Heavy Salad’s Cult Casual is set for release this September 25th through Dipped In Gold Recordings and was recorded by producers Christophe Bride at Oxygene Studio in Manchester and with Ross Orton at McCall Sound in Sheffield. Christophe, known for this work with Spear of Destiny and Theatre of Hate has recently been busy producing the forthcoming ACR album ‘ACR Loco’ forthcoming on Mute Records and Ross, known for his work with Arctic Monkeys and Amyl & The Sniffers has recently produced the forthcoming album by Working Men’s Club on Heavenly Recordings.

The LP was written by Heavy Salad at their base in East Manchester by the core trio of Lee Mann (live bassist with The Moonlandingz), Rob Glennie and Allan Hutchison. The band are joined by live backing singers ‘The Priestesses’ and Oscar Remers. The band bonded over a joint interest in psychedelic horror films with Panos Cosmatos’ cult classic Mandy being a particular favourite, Heavy Salad loved the idea of the band being a psychedelic cult albeit a cult with no rules, hence Cult Casual! The album explores the idea of finding your own reality via hallucinogenic nights plagued with polar bears and conversations with the AI in your phone to imagining after death experiences and apocalyptic visions of the future. Heavy Salad share a love of melody and the sound of the album was influenced by their love of psych pop and acid rock. No distortion pedals were used in the making of Cult Casual.

Ashley says: With more hooks than a cenobite's fishing bag, this 7-strong casual cult come with the acid-drenched endless summer sound to get your fingers snapping and your brain melting. 100% fun psychey powerpop with general themes of transcending reality, multi-dimensional mind travel and the spirit of the eternal cosmic party. I'll have another cup of that kool-aid please waiter!

        Salad Boys

        This Is Glue

New Zealand’s Salad Boys are back with “This Is Glue”, the follow up to their critically acclaimed 2015 debut album “Metalmania”. Recorded once again by bandleader/guitarist Joe Sampson at his home studio, “This Is Glue”s twelve songs dig deeper, with sharper hooks embedded deep within a more mature musicality. This Is Glue” hones Sampson’s songwriting chops to a razor edge, with many of the album’s songs sounding utterly timeless. The ri¬s and melodies seem all too familiar, perhaps recalling greats that came before them (The Chills, R.E.M., The Bats), but Sampson has a voice all his own and “This Is Glue”s tunes tread upon a singular path of measured melancholy.

The themes are darker, the lyrics more claustrophobic and yearning with Sampson confronting anxiety, mortality, and fear through the his abstract lyrical lens; a cracked world view, to be sure. Songs like “Exaltation”, “Dogged Out” and “Divided” convey a world-weariness of a man twice his age. That’s not to say that “This Is Glue” is all doom and gloom; album opener “Blown Up” kickstarts with motoric drumming that crescendos into a thrilling guitar ri¬ that could crack mountains. “Psych Slasher” crashes forward frenetically awash in phaser before easing into a melodic denouement buoyed by a bubbling synthesizer before a tidal wave of guitar crashes down again. Existential angst has never felt so exhilarating.

'Salad Days', is the follow up to 2012's lauded 'Mac DeMarco 2' which saw the Edmonton local propelled into the limelight. Written and recorded around a relentless tour schedule (which picked up all over again as soon as the LP was done), 'Salad Days' gives the listener a very personal insight into what it's all about to be Mac amidst the craziness of a rising career in a very public format.

The lead single, "Passing Out Pieces," set to huge overdriven organ chords, contains lines like "..never been reluctant to share, passing out pieces of me.." Clearly, this isn't the same record that breezily gave us "Dreamin," and "Ode to Viceroy" but the result of what comes from their success. "Chamber of Reflection," a track featuring icy synth stabs and soulful crooning, wouldn't be out of place on a fantasy Shuggie Otis and Prince collaboration. Standout tracks like these show Mac's widening sound, whether insights into future directions or even just welcome one-off forays into new territory.

Still, this is musically, lyrically and melodically good old Mac DeMarco, through and through. The same crisp John Lennon/Phil Spector era homegrown lush production that could have walked out of Geoff Emerick's mixing board in 1972, but with that peculiar Mac touch that's completely of right now.

          STAFF COMMENTS

Ryan says: Having set the tone with his second album ‘2’ back in 2012 with an ode to cheap cigarettes and song after song of whimsical ambivalence, Mac Demarco offers up some fresh delights for us to sink our teeth into. This time there’s a few darker moments from the haunting synthpop masterpiece “Chamber Of Reflection” to a frosty “Passing Out Pieces” revealing the toll touring the world has taken on him. When Demarco isn’t passing out pieces he takes the time to dish out some of his best gap-toothed advice yet with “Let Her Go” and “Treat Her Better” topping it all off with his usual brand of crooning vocals, languid guitars and those ridiculously funky basslines, a definite step up from the last album. Mac takes things a little (only a tiny bit) more seriously this time and pulls off his best record yet!
