The Murlocs

Calm Ya Farm

The Murlocs had visions of creating a quintessential country-rock record when they begin recording their 7th LP - a collection of sublimely mellowed-out songs inspired by iconic albums like "Sweetheart of the Rodeo" and "Exile on Main St" - but the record soon took on its own unruly character. Spiked with The Murlocs’ signature breed of sharply crafted garage-punk "Calm Ya Farm" twists country-rock convention into a free-flowing album fully in touch with the frenetic energy of modern life.

Matt Edible & The Obtuse Angels

    Stairgazing

Holy Orders/Edible 5ft Smiths frontman goes not-quite-solo with a little help from some celestial friends. ‘Stairgazing’ is the debut solo album from former Edible 5ft Smiths leader Matt Edible. Hull cult favourites Edible 5ft Smiths made one and a half of the greatest undiscovered albums of the noughties before burning up in a small blaze of glory, leaving broken hearts scattered in their wake. Since then Matt has fronted awesomely heavy & twisted rock combo The Holy Orders, all the while building up a collection of distinctly different songs of his own, more akin to a continuation of the Edibles catalogue.

Those songs seemed set to languish in the vault until, prompted by the mundanity of life and an encounter with mortality, Matt decided they needed to be fully realised and so sought out an old friend, producer and Edibles super-fan Joe Bennett (Dreaming Spires, Co-pilgrim, Goldrush, Saint Etienne). Before long a plan was hatched to cut the record at Farm Music Studios in Oxfordshire, with drummer Mike Monaghan (Willie J Healey, Ralfe Band, Gaz Coombes) and Co-pilgrim main man Mike Gale on board.

The record itself is a swooning psychedelic pop beauty: Matt’s distinctive vocal acrobatics are introduced on soaring opener “Jumping Houses” and alternative christmas hit “Advent Beard”. “Nightclubbing” is the greatest tongue-in-cheek stadium anthem Noel Gallagher never wrote, and album climax “The Healing” ebbs and flows from Bowie-esque prog piano balladry into full-on cinematic post-rock explosion.

      Cosmic Psychos

Down On The Farm / Cosmic Psychos

The band debuted on wax almost 30 years ago and since then have become an Aussie punk/pub rock institution, touring the globe and influencing a generation of Seattle musicians (Mudhoney, the Melvins and Pearl Jam among them) in the process. On top of that there's the recently released full-length documentary on the band, Blokes You Can Trust, which is doing the rounds in cinemas around Australia and the US, a US tour in September and now these! 2013 is the Year Of The Cosmic Psycho.

Let's start with 1985's Down On The Farm mini-album. Featuring original guitarist Peter 'Dirty' Jones on wah-wah guitar, it's an absolute classic of heavy-duty punk/grunge.

The self-titled LP from 1987 is another classic with the original line-up.

The CD also contains the two bonus tracks 19 songs in total.

All of these classic '80s recordings by the Psychos have been out of print since the 20th century. With the band's fortunes and notoriety in the upswing this year, expect some big interest in these long-unavailable quality reissues. Blokes you can trust, indeed.
