Wake Up Applauding

Running elbows in quick from the City of the Big Shoulders with Wake Up Applauding. Delivered loudly, dripping in unintelligible menace with the occasional flash of dark humor, their bathtub mixture of dope-sick guitars claws at your purse, ramming into an unhealthy sense of propulsion and repetition that seems chemical, unreal.

This is villains-plotting-evil kinda punk, mutants in the sewers emerging and wreaking havoc… Mothra shorting out high-voltage power lines and melting, screaming, onto a fleeing populace. Corrosive, driving, repetitive, pissed off, these guys deliver that evil cruisin’ vibe, tight and pushing 100 but with just a rotted off stump of a hand grossing everyone out and shifting gears.

Hailing from Augsburg in Germany, Raphael Schön represents a young generation of producers that draw their own conclusions from the golden days of dance music, whilst injecting his own contemporary flair and fun into proceedings.

On opener "Baerhit" , it's hard to ignore the influence of Todd Terje's "It's The Arps" - with its octave b-line, fizzy synths and steadily rising euphoria. "Do You Like That" pairs a catchy vocal hook to heads-down, driving synth work; reminiscent of Hot Creations or Crosstown Rebels. "Breathe" approaches hydro-foil house with a delicate hand - gliding bass, star-studded arps and sweeping atmosphere tailored perfectly to Running Back's long standing blueprint. "Want Me" possesses plenty of low end throb and trancy inflections - aiming squarely at the big rooms and lazer guided lighting rigs. "Distant City Tranceport" broaches the 'end of night epic' with both confidence and consideration. Finally, "Sometimes I Miss You"; with its heart wrenching vocal, melancholic chord progression and unrelenting energy closes off the EP with a nice emotional touch highlighting the depth of character of this rising producer. With six tracks on offer, it makes the post-Brexit, European import price tag a little easier to digest ;)

Master Plan was the Chicago based dance music project of Pepper Gomez and Tom O’Callahan. Spanning from 1984 to 1986, the groups development is in sync with the dance music scene of Chicago during that era. While their first record „Pushin’ Too Hard“ is a Windy City version of the NYC club music of the time and its European cross-pollination, "Electric Baile" from two years later down the line is almost a quantum jump into house music. With the engineering help of Matt Warren, it bears the marks of Ron Hardy, Chip E, Farley Jackmaster Funk or the WBMX dance party craze, if you will. Here you have remastered and updated versions by Enzo Elia and Gerd Janson. The first ones’ edit attempt of "Electric Baile" ignited this edition. A custom-tailored main mix is completed by a dub and useful bonus beat version to do, what DJs used to do. Concluded by two edits of "Pushin’ Too Hard" by GJ, you get two great slices of yesterday that are still major dance music blue prints today.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Running Back turn their attention to this cheeky number from 1986. Bearing all the hallmarks of Ron Hardy, Chip E, Farley Jackmaster Funk or the WBMX dance party craze; it's an electrified proto-house track that should find plenty of favour across the current landscape.

“I will never stop saying this: fabric means the world to me. After being entrusted to regularly warm up Room 1 at the very twilight of my career, I was offered the chance by our dearly departed brother Shaun Roberts to mix the FABRICLIVE CD in 2012, long before a soul knew of my existence as an artist. It propelled me into the clubbing orbit as a DJ who was able to lean on leftfield sounds; the kind of opportunity that continues to make my head spin. After the release of my debut album ‘Drone Logic’, in 2014 the club asked me to curate my own night, specifying that it cover all corners of my musical sky. I called it Divided Love.

“Today I am gassed to watch as another circle completes itself, ten years on, as Divided Love returns to fabric and, alongside it, a 12” released on fabric Originals. The two-tracker, as with every club record I ever make in fact, has Room 1 coursing through its veins. I know that room like the back of my hand and this is how the room sounds in my skull.” - Daniel Avery

The second release by fabric Originals for fabric’s 25 year anniversary celebrations.

Tiger & Woods return to the clubs yields more sonic fruits from their musical orchard.

"Fake U" kicks off with their trademark cut-n-loop aesthetic sounding remarkably like two other chop-house superstars: Cassius and Soundstream - with funky licks, disco drums and party energy coursing through its edits. "Do It Do Me" ups the anti with added compression and wild filter usage; again not a million miles away from the cult collected Soundstream tracks of yesterday; with some extra fancy breakdown and FX usage to please the modern connoisseur.

