Viva Last Blues

For a limited period both formats come with a free 5 postcard set in a printed wallet. Each postcard featuring the artwork of the release.

On 'Viva Last Blues', Oldham ‘went electric’. Recorded by Steve Albini and including Plush’s Liam Hayes and Sebadoh’s Jason Lowenstein in the cast of accompanying players, the album is as dramatic and accessible as any Oldham has released.

During the accompanying tour and in press shots for ‘Viva’ Oldham often wore a cowboy hat. The record has a distinct Western, frontier-town feel, on ‘Work Hard / Play Hard’ Oldham and band rock-out in suitably blue-collar fashion. The lyrics to ‘The Mountain Low’: ‘If I could fuck a mountain, oh lord I would fuck a mountain’ (Oldham insisted the song was released as a single) were the first to feature the denuded eroticism that would be a hallmark of Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s song writing.

On ‘New Partner’, one of the album’s most celebrated tracks, Oldham sounds both warm-hearted and unsentimental – an emotional position that colours many of his lyrics. ‘Viva’ was the first time Oldham had been heard in such clarity and the interplay between the band and his voice produces some startling vocal performances.

Oldham also sounds at his most relaxed and loose on many of the songs, hitting the high notes with abandon as the music ebbs and flows around him, or, as he sings in ‘Viva Ultra’ ‘Are you jealous of the show we put on?’

'The Last Donkey Show' is the latest album from everyone's favorite freaky Texas troubadour John Wesley Coleman. While Coleman's particular madman swerve still recalls Doug Sahm and Roky Erickson, this collection covers more territory than his earlier work. Does this mean the half-mad misfit has grown up? Not quite-but the songwriting chops are all there, from carney kookiness to fuzz rockers to barstool tearjerkers to dustbowl pop.

In his own words: "That's right. My new album is called The Last Donkey Show. It is a fucking roller-coaster recorded in Oakland, California, at Greg Ashley's studio The Creamery and also in the country near Lockhardt, Texas, at my good buddy's childhood home. Aaron Blount is his name. He is a bad-ass songwriter friend of mine. We ate BBQ all day and shot BB guns and had a bonfire. There is a cast of characters on this record... It's a floodgate of memories. Every song has a crazy story. I will tell them to you some time. The donkey is a symbol of hard work, humor and death. I love it! See you at town near you. Eat Gus's Fried Chicken!"

    Stick Mcghee

Drank Up All The Wine Last Night / Venus Blues

Two of the finest examples of belting barrelhouse jumpin’ blues at their very best and finally available on a 45 format. "Drank Up All The Wine Last Night" is another classic to add to the 'drunk R&B' sub-section.

    The Last Hurrah!!

    Spiritual Non-Believers

This is the new project from HP Gundersen; well known producer, artist, musical partner, creative force, teacher, mentor and music enthusiast from Bergen, Norway. He has produced some 50 albums, probably best known for Sondre Lerche´s debut album ”Faces Down”. After stumbling over Stephen Stills´ ”secret tuning” as used on ”Suite: Judy Blue Eyes”, HP has dedicated the last couple of years to explore what he calls drone guitar, music based on open, in this case modal, guitar tunings offering a fuller sound world and polyrhythmic possibilities not achieved with standard tunings. It soon became an obsession and he would sit at home for hours and days just playing as a means of meditation and for his own mental health. Friend and singer Heidi Goodbye would come to visit and ended up becoming so hypnotized by his playing that she just had to become involved. Heidi, also from Bergen, travelled to Denmark at the age of seventeen to study jazz vocal for two years. On returning home she was considered something of a sensation, but couldn´t identify with a role in the jazz world and became more interested in American roots music, old country music and blues.

Others who have been intrigued include Jon Irabagon, dubbed the greatest saxophone talent in the US since John Coltrane, and Michael Powers, the blues guitarist, both having played with HP in the recent months. ”Spiritual Non-believers” is a lovely mix of acoustic drone guitar, cosmic raga, pure pop and the very local take on country music so special for the west coast of Norway.

The half hour centrepiece of the album is based on a dark, sordid and bizarre story, in stark contrast to the almost high spirited feelgood atmosphere of most of the music. ”The Ballad Of Billy And Lilly” is bookended by ”Mother Nature”, a cover from the 1970 album by Norwegian cult band Oriental Sunshine and ”Melodi Grand Prix 73”, an unlikely but sweet mix of Bossa Nova, surf music and Steve Reich.

