Unsummering

    R. Missing is the enigmatic music project of New York based vocalist Sharon Shy and musician Toppy.previously known as The Ropes. Unsummering, the first release under their new moniker R. Missing, expands on The Ropes' previous palette of Morrissey tinged lyrics and darkwave, but manages to be even more isolated lyrically than their famously nihilistic previous work, fully embracing complete detachment. Musically, fraught guitar and synth textures paint an image of an unstable world, held together only by tightly quantized electronic drum beats.

        Talk Show

        Effigy

If Talk Show’s exhilarating full-length debut, Effigy, feels more like a film than an album, that’s no coincidence. The band crafted the collection to soundtrack a fictional nightclub. “One of the biggest influences on this record was the intro to the movie Blade, where this character’s being dragged through a meatpacking plant and into the vampire rave,” says frontman Harrison Swann. “There’s so much tension and anticipation and intimidation in that scene. We wanted to create the kind of music we’d play if we were performing in that club, to put ourselves into that scene and see how far we could push it.” With Effigy, Talk Show do more than just push their sound; they completely reinvent it. Produced by Remi Kabaka Jr., of Gorillaz, the record offers up a bold and exhilarating showcase for the band’s dramatic evolution, drawing on everything from The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy to Nine Inch Nails and The KLF as it taps into a raw, primal sound at the intersection of techno, electronic, industrial, and rock music. The songs are dark and gritty, fueled by blistering guitars and explosive drums, and Swann’s vocals are nothing short of hypnotic, leaning on repetition and restraint to reach for transcendence in the midst of swirling sonic chaos. The result is an immersive, multi-sensory experience, one that conjures up a dark, sweaty warehouse packed with moving bodies all radiating heat and desire, anxiety and release, ecstasy and desperation

Manchester four-piece Umarells release their debut 7” “You’re Not Here / Closer” on 03 November 2023 via Fear of Missing Out Records. Named after the Italian word for retired men who watch construction sites, Umarells channel the blissed-out shoegaze of Beach House; the hushed vocal deliveries of Crumb and the analogue warmth of Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

            Duvet

            Girlcow / Sweaty Dog

Fast rising Manchester band Duvet release their debut 7” single ‘Girlcow / Sweaty Dog’ via Fear of Missing Out Records on 06 October 2023. Coming together in early 2022, the band's jagged post-punk tales conjure sleazy cowboys and grotty indie discos in northern England. Lead-single ‘Girlcow’ is written from the perspective of “a pervy cowboy” and is full of noisy grunge and the band's uninhibited sense of humour. Duvet have already supported the likes of Warmduscher, English Teacher, Opus Kink and played Manchester Psych Festival.

                The Missing Brazilians

                Warzone - 2022 Reissue

Another science fiction dancehall classic. Originally released in 1984, this is one of the most envelope- pushing records on the On-U Sound label: a rhythmic collision of noise, dub and electronics. Adrian Sherwood pushed the possibilities of the studio to the limit, capturing dystopian mid-80s cold war menace with layers of spatially- disorientating percussion, alien keyboard sounds and teeth-rattling distortion. Features vocal contributions from Shara Nelson (Massive Attack) and Annie Anxiety (Crass Records). Re-cut at Dubplates and Mastering in Berlin for maximum bass pressure. Includes a fold-out poster insert and download card which contains the full album plus a previously unreleased extended mix of 'Ace Of Wands', their contribution to the classic first volume of the long running 'Pay It All Back' series.

                  Maria BC

                  Hyaline

‘Hyaline’ is the debut album from Ohio-born, Oakland, CAbased artist and songwriter, Maria BC. Following last year’s debut EP, ‘Devil’s Rain’, which received critical praise from Pitchfork, BBC Radio 6 Music, KEXP and more, Maria recorded ‘Hyaline’ across their untreated Brooklyn apartment in Summer 2021, like a wandering spirit gaining energy from different spaces. Their classically trained mezzosoprano voice soars over raw, ethereal guitars; audio samples from Prospect Park - now almost unrecognizable - settle alongside tender, transformative harmonies.

