Aesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman

Lice

Both Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman are regarded as top tier lyricists known for pushing the envelope of creativity in their writing, while covering a wide range of topics and moods. However, sometimes things are inherently simple. Take for example, the origin of their collaboration, born from a mutual appreciation for each other as artists which became fully realized when Aesop Rock invited Homeboy Sandman to join him on tour in 2015. Traveling the country together, they built a connection beyond the music, resulting in a friendship that led to recording a few songs together, and before they knew it, "Lice" was conceived.

Initially released in 2015 as a free direct download, followed by an extremely limited vinyl pressing sold exclusively on tour, Aesop Rock and Homeboy Sandman's "Lice" is finally available to fans everywhere. The first in a series of EP releases, "Lice" featured production from DJ Spinna, Optiks, Blockhead, Alex 'Apex' Gale and Mike Shinoda. The original cover art was designed by renowned illustrator Jeremy Fish.

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: My favourite of the three records. There's just something almost telepathic about their interplay and question & answer flow. Both rappers possess a unique voice, both sharp and drawl in equal measure - it must be a New York thing!

STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Concluding the tryptic on a lyrical high, Homeboy and Aesop collude on subject matter such as parent's disappoint, food, pandemic woes and a whole host of other quick-witting, sharp observations. Two of the most unique voices in the rap game; the production is deliciously old skool - with whiffs of boom-bap mixed in with experimental sample usage and skeletal instrumentals. A masterpiece!

Homeboy Sandman

Anjelitu

Produced by and featuring Aesop Rock. “I wrote half of these songs when my energy was either headed in the wrong direction or already there. I wrote the other half while my energy was moving in a direction I’m more excited about, that I find to be more enriching. They’re all still my songs though. My mother, and lots of my relatives, used to call me “Angelito.” Little Angel. The taijitu is the symbol for yin and yang. Opposites that make a whole. Given the dualistic/duelistic nature of the songs on the record, put it all together and what do you get, Anjelitu.” - Homeboy Sandman

'Anjelitu' sees hip-hop legend Aesop Rock produce and MC to great effect, tempering Homeboy Sandman's sometimes frenetic wordplay into a brilliant juxtaposition of energy and groove. Pieces like 'FYI' are one of the more soul-led examples of Sandman's production, while the whacked out proto funk of 'No Beef' erfectly displays his ability to get super weird. It's a testament to the skills of both Sandman and Aesop Rock that these pieces can come from such a polar selection of pieces and maintain their composure and flow.
