Thee Sinseers

Love Stories

Catching up with Thee Sinseers ahead of their new Colemine Records release, 'Love Stories', one thing becomes abundantly clear: this is not an LP that explores a neat and tidy love story. It isn't interested in the happy ending. It's interested in everything that comes before it, after it, and in spite of it.

On this LP, the band leaned into earthier instrumentation — standup bass, guitars run through amplifiers for a warmer sixties-adjacent tone — pulling inspiration from wherever it presented itself, even the most unlikely of places. It's that cross-genre thinking that Quiñones sees as the record's defining quality. "It didn't feel like we were making soul music at any point," he says. "It felt like we were making our music."

The band sought to capture something more honest than a highlight reel — showcasing the highs and lows of romantic relationships while expanding the frame to include the familial, the complicated, and the unresolved. The band's parents appear in the album art, their own love stories folded into the record's visual identity, some of those stories still standing, others not. As Manjarrez puts it: "Every single song title directs you down a different road of love — whether you win or lose." Quiñones wanted listeners to sit with that ambiguity. "Love is never-ending," he says. "It stretches beyond lifetimes. I want people to still be confused — I want it to be left like an open book."

Yet one thing remains constant throughout: Thee Sinseers' commitment to where they come from. That East LA identity doesn't announce itself — it simply exists, woven into the fabric of the music without being worn as a badge. There's no performance of heartbreak here, just the real thing. Like an unsent love letter finally delivered, 'Love Stories' carries the weight of everything that was felt but never quite said. The universality of that feeling is perhaps best captured in Quiñones's own words: "It's never too late to change. It's never too late to tell a person you love that you love them."

Aaron Frazer

It's A Shame / The Fool

Colemine is proud to present the newest 45 from Aaron Frazer's 'Into The Blue' LP. This one is a special one. Two cuts featuring the rhythm section of the legendary Cold Diamond & Mink, the backbone of the Finnish soul label Timmion. The A-side is a new cut, "It's A Shame". And it might be a shame this one didn't make the LP, cause it's a banger. Expertly chopped and arranged by Aaron and producer Alex Goose, the cut features tight drums, Aaron's trademark silky falsetto, and beautiful string arrangements. You'll be humming the hook for days to come.

The B-side is the album closer on 'Into The Blue' and for good reason. Really feels like a sweet and soulful send off at the end of a movie. Lamenting the ups and downs of love, feeling foolish in the face of failure, but continuing to try nonetheless. Feels like a lost sample brought into the here and now expertly by Aaron and Goose.

Oliver James

1-2-3

Tennessee's Oliver James, a time-capsule of classic R&B sound, returns to the Colemine label with two new tunes pressed onto one must-have 45. The A-side features his first new track since 2022. '1-2-3' is an upbeat soul stomper à la Memphis and Stax. Nick DeVan and Vincent John (Eraserhood Sound) co-wrote the track; they finalized the instrumentals but were stumped on the lyrics. That's when James was called in, and he used his time working at a church to shape the lyrics that eventually became this number. The B-side was a collaborative effort with Nashville's gritty-funk ensemble The Gripsweats. It's an earnest song with lyrics inspired by James & DeVan's commiseration. "I'm no stranger to love that I used to know'," laments James; his favorite line of the song. Cushioned by lush string and horn arrangements, 'Nothing Is Forever' is a melancholy and heartfelt foil to the A.

Mitchum Yacoub

A Way In

Although it can’t be stated as any genre outright, 'A Way In' lends itself to the worlds of Afrobeat, Cumbia, Salsa, Jazz, Reggaeton and Soul; a stirring of potent rhythms and enigmatic melodies that make Mitchum Yacoub’s sophomore album stand tall in the world of groove music. Across the syncopated dance tracks, ethereal soundscapes, and steady backbeats, are tales of anguish, love, uprising, and healing. Ten tracks that expose and celebrate the human spirit.
Yacoub engineered, produced, and mixed the entirety of the album, ensuring the meticulously layered sound appreciated by fans of his debut 'Living High in the Brass Empire'. We are reunited with Travis Klein, Bradley Nash, and Wesley Etienne, his inimitable horn section not to be missed on record or on stage. Featuring the rising voices of Divina Jasso and Lourdes Iri on half of the tracks, 'A Way In' has no shortage of stand-out singles that will carry you from morning into night.

Parlor Greens

Emeralds

'Emeralds', the sophomore long player from Parlor Greens, finds the trio serving up a beautifully curated sampler of what funky organ music can be. Three true masters of their respective crafts: Tim Carman (formerly of GA-20) on drums, Jimmy James (True Loves, formerly of Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio) on guitar, and Adam Scone (Scone Cash Players, The Sugarman 3) on organ. Seasoned and soulful pros coming together to make infectiously funky instrumental jams. Parlor Greens are truly in top form: tour tight and more confident than ever in who they are and where they’re going.

The first time these three met in Loveland at Colemine’s Portage Lounge studio was marked by a certain freshness. It was new, it was the first time they had all played together. It was exciting, it was unknown territory. The session for 'Emeralds' weighed much heavier on all three members. All three dealing with personal tragedies in their individual lives, the session truly served as a genuine moment of joy for the group. Just three talented musicians, writing and playing music now as friends in a familiar environment. No moment is the weight of the session more obvious than with the album’s closer, 'Queen Of My Heart', a tune Jimmy wrote for his mother shortly after she passed away. So with a heavy and soulful heart, Colemine Records is beyond proud to present the sophomore effort from three maestros. Parlor Greens presents… 'Emeralds'.

