Annie Clark made her recorded debut as St. Vincent in 2007 with Marry Me, quickly becoming regarded as one of the most innovative and fascinating presences in modern music. Her subsequent albums would include Actor (2009), Strange Mercy (2011), her self-titled fourth album and winner of the 2014 GRAMMY for Best Alternative Album. In 2017, her fifth album MASSEDUCTION would break St. Vincent into the U.S. and UK top 10s and win two more GRAMMYs (Best Rock Song for its title track, and Best Recording Package). 2021’s Daddy’s Home found St. Vincent channeling the hungover glamor and gritty sepia-toned soundtrack of 1970s downtown NYC to an ecstatic reception, ultimately winning her a second Best Alternative Album GRAMMY.

Following a 2021-2022 global tour that reaffirmed St. Vincent’s status as one of live music's preeminent forces with headline appearances at the likes of the Hollywood Bowl and Radio City Music Hall, Clark would begin work on album number seven: Her first fully self-produced album (having co-produced every one of her previous efforts), All Born Screaming is St. Vincent at her most primal. Featuring Clark leading “a curated group of rippers” through the brawny “Broken Man,” the mordant catwalk sashay through the deafening assault of self-loathing that is “Big Time Nothing,” the sublime, elegiac earworm “Sweetest Fruit," All Born Screaming is equal parts spiritual desolation and rapturous acceptance. “If you’re born screaming, that’s a great sign,” says Clark, “because it means you’re breathing. You’re alive. My god. It’s joyous. And then it’s also a protest. We’re all born in protest in a certain way. It’s terrifying to be alive, it’s ecstatic to be alive. It’s everything.”

The Outer Edge returns with one of the rarest and simultaneously best recorded independently released German new wave singles in history: "Jede Nacht derselbe Traum" ("The Same Dream Every Night") by Total.

Back in late 1983, Total found themselves in a pivotal rendezvous with CBS Records in a Frankfurt hotel lobby. The entire band was present, along with the esteemed NDW manager Jim Rakete, who had played a role in launching Nena to national and international stardom. Also in attendance were the A&R representatives from CBS. It was on this day that Total was presented with the opportunity to ink an album deal with CBS. However, since they had only recorded the titular song thus far, negotiations hit a snag. CBS insisted on a full album rather than a standalone single.

Ultimately, the band decided to independently issue a limited 7" run of "Jede Nacht derselbe Traum" under Günther Mannschreck's Schreckschuss label in January 1984. These vinyl copies became the band's currency for pursuing record deals and promotional prospects. However, despite the potential to achieve commercial success and garner radio airplay, the song and the "Total" project gradually waned from the music landscape. Regrettably, only a few vinyl copies have managed to endure over time. This NDW "holy grail" may have prompted a fair share of dreams for serious vinyl collectors, as to this day, not a single physical copy has been put up for sale on platforms like eBay or Discogs. Interestingly, Maisenbacher has even fielded an offer of over 400 Euros for an original copy, although he regretfully couldn't fulfill the request due to possessing just a single copy himself.

The song itself is a fusion of diverse musical styles. Crafted using the Oberheim OB8 system, complete with the DMX drum machine and a bassline woven from a Jupiter 8 keyboard, it carried a groove reminiscent of New York's electro hip-hop sound in "The Message," setting it apart from typical German new wave productions. Additionally, a Korg Polysix was integrated, and guitar effects were layered to finalize the infectious synth-pop instrumental. Newcomer to the band, Andrea Ströbel, laid down a flawless vocal layer that steered the song towards a straightforward NDW direction, giving it a resonance that surely resonated with mainstream and radio audiences. To complete a B-side for the original vinyl single, the legendary state-of-the-art L480 Lexicon reverb was used. In the more experimental "Maxi Mix," now known as the "Dub Mix," Mannschreck expertly manipulated the machine. The outcome stands as a historical example of incredible studio craftsmanship and the cutting-edge techniques of the 80s.

For the new 12" release, Mannschreck unearthed an alternative mix of the song on the original tapes, featuring a distinct introduction, break, and exciting edits. In addition, DJ Friction, who contributed to the transfer and mastering for the release, treated us to a superb edit that cleverly melds all versions of the song while incorporating a few extra bassline groove elements.

