Y In Dub

The Pop Group’s seminal 1979 album Y has been given a new dub mix by British reggae legend Dennis “Blackbeard” Bovell, who has produced for a wide variety of artists including Fela Kuti, Bananarama and Linton Kwesi Johnson. This new version of the album features reimagined arrangements of the original album’s tracks with mind-bending space echoes and a plethora of other studio effects. Y is ranked by The Wire as one of the 100 Most Important Records Ever Made and by Pitchfork as one of the Best Albums of the ‘70s.

      Y Live

The Y Live album is an essential addendum to the original release, one that captures all the fierce urgency of The Pop Group’s live performances at the time. Comprised of Y era recordings captured at a variety of locations including New York, Manchester & Brussels – the latter on a bill with William Burroughs and Joy Division – Y Live exemplifies what had proved so thrilling about The Pop Group. A snapshot of a time when the group were sharing stages with future acolytes including Cabaret Voltaire, Linton Kwesi Johnson & Public Image Ltd, Mark Stewart describes the recordings as attempts to ‘paint the impossible’.

Laura says: "She Is Beyond Good And Evil" was my first introduction to the Pop Group in the late 80s at indie night The Wilde Club. On the strength of that track I bought this LP and played it to death and it remains one of my favourite albums. Now remastered it also includes a 12” of the track that made me fall for them them in the first place. Totally uncompromising post-punk genius!

          The Boy Whose Head Exploded

Post punk provocateurs The Pop Group unveil their latest archival release, The Boys Whose Head Exploded.

Compiled from unearthed basement tapes recorded during their incendiary performances of late 1979 and 1980, the compilation also includes a bonus DVD featuring film footage shot by legendary director Don Letts.
The bulk of the salvaged live recordings comprise brawling versions of songs taken from the band’s recently reissued second studio album For How Much Longer Do We Tolerate Mass Murder? The collection also features the previously unreleased 73 Shadow Street, and a surprise mutation of the Glaxo Babies’ Shake The Foundation.

The accompanying film footage is a short feature that’s been hiding in Don Letts’ punk rock archives for the past 35 years. Filmed by Letts at Alexandra Palace on June 15th1980 at an all day festival that featured the likes of John Cooper Clarke, The Raincoats and The Slits, the rare footage encapsulates the band’s molotov cocktail of punk, funk, free jazz and radical politics at its most artistically concussive.

            The Pop Group

            We Are Time

'We Are Time' was named after one of the Pop Group's most infamous onslaughts and originally released on vinyl in 1980, has been remastered from original tape s and available on CD for the first time and limited vinyl.

Of the early studio and live recordings that comprise We Are Time, frontman Mark Stewart says "We Are Time is really 'the' teenage Pop Group album. It's full of defiance and the material demonstrates the band's staunch independence and our really early DIY ethic before the studio became another instrument."

Guitarist Gareth Sager explains that the band was "trying in an inexplicably naive manner to combine Patti Smith's Rimbaud ramblings, James Brown, the Stooges, Roxy Music, T.Rex and classical aleatoric music. You can hear the results of this on tracks 'Genius Or Lunatic', 'Colour Blind', 'Trap', 'Sense Of Purpose', 'Kiss The Book' and 'We Are Time." He goes on to say "soon after this the band were bringing in other influences, Ornette Coleman, King Tubby, Funkadelic, Debussy, Jacques Brel, Fela Kuti, Steve Reich and then you get 'Thief Of Fire'."

The Pop Group was born in Bristol in 1977 out of a disenchantment with punk failing to bust out of its rock origins. With mystical fire, enraged by global injustices, the group delivered scathing political and society - indicting messages aboard a post-apocalypse rollercoaster, ferociously straddling their beloved free jazz, conscious funk, heavyweight dub and audacious experimentalism.

"It's one of those moments when the cogs of your mind shift and your life is going to irreversibly change forever" – Nick Cave on hearing The Pop Group for the first time.
