The Spook School

Like A Heartbeat

Formed in 2011, The Spook School carved out a reputation as one of the most beloved queer acts of their generation. Nominated for Scottish Album of The Year in 2018 with their third and final studio album Could It Be Different? on Alcopop! Records, it was an internationally acclaimed release that was packed with hope and good will, passionately championing LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity years ahead of the public discourse.

Following their final farewell tour and subsequent split in August/September 2019, The Spook School staged their own disappearance to the moon, remaining otherwise inactive, save for a sold-out duo of December 2023 reunion shows celebrating the 10th anniversary of their Fortuna POP! debut album Dress Up.

Now, with the political climate growing ever more hostile and LGBTQ+ rights under threat around the world once more, the time is ripe for The Spook School’s return with new album Like A Heartbeat; the heroes we deserve, carrying a message of resilience, solidarity, and—vitally—hope for the future.

“Unfortunately our songs seem more relevant than ever.” laments Nye. “We kind of hoped our old material would become culturally outdated, but we still feel we have something so important to say, especially as things seem to be getting so much worse. Something particularly infuriating about the last few years is the never-ending torrent of conversations and decisions about trans people's right to exist which take place without any trans people actually having a voice. Sometimes the level of ignorance is so extreme that it would almost be funny if it wasn’t being used as the basis to try and kick us out of society, but when it’s judges, or politicians, or employers that are choosing to get all of their ‘facts’ from anti-trans hate groups it’s not funny—it’s dangerous and negligent.”

Recorded with Rod Jones of Scottish rock titans Idlewild at his Post Electric Studio in Leith, Edinburgh, new album Like A Heartbeat is undeniably The Spook School’s most fully realised, cohesive, and sonically refined record to date. This is a timely, vital return.

Could It Be Different?

If a debut LP is an artist’s introduction to the world and their sophomore release is their now-or-never moment, their third is their most cathartic: they’ve made it out, they’re here.

Glasgow, Scotland’s indiepop optimists The Spook School, despite personal and political obstacle, made it out, and their latest full-length Could It Be Different? is here. It’s been a journey of self-discovery and feel-good realism; modern, dance-friendly indiepop fueling the fun. They made a name for themselves for their exultant and empowering pop, and now, they’ve shown real growth in nuance. Even at their most beaten down, The Spook School manage to find hope free of naivety. That’s clear the second the album opens with “Still Alive,” and its ascending chorus (and soon-to- be crowd favorite) of “Fuck You, I’m Still Alive,” written by Nye after surviving an emotionally abusive relationship. The song avoids villainizing the past, instead, it celebrates the present and welcomes the unknown future.

The energy of working through the wicked exists all over Could It Be Different? “Bad Year” makes personal connections with universal ennui, the debilitating feeling of an atrocious political climate and the desire to do better. Could It Be Different? is a human release a record full of the insecurities and anxiety that arrive after self-awareness, in learning something new and potentially frightening about yourself. But at it’s heart is joy there’s no desolation on the LP, because The Spook School manage to find light in moments of darkness. All things glum must pass even if hope comes only in the form of acceptance.

“A theatrical indie pop band that embrace’s life’s misinterpretations and messiness...their noise-pop jams remain as joyful as ever” - Pitchfork “The Spook School are that rare and beautiful thing: a band with something to say.” - The Guardian

“Societal norms and gender stereotypes are in the crosshairs of these threadbare tunes...trans love songs that hit home no matter your orientation.” - NPR

“Dance music for introverts, love songs for people who are too shy to be in love” - Stereogum