The captivating reissue cover spotlights vocalist Andrea Ströbel, who gazes with determination. A hand reaches out to grab her shirt, attempting to pull her down. Symbolizing the song's theme, it embodies the unsettling dream conveyed by the lyrics-yet she steadfastly resists.

In summary, we are elated to present a significant gem for vinyl enthusiasts: a splendid mid-tempo tune that dances on the boundary of synth-pop, new wave and electro. The new 12" single underwent meticulous mastering, and the outcome is nothing short of astounding, surpassing the sonic quality of the original pressing.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: True rarities come thin on the ground these days, but this one definitely qualifies. An inspired piece of mid 80s Neue Deutsche Welle that's had people pissing their pants with excitement.

South London based producer and multi-instrumentalist Neue Grafik announces his new EP 'Foulden Road Part II' from his Neue Grafik Ensemble band, released 25th March on Total Refreshment Centre. The sequel to their impressive 2019 release 'Foulden Road', Neue Grafik continues to incorporate 100% live takes with the ensemble, as well as solo productions that reflect Neue Grafik's past work with both the Rhythm Section and 22a labels.

Neue Grafik explains, "This EP is a reflection of the social context which surrounds me" – created in a year of much social isolation as well as political unrest, 'Foulden Road II' explores the complex feelings that he found himself battling. He adds "In 2019, we released 'Foulden Road Part I', which was a transitional album, exploring a new culture and navigating between two worlds: Paris and London. 'Part II' is a bit darker, closer to realness with a sprinkle of hope. I couldn't have predicted that I'd finish it encased in my flat, between four walls, in December 2020 after a year of lockdown, Brexit, George Floyd protests, and without London's brilliant culture mesmerising my mind. Everything was sad and closed. Hills were difficult to climb. But it also gave me the time to work hard and deliver this second part of Foulden Road, pushing it forward".

Combining an array of influences — from London, to Paris via New York, Nigeria and Cameroon — with well-measured confidence, ' Foulden Road II' allows you to reflect on the complexities of the last year, whilst braced with energy and hope to move forward positively. Heavy horns and hypnotic poetry form the backbone record, which will ignite any room. 'Foulden Road II' begins with the grounding poetry of MA.MOYO on 'Black Bodies'. The EP is dedicated to Adama Traoré, a black man who died in police custody in Paris. Neue Grafik explains "His name is not well known outside of France. I was shocked, devastated even, to learn that his story didn't cross the Channel". 'Queen Assa' is a heavily percussive dancefloor-hitter which honours French activist Assa Traoré, (Adama's sister) her family, and her struggle to support all families hurt by police brutality. Broken beat elements flow through the horn accompanied 'Officer, Let Me Go To School', while West London rapper Lord Apex offers an unapologetic and poignantly personal perspective on 'Step To It'.

Released on the Total Refreshment Centre label, based out of Stoke Newington's Foulden Road, the EP is a testament to his versatility as an ever-shifting figurehead. Engineered by Capitol K, recorded at Total Refreshment Centre, mixed by Marcus Linon at Greasy Records and mastered by Guy Davie at Electric Mastering – a significant pillar in Neue Grafik's musical career. Having played a DJ set there in 2017, he was convinced by TRC founder Lex Blondin to start a band after he was heard playing some compositions on the communal piano. After spending a couple of sleepless nights on the living room couch, his first gig was booked in the venue space downstairs a week later. The ensemble was established and he has remained in London ever since.

Neue Grafik Ensemble's musicians include; Matt Gedrych, Benjamin 'The Chief' Appiah, Jack Banjo Courtney, Chelsea Carmichael, Dougal Taylor, Yahael Camara-Onono, Xvngo, Rebekah Reid, Dan-Iulian Drutac, Jamie-lee Glinsman and Zara Hudson-Kozdój.

Neue Grafik hosts The Orii Jam Sessions, an energising weekly jam night at Hackney Wick's Colour Factory, which has become a pivotal weekly gathering, inspired by the likes of Unit 31 and Steam Down.

