      Heartless Fools

Heartless Fools is a collection of works exploring multiplicity and often contradictory ideas. Supported by a Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, many of the works were realized and recorded in January 2018 at Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavík, Iceland. Since these initial recordings, the music has grown through far-reaching collaborations with musicians in the worlds of jazz, classical, and pop. Album credits include experimental pop trio Square Peg Round Hole, vocalists Isaiah Robinson and Hanna Benn, and Icelandic cellist Þórdís Gerður Jóns-dóttir.

While the music itself is not intended to be political, the title Heartless Fools refers to the response of two characters to the current political landscape. The first is working through shock and grief as they awake to the realities of this world, and is trying to make sense of it all. The other, fueled by an imagined loss of cultural identity, is full of a rage that causes them to do inhumane things. This shows up in the music as a struggle between order and chaos, contemplation and impatience. The works constantly push in pull, both internally and with one another.

          Johnny Moped Feat. Captain Sensible

          Tribute To Jordan Mooney

The 3rd of April 2022 was a very sad day in the world of punk, fashion and beyond. An icon had departed far too soon, but she will never be forgotten due to her legacy. The name ‘Jordan Mooney’ was the stuff of legend! She’d “been there, seen it, done it”, in a whole host of differing fields, from ballet dancing; to seeing Ziggy performing live and meeting the great man; from being and looking punk before it ever existed; from witnessing the formation of the Sex Pistols right before her eyes along with Malcolm and Vivienne; from acting in forward-thinking films; from sharing banter with Andy Warhol; to managing Adam & The Ants and briefly marrying one of them; and from the later career veterinary nursing. Jordan achieved many things in her meagre 66 years, but whatever she put her hand to, she did it to her very best ability. Jordan was true to herself as well as others and was totally trusted by those that had the pleasure of knowing and meeting her. On Sunday 29th May 2022, hundreds of souls gathered in Brighton at ‘The Official Jordan Mooney Charity Memorial Concert’ to celebrate the life of this truly remarkable woman. Some had travelled across the planet from Japan, Germany and elsewhere, solely to attend the special day of celebration. On that day, old friends and new friends were gathered under the one roof as the perfect send-off. Jordan had known Captain “cheers me dears!” Sensible for around five decades and during the last few sacred months of her life, she had a Johnny Moped song as an earworm in her head that she and I would joyfully sing to each other: “Darling, let's have another baby; Let's make one soon on our second honeymoon…”.It made perfect sense that Captain Sensible would once again ride again with his old mates, Johnny Moped, in memory of Jordan. Some of the event was recorded and so ladies and gentlemen we proudly bring you this charity record release! Enjoy x (Jordan’s partner - Nick Linazasoro).

Jordan Fields ropes in some help from his close-knit Chicagoan community for a thoroughly delightful excursion into pure house music for the lastest release on long standing imprint, Yore.

SIX tracks (count 'em!) meaning there's plenty wriggle for your wonga on this 12"! All of it leaning on the deep, tribal and slightly jazzy - it's wraught with the spirit of house music through and through with dreamy organ licks, frenetic percussion, warm bass and insurmountable energy.

Pressed nice and crisp and loud as per the Yore standard, six fresh joints to rock out in the club or the house party.

            M1, M3 / GETOUTOFMYMIND

Within the last couple of years, the UK has seen a paradigm shift in the electrifying sounds permeating from its clubs that have seen a ripple effect worldwide, calling to mind the revolution ignited by pioneers of the 1990s.

Adopting a no-holds barred attitude to their high octane output in their respective styles, SHERELLE and I. JORDAN have acted as two of the forebearers of the UK scene; releasing music that maximises emotion and maximises euphorian dancefloors globally.

Now the duo come together to announce their first collaborative release, ‘M1, M3’ /‘GETOUTOFMYMIND’, on fabric Originals, the flagship label from world-renowned club entity fabric.

Accompanying the cassette album of Lerosa’s fourth full-length, "Catena", this heavyweight 12” features two originals from the album and two remixes from familiar faces childhood friend Donato Dozzy and long-time fellow traveler Jordan GCZ (of Juju & Jordash). Album closer “Suite De Paris” places pitch-bent liquid acid over a huge skanking bassline, the perfect material for Dozzy to make hay with his simmering techno take. Meanwhile, album opener “Apollo” churns with industrial fervor, before Jordan GCZ reduces it down to its acid techno essence, leaving little space for us to catch our breath.

Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, producer, and songwriter Jordan Rakei returns with his fourth studio album, "What We Call Life’". Diving even deeper into his sound world, merging electronic with acoustic, and rugged grooves with ambient atmospheres, to create something richer, more detailed, and more textural than before. Rakei, already a practitioner of meditation and mindfulness, was curious about the potential of using therapy for further self-discovery. During the process, he began to learn more about his behaviour patterns and anxieties, and addressed his long-standing irrational phobia of birds – a fear often associated with the unpredictable and the unknown, and something explored in the album’s creative direction and visuals.