Onto side B and "Silly Little Games" employs an army of Daft Punk-era squelches and synth licks to another electro-disco groove for a nice mid-session burner that'll have bodies gyrating nicely. "Wild Stream" concludes with possibly the tightest and snappiest chops and cuts across the 12"'; a highly distilled example of the duo's winning formular that'll keep the post 3AM crowd wiggling manically into the morning sun. Top stuff as always from the iconic pair...

      STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Tiger & Woods hit the greens again, with a uptempo and characterful EP which I have to say reminds me a lot of Soundstream / Soundhack from years ago. That ain't a bad thing - and Tiger & Woods more than do the blueprint justice, four cut-n-splice sample-house future classics to have you gyrating on the floor come the early hours.

Magically delicious, "Lucky Charm" completes Roman Flügel's personal feel-good-tetralogy on Running Back. Joining "Garden Party", "D.I.S.C.O." and "Mega" for a quadrophony of fun.

The lead track comes in three flavours - the main mix displaying all the artifacts in a dizzying spectrum of piano licks, warm bass and jacking drum beats. Add a few timpani rolls and juddering arps and it's easy to fall victim of the overwhelming joy thrown at you... leave your troubles at the door!

The dub mix and perc mix do a good job of highlighting various other elements of the track; the dub obviously focusing on bass and rhythm whilst the perc mix chucks a whole manner of extra percussion into the mix for a fiery track that's perfect as a segue, tension builder or DJ tool!

"Whatever This Is" happens to be our favourite however. Harking back to the sounds explored on The Primitive Painter project (alongside long time collaborator Jörn Elling Wuttke) it's got that undeniable Flügel personality - quirky, jerky, naive and playful - with a brilliant ear for synthesis. Its correspondent "Luv Armour" is a piece of sonic shine that's doing the splits: house, new wave, synth pop and some melancholy for the finishing touches. Perfect late night alternative dance material.

Finally, "Film 4" is the final dish of this lush meal. Referring to the other "Film” tracks on the "Mega" 12" and created during the hard and dark times of closed amusement party parks, it is full of yearning and contemplation; yet executed in that typical Flügel style.
An excellent conclusion to this four part series - highly recommended!

      STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Roman Flügel's been a constant for nearly three decades - always innovating, grooving and playful. This latest EP for Running Back is no exception as he pairs synthesis wizardry with wide-eyed, technicoloured optimism. The Primitive Painter-esque "What This Is" is worth the entrance fee alone in my book.

As part of tici taci's 10 year celebrations, they present a soundclash between Primal Scream and Sons of Slough. Ian Weatherall takes up the story : -

'I was listening to various Primal Scream tracks a while ago and just kept coming back to Running out Of Time - a bonus track on More Light (deluxe version) - and I just really liked it. I was talking to Andrew Innes and Bobby G and asked if anyone had ever done anything with it, and whether we could have a go - just as a studio project, nothing else. They sent us the parts and myself and Duncan Gray had great fun in the studio doing our thing. We sent the results back to the Primals and Bobby really liked it - he asked us if we'd thought about doing a limited edition 12" release .... and here it is'

The 12" has two versions of "Running out Of Time" - firstly a dub version with Jah Wobble inspired bass and plenty of Echodek style action, and then a deep dive version more akin to Crooked man, who the Sons are big fans of. Special limited edition - don't sleep!

Matt says: Sons Of Slough revisit a lost Primal Scream number with deliciously dubby and baggy results.

          Fruit Bats

A River Running To Your Heart

Eric D. Johnson rarely lingers at one location too long. As a kid growing up in the Midwest, Johnson's family moved around a lot, but it wasn't until he became a touring musician years later that motion became a central part of his identity. That transient lifestyle stoked an enduring reverence for the world he watched pass by through a van window. A sense of place is a unifying theme he's revisited with Fruit Bats throughout its many lives. From the project's origins in the late '90s as a vehicle for Johnson's lo-fi tinkering to the more sonically ambitious work of recent years, Fruit Bats has often showcased love songs where people and locations meld into one. It's a loose song structure that navigates what he calls "the geography of the heart." "The songs exist in a world that you can sort of travel from one to another," says Johnson. "There are roads and rivers between these songs."