Mixing together different sessions, tracks recorded directly into their phone and samples collected over the years, Maria BC likens ‘Hyaline’ to a ‘sonic collage’. It’s a project of patience and trusting the process.

‘Hyaline’, the album title, describes something that is clear and translucent like glass, especially a smooth sea. For Maria, songwriting is a stretched blank canvas awaiting the strokes of an exhale, and it’s this slow-moving process that rewards us the ease of a crystalline sky, without forgetting the clouds that may have come before it.

A knife's-edge balance of intimacy and ambiguity, ‘Hyaline’ accesses snapshots of grief, anxiety and wonder through a miscellany of spectres: these are ghost stories, but not as we know them.

                    The Fall

Are You Missing Winner - Reissue

Are You Are Missing Winner is the twenty-second album by British post-punk band the Fall, released in November 2001. Since the band’s last record Mark E Smith had replaced the entire line up. The album was recorded very quickly and very much on the cheap and band member Ben Pritchard described it as a very miserable experience. The influence of Rockabilly is very much seen throughout the album and saw them covering Lead Belly's ‘The Bourgeois Blues’.

As with the other Fall reissues these have notes by Fall guru Daryl Easlea and have been mastered by long time engineer Andy Pearce.

This is the latest release in Cherry Red’s series of deluxe Fall reissues – “Fall Sound Archive”

                      Takayuki Shiraishi

                      Missing Link

In the short time since Mule Musiq turned their attention towards the exquisite archival gems of their native Japan, the Studio Mule offshoot has explored modal, free and funky jazz (Mitsaki Katayama, Eiji Nakayama, Doctor Umezu Diva) and Balearic bossa (Atlas) through a string of high quality reissues. Here they dive headlong into the otherworldly electronics of Japan's new wave scene, specifically the crazed musical mind of BGM founder Takayuki Shirashi. Since its release in 1980 on Vanity Records, the one and only BGM LP "Back Ground Music" has become one of the most sought after gems from this fertile era of the Japanese underground, and Shirashi's later work as Arc, MLD and Planetoid is held in equal regard.

Archival rather than a reissue, "Missing Link" is a collection of unreleased recordings from the late 80s and sees Shirashi enjoying complete creative freedom, cooly switching between dark new wave grooves, motorik rhythms, screeching post punk guitars and blasts of wild experimental electronics. To try and explain the deep diversity we're dealing with, "Eardrum" reframes jazz tonalities in an electronic context, "Down The Stairs" is a classic synth funk groove a la Material and "Dark Sea" drifts through the cosmos with contemplative electronics - and that's only the first three tracks. If you're a fan of Japanese new wave, cosmic electronics or general weirdshit, you'll be all over this.

                        STAFF COMMENTS

Patrick says: Ahead of their reissue of the majestic "Back Ground Music" LP, Studio Mule take an archival journey through founder member Takayuki Shiraishi's unreleased work from the late 80s. Pulling from krautrock, new wave, post punk and experimental electronics, the Japanese legend lays out 13 tracks of weird, whacked out and wonderful synth jams, each excellent in its own psychedelic way.

                        Basement Revolver

                        Heavy Eyes

Heavy Eyes is the debut album from Canadian indie-rock trio Basement Revolver. There’s an air of weariness pervading the album, with the sleepy title Heavy Eyes summing up a general exhaustion right down to the bone, as well as hinting at a heavier direction as they deftly merge 90s infused indie rock with fuzzy dreamy pop and poignant, yearning lyrics. Unable to disguise the emotion in her voice, songwriter Chrisy Hurn shares intimate stories and personal wounds from her past, revealing a deeply affecting and rewarding set of songs.