Stereo Total

Chanson Hysterique 1995-2005

The box set "Chanson Hystérique" presents the first ten years of the bands history and, due to the death of Françoise Cactus on 17th February 2021, also unfortunately represents the last Stereo Total release.

Since their first release in 1995 Stereo Total have spoiled us with their entertaining over-the-top-songs, always way beyond mass taste. The anti-diva Françoise Cactus and the multi-non-instrumentalist Brezel Göring have released a total of 16 albums - including soundtracks and theatre works.

The box set "Chanson Hystérique" presents the first ten years of the bands history and, due to the death of Françoise Cactus on 17th February 2021, also unfortunately represents the last Stereo Total release in which this extraordinary artist participated.

"Instead of buying a record, we just made one of our own …

This box set contains the recordings from the first ten years of Stereo Total - the original albums, with original covers!,as well as various rarities. There's also a book, though not about Stereo Total. Instead it is a catalogue of Françoise Cactus's art work. These sketches and paintings embody the very latest trends in art, sex, and psychological disorders - borderline kitsch at its best! Françoise wasn't actually seeking a career as a painter with these works - she just wanted to decorate the empty walls of our apartment. We had a similar impulse with our music. With Stereo Total we recorded the music we wanted to hear; fun, with no regard for mainstream taste, naïve, perverse, and always a bit off-kilter. Before concerts Françoise often warned me not to play too precisely otherwise people might think we were just playing a recording. This was not difficult for me, as I can make an expensive instrument sound like a 50 euro piece of junk, and nearly everything we play relies on screw-ups.

The box set was the final project Françoise worked on. Because of her tragic death, this release now represents the end of Stereo Total and a farewell to the amazing and unique Françoise Cactus: she is difficult to describe and absolutely impossible to explain. But listen for yourself …" Brezel Göring - Stereo Total.

    Dusted

    III

Brian Borcherdt (aka Dusted) is the founding member of Holy Fuck as well as LIDS which includes members of Metz and Constantines, and has a single due out this year on Sub Pop.

The new album is the follow up to the acclaimed 2018 release BlackOut Summer and will provide a welcome musical shot in the arm for fans who have anxiously waited three years for new music from Dusted.
‘The album's process began with Borcherdt finding a long forgotten favourite song, coming back to him in a dream. ‘’That same morning, I found a demo of it, along with countless others, on an old laptop,’’ said Borcherdt. ‘’It was a joyful moment, hearing long lost songs as if I was never part of them. I was a third-party listener thus allowing them to be innocent and unjudged. I added a handful of the favourites to a current set list, which became the inspiration to go into the studio, to lay everything down, live off the floor, simply to preserve them, to keep them from being forgotten again.'

Dusted’s 2012 album ‘’Total Dust’’ was selected for the Polaris Prize Long List in 2013. The support from filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallee earned Dusted two songs in his most recent film Demolition and a cameo role in Wild. With Holy Fuck, Borcherdt has been making music for 15 years and has released 5 albums. Holy Fuck has seen their music played on major TV shows like Breaking Bad and Mr Robot as well as ranking over 200K monthly listeners on Spotify and accumulating over 5 million career streams to date. Borcherdt has been releasing solo music since 2002. Previously to Holy Fuck, he was part of By Divine Right whose past band members count Feist and Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning.

      Stereo Total

      Ah! Quel Cinema!

Musically, this Stereo Total disc, their twelfth, cannot be readily aligned with anything at all. If earlier albums resonated with influences from chanson, trash or disco to punk, rock'n'roll and NDW (German New Wave), Stereo Total have now arrived in their very own musical universe which pays no heed to stylistic devices, A word to our younger readers: Stereo Total began making music before the internet existed, before the Euro, before Germany reunited and before there were even bands or music. They will probably still be playing when all that has been consigned to the dustbin of history.

        Joy Division / New Order

Total: From Joy Division To New Order

Despite an incredibly short recording career Joy Division remarkably have stood the test of time in terms of influential British bands. Their dark, brooding sound has inspired more artists than could be listed and their continued adoration today is testament to the forward thinking yet inward projected music and lyricism of a young band on the brink of success yet unsure of how to deal with it. With the sad passing of Ian Curtis, from the ashes rose New Order; the same core band but with a new fresh approach to their chosen career path. Loud, colourful and full of life.