Those pathways extend straight through the newest Fruit Bats album, aptly titled A River Running to Your Heart. Self-produced by Johnson—a first for Fruit Bats—with Jeremy Harris at Panoramic House just north of San Francisco, it's Fruit Bats' tenth full-length release and one that finds the project in the middle of a creative resurgence. After two decades of making music, hard-earned emotional maturity has seeped into Johnson's songs, resulting in a more complex sound that's connected with audiences like no other previous version of Fruit Bats.

A River Running to Your Heart represents the fullest realization of that creative vision to date. It's a sonically diverse effort that largely explores the importance of what it means to be home, both physically and spiritually. And while that might seem like a peculiar focus for an artist who's constantly in motion, for Fruit Bats, home can take many forms—from the obvious to the obscure. Lead single "Rushin' River Valley" is a self-propelled love song written about Johnson's wife that clings to the borrowed imagery of the place where she grew up in northern California. Then, there's the gentle and unfussy acoustic ballad "We Used to Live Here," which looks back to a time of youthful promise and cheap rent. But the wistful "It All Comes Back" is perhaps the most stunning and surprising track on the album, Johnson's production skills on full display. Built upon intricate layers of synths, keyboards, and guitars, it's a pitch-perfect blend of tone and lyricism that taps into our shared apprehensions and hopes for a post-pandemic life. "We lost some time / But we can make it back / Let's take it easy on ourselves, okay?" sings a world-weary but ultimately reassuring Johnson in the song's opening lines. It's the kind of performance that makes you hope Fruit Bats stays in this one place, at least for a little while longer.

Sweet Running Water / The Drunk Suite

A first time release for 2 untitled demos from Spectrum’s 1992 classic “Soul Kiss (Glide Divine)” LP.

Listed here as “untitled”, the pair of tunes here were penned by Richard Formby initially and were developed into the classics “Sweet Running Water” and “The Drunk Suite” for the LP which represented Sonic Boom’s first project as a band post Spacemen 3.

Lovely stripped down minimal pieces which represent a fascinating insight into how the tracks were first laid down and presented to Sonic and Mike Stout in the band.

Definitely one for all Spacemen (and post S3 bands) afficionados and released as a one time pressing of 500 45s dressed up nice in PY’s BBC ‘70s library ‘tip of the hat’ sleeves and additional backing card.

George Riley is London music's most uncategorizable new star. With a smoky, jazz-inflected voice, she weaves her way through productions that borrow from jungle, R&B and ambient soundscapes. On “Running in Waves”, a new eight-song collaboration with producer Vegyn, she's defiantly herself, writing with searing emotional honesty about everything from relationship anxiety to fear of failure to her love for Camper shoes. Whilst paying tribute to the faithful singer-songwriter genre, Riley’s grasp of harmony, modern inflections and dynamics; combined with Vegyn’s meticulous grasp of futuristic rhythms and a glistening, sparkly production aesthetic make this very much a pop record for the right now. Equal parts anthemic, introspective and danceable – it’s a personal and intermate record that you’re likely to revisit time and time again. It seems equally suited to both solo listening and singing along with your best girl mates on the bus, at the shopping center, or excitedly getting ready for the weekend.

George has previously collaborated with ANZ, Joe Armon-Jones, Lex Amor & Olver Palfreyman.

              Acrobatic Thoughts

Paranrom returns! Since Firecracker’s "Everything Is A Door", the elusive producer's first LP; he's founded his own label Wandering Eye, produced automated piano music in Los Angeles (Thom Yorke Sonos playlist approved), composed synth lines underwater for Amen Dunes’ “Freedom” and toured two years with the band as well being involved in their collaboration with Sleaford Mod’s “Feel Nothing” and their upcoming album on SubPop. This debut on Running Back’s Incantations series lets you experience the deep, suspended sound worlds that the producer has birthed. “Acrobatic Thoughts” is surreal, abstract, puzzling and urgent, yet filled with beautiful, slow-moving melodies and emotional passages. Eccentric humor meets serious soundscapes, hushed utterances evolve around abstract key notes, while an out-of-time and out-place atmosphere surrounds a microcosmos that seems to be otherworldly and very natural at the same time. Panoram manages to build a house that can be as much of a home for ambient record collectors as for futuristic pop fans and all the ones in-between those poles. Or to describe it one sentence while quoting two titles of this enigmatic record: Seabrains controlled by beautiful engines. Like a huge jellyfish gentle floating through deep subaquatic abysses. It’s an epic adventure only accentuated by the producer’s refusal to keep to one theme or mood for any serious length of time; keeping the listener tentatively hooked from beginning to end. Most recommended.