‘What We Call Life’ is Jordan Rakei’s most vulnerable and intimate album to date. Its lyrics concern the lessons that the New Zealand-born, Australia-raised, and London-based artist learned about himself during therapy, a journey that began two years ago when he started reading about the ‘positive psychology’ movement. These themes manifest on songs like lead single “Family”, which Rakei says is “the most personal” he’s ever been with his lyrics. “I wanted to hit my vulnerability barrier and be really honest. It’s about my parents’ divorce in my mid-teens but still having love for them no matter what,” he explains.

Artwork was created by Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based visual artist Justin Tyler Close (who has worked previously with the likes of Laura Marling), who resonated with the themes on Rakei’s album. The image was created in a remote photo shoot, with Rakei sending images over the internet that were projected onto a sheet and photographed by Close. The melancholic images reflect the title of the record, a question that Rakei would sometimes ask himself during a period of his childhood in which he suffered a great deal of anxiety: Is this what we call life? Rather than accepting defeat, the title is today a commentary on the more happy, confident, and assured person and artist that Jordan Rakei is today

              STAFF COMMENTS

Millie says: Jordan Rakei fourth album is highly anticipated here at Piccadilly, the album explores themes worn close to Rakei’s sleeve. Personal and moving, the track ‘Family’ is so beautiful and soulful.

The Lasso, Jordan Hamilton & The Saxsquatch

              Tri Magi

Jordan Hamilton, a cellist equally equipped to perform Bach, reimagine Chick Corea, or bow a Drake top line.

Jordan Hamilton is a "one of one" instrumentalist who somehow allows the cello to land in new revelatory situations regardless of the composition, genre, mood, or approach.

The Saxsquatch, a saxophonist bent on twisting his instrument into the singular voice of a beast. Saxsquatch plays with a knowledge of the history/pedigree of his instrument, jazz to rock to noise, but does so with a proprietary blend of the styles that leaves saxophone sounding new.

The Lasso, a producer who has pulled in everything while refusing genre across his run of LPs on Mello Music Group. The Lasso continues his role as providing diverse and creative landscapes that allow the lead voices of his compositions to become players in their own sonic fate.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Massive new direction for the monumental Mello Music Group as they explore future-jazz and blunted beats via multi-instrumentalist & modern Arthur Russell reincarnation The Lasso. Joined by Jordan Hamilton & The Saxsquatch and lying somewhere between FlyLo, J Dilla & the new sound of London jazz - this is incredible!

                I JORDAN

                Watch Out!

London based DJ and producer I JORDAN releases their new EP ‘Watch Out!’ on Ninja Tune.

India is tipped as one of the world’s most exciting artists, producers and DJs of the moment following last year's’ hugely successful ‘For You’ EP. They have captured the attention of the scene’s top tastemakers and have received impressive support, with stellar reviews from Pitchfork (8.0), NME (5/5), Clash (8/10) and the EP’s title track ‘For You’ voted as Resident Advisor’s #1 Best Track Of 2020, Crack Magazine’s #2 and Pitchfork’s #21.

I JORDAN had quite the year despite most shows being cancelled in 2020 and was named as Pete Tong’s Breakout Star Of 2020 on BBC Radio 1, listed as one of The Guardian’s 50 Amazing Musicians To Watch in 2021 and won Best Breakthrough Producer at the annual DJ Mag Best Of British Awards.

‘Watch Out!’ sees I JORDAN reflect on how movement has tied into their life over the years. India describes the record as “a homage to both physical and conceptual movement” and comes as a result of their own pattern of movement being forcibly changed by lockdown.

                  Late Night Tales: Jordan Rakei

“I wanted to try and showcase as many people as I knew on this mix. My idea of Late Night Tales was to distil a series of relaxing moments; the whole conceptual sonic of relaxation. So, I was trying to think of all the collaborators and friends that I knew, who’d recorded stuff with this horizontal vibe. Plus, I was also trying to help my friends' stuff get into the world. I know the story of Khruangbin blowing up after appearing on the series (in fact, I think that's how I discovered them). So, the main idea was to create a certain atmosphere, but also to help some of my favourite collaborators and bud- dies to give their songs a little push out into the world. Hope you like it” Jordan Rakei.

Late Night Tales celebrate their 20th anniversary with the release of multi-instru- mentalist, vocalist and producer Jordan Rakei’s majestic compilation. The 28-year-old modern soul icon effortlessly stamps his own jazz and hip-hop driven sound all over this gorgeous array of handpicked tracks. A beautifully layered blend that is mirrored in the music he’s made, it comes as no surprise that such a supremely gifted songwriter should deliver a mix that is all about the song.

