The Divine Comedy

A Short Album About Love

In 1990 Neil Hannon started recording and releasing under the name The Divine Comedy. Thirty years and twelve great albums later, Hannon is rightly adjudged one of the finest singer songwriters of his generation. To celebrate, Divine Comedy Records are remastering and reissuing nine of the band's classic albums. The reissues will be released by Neil Hannon’s own label Divine Comedy Records.

A Short Album About Love was conceived as a companion piece to the band's previous album Casanova. It was recorded live at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire in London in 1996 with a 30-piece orchestra, and was released in time for Valentine’s Day 1997, charting at 13 in the UK. NME described the show where the album was recorded as "an evening when dreams finally come true; a night of costume changes, classical kisses and - in time honoured tradition of drinking and dressing up - hugely sophisticated fun… One suspects it wouldn't be too hazardous to suggest that Neil Hannon is having by far the finest night of his entire sodding life." Time Out, reviewing the album, said: "Seven of the most heart-stoppingly gorgeous, romantic smoochers you have ever heard, all drenched in strings and emotion." The single Everybody Knows (Except You) reached 14 in the UK chart.

    The Beat Escape

Life Is Short The Answer's Long

Long before they were a band, Montreal duo The Beat Escape took a small first step towards a longer journey at a university video class. “We made a short oddball work; a video piece that followed two characters through a psychedelic waking dream,” say Beat Escapists Addy Weitzman and Patrick A Boivin of their founding collaboration. Many other projects and outside collaborations later, the duo have crafted a debut album their younger selves would be proud of: Released through Bella Union, the sublimely immersive ‘Life Is Short The Answer’s Long’ plays like a waking dream of near-psychedelic electronic pop, moving to its own beat in the push-pull of forward motion and submerged reflection.

That sense of propulsion ushers opener ‘Sign Of Age’ into rising view, its sparse drums, hypnotic sequence and melancholic chords resembling house music as reimagined by Angelo Badalamenti. The enveloping mood holds as ‘Moon In Aquarius’ unfurls like a nighttime road ahead, ghosted by narcotic harmonies. ‘Limestone Alps’ lingers meditatively, hymnal vocals reverberating. ‘Where Water Ends’ and ‘More Dreams’, meanwhile, navigate the porous boundary lines between Krautrock, Factory Records and obscure minimal wave records of the 80s.

      STAFF COMMENTS

Barry says: Superb throbbing pseudo-synthery from The Beat Escape, Bella Union's answer to Pye corner Audio mix swooning pads and soaring vocal abstractions around a dynamic core of weighted percussion, flickering arpeggios and spine-tingling euphoric leads.

The album captures Andy and Richard at what they do best – improvising live in the studio with no script and no plan.

It is presented as four distinct periods of time of about 20 minutes in length – which are called Continuums. A journey through constantly evolving textures and instant song creation.

The trumpet creates live loops that capture breathy noises, snatches of melody and warped riffs through harmonisers and effects.

The Drums explore rhythms and textures, responding to, and driving the loops forward as they are filtered and mutated. Experience a unique ongoing musical conversation – A short ride on the arrow of time.

      Boz Hayward And The Bozchestra

Shortscores (Short Film Scores From Video Jam)

Crossing Calexico with Mogwai will take you some way here… but only some way… This is very welcome unchartered territory. A highly original 10-track acoustic film score album rich in melody, harmonies, atmosphere and dynamics with a good mix of tempos that will take the listener to many places inside 40 minutes.

Boz Hayward’s fourth album SHORTSCORES is the first body of work created solely for Video Jam – the experimental short film/live score event from Manchester. Boz has been associated with Video Jam since its inception in January 2012. His cinematic, narrative writing style, coupled with his quaint and idiosyncratic 'Bozchestra' (traditionally consisting of Boz himself on acoustic guitar, a mariachi bass/guitarron, violin, trumpet and percussion) lends itself perfectly to the art of the film score. A rich, rewarding listen.

      The Short-Cuts

      Tie Their Own Shoelaces

Thirteen tracks recorded between 1998 and 2003 from Manchester based The Short-Cuts. Influenced by the Descendents and other SST bands this quartet know how to rock in that power-pop-punk stylee as well as tie their own shoelaces. Local boys done good!

        This Girl

Short Strut To The Brassy Front

Rotherham's finest This Girl have quickly become adored by absolutely everybody that's ever heard or seen them making this debut album stands head and shoulders above many other UK emocore outfits. Undoubtedly this exciting album is a tough act to follow for any bands releasing debuts in 2002.
