    Crooked Fingers

    Swet Deth

One afternoon, Eric Bachmann’s son returned from school with a sheath of pictures he’d drawn, all of them macabre. “There were crows and sinister figures with scythes and tombstones,” he recalls. On one, he had written ‘DETH, SWET DETH,’ and everything clicked in my head.” 'Swet Deth', Bachmann’s first album under his Crooked Fingers moniker after a 15-year hiatus, organized itself around the image: its songs are about death, yes, but there’s a sweetness to them, a wry sensibility to his lyrics that comes from having experienced many kinds of death and the life that follows in its wake.

Crooked Fingers is a historically slippery concept — no two albums sound alike or feature the same lineup in studio or on tour. Hearing parts in these songs that called for instruments he didn’t play or vocals that weren’t in his register, he found himself expanding the roster of guest musicians further than he had on any album in his catalog, including Sharon Van Etten ('Haunted'), The National’s Matt Berninger ('From All Ways'), and Superchunk’s Mac McCaughan ('Cold Waves'). But first he started with family, friends, and frequent collaborators. Jon Rauhouse plays pedal steel. Bachmann’s wife, Liz Durrett, contributes vocals, as do members of his touring band, Skylar Gudasz and Avery Leigh Draut (of Night Palace).

There is a freedom to this collection of songs, a groove to them that would belie their agonies and anxieties were mere death the album’s point and not what comes before. For Eric Bachmann, that has been growth, as a musician and as a man. Like the tree sprouting from the graveyard on its cover, 'Swet Deth' is surprising and lush, a shock of color against its morbid landscape, proof of life in the shadow of its opposite. “RIP Eric Bachmann,” one tombstone reads. As Crooked Fingers, he’s never felt more alive.

'All Cats Are Cute' is an instrumental funk/lofi-beats party & chill album for the animal-inclined! This album celebrates not only cats but the spirit of diversity and togetherness among all beings on Earth. Whether oneʼs home is shared with cats, dogs, rodents, birds, humans, or simply a love for all creatures, this record serves as the soundtrack—a ride away from the bustle, cruising on a technicolor catbus past the soul train to the rainbow bridge.

Inspired by Furnace Record Pressingʼs resident rescue cats, Tibby and Slippy, this LP benefits cats who need it most. 100% of proceeds will be donated to Brooklyn Animal Action, supporting their mission to rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals in need. This project has been made possible through the generous support of Furnace Record Pressing, Catbeats, and all participating vendors, who have donated their services to ensure every cent goes directly to helping animals.

          The Soul Vendors

          Swing Easy / Ringo Rock

Two killer tunes from The Soul Vendors. Absolutely seminal foundation groundbreaking late 1960s reggae cuts from Studio One.

The Soul Vendors (and their other incarnations as The Sound Dimension and Soul Bros) established the sound of reggae, their tracks replayed and sampled many times over throughout the 1970s, 80s, 90s and beyond.

‘Swing Easy’ and ‘Ringo Rock’ are two of The Soul Vendors’ toughest cuts, freshly pressed on this new 45.

            TRACK LISTING

            1. Swing Easy
            2. Ringo Rock

Sublime soulfulness from Georgie Sweet, the Bournemouth-born, Brighton-based singer/songwriter tipped by the likes of Gilles Peterson and Jazz FM's Tony Minvielle for big things with a track taken from the ' I Swear To You' long player.

On this collaboration with First Word Records Sweet's heavenly voice is very much at the centre of 'All That We Were', with dazzling close harmony work gliding gracefully across a laid back groove that slopes along in nicely lazy fashion.

This release from the ever reliable Mukatsuku label gives DJs extra flexibility with a flipside version that eaves the lead lines out but leaves the groove and the soothing backing vocals intact. Sweet, in more ways than one.

            Tom Of Brooklyn

Running From My Love / Spend All My Time Loving You

Brooklyn's elusive Tom returns with the first release on Sweet Breeze Sound, a new label launched by Washington, DC's Marc Meistro of Sol Power All-Stars, aka Glenn Echo. He has already turned heads with a fine set of 12"s on Razor-N-Tape and Sol Power Sound, and here brings some dubby disco grooves and infectious samples. Side A leans into loved-up feels, looping an irresistible 80s r&b vocal over bouncing bass and layers of percussion. The B-side shifts to a more melancholic mood and is run through with a feeling of longing through a single repeated phrase supported by deep dub bass and driving disco rhythm. This is a great inaugural release from a label sure to become essential.

Nalbandian The Ethiopian & Either / Orchestra

              Nalbandian The Ethiopian (Ethiopiques)

The Éthiopiques series returns! Essential archive recordings from an extremely fruitful period in Ethiopian music.

Before “Swinging Addis” took over the world, there was Moussié Nerses Nalbandian — the Armenian-born composer who shaped modern Ethiopian music. Mentor, arranger, and pioneer, he laid the foundations of Ethio-jazz.

This Éthiopiques volume revives his forgotten legacy, recorded live by Either/ Orchestra First issue ever with new exclusive photos and in depth liner 8-page insert.

“Ethiopian jazzmen are the best musicians that we have seen so far in Africa.
They really are promising handlers of jazz instruments.”

              Wilbur De Paris
(1959, after a concert in Addis Ababa)

አዲስ፡ዘመን። *Addis zèmèn* **A new era.**
The time is the mid-1950s and early 1960s, just before "Swinging Addis" bloomed – or rather boomed – onto the scene. Brass instruments are still dominant, but the advent of the electric guitar, and the very first electronic organs, are just around the corner. Rock’n'Roll, R’n’B, Soul and the Twist have not yet barged their way in. Addis Ababa is steeped in the big band atmosphere of the post-war era, with Glenn Miller's *In the* *Mood* as its world-wide theme song, neck and neck with the Latin craze that was in vogue at the same period. Life has become enjoyable once again, with the return of peace after the terrible Italian Fascist invasion of Ethiopia (1935-1941). The redeployment of modern music is part and parcel of the postwar reconstruction. *Addis zèmèn* – a new era – is the watchword of the postwar period, just as it was all across war-torn Europe.
The generation who were the young parents of baby boomers** were the first to enjoy this musical renaissance, before the baby boomers themselves took over and forever super-charged the soundtrack of the final days of imperial reign. Music is Ethiopia's most popular art form, and very often serves as the best barometer for the upsurge of energy that is critical for reconstruction. Whether it be jazz in Saint-Germain-des-Prés or the *zazous* who revolutionised both jazz and French *chanson* after the *Libération*, be it Madrid's post-Franco Movida, or Dada, the Surrealists and *les années folles* that followed World War I, the periods just after mourning and hardship always give rise to brighter and more tuneful tomorrows. Addis Ababa, as the country's capital, and the epicentre of change, was no exception to this vital rule.

              **Two generations of Nalbandian musicians**
Nersès Nalbandian belonged to a family of Armenian exiles, who had moved to Ethiopia in the mid-1920s. The uncle Kevork arrived along with the fabled "*Arba Lidjotch*", the** "*40 Kids*", young Armenian orphans and musicians that the Ras Tafari had recruited when he visited Jerusalem in 1924, intending to turn their brass band into the official imperial band. If Kevork Nalbandian was the one who first opened the way of modernism, pushing innovation so far as to invent musical theatre, it was his nephew Nersès who would go on to become, from the 1940s and until his death in 1977, a pivotal figure of modern Ethiopian music and of the heights it. Going all the way back to the 1950s. Nothing less. And it is Nersès who is largely to thank for the brassy colours that so greatly contributed to the international renown of Ethiopian groove. While the younger generations today venture timidly into the genealogy of their country's modern music, often losing their way amidst a distinctly xenophobic historiographical complacency, many survivors of the imperial period are still around to bear witness and pay tribute to the essential role that "Moussié Nersès" played in the rise of Abyssinia's musical modernity.
Given the year of his birth (15 March 1915), no one knows for sure if Nersès Nalbandian was born in Aintab, today Gaziantep (Turkiye/former Ottoman Empire) or on the other side of the border in Alep, Syria... What is certain is that his family, like the entire Armenian community, was amongst the victims of the genocide perpetrated by the Turks. Alep, the place of safety – today in ruins.
Before Nersès then, there was uncle Kevork (1887-1963). For a quarter of a century, he was a whirlwind of activity in music teaching and theatrical innovation. *Guèbrè Mariam le Gondaré* (የጎንደሬ ገብረ ማርያም አጥቶ ማግኘት, 1926 EC=1934) is his most famous creation. This play included "ten Ethiopian songs" — a totally innovative approach. According to his autobiographical notes, preserved by the Nalbandian family, Kevork indicates that he composed some 50 such pieces over the course of his career. This shows just how much he understood, very early on, the critical importance of song as Ethiopia's crowning artistic form. Indeed, for Ethiopian listeners, the most important thing is the lyrics, with all their multifarious mischief, far more than a strong melody, sophisticated arrangements or even an exceptional voice. (This is also why Ethiopians by and large, and beginning with the artists and producers themselves, believed for a long time — and wrongly — that their music could not possibly be exported, and could never win over audiences abroad, who did not speak the country's languages).

Last but not least, one of Kevork's major contributions remains composing Ethiopia's first national anthem – with lyrics by Yoftahé Negussié.
Nersès Nalbandian moved to Ethiopia at the end of the 1930s, at the behest of his ground-breaking uncle. Proficient in many instruments (pretty much everything but the drums), conductor, choir director, composer, arranger, adapter, creator, piano tuner, purveyor of rented pianos,... he was above all an energetic and influential teacher. From 1946 onwards, thanks to Kevork's connexion, Nersès was appointed musical director of the Addis Ababa Municipality Band. In just a few years, Nersès transformed it into the first truly modern ensemble, thanks to the quality of his teaching, his choice of repertoire, and the sophistication of his arrangements. It was this group that would go on to become the orchestra of the Haile Selassie Theatre shortly after its inauguration in 1955, which was a major celebration of the Emperor's jubilee, marking the 25th anniversary of his on-again-off-again reign.

At some point or other in his long career, Nersès Nalbandian had a hand in the creation of just about every institutional band (Municipality Band, Police Orchestra, Imperial Bodyguard Band, Army Band, Yared Music School…), but it was with the Haile Selassie Theatre – today the National Theatre – that his abilities were most on display, up until his death in 1977. To this must be added the development of choral singing in Ethiopia, hitherto unknown, and a sort of secret garden dedicated to the memory of Armenian sacred music, and brought together in two thick, unpublished volumes. Shortly before his death (November 13, 1977), he was appointed to lead the impressive Ethiopian delegation at Festac in Lagos, Nigeria (January-February 1977).

His status as a stateless foreigner regularly excluded him from the most senior positions, in spite of the respect he commanded (and commands to this day) from the musicians of his era. Naturally gifted and largely self-taught, Nerses was tirelessly curious about new musical developments, drawing inspiration from the very first imported records, and especially from listening intensely to the musical programmes broadcast over short-wave radio – BBC *First*. A prolific composer and arranger, he was constantly mindful of formalising and integrating Ethiopian parameters (specific “musical modes”, pentatonic scale, and the dominance of ternary rhythms) into his “modernisation” of the musical culture, rather than trying to over-westernise it. It even seems very probable that *Moussié* Nerses made a decisive contribution to the development of tighter music-teaching methods, in order to revitalise musical education during this period of prodigious cultural ferment. Flying in the face of all the historiographical and musicological evidence, it is taken as sacrosanct dogma that the four musical modes or chords officially recognised today, the *qǝñǝt* or *qiñit* (ቅኝት), are every bit as millennial as Ethiopia itself. It would appear however that some streamlining of these chords actually took place in around 1960. It was only from this time onward that music teaching was structured around these four fundamental musical modes and chords: *Ambassel*, *Bati*, *Tezeta* and *Antchi Hoyé*. A historical and musical “details” that is, apparently, difficult to swallow, especially if that should honour a *foreigner*. Modern Ethiopian music has Nersès to thank for many of its standards and, to this day, it is not unusual for the National Radio to broadcast thunderous oldies that bear unmistakable traces of his outrageously groovy touch.

