Mark Guiliana

BEAT MUSIC 2.0

Widely regarded as one of the most influential rhythmic artists of his generation, Mark Guiliana - whose creative mark can be heard alongside David Bowie, St Vincent and Brad Mehldau - presents the latest album from a project that first took shape in 2019.

Featuring Nicholas Semrad (The Killers), Stu Brooks (Danny Elfman), Tim Lefebvre (David Bowie) and Gretchen Parlato , this new hard- hitting, synth-fuelled and hookdriven album distils Guiliana's vision into eight concise, groove-driven pieces built on movement and momentum.

Each track takes its title from a four-letter word - direct, immediate and impossible to overcomplicate.Transmitted through an 8- bit visual universe created by bassist Stu Brooks specifically for the album, 'BEAT MUSIC 2.0' draws on the language of early gaming culture - pixel characters, simple commands and instant reactions. The imagery appears digital and mechanical. The music is anything but. Every note is performed, composed and shaped through collaboration, capturing the energy, precision and personality that define Guiliana's approach.

In an age increasingly shaped by automation, 'BEAT MUSIC 2.0' keeps its focus on people, pulse and movement.

Richard Spaven

Light Of Day

'Light of Day' is the new album from Richard Spaven, one of the defining rhythmic voices of the past two decades, shaping the space where jazz, hip hop, club culture and drum and bass meet.

His technical fluency and electronic sensibility place groove at the centre of his language, allowing him to control density, space and pulse with clarity. Across work with Loyle Carner, Jordan Rakei, Petter Eldh and Alfa Mist, his playing remains recognisable - elastic, deliberate and grounded in feel.

Released on Edition Records, the album marks a new chapter with Spaven stepping forward as a bandleader and composer with a clear focus. The music is built from the inside out - groove shaping harmony, texture shaping form. Studio and live performances follow the same intent: direct, physical, locked into the pocket. The result is controlled intensity, where technique serves expression, and the music moves freely across genres without losing its centre of gravity.

Joe Webb

Neath Beat

'Neath Beat' is the new album from pianist Joe Webb, following the acclaimed and Mercury Prize-shortlisted 'Hamstrings & Hurricanes'.

Arriving at a defining point in his rapidly rising career, Webb delivers the next chapter with the momentum of a musician whose audience and reputation are expanding quickly. National television appearances on Later... with Jools Holland and the Jools' Annual Hootenanny introduced his explosive piano style to millions, while collaborations with RAYE and performances alongside Wynton Marsalis mark Joe Webb as one of the most compelling emerging voices in British jazz.

At the centre of 'Neath Beat' is Webb's distinctive piano language - the rhythmic drive of stride, the melodic instinct of Britpop, and the storytelling shaped by the music he absorbed growing up in South Wales. His trio playing carries the lineage of pianists such as Oscar Peterson and Duke Ellington, channelled through the songwriting culture of bands like Oasis.

The result is music that feels urgent, melodic and unmistakably personal - a pianist pushing forward with imagination, clarity and the confidence of an artist whose story is gaining real momentum.

Frida Touray

Homebody

Following her compelling debut EP 'Mending', Frida Touray returns with 'Homebody', a work of raw emotional clarity, crafted during a time when her voice was literally fighting back.

Diagnosed mid-process with a rare condition that forced her into silence and stillness, Touray chose not retreat, but rebuild. From the quiet corners of domestic life, she's shaped a collection of songs that radiate warmth, vulnerability and quiet endurance.

Musically, 'Homebody' expands on Touray's jazz- soul foundations with sparse, atmospheric production that amplifies her voice and message. There's a newfound looseness in her phrasing, a deeper sense of presence in every word she sings. You can hear the letting go, of perfection, of control, and the deepening of purpose in its place. Each track lands with unfiltered intimacy and emotional architecture, a subtle act of defiance wrapped in softness.

Joe Webb

Hamstrings & Hurricanes

Following the release of the acclaimed EPs 'Collblanc' and 'SET' during early 2024, Joe Webb releases his much-anticipated full-length album 'Hamstrings & Hurricanes', which has been shortlisted for the 2025 Mercury Music Prize. The album features the formidable talents of Will Sach on bass and Sam Jesson on drums.

Joe Webb is an extraordinarily gifted pianist and improviser who, taking inspiration from the flavour of 90's Brit- pop and adding references to his Welsh cultural roots, seamlessly blends traditional jazz with contemporary flair. His innovative approach breathes new life into classic jazz idioms, creating a sound that is both familiar and refreshingly original. The Joe Webb Trio's ability to amalgamate the old and the new has garnered them a deserved reputation for pushing the boundaries of jazz while respecting its rich heritage.

Gilles Peterson & Lionel Louke

HH Reimagined

Gilles Peterson re-imagines Lionel Loueke’s incredible and acclaimed album HH, released in 2020, featuring the music of his long-term mentor, the legendary Herbie Hancock, for release in 2022. Gilles Peterson and Lionel Loueke have long term respect for each other's music and when an opportunity to collaborate together came about, both jumped at the chance. The result is a brilliantly chaotic clash of worldwide club rhythms and guitar loops. The connection is the master Herbie Hancock - a massive influence on the London based DJ and the Beninese guitarist. Performing the music of his mentor HH, released on Edition Records in Sept 2020, was a pivotal album in Loueke's already fascinating journey from humble roots to illustrious career. Reimagined, refocused and reinvented by Gilles and co-producer Alex Patchwork (Ninja Tune) with parts re-recorded by Lionel, this is a kaleidoscopic view of HH which realises the full range of colours inherent within it.

STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Pummelling percussive drums and skittering dubby rhythms punctuate the jazzy disco breaks and soulful vocal shards, ending up as a startlingly coherent and wonderfully varied journey, rich with organic instrumentation but undeniably electronic.
