This 12" single by post rock legends Bark Psychosis, is a beautifully haunting masterpiece, with an incredibly cool sleeve to accompany. Improvised and recorded live in the band's home of St John's Church in 1992, SCUM experimented with the use of space and extreme dynamics, with music that varied between minimal jazzy chording, airy acoustic drums, clamorous noise guitar, space-ambience and random vocal snippets. You can hear why the band have been credited as genre defining. Now a complete reinvention of the original 1992 release on 3rd Stone Records, and the first ever release on Rolling Heads. With updated artwork true to the original, SCUM has been fully remastered at Abbey Road Studios by Miles Showell, with the help of frontman Graham Sutton. It will be pressed in 180g heavyweight black vinyl, and packaged in luxury 300gsm card sleeve, boasting something a little different to the original. This is a beautiful must listen release.

The Become EP is a collection of 5 songs from the Once Twice Melody sessions. We didnít think they fit in the world of OTM, but later realized they all fit in a little world of their own. XTRA EQUIPMENT is a new collection of BODEGA tracks from the same 2020-2021 Trout Studio sessions that spawned BROKEN EQUIPMENT. Much like the songs on BROKEN EQUIPMENT, we were trying to make these tracks extra breezy and hooky as well as more philosophically ambitious than our previous recordings. Even when in the mode of social critique, I personally tend to think of my songwriting as more literary than analytic but here the ‘The Art of Advertising’ and ‘Art and Advertising’ diptych functions as a sort of pop rock treatise on the subtle but crucial distinction between art and advertising (’Art creates cosmos’ whereas advertising ‘surface(s) status quo’). ‘Everybody’s Sad’ (the THROWN b-side) highlights and bemoans the connection between the current pop obsession with individuality and the aesthetics of melancholy (‘everybody’s sad at the top of the billboard’). ‘Top Hat No Rabbit’ (the DOERS b-side) was written coming down from a Ulysses(Joyce) induced high —> it’s a flurry of thoughts attempting to reconcile free will (necessary for any change) with my deep-seated belief (and BODEGA obsession) that all thought is determined (or ‘thrown’) by external and/ or physical stimuli. Conversely, I wrote the opening ballad ’Memorize w/ yr Heart’ (previously only available as a bonus track on the BROKEN EQUIPMENT CD) to remind myself not to get stuck in abstract mind games —> most of all philosophy should be done with the body (or at least with a steady backbeat). In some ways every recording is a response to an earlier record; BROKEN and XTRA EQUIPMENT were written to both expand upon our previous strengths as well as explore terrain outside of the post-punk milieu we found ourselves painting in previously. I hesitate to say that any recording of a single song is ‘better’ than another (they are just different versions of a tune) but the synth and drum machine led ‘Post yr Kilimanjaro’ (a recent reworking of our nu wave jammer ‘Doers’) sounds much closer to what I had in mind when I wrote the track. We also recorded two covers very different in timbre from their original source(s): Fugazi’s ‘Provisional’ was originally recorded for a Ripcord Records comp to raise funds for an animal shelter in Scotland (we are vegans) and Stretch Arm Strong’s ‘For the Record’ is a loving homage to one of the most important band’s in my life. I spent most of my youth in Columbia, South Carolina (where Stretch are from) and it was as a teen at their all ages hardcore matinees where I first experienced DIY music in the flesh. (‘We sweat and sang together and it helped us to carry on’).