This Better Be Something Great EP

Debuts come and go. Some serve as juvenilia. Others showcase lost promise. Rarely are they cultural touchpoints. Enter This Better be Something Great by Westside Cowboy, an EP rammed with nu-generational indie. It’s been a while since something so era-defining dropped but you get the impression that Westside Cowboy are about to become a reference point. Shorthand for a new movement in guitar music. And when the dust settles, held in similar acclaim reserved for only the most influential of indie bands. With a sound raw as a carpet burn, they ride a thrilling lo-fi boxcar tuned to the melodic precision of Teenage Fanclub and held together with the slacker cool of Pavement. Authentic, fidgety and immediate, the guitars on this record crackle like a twinkling bed of kindling primed to ignite at any given moment and when they do it’s a barn dance of headrush overdrive & blitzkrieg drums leaving listeners raw and fully exposed to each bristling, crackle of magic coming their way. File under: modern classic.

                STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: The apex of the modern sound of loose, jangling indie and off-kilter experimental rock from Manchester's own Westside Cowboy. If the 7" was anything to go by, this latest iteration of their deeply melodic but unusually chaotic grunge-pop indie business is going to go down a STORM. Get in quick.

                  Swimming Paul

                  Smiling Through The Pain 2

Swimming Paul’s music has always lived in the push-and-pull between euphoria and melancholy; the rare kind of electronic music that can make you cry while your body keeps moving. On Smiling Through the Pain 2 (out October 24 via Headroom Records), the French-born, London-based producer doubles down on that emotional duality, delivering an album that feels as much like a diary as it does a DJ set.

Over the course of 15 tracks, Paul stitches together late-night catharsis, suburban nostalgia, and the jagged tenderness of early adulthood. The record is sequenced like an unbroken night out: the giddy anticipation, the sudden moments of reflection, the quiet comedown as the sun edges in. It’s an album that refuses to treat joy and sadness as opposites, they coexist here, often in the same chord progression.

“I don’t want to escape the feelings, I want to bring them with me” Paul says. “If you can’t stop thinking about something, you might as well dance with it.”

That philosophy runs through the singles: the emotional release of Holly (with Junior Simba), the aching nostalgia of Different Time, the hypnotic haze of Hard 2 Sleep, and the house-driven Drinking to Get Drunk, a bittersweet ode to nights spent outrunning your own thoughts. Elsewhere, Liza M1 folds heartbreak into an almost triumphant piano hook, while Shine a Light urges listeners to take risks and live without hesitation—as if youth’s boldness could be bottled.

Since debuting in 2023, Swimming Paul has quietly built an empire on emotional resonance: 150 million streams across platforms, 1.9 million monthly listeners on Spotify and more than 50 editorial placements (including Dance Party, Crying on the Dancefloor, Electronic Rising….), 10,000+ radio spins worldwide, and sold-out tours across Europe and North America. His sound has earned co-signs from BBC Radio 1, Triple J, KCRW, Sirius XM and a wave of DJs who value melody as much as momentum.

But Smiling Through the Pain 2 isn’t chasing charts, it’s chasing connections. Paul’s global fanbase, nurtured through a lively Discord community and nights on the road, has become a two-way conversation, with fans’ stories feeding back into the music’s emotional core.

This autumn, Paul takes the album to stages that match its ambition, from London to a string of US club dates, festivals and intimate pop ups designed for shared release.

Smiling Through the Pain 2 is an invitation to feel everything at once. To sweat through the sadness. To let your guard down under strobe lights. To realise that the best nights out don’t make you forget; they help you remember.

The DVD also includes 'I Wonder If I’m Singing What You’re Thinking Me To Sing', a documentary by Christopher Nicholson following Michael Gira’s 2022 solo tour.

Refined through relentless improvisation and live performance, as well as newly composed studio pieces, 'Birthing' is a testament to Michael Gira’s uncompromising sonic vision. Beginning as skeletal acoustic compositions, the songs were gradually expanded and transformed in the studio with longtime live members and collaborators.

“This album, coupled with the recent live release, 'Live Rope', constitutes my final foray (as producer / impresario) into the all-consuming sound worlds that have been my obsession for years. We’ll do a final tour in this mode towards the end of 2025, then that’s it. After that, Swans will continue, so long as I’m able, but in a significantly pared down form. Hints of that direction can be found in a few moments on the current album. In the meantime, my hope is that the music provides a positive and fertile atmosphere in which to dream.” – Michael Gira / Swans

Produced by Gira, 'Birthing' was recorded at Soundfabrik Berlin, mixed at Candy Bomber Studio by Ingo Krauss, and mastered by Doug Henderson at Micro-Moose.

                      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: A perfect continuation of 2023's epic 'The Beggar', 'Birthing' sees Gira and Co drift through a raft of sonically expansive, emotionally weighty pre-post-rock gloomers. A perfect distillation of the modern sound of Swans.

                      Anolah Feat. Hak Baker

                      Slack Line

Genre-defying London artist Anolah's adrenaline-fuelled new single 'Slack Line'. The single features guest vocals from lauded London singer and poet Hak Baker and will be released on Speedy Wunderground as part of their 7” Single Series.

From an upbringing in the midst of many underground scenes, Anolah's
childhood was a whirlwind of city-hopping, sound systems, performing and
creating. Now firmly rooted in London, Anolah's diverse experiences and
encounters with unconventional characters and musicians from many
backgrounds have been a wellspring of inspiration for her journey as a
                        songwriter and instrumentalist.

Produced by Dan Carey, 'Slack Line' sees Anolah’s far reaching musical
palette - which merges elements of soul, jazz, R&B, punk, and hip hop with
jungle, dub and breakbeat - come together for an incisive and empowering
sub-3-minute powerhouse full of hyperactive bass and glitched-out electronics.

Hak Baker’s guest vocals add further attitude to the track as their vocal lines
merge for its explosive chorus, singing/shouting “Yours and yours will be yours
/ Mines will be mines / Rats don’t get cats eyes / I hear u scurry all fours / Feet
to the floor / Chewin the slackline”.

Speaking on the single Anolah says “Sometimes people get a little too
confident in who they think you are and project that onto you. And it’s like babe we’re not married, I didn’t ask for your input so let me do me and you can do you.”

This 7” release also features a signature dub remix by Carey titled 'Dub Line' which sees the track knolled out and rebuilt, further accentuating the borderless and eclectic sound of Anolah’s musical style.

                        Forest Swords

                        Engravings - 2025 Reissue

Forest Swords' debut album 'Engravings' is back in print on vinyl and CD for the first time in years, newly remastered by Rashad Becker with previously unheard bonus tracks exclusive to this edition.

Created by electronic producer and composer Matthew Barnes, and originally released via Tri Angle Records, 'Engravings' received instant acclaim from the likes of Resident Advisor, Pitchfork, The Guardian and saw Barnes take his hypnotic live show across festivals like Sonar, Glastonbury, Unsound and Le Guess Who.

While much of British electronica is defined by its inner cities, 'Engravings' was recorded in Barnes' hometown on the banks of an ancient river in Merseyside, the album's earthy, organic soundscape reflected the landscape and climate: all silt and sandstone, woodlands and wind, with the ghosts of Liverpool's pop music and clubbing history echoing in the near distance.

The album was a prototype for a sonic vocabulary Barnes has expanded on over the next few years: in critically acclaimed studio albums ('Compassion' and 'Bolted' via Ninja Tune), collaborations with Massive Attack and Neneh Cherry, remixes for the likes of Bjork, as well as commissions for video games, ballet and film scores - of which he has carved a career as an in-demand composer and sound designer.

'Engravings' is a snapshot of an artist confidently defining their own language: a piece of work that distills influences like dub, ambient, rave, post-rock and psychedelia into an ancient-futurist musical vision that feels timeless and vital.

                          Infinite Coles

                          SweetFace Killah

‘SweetFace Killah’ is a collection of 12 tracks that showcase Infinite’s innate vocal gifts, fearless approach to lyricism and songwriting, teaming up with producer Zach Witness (Doechii, Frank Ocean, Erykah Badu) to deliver a feast of sonic experimentations. The album reflects Infinite’s journey, through numerous personal challenges to authentically express himself fearlessly and joyously, free from fear of judgement, while channelling his deep connection to the vibrant Vogue-Ballroom culture and identity.

Tracks include the singles ‘BGM’ and ‘Boots Ballroom C*nt Mix’ featuring Maleigh Zan & Julz, which were both released earlier this summer, with ‘Boots Ballroom C*nt Mix’ hailed as “An anthem that serves as a manifesto in serving” by Clash. Other album highlights include explosive, high-energy bangers like ‘DMs’, a stomping afro-house cut that tells the haters in his DMs to shut the hell up, and ‘Shoot’ a booty-bass banger that tells a hater to relax and enjoy the night. There are also slower, soul-stirring tunes like ‘Mama Song’ an infectious afro-house cut which is an ode to all the mothers, ‘Thankful’ an R&B soul track that is full of gratitude for how far he has come, to powerfully emotive piano ballads like ‘Body Strong’.

Infinite Coles said, “I am proud and excited to announce my debut album. It is the culmination of my journey, and I can’t wait to share it with the world. I want to thank all my incredible collaborators Zach Witness, Robot Moonjuice, Ugly Worldwide, so many to name, but you know who you are. I love you, family.”

                            Katherine Priddy

The Pendulum Swing - 2025 Repress

'The Pendulum Swing' follows Katherine Priddy's highly acclaimed 2021 debut 'The Eternal Rocks Beneath', which announced Priddy as a singular new talent on the contemporary roots music scene. Speaking about the single, 'First House On The Left', and the wider themes on the album Priddy commented: “Despite its soft and dreamy sound, this song provides the cornerstone around which the album and its themes orbit."

The album title 'The Pendulum Swing' is taken from a line in this song and describes the urge to leave and the even stronger urge to return. It also sums up this second album as a whole nicely - "despite moving forward and feeling the need to do something different with this second release, I still can't help but return to those fundamental, unchanging things at the root of it all: home, family, love." Once again recorded in Birmingham by producer Simon J Weaver, guest musicians comprise John Smith (lead guitar), Harry Fausing Smith (strings), Marcus Hamblett (brass/double bass), George Boomsma (guitar, backing vocals, co-writer on track 'Ready To Go'), Polly Virr (cello) and even a brief appearance from Priddy’s family members right at the end of the album, in keeping with its themes. With 'The Pendulum Swing', Priddy has managed to keep moving forward whilst acknowledging and honouring all that has gone before.

                              Yell At Cloud

Over four years in the making, 'Yell At Cloud' is the follow up to the PLOSIVS critically hailed debut (RollingStone.biz said “best new release of the week” in 2021). Why so long between releases, you ask?

Nov. 2020 the band was invited to be the first guinea pigs at No Fun Club recording studio in Winnipeg, Canada and baptize the brand new facility. The band would live and record in the studio and be densely immersed in the forming of this new record. It was still during the days of COVID lockdowns and the earliest stages of permitted, international travel. Producer, engineer and studio designer Mike Bridavsky (Deerhoof, Magnolia Electric Co., The Cowboys, Durand Jones & The Indications, Half Japanese, The Residents) welcomed us with open arms and helmed the controls. Unfortunately, a massive Arctic storm (even by Winnipeg standards) descended. The compound was without power for the first five days. Using generators running on diesel and heat powered by sheep tallow, the band had to resort to using as little electricity as possible. Most of what you hear on 'Yell At Cloud' was recorded in the dark or by candlelight in below freezing conditions. It wasn’t as romantic as it sounds. Due to Canada’s regulations for foreign travelers during the pandemic, we had to forge out on foot once a day in blizzard-like conditions to a clinic a mile away where we had to be swabbed nasally, between the toes and in the groin area in order to be tested for COVID so we could be allowed to stay in the country for another 24 hours. Imagine a band trying making a record in John Carpenter’s The Thing. This had a massive influence on the material and the way it was captured to tape. Finally the sessions became so intense the band members could no longer sustain focus to completion and decided to return home to finish the record at a later date. Months turned to years. Drummer Atom Willard was now the full time member of the Alkaline Trio. Guitarist John Reis focused on Hot Snakes and his solo recordings and shows with Swami John Reis. Singer and guitarist Rob Crow continued with Pinback and a myriad of projects both musical and visual. Bassist Jordan Clark reconnected with his band The Frights and began touring and recording with them once again. There was such a massive emotional dust cloud kicked up during the recording of 'Yell At Cloud' that it took four years to settle. Finally, Ben Moore (who recorded and mixed the bands debut) stepped in and mixed 'Yell At Cloud'. In order to a create seamless continuity with the original tracks, Ben mixed the majority of these files in the dark with the brightness of his screen turned to the lowest setting.

The result is a claustrophobic album that searches for an oasis within. From lurching dissonance to uplifting harmonic convergences 'Yell At Cloud' is a stark, black and white departure from their debut.

