This reissue includes two never- before- released tracks: 'Nobody Knows', recorded during the same sessions, and a deeply moving rendition of Graham Nash's 'Military Madness'.

    Kathy Smith

    Kathy Smith 2 - 2025 Reissue

Originally released in 1971, 'Kathy Smith 2' was singer-songwriter Kathy Smith's most daring and accomplished creation, an innovative fusion of psychedelic folk and jazz.

Smith emerged from the same Orange County, Californian milieu as Tim Buckley and Jackson Browne. Championed by singer- songwriter- guitarist Richie Havens, Kathy recorded two hauntingly beautiful albums, 'Some Songs I've Saved' and 'Kathy Smith 2', for his Stormy Forest label, and then quietly disappeared from the scene. 'Kathy Smith 2', presented here, is the first authorised reissue of the LP.

Highlighted by Kathy's own exquisite compositions like 'Fly off with the Wind' and 'For Emile', it also includes her unique interpretations of songs by Jimmie Spheeris and Jackson Browne. This is the first official reissue - 180g vinyl in deluxe gatefold packaging.

Her superlative voice is supported by a team of heavyweight studio musicians, among them Jan Hammer, Warren Bernhardt, Tony Levin, Jerry Jemmott, Don Alias and Jeremy Steig.

Remastered from the original analogue tapes, this edition includes two exceptional previously unreleased bonus tracks - 'For Emile' (demo version), and 'Hang On To A Dream'.

MAL welcomes Hiroshi Takakura aka Element & co-owner of Riddim Chango Records with a heavyweight session of deep roots mutations and dynamic steppers.

A truly unique and well loved character, Hiroshi is one of Japan’s key figures for dub wise experimentation and this release presents a decade of influence distilled into a selection that bridges Jamaican and UK lineages with a very personal slant.

The centrepiece, ‘Longest Summer Pt.1 & 2’, is a radical remake of the theme from Fruit Chan’s Hong Kong cult film. He flips the wistful, naïve melancholy of the original alongside deep bass weight and syncopated hats with a slink and roll that feels as well suited to the steaming tarmac of LA as any smoke laced, late night Blues dance.

Born from the momentum of live set preparation, the raw sketches that make up the ep were shaped into full-blown dancefloor weapons, particularly the percussion-heavy, tribal mayhem of the title track, ‘Motion Exchange’.

All in all the release captures a snapshot of heady obsessions: UK roots and dub pressure channeling echoes of Jah Shaka, Jamaican dancehall’s roughneck energy, and a wide selection of experimental electronic influences from the early 80’s to the present day.

Motion Exchange delivers a weighty steppers sound that honours its roots while pushing into bold, forward-thinking territory.

Like Element’s sets, this is music for the rig but has layers of detail that reveal themselves on repeat listens and in selector tradition, the EP offers multiple versions for extended play.

A further milestone in MAL’s journey, with Takakura charting heavy new territories in modern dub. RIYL 5 Gate Temple / Bokeh Versions / Lord Tusk / Seln etc.

        Megan Sue Hicks

        Maranatha

A holy grail for collectors of rare folk, 'Maranatha' (1972) is the sole LP by American singer-songwriter Megan Sue Hicks.

With only 200 copies ever pressed by Warner Australia, it ranks among the most elusive treasures of the early '70s folk- rock scene. Its introspective lyrics, haunting vocals, and delicate acoustic arrangements evoke the spirit of Vashti Bunyan and Judee Sill, while its songs weave pure emotion into slightly off-kilter musical shapes.

A deeply personal and spiritually tinged folk masterpiece, 'Maranatha' is more than a record - it's a rare artifact of a lost moment in music history. The prices on Discogs regularly topping GBP400.

Deluxe 180g reissue including original artwork.

          Elements Of Life

Maria Fumaca / Giant Steps (Tito Puente Tribute)

A Vega Records special edition 7” by Elements Of Life with sneak peaks of two new Elements Of Life tracks from the forthcoming 2026 album “Dreamer”.

Side A is a brilliant cover of the famed Brazilian band Black Banda Rio’s “Maria Fumaca”.

Side B an energetic Latin jazz infused cover of John Coltrane’s ultra class “Giant Steps” done up Rumba style tributing the great Tito Puente with special guest, the maestro Christian McBride on upright bass. Elements Of Life are on fiyaaah - and it’s just the beginning!

          STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Like overly competitive brothers, Louie wasn't gonna let Kenny get away with dropping a killer Latin 7" ("Que Se Sepa") without returning fire. So he enlisted Elements Of Life to cover the Brazilian classic "Maria Fumaca" as well as penning an Rumba-themed cover of John Coltraine. Let battle commence - rumble in the rumba anyone?! (sorry).

