    Jacques Greene

Relay - Inc. Skee Mask Remix

The ‘Fantasy’ EP saw Jacques Greene push further into his downtempo and ambient influences than ever before. Now he returns with a special club-tested, extended edit of key EP track ‘Relay’, alongside an incredible Skee Mask remix.

Said mix is frenetic, cerebral and progressive - pairing heavenly synth ripples with both jagged breakbeats and skitty jungle-esque rhythms. Swamped in rich pads and deep bass plumes it recalls the hedonistic & expansive bliss associated with labels like R&S, B12 and XL whilst injecting an urgent and forward-glancing take on vintage dance tropes.

In it's extended form. "Relay" is allowed all the space it needs to dance around that evocative bass and synth interplay. Glowing radiant, moving seductively, with perfectly poised breakdowns and drops; it's the glistening burst of tension and release that every dancefloor needs as it veers into post-peak exuberance and revelry.

'Immaculately produced and mixed, and profoundly effective - both for the pleasure centers it fires, and also for the associations it triggers. It feels like a genetic memory passed down across generations of ravers, encoded in their very DNA.' - Pitchfork.

    Peaches

She was called a ‘heroine’ by the New York Times and has spent the past two decades upending stereotypes and challenging social norms while championing issues of gender equality and sexual identity with biting wit and fearless originality. On her latest releases, she's more direct and defiant than ever.

      1. Pussy Mask

German imprint MASK return in 2021 with yet another inviting anonymous release featuring six raw original cuts. The MASK imprint continue to impress with their signature aesthetic which places focus on intricate, modular based house, techno and ambient cuts and everything in between.
The ‘A1’ gets the EP rolling with muffled drums and enticing moods that sit delicately underneath the soulful, samples and sweeping synths before ‘A2’ offers up resounding kicks that balance delightfully with the reverberating modulations and powerful yet interesting fx. The A3 lays focus on an aquatic house roller with bubbly melodies and dreamy pads with magnetising emotions brimming to the surface. On the flip, the ‘B1’ is an engaging cut with breezy resonance and ethereal leads which lure you in from the start whilst the dubby drums, solemn ambience and laid-back moods take focus in the ‘B2’. Rounding things off in experimental fashion, the ‘B3’ is an eccentric meditative, cut with leftfield oscillations and beatless vibrations which blend together with stunning effect.

Patrick says: There's two things you can guarantee with a MASK 12" - 1. It's gonna fly off the shelves and 2. It's gonna sound absolutely monstrous on a system.
This edition is no exception, working from a 909-laced house riff on Carly's "Why" through immersive and texured modular techno (Barry!) to wriggling electro and ambient bliss. Megoh!

      The Warriors

      Behind The Mask

"Behind The Mask” was originally to be the second Incognito album. Still floating on the high of the success of their debut album “Jazz Funk”, Jean-Paul ‘Bluey’ Maunick started work on new material recruiting friends and strangers from London’s buzzing music scene. Where “Jazz Funk” in 1981 had by name and nature been achieved from the influence of Jazz Funk and Soul music that we had been listening to in the 70’s, “Behind The Mask” from has a strong leaning towards the harder Fusion trend of that time. Innocence and earthy tones were replaced by a bright and bold flurry of cascading arpeggios and screaming solos. Brass arrangements that had been created by singing a man a line were now leaping out of reams of paper scored by the wizard that is Richard Niles. However, still present and leading the charge was the unmistakable, funky, pulsating and irresistible bass lines of the late Paul “Tubbs” Williams.