    Cats For Peru

We Had This Problem Last Winter

Cats For Peru's latest EP "We Had This Problem Last Winter" follows on from their debut album "Attack of the Pitching Machine" released at the end of 2009. The EP feature 4 news songs full of texture and emotion.

Speaking about the new EP, Ad from the band said: "Since the album, guitars have given me terrible nightmares; so I bought a synth and played that instead. This meant we had even more scope to, not to change direction as such, but to spout off like a musical tree."

      RM Hubbert

      First & Last

"First & Last" brings Glasgow music scene mainstay and longtime friend of the label RM Hubbert onto Chemikal Underground for the first time.

Following several years in Glasgow outfit El Hombre Trajeado, Hubbert took a few years off to study guitar before self releasing "First & Last", his debut solo album.

Chemikal Underground have come on board to provide their support, coinciding with Hubbert’s upcoming support slot on Mogwai’s mammoth European tour.

The album also receives its virgin pressing on deluxe vinyl.

RM Hubbert’s debut is a collection of beautifully contemplative instrumentals which highlights his undeniable virtuosity without any hint of self-indulgence or technical bravado.

The tracks incorporate elements of folk, flamenco and samba, and were often inspired by dark events in Hubby’s past, notably the death of his parents and his diagnosis with depression.

That these traumatic events resulted in an album of such beauty is testament to Hubbert’s considered and subtle strengths as a composer.

Awkward comparisons with folk and flamenco artists can give the wrong impression – best to note that RM Hubbert has been asked to support Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra Band, Alasdair Roberts and King Creosote, and is about to embark on a five week European tour with Mogwai.

Trash Aesthetics has previously released music by Bloc Party, The Rakes, Tilly & The Wall and now are set to release the debut single from solo artist Mi Mye with his revolving cast of musicians. This 7" is close to the euphoric sound of Mi Mye's live shows that have earned him his following, whilst sticking to the wry, self deprecating lyrical themes of unrequited love and confidence crisis that vocally would appeal to fans of Bright Eyes.

        Future Of The Left

Last Night I Saved Her From Vampires

This 19 track live CD is available in independent stores only and features four brand new, unreleased tracks - "Drink Nike", "Distant Jabs At A Soul", "V.D.F.A." and "Cloak The Dagger", the latter two songs having been a regular fixture of the band's live set throughout the summer.

          Tenebrous Liar

          Tenebrous Liar's Last Stand

Tenebrous Liar feature legendary rock photographer Steve Gullick, also founder of magazines Careless Talk Costs Lives & recently voted 8th coolest person in Britain in The Observer. What the press have said: 'Tenebrous Liar purvey a dark, doomed and deliciously damaged style of cosmic/ambient rock melancholy, which is nevertheless hugely uplifting' - Time Out. 'It's not pretty, it's largely devoid of hope and direction, yet crucially - it still has the power to uplift. It's really good.' - Mojo

          Lapels

Painted Skeletons / Last Great Civilisation

This is the debut release from Wakefield based label Philophobia Music. It's also the second release from Lapels. "Painted Skeletons" finds Lapels sounding more epic than previously, whilst the double A-Side track, "Last Great Civilisation" is a harder proposition, being the bands most direct recording to date. If you're looking for a comparison then a scuzzy Pavement might fit the bill. Good stuff!!

            The Turner

            Hope Dies Last

The Turner is a local singer / songwriter called Gary Tomkinson from Levenshulme, Manchester. The album "Hope Dies Last" features contributions from Sian Webley and James Youngjohns from Anna Kashfi and also from Mike Harries from Quiet Loner. It also features a string quartet on three tracks. He has frequently been compared to Roddy Frame and Tim Hardin.

              The Last Shadow Puppets

              The Age Of The Understatement

The debut album from The Last Shadow Puppets who are Alex Turner (from Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (from The Rascals) who've been firm friends ever since Arctic Monkeys toured with Kane's previous group, The Little Flames. The pair were so inspired by listening to the likes of Scott Walker, early Bowie and David Axelrod, that they hatched a plan: They recorded the songs at Black Box studios near Nantes, France in two weeks during the summer of 2007, with producer and drummer James Ford (Simian Mobile Disco). The band then approached Owen Pallett (Final Fantasy) to arrange and conduct the orchestration of the tracks, which were recorded by the 22 piece London Metropolitan Orchestra at British Grove studios in London over Christmas. "The Age Of The Understatement", is an album of 12 full-blooded songs, bold and brassy, full of drama, wit and melody, that source the past but avoid falling into pastiche. Both Miles and Alex are 22, and this is a youthful record, full of life and the sheer pleasure of music making.

