Binker Golding

Abstractions Of Reality Past And Incredible Feathers

Binker Golding is a musician of many talents - one half of London trailblazers Binker and Moses, skilled composer, educator at Tomorrow’s Warriors, frequent collaborator with top musicians from the London jazz scene one of the most impactful saxophonists of our times. His new album "Abstractions of Reality Past and Incredible Feathers" was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, mixed by the legendary James Farber (Michael Brecker, Joe Lovano, Brad Mehldau), and mastered and cut at Gearbox Records. The record features a distinctive quartet with Joe Armon-Jones on piano, Daniel Casimir on double bass, and Sam Jones on drums Golding’s quartet project promises to make waves as it maps a path between the more through-composed jazz fusion of previous decades and the hip hop/broken beat-influenced sound of the contemporary London jazz scene.

Abdullah Ibrahim

The Balance

'People don't like Abdullah Ibrahim, they adore him, bestowing on him the devotion normally reserved for Nina Simone. When he plays, melodies tumble out effortlessly, as he slides from theme to theme like a laid-back South African reincarnation of Thelonious Monk.' The Guardian.

Abdullah Ibrahim (who has also recorded as Dollar Brand) is one of South Africa's most famous musicians. His music is often referred to as representing freedom.

His major anti-apartheid anthem "Mannenberg" (released as "Capetown Fringe" in the US) has come to be regarded as an unofficial national anthem in South Africa. He even performed at Nelson Mandela's inauguration, where Mandela referred to him as 'our Mozart'.

He's played with everyone from Duke Ellington to Max Roach, John Coltrane to Ornette Coleman, and is the father of underground rapper Jean Grae.

Encompassing Township-Jazz, solo piano, Highlife and plentiful modern jazz styles, this brand new studio album (recorded with his band Ekaya at RAK Studios in London,) is a major return for a genuine living jazz legend.

The godfather of the LA sound, and possibly the World’s greatest living Jazz Vocalist, returns with his masterpiece. Timeless, yet made for our times - this is a double album of spiritual jazz, soul, gospel, and psychedelic rock. Recorded at LA’s Sunset Sound, and backed by a band of legendary musicians (including Kamasi Washington), this is a work of true beauty. A tour de force that reveals Dwight’s kinship with Spiritualism

One year on from their highly praised mega-work ‘Journey To The Mountain Of Forever’ (Mojo Magazine Urban Album Of The Year), Binker And Moses return with a blistering assault on the senses.

Their third album in as many years, Binker Golding and Moses Boyd are trailblazers in arguably the most exciting jazz explosion London has ever witnessed.

Is it a studio recording? Is it a live recording? Does it matter when the music’s this good?

10 new tracks featuring a giant wealth of talent alongside Binker and Moses themselves (including UK free legend Evan Parker and one half of Yussef Kamaal), this album captures a momentous 45 minutes when spontaneity and composition combine to magical effect.

It’s a companion piece to ‘Journey’ but with a different energy - as North London is to South London, as West is to East.

STAFF COMMENTS

Millie says: If you thought you were lacking some jazz in your life, get on this. From the London jazz scene Binker and Moses are loud and explosive, filled to the brim with energy; the dynamic duo are killing it.

Applewood Road is singer-songwriters Emily Barker, Amber Rubarth and Amy Speace, who first met in Nashville in September 2014 where they wrote and recorded the song entitled “Applewood Road”. Six months later they reconvened to write twelve more songs and turn this exciting new collaboration into a full album project. Applewood Road’s soaring three part vocal harmonies have just the right degree of edge and precision while their finely crafted songs reflect deeply on their personal experiences and illustrate their special gifts for storytelling. Each song was recorded live to stereo tape, Emily, Amber and Amy singing together around one microphone with minimal accompaniment - the whole concept going right back to the beginning of recorded music. The tape was then mastered and cut for vinyl at Gearbox Records in London, keeping the 100% analogue chain throughout the whole process.