                                  Forever, I've Been Being Born

'Forever, I’ve Been Born' is Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter’s first new album since 2011’s 'Marble Son', and the band’s 5th since 2002. A suite of masterful folk-rock songs, emotive songs from an open heart, dwelling in a brightness yet deep in the ethereal and melancholic. In the making for ten years, the album centres around the power of Jesse’s incredible voice, which has never been more beautiful, evocative, and hauntingly intimate. Electric guitarist Phil Wandscher’s playing masterfully frames these songs with classic and fractured tones, a duet of vulnerability and strength frequently on the edge.

Led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Todd Park Mohr, Big Head Todd and The Monsters have been mainstays of the jam band scene for 35 years, bringing their easygoing blend of blues, funk, and rock to stages across the country (and are touring right now!). So, you’d think 'Sister Sweetly', the biggest album of their long and illustrious career, would have made it to wax a long time ago. We mean, like a LONG time ago. After all, this 1993 release went platinum, spawned three hit singles in 'Bittersweet', 'Broken Hearted Savior', and 'Circle', and stayed on the charts for over a year! But, go figure, it hasn’t…so finally we at Real Gone have hooked up with the band to put this ‘90s classic on vinyl. Sea blue vinyl, to be exact, remastered for the format with an insert with lyrics to boot. Limited to 3000 copies!

Australian artist Factory Preset dropped a killer album, Swingchronize Me, back in 2022 and it was an ode to the DIY acid wave scene of 90s Sydney DIY made using a 'swingchronizer,' aka a homemade box that "bypassed the temporal rigidity of other units allowing the freedom to create consistent swing effects." Now, four of the cuts get reworked into deep, groove-driven and masterfully well swung sounds that are fluid, loopy and could unfold endlessly without ever growing stale. Some are slow and predatory, others are more light and colourful, all of them perfect for dropping into long-form sets where both body and mind get locked in.

N1_SOUND & Ras Yunchie join forces on an 8-track LP that transcends both definition and generation. INNA DJ STYLE, out November 7th, marks the Toronto veteran singer’s first-ever vinyl release.

Pairing four vocal cuts with four dub versions on the B-side, "Inna DJ Style" bridges experimental dub, digi, and roots, embodying what Ras describes as an open sound - one that draws from reggae traditions while boldly breaking new sonic ground.

N1_SOUND first encountered Ras’ distinctive voice and soaring falsetto at Toronto sound system parties. A cornerstone of the city’s reggae scene, Ras Yunchie has been performing since 1983 and remains a vital presence more than 40 years on. His contributions have been recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National DJ Association, alongside titles such as DJ of the Year, DJ Sound Champion, and winner of the 1985 DJ Sound Clash.

While the rhythms pulse with heavy bass and the three-dimensional lead melodies synonymous with N1_SOUND, it’s Ras’ vocals that make "Inna DJ Style" truly shine. Each track was recorded in a single take and left largely untouched - a testament to the raw talent and enduring artistry of the 61-year-old singer. Across the four vocal cuts, the alchemy of contrasting styles, influences, and lived experience highlights how collaboration can push sound and genre into bold, unexpected territory.

Matt says: Digi dub and dancehall vibes here with a fresh, contemporary flavour and plenty of fire in its belly. An ace collaboration by two well respected sound bwoys.

Lazarus (Adult Swim Original Series Soundtrack)

“Every second counts when the end is near.” In Lazarus, Floating Points delivers a score that lets you feel every tick of the clock–slowing time just enough to sink into each moment. Across 6 tracks, his mix of electronic textures, jazz-inflected rhythms, and hypnotic grooves scores from quieter to high-tension scenes–and now, that atmosphere is captured in a stunning vinyl form.

A must-have for Floating Points fans and soundtrack collectors looking to own one of the most distinctive sonic chapters in the Lazarus world.

Barry says: A lovely little suite from Mr. Shepherd here, with jazzy percussion loops and flickering samples evoking everything from Four Tet to Pharoah Sanders, and deftly ending in a beautifully crispy, Cascade-adjacent 9-minute JAM. Genius level stuff.

                                          Kamasi Washington

Lazarus (Adult Swim Original Series Soundtrack)

“There are only 30 days until humanity is doomed.” In Lazarus, Kamasi Washington’s explosive score answers that countdown with energy and heart– a sonic lifeline for Axel’s mission against the clock to stop Hapna’s deadly fallout. Across 11 immersive tracks, Kamasi's bold jazz fusion pumps through the show’s urgent action and desperation, matching the pace of a world teetering on the brink, and now you can own it in vinyl.

Essential for Kamasi Washington fans, Watanabe devotees, and soundtrack collectors who want to feel every second of the Lazarus race for survival.

Barry says: Kamasi deals with the situation in the only way he knows how - jazz. Huge ensemble jazz pieces blast through the speakers, with Washington's unfathomably virtuosic saxophone screaming out atop the rapidly shifting base. Classic Kamasi, but NEW. Ace.

Probably the first album to be written and recorded entirely in a Bundesliga soccer stadium, namely the Millerntor Stadium of football team FC St. Pauli in Hamburg. Don't worry, it doesn't sound like stadium rock at all. Quite the opposite in fact…Lo-fi without being brittle and minimal without feeling sparse.

Dave Doughman is the heart and voice behind Swearing At Motorists, who perform and record mainly as a duo. Since 1995, Swearing At Motorists has built a cult following with their raw energy, heartfelt songwriting, and relentless DIY ethos. Dubbed "The World's Local Band," as well as "The Two Men Who", they've traveled countless miles playing shows worldwide, sharing stages with iconic acts like Guided By Voices, Songs:Ohia, The Breeders, Spoon, Unwound, Brainiac, The Lemonheads, My Morning Jacket, and more.

Lazarus (Adult Swim Original Series Soundtrack)

“Play me something with the vibe of a man who sold his soul to the devil.” In Lazarus, that’s the cue for Bonobo’s 15-track score to take over–bringing a cool, pulsing energy to Shinichirō Watanabe’s latest anime epic. Blending electronic, trip-hop, and cinematic textures, Bonobo’s music underscores the tense and atmospheric moments of a future where the miracle drug “Hapna” went from salvation to humanity’s doom.

Pressed in a stunning color variant and tailored for collectors, this edition captures Bonobo’s score the way it’s meant to be heard–warm, detailed, and ready to spin for years to come.

Essential listening for Bonobo fans and anyone ready to bring the pulse of Lazarus into their vinyl collection.

Barry says: One of my favourite electronic producers, Bonobo brings us a beautifully glitchy selection of post-club ambient and rippling, atmospheric downbeat. Think North Borders era with a little more acoustic instrumentation and tentative unease. Stunning.

                                                SWORN

Swedish dream pop purveyors The Mary Onettes return with their long-awaited fifth album, 'SWORN'. The band have long been the standard bearers of the dream pop genre and there is no doubt how much this album has been eagerly awaited. This album is another sample of their lush, powerful and emotional songwriting. The songs on 'SWORN' are clear examples of how relevant The Mary Onettes always feel. With even more suggestive lyrics and timeless production they kick off another intriguing chapter.

                                                  Thought Leadership

                                                  Ace Of Swords

On a "Balearic-Jazz trip", the phenomenally hyped Thought Leadership returns with another X ideas: the deck this time chooses the Ace of Swords. In the acclaim garnered by III of Pentacles, there were many whispers of “Balearic” from those in the know. As soon as you drop the needle on XI you will be basking in turbo Balearica.

The sonic palate has been augmented by the addition of synth and bass; there are more guitar layers, more pedals and more organic drums this time – a much fuller production. Still DIY, and still recorded straight to multitrack, just ever so slightly grander in scale; think a rough-hewn, long-lost Claremont 56 cut and you’ll have some idea of how XI opens this future classic LP.

The touchstones so key to the vision of Pentacles (Cocteau Twins, Dif Juz, Durutti Column) are all still present and correct; XII could be a piece from Extractions, XIII is pure Garlands-era Guthrie and, now with the shuffling jazz drums, XV makes TL even more LC – but more disparate influences are found this time out too. ECM guitar legends John Abercrombie and Pat Metheny in the more considered melodic phrasing and harmonic structure of the ideas and a nod to the cosmic Balearic spirit in the overall vibe, means more is offered to the listener across Swords.

XVI and XVII are the biggest indicators to Thought Leaderships’ new found love of The Real Book and their grasp of jazz chords. The former sounds like if Mike Hedges had produced on a heavily sedated ECM date in the early 80s, whilst the latter is Bright Size Life condensed into a most post-punk shard of Strat conversation. The syrupy Phase 90 on the lead parts lends much weight to the guitar melodies, a beautiful tonal counterpoint to the Vox-ish chimes of the plangent chords we’ve all come to love.

The flip again treats us to three extended, improvised jams. XVIII owes as much to Canterbury as it does to Krautrock, another modal voyage through the stars. Light the incense and drift away, guided by delayed cymbals and weaving ribbons of guitar. XIX has almost a New-Wave/Sophisti-Pop energy to it in tone, if not in structure and execution. Something almost Tears for Fears-esque in the chiming chorus guitars. An interesting outlier that has already received a lot of love from those that have heard it. XX is the starkest idea, and the only piece this time with no drums. What we do get, however, is a free exploration over a two chord-vamp. It’s Harvest Time meets Planet Caravan and a fitting end to this Balearic jazz trip.

Be With is honoured to present the first ever vinyl release of Ace Of Swords, carefully remastered by Be With's engineer Simon Francis to ensure it sounds better than ever after its initial tape release. Cicely Balston's expert skills have made sure nothing is lost in the cut at Abbey Road Studios whilst the records have been pressed to the highest possible standard at Record Industry, in Holland. The original tape cover artwork, so crucial to Thought Leadership's striking visual aesthetic, has been rejigged for vinyl issue here at Be With.

The last one flew. You have been warned.

Barry says: Echoic guitar effortlessly woven around a core of minimalist percussion and rolling bass, occasionally flecked with stabs of saturated synthesisers and soaring solos. There are obviously links to be drawn to other well-known Manchester bands that really like this sort of chorused guitar, but that's certainly no bad thing. Superb.

Sweet Harm are a four piece punk band from the Hudson Valley, NY that treads the intersection of beauty and grit, anchored by love and fuzz. Their new LP 'Certain Sun' is a fever of moods: songs unfolding with a grounded force, equal parts scrappy and shimmering. Jagged guitars converging with bittersweet vocal interplay from Dominic Armao and Kate Larson are anchored by the propulsive rhythm section of Mike Campbell and Liv Battell. Their songs grasp at connection from all angles, weaving a sturdy urgency that feels both bruised and vivid. The members have been playing music in circles around each other for most of their adult lives, catching back up in 2023 and building a new focus together, finally feeling at home with each other.

                                                      Joyeria

                                                      Graceful Degradation EP

‘The Swimmer’ pulses with driving rhythms and a striking synth line, expanding on Joyeria’s signature existential indie-rock sound — sharp, satirical, and laced with experimental edge.

Reflecting on Graceful Degradation, Joyeria describes the EP as a collection of songs that don’t fit neatly into boxes: “little boxes of shadows and unexpected laughter… raw, like a skinned knee. Honest, in the way a chipped teacup holds the stain of too much tea.” Drawing on experiences from Poland, Canada, and now London — “the city that swallows the unwanted, makes them its own peculiar ghost” — the EP embraces imperfection, searching for meaning in the strange angles and fractured edges of modern existence.

                                                        Live Laugh Love

Earl Sweatshirt, acclaimed rapper, producer and one of hip-hop’s most uncompromising voices, has been a defining creative force for over a decade. His lyricism and singular vision have earned him critical acclaim, a devoted global following and a Grammy nomination for his contribution to Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange. Known for pushing boundaries and reshaping underground rap, Earl continues to evolve with each release.

He now returns with Live Laugh Love, his most expansive and conceptually ambitious project to date. Rooted in themes of wellness, growth and the philosophy behind its title, the album reflects Earl’s current way of life, choosing joy while staying grounded in truth. Across 11 tracks, he folds in irony, nostalgia and sharp observation, creating a body of work that embraces life’s contradictions: joy alongside darkness, levity alongside gravity.

                                                          A Life On Sweets Alone

Josie is Copenhagen’s newest pop group, formed in 2023 and consisting of four friends Charlotte, Dawn, Martin and Anton. Originally a trio, they recorded an early demo before Anton joined on drums, solidifying their lineup and setting the stage for their debut album.