          Elements

A Spectral Voyage, Aural Abstraction Area

Tasty album of bedroom electronica, sampledelic downbeat and hefty bass excursions by this local but allusive producer: Elements.

Some parts drift along in a BOC / Two Lone Swordsman esque revelry; others are direct, jugular bursting beams of bass and rhythm, destined to shake the more leftfield warehouses and squat parties. Promising stuff - hopefully we'll hear more from Elements!

          STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Keen and inventive set of uncategorizable machine murmurings from a local circuit bender. Nice live drum kits juxtaposed against the quite sophisticated electronix with plenty of roomy arrangements. Very nice!

          7. Nebula
          8. 115 (Unobtainium)

LN000 presents three electro tools rooted in the essence of the D. “Black Elements”, the title track, is a hypnotic journey crafted for DJ and cruising use. The looping pads and percussive bassline entrance the listener as the bed of 808 beats keep the dancefloor busy. On the B-side, “KAH” offers an exploration in the realm of electro funk. Neck snapping snares, thunderous kicks, a tweaked out bassline, and heavy breakdowns can be found in this track; this one is for the dancers. “2 Motor” closes out the EP with an energetic electro excursion. Tight beats, an anthemic lead, crashing cymbals, a dope bassline, and some funky sound design drive this track.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Having Mad Mike as a mentor is every techno producer and label owner's dream. Max Watts doesn't squander the chance as he continues to paint a deliciously real and gritty picture of Detroit techno in 2025.

          Surman + Krog

          Electric Element

Unreleased electronic / jazz / madness from two titans of jazz and experimentation: JOHN SURMAN and KARIN KROG.

I could now write a load of blown up puffery about how amazing this is, but everyone does that, and a lot of the time it’s all a load of bollocks. But basically this was sent to me by Karin / John when I asked if they had anything hanging about that had not been released. This came through and blew my tiny mind. Like something from prime Annette Peacock “Pony” period. Here is what John Surman said…

            John Surman writes:
Back in 2012/13 there had been some talk about a big futuristic open air urban dance/theatre production for about 80/100 actors/dancers with lasers and all kinds of lighting effects on different stages. I was invited to get involved and, together with Ben and Karin, we eventually decided to get to work on some ideas. I think that the original plan was that in performance there would be a mixture of live music and electronica.

Not altogether surprisingly, bearing in mind the complexity of the project, it never moved forward and developed into anything more than an interesting idea. It was probably over ambitious & I guess the funding never came through.

The only information I that I can find relating to the production refers to two silent movies made in 1927/1928 by the filmmaker Eugene Deslaw, entitled `La Marche Des Machines´ and `Les Nuits Électriques. These were clearly intended to act as inspiration for the project.

After months turned into years it became obvious that the project was going nowhere, and so the recorded music laid around gathering dust until Johnny Trunk asked Karin if she had any interesting music that he might be interested in releasing. One thing led to another and so, finally, Electric Element found a home!

For anyone interested in the equipment used this will have to be an approximation since the memory might be playing tricks. Karin was probably using a Yamaha Rex50 f/x unit, a Roland VT-3 Voice Transformer and an Oberheim Ring Modulator. I was playing Bass Clarinet and Contrabass Clarinet through various f/x units together with a Yamaha WX5 wind synth. All the instruments and voice were also processed through Ben´s equipment. After writing this I asked Ben for his recollections and he came up with the following:

John, Karin and I created this music in 2 or 3 days in the winter of 2013 at their studio in Oslo, Norway. I followed up with another 2 or 3 days of mixing, editing and post-processing . We kept a collaborative, improvisational and free-form approach to the sessions. I grew up immersed in music such as Cloudline Blue, the 1979 duo album of Krog/Surman, and this felt like a similar approach. I have mixed sound for many of their live duo concerts and I would use effects and electronics as an
accompaniment and counterpoint to the performed music. The relation of organic and artificial sound sources in music has always fascinated. In this case, I used some contemporary digital signal processing to introduce my own aesthetic into the conversation, in particular using granular synthesis to recombine small 'clouds' of sound into alternate forms. Some of the software tools I used included Ableton Live, Max/MSP and Reaktor.

The 5th release from Tokyo's experimental dub label newdubhall. Following the impressive works of Babe Roots and DeadBeat, this time they bring you Element, a producer hailing from Kyoto.

Building on Element's previous successes, such as 2021's "Freedom" (Riddim Chango) featuring captivating vocals of Nazamba, and 2022's "Andromeda EP" (Bokeh Versions / Riddim Chango) which showcased the collaboration with Duppy Gun, he continues to push boundaries.

