What Makes A Man Start Fires? - 2025 Repress

Originally released in 1983, What Makes A Man Start Fires? is the second studio album and fifth release by the Minutemen. At almost twice the length of their previous album, "The Punch Line," the Minutemen's songs began surpassing the two-minute mark. For what would be the only time on a Minutemen release, all of the lead vocals were sung exclusively by guitarist/vocalist D. Boon, although bassist Mike Watt does contribute backing vocals.

Flip Your Wig - 2025 Repress

Flip Your Wig is the fourth studio album by band Hüsker Dü, released in September 1985 via SST Records.

The band had wanted to produce their previous album New Day Rising, but SST insisted on sending long-time label producer Spot. With Flip Your Wig the band was finally allowed to self-produce. Recording took place over several sessions in the band's hometown of Minneapolis from March to June 1985, by far the longest the band had spent in the studio. The cleaner production complemented the more melodic songs, still performed with heavily distorted guitars in a high-powered manner.

Mould said, "There's more emphasis on the vocals. They're a little more out-front. The production is the main thing. Clearer vocals and less emphasis on guitar. The crazy solos... I think we're a little out of that now."

Guitarist Bob Mould and drummer Grant Hart each wrote roughly half the songs, which continued the band's trend toward power pop and away from the fast, noisy hardcore punk of their earliest material.

In My Head - 2025 Repress

In My Head is the sixth studio album by American punk band Black Flag. It was released in 1985 on SST Records, and was their final studio album before their breakup in 1986.

After building a reputation for confrontational hardcore punk, late-era Black Flag turned to a more experimental, heavy metal-inflected sound, in particular on their last two albums. Greg Ginn intended In My Head to be his first solo album. The cover is a collage of six drawings by Raymond Pettibon.

                      My War - 2025 Repress

My War, the second studio album by Black Flag, polarized fans on its release in 1984 over the record’s B-side, which they slowed down to a heavier Black Sabbath vibe. Polarizing, considering their first album Damaged earned them a reputation for being one of the biggest hardcore punk acts of the 80’s.

The line-up had shrunk from five to three members: Henry Rollins (Vocals), Bill Stevenson (Drums), and co-founder Greg Ginn (Guitar, Bass). Ginn played bass under the name “Dale Nixon” after he kicked out Chuck Dukowski, another founding Black Flag member.

My War had a huge influence on the hardcore-meets-Sabbath sounds of the Melvins, Mudhoney, and Nirvana.

                          Intolerance - 2025 Repress

Intolerance is the first solo album by Grant Hart, formerly of the band Husker Du. It was released on December 12, 1989.

Grant Hart's first solo album was originally release in Dec 1989, and was something of a departure from the raucous intensity of his former band Husker Du. It felt like a deeply personal album, with songs referencing drug addicition and the break up of Husker Du.

Former band mate Bob Mould's debut 'Workbook' which was release around the same time probably got more attention but this is still a really good album, and the reworking of '2541' which had been released as a single earlier is worth the price alone.

Land Speed Record - 2025 Repress

Land Speed Record is the debut full-length record by Hüsker Dü, released in January 1982. It was recorded live on August 15, 1981, at the 7th Street Entry, a venue in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The album is a fast and furious hardcore workout that bears almost no resemblance to the melodic post-hardcore that the band became known for in the mid '80s. The title has a triple meaning, referring to 1) the band's ability to play as fast as they could (there are 17 songs crammed into 26½ minutes) 2) their penchant for [amphetamine] pills and 3) the play-on-words that it is a "record," an album.

                              Metal Circus - 2025 Repress

Recorded and released in 1983, at the peak of their hardcore punk period, where speed, rage and intensity still ruled, but with increased melodicism seeping-in, especially on Grant Hart’s songs. Seven tracks of sonic perfection (with three other outtakes used for compilation contributions, and Standing By The Sea put on hold till appearing on Zen Arcade, half a year later) featuring Bob Mould guitar work at its speed-driven, open-stringed, best.

                                                  STAFF COMMENTS

Laura says: One of my favourite albums of all time, similar to it's predecessor If'N, it melds folk / country with the tight musicianship and punk ethos of Mike Watt and George Hurley's previous band The Minutemen along with unusual almost jazzy time signatures and fluid, funky bass. Their sound was hard to define: a little too angular and at times folky to fit with the grunge scene that was rising up around them, put too rocky for the country folk scene. In some respects If'N and fROMOHIO were ahead of their time, as a few years later, the release of Uncle Tupelo's "No Depression" LP would kick start an explosion of alt-country / Americana bands who were much closer to their sound.

                                                  If'N - 2025 Repress

Following the death of D Boon, ex-Minutemen, Mike Watt and George Hurley formed fIREHOSE along with George Hurley. If'n is their second album, originally released in 1987.

By this their second album, they'd really found their sound. Of course they still maintained the punk energy and tight musicianship of The Minutemen, but now included a folk / country influence, angular jazzy time signatures and funky basslines, creating a sound like nothing else around at the time.