Their debut album, 'A Life on Sweets Alone', is set to be released on the legendary K Records and Perennial, delivering a raw and infectious mix of jangle, wistfulness and attitude.

Josie blends poetic yet relatable lyrics with a rough-edged pop-punk sensibility. Fans of Talulah Gosh, Shop Assistants, and Tiger Trap will feel right at home in Josie’s world, where dreamy melodies and jangly guitars meet woozy vocals but retain the genres original punky “fuck you”-energy and propulsive rhythm section.

With their playful take on indie pop Josie brings a fresh perspective
to a classic sound—and they’re just getting started

Sweep It Into Space - National Album Day 2025 Edition

As part of National Album Day 2025’s celebration of rock, Jagjaguwar are making Dinosaur Jr.’s twelfth album available on limited edition Opaque Light Purple Blast Vinyl. Here is Sweep It Into Space, the fifth new studio album cut by Dinosaur Jr. during the 13th year of their rebirth. Originally scheduled for issue in mid-2020, this record’s temporal trajectory was thwarted by the coming of the Plague. But it would take more than a mere Plague to tamp down the exquisite fury of this trio when they are fully dialed-in. Sweep It Into Space is a masterpiece of zoned dialing. Recorded, as usual, at Amherst’s Biquiteen, the sessions for Sweep It Into Space began in the late Autumn of 2019, following a West Coast/ South East tour. The only extra musician used this time was Kurt Vile. Indeed, Sweep It Into Space is a very cool album. As is typical, Lou Barlow writes and sings two of the album’s dozen tunes and Murph’s pure-Flinstonian drumming drives the record like a go-cart from Hell. Lou’s songs here are as elegant as always. But there are very few moments where you wouldn’t know you were hearing Dinosaur Jr. in blindfolded needle drop. They have a signature sound as sure as the Stooges or Sonic Youth or Discharge ever did. They continue to expand their personal universe with Sweep It Into Space, without ever losing their central core.

Adam Wise, you may know, is Fabulous Lover and this new record marks his first for Pete Herbert's Music for Swimming Pools. It's a mature mix of 80s-inspired Balearic electro-funk with a tropical twist straight from his Bali studio. This sun-soaked collection bridges sunset vibes and dancefloor energy with 'It's Lonely At The Top' a funky opener with a squelchy bassline and playful riffs. 'Elevate' douses you in 80s synth sounds that glow warm, and label head remixes into a more buoyant Balearic house beat. Elsewhere is the gentle swagger of 'Low Bounce' and lush synth disco buzz of 'Automatic.' Feel-good grooves, for sure.

Released in 1996 at the height of Britpop’s cultural takeover, Free Peace Sweet saw Dodgy break into the mainstream with a sun-drenched sound that set them apart from their more angst-ridden peers. Bursting with optimism, melody, and a touch of psychedelic sparkle, the album became the band’s biggest commercial success. Its lead single, "Good Enough", was a bona fide anthem, climbing to No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart — Dodgy’s highest-charting track to date. Follow-ups "In a Room" and "If You're Thinking of Me" also struck a chord with listeners, hitting No. 12 and No. 11, respectively. Even "Found You", the album’s final single, secured a strong No. 19 spot, solidifying the band’s chart credentials. Free Peace Sweet reached No. 7 at the UK Albums Chart and later achieved certified platinum.

Swell Maps unveils the CD of The John Peel Sessions. This follows the release of the limited edition red vinyl for Record Store Day — remastered and available officially for the first time in over 40 years.

Noisy, chaotic, and defiantly experimental, Swell Maps may not have found commercial success in their time, but their impact on music is undeniable. An inspiration to bands such as R.E.M., Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., Pavement and Nirvana, with Kurt Cobain famously being a fan and often seen sporting a Swell Maps T-Shirt. A democracy within the confines of punk’s anything is possible, members Biggles Books, Jowe Head and brothers Nikki Sudden and Epic Soundtracks—helped shape the landscape of post-punk and DIY music. Now, for the first time in over 40 years, The John Peel Sessions brings together all three of their recordings for John Peel, a figure instrumental in championing their sound.

Formed in the early ’70s and fully realised by 1976, Swell Maps embodied the DIY ethos, launching their own label and self-releasing the jagged, frenetic debut single ‘Read About Seymour’ in 1977. Peel was an early supporter, playing their record as soon as it landed on his desk—a moment the band described as one of disbelief and elation. His regular airplay of their music helped solidify their cult status, and these sessions capture the raw energy, off-kilter melodies, and boundary-pushing creativity that defined them.

The John Peel Sessions is a vital document of Swell Maps at their most unfiltered—three sessions of unpredictable, exhilarating noise.

First time available on vinyl! With bonus tracks and unreleased material! The Sultans formed in 2000 and were John Reis / Slasher and Tony DiPrima and at times also Andy Stamets / Black Flame (Rocket From The Crypt’s ND) and Dean Reis / Black Velvet (Mannequin Piss, Spider Fever, The Heartaches, Los Dug Dugs). Shipwrecked was the bands second album and was released only on CD in 2004. It was hailed as a “power-pop meets ’70s punk classic” by Virtual Underground Press and “…a masterpiece of the form...essential” by the Cleveland Call And Post. This reissue is a labor of lust with maximum attention to detail in resurrecting these masters from their deteriorated, analog state. The result is a louder, thicker and even more bristling slab of triumphant rock ’n’ roll. Everything on this reissue cuts deeper and breaks the digital glass into razor sharp shards and then shits on the 1s and 0s. Treble Magazine says. “It is the perfect soundtrack to your post-breakup life: fourteen songs about heartache, shame, trying to move on, regrets and just plain old hate. (And by the by, hate has never sounded as good as this)”. Added to the original are four bonus tracks, one being a cover of The Dils “Blow Up” and another the never released “Out Of Focus”. Shipwrecked was the last record at Drag Racist (Hot Snakes, RFTC, etc) before it shuddered its doors for good.

Jason Molina was an artist who didn’t like to look back. Throughout the singer-songwriter’s life and career, a restless and evolving creative pulse propelled him forward, training his focus on what was next. His unyielding creativity and work ethic bore sacred fruit. In his short life, Molina achieved what most musicians strive for: a sound that is instantly recognizable but rarely repeats itself.

From the banks of Lake Erie in his hometown Lorain, Ohio, to international stages with his bands Songs: Ohia and Magnolia Electric Co., Molina performed his vast catalog of mysterious, romantic, tempestuous, and monumental songs that were at once innovative and rooted in American tradition. He consistently tinkered with his sound, image, band, and homebase in order to sate his muse. Tenor guitar-toting misfit. Lovesick lo-fi indie rocker. Dirgey slowcore bard. 21st century roots-rock trailblazer. Canonical Midwestern songwriter. Jason Molina planted his creative flag in all of these territories — to stake his claim, convey how far he’d traveled, and leave behind a trail of precious talismans.

With I Will Swim to You: A Tribute to Jason Molina — named after a line in Molina’s song “Lioness” — Run For Cover Records and a coterie of affiliated artists honor the songwriter’s enduring impact. The compilation of Molina covers is performed by some of today’s most visionary singer-songwriters, including MJ Lenderman, Hand Habits, Horse Jumper of Love, Sun June and more, and includes singular interpretations of Molina fan favorites and deep cuts from his solo albums and lesser-known EPs. The resulting collection, an unmistakable labor of love, is an often-stunning gestalt of generational talent paying homage to one of the most gifted but underrated American songwriters.

I've Never Met Anyone I Thought I Could Really Love (Until I Met You)

Debut single from Manchester band Westside Cowboy on Nice Swan. Riding a thrilling lo-fi boxcar tuned to the melodic precision of Teenage Fanclub and held together with the slacker cool of Pavement, for most bands this would be enough, but not for Westside Cowboy. Just when you think you have them pinned, they career the entire thing into a brick wall of country, trad and early harmony-coated, major-key rock’n’roll. They call this process ‘Britainicana’.

Freshly signed to indie tastemakers Nice Swan (Chalk, Sports Team, Pip Blom) and teaming up with Mercury Music Prize winner Lewis Whiting of English Teacher on production duties, debut single ‘I’ve Never Met Anyone I Thought I Could Really Love (Until I Met You)’, starts with a frenetic caterwaul of the band name. It’s a flag in the sand moment.

A territorial statement. Rhythmic, rattling drums turn into a three-chord assault, with its crackling guitars soon igniting the combustible, chorus vocals of enigmatic co-vocalist Aoife Anson O’Connell.

                                                                                STAFF COMMENTS

They've been growing a steady following around these parts with their frenetic live shows and we love 'em. WESTSIDE COWBOY! Yeeha!

'To Rid Myself of Truth' marks a transformative moment for Signs Of The Swarm, as they evolve beyond their deathcore roots, infusing their sound with elements of industrial, metalcore, and a savage, stomping aggression that firmly establishes them as a harbinger of a new era of heavy. From the very first notes of tracks like 'Natural Selection', and the album's lead single, 'HELLMUSTFEARME', it's clear that the Pittsburgh-based band is poised to become a global powerhouse. Their extensive tour history alongside heavyweights such as Lorna Shore, Whitechapel (with guest appearances from Will Ramos and Phil Bozeman), Suicide Silence, Chelsea Grin, and Fit For An Autopsy has paved the way for Signs Of The Swarm to break through and assert themselves as a rising force in the extreme metal scene.

He is part of the Moonrise Hill Material crew and now lands on Saint Wax with his first outing of the year. 'The Chosen One' brims with joy from the shimmering chords and vocal chops while bumpy drums get you moving. 'Pour L'Amour Du G-Funk (69 La Trik)' is a funky jam with smeared pads and excitable synths then 'Bay Disco Orkestra' brings a percussive twist and retro disco vibe. The trio of flip-side cuts explore slower, more soulful deep house and jazzy grooves that overflow with musicality, while a Gledd remix brings a lovely Latin skip and shuffle to 'Don't Hold Back Da Groove'.

Inspired, Art of Tones created an unofficial remix - a heartfelt tribute to this French Guiana treasure. It quickly lit up dancefloors, shared among DJs like GUTS, Antal, Radio Meuh... and many more...

While the original comfortably sits in a half-tempo groove, percussion heavy and giving the vocal chorus center stage; AOT adds electronic b-line, galloping 4/4 drums and uplifting party energy, effortlessly taking it to the club.

The song probably sounds more like The Fall getting into bed with The Sweet, but that’s just the way it turned out.

The B side, 'Pacio’r Fan', is about a journey back to a remembered teenage time, when idealism still burned and the world was full of potential. It is a wistful song, but it’s hopeful too: the idealistic flame is still there if you seek it out.

It's the debut outing in a planned run of edit experiments from the duo, both long-established figures in UK hip-hop since the late 80s. For this one, they chop and retool Malcolm McLaren's square-dance scratch classic into something far more breaks-heavy, nodding to the B-boy heritage of the original while reimagining it for the squeakier clean floors of today.

Following the success of his debut album 'When Will We Land?', Barry has continued to solidify himself as one of the most exciting names in electronic music today and his new album 'Loner' further cements that.

Though this is predominantly an electronic album, there are wisps of tropicalia and African percussion, bringing to mind the rhythmic acoustics of Bonobo or Caribou. A beautifully produced, uplifting journey.

Tailor-made for that insatiable desire to dance, it’s a release engineered for movement, locking straight into the pulse of late-night energy and crowd euphoria. As such, the track is unsurprisingly becoming a favourite in Purple Disco Machine’s sets already, where dates in Mexico, the USA, and Spain have left the dancefloors anything but a ‘Ghost Town’. Armed with a dancefloor weapon, Purple Disco Machine drops the release early for DJs on Beatport.

A master of channelling the nostalgia of dance music’s beginnings and blending it with a modern-day flair, Purple Disco Machine has expertly crafted a record reminiscent of throwback disco cuts. The soulful vocals come courtesy of Retrosonix, successful songwriters who have come together to specialise in retro disco vocals that ingeniously feel straight from the archives. You’ll be sonically transported back to a time when disco was heard on every corner. Tactfully letting the powerful hooks and provocative lyricism lead the rhythm for the tune, Purple Disco Machine’s iconic groove-driven beats and mesmerising synths lay the foundation for a dancefloor classic. Crafting breakdowns dripping with funk, the disco maestro builds to a crescendo that will undoubtedly be a crowd pleaser for his many shows in 2025.

