DJ SNEAK

Frosted has pulled off a big one here as they snap up the one and only Chicago house gangster, long-time vinyl advocate and BBQ king, DJ Sneak. His debut on the label goes big, as the man often does, with 'Beat Generation' showcasing his mastery of drum loops and smart filters. It's unrelenting and funky in its own low-key way then a Horns mix brings some extra fun. 'Fair & Square' has an old school feel with sweet little guitar riffs stitched into the arrangement next to yelping vocal as the dusty drums roll on. 'Mother Of Funk' has a deeper feel and will lock you into its warming embrace.

House music legend DJ Sneak drops a 12" on Heist. A veteran of many years in the house game (becoming famous around the mid-90s due to a few pioneering releases on Cajual and Henry St. Music), DJ Sneak seems to have been a constant through the development of the genre.

The aptly titled “Back To Love” the EP starts off with one of Sneak’s most intimate productions to date: “Love Can Make It Happen”. Built around an ever-evolving vocal loop and dreamy strings, this track is deeper than deep with the percussion matching that meditative energy, with the grunt only Sneak can bring.

“Going Back To It” had Chi-town flavour at its core. Moody chords, some vocal chops, a badass bass line and solid percussion is often all you need, perfectly demonstrated here. With "Full Cycle" on the flip, we see Sneak revisit those relentless concentric grooves that became his trademark. Reminding us a little of Carl Craig's Paperclip People project, where the bluntness of a live recorded on/off arrangement really adds something special to a track.

The EP ends with “Pockets”, a house jam with classic 90s vocals and energetic snare drums to add that classic New York touch to proceedings.

Effortlessly mixing both the house legacy of yesteryear with modern, fresh sounds yet miraculously sounding incredibly natural and unforced in the process, Sneak has unleashed an EP that long term fans are gonna eat up, whilst more than satiating today's modern house kids. Expert stuff from the master!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Sneak's been busy of late, this one of three different releases, on different labels, in quick succession. A true veteran of house music, he's lost none of his individuality and charisma over the years; as this release for Heist clearly demonstrates.

DJ Sneak started releasing music around 30 years ago, whilst Hard Times was also knocking out records at the same time from the likes of Masters At Work, Todd Terry and Roger Sanchez. Sneak has played for the legendary club night many times, but this is his first outing on the label. Sneak delivers 4 peak time classic cuts reminiscent of his early work, which fits in perfectly with the equally longstanding Hard Times label. Wild and wriggly house music and it's best! Don't sleep...

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Second-wave Chicago house legend DJ Sneak returns with TWO new twelves this week, one on Kaoz Theory and this one, on Hard Times. He ain't changed the formula, just refined it over time, meaning these four tracks are as seductively grooving as some of his finest tracks. Concentric house music at its best. Check!

Back digging in their prized vaults, Kaoz Theory cherry pick another two classics to be released for the first time on vinyl. Up first, one of Toronto’s finest Demuir enlists the signature soulfulness of Bluey Robinson for a bumping RnB-tinged, hazy house bomb entitled ‘Lusting U’. On the flip, Chicago legend DJ Sneak hits with a underground jackin’ groover ‘Judy Russell’ in trademark Windy City style.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Kaoz Theory cross the streams of Toronto and Chicago with a double header of soulful house goodness that's sure to please. It's also the second outing this week from DJ Sneak who returns to the floor in fine form.

With over 20 years of DJing and more than 20,000 records in his vinyl collection, one of the world’s most talented house heroes, DJ Sneak, lends his tune selection, deck wizardry and pure love of house music to fabric 62. Born Carlos Sosa in Puerto Rico, Sneak was raised to the rhythms of salsa music, before moving to Chicago in 1983, and becoming captivated by the sounds of jazz, funk, soul, disco and of course house music. Originally a graffiti artist, Sneak soon became involved in selling music, starting his own label Defiant and working in the city’s infamous Gramophone record store, where he met artists and industry players, all the while developing his unmistakable jacking style. Releases on house music institutions such as Strictly Rhythm, Classic and Relief, as well as his burgeoning DJ reputation, led to Sneak’s international career blossoming in the 90s and early 00s, with tracks such as ‘You Can’t Hide From Your Bud’ and ‘Fix My Sink’ widely attributed classic status. Now heading up three of his own labels (Magnetic, Oomph and Sneak’s Classics), Sneak remains as relevant as ever, with artists from Ricardo Villalobos to Riva Starr queuing up to DJ and produce in collaboration with the house music legend.

Sneak’s mix is ripe with carefully selected contemporary house nuggets with echoes of Chicago and the jacking house sound he loves, drizzled with elements of techno and dusted with overtones of big band swing, mixed to perfection. Sneak performed and recorded the mix live without the use of any computers, taking a transatlantic trip to bring together bumping Chicago grooves with muscular European techno.
