work, more Karl Hendricks (rest his soul) than ‘Weird Paul’ Petroskey. Silkworm guitarist Tim Midyett is tapped on ‘Parallel’, a grand song that enters a world of whimsy, melodic and uncomplicated, more Jaromir Jagr than Sidney Crosby.

The likes of 12XU label boss Gerard Cosloy, Tre Orsi’s Matt Barnhart, the wonderful Victoria Ruiz of Downtown Boys, Pittsburgh wordsmiths Jason Baldinger and Scott MacIntyre, and yours truly strut stuff on other tracks. In my case, I just scream “dross” on ‘Dross’ several times. Good judgment on the part of The Gotobeds to know that’s the best I can do, more Max Moroff than Andrew McCutchen. Anyways, The Gotobeds have quickly reached the veteran stage, but, based upon ‘Debt Begins At 30’, their best days are ahead of them. It’s a pleasure to be associated with such an excellent band.”

                          Jamie Isaac

                          (04:30) Idler

Can you sleep? (04:30) Idler chronicles a personal struggle with insomnia that inspired the album’s title, it combines bossa nova, 70s analog synths and the polymorphous vibrations of London’s new burgeoning jazz scene.

Jamie Isaac is a young producer and songwriter, born in Croydon to Burmese and British parents. He signed to Marathon Artists in 2014 and has been harnessing his sound ever since, operating in the space between jazz, soul, R&B, electronics and hip hop. Across a handful of singles and EPs, as well as a mixtape, his debut album and its follow-up, he has evolved into a formidable artist with a transatlantic following.

Millie says: This might just be the perfect hybrid of synths, hip hop-jazz and electronic sound wrapped up in one record like a present. I can't get enough of the soft dreamy vocals, you need to listen to this it's a beaut!

                            Jah Wobble

The Celtic Poets / Requiem / The Light Programme: The 30 Hertz Albums

Born John Joseph Wardle in Stepney, East London in 1958, Jah Wobble (a name derived from Sid Vicious’ drunken mumblings) first become known to a wider audience as the original bassist in Public Image Ltd (PiL) in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. Departing after two albums, Wobble went on to enjoy a highly prolific and successful solo career, regularly releasing multiple albums in a single year. Jah Wobble not only continued to release an abundance of his own material, but also went on to work with a hugely diverse range of artists including Baaba Maal, Bjork, Primal Scream, Brian Eno, Sinead O’Connor, Julianne Regan, Dolores O’Riordan, Holger Czukay, The Edge and Chaka Demus & Pliers. Jah Wobble’s first three albums on his own 30 Hertz label get the reissue and remastering treatment in this beautifully packaged 3CD set. The release includes the full first three albums, plus non-album bonus material from the period, including the tracks ‘Magical Thought (Radio Edit)’ and ’30 Hertz’. Contains exclusive sleeve notes written by Jah Wobble himself. Newly remastered for this special release.

                              In Dub

Since his days with Public Image Ltd., Jah Wobble has been carving a unique niche on bass guitar, drawing on myriad musical styles for his prolific output of over forty albums and countless collaborations. Following the critical acclaim afforded to last year’s 6-CD box set Redux, Jah Wobble In Dub is an affordable entrée to one aspect of JW’s music, a style with which he is most commonly associated and yet is somehow difficult to define.

Compiled and annotated by Wobble, who has also contributed some of his paintings for the front cover and the booklet, Jah Wobble In Dub picks up where Redux left off, sampling his 30 Hertz catalogue from the mid-1990s onwards while also dipping back into his 80s solo work. In Dub also boasts four brand new recordings. ‘Metamorphosis (Burnt Umber Youth Dub)’ and ‘Inspector Out Of Space (Youth Inner Space Dub)’ are taken from Wobble’s new album with legendary producer Youth, Everything Is Nothing while ‘Forest Funk Dub’ and ‘Forest Gate Dub’ are brand new tracks, also recorded by the new-look Invaders Of The Heart. In addition, In Dub includes a previously unissued mix of ‘The Sweetest Feeling’ from 2007’s Heart & Soul’ album (re-named ‘The Way I Feel’).

"This 6 song symphony of sound juxtaposed with chaos and long stills of almost nothing starts the only way I’d expect it to. The first track “Ballast” comes in with murderous hits, cracks, and drills. It’s hard to put into words exactly what you are listening to. And, that’s what I love about Mr. Cary’s tracks. But, somehow Jeff has forged a signature sound. I have been listening to noise for awhile now. I haven’t hear anything quite like it.

[3:30] as a full body of work is not just a digitally distorted camero with the gas pedal to the floor going through a time warp. It is dynamic and almost peaceful at times. With tracks like “Phosphor” and “Node” where you find yourself lost in an ambient sound scape of breathed gesters and things off in the distance. I admire Jeff’s way of knowing when to hold back or be minimal in his approach while yet still having some sort of rage you can’t quite pinpoint but you know it’s there and you can feel it and it’s about to burst and you like it.

I have seen Jeff live countless times. I got a chance to see him at one of his most recent performances at Club K where he performed a few of these new tracks live. Being a drummer for over 15 years I tend to latch onto the rhythm of any song I hear. Even in noise I somehow subconsciously makeup a beat I bop my head up and down to. I noticed that I didn’t have to magically make an esoteric drum section for Jeff’s performance. It was already there. Tracks like “1001″ make you feel as a drummer or drum machine is being forced through a grinder with a distortion pedal in the chain.

It’s a very purifying experience listening to Jeff Carey‘s works on [3:30]. It’s not for everyone.. But, it sure is hell for noise enthusiasts like me. But, hey.. If you’ve never listened to a “noise” artist before or haven’t gotten down with that scene. Try it out. You might just like this one." - Gutter Magazine.
