    Thelonious Monk Quartet

    Monk's Dream - 2023 Reissue

'Monk's Dream' was the first album Thelonious Monk released on Columbia Records after his less than amicable departure from Riverside Records. Even though Monk had already recorded all the tracks on the album before (apart from Bright Mississippi), in a variety of settings, the powerful cohesion of the quartet this Columbia session produced a first-rate work worthy of the praises it received when released, and which it still receives today. It was Monk's best-selling album ever.

"This important album, Monk's first after a long absence from the recording studio, is a stunning reaffirmation of his power as a performer and composer. It is a brilliant and absorbing program of five Monk originals and three standards (and they might just as well be originals, so startling is their transformation at his hands). This is a beautiful album in every respect, completely stimulating in each second of its more than 47 minutes" - ***** Pete Welding, DownBeat

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk

Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers With Thelonious Monk

A Deluxe Edition fully Remastered with a whole extra Disc of Outtakes all but one previously unreleased, with liner notes by Grammy-winner writer Ashley Kahn, photos and Atlantic memorabilia

In May of 1957, Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers went into the studio with Thelonious Monk to record a one-off album for Atlantic. The Jazz Messengers were a loose collective of young Jazz musicians, with a constantly rotating lineup to keep the music fresh, and help launch new careers (akin to today’s hip hop collectives.)

Blakey had recorded with Monk on various occasions, but this was the first time Monk sat in with the Jazz Messengers. The result is a true meeting of the minds, a beautiful union of Monk’s melodies with Blakey’s unshakable sense of swing, and Thelonious Monk’s only appearance on Atlantic. This 65thanniversary deluxe edition includes an extra disc of previously unreleased outtakes, celebrating the most sensational jazz collaboration of the 1950s.

Art Blakey, drums; Thelonious Monk, piano; Johnny Griffin, tenor saxophone; Bill Hardman, trumpet; and Spanky Debrest, bass.

          Thelonious Monk

          Monk's Music

Monk’s Music’ the classic 1957 album by the Thelonious Monk Septet + 2 bonus tracks.

Contains new specially prepared liner notes by Penguin Guide To Jazz writer Brian Morton, and by Paris’ prestigious Jazz Magazine.

“But the album title really goes further than that. This is Thelonious Monk’s music in the most complete sense. These sessions have been particularly valued for the presence of Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane, two saxophone giants from different generations.

Some accounts of the recordings devote more space to the horns than to the leader. So, listen carefully to how humbly Coltrane plays on “Ruby My Dear”. He was still an emerging artist, to be sure, but his command of the instrument was complete, and he didn’t usually play with this reserve. Hawkins, by contrast, is determined to make his presence felt. He even comes in at the wrong place a couple of times.” Brian Morton