‘Total’ is a chronological look at the two bands most important tracks, covering Joy Division staples such as 'Love Will Tear Us Apart', and the resonating 'Atmosphere'. New Order bring to the table 'Blue Monday', 'Bizarre Love Triangle' and 'True Faith'. Also included is a brand new never released New Order track ‘Hellbent’.

Cult label Total Stasis return with more of their odd-ball, uncategorizable sound - hynagogic reflections from the worlds of dance music and beyond. Anom Vitruv is a sufficiently illusive and mysterious producer to add to this bastion of esoteric brilliance. Four tracks that refract off the surface of a glistening icy lake, taking in tribal ritual chants, auto-tuned exotic r'n'b and wacked-out drone. As always, the record needs a second listen to understand, and a third and forth to completely enjoy. But then, aren't they the best ones? Never in danger at burning out after one or two plays, you'll re-visit this curio of musical genius time and time again. A sonic relic to love and cherish. Total Stasis have done it again. Highly recommended.

          Total Reggae: Trench Town Rock

VP dig deep into their extensive vault of Jamiacan sounds to pay tribute to the superb songwriting skills of the one and only Robert Nesta Marley with the superb "Trench Town Rock" compilation. Including massive hits from Dennis Brown, Delroy Wilson, Leroy Smart, Beenie Man and many more, this set offers a fascinating glimpse of how these internationally recognised songs were adapted back home and made hits again for a core Jamaica audience. So sit back and soak up some authentic island vibes as the platter spins into the dusk.

On this debut EP from Sydney's Cop Envy, the producer comes roaring out of the starting gates with a screeching combo of slow-mo acid and analogue techno. 'BGFT' could easily be tucked away in a Drexciya album somewhere, resonant 303's squeal out a mid-range bass pattern while grainy hi-hats smash out burning strips of saturated fire. 'Inner Another' is a bit more of a minimal affair, percussion loops layering over each-other before rising into a cacophony of sycopated alternate hits, hypnotic groove growing to boiling point before a perfect single-note melody rides the waves perfectly, giving just enough pitched rhythm to keep things moving.  The B-Side jumps straight back into the heat with 'Handle Broker', an echoing and rousing space-acid stormer, as effective and hypnotic as ever, before finishing on the Manse Edit of BGFT, a frantic industrial take on the original track.

            STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A hot and saturated acid trip through space, resonant 303 basslines and skittering analogue drums fly through the cosmos, multiplying into a frenzy of overdriven atmospheres and pitch-perfect percussion.

            A2 Inner Another 5:12

Total Freedom is the long-overdue long-form platter from Philadelphia’s Spacin’, low-key torchbearers of both John Sinclair’s bold program and the “less is more” aesthetic (often much more) exemplified by Lou’s time with Morrison and Tucker and Cale.

Guitarist and vocalist Jason Killinger blazes the path and lead guitarist Paul Sukeena and bassist Sean Hamilton vamp on economical electric chugs while drummer Eva Killinger reprises her role as thee undisputed master of basement motorik. As a handsomely illustrated insert attests, the whole thing is punctuated by flourishes from some of the most celebrated talents of this town’s percolating stew. Blast it soon or remain condemned to a billion years probation.

The bouncy, surf-esque qualities pitch Total Babes a million miles from their Cloud Nothings connections (the bands share the octopus-onamphetamine drumming of Jayson Gerycz), with ‘Heydays’ instantly presenting itself as a beachcombing ode to sweaty summers.

Lead by the undulating basslines of Nathan Ward (Smooth Brain / Cruelster) and fleshed out by warped synth work John Elliot (Emeralds / Outer Space), the choruses are a masterclass in indie rock’s ability to shift perceptions - “I only want to be beautiful,” frontman Christopher Brown cries but it’s in their rough edges that Total Babes really shine.

