Kalahari Surfers

Censorship Is Killing Music (Gross National Products 1981-1989)

South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was - from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

My Life Story

Loving You Is Killing Me

My Life Story return with their fifth studio album ‘Loving You Is Killing Me’, which was mixed by Ben Hillier who produced two Depeche Mode Albums as well as working with Blur, Patrick Wolf, Nadine Shah and Peter Perrett. It features original artwork by the brilliant Scot Greenwell at Darc Artz, woven together by graphic artist supremo Ben Gilbey.

Jake said: “This time we wanted to record songs as soon as we’d written them, attempting to instantly capture the spirit and emotion and hermetically sealing in the freshness by releasing them as soon as humanly possible”.

“It’s kind of the opposite to a concept album. I didn’t really want to give ourselves time to overthink a grand plan, in some ways we are recapturing the gung-ho spirit of when the band started out in 1985! It’s an eclectic mix of stand-out songs that sing for themselves.”

Killing Eve: Season Two (Original Series Soundtrack)

As post-episode surges towards song-seeking app Shazam testify, Holmes and music supervisor Catherine Grieves left no box unmarked with their BAFTA-winning music for Seasons 1 and 2 of BBC America’s Killing Eve. Adapted from Luke Jennings’ Codename Villanelle novellas by lead-writers Phoebe Waller-Bridge (S1) and Emerald Fennell (S2), the Emmy-winning spy series has established itself as a swaggering, slippery, playful and punchy thriller of cat/mouse obsession like no other. And it comes with killer soundtracks to match, modern classics of pick’n’mix curation cut from the cloth of cinematic style but tailored with a moody, mischievous vivacity of their own

As Grieves tells the tale, it became clear during early talks that strong female voices, multiple artists and a great composer would be crucial ingredients of the show’s music. A music supervisor whose work has ranged from The Inbetweeners Movie to Lynne Ramsay’s You Were Never Really Here via various TV hits (Wolf Hall, Collateral, The Casual Vacancy and beyond), Grieves already knew of the Belfast-born Holmes’ formidable CV. In between his work as a DJ, rock’n’soul remix artist and band-leader, Holmes’ screen output has ranged from music movies (Good Vibrations) and sundry retro-cool Steven Soderbergh pics (Out of Sight, the Ocean’s Eleven/Twelve/Thirteen trilogy and more) to various stylish TV dramas, among them London Spy.

            Sissy And The Blisters

            Killing Time

Sissy & The Blisters release their new double Aside single, ‘Killing Time’ on new label Not So Pretty.

“The Vaccines, The Strokes and Interpol are contemporary references, but the roots of Sissy & The Blisters feel a lot deeper - taking in everything from Thee Headcoatees to The Standells. Fans of garage rock take note” - Independent

“The sound of scurrilously reinvented garage pop falling time in a massive egg timer” - Steve Lamacq, 6Music

“A riot of doom-laden garage rock” - Sunday Times Culture

After careful, weeklong consideration, San Francisco trio Terry Malts went forth to record a debut LP as per the request of Slumberland Records. Displaying a slick, intelligent take on modern chainsaw pop, Killing Time certainly lives up to its name! Who are Terry Malts? A Yellow Pages private dick has gleaned the following: Corey Cunningham (guitar, backing vox), of Dickson, Tennessee-by-way-of-a-cardboard-box-in-Toronto, was asked to housesit in Fresno, CA. Duties fulfilled, he shot north on a graffiti trip to 924 Gilman Street and immediately bonded with fellow men's room "artists" Phil Benson (bass guitar, lead vox) and the unfortunately named Nathan Sweatt (drums, backing vox). Hands shook, vibes exchanged; the trio felt compelled to distill their energy into a unified voice.

The Terrys' gospel is succinct, direct, sincere and timed expertly with next year's looming apocalypse: life is hopeless, enjoy! With a live reputation that bleeds funky "punk" attitude, the trio crammed this urgency into the Terry Malts studio edition. Recorded by a machine, then expertly mixed by human being Monte Vallier (Swell, Half Church), Killing Time may compel you to type the following buzzwords into your blog (which, I love, by the way!): catchy, husky, hunky, sharp, blue-collar, rocking, hockey-rock, working-class, perfect, near-perfect, nothalf- bad, and / or not-bad. It's an album, it's a lifestyle, it's a 34-minute hour of pure, unadulterated Malts... all right?