Expanded Edition of the long out of print Mount Wittenberg Orca LP, Dirty Projectors' critically acclaimed collaborative album with Icelandic legend Bjork. The original seven-song collection was written to be performed unamplified in a small Manhattan bookstore called Housing Works inspired by a conversation between Dirty Projectors band leader David Longstreth and Bjo?rk about the small theatres in Italy where opera was born in the 1500s. The result feels like part children's story, part choral music from some strange future. It's unlike anything else in the Projectors' body of work: drums and guitars are all but absent. It's all about voices here - and the voices are astonishing. Bjo?rk sounds seismic and elemental and Longstreth, sharing lead vocal duties, intones with his trademark croon. The Projectors' singers Amber Coffman, Angel Deradoorian and Haley Dekle add magical 3-part vocal harmonies. The recording was informed by the simple, direct feel of early rock & roll recordings from the '50s. The band and Bjo?rk rehearsed for three days at the Rare Book Room in Brooklyn, and then recorded the songs as quickly and as live as possible, overdubbing only lead vocals and solos. The 2xLP Expanded Edition adds 13 bonus tracks of never-before-released material including the live Housing Works performance from 2009, early demos of Mount Wittenberg Orca and archival audio of the band and Bjork rehearsing the material. Far Out Recordings proudly presents laid back Brazilian groove maestro Joao Donato's synth-heavy collaboration with his son Donatinho

Sintetizamor sees the father- son duo jovially hurtle through space and time across ten tracks of sparkling pop, Brazilian boogie and club friendly disco-funk. Joao Donato has been a hugely influential figure in the development of Brazilian music since the mid-1950's. He's played and recorded with virtually every one of his fellow Brazilian masters. Many of his own albums (of which he's recorded over three- dozen) are regarded with such adulation that 'cult- favourites' doesn't quite cut it. Aged 82 at the time, Donato's collaboration with his prodigious, synth obsessed son Donatinho - whose keyboard talents have been called on by the likes of the late Gal Costa, Djavan and Donatinho's contemporaries such as Diogo Strausz - was originally released back in 2017, as a limited Brazil-only release. For Record Store Day 2023, Sintetizamor will be available on vinyl (for the first time outside of Brazil) from participating stores.

Greg Jarvis, front man of The Flowers of Hell, has created something very special; the artwork features a die cut outer sleeve, revealing the printed inner sleeve and when removed, revealing more artwork on the inside of the 300gsm outer sleeve. This new pressing of "RISING" will be pressed on Eco vinyl, using offcuts and waste from other vinyl pressing runs, melting them down and creating new records from the vinyl waste. Darren Hayman's 2012 classic LP "Lido" gets the deluxe reissue treatment this record store day - an all-new 12" transparent vinyl with a 16 page 12x12" book of Darren's Lido artwork. As was the original, this is a joint release between Clay Pipe and wiaiwya. I was thinking about instrumental music and whether it could truly be about something. I was thinking about how classical, jazz and the avant-garde often group music together under conceptual titles and themes. Isnít a lot of this music about music itself? Isn't instrumental music literally about the unspeakable, the indescribable? My friend Dave says that he see no reason why wordless music should be any less about ësomethingí then lyrics or prose. I think he's right, but I also know that some music that is titled and thematically labelled is nothing more than the beautiful sound of a musician trying to reach out; to evoke; to remember. My name is Darren Hayman and I have made an instrumental album about Britainís open air swimming pools; it's called 'Lido'. If I am known or liked for anything at all in my career then it is for my lyrics. I see words as incisive, accurate tools, when used correctly. I donít want my words to paint vague canvasses; I want them to make detailed, forensic technical drawings. I am interested in specifics; my songs thus far have very much been about stuff. In my own listening, however, I have moved more and more towards instrumental music. I enjoy the heavenly fog of the ECM label. I love following the unpredictability of John Coltrane's reckless career. I adore roots dub reggae - it makes me feel safe and calm. Instrumental music has given me something that has been missing from my listening for a few years. It confuses, frustrates and excites me, and in no way do I feel it a less erudite companion to lyrical music. The opposite is true, in fact: this music can often say more, I just love not being able to define what it is. Cautiously, over the last few years, I started to amass recordings of my instrumental compositions. When I had five that I thought were good, I needed a title that might pull these sunny, open tunes together; I thought of 'Lido'. From that point onwards I tried to think about what it would be to write music with a specific setting in mind. I tried to write the tunes in my head, while visiting the individual pools. I collected field recordings and buried them inside the songs. Some were audible but I wanted to link the music to the place in some way. When it came to writing tunes about closed or destroyed lidos, I thought about absence and nothingness. I thought about disconnected music; tunes without formal structure or time signatures. I have not re-invented the wheel but this was a truly experimental record for me in that I devised routines and procedures that produced music alien to me. I thought hard about Brentwood Lido, in my hometown. It closed in 1976, when I was just five. It is one of those places that have slipped past the internet. I can find only two grey, fuzzy pictures online. Do you have any pictures of it? Iíd love to see them. My own memory of the place is also fuzzy: one of those early childhood memories that seems to be projected onto sunlight. If you think hard or try to grasp it in any way then it just melts. I can see a towel; there is a low wall or steps maybe? My mother is there some other people... It's sunny but then there's nothing there's no focus or clarity to the memory. If instrumental music can be about anything then surely it can be about this feeling; the sensation of fumbling, desperately, in the back of your mind. Looking for something beautiful that you know was there once. I wanted to make music that sounded half remembered but purposeful. I went to the road where the pool used to be. I recorded nothing but the faint rumble of traffic and put in my tune. My album 'Lido' is about open air swimming pools and something else as well. The Hoax formed in Manchester in 1979 with the original line up of Ian Chambers (vocals), Steve Mardy (bass), Andy Farley (guitar) and Mike Joyce (drums). They rehearsed at the now legendary TJM studios along with other Manchester punk bands such as Joy Division, Buzzcocks, The Fall, Slaughter and The Dogs etc. After a handful of gigs at some of Manchester's long forgotten venues it was time to enter the studio to record their first ep. Cargo in Rochdale was the obvious choice as this was the favourite studio of Manchester's punk elite. After three more releases and a handful of line-up changes The Hoax called it a day. Ian left after the first recordings, Steve went onto pursue a career outside the music industry, Andy kept the band going til the final release in 1981 and Mike Joyce went on to join The Smiths and the rest is history. This limited edition (500) coloured release for RSD is a compilation of The Hoax first three ep's all recorded at Cargo studios in Rochdale. A perfect document to highlight the spirit and diy ethos of the Manchester Punk Scene. Play loud and ENJOY!