Finally, a new deep cut from Melbourne’s visceral post-punk band Total Control. Typical System, their second LP, was written, recorded, created over the past two years and is set for US/Worldwide release via Iron Lung Records
            .
Total Control emerged from Australia’s dynamic punk scene in ’08, releasing a succession of 7”s that developed from an aggressive post-punk band sound to studio forays into electronic forms from minimal wave to house. Their debut LP, Henge Beat, was commended as one of the few records released in 2011 that evaded the ease of classification and competent tribute act status of most modern bands.

Subsequently, they have released three very different records: a split 12” with Thee Oh Sees, a 7” single on Sub Pop and a house remix 12”. Typical System develops on the incongruent demands of their debut LP and ensuing releases, a further development on their continually evolving sound.

            Wesley Matsell

            Total Order Of Being

Welsh mystic Wesley Matsell returns to Border Community with an ebullient EP of 90s tinged dance utopianism. File alongside the good-natured old school stylings of Orbital, Lone and The MFA. Thoroughly road tested in the DJ sets of James Holden, the staccato gasps of rave banger ‘Total Order Of Being’ exude a melodious, propulsive appeal.

A trio of companion tracks seal the deal: ‘Future Beacon’ combines sacred, mystical arpeggios and rattling breakbeats; ‘Dowlais Wheelie Crew’s layers of vibrant synths form a decidedly modern groove; and ‘Rite Of Pant’ is a rousing exercise in handmade primal proto-house.

This is the final release in a collectable four part series of limited vinyl (500 copies). All four covers fit together to reveal a larger picture by UK designer Jack Featherstone.

              Deceh / Total Life

              Split

Pressed in an edition of 500 copies and housed in screen printed, hand numbered jackets. Kevin Doria's work as Total Life preceeds his work as half of Growing and continues evolve. Fader is no exception. Deceh's contribution is an extended harmonic magnification of a shruti box, Hammond organ, upright double bass & modular synthesizer. Proper full lengths from both Total Life & Deceh will be issued via Important in 2013.

How To Dress Well is the stage name of songwriter and producer Tom Krell.

His debut album ‘Love Remains’ was widely praised for both its conceptual strength and immediate emotional resonance, and saw Krell credited with having given birth to a new, narcotized strain of R&B that has since spawned a host of imitators.

Now we see him pull back the curtain on a whole new body of work with his new album ‘Total Loss’, released on Weird World and co-produced by Rodaidh McDonald (The xx, King Krule).

                STAFF COMMENTS

Philippa says: Following his Tri Angle LP outing, How To Dress Well is back with more of his post-R&B, slow-fi, synthwave-tinted melancholic pop.

Coming up on a year since their debut self titled LP release (one of the best albums of 2010, hands down!), The Soft Moon presents 'Total Decay', Luis Vasquez continues to conjure a sound fueled tempest that intoxicates with its own post-apocalyptic dust in this new EP!

After two stirring 7" releases and the aforementioned debut album, it was apparent that Vasquez was digging his own niche, an intimate well-spoken whisper, carrying a heavy load of synths that creep and drums that command an uncontrollable pull from within. This intimate peak into another world, Vasquez' mind, has garnered a number of comparisons to some of the most iconic and influential bands of the post punk and krautrock movements.

Live, the band takes on Justin Anastasi and Damon Way to help transform the listening experience cogently with an array of sound and light effects that translate the energy of the recordings. 'Total Decay' solidifies that the Soft Moon is on its own path, not to be compared. Just listen, hold the shadow of his hand on this journey into the darkness, as he whispers directions through the obstacles, to the light...

2008 saw the Oxford quintet rise to prominence with their debut album "Antidotes" entering the UK charts at number three. From these early days playing house parties, to selling-out incendiary tours across the UK and the world, stand-out TV performances, and exhilarating festival appearances, they set the stage perfectly for their much-anticipated sophomore effort "Total Life Forever", including the single "This Orient".

                  Music For Total Chickens

"Music For Total Chickens" is built from bits of pop architecture nailed together in odd forms; it is structurally sound (no pun intended), but at the same time it defies the conventional laws of (pop) physics. There are twisty-turny time signatures, swaddled in chunky guitar fuzz, sweet strings, harmonized 'ooo's and direct lyrical love-notes sometimes riding percussive trails all the way up great crescendos to pinnacles of bangcrash (like if Deerhoof recorded a self-help album).