Max Graef's oddball eccentricity continues to yield stranger and quirkier offerings as Tax Free sign up the indecipherable, post-minimal-wave brilliance / madness of Running Out Of Time.

A mix of Detlef Weinrich & Madteo modern new wave EBM, Total Stasis' opiated haze and Tax Free's own recklessly playful experimentalism. It'll appeal to lovers of minimal wave and DIY electronics - Throbbing Gristle, Suzanne Ciani, Delia Derbyshire, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith etc. - but also modernist labels like Youth and Beat Bude.

Sequenced and arranged to be left in the shadows, the space and the silence resonate almost as much as the music itself. It's like you're lost in the vast catacombs of the BBC Radiophonic Sound Labs..... or perhaps stuck in Vendel's studio under Oklahoma circa 2006... Freakish, circuit bent found sounds rub up against playful mechanized rhythms and a tense, cinematic quality. It's bloody brilliant!

Good things come to those who wait! A commonplace saying that is also true in the case of Perel’s Running Back debut. Ever since "Die Dimensionen“ appeared on DFA, their CEO couldn’t wait for a call from the lady herself. Star is the consequence of said call and not only that. The very first 7“ on Running Back features Perel’s vocal talents in her native tongue. "Star (German Version)" is mesmerizing and charming, dead on target and unforgettable. In her hometown, they call this an Ohrwurm. Collectors and completist will be delighted to hear that the flip side contains two more track exercises: Eis am Stil and In The Box. A magnificent 7.

Most music does not come out of nowhere. Arising and appearing in a pre-existing system of influences, cross-references, roots, memories and desires, it either directly points towards a heritage or into the future. Mark Barrott’s "Nature Sounds of the Balearics" is a bit of both. The mastermind behind the International Feel label and the Sketches from an Island series presents an intermediary.

Technically, it’s his departure from a software based workflow and onto (or back to) a hardware driven creative point of view. Philosophically, it deals with the schizophrenia of our times: the late Paul Virgilio’s dromology and logistics of perception versus a decelerated life outside of cities, internet algorhythmics (sic!) versus meditation, the excessive stock market (all track titles are derivates of that world) against a tactile way of living.
Musically, it is the outcome of what Barrott himself described as his "techno album". For people whose definition of techno has to do with speed (again) and kick drums that might seem like a misinterpretation. Listeners who remember the Artificial Intelligence and Freezone compilations, various chill out channels or Detroit’s mellow moments, will tend to agree. "Nature Sounds of the Balearics" miraculously evokes those days and times, without breaking his neck. It is as much at home in a Caribbean water utopia between dolphins and old fishing boats as it feels current and applicable in a Ridley Scott dystopia. And if meta levels aren't your thing: it’s just a beautiful album.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Moving away slightly from the beach-bound cocktail-fuelled halcyon lysergia of the previous outings, Barrott opts for off-kilter melodies and hardware-based sequencing to create a more rhythmically diverse offering, as fascinating as it is engrossing. Lovely stuff.

History revealing compilation project centering around the legendary Front Club in Hamburg Germany that existed from the 80´s - late 90´s - a leading club in terms of music selection, mixing technique, rave culture - in a very important period of time.

Eponymous resident DJ´s Klaus Stockhausen and Boris Dlugosch take a close look back at that time, guide you through the history, the early beginnings and absolute key moments of house music club culture in Germany.

37 legendary tracks make up the CD release - many of which have not been on sale forever and a day while the vinyl, set across two volumes, selected 16 of the hardest hitting numbers for an unmixed selection for the DJs and collectors alike.

Hamburg’s Front club was already the stuff of legend, and the story is important now, 21 years later as not many peoiple know how house music infiltrated Germany to give techno some competition on the dancefloor. With Front you wouldn't have Robert Johnson or, to some extent, Parorama - house and disco simply were not celebrated in large numbers until Front, Stockhausen and Dlugosch opens minds and record boxes to the soulful sound.

                Andreas Grosser

                Venite Visum

Probably best-known for his 1987 collaboration “Babel” with Klaus Schulze, Grosser is a bit of a dark horse in the universe whose big bang was krautrock and that went on to be called cosmic, space music or simply new age.

“Venite Visum” is an anthology of recordings made between 1976 and1980. Released in 1981 on UK's York House Recordings as a cassette tape only, it features some of the most out there, hypnotic and still state-of-the art space music ever to be known to man. Gatefold 2LP.