This is Honey Bane's first vinyl release in 40 years. Music's biggest rebel turned her back on the scene in 1983, after a string of successful punk/new wave singles. Violence Grows is Bane's 1978 debut, which she wrote at just 14 years old. She recorded it under her band, Fatal Microbes. The single has been reissued, with digitally remastered audio and pressed on limited edition, "bruised" black and blue 12 inch vinyl. Gilles Peterson has been given the keys to Warnerís impressive Jazz back-catalogue and hand-selected Yusef Lateefís legendary Detroit Latitude 42∞ 30' Longitude 83∞ for Arc Records next release. This is the first time the album has been reissued on vinyl since its originally came out in 1969. The album is Lateefís nostalgic love-letter to his hometown and one of the rawest works in his catalogue but the record looks forward as well as back. The compositions are laced with the seeds of 70s Jazz Funk that would come to dominate the following decade. Arc Records have given this overlooked piece in Lateefís oeuvre a bespoke reissue treatment. The audio has been remastered in mono from the original tapes by legendary engineer Bernie Grundman - best known for personally mastering industry landmarks such as Michael Jacksonís ìThrillerî, Princeís ìPurple Rainî and Dr. Dreís ìThe Chronicî among many others. The artwork, printed on heavy-weight card, is faithful to the original down to the 1960ís-style tip on sleeve and features the original sleeve notes alongside updated liner notes. The record itself is pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. The release is physical only and limited to just 2000 copies.

Denton, TX indie folk-rock pioneers Midlake announce their first catalogspanning double live album, ‘Live At The Roundhouse’.

Recorded at London’s historic Roundhouse in April 2022, the album includes material from their latest album For The Sake Of Bethel Woods, fan favorites from 2013’s exploratory Antiphon, dark psych-folk thickets of 2010’s The Courage of Others, and the highly wondrous and critically acclaimed modern classics of 2006’s The Trials of Van Occupanther.

