STRICTLY RHYTHM

Reality Check is a one-off project from Freddy Turner & Jason Hernandez. They dropped this soulful yet street-ready slice of house on Strictly Rhythm in 1998. This is one of those hidden gems, tucked away in the recesses of the Strictly catalogue, so it may well have slipped by under the radar save for a few dedicated heads and club junkies. It's got that NYC sound sorted: hard drums, vocal samples, tripped out stabs and that all important synth sax riffing manically. Perfect DJ material if you're into the funked up n stripped back late 90s sound. "Fantasy" has been given some tasty 2017 remastering treatment and repressed onto a high quality, weighty 12" for all you fiends out there. It comes like it did back in '98 - with three very contrasting mixes, intended for three different club moods entirely. Most excellent!

Well, where do you start with "Deep Inside"? Originally released in the golden NYC House era of 1993, this 5 tracker literally smashed everything in sight. And still does now! The epitome of an evergreen, all-time classic release. Masters At Work Louie Vega and Kenny Dope were on a major roll in this era, producing, remixing, dj-ing and creating this fucking bomb. For this EP the legendary duo are joined by an insane roll-call of collaborators - Erick Morillo engineering the title track? Check. Maurice Joshua on co-production duties? You got it. Vocals by Ms. Barbara tucker? Present and correct. Killer, rock hard drums? Stacks of Soul? Masterfully chopped up Disco samples? All present. Serious stuff. Sometimes a record just manages to capture and distill the true essence of what this is all about and 'Deep Inside' is one such record, bearing all the hallmarks of golden era MAW and a true reflection of what was happening in New York's clubs at that time. You know a record is good when it's still being, quite literally, hammered nearly 25 years later! Now, remastered and reissued with the full involvement of Strictly Rhythm this seminal piece of NYC House history is made available again with all original, full sleeve artwork intact as per the 1993 original. This one's a straight up essential for any self-respecting dance aficionado. You know what to do!

Patrick says: Absolutely massive house record here, rightly caned by every DJ ever! If you don't own a copy, and it's been out of press for a while now, pick up a mint condition reissue of this floor-flaying NY bomb!

Absolutely seminal house music from NYC's Logic crew which counts Wayne Gardiner and Roger Sanchez amongst its ranks. Real deal 1990 deepness for you lucky lucky people! Amazing that this record still stands up some 26+ years later and still kicks it today. The production is utterly flawless and the overall vibe of the whole record, though hard to pin down, is the perfect balance of tough drums and melodic orchestration matched with some of the deepest pads and synths out there. It even tips its hat to Mr. Fingers on 'The Final Frontier' which pulls of a brilliantly re-vamp of his killer "Can You Feel It"-organ line. A benchmark record, released early on in Strictly Rhythm's existence and helping shape the sound of the label as a whole. The fact that it's still a record that gets regular spin and continues to influence today in 2017 speaks volumes about the music and label's legacy. 'The Warning / The Final Frontier' has been skillfully remastered from all original master sources and fully licensed and reissued officially for 2017.

Another cornerstone record from the mighty Strictly Rhythm catalogue, 'Waterfalls / Feel it' is an essential example of the deeper, more melodic style of house that emanated from NYC / NJ in the early to mid 90's. Originally released in 1991 the EP features the production style of Andrew 'Rags' Richardson with some co-production assistance from one Roger Sanchez. It perfectly encapsulates the style of music that would be played at clubs like the Loft, Shelter, Zanzibar and beyond, a more emotive and soulful strain of house that gives a respectful nod to its disco roots. 'Waterfalls / Feel it' has long been the toast of house aficionado's and is most definitely a record that will still have people rushing the booth asking 'what's this?!'. An evergreen slab of wax indeed. Essential sounds for the heads. 'Waterfalls / Feel it' has been skillfully remastered from all original master sources and fully licensed and reissued officially for 2017.

Matt says: Another e-e-e-e-essential selection from the Strictly vaults to land this week. It's a big week for the seminal house label with some of its best bits getting the re-ish treatment.

In the early / mid 90s 'Little' Louie Vega and Kenny 'Dope' Gonzalez' Masters At Work musical career was heavily intertwined with the rise of NY garage / house label Strictly Rhythm, the pair appearing as themselves or under various pseudonyms on stacks of releases from the imprint. Now the duo get to relive some of those moments, taking a CD each to mix up some of the best bits from the extensive SR vaults. From artists such as Barbara Tucker, Erick Morillo, Aly-Us, Logic and Underground Solutions, as well as plenty of their own productions, this is the sound of hands-aloft main room mayhem from back in the day.