On the release, Purple Disco Machine said: “While a number of my recent records have referenced the more electronic 80s disco sound, I never lost the love for the classic funky disco of the 70s - which in many ways was the original blueprint - and so it has been equally inspiring and enjoyable to work with this palette again. I'm hoping that the listeners are as haunted (in a good way…) by Ghost Town as I am !”

                                                                                            TRACK LISTING

                                                                                            A1. Extended Mix
                                                                                            B1. Instrumental Mix

The Saint Wax Edit Service series delivers another superb sonic sermon here with Haverdi at the metaphorical lectern. To get things under way, they lay down the impossible funky basslines of 'Chituna' which is powered by big brass and thudding kicks which only heighten the soul. 'Bamboo' is defined by dazzling disco synth stabs with a funky vocal and endlessly wiggling bsasline that cannot fail to get those hips moving. On the flip, 'Come Inn' brings some Afro vocals and low slung drum sleaze and last of all 'Asi Si' brings some Latin flair, organic percussion and marvellous trumpet work to really set the 'floor ablaze.

Georgie is a singer / songwriter currently based in Brighton, with a uniquely smooth, soulful vocal tone.

Whilst working on her debut record ('Misunderstood'), Georgie began a songwriting partnership with multi-instrumentalist Marc Rapson, who is on the boards throughout this project. The duo discovered a natural musical connection instantly, and began working on an abundance of beautiful new material shortly after the release of the first album; writing and creating at Rapson's home in Hertfordshire at various sessions from 2021 onwards, culminating in this new 12-track album, 'I Swear To You'.

Despite being one of the UK's best kept secrets, Georgie's already been pricking the ears of some highly-respected selectors. The first single from this record ('Smaller / All That We Were') received love from tastemakers such as BBC 6 Music's Gilles Peterson ("this one melts"), Jazz FM's Tony Minvielle ("supremely talented") and Clash Magazine ("exudes soulful grace"), whilst previous material found itself in the crates of legendary luminaries like DJ Jazzy Jeff & DJ Spinna amongst others.

At the end of 2024, Georgie signed to Worldwide Award-winning independent London-based label, First Word Records; although she previously featured before on the label, via the title track of the highly-acclaimed 2021 sophomore album by Children of Zeus, 'Balance', along with Akemi Fox. Prior to this her debut album 'Misunderstood' dropped back in 2020 on Futuristica Music; an independent imprint run by Deborah Jordan & Simon S, on which Georgie also collaborated with acclaimed producers like K15 and Mecca:83.

An all-round creative soul, away from creating music, Georgie also works as an illustrator and animator. However, her lifelong love of music is unquestionable. She's been a vocalist from a young age, initially working with her musical parents (a producer and professional singer respectively).

With a hugely diverse set of inspirations ranging from Stevie Wonder to Michael McDonald, Hiatus Kaiyote to Chappell Roan, Mac Miller to Sampha, and George Duke to EW&F, Georgie's respect, love and admiration for a wide range of music is clear; from jazz to soul to pop to hip hop.

Her own sound sits within the realm of glo-fi alternative r&b. From powerful piano-led ballads, to head-nod boom bap backdrops, this album exemplifies Georgie's eclectic influences and unique talents as a writer and a vocalist, which are growing exponentially. A tapestry of sound that developed whilst Sweet and Rapson moved from the beat-driven vibes of Georgie's earlier work, to finding themselves gravitating more and more to the simplicity of the piano and the voice.

It's this shift in styles that encapsulates the sonic and spiritual feel of the entire project, born out of a warm, creative environment, and full to the brim with heart and soul. 'I Swear To You' is a deeply personal reflection on youth, grief and self-acceptance. An homage to childhood, and the transition into adulthood, exploring the range of experiences and emotions that come with that.

The album cover mirrors the essence of the record; a photo of a hopeful, younger version of Georgie, filled with optimism and joy. Despite the emotional highs and lows expressed throughout the songs, the overarching message remains one of hope; encouraging listeners to keep looking toward the future, to never give up, and to hold onto that youthful sense of possibility.

From the ethereal acapella opening of 'The Ones We Loved', through to the irresistible jazz-hop bounce of tracks like 'As I Am', 'Smaller' and 'In My Stride', to the midtempo soulful bop of 'Equal Measure' and previously-released 'Energy', to epic ballads like 'Bedsheets' and first single 'All That We Were', to the more melancholy tones of 'Patricia' and 'Maybe in a Different Life', to the almost-gospel flavoured closing title track, this is a truly accomplished and timeless piece of work from edge to edge.

                                                                                            TRACK LISTING

South Wales newcomers MORN are today sharing their debut single ‘Modern Man’, out now on Speedy Wunderground as part of the Speedy Single Series.

Since landing in London in 2024, MORN have quickly embedded themselves in the capital’s DIY underground, selling out headline shows across London including a feral, full-throttle set at The Windmill Brixton, closing out Independent Venue Week. They also saw themselves included in Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent longlist.

MORN are a striking new presence emerging from the farmlands of Monmouth, South Wales. Two sets of siblings crafting a compelling blend of what they refer to as “doom over beautiful chords.” Announcing their arrival with the breathless, runaway train chaoticism of ‘Modern Man’, MORN weave spiky guitar passages and rumbling fuzz, with an urgency that feels as though they can’t get to the end of the song fast enough. With its nihilistic gang vocal of “Life is sh*t when you’re all alone, but it’s fine”, and its spiral into an unhinged closing chorus of “La la la”s, MORN are marking themselves out early as a dextrous band that are happy wrestling bedlam into something cathartic. ‘Modern Man’ is a thrilling introduction to a band just getting started.

Vocalist and guitarist Oliver Riba comments: "Modern Man came from the wild urgency of our lives. Born from teenage riffs, shaped by laughter, anger, and fear. It’s a desperate sprint through the loneliness and madness of routine, a strange reflection on the dream of escape. It felt right that it was all captured live, and Dan Carey really brought it to life with a touch of his magic. Welcome to the world of MORN."

                                                                                                TRACK LISTING

From the newly minted SWOB label. The third chapter of SW,’s tekkNOthing featuring a dub-oriented collection of five tracks that elegantly double back on the creative foundations from which the tekkNOthingproject emerged. With tempos on the low and analogue effects spilling over valleys of rhythm, the journey concludes with ‘thxJA’, where the sheer weight of dense musical layers unveils another chapter.

Goodman returns from the Western Kentucky bottomland with her latest full-length album, Planting by the Signs, available June 20, 2025 on her very own Slough Water Records via Thirty Tigers. Composed of songs inspired by love, loss, reconciliation, and the aforementioned ancient practice - how planting a garden, or weaning a baby, or getting a haircut are best timed in accordance with the cycle of the moon. A concept diametrically opposed to the tech-obsessed, profit margin-driven mania swirling around us. Through exploring themes related to planting by the signs, Goodman hopes to help herself and others reconcile this jarring disconnect, as well to pass along the story of the practice. Eleven tracks highlighted by the critically-acclaimed and award-winning artist’s singular voice and her penchant for juxtaposing vulnerable folk music with punchy rock ‘n roll, replete with chiming guitars, ethereal atmospherics, and her DIY ethos. Goodman provides a timely reminder that the only way forward is together, and that we must always take into account humanity’s dependence on and responsibility to the natural world.

“The Sophs arrived out of the great blue yonder,” says Rough Trade co-founders Geoff Travis and Jeannette Lee of the label’s newest signing, LA six-piece The Sophs. The band’s brutal honesty, flamingly intrusive thoughts, and broad genre-spreading caught their attention immediately. Rough Trade heard the sort of creativity and variety — and “don’t expect me to act pretty” sentiment — that could get The Sophs — including frontman Ethan Ramon, Sam Yuh (keyboards), Austin Parker Jones (electric guitar), Seth Smades (acoustic guitar), Devin Russ (drums), and Cole Bobbitt (bass) — a slot on nearly any stage. “It’s rare that a demo that arrives in the post sets your heart racing and sends you off on a quest to track down its sender. But that’s what happened when we listened to the music sent to us by Ethan Ramon,” Travis and Lee explain.

“As a band newly entering the public sphere, signing with Rough Trade felt like an act of symbiotic faith. They took as much of an interpersonal interest in us as we did in them. From late nights at the pub to earnest conversations about the real-life events that inspired our songs, Rough Trade has always been and continues to be a team of true music lovers - people we’re nothing short of honored to call our partners,” says Ramon of their signing to the esteemed indie label.

Ramon elaborates on ‘SWEAT’, “To me, the song feels like an attempt to overcompensate in the face of grief, one that fails misterably and ends with you being swallowed whole. I tried to capture the moment when the tension breaks and you realize you’re no longer in control of your emotions; your emotions are in control of you. That realization is humbling.”

                                                                                                    Swallow

The debut solo album from Ride bassist Steve Queralt is a beautifully brooding collection that combines the darkly textured soundscapes of early M83 or Sigur Rós with the post-punk of Joy Division and New Order, all with an electronic sheen reminiscent of Mark Pritchard or Boards Of Canada. It features guest vocals on several tracks from Sonic Cathedral labelmate Emma Anderson (formerly of Lush and Sing-Sing) and Verity Susman (Electrelane, MEMORIALS).

Swallow has been slowly but surely pieced together between Ride albums and tours over the past eight years and, perhaps as a result, has a slightly dystopian, almost Blade Runner feel that reflects the liminal spaces in which it was created.

There’s also an underlying anger and political slant. Despite the fact that the majority of the album is wordless, there is plenty of power and emotion, summed up by the few lines from Julie Sheldon’s poem ‘The Same Boat’ that appear on the closing track ‘Motor Boats’ (“We’re all in the same boat they say, but I would disagree”). According to Steve, they “capture the reality of our times perfectly”.

There are also other words on the album courtesy of the two guest vocalists. “There have been some amazing instrumental albums made over the last few years, especially in the nu-classical and post-rock worlds,” says Steve, who points out the influence of Mogwai, and even titled one of the album tracks ‘I Don’t Know How To Sing’, “but some of the tracks sounded like songs to me, just without any words.”

This led to the collaborations that, ultimately, tied the whole thing together and paved the way to the finished album. “One of the demos reminded me of Lush, who Ride had toured with in the ’90s, so I contacted Emma thinking her voice would be perfect. But she was confused and said she’d never sung lead vocals.”

“At the time I hadn’t even decided I was going to sing on my own records, so I told Steve I couldn’t do it,” explains Emma. “Then, a couple of years later, when I was singing on my own records and my debut album Pearlies was about to come out, I enquired about it, thinking he must have found someone else, but luckily he hadn’t.”

“After a few false starts, I started to doubt the project altogether. It was going nowhere,” says Steve. “Then, out of the darkness, Emma got back in touch to tell me that she’d found her voice and could I send her some tracks. A few files back and forth and an afternoon in the studio later and we had ‘Lonely Town’ and ‘Swiss Air’.”

In the meantime, Verity from Electrelane had added vocals to the song ‘Messengers’ and transformed the track. Matthew Simms, her then future bandmate in MEMORIALS, would go on to mix the finished album.

As brilliant as that was, this is a notable step up in cinematic intensity and songwriting skill. A profoundly superb debut album.

With a gestation period that traces back several years, ‘Open’ is their most intimate and personal body of work thus far, birthed during a time of self-reflection away from touring and during a time of individual growth for the pair.

While the trademark Dam Swindle four-to-the-floor beats are still ever-present on tracks like ‘The Present Is Always Perfect’, ‘I Need You’, and ‘Is This Love?’, it’s the gentle waves of synths on opener ‘Home’, the contemplative piano chords of ‘Bloom’ featuring Joep Beving, and the lo-fi ambience of ‘It’s Okay, I Can Wait’ that showcase a melancholic, ethereal sensibility previously uncharted by the duo. Collaborations with vocalists such as NYC’s Haile Supreme on ‘Not Enough’ and Neo-soul singer Faye Meana on ‘Girl’ expertly find room in between the dancefloor and home listening sessions, and a clear standout on the LP is the title cut where message-heavy rapped vocals from UK artist Samson ebb and flow amongst iridescent grooves.

Under the helm of Maarten and Lars’ adept A&R, their Heist imprint has become a beloved home for house heads of both schools old and new, platforming some of dance music’s biggest names from Cinthie to DJ Sneak as well as the musical dawning’s of artists such as Kassian and Makèz. The Dam Swindle alias has achieved house music royalty-like status across a storied 15-year career that includes two critically lauded full-lengths, collaborations with the likes of Tom Misch and Kerri Chandler, and a globetrotting touring schedule.

