Scruniversal's sub label Tunes Delivery invites Moscow scene veteran Leonid Lipelis to don his Beard In Dust moniker for their third instalment, one which he dips into various different eras of dance history for inspiration. There's a distinctly late 80s feel to opening tune 'Music of the U', complete with sampled bell stabs and the kind of beats that wouldn't be out of place on an S'Express or early Coldcut house affair. 'The Armenian Break' and 'City of Love' look back even further, back to the female-fronted disco efforts of the 70s, the latter adding a touch of Balearic flourishes. 'Abstractish P' circles around some serene arpeggios, with rave whistles and, as it progresses, twisting guitar notes, lending it an individual air, while closer 'RoRyaRe' nods to ExCel-era 808 State with some nice bleepery before settling into more progressive headnodding territory and some distinctive synth play.

Scruscru has launched a new label called Tunes Delivery and it is back with another banger here in the form of LTF's Fine Tuning album. It comes hot on the heels of some sublime Soviet jazz-funk sample madness on previous works and is another production masterclass. These are deep-cut funk sounds with cooling organ chords, hints of Money Mark vibes and psyched-out synths, wah-wah guitars and plenty of rawness to keep things authentic and timeless. The jazzy flutes of 'Bokeh' make it one of our favourites here but there isn't a single bad jam, truth be told.

STAFF COMMENTS

Mine says: I don't usually find myself enjoying jazz funk very often I have to admit, but this offering from LTF has got me hooked. BIG TIP!!

Force Majeure

Without doubt one of the most exciting bands in Australia right now, Delivery present their second album titled 'Force Majeure' – a vital and concise record which thrills with its direct simplicity and excitement, recalling the likes of Parquet Courts or early Modern Lovers.

The twelve-track battering ram of an album, from Melbourne’s effortlessly cool five-piece garage punk heroes, builds hugely on the promise that their 2022 lockdown-born debut album 'Forever Giving Handshakes' showed. Already with an enviable pedigree, their debut attracted fans from Henry Rollins (who has played almost the whole catalogue on his KCRW show) to Rolling Stone Australia (Top 10 albums 2022) through old school DIY word of mouth; Delivery are that rare thing, a true band’s band and a fan’s band simultaneously.

'Force Majure' is Delivery’s first album for Heavenly Recordings, a label with a long history of championing young Australian bands, from The Vines to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Confidence Man.

Across the whole record four voices sing, walls of guitars bite and scratch, the rhythm section locks behind them in perfect time while the listener grabs on for dear life and just tries to keep hold.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Stabs of distorted guitar, athletic chord changes and beautifully produced, crisp melodies throughout on this superb mix of classic punk rock and modern, roaring indie. Another superb Heavenly release.

Tunes Delivery is a sub-label of Scruscru's Scruniversa and now it enters into the world with a fantastic first offering in the form of this six-track various artists EP. 'Hotmood' opens up with the feel-good disco-funk of 'Just Tonight,' Scruscru keeps it real with 'Funky Flute' which is a nice languid instrumental and Frank Virgilio up the ante with some big horn-laced grooves. The flip side then comes on strong with three more brilliantly musical grooves that brim with catchy riffs and fresh disco-infused rhythms. A great start to what is sure to be a great label.

    STAFF COMMENTS

Matt says: Tunes Delivery open their tenure with six solid tracks of modern disco decadence. If you liked Tiger & Woods, PBR Streetgang, Toytonics and such like - this one's for you!