                Janko Nilovic

                Last Impressions - Originals

When the majority of radio and TV stations and audiovisual departments busied themselves getting rid of their obsolete and bulky stocks of vinyl in the mid 90s, the door was opened to discovering the sheer variety and richness of library music produced in the 60s and 70s. DJs, producers and the more adventurous of music fans quickly identified the hot spots in this vast territory, and lists of 'most wanted' records began to circulate with the names of the composers to look out for being repeated over and over. Janko Nilovic was one such name, quickly becoming synonymous with quality and originality on the scene. With over 30 albums under his belt, on the most prestigious labels of the era (Montparnasse 2000, Neuilly, Telemusic etc), Nilovic quikly affirmed himself as one of the most creative composers of this magical era. This 23 track collections brings together pop, psyche, African, soul stompers and swinging 60s groovers, all backed with proper bands or full orchestras.

                  Area C

                  Haunt

"Haunt" is a swirl of farfisa organs, loops, stretched out guitar and the fragmented, fractured beats of an analog drum machine and tube amplifier static. Recorded by Eric Carlson and Jeff Knoch (Eyes Like Saucers) in late 2005. Area C was started by Eric Carlson in 2003, his compositions examine the texture and tonal characteristics of sound, working with live loops, their cyclical relationships, and the details of their decay over time, Jeff Knoch has appeared live with Area C, but this is his first recorded work with Eric.

                    Up Two Sticks Road

Driven by two drummers, the Idle Suite's music is open ended improv rock.

                      Transitional Phase

                        Fields

                        Everything Last Winter

"Everything Last Winter" is the debut album from Fields, and it features re-recorded versions of their singles "If You Fail We All Fail" and "Song For The Fields". It also contains some of the most visually arresting artwork to grace a musical release in recent times. In keeping with the tone of the rest of their work the band have eschewed hiding behind computer trickery and all other mod cons and chosen to work with a real human being, a pen and a pad of paper.

                          Low Frequency In Stereo

                          The Last Temptation Of....

The Low Frequency In Stereo release their third album "The Last Temptation Of...", making music that sounds fresh, inspired and focused. Recorded on analogue equipment to get the classic room sound and mixed down on digital to keep the natural sounds on the mood and instruments. Some call it lo-fi post-rock, some call it The Low Frequency In Stereo sound. Some other critics mention bands like Can, Neu and Jesus and the Mary Chain when listening to the bands music.

                            Mu

                            The Last Album

Merrell Fankhauser achieved early success as composer of the surf instrumental "Wipe Out", a huge international hit for the Surfaris. His own recordings didn't fare so well until 1968's "HMS Bounty" became something of a cult hit. Mu featured Fankhauser and Jeff Cotton, previously slide guitarist with Captain Beefheart. After an eponymous debut the band moved to Hawaii and lived the hippie dream recording spasmodically between 1973-1974 until Cotton split to become a priest back in L.A. The tracks that make up "The Last Album" are from this period, the material is more exotic, laid-back, spiritual and full of a stoned lyricism that clearly reflects the influence of all that Maui sun and surf.

                              Freya

                              As The Last Light Drains

A totally aggressive blast that hits you like a coiled spring as Karl, Erick and Bulldog, formerly of Earth Crisis bring you "As The Last Light Drains" in their new incarnation as Freya. This is pulverizing heavy hardcore that mixes brutal guitar lines with vicious but accessible vocals.

                                The Hurt Process

                                The Last Goodbye

This is the sensational second release from one of Britain's best emocore bands. Think Thursday, Hey Mercedes, Waterdown and Thursday. Lots of touring has made them sharp as a tack and these four tracks are a real appetiser for the album due later this year.

                                  Last Year

                                  Pictures, Letters & Memories

Last Year are a new emo band with a few rough hardcore edges. This CD used to be their demo but the quality of recording really blows away a lot of other bands releases. Five great songs that will surely please everybody that has an ear for decent tunes!

                                    Loudon Wainwright III

                                    Last Man On Earth

If one artist has maintained a rich quality and autobiographical commitment in his songwriting throughout his career then it has to be Loudon Wainwright. As angst ridden and relevant as ever he sings of despair, loss and depression but with a wit and humanity that has never paled over the years. While some singer songwriters have lost their eloquence or ability to touch their listeners on a personal level, Loudon Wainwright merely adds more broken relationships, more personal losses (his Mum died recently which naturally sent him into a tailspin) into his lyrical brew. "Last Man On Earth" stands as one of the finest works from this brilliant songwriter.