(aka Swedish producer Tomas Bodén) apply a stripped, dub methodology to Mayssa's rich stems, refracting the Arabic source through the hazy prism of Northern European electronica. Retaining ‘Marjaa…’s deep spatial framing and vaporous, shifting nature, traces are lifted and set down in a new landscape: a ghost of a ghost. Informed by Tomas' singular strand of ambient, minimalist, dub techno, ‘… (Versions)’ recalls the reductive, shimmering pulse of pioneering Berlin-based practitioners Basic Channel/Chain Reaction, but with the parameters stretched into the ether. Where versions typically focus on a rhythm, here the anchor is the tone and texture of Mayssa’s voice, around which a new world has been constructed. Disembodied and liminal, it conjures an eerie panorama that feels like a postscript to the original, further emphasizing the geopolitical events that have had such devastating effect in Mayssa’s homeland of Lebanon since that record’s release. ‘Marjaa…’ (tr. ‘reference’) combined Mayssa Jallad’s two main vocations: music and urban research/architectural history. The album was co-written with Fadi Tabbal and based on Mayssa's Historic Preservation master's thesis (‘Beirut’s Civil War Hotel District: Preserving the World’s First High-Rise Urban Battlefield’). The thesis examined a 5-month conflict that took place within Beirut's skyscraper-laden luxury hotel district of Minet El Husn near the start of the Lebanese Civil War. Addressing a post-war generation who have never been taught this difficult history, ‘Marjaa…’ was an attempt to process trauma, and “a call to protest for the renewal, rather than the recycling of the political class that once destroyed the country and holds us, to this day, hostage of its violence.” Often perceived as a mysterious, shadowy presence, Civilistjävel! has come increasingly to the fore in recent years through a consistently dazzling stream of records, released both anonymously and via Fergus Jones’ FELT imprint, often appearing with scant information and tracks for the most part untitled. Having featured tracks from ‘Marjaa…’ on mixes, and included the album in his picks of 2023, in early 2024 Tomas asked Mayssa to provide vocals for a track on his album ‘Brödföda’. Mayssa remembers, “Tomas asked me to choose one of the tracks he was working on. I was in Boston at the time, so I took a walk and chose a track. I wrote the lyrics at the public park, wondering if I was the only one around that was losing sleep over the genocide in Palestine and the war in South Lebanon. I went back to the apartment and recorded the vocals on my phone, while listening to the track on headphones. Tomas reworked it with the voice and sent it back. I liked it immediately.” Despite the geographical distance from Beirut to Uppsala, Sweden, where Tomas resides, Mayssa’s contribution sounds very much at home in Civilistjävel!’s atmospheric, contemplative sound-world. Tomas’ request was reciprocated by Mayssa soon after, resulting in the spectral, glassy ambience of ‘Etel, Kharita (Version)’. This was followed by an invitation to work on more tracks, which Tomas immediately embraced, intensively jamming out versions live to two-track tape in downtime between travelling. If not entirely dissimilar to his regular working practice, the immediacy of it was unusual. Much was improvised live with just a keyboard (not tethered to a grid), and a restricted set-up that largely forbade later edits - only the rhythm tracks are programmed. A sharp conceptual thinker and composer, Tomas takes creative liberties with Mayssa’s songs in a way that is deeply felt and sympathetically aligned, whilst unashamedly outside of the original context of the record. The voice is leaned into as an instrument, without the clear, specific details of language, and this axis provides an uncertain, amorphous footing - structure is often suggested or hinted at, before disappearing or collapsing into fog, and folding back into the message within the song. A somewhat unprecedented source for an album of versions, even those familiar with ‘Marjaa: The Battle of the Hotels’ may at points struggle to hear the songs these versions are rebuilt from, despite the vocal narratives remaining virtually intact. The light has shifted; eroded buildings are foregrounded; fragments of memories appear in chiaroscuro. Signs and signifiers have been replaced. Shorn of the original's warm guitar, ‘Baynana (Version)’ feels like an ominous visitation, the sun no longer visible. ‘Holiday Inn (March 21 to 29) (Version)’ is a molten, clattering invocation. The beat-less tracks nod towards the cold, otherworldly sound-scaping of late '90s isolationism. More propulsive and embodied, ‘Holiday Inn (January to March) (Version)’ and ‘Kharita (Dub)’ are strobing, iridescent techno - lithe, shifting and mutating with almost implausible finesse. A stunning addition to Civilistjävel!’s growing catalogue, ‘…(Versions)’ is a luminous counterpoint to ‘Marjaa…’, and a welcome reminder of how incredible that record remains.

Now the man behind it, Alastair Kelly, debuts a new label with none other than revered UK techno mainstay Ibrahim Alfa Jnr. He opens up with 'Component A' which is a moody melange of slow, broken dub beats and fizzing synths. There is further experimentation on 'Untitled B2 1' which pairs a churning dub rhythm with naive and innocent melodies and lots of lo-fi static. 'Entangled' ups the ante with the suggestion of a fast paced rhythm through a skeletal groove and the flip brings broken beat dub weight, meaning and percussive bass with a 2-step swagger then deep introspection on the closer. A classy EP that suggests this label will be well worth watching.

However, one group fully deserves all of these plaudits and many more besides as The Heptones are undoubtedly one of the most accomplished, significant and influential Jamaican vocal harmony trios. Amongst genuine lovers of Jamaican music their standing is beyond compare but, outside of the confines of reggae music, it is still nowhere near as assured. And, even with the benefit of hindsight, it is difficult to understand how and why, despite Island Records giving them a very similar promotional platform in the mid seventies, The Heptones never followed Bob Marley & The Wailers, Toots & The Maytals and Burning Spear into the realms of international recognition.

A sonic blend of street-soul, digi-dub, and downtempo. "Original Watercolour" explores the complexities of love, oneness, and intuition — themes that resonate deeply within the context of the history women have shared with what was once known as the 'ladies’ medium.'

The bi-coastal family trio - Ashleigh and Melissa Ball, better known as the Ball Sisters, alongside producer N1_SOUND - bring a fresh, genre-defying sound to the table with their latest 6-track album. Running just under 30 minutes, this immersive collection weaves together skipping beats, addictive bass lines, three-dimensional flute textures & emotional vocal melodies. This musical portrait is as ethereal as it is powerful, inviting the listener to get lost in its depths while celebrating the beauty of self-expression.

The opening track, “Original Watercolour,” takes you on a psychedelic trip-hop journey. From the first reverberous snare hit, you’re whisked away to a sonic wetland — lush and euphoric. The soft yet poignant soundscapes set the tone for the album, inviting us into a world where the boundaries between earth and music, reality and imagination, automatically seem to blur.

“Locked In 2 Love” offers a boogie-fueled bassline that pushes Teal into dance-floor territory with soaring flutes and rhythmic intricacies that make it impossible not to move - it’s a track that exemplifies the magic of Teal’s ability to craft both intimate and expansive musical landscapes. And then, there’s the hypnotic flow of “One In The Same,” where stacked vocal harmonies and mantra-esque lyrics transport you to a place that could easily be mistaken for a lost Soulquarians demo. It’s gentle yet unrelenting in its depth.

The second side of the album opens with “Sleep on It,” a track that immediately grabs attention with its dancehall-driven rhythm. Ashleigh Ball's vocals set the stage for a song that’s both introspective and emotionally charged, yet unmistakably rooted in groove. The phased-out bassline creates an almost hypnotic atmosphere. Pulling the listener into a mood of contemplation - matching the restless, sleepless night that Ball describes. As the song progresses, this groove builds in intensity, culminating in an explosive ending that mirrors the emotional release of a long-held frustration.

"Original Watercolour" is more than just an album - it’s a meditation on the interconnectedness of life and art. “Frog Kingdom,” the longest and only instrumental track creates a contemplative space that builds upon the themes introduced earlier. It feels like a sequel to their earlier work, "Frog Legacy" from their debut "Bluish Green" 12”, expanding on the familiar sound with even more complex layers.

Yet the real emotional power of the record lies in its closing track, “Can’t Shake the Feeling”. Simple in structure but profound in impact, this song captures a deep yearning and understanding - that everything, from the ecosystems we inhabit to the relationships we nurture and the art we create, is fundamentally interconnected. As the track crescendos in a falsetto peak, it becomes clear that the album is a reflection of both the world around us and the personal journey each member of the band has embarked upon to get to this point.

Just as the medium of watercolor has been traditionally linked to women artists, Teal carries this legacy into the modern musical landscape, blending the richness of history with a unique forward-thinking perspective. The album feels like both a celebration of the past and a bold declaration of a path forward - one that welcomes anyone ready to join in and shape the future of the art form.

The beauty of Teal’s work is that it feels familiar, while simultaneously offering something new and refreshing. "Original Watercolour" doesn’t just push musical boundaries; it redefines them, offering a lush and textured soundtrack for those willing to listen closely.

In a world that often feels over-saturated, "Original Watercolour" stands as a reminder of the power of simplicity, intuition, and connection. Teal’s debut album invites you to experience something both deeply personal and universally understood. The landscapes they create are vivid, yet soft, grounding yet expansive. With each track, Teal’s music reflects the interconnectedness of all things - a truly unique piece of work in the world of experimental soul and dub adjacent electronic music.

Rising and falling. We all live in the same pond. Peace to all.

Add to that some keen pop fundamentals and dazzling vocals and you've a bit under-the-radar winner that upon first listens, seems like its got loads of legs. Might end up one of the surprise hits of 2025... (you heard it here first ;) )

Originally released in 1979, "Spiritual Sound" lives up to its name, a soaring, triumphant album, six tracks of spirit magic from Guadeloupe.

Telluric, intense, terribly alive, the gwoka drums of Guadeloupe carry the identity of a painful and fervent island. Marked forever by the crime of slavery, Guadeloupe's créolité cherishes the ka drums and their natural environment: the low-pitched boula drum with male goatskin, the high-pitched soloist makè drum with female goatskin, the chacha, ti bwa, triangle, calabash and other percussion instruments that surround them, and the voices - the fiery, proud, timbred, urgent voices of the gwoka.

This album is also a legend for its voices: in his then dazzling youth, singer Lukuber Séjor was one of the first gwoka artists to largely feminize the chorus of répondè, who converse with his text delivered in a straight and powerful voice.

And everything here sets new standards. In 1979, Mizik Filamonik - Spiritual Sound proclaimed a spiritual patriotism of ferocious intensity. The album by Lukuber Séjor - whose spelling alone is a battle - sets out to give Guadeloupe the intangible weapons of self-respect and self-knowledge, through a singular practice of traditional music.

The genesis of gwoka music is less straightforward than one might imagine... The drums performed the servile task of accompanying the work of slaves in the fields and during the “corvées” imposed by the administration, before being freely practiced by the common people after the abolition of 1848. At the heart of the conviviality of the Guadeloupeans furthest from the cities - geographically and socially - the gwoka drums come out for carnival, funeral wakes and neighborhood celebrations, but also during strikes, fits of anger and armed vigils of the riots and revolts that have punctuated the island's history. For generations, governors of the colony and then the prefects of the overseas department of Guadeloupe have been viewing the gwoka as a potential for turbulence and a threat to public order.

But as the Beatlesmania, “chanson engagée” and rock revolutions unfolded in Europe, young people turned to the drums of mizik a vié nèg (“bad negro music”, in Creole), which Guadeloupeans had learned to despise by following the “assimilation” process advocated by the school system and most of the political class. At the end of the sixties, in a Guadeloupe mourning the deadly repression of the May 1967 social movement, they played traditional music, refusing to wrap it up in tourist prettiness and madras folk costumes. Instinctively, they played a rough and contemporary gwoka, led by the incendiary Guy Konkèt. This was the era of decisive 45 rpm records such as Robert Loyson's Kann a la richès, which brought to light the fieriest words of union rallies.

At his home in Sainte-Anne, Lukuber Séjor played with flautist Olivier Vamur and his brother Claude Vamur, who cobbled together a drum kit from tin crockery and became, a few years later, the most influential drummer in Kassav'.

These were the years of the Bumidom program, when young Guadeloupeans were encouraged to emigrate to mainland France. At the age of twenty, Lukuber Séjor embarked on the liner Irpinia, disembarking at Le Havre and taking the train to the Gare Saint-Lazare - the route taken by thousands of young West Indians who went on to study or looked for work, all the while trying to maintain a link with their homeland. In this case, it's at the Antony university residence, where Lukuber played the drum and participated in a thousand gwoka updates and aggiornamentos, while exile reinforced the need for a spiritual link with the native land.

