The aptly named Cinematic Orchestra (TCO) were formed by J. Swinscoe back in 1999. Swinscoe arrived at London with a background playing bass and guitar in bands and DJing, as well as a head full of ideas and influences, such as his love of jazz bass players, rhythm sections and film soundtracks. Several albums and a decade later The Cinematic Orchestra are still going strong, with their recent "Ma Fleur" session the best yet. Now the "Late Night Tales" series gives Swinscoe a chance to bring together some of his influences, home-listening favourites and inspirations on this fine 18 track CD / LP. The likes of soul-jazz singers and players such as Eddie Gale, Terry Callier, and Wayne Henderson might be expected, but how about Flying Lotus, Thom Yorke, Steve Reich and Burial? The selection features a wonderful mix of old and new, covering everything from dubstep to minimalism, soul to easy listening, folk to breaks, plus we get an exclusive Cinematic Orchestra cover version featuring Fontella Bass.

Late Night Tales - Air

Air are the latest in a long line of acclaimed artists to share their personal music collection with the world in the form of Azuli's album series 'Late Night Tales'. Given 75 minutes of CD to fill, it's self evident that The Song is paramount. Thus fellow countryman Sebastien Tellier makes a deserved appearance, alongside artists like Lee Hazelwood, Scott Walker, The Troggs, Minnie Riperton, Robert Wyatt, Japan, Cat Power, Tan Dun and George Delerue, as well as Air's collaboration with writer Alessandro Baricco "Musica".

CD Info: The booklet includes details of why the duo picked each track.

Another Late Night - Zero 7

My fave downbeat duo pick out some gems for late night (or perhaps Sunday afternoon) listening. There's soul (Stylistics, Leroy Hutson, Sylvia Striplin, Don Blackman) hip hop (Quasimoto, Souls Of Mischief, Slum Village and the rare 7" dub mix of Roots Manuva's "Witness") nu Latin (Da Lata and Beedle's mix of Shawn Lee) and even indie (Jim O'Rourke). Brilliant.