Rakei, born in New Zealand, but raised in Australia, moved to the UK in 2015; he released his debut album, Cloak, with Oz label Soul Has No Tempo, but his two subsequent LPs, Wallflower and Origin, came out on Ninja Tune, the former #2 in Album Of The Year for Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide poll, while Origin was nominated for Best Album at the AIM Awards. Jordan had this to say on his upcoming mix:

As Jordan says, there’s so much more to the song selection on Late Night Tales’ latest outing than a random collection of artists. Many have some sort of personal connection, so just as Bonobo provided a platform for the breakout of Khruangbin on a previous LNT, this may have the same effect for Rakei’s friends. After a soothing opener from Fink, good friend and big influence Alfa Mist (part of the Are We Live collective) delivers ‘Mulago.’ “I want to champion their sound and show the world how good he is, and I thought it’d be fitting to start the mix with family,” says Jordan.

Next up is Charlotte Day Wilson with ‘Mountains,’ followed by ‘Count A Heart’ from Moreton, an exclusive collaboration with Jordan, who grew up on the same street in Brisbane, Australia. “She was the first artist I ever collaborated with, and one of the first artists to be involved in my career,” he explains. Elsewhere we hear Scottish producer and multi-instrumentalist C Duncan’s haunting ‘He Came from the Sun,’ Barcelona collective Oso Leone deliver a dreamy ‘Virtual U’ and Bill Lauren’s ‘Singularity,’ which evokes a striking sense of time and place.

Snowpoet’s ethereal ‘Evitenity’ is a “long mediative narrative over a beautiful soundscape,” which at times seems chaotic, nicely juxtaposed with undeniable beauty, and Maro’s kooky songwriting shines on ‘Always And Forever.’ Long-time buddy Armon-Jones contributes ‘Idiom,’ and Jordan’s exclusive cover version is a two-for-one, Radiohead’s ‘Codex’ merging with ‘Lover, You Should’ve Come Home’ by Jeff Buckley and another exclusive, original com- position by Jordan, ‘Imagination.’ The latter works as a piece with the spoken (Spanish) word voiced by movie director Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel, Birdman, and The Reve- nant,) who is a big fan of Jordan’s. “He messaged me when I went to L.A and asked to come to my show. I was in such shock and we hung out after. I thought it would be nice to get him to do this in his native tongue, because I don’t think that’s been done yet on the series.” It certainly is a family affair. Not the blood is thicker than water kind, but certainly musical kindred spirits.

                    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: There are very few labels as influential in the compilation game as Late Night Tales, and this newest outing from Jordan Rakei is one of the best yet. Flitting between downbeat jazz business and more ambient pieces, this collection is perfect for popping on and zoning out to. Brilliantly paced and superbly selected, this is a fascinating insight into Rakei's influences, and most of all, a great listen.

Soulful, intimate and expansive all at once, Jordan Rakei’s third album, "Origin", cuts straight to the point. The melodies are brighter, the sound is bigger and the vision behind it more finely-tuned. Switching up from the highly personal and intimate portrait he painted with 2017’s "Wallflower", which was a way of grappling with his experience of anxiety and introversion, "Origin" is overtly inspired by dystopian visions of our future - notably Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. 'I’m worried that we’re losing a sense of connection,' explains Jordan, with many of the album lyrics exploring technological growth, and how it affects our sense of humanity. For example, new single "Say Something" is 'about speaking up for what you believe in; a call to arms for future humans to stand up against the AI systems which govern a now-dystopian world. It follows recent single "Mind’s Eye", which envisions a future world where malfunctioning tech implanted in the human body has flooded the users mind with projections of chaos. He meditates daily, something he adopted partly in response to his issues with anxiety, and something which has shaped his worldview and informed his writing and production process.

On "Origin", Rakei has scaled up his ambitions, and is more confident in the way he goes about achieving them. Making tracks that speak more confidently, in brighter colours, and which deal with something bigger than himself. He channeled the classic songwriting and musicality of his heroes Stevie Wonder and Steely Dan, striving to surprise and delight with the form of his work, and always infusing it with the same effortless swing and human feel that he fell in love with listening to A Tribe Called Quest, Pete Rock and 9th Wonder.

Last time we caught up with the GCZ he was strung out in heaven, aligning chakras and hitting the bong with two volumes of "Lushlyfe" for Rush Hour. Now Jordan's back on his own Off Minor imprint, bringing the noise with three versions of "Fission Transmission" for all the freakz in the club. Rattling away along the A-side, the 'Main Mix' lays waste to the competition with wild Italo-disco arpeggiators, swelling, adrenal synthlines and squeeling gremlins trapped deep in the inner workings of the drum box. The "Drum Mix" kicks things on a touch, incorporating a schlamming 4/4 beat and plenty of EBM energy to level any rave bunker you find yourself lost in. Finally, "Suspicion Transmission (No Drum Mix)" bathes us in the brilliance of Czamanski's vintage hardware, bubbling electronics and charming weirdness.