Bringing together the talents of Chrisy Hurn (vocals, guitar), Nimal Agalawatte (bass, synth) and Brandon Munro (drums), the band hail from Hamilton, Ontario and were named Basement Revolver due to Chrisy’s basement apartment, rather than any trigger happy leanings. Their ascent to the spotlight has been a steady trajectory, capitalising on the success of their debut single “Johnny” in 2016. The track garnered endorsements from DIY Magazine and Exclaim! as well as respected tastemakers Gold Flake Paint, who hailed it a “‘favourite song of the year” contender. They had stumbled across a sound that is capable of stripping listeners of inhibition, yet heavy hitting enough to leave a lasting impression.

On the back of “Johnny”, they were signed by Memphis Industries’ UK sub-label fear of missing out records, who released their debut self-titled EP in 2016 with “Johnny” and their second single “Words” reaching the higher echelon of the Hype Machine chart and the EP flagged up in several end of year lists. They followed this up with the Agatha EP in 2017 where the single “Bread & Wine” reached the B-list on Radio BBC 6 Music and also garnered support from John Kennedy at Radio X. The band have racked up over one million plays on Spotify across the two EPs.

In a relatively short time, Basement Revolver have successfully encapsulated the yearning and hopefulness of their generation, whilst harnessing a unique, yet familiar soundscape.

                          Wire

                          Chairs Missing

Wire’s first three albums need no introduction. They are the three classic albums on which Wire’s reputation is based. Moreover, they are the recordings that minted the post-punk form. This was adopted by other bands, but Wire were there first. These are the definitive re-releases. Each album is presented as an 80-page hardback book – the size of a 7-inch, but obviously much thicker. After a special introduction by Jon Savage, Graham Duff provides insight into each track. These texts include recording details, brand-new interviews with band members, and lyrics.

This stunning set of presentations also includes a range of images from the archive of Annette Green. Wire’s official photographer during this period, Green also shot the covers for Pink Flag and Chairs Missing. Promotional and informal imagery – in colour and black and white – is featured throughout the books. Most of the photographs have not been seen for 40 years – and many have never been published anywhere before.

With "Pink Flag" Wire tapped happily into punk's energy and iconoclastic tendencies, "Chairs Missing" is, perhaps, a little truer to their own instincts. They didnt completely shed the past completely; the joyful "Sand In My Joints" and grinding "Mercy" have more than a hint of "Pink Flag" about them, but their 1978 offering is moodier and much more textured than its predecessor, the addition of swathes of electronic sounds moving them firmly into post punk territory, a genre they helped to spawn. There is pure pop beauty on here too, of which "Outdoor Miner"  and "French Film Blurred" being the most gorgeous examples.

                            STAFF COMMENTS

Martin says: Their most varied L.P. and possibly their finest hour (or so). Straddling the fire of punk and the colder, darker charms of brooding electronic post punk, it also contains within its grooves moments of melodic magic. Worth buying for the outrageously amazing "Outdoor Miner" on its own.

                            The Cairo Gang

                            Goes Missing

Playing with other artists over the years, Emmett Kelly has exhibited an encompassing approach to music which lends flexibility to The Cairo Gang’s song-style. He’s a harmony singer of supreme skill, bringing not only a sweet and supple voice but also a tremendous sympathy to the singing of it (as anyone who’s caught Cairo onstage with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy will ever know). Now a couple of albums and tapes and singles and things into it he’s making streamlined music for the ears, constructing with a heavy hand in order to have a heavy impact with more than just sounds but songs and beaming them in on bright bolts of sunshine.

‘Gone Missing’ isn’t just an awesome, awesome-sounding record of guitar pop that rocks, of songs sweetly hung with candified hooks; also it’s a new report from the side of the road. The Cairo Gang have made tracks and travelled distances from their former states of mind, their former hooded selves.

The Cairo Gang have found themselves - their most perfect alignment to date, taking a more intuitive path to the song, letting go of the sense of design, letting it write itself, as it will in the right hands.

‘Gone Missing’ was written in between places, on the run, recorded in a variety of rooms. Lines appear to have been straightened - yet still, blood beats sidewise inside Cairo’s temples, their rebel heart is drunk on the outskirts of town. The impulse to dig underneath the bittersweet heart, to invert meaning, shapes the songs of ‘Goes Missing’.