For the first time transferred onto vinyl, compact disc and available as a digital download, it was perhaps best described by one reviewer at the time as; "powerfully relentless, repetitive themes which are constantly embellished and subjected to variations in tone colour and instrumentations. The music surges, coming in waves that approach and recede, but with each surge the waves seem to be higher up the shore.”

Now carefully transferred from an archived tape, remastered and compiled on a double album for the first time, it features the previously unreleased and not less mesmerizing “The Quantum Jump”. Come and visit the hidden and almost forgotten.

Running Back welcomes Andreas Grosser for the start of it's non-dancefloor series “Running Back Incantations”. Think Tornado Wallace's “Lonely Planet” or Suzanne Kraft's “Missum” who both would have been good and early contenders for a series like that, and you are half way there. Andres Grosser though, was “there” and that way before.

A native East-Berliner, Grosser crossed the Wall in 1981 and next to studying piano, his day job was to advise, sell, maintain and invent electronic music instruments. Naturally, Grosser had a good connection to and support from local Berlin musicians and groups, while working at night in his own studio and in those of others. Fast forward 37 years and Andreas is now one the world's leading microphone technicians specialising in German and Austrian vintage types.

Running Back's Mastermix series is a timely reminder of what has made Running Back endure and remain at the top of many house music fans' favourite label lists for over a decade. Gerd Janson's widely adored imprint has invited one of house music's original & greatest proponents of the Mastermix, NYC's Tony Humphries, to curate and mix the CD edition of the compilation, accompanied by an unmixed double-LP which features a handful of the compilations rare & exclusive cuts. Beginning with Todd Terje's blockbuster "Ragysh" and traversing tracks from across the label's history, it includes contributions from long time label regulars alongside more recent additions and reminders of some of RB's best reissues. Label mainstays Tiger & Woods, Matthew Styles, Redshape and Leon Vynehall all appear, alongside Mr G, Paul Woolford and recent breakthrough artists Shan, Jex and Roy Camanchero. Tiger & Woods's "Don't Hesitate" appears on vinyl for the first time, while the Dixon edit of Precious System's anthem "The Voice From Planet Love" will be available on wax again after only appearing on a super limited 12" run the first time around. The choice of Tony Humphries to mix the compilation is a significant one. Having received his break in the early 80s as an understudy for the legendary Shep Pettibone's Kiss FM show, Humphries went on to become one of the defining DJs of house music's formative years with his residency at New Jersey's Club Zanzibar and London's Ministry of Sound. His previous mixes illustrate his continuing ability to bridge dance music's past & present, with prior contributions to Resident Advisor and Fabric's respective series in addition to label compilations for King Street Sounds and West End Records.

                  STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: New Jersey don, Zanzibar luminary and Kiss FM's most celebrated dance jock, Tony Humphries takes time to explore the vast Running Back catalogue and delivers a highly enjoyable master-mix that perfectly encapsulates both the impressive depth of the label alongside Tony's unique and coveted DJ style.

The eye of the storm: welcome to Tornado Wallace's debut album! How about some references? New Age sounds meet new wave melodies, Grace Jones runs into the Dire Straits at Compass Point, while a Korg Mini Pops and a Roland CR78 make amends for Sly & Robbie's absence, Michael Mann pictures Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness', Robert Rauschenberg tries his luck at naturalism and an imagined Wally Badarou echoes through all of it. The accumulation of about four years of work, with tracks written in Berlin and Melbourne, "Lonely Planet" is nothing like you may have expected from the Australian expat. Merging functionality with a musical playfulness on releases for ESP Institute, Beats in Space and Music From Memory's sister Label Second Circle, Tornado Wallace's found himself as one of the producers behind José Padilla's International Feel album. Here, he leaves the needs of the dance floor behind in order to create a magical mystery tour de trance into his and our inner jungle. Sandwiched between the title track and the yearning beauty of the album's final point "Healing Feeling", you get all of that as well as collaborations with and contributions of NO ZU, David Hischfelder and the voice of Sui Zhen on "Today", who would easily make Anna Domino take her proverbial hat off.
Tornado Wallace created an album that supersedes the requirements and expectations of a debut. Like a lost Island Records or a never released Made to Measure album, "Lonely Planet" soundtracks notions and ideas that recall the nostalgic future in the past as much as it looks ahead.