On Side A, titled "Particular Angle," Element presents a mesmerizing blend of new roots, grime, and dub techno, intricately woven together to create a weighty dub soundscape. This side is a testament to Element's mastery, as they effortlessly navigate these diverse genres and deliver a powerful sonic experience.

Flip the record to Side B, aptly named "Blurring Off Into Its Opposite," and the listeners will be transported into an experimental ambient journey. Here, Element skillfully intersects noise and bass, drawing inspiration from Gil Melle's iconic 1971 soundtrack for "The Andromeda Strain." The result is an atmospheric soundscape that captivates the imagination and pushes the boundaries of ambient music.

Both sides of this release truly embody Element's distinctive and original style, showcasing their unparalleled creativity and artistic vision. Prepare to be immersed in the enigmatic world of newdubhall as Element's unique soundscapes unfold.

              STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Poised bass engineering that manages to tip its hat to both grime, dub-techno and dancehall in one tectonic side of a 10" plate. Nice ambient refrain on the flip that can be used to draw out the tension too. Big ting.

              Julian Cope

              Head-On/Repossessed

Julian Cope's highly acclaimed autobiography and its long-awaited sequel in one extraordinary volume. Julian Cope shot to fame with eighties band ‘Teardrop Explodes' during the Punk era. Hailed as a visionary by those people who recognise his genius and a madman by those who find him perplexing, he has become a cult figure in the music world.

Head-On/Repossessed is written in Cope's own inimitable style and follows his journey through a time of incredible change within the music industry. Head-on is the highly acclaimed autobiography that The Observer viewed as “book of the year” when it was first released. Repossesed picks up in 1983 where Head On ends and continues up until 1989.

                Tom Ze

Todos Os Olhos - 2024 Reissue

Special limited gatefold edition on 180g premium vinyl. Tom Ze is considered the most iconic voice of all Tropicalistas - Brazil's artistic movement that arose in the late 1960s. He came from Bahia, but his wry urban poetry, infused with the sounds of the largest metropolis of South America, is pure Sao Paulo.

Five of the songs from this album were in included on Brazil Classics Vol.40 - The Best of Tom Ze, compiled by David Byrne and released on Luaka Bop in 1990. "This was the record that took me out of circulation, explained Tom Zé. "Until then I was played on the radio." However, he admitted that "This album is something so joyful that I've done, that I don't even know how to explain. It was the best thing I've accomplished after years of incomprehensible lack of motivation. I noticed that my heart could stand being unpopular, and this conviction spread comfortably inside me. This record had the faculty of bringing back my internal joy. It has brought back the joy of singing, of making music, of creating, of accomplishing."

                      Chris & Cosey

                      Elemental Seven - 2023 Reissue

Chris & Cosey’s Elemental 7 – available here for the first time in 40 years - is the soundtrack to the film of the same name (on Cabaret Voltaire’s Doublevision video imprint) that saw the duo working once more with John Lacey – Lacey had previously worked with Cosey in COUM Transmissions and introduced Chris Carter to the collective. The album’s highlight and one of their best loved songs, ‘Dancing Ghosts’, sounds as fresh and relevant today as it must have on its original release.

                          Elemente

"Elemente" - album number seven from the third incarnation of the legendary krautronic project Kluster/Cluster springs a surprise with a minor sensation: sequencer lines! Using an array of exclusively analogue instruments, Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Onnen Bock and Armin Metz have recorded eight tracks which, at one and the same time, are intrinsically hypnotic and sublimely beautiful.

Pantha Du Prince & The Bell Laboratory

                            Elements Of Light

Over the course of three albums - and as an in-demand remixer of artists ranging from Animal Collective to, most recently, Philip Glass - the Berlin-based musician and producer Pantha Du Prince (Hendrik Weber) has been celebrated for pushing the envelope of electronic music.

His newest effort, ‘Elements Of Light’, a collaborative project with The Bell Laboratory, is doubtless his most ambitious to date: The work is a symphony for electronics, percussion and bell carillon, a three-tonne instrument comprising 50 bronze bells.

The genesis of the project began in Oslo in the summer of 2010, when Weber was having lunch with local curators Mattis With and Håkon Vinnogg and heard, in the distance, one of the concerts played multiple times daily on a bell carillon inside the city hall. Weber was struck by how the frequencies and overtones unfolded unpredictably, influenced one another, and resonated, more or less, throughout the Norwegian capital.