A pivotal city to the band’s success and their dedicated fanbase, London was the obvious show to record during their most recent tour. Midlake’s Eric Pulido shares, “Since our early days, London has been like a second home. We’ve been embraced so warmly all of these years and knew our show at The Roundhouse would serve as the perfect night to celebrate our 20-year relationship with our first live album.”

A long overdue retrospective, Live at Roundhouse includes 75+ minutes of music including Midlake classics “Roscoe,” “The Old and the Young,” “Head Home,” and “Acts of Man,” featuring vocals from singer/songwriter Bess Atwell.

Senza Sapere Niente di Lei (1969, Luigi Comencini) is one of the first scores composed by Ennio Morricone for a Giallo film, just ahead of the great season of the cult Italian thrilling genre forged by Dario Argento. 12" yellow 1LP, gatefold Morricone's score has never been issued on vinyl. They were recorded in 2004 immediately after the sessions that produced Don't Give Up On Me as the title track for Solomon Burke's comeback album. This is a strictly one-off vinyl pressing for RSD. STORY… None of the material on this RSD release has ever been heard by the public or made available previously in any format. These Dan Penn demos were the blueprint for an album he later produced by singer Bobby Purify with a stellar cast of Muscle Shoals session men that was released in 2005. That record was deleted soon after release when "Bobby" reverting to his own name Ben Moore, joined the Blind Boys of Alabama and continued performing with them until his death in May 2022."

Poison Girls "Hex" was first recorded and released in 1979. The recordings were produced by Penny Rimbaud and the band was led by vocalist Vi Subversa. Poison Girls came up on the punk wave, but Vi was obviously not your typical frontwoman. She was a 44-year-old mother, singing about life as a single parent. A unique and powerful voice both then and now. The album was recorded live in the studio, with precious few overdubs. This creates an immediacy and urgency to the performances. It bristles with the energy of anger, paranoia, hopelessness, helplessness, mental fragility and full-on anguish. Vi Subversa took no prisoners. The stunning gatefold sleeve contains new insightful liner notes by founding guitarist Richard Famous. In addition, an insert is included with complete song lyrics and rare archival band photos overseen by the Poison Girls bass player, Bernhardt Rebours. This vinyl format of ëHexí is a 2023 Record Store Day exclusive. It is an 8 song 12ì LP, to be played at 45 RPM, and pressed on Blood Red vinyl. This record, from 1979, was streets ahead of its time. POLIÇA, founded by vocalist Channy Leaneagh and producer Ryan Olson out of the ashes of Minneapolis collective Gayngs, and featuring Drew Christopherson, and Ben Ivascu on drums and Chris Bierden on bass, came seemingly from nowhere with their debut ‘Give You The Ghost’, released in April 2012 and which became one of that year’s most beloved albums. 

Born out of a tumultuous, head spinning subsequent 18 months POLIÇA released their second album Shulamith in October 2013, the album named in homage to pioneering feminist activist and thinker Shulamith Firestone with cover banned by Apple and hit singles including “Chain My Name” and the Justin Vernon featuring “Tiff”.

Musically, ‘Shulamith’ demonstrated an increased mastery and extension of the unique sonic palette that POLIÇA mined on their debut album. The recording process was naturally a more collaborative process than their debut, with the band reacting to and working off Olsen’s beats, drawing on elements of R&B, electronica and dub to create a sound that, already, this early in their career, is uniquely and identifiably their own. Leaneagh’s continued exploration of, and increased control over the effects processor to manipulate and enhance her already outstanding voice take her vocals to new and unusual heights.

'Shulamith' reaffirmed POLIÇA as one of the most fascinating and vital groups in forward-thinking pop. Ultimately, Channy succinctly summed up the ideas and themes behind ‘Shulamith’, and POLIÇA as follows: “Drums. Bass. Synths. Me, Women”.

Queen Talk: Live at the Left Bank is an official never-before-seen concert recording from one of the greatest female jazz organists of all-time, Shirley Scott

With George Coleman on tenor saxophone and Bobby Durham on drums completing a powerhouse trio, this hand-numbered (to 3,000), double LP set was transferred from the original tape reels and is pressed on 180- gram vinyl. It features 100 minutes of music and is packaged in a gatefold sleeve with an extensive booklet containing liner notes by acclaimed music writer A. Scott Galloway, rare photos by Don Schlitten and Raymond Ross, and memorabilia from the Left Bank archives.