In 1978, Guy Konkèt played at the Salle Wagram, a historic event for West Indian music. After serving as répondè - i.e. backing vocalist - on one of his home-recorded albums, Lukuber joined his live band. Little by little, he became one of the key artists on a circuit parallel to French show business. At a student party in Caen, he met a young woman from Martinique who, at the time, was more motivated by her ambitions as a visual artist than by her vocation as a musician. Her name was Jocelyne Béroard and, a few years before she plunged into the Kassav' adventure and became the greatest West Indian singer of her generation, she designed the cover of Lukuber Séjor's LP.

This ambition was obvious and imposed its will. A more or less regular band was formed, with Roger Raspail, Rudy Mompière and Éric Danquin on ka drums, Claude Vamur on ti bwa, Olivier Vamur and Françoise Lancréot on flutes and Annick Noël on keyboards. Lukuber Séjor is set on wanting to extend the gwoka palette to other instruments, as the jazz-rock revolution opens a thousand new doors. Annick Noël will play a wide range of timbres and textures on electric piano and synthesizer. Another novelty: the répondè are two men and two women, Roger Raspail, Olivier Vamur, Françoise Lancréot and Maryann Mathéus ...

Mizik Filamonik - Spiritual Sound is a self-production in which the singer and leader sank all his savings, allowing him no more than a single day in the studio. The first side is more of a musical manifesto, with the first two tracks, Éritage and Penn é plézi, being instrumentals. The third, Son, forcefully celebrates the need for Guadeloupeans to connect with the gwoka. In fact, Jocelyne Béroard's cover shows a tambouyé in the shadow of a cloudy sky, against which a radiant sun is rising and whose light will soon flood the entire landscape. The silhouette and face of this man strongly evoke the immense Vélo, master of the ka, rejected at the time on the fringes of society.

The second side of the LP is surprising. Formally, three tracks are explicitly linked like the three parts of a triptych. Primyé voyaj evokes the appalling tribulation of Africans deported as slaves to Guadeloupe; dézyèm voyaj speaks of the Bumidom program and the economic, political and social forces driving young Guadeloupeans towards the mirage of prosperity in France; twazyèm voyaj closes the cycle with the emigrants' return from Europe after years away from their island...

This gwoka, obsessed with the need to save Guadeloupe spiritually, appeals far beyond the politicized audience. Mizik Filamonik - Spiritual Sound instantly became a classic, although Lukuber Séjor never really made a career for himself as a musician.

After all, the album was released in 1980, with no promotional resources in France or Guadeloupe - and therefore no concerts. The thirty-two-year-old author, composer and performer made his own third trip back to Guadeloupe. He set up a small woodworking business, which he lost in Hurricane Hugo in 1989. His other activity, teaching in a medical-educational institute, became the core of his professional life. He continued to be an active campaigner - a campaigner for the Creole language, a campaigner for the reawakening of identity, a campaigner for special education, a campaigner for a thousand causes that he ignited with his generous and perceptive enthusiasm, such as the defense of breadfruit fries...

Of course, the use of Penn é plézi as the theme tune for Radio Guadeloupe's funeral notices from 1980 to 1992 kept him in the collective memory, but he continues to sing and compose sporadically, as with his all-female

vocal group Vwapoulouéka... Still convinced that music is a means of liberating the spirit, he continues the journey of a young man eager to deploy the power of Creole music and language.

NYC quintet Slow Fiction release this limited edition 7" on Speedy Wunderground as part of the Speedy Singles series.

'When' finds the band sprinting toward a finish line, willing themselves forward across an urgent and confrontational three minutes. "You are a clock without a face, You are a mouth without the taste", come the opening words from vocalist Julia Vassallo, as the band wrestles with the idea that something is missing from the world. When's precise, controlled intensity is the sound of Slow Fiction attempting to forge some calm from the chaos of finding yourself in a downward spiral, looking out on a world that can often let you down.

Vassallo comments: "I think everyone has had a moment where their expectation of the world, a relationship, the audience they are performing for falls short, and it sends you into a wild spiral downwards. Losing faith feels so desperate, like falling into a pit of snakes. And the snakes all have faces that seem familiar, and they're talking, but the words are all garbled. I guess this was trying to get to the bottom of that pit of disillusionment, or maybe get out of it altogether."

Slow Fiction is a landmine of sound, inspired by the raw, sweeping fuzz of the likes of Sonic Youth and The Jesus and Mary Chain. Familiar elements of noughties era guitar shine through, confronted with cutting contemporary angst to create a nostalgic yet intoxicating sound.

                                                                                                                    TRACK LISTING

“Too Many days without thinking” was their fourth and some would say their most important record. It was recorded between 1994 and 1996 in Los Angeles, San Francisco and finally in New York with producer & mixer Kurt Ralske ( Ultra Vivid Scene).

                                                                                                                      Carla Thomas

                                                                                                                        Alex

Daughter of Swords is the solo project of North Carolina singer-songwriter Alex Sauser-Monnig (they/she), who has also released music with bands Mountain Man and The A’s. Their solo debut, 'Dawnbreaker', was a hushed folk record released in 2019; in the years since, Sauser-Monnig found a new understanding of self, personally and musically. Across the last several years, Daughter of Swords’ music has grown thornier, an unpredictable and knotty tangle of technicolor synths, heady guitar, bubbling rhythms, a sheen enveloping songs about raw human intensity writ large – crushes, desire, anger, alienation, the horrors of late-stage capitalism, the cascading paradigm shifts it seems we’re all hurtling toward.

Enter 'Alex', Daughter of Sword’s sinewy new record. Recorded at Betty’s (Sylvan Esso’s studio), 'Alex' was built out by Sauser-Monnig’s longtime friends/collaborators Amelia Meath (Sylvan Esso, Mountain Man, The A’s), Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak, Flock of Dimes), Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso, Made of Oak), TJ Maiani (Weyes Blood, Neneh Cherry), and Caleb Wright (Hippo Campus, Samia). There’s a sharp cerebral tension between the stories at the core of these songs and the electrifying, playful buoyancy of the sound, the wink with which Sauser-Monnig can deliver a withering observation.

Reckoning with pleasure-seeking, boundary-breaking, and their place in the world, 'Alex' heralds a fresh chapter of exploration and liberation for Sauser-Monnig, yielding the truest representation of their identity via song yet. A reassessment of inner systems, and relationships of all sorts — with art and creativity, with other humans, with gender – happened in tandem with Sauser-Monnig’s interrogation of the late-capitalist culture that makes life for working artists an inequitable grind. Forced out of their habitual ways of thinking and being, Sauser-Monnig found new energy in dissolving old limitations—be they about the music business or their concept of gender—and exploring in uncharted territory. Their priority became maximizing the mood of each track, borne out in Alex’s layers of synthetic textures and unorthodox flourishes.

                                                                                                                          STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Angular bursts of overdriven guitar and looped noises underpin the smoothly melodic vocals of Alex Sauser-Monnig, and result in something that's clearly influenced as much by art rock and folk as it is indie music. A hugely dynamic selection of wonderfully hummable oddities and soaring chorsues.

Starting off with the uptempo stomper "So Soft So Sweet", the big sing-along hook, searing synth solo, and reinforced drums make this a perfect secret weapon for your next disco set. On the flip, "Mishugina Mambo" offers up a heavy duty Latin rhythm workout. Inspired by the classic Sofrito Specials series, the hypnotic guitar and roaring horns soar over driving percussion and pulsing drums that dare everyone in the room to remain still. Universal Cave are known for their namesake record label and have also released edits and remixes on Emotional Rescue, Pleasure Of Love, and now Studs. Made on the other side of a relationship where she often felt marginalized, 'Sweetness' felt like the right project for the 25-year-old Atlanta-based singer-songwriter to rethink her creative approach and work solely from her own lyrical and melodic ideas. The result of this process was a darker, more texturally expansive record than its predecessor, full of heart-rending songs about pushing back against self-blame and doubt. From its heavy-duty sonics to its naturally flowing melodies to its emotionally generous lyrics, every element of Sweetness exudes confidence, capturing Harvey relishing raw creativity and trusting her inclinations. The record takes place within that moment all artists wait for: when their “voice” becomes so clear, they realize they can just open their mouth and start speaking in it.

Freed from the nagging insecurity that she couldn’t be a songwriter without playing an instrument - she cites The National’s Matt Berninger as an inspiration - Harvey began 'Sweetness' by recording full-length acapella voice memos. To find a backdrop for the vocals, Harvey delved into her diverse, lifelong set of musical reference points, from the country and Top 40 pop she grew up on in small-town Georgia to the later favorites that expanded her idea of what songwriting could achieve: Elliott Smith, Lana Del Rey, Yo La Tengo, and more. With the help of Asheville-based producer/co-writer Alex Farrar and additional co-writers Tom Sinclair and Holden Fincher, Harvey pinpointed a sweet spot between shoegaze, dream-pop, and pop-rock anthems from the turn of the millennium.

Mixing the playful with the devastating, Harvey coasts on cathartic waves of emotion and monster hooks throughout Sweetness—a momentum which is guaranteed to push her to the front of the ranks of today’s most fearlessrising indie-pop singer-songwriters.

Perfectly written melodic masterpieces, and an instrumental aesthetic that hits just right.

Swami John Reis is back with his second LP in eight months. Time To Let You Down is a savage blast of junk shoppe punk that kicks you in the ding ding. This eleven track LP is chock full of fist pumpers, head bumpers, stinky dumpers, meaty thumpers and toe stumpers. The tempos are often breakneck and the dense arrangements tumble like bricks into hot cheese. The undeniable sonic girth barges at will into lathered ear tubes allowing these barbaric anthems to echo in hollow domes. Feel the whip crack break skin on the acne scarred backs of our cultural oppressors. The sound is tough. The songs are a bitch. Incite your expectations with the single “Fed To The Dogs” or the title track. Salty leather and wobbly chain link fences can’t contain its rebel intent.

The record was produced by John Reis, engineered and mixed by Ben Moore and mastered by Dave Gardner.

'8 Hours' opens up with the sort of spine-tingling vocals and pensive pads that take any floor higher. 'Never Leave You' is a percussive groove with an infectious sense of skip and 'M' Pon' then picks things up with chanting vocals and warrior leads next to rousing horns full of soul. 'O' Wey' closes out with steel-plated drums and soft shakers bringing plenty of late-night magic.

Steven Wilson releases his eighth studio album, 'The Overview'. The two track, forty-two-minute album is his most audacious to date, inspired by the “overview effect” experienced by astronauts looking back at the Earth from space.

'The Overview' sees Wilson return to expansive, progressive music, a genre he helped redefine and repopularise with both his solo and Porcupine Tree releases. The two wildly ambitious tracks are each made up of distinctive musical sections that flow from one to the other, playing out as unique and continuous pieces. Wilson’s 21st-century progressive music updates the classic ‘prog’ musical palette to incorporate everything from glistening electronics to post-rock and beyond, which brings the genre right into the beating heart of the current musical landscape.

The concept album also isn't something Wilson is averse to (If you haven't heard Porupine Tree's 'Sky Moves Sideways' or 'Up The Downstair' you need to) but rarely has his work been as overwhelmingly evocative and as beautifully poised as this. The Man's a genius.

Deft, a familiar favourite within the Hooversound family having released two EP’s on the label, is no stranger to breaking boundaries when it comes to sonic stereotypes. Enter: Manni Dee. Another equally exciting name on the London circuit who is an advocate for non-conformism. Between them they have released on Exit, 1985 Music, Critical and Fabric Originals - their style has been recognised globally and continues to grow. Both creatives bring something refreshingly new to the table, whether it’s with their amalgam style of music making, their esteemed record platforms (Silk + Steel, B4 Music) or their DJ sets - it makes perfect sense for the duo to unite on their vision.

Their latest offering combines their boundaryless artistic style of forward-thinking atmospheric production on an EP named ‘Swamp Season’. The two producers play with different elements of club music and hip-hop by blurring genres and throwing the rule book out of the window. The end result highlights how Deft and Manni Dee have excelled once again across five bass-fuelled tracks which will expand your perspective on electronic music.