With and Vinnogg suggested he compose for the carillon, which was developed in China 3,500 years ago, during the Shang Dynasty, and made its way to Europe during the Middle Ages. Weber began collaborating with the Norwegian Lars Petter Hagen, who served as arranger and conductor. For the recording, a bell carillon was shipped from Denmark to Germany, where Vegar Sandholt, the same carillonist that Weber had heard during his stay in Oslo, played it.

A separate session, in Oslo, brought together a variety of percussionists, including Weber; Martin Horntveth of Jaga Jazzist, Killl and The National Bank; Erland Dahlen of Nils Petter Molvaer Trio, Susanne Sundfør, Madrugada, Xploding Plastix, and Kaada; the researcher and performer Håkon Stene, who teaches at the Norwegian Academy Of Music; and Heming Valebjørg, of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. They contributed numerous tubular bells, marimba, xylophone, cymbals, chimes, handclaps, finger snaps and other percussion.

The album is a single continuous work, although it has been broken down into five tracks named for elements of light: ‘Wave’, ‘Particle’, ‘Photon’, ‘Spectral Split’ and ‘Quantum’. Sonically, the work is a fusion of electronic music and classical composition, and draws on house and minimalism, jazz and new music, Gamelan and Western sacred music. Influences include John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Steve Reich, LaMonte Young and Moondog.

‘Elements Of Light’ is a natural next step in the Pantha Du Prince oeuvre. Bells figured prominently on his last album, the highly acclaimed ‘Black Noise’, which Rough Trade released in 2010. In a Best New Music review of ‘Black Noise’, Pitchfork said “each track is its own micro sound world with enough rich detail to draw you back for deeper investigation.”

                              Egotrya

                              Four Elements

Hero of the nu-disco crowd and one of the founding godfathers of Italo Disco, Beppe Loda comes to prominence once again with a brand new album of instrumental synth loveliness under his Egotrya guise.

The album harks back to the heavy influence of 80s prog rock on the cosmic disco scene. Tracks like ‘Landscape’ utilise strong synth motifs and experimental melodic touches, brought into the 21st century with crisp production. Imagine Rustie vs. Vangelis and you’re somewhere close.

‘Typhoon’ is an all-out synth bonanza with chugging basslines and steady disco beats. ‘Volcano’, written and produced with Francesco Boscolo, is a prime slice of Italo glamour that’ll have the nu-disco pups reaching for the stars. ‘Cave’ builds on the glacial sci-fi atmospheres whilst ‘Wind (Stella Vocal)’ drives hard with its mesmerizing groove. ‘Open Air’ provides meditative, crystalline relief before ‘Rare Earth’ propels the album forward with hollowed-out tom patterns and rapid synth switch-ups.

The album comes to a close with the motoric ‘Underwater’, a manic, soaring piece of music paired with the trickling sounds and long modulated synth bows of ‘Water Games’ to finish.

                                Jon Mueller

                                Strung

Table of the Elements continues to celebrate its 15th anniversary with the third installment in its Guitar Series. Peripatetic composer, performer, improviser, and designer Jon Mueller is a busy guy, and both the rock and experimental music scenes are the richer for it. As a drummer he propels the ecstatic whorl of Collections of Colonies of Bees and the occasional guitar army of Rhys Chatham; alternately his solo project, Metals, is the most harrowingly intense percussive barrage you'll ever encounter. He also finds time to collaborate with artists ranging from Wilco's Glenn Kotche to Swans' Jarboe. Whether it's minimalist bombast, free-improv interplay, or electroacoustic finesse, Mueller's got it covered. But what can he do with a guitar? In "Strung", Mueller doesn't play the guitar; he scrambles its molecules. Laying down a photon-blast of sound, he initiates a relentless, rapid-pulse attack signal that summons wave upon wave of white noise. Think inexorable alien invasion – The Day the Earth Stood Still, with Lou Reed as Klaatu and "Metal Machine Music" as the message. Earth doesn't stand a chance.

                                  Alan Neilson

                                  The Birthday EP

Debut EP from this singer songwriter from Dudley. The first two tracks, "Wish You Were Her" and "Birthday" are beautifully simple, melancholic songs featuring just acoustic guitar and Alan's powerful emotive vocals. "Moses & Abe" takes a different direction altogether with cut-ups, samples and skitish electronics.

                                    The Somatics

                                    Elemental

"Elemental", with its invigorating guitar-lines, lush harmonies and an epic, cascading chorus, is a piece of psychedelic indie genius. Recorded and produced at their own studio 'The Attic' on the outskirts of Leeds, the band have used vintage equipment in an attempt to rediscover the classic analogue sounds of their heroes such as Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and King Crimson. On even the first listen, it is clear that their perfectionist attitude in the studio has paid off!