        Laraaji

Remixes - Inc. Bee Mask / Sun Araw Remixes

As the new wave of New Age begins to gain momentum, All Saints present a new series of 12" featuring modern reinterpretations of forgotten classics from original ambient masters. The first part of this project sees a quartet of modern practitioners of electronic healing sounds reimagining four pieces from the back catalogue of New York's experimental visionary Laraaji. Beginning his career improvising trance inducing jams on a modified autoharp, Laraaji was discovered by Eno, studied with Satchidananda and invented laughter meditation while releasing a prolific discography of new age sounds. Within the recent recontextualisation of that oft maligned genre Laraaji has found a new audience among some Piccadilly shop favourites including Jonathan Wilson and Sun Araw, both of whom invited him to join them on tour. It's the latter who features on this 12", combining his trademark stoned skew with the celestial vibrations of "Tilturn" for a strung out trip into the realm of experimental dub. Elsewhere, Spectrum Spools' Bee Mask injects a dose of bass weight into the cystaline chime of "Cave", Ela Orleans creates the first psyche/breaks hybrid with a driving take on the melodic pulse of "Kalimba" and Motion Sickness Of Time Travel cleanses us with the purifying drone of "Space".

          Bauhaus

          Mask

‘Mask’: Managing the sometimes hard-to-negotiate trick of expanding their sound while retaining all the qualities which got them attention to begin with, ‘Mask’ sees the members of Bauhaus consciously stretch themselves into newer areas of music and performance, resulting in an album that was arguably even better than the band’s almost flawless debut.

More familiar sides of the band were apparent from the get-go; opening number ‘Hair Of The Dog’, one of the band’s best songs, starts with a double-tracked squalling guitar solo before turning into a stomping, surging flow, carefully paced by sudden silences and equally sudden returns to the music, while Murphy details cases of mental addictions in pithy phrases.

The energy wasn’t all just explosive angst and despair, though; the one-two punches of ‘Kick In The Eye’ and ‘In Fear Of Fear’ have as much hip-shaking groove and upbeat swing to them as portentous gloom (Ash’s sax skronk on the latter, as well as on the similarly sharp ‘Dancing’, is a particularly nice touch). Elsewhere, numerous flashes of the band’s quirky sense of humour - something often missed by both fanatical followers and negative critics both - make an appearance; perhaps most amusing is the dry spoken-word lyric beginning ‘Of Lillies And Remains’, as David J details a goofily grotesque situation as much Edward Gorey as Edgar Allen Poe. Add to that three of the most dramatic things the band ever recorded - the charging, keyboard-accompanied ‘The Passion Of Lovers’, the slow, dark fairy-tale-gone-wrong ‘Hollow Hills’, and the wracked, trudging title track, where the sudden appearance of an acoustic guitar turns a great song into a near perfect blend of ugliness and sheer beauty - and the end result was a perfect trouncing of the sophomore-slump myth.

‘Mask’ is packaged in a lavish gatefold cover.

            Dangerdoom

            The Mouse And The Mask

For the first time in a decade Lex reissue a limited quantity of Dangerdoom's 'The Mouse and the Mask'.

The much talked about Danger Mouse and MF DOOM full length collaboration finally comes back! On "The Mouse And The Mask" Dangermouse builds the beats while DOOM raps, while there are guest spots from hip hop superstars Ghostface, Cee Lo and Talib Kweli. Having already produced the Gorillaz "Demon Days" LP, "The Grey Album" (his infamous Jay-Z / Beatles mash-up) and "Ghetto Pop Life" (his hugely acclaimed debut LP with Jemini), DM now teams up with MFD, also well known for just the odd one or two brilliant solo releases ("Operation Doomsday" and "MM... Food"), his work with Madlib as Madvillain, and under disguises King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn. So, with a pedigree like that, can this duo's debut live up to expectations? You betcha!! Along with the likes of Madlib, Common, Kanye West, Outkast etc, these cats are just so far ahead of the game it's untrue!

Lex has a history of lavish packaging but this remains one of the lushest sleeves in the catalogue. Design by EHQuestionmark, the outer vinyl LP sleeve is made from thick translucent textured plastic with DOOM's mask printed on cover, and mouse ears on each side of the mask forming a pattern that looks like a Rorschach test. The inner sleeves, visible through the outer at first glance pattern based on an Ishihara test, but inside the circles in the pattern are tiny icons depicting a different disasters - climate change, acid rain, holy war, nuclear leaks.