Jazz heads can also find interviews with jazz organ icon Joey DeFrancesco, Scott’s former bandmate saxophonist Tim Warfield, and pianist Monty reminiscing about drummer Bobby Durham. The set is co- produced by label owner musician Cory Weeds and renowned archival recording producer Zev Feldman.

The show was recorded at the Famous Ballroom in Baltimore Maryland on August 20, 1972 and hasn’t ever been previously available. Philadelphia- born Scott rose to fame in the late 1950s playing the Hammond B-3 organ influenced by blues and gospel evolving into '60s soul jazz. She recorded numerous albums for Prestige, Impulse!, Atlantic, Cadet and Candid performing with countless jazz legends including Stanley Turrentine, Oliver Nelson and Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis.

Originally released in February 1973 on the ABC Dunhill Record label, in the US, and on the UK Philips label in May 1973, Cameo is one of Dusty’s most overlooked albums, featuring some of her greatest vocal performances of the era on material written by major songwriters including David Gates, Ashford & Simpson and Van Morrison. Recorded in the US between July and October 1972, Cameo was produced by Steve Barri, Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter who later went on to write and produce major hits for Glen Campbell and The Four Tops, among others.

A stellar line-up of musicians contribute to the superb sound (including members of the famous ‘Wrecking Crew’), Hal Blaine, Larry Carlton, Wilton Felder, Carol Kaye, Michael Omartian, Venetta Fields and Clydie King.
Among the many highlights are Learn to Say Goodbye – a masterpiece of tortured soul, with a sublime string arrangement, the brilliant opening track Who Gets Your Love and David Gates' heart-breaking The Other Side of Life. Her beautiful rendition of Van Morrison’s Tupelo Honey even transcends the master’s original.

OOH DO U FINK U R’ is a gloriously sunny, optimistic and defiant Motown and ‘60’s R&B influenced stomper drawing on Suggs and Weller’s upbringing in Britain’s 1970’s comprehensive school system in London and Woking respectively. This picture disc is a Record Store Day 2023 exclusive, following from the sold out limited 7” release from June ’22. Having known each other on-and-off over the last four decades, the seeds of this collaboration emerged in 2019 when Weller joined Suggs on his Radio Four series ‘Love Letters To London’ to talk about an ever changing Soho. As the world subsequently went into lockdown in 2020, the pair started chatting more and more frequently about music, clothes and football, eventually exchanging half finished songs, demos and sketches of lyrics. With its working class aesthetic, Motown influenced stomp, and uplifting brass, it’s an intuitive collaboration that sits neatly as a welcome addition to both men’s great songbooks.

This Sun Ra 1980 solo set at Haverford College has been kicking around the internet and in the digital libraries of Ra collectors for years, though it has not previously been properly mastered or commercially issued and like many events in Ra's history, this gig has a story that goes beyond the music

Ra's presence onstage that night came about through an unforeseen chain of events that unfolded up until concert time. This is a very unique performance. Sun Ra is notorious for his aggressive keyboard attack and seemingly schizophrenic stylings-- which can musically rocket from A to Z and back without transitional bridges. This set offers a marked contrast. Ra's instrument here is the celeste- like Fender Rhodes electric piano, which has a distinct sound (instantly recognizable in the Doors' "Riders on the Storm") and an interesting history. There are few pyrotechnics in this performance, and much restraint. Ra sounds relaxed and contemplative. It's Soothing Sounds for Saturnians.

The meditative concert covers Ra's customary approach to solo outings: 1) original Ra crowd pleasers ("Space is the Place," "Love in Outer Space"); 2) standards ("St. Louis Blues," "Rhapsody in Blue," "Over the Rainbow"); and 3) untitled improvisations (here assigned the titles "Haverford Impromptu" numbers one and two).