STAFF COMMENTS

Laura says: If you’re into soulful, funky organ jams, Parlor Greens sit right in that sweet spot where retro soul, jazz, and groove-heavy funk collide.

At the core of their sound is the classic organ trio format—Hammond organ, guitar, and drums—which goes all the way back to players like Jimmy Smith and Jimmy McGriff. But Parlor Greens give it a modern, slightly gritty twist.

Loving this!

Kelly Finnigan

I Can't Wait (For Christmas Time) / Snowy Night In Ohio

For the first time since his viral holiday album ‘A Joyful Sound’ released in 2020, Kelly Finnigan (Monophonics) is back with two new original Christmas songs. ??‘I Can’t Wait (For Christmas Time)’ is a heavy yet laid back cut with a straight ahead pop arrangement. It’s that rust belt soul sound with the kind of harmonies that fuel Southern California cruisers; deep and emotive with just the right amount of instrumentation to push Finnigan’s tender voice forward. The tune also features label mate Kendra Morris and her band on backing vocals. Akin to previous KF releases or gems by The Escorts or The Four Mints, this record is meant for you and yours, wrapped in pretty paper under the tree until Christmas morning.

Then save some room for cookies and the b-side…

'Snowy Night In Ohio' feels like a slow moving midnight train making its way from Cincinnati to Memphis. Inspired by Finnigan’s first winter in Ohio, his love for gospel records, and horn arrangements by Isaac Hayes. This is a true stand out instrumental that oozes ice cold soul. It has a brief vocal message from Finnigan that feels testimonial and heartfelt. Featuring Colemine’s own Terry Cole and Jimmy James, plus Billy Aukstik and Morgan Price. Kelly says to be sure to treat yourself after a taxing year with a record the whole family can enjoy this holiday season. Merry Christmas!

Auld Lang Syne / Everyday Will Be Like A Holiday

Looking for a fresh 45 to spin this holiday season? Look no further than your friendly neighborhood organ trio Parlor Greens! Their take on The Black On White Affair's classic version of Auld Lang Syne on the a-side, which absolutely crushes. Scone tears the organ to shreds leaving nothing left but a few stockings and some wrapping paper. Flip to over to close the night with a beautiful and mellow instrumental version of William Bell's "Every Day Will Be Like A Holiday." Two sides to this very merry coin.

The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble

Gemini

In Latin, the word 'Gemini' denotes “two together” or “twins.” In astrological terms, Geminis are noted for, amongst other things, being curious and versatile. For San Diego’s 9-piece (mostly) instrumental combo The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble, Jazz and Funk have always been the two genres that they’ve consistently and effectively melded together, forming the bedrock of their sound. Exercising their stylistic curiosity and versatility, they’ve expanded upon this foundation on their new 11-song long player for Colemine Records.

Recorded between late 2021 and early 2024 at The Kitchen II in their home base of Lemon Grove, California, SFSE steer their “introspective party music” into fresh sonic realms. While their breakbeat-heavy brand of funk-soul-jazz is still the cornerstone of their sound, as displayed in tunes such as 'Makin’ Moves', 'The Grifter', and 'Don’t Trip', they’ve begun to take more and more cues from library music labels such as KPM Music, spiritually-leaning jazz labels such as Tribe & Black Jazz Records, and exotica-adjacent jazz artists such as Cal Tjader and Dorothy Ashby.

Now leaning more into the “introspective” part of their sound, particularly on 'Mother Earth', 'Freddie', and the title track, they evoke the spirits of Freddie Hubbard, Phil Ranelin, Wendell Harrison, Bubbha Thomas, Chester Thompson, and even Cannonball Adderley at his headiest & most cosmic (listen to Adderley’s Soul Zodiac & Soul of The Bible albums for reference). “Corporatocracy” takes it a step further with an extended tabla solo, which floats in and rides the percussive wave before kicking into its funk-driven, modal vibe. With their current lineup of: Tim Felten on keys, Jake Najor on drums, Omar Lopez on bass, Kiko Cornejo Jr. on conga/percussion, Aquiles “Lito” Magana on guitar, Wili Fleming on trombone, Sheryll Felten on percussion, Jesse Audelo & Travis Klein on saxophone & flute, SFSE maintains their commitment to keeping it funky but dares to go where they haven’t gone before and, as a result, breaks intriguing new ground in their overall sound.

Aaron Frazer

Fly Away / Play On

Stock is very limited so orders may well be cut. For Fans Of... Pale Jay, Durand Jones & The Indications, Jalen Ngonda, NEIL FRANCIS, Jitwam, Kelly Finnigan, DARGZ.

The A side, “Fly Away” is a tune largely built on a sample of the Hi-Five track of the same name, and features thudding drums and dense guitar riffs. Co written by Lydia Kitto of Jungle, this tune is a perfect mix of 70’s soul and 90's R&B. A true summertime jam!

On the flip, “Play On” sits a little bit more in the midtempo cut with super tight drums, bass, and synths anchoring the track. The lyrics are a coaching up session and serve as positive encouragement, and Frazer’s vocal delivery pushes that home. Mega catchy hook with just the right amount of swagger....play on player.