On their single, the duo said “‘Charged’ was the last track we wrote for the EP. Rooted in the simplicity of 00's hip hop instrumentals, on steroids, adapted with the wider electronic sphere in mind. Inspired by the past and present, facing the future.”

Deft and Manni Dee also explained how they came to collaborate; “We've always shared the same taste in hip hop and electronic music, and also share a studio together underneath FOLD in Canning Town, so it just made sense for us to make a record together. Our process was creatively free with no preconceptions, having worked together remotely and together across multiple studios around the world. The result has created a new and exciting avenue for us both, opening the floodgates to eliminate boundaries. It's Swamp Season.”

Moreish Idols have carved out a unique position for themselves in the burgeoning London scene. Whereas their debut material showcased a restless, jerky, jagged and rhythmically centred sound that bore the influence of energetic post-punk, their second EP showcased an entirely different side to the band. This evolution saw the group stitch together a looser constellation of ideas, combining swooning tremolo guitars, prickly melodic riddles, erudite saxophone improvs, and flexible rhythms, sounding like Watery, Domestic-era Pavement one second and the bucolic Canterbury Scene the next, but always, always like Moreish Idols most of all.

'All In The Game' is filled with Dan Carey’s eccentric production ideas, largely inspired by the concept of time. For the title-track, Carey asked Humphreys to play the same saxophone part at different tempos, recording onto tape which was itself moving at different speeds. He also suggested splitting one of the demo tracks in half, with the first half played as the opening track 'Ambergrin', and the second as the slower, less saturated outro 'Time’s Wasting': designed to sound like a memory of the former. A nod to their debut EP “Float” – which can be played on a continuous loop – the return of the track in this more ethereal, ghostly form captures how ideas, stories and observations are changed by the process of remembering.

Like aliens have discovered the Black Keys and are trying to play them on their own instruments.

The album sees a collaboration between the European post-punk electronic discipline of Immersion meeting the American ambient country band SUSS and their big sky, new world, Americana cinematic soundscapes to create a perfect Nanocluster! It’s a perfect combination that fits the Nanocluster vision. Immersion’s open-minded approach sees their music spark new textures with the American band who were once described by UNCUT magazine as “Eno’s Apollo Atmospheres crash-landed in America’s Sonoran Desert,” and by Pitchfork as “Neither rawboned nor ramshackle … their elegantly composed brand of ambient country stands as tall and clean as a brand-new pair of cowboy boots.” Suss are composed of veteran musicians Pat Irwin (the B-52s, Raybeats, 8 Eyed Spy), Bob Holmes (numun, Rubber Rodeo), and Jonathan Gregg (the Combine, the Linemen), SUSS combine Pedal Steel, National Steel Guitar, Mandolin, Harmonica, Baritone Guitar, and the Harmonium, which they weave with synthesizers and loops to create their big, lonesome sound.

On their second, ‘Conditions II’, they explored themes of nostalgia, love, pressure and loss on a four-track EP that combines techno with industrial post-punk and indie-rock. Their upcoming third EP, aptly named 'Conditions III', ends the trilogy that launched their career, fusing elements of heavy guitar music, electronica and breakbeat into a euphoric and frightening finished project. Recorded against the backdrop of bleak landscapes and Nordic vistas in remote northern Iceland, Chalk have shown another evolution in their already confrontational sound.

Winners of the ‘Best Live Act’ at the NI Music Prize in late 2023, Chalk have proved worthy of this title with sold-out headlines in Ireland, the UK, Netherlands and France, festival appearances stretching from the west coast of Ireland to Vienna and Sicily (as the second most booked band of ESNS 2024) and support slots for IDLES, SPRINTS and PVA under their belt.

Anthony and Dave first came across each other when working with Shabaka Hutchings during Covid broadcasts, and then after Anthony performed some poems on Dave’s 2023 album ‘I Came From Love’, the seeds of collaboration were sown.

Early writing sessions for this record took place in 2022, around Mount Blanc in France. Anthony was away touring with long-time collaborator, Jason Yarde. Ideas were a little thin and they found themselves somewhat repeating previous work resulting in Anthony rethinking things a little, and so entered Dave Okumu.

LP opener ‘Satellite’ is a fine example of how this new partnership pans out. New musicians have been enlisted; Dan See (Drums), Aviram Barath (Synths), Nick Ramm on Fender Rhodes and Byron Wallen (Trumpet). Add to that the mighty vocal power house of Eska and we have a whole new dimension of soul and depth, to carry Anthony’s statements. “You build a wall, we go under, you build it higher, we go higher, like a satellite” .

On the album's second single, ‘Tony’ - there’s a nod to all drummers and creators of African rhythms, from the point of view of Afrobeat legend Tony Allen. Highlighting this is drummer’s drummer Richard Spaven as Dave’s choice of skin beater. He successfully reminds us that Tony was someone who understood the real power of rhythm and how it is used to unite people.

As well as the new musicians on this LP, Dave Okumu played all the guitars and used the studio as his tool. On ‘A Juba for Janet’ - a poem to Joseph’s mother, and a track so bass heavy that it feels as though it could sit in a deep dubstep set in Plastic People days, - Anthony’s voice reaches straight down your ear canals next to dark drums, huge synths and delayed saxophone stabs from Colin Webster. Slightly more introspective verses on ‘An Afrofuturist Poem’ see Dave’s beats show off the real future sound of this record, kalimba, moog bass and guitars all played by the man himself.

Mellower and deeper moments are also present, Anthony’s cryptic yet informative storytelling is at its absolute best on ‘Churches Of Sound (The Benetiz-Rojo)’ - Caribbean and Windrush history reeled off alongside a linear musical timeline of Black music in the diaspora.

A reminder that this body of work is first of 2 volumes, ‘Rowing Up River To Get Our Names Back’ is not a follow up to Anthony’s previous album, but more a development of his 2006 novel, ‘The African Origins of UFOs’ a book where experimental elements of afro-futurism, metafiction, science fiction, surrealism, mythology are rewritten in Anthony’s innovative language. Look out for Volume 2 also coming in 2025.

With the release of her first EP “A Comforting Notion” back in 2023, Heartworms was pigeonholed as post-punk, but in the intervening years, she’s taken a huge leap forward in sound and spread into new sonic territories. There are definitely post punk tendencies on Glutton For Punishment, but that’s mixed in with more propulsive rhythms that recall the goth-synth of Depeche Mode and on B-side opener “Warplane” there’s a hint of LCD Soundsystem in the skittering off kilter rhythms.

Jojo’s vocals vie from a gently brooding to full on ferociousness adding to the drama and intensity of the sound.

Along with longtime collaborator Dan Carey, she’s created an arresting, glitchy pop-noir album that sounds like nothing else around. Love it!

Rich industrial percussion and soaring vocals lift it from the shadowy lows into what is undoubtedly her melodic zenith to date.

The Album continues the inca babies explosive exploration of Goth punk and trash blues sharing space with death rock grunge and cautionary ballads. Yeah!

It's good, lots of those trademark Swift choruses and huge, cathartic synth lines that back up her powerful anthemic vocals. Everyone was very happy, BUT then two hours later there was ANOTHER part of the album released digitally! It too is really good, if anything for my money it's even better than the original (sorry Taylor). All 31 songs of it are presented here, alongside four lovely acoustic numbers. The acoustic version of 'Fortnight' feat Post Malone. is particularly brilliant. All pressed on clear vinyl. Lovely.

Devotees of Richard Swift know that his catalog is sprawly and imaginative, packed with as many finely-honed stone cold classics as one-take, madman experiments. The gems take all shapes and sizes, and while it doesn’t phase the diehard, it does make Swift’s music tricky to introduce to the newcomer: Where to start? What makes the cut? How many crooners? How many wild ones? It’s with this in mind that Secretly Canadian presents '4 Hits & A Miss', our humble swing at gathering the forty-seven minutes and fourteen songs that can initiate the uninitiated. If you don’t know Richard Swift, let the incomparable Kevin Morby catch you up: There’s an old boy-scout myth I heard about as a child where, if you put the right person in the middle of the forest, armed with only a Swiss Army knife, they could build you a chapel.

When I think back on this myth I end up thinking of Richard Swift who, if dropped in the middle of the forest with only a $10 Radio Shack microphone, would somehow construct a studio and within that studio build you a chapel of sound. In fact, he essentially did exactly this at his own National Freedom studio in the middle of the Oregon woods, in a town called Cottage Grove where he recorded countless hours of both his own and other people’s music.

Those chapels of sound will, and I have witnessed it already, awe and inspire generations to come - in the same way that those stone chapels of early Europe do. Each leaves people bewildered and wondering: how was something so massive and so beautiful constructed with such minimal and archaic tools - and in Richard’s case, so quickly?

Once they’ve passed away, most artists seem to finally rest, their catalogs resting eternally beside them. But Richard, from somewhere in the great beyond, seems restless, and the work he began down here on earth continues. His last album, 'The Hex', was released only a few months after his untimely death in 2018 and now, with '4 Hits and A Miss', we have a collection of his most beloved songs all in one place, as well as a new unheard ever before track 'Common Law', recorded around 2012.

Whether you’re a casual fan or a Swift purist, '4 Hits & A Miss' is either a perfect starting place or a destination for us devoted fans to find, yet again, something new to awe and inspire. Like a hidden room inside his already impressive chapel, there’s always something new to discover from our beloved friend and hero, the late great Richard Swift.

                                                                                                                                                Enjoy.

To what extent the experience can be reconstituted is uncertain. Whatever the case, 'Snow Beneath the Belly of a White Swan' is the mother lode of Basho live recordings. On these five discs we are treated to some remarkable pieces that have never been published, as well as surprising renditions of old favourites. Compiled from Basho’s sprawling personal collection of master tapes (discovered during the production of Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho), and potentially encompassing his entire career, this edition represents a live companion to the studio set Song of the Avatars: The Lost Master Tapes (Tompkins Square, 2020). While the tapes have (in the main) survived incredibly well over the decades (against the odds), please note that some previously unpublished tracks with subpar to poor fidelity have been included.

Less than a year after forming Disgusting Sisters, the Anglo-French sibling duo and self-appointed "Gucci Beavis and Butt-Head" arrive enraged and unhinged with 'Killing It', a song that launches a middle finger sky-high to unsolicited advice and judgement. Embracing a healthy nihilistic streak and a wicked scepticism for the Live, Laugh Love pack, 'Killing It' lays down a marker for the pair's witty, blunt dissections of life lived increasingly under a lens, continually subject to the opinion of strangers. It's the sound of sisters grinning through that judgement and laughing all the way to the afters.

Given early live outings across this summer - including at Reading & Leeds, Left of the Dial, Pitchfork Paris and The Great Escape First 50 last week - 'Killing It' seems destined to soundtrack basement indie shows and sticky-floored club nights alike. Disgusting Sisters explain the song some more: "Killing It is a song about owning your own life so completely that even if you chose to wreck it, you’re still in control - because in the end, the personal freedom to live on your own terms is what really matters."

Inspired by the destructive depravity of Harmony Korine's Trash Humpers, and Lars von Trier's provocative 1998 film The Idiots, the song's video is the perfect visual accompaniment, as the sisters take their burned out car to a dump on the outskirts of Paris and smash it to pieces. They're destroying something, yes, but in turn creating something new in their own disgusting image. They're not just killing it on this debut, they're - as the song goes - "Choking it / Clutching it tight by the nuts and ripping it... F*** yeah"

The title track, which translates as 'night on the Riviera', is just that - a humid late-night house cut with some erect female vocals. 'Tutto Un Deja Vu' cuts loose with freewheeling melodies and blissed-out pads, and 'Magica' then goes deep. Italian producer Franz Scala blends 80s vibes with modern sensibilities like few others as he shows on his remix of the title cut, then Sparkling Attitude and Gledd add their own fresh versions.

I personally really dig Franz Scala's moody italo tinged version of one of the tracks... If you're into Peggy Gou, or you enjoyed Aili & Transistorcake's EP 'Dansu' from a few years back this record is definitely one to check out!

At the same time, it's a new kind of adventure for the beloved Pennsylvania band of high school friends Karen Peris, Don Peris, and Mike Bitts, having both an expansive, cinematic quality and the strange, lo- fi beauty of a newly discovered vintage folk album.

"It's like it was recorded at Western Electric in the 60's, and makes me think of Vashti Bunyan or Sibylle Baier, but also has these emotional bursts of orchestration and drums and harmony coming in - the sound of the innocence mission never stops getting richer", writes one early listener and friend.