Patrick says: Comprising of seven expansive compositions, ‘Lonely Planet’ transports the listener to a dreamlike landscape alive with excellent birds, dense foliage and breathtaking vistas. As he glides effortlessly between future primitive visions and otherworldly ambient suites, Wallace marries lush FM synthesis with Knopfleric guitar and organic percussion, grounding us in reality while our eyes dart over the intangible. And there, nestled in the midst of all this utopian beauty is ‘Today’, the greatest 80s pop record that never was. Boasting a blithely shrugged vocal from No Zu’s Sui Zhen, the track sounds like a springtime meeting between Talk Talk and Gina X at a far flung resort. Yet despite its abundance of detached cool, this cinematic gem lends the LP a human touch, allowing the listener to find their place in the natural rhapsody. Clear your schedule, close your eyes and take the trip of a lifetime.

"We have just finished our 4th full-length album, 'Running Out Of Love'. An album about life in Sweden in 2016 and how our society seems to be in regression on so many levels. Politically, intellectually, morally...It's an album about all the things that are moving in the wrong direction. It's about the impatience that turns into anger, hate and ultimately withdrawal and apathy when love for the world and our existence begins to falter." - The Radio Dept.

The band was formed in the early 2000's and released their debut 'Lesser Matters' on Labrador in 2003, later re-issued on XL in 2004. The album is considered a Swedish classic and appeared on the NME "Albums of the decade" list in 2009.

In 2006 Sophia Coppola chose to feature three of their songs in the film ‘Marie Antoinette’ which further helped them to achieve worldwide recognition and the same year the critically acclaimed album 'Pet Grief' was released and they topped the charts and received the 'best new music' accolade on Pitchfork.

Barry says: 'They're using a lot of minor keys here, it seems quite sad' might say someone who isn't getting paid to write something more profound than that, but they'd be right! It is not a self-indulgently gloomy take on things, but more of a resigned apathy towards the state of the world today. Equally adept at pulsing synthetic new-wave electronic pieces as they are at melodic pop songs , this is a seamless and confident combination of the two, And a brilliant collection of emotive gems.

                  Zig Zags

                  Running Out Of Red

Los Angeles-based bonehead savants Zig Zags are no-nonsense ’80s style thrash with a magpie eye for deepfried pop culture detritus. These guys give so few fucks while they are out ripping faces that it’s tough to say much about them that hasn’t been said before—they shred so that we may raise beers in non-ironic salute to their Voivod worship, to a world in which young heshers subscribe to New Wave of British Heavy Metal and practice early Slayer solos while watching daytime TV, to waking and baking as you watch the world burn. Running Out of Red is the soundtrack to getting high and driving around in your shitty car in your small town, occasionally getting laid…occasionally getting laid out at the local liquor store by an older dude. Gang vocals: check. 1-2 pit beat: on lock. Shredder solid state guitar heroics: ripping, and so should you, the bong is packed and I think there’s still pizza in the fridge. I can smell your pants from here, dude.

                    Lace Curtain

                    Falling / Running

Limited Edtion: screen printed single sleeve jacket.

Lace Curtain is a new project from Australian wizards Mikey Young, Dave West and James Vinciguerra. The trio, who are involved in a myriad of punk and garage bands including Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Total Control and Rat Columns, veer in an entirely new direction on this 12" for Mexican Summer. Each side shows the band approaching electronic music with a diverse interpretation that encompasses elements of disco, krautrock and synth pop.

From the outset those drum machine patterns are locked in tight, boosted by deep, pummelling synths and basslines that could seemingly play out for eternity. Young's vocals drift in and out of each track, cloaked in a foggy club ambience that only further enhances this release's air of nonchalant cool.

                      The Victoria Lucas

                      Hit The Ground Running Fast

Brought into the shop by the band themselves, this album could well see this Brooklyn band being chased by many a clued up UK record label. The Victoria Lucas are a rock band consisting of bass, two guitars, drums, trombone, theremin, vocals, and occasionally augmented by a rotating cast of other assorted noisemakers. Best described, succinctly enough, as a rock band, the VL's sound runs a long and proud gamut. From standard-bearers like The Velvet Underground and New Order, to tear-in-your-beer country, classic rock, ala The Band and The Faces, Kraut rock, and free jazz, the Brooklyn combo embrace a wide variety of sounds combining them all seamlessly. Highly recommended!!!
